Tensile Strength Property with PdCo-Cu Multi-Layer Lamination and Heat Treatment of MEMS Probe for Probe Card

Cantilever wire probe card has limited to transport high-speed signal because of long wire but it is suitable for inspecting high-current and high voltage semiconductor such as wide band gap (WBG) power semiconductors.Superior mechanical property of a probe card wire is in demand because it is respectively used wafer inspection with in and out pad on the top surface of the power semiconductor wafer. Therefore, in this study, tensile specimens of micro electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) probe alternatively layered and electroplated with palladium (Pd)-cobalt (Co) alloy layers and copper (Cu) layers. MEMS probe was also measured tensile strength and elongation with multi-lamination and heat treatment conditions. Additionally, fractography of fracture surface after tensile test were analyzed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). As the number of PdCo-Cu multi-layer increased, 11, 15 and 21 layered specimens showed higher tensile strength and longer elongation than 5 layered specimens because of the increase of laminated interface of PdCo and Cu. 7 layered specimen after isothermal aging had higher tensile strength and longer elongation than before isothermal aging. In 5, 11, 15 and 21 layered specimens, the fracture surfaces of tensile test specimens without aging treatment showed a ductile-brittle mixed fracture mode. Fracture surfaces of 7-layered specimen before and after isothermal aging showed a ductile-brittle mixed fracture mode.

Performance study of explosively formed projectile using CoCrFeNi high-entropy alloy as a liner

Based on mechanical tensile experiments on the CoCrFeNi high-entropy alloy (HEA), this study explores the forming patterns of the eccentrically shaped sub-hemispherical lined explosively formed projectile (EFP) made of the HEA material. The CoCrFeNi HEA material is initially prepared, and mechanical tensile tests are conducted at various temperatures and strain rates. The Johnson–Cook (J–C) constitutive equation for this material is derived by fitting the experimental data. Scanning electron microscopy and the energy dispersive spectrometer characterize the fracture surface of the tensile specimens, providing insights into the mechanical ductility and fracture mechanism of CoCrFeNi HEA. The EFP forming process under various charge configurations is simulated using AUTODYN software, leading to the identification of the optimal charge configuration. In addition, the damage performance is evaluated. This study provides a theoretical basis for applying HEA materials in the field of shaped charges and offers new ideas and methods for designing more efficient shaped charge warheads.

An experimental study of fracture mechanism and morphology of granite specimens under various dynamic loading rates

Numerous studies have shown that dynamic fracture toughness (DFT) of rock is dependent on loading rate. This paper quantitatively studied the effect of loading rate on DFT from perspective of mesoscopic fracture morphology. First, notched semi-circle bend (NSCB) and short-core-in-compression (SCC) samples of granite were prepared for dynamic mode I and mode II fracture tests. Then, the DFT values of NSCB and SCC specimens at various loading rates were calculated and analyzed. After that, mesoscopic morphologies of failure surfaces of NSCB and SCC specimens under various loading rates were obtained by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The fracture morphology features of specimens were quantitatively characterized by a method combining deep learning and SEM images. The analytical results suggested that as loading rates rose, the increase in the percentage of mesoscopic fracture morphology caused by shear stress (MFM-S) on the fractured surface was the primary reason for the increase of DFT. When dynamic loading varied from 40 to 120 GPa m1/2 s−1, there was a linear relationship between the DFT and the proportion of MFM-S. Additionally, with an increasing loading rate, the proportion of MFM-S on the fracture surface of NSCB specimens varied slightly more, which can explain why the dependence of DFT on loading rate in NSCB specimens was somewhat more obvious than in SCC specimens.

An innovative functional compatibility strategy for poly (lactic acid) and polypropylene carbonate blends to achieve superior toughness, degradability, and optical properties

This study, for the first time, unveils the potential of dibutyl itaconate (DBI) in enhancing the compatibility between PLA (poly (lactic acid)) and PPC (polypropylene carbonate), systematically investigating the effects of DBI amount on the thermal, optical, rheological, mechanical, and degradation properties and microstructure of the PLA/PPC/DBI blends. The results showed that DBI could chemically react with PLA and PPC, forming a PLA-co-DBI-co-PPC copolymer structure, thereby improving the compatibility between PLA and PPC. When the DBI amount reached 8 wt%, only one Tg was observed in the blend system, and no distinct phase interface was visible in the fracture surface of the blend specimens. This indicated that at this DBI amount, the PLA and PPC had transitioned from a partially compatible system to a fully compatible system. With the increase in DBI amount in the system, the elongation at break and notched impact strength of the blends initially increased and then decreased, while the storage modulus, loss modulus, and complex viscosity showed a gradual downward trend. When the DBI amount increased to 10 wt%, the flexibility of the blends reached its peak, with the values rising to 494.7 % and 8494.1 J/m2, respectively, representing 13.7 times and 2.5 times those of the neat PLA/PPC blends. At this point, the impact specimens exhibited significant plastic flow in the direction of force, showing distinct ductile fracture characteristics. Meanwhile, the degradation performance of the PLA/PPC blends increased with the addition of DBI. The introduction of DBI effectively facilitated the penetration of water molecules into the PLA/PPC molecular chains, enhancing the hydrolysis of ester bonds, leading to a maximum mass loss rate of 84.1 %, which was significantly higher than the 20.3 % of the neat PLA/PPC blends. In addition, the addition of DBI significantly reduced the haze of the blends while maintaining high light transmittance, demonstrating excellent optical properties (light transmittance remained above 92.4 %, and haze decreased from 37.1 % to 11.1 %). In conclusion, this study provides a new approach for the development of high-performance PLA-based biodegradable composites. The resulting blends exhibit excellent toughness, degradation performance, and optical properties, significantly enhancing their application potential in fields such as disposable products, packaging, agriculture, and 3D printing materials.

Effects of lactic acid etching on immediate and aged bond strength of resin-dentin bonding interface.

To investigate the effects of lactic acid etching on the immediate and aged bond strength of the resin-dentin bonding interface, the resin-dentin bonding interface was evaluated 24 hours and 6 months later. A total of 42 isolated third molars were randomly divided into 6 experimental groups according to different lactate concentration (35%, 40%, 45%) and acid etching time (30 s, 45 s), with 37% phosphoric acid etching 15 s as a control. In each group, dentin samples were etched under different acidic conditions and bonded with Adper Single Bond 2 (3M ESPE) as directed. The immediate group was immediately stored in deionized water at 37 °C for 24 h, and the aging group was stored in artificial saliva at 37 °C for 6 months. Immediate and aged bond strengths were measured by a micro-tensile tester, and the specimen fracture surface was observed under a microscope. 14 isolated third molars were randomly divided into 7 groups, and each group was etched with acid. Collagen fibers morphology in dentin was examined after gradient dehydration with ethanol by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Statistically, there was no difference between the resin-dentin immediate bonding strength of 35% lactic acid for 30 s and 37% phosphoric acid for 15 s, but the aged bond strength was greater than that of the phosphoric acid group. According to scanning electron microscope observations, the collagen fiber morphology in 35% and 40% lactate etching dentin 30 s groups was relatively intact compared with other groups. In conclusion, 35% lactic acid etching of dentin 30 s ensures both immediate and aged resin-dentin bond strength.

Effects of irradiation and stress on crack initiation behavior of 316SS flux thimble tubes in PWR environment

Irradiation assisted stress corrosion cracking (IASCC) behavior and irradiated microstructural features of cold-worked 316 stainless steel flux thimble tube specimens were investigated in 340 °C simulated PWR primary water. It covers three dose levels (∼40, ∼60 and ∼100 dpa) and five stress levels (35%, 40%, 50%, 60% and 70% of irradiated yield strength at high temperature. Crack initiation in highly irradiated materials occurred rapidly in 33 failed specimens at high-stress level. A clear dose dependence for IASCC initiation was observed. The susceptibility to IASCC initiation reached saturation around 40–60 dpa. Fracture surface of different dose level O-ring specimens showed that intergranular cracking was the main fracture mode. Discrete slip steps were observed on intergranular fractured regions of each dose level specimens, which is associated as evidence of dislocation channeling. A threshold stress level which was close to 30% yield strength was determined on various testing results from literature and this study. Data scatter was observed for those results from different studies but all agreed on that the failure rate increases with stress level and neutron dose.

Comparison of fatigue characteristics and failure analysis of Ni-based superalloy subjected to thermomechanical fatigue under different phase conditions

In this research, the thermomechanical fatigue (TMF) characteristics of a second-generation Ni-based single-crystal superalloy were investigated. The combined effects of temperature cycling and mechanical stress were examined using a strain-controlled approach under different TMF testing conditions. The results indicated that cyclic softening occurred during the early stages during in-phase (IP) loading. In contrast, out-of-phase (OP) tests exhibited cyclic hardening, as evidenced by an increase in the stress range, which intensified at higher mechanical strain amplitudes. This resulted in a shorter fatigue life compared to the IP TMF case. The crack distribution patterns and damage mechanisms on the cross-sectional and fracture surfaces of the failed specimens were analyzed. In the OP TMF tests, oxidation-assisted cracking was identified as the primary damage mechanism. The dominance of oxide layers was a key distinguishing feature. Additionally, twinning-related deformation and topologically close-packed (TCP) phase particles were observed in specimens subjected to a higher mechanical strain of 0.6%, where they ran parallel to the main crack, contributing to a reduction in lifetime. Conversely, the IP TMF cases were mainly dominated by creep damage mechanisms, with some signs of oxidation penetration observed during testing. The application of the Ostergren model to the fatigue life prediction of a Ni-based single-crystal superalloy under both conditions was evaluated. As this model was insufficient, a modified Ostergren model was proposed by incorporating the maximum and amplitude stresses in the power law forms.

An Investigation on the Potential of Utilizing Aluminum Alloys in the Production and Storage of Hydrogen Gas.

The interest in hydrogen is rapidly expanding because of rising greenhouse gas emissions and the depletion of fossil resources. The current work focuses on employing affordable Al alloys for hydrogen production and storage to identify the most efficient alloy that performs best in each situation. In the first part of this work, hydrogen was generated from water electrolysis. The Al alloys that are being examined as electrodes in a water electrolyzer are 1050-T0, 5052-T0, 6061-T0, 6061-T6, 7075-T0, 7075-T6, and 7075-T7. The flow rate of hydrogen produced, energy consumption, and electrolyzer efficiency were measured at a constant voltage of 9 volts to identify the Al alloy that produces a greater hydrogen flow rate at higher process efficiency. The influence of the electrode surface area and water electrolysis temperature were also studied. The second part of this study examines these Al alloys' resistance to hydrogen embrittlement for applications involving compressed hydrogen gas storage, whether they are utilized as the primary vessel in Type 1 pressure vessels or as liners in Type 2 or Type 3 pressure vessels. Al alloys underwent electrochemical charging by hydrogen and Charpy impact testing, after which a scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to investigate the fracture surfaces of both uncharged and H-charged specimens. The structural constituents of the studied alloys were examined using X-ray diffraction analysis and were correlated to the alloys' performance. Sensitivity analysis revealed that the water electrolysis temperature, electrode surface area, and electrode material type ranked from the highest to lowest in terms of their influence on improving the efficiency of the hydrogen production process. The 6061-T0 Al alloy demonstrated the best performance in both hydrogen production and storage applications at a reasonable material cost.

Investigation of thermodynamically induced nanoparticle localization in Poly(vinylidene fluoride)/Poly(lactic acid) blends with surface-grafted carbon nanotubes

Physically anchoring multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) onto the polymer blend interface has been extensively investigated, however, the tunable localization of polymer grafted MWCNT in immiscible polymer blends is seldom reported. Herein, poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) grafted MWCNT (PMMA-g-MWCNT) were nondestructively prepared via the surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization. The compatibilization effects of PMMA-g-MWCNT on morphology and mechanical properties of blend composites are investigated. The results demonstrate that the fillers are distributed at the blend interface due to the high affinity between PMMA and PVDF. The interaction between PMMA and PLA changes the crystallinity of blends. Moreover, the surface modification of MWCNT enhances the interaction of filler and matrix, and the elongation at break is as high as 52 % for composites with 10 % PMMA-g-MWCNT. The fracture surface of specimen after tensile tests exhibits an obvious ductile transition with filler contents. This work systematically discussed the relationship between the PMMA-g-MWCNT distribution and the mechanical strength of composites, which provided a solid experimental foundation on the toughening mechanism of PMMA-g-MWCNT used as a compatibilizer for PVDF/PLA blends.

Development and characterization of hybrid polymer composite materials with reinforcement of glass/carbon fibers for enhanced mechanical properties: an experimental and numerical approach

Composite materials, particularly fiber-reinforced plastics (FRP), are used in aerospace and automotive industries due to their desirable properties and surpassing traditional metals in various applications. Researchers are countering the drawbacks of using a single fiber type in FRP by creating hybrid composites that combine different fibers in a single matrix. These hybrids harness the cost-effectiveness and corrosion resistance of glass fibers alongside the strength and stiffness of carbon fibers, resulting in a balanced combination of properties for various applications. Tensile tests were performed according to the ASTM D3039 standard, with a 2 mm/min strain rate. The results showed that increasing the carbon fiber percentage (6.56%, 13.79%, and 21.07%) led to significant improvements in the tensile strength of the hybrid composites (34.18%, 55.44%, and 85.40% higher than glass fiber composites). However, changing the stacking sequence did not significantly affect tensile strength, indicating its insignificance in this regard. Numerical simulations were conducted to validate the experimental results, and the errors between experimental and numerical data were below 10% for various stacking sequences. These discrepancies were attributed to factors such as fiber waviness, which resulted in heterogeneous property distribution within the composites, and the manufacturing process used for creating the hybrid composites. Scanning electron microscope analysis was also performed to study the failure modes on the fracture surface of the tensile-tested specimens.

One-step additive manufacturing of melt-growth porous ceramics by laser directed energy deposition

Porous ceramics, as a new type of lightweight ceramic materials, have attracted much attention in recent decades due to their low thermal conductivity and high surface area, which are crucial for applications in aerospace and biomedicine. In this work, we report a novel approach for the one-step additive manufacturing of melt-growth Al2O3-ZrO2-SiCp porous ceramics using laser directed energy deposition (LDED). The fracture surfaces of as-fabricated specimens show obvious porous structures when SiCp content exceeds 50 wt%. The porosity and compressive strength of Al2O3-ZrO2-70 wt% SiCp (AZS70) specimens can reach 48 ± 4 % and 95 ± 5 MPa, respectively. In addition, the compressive strength of AZS70 is found to increase by a factor of 2–3 compared to the case of oxide porous ceramics with similar porosity prepared by other additive manufacturing technologies. Our approach may provide a valid option for achieving porous ceramics with excellent mechanical properties.

Tension anisotropy of rolled AA7075-T6 auminium alloy: Experiments, BP-Neural network modeling and orientation dependent failure mechanisms

This paper presents the investigations on anisotropic tension mechanical responses of AA7075-T6 based on experiments, classical strength theory, BP-neural network modeling and fracture morphology characterization. Results show that the tension strength anisotropy weakens with deformation degree. Compared to the traditional method, the machine learning model exhibits more flexible in solving the anisotropic plastic responses of AA7075-T6 auminium alloy sheet and provides more accurate predictions. Through analyzing the fracture surface of tension specimen at various orientations, the failure mechanism is sensitive to orientation. Specifically, the irregular distribution of dimples zones and cleavage steps can be observed at lower material orientation. As the orientation increases, the alternative occurrence of ductile and brittle features dominates the failure mechanism. The medium-size dimple caused by coalescence of small-size dimples represents a transition between ductile features zone and brittle characteristics region.

Effects of multiple overloads and high-low sequence loading on the fatigue crack propagation of AZ31B magnesium alloy

An experimental study was conducted to examine the initiation of cracks in the AZ31B magnesium (Mg) alloy for tensile overload effects, exploring the influence of overload cycle number, magnitude, and multiplicity of the applied overloads (OL). The number of cycles to failure increased from 8 % to 15 % for overload ratio (OLR) of 1.5 and 2.0 respectively applied as first cycle when compared with constant amplitude loading (CAL). However, the number of cycles to failure increased from 25 % to 43 % for OLR of 1.5 and 2.0 respectively when overload was applied at 5000th cycle. The onset of cracks was delayed when two overloads were applied as the first and 5000th loading cycles. The longitudinal-transverse (L-T) specimens were tested using a two-step high-low sequence loading procedure by varying maximum and minimum load. The fractography results also depict variations in the initial crack formations under different overload conditions. The effects of different overloads on the fracture surfaces of Compact Tension specimens were examined using the Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy, indicating substantial reduction in both the number and size of microcracks. 3D profilometer tests were performed, indicating a surface roughness of 0.20 μm to 0.30 μm.

A comparison between tensile and hole expansion properties in 800 MPa tensile strength grade hot-rolled steels

Sheared edge formability can play a critical role in cold forming of high-strength hot-rolled steels due to susceptibility to edge cracking. Standardized ISO 16630 hole expansion test is currently the most widely used method to estimate sheared edge formability of steel sheets, however, there has been increasing interest in the industry to reduce the amount of required testing. The aim of this paper was to compare hole expansion performance of hot-rolled strip steels to various uniaxial tensile test results. The five investigated steels were selected to have 3 mm thickness and similar (838±10 MPa) longitudinal tensile strength level while consisting of different microstructures. Tensile properties were measured in 0°, 45°, and 90° angle relative to the rolling direction to investigate anisotropy. Plastic strain ratios were determined by digital image correlation measurement. Local ductility was evaluated with thickness strain measurements (εp_amin) on fracture surfaces of the tensile specimens. To investigate stretch-flangeability, ISO 16630 conforming hole expansion tests were performed. Test holes were produced by punching and by wire electrical discharge machining (W-EDM) to evaluate edge damage tolerance of the materials. The hole expansion ratios (HER) were not observed to correlate with majority of the investigated tensile test results, such as uniform elongation and yield strength. However, a good correlation between HER and planar anisotropy was observed. Planar anisotropy is seen to affect strain localization tendency around the hole. The HER values of neither punched nor W-EDM specimens correlated clearly with εp_amin measurement results. The results show that at a similar strength level, anisotropy is highly influencing the hole expansion performance of hot-rolled steels, and that the HER is not reliably predicted by a single local formability parameter.

Fracture surface analysis of fracture mechanics specimens with splits: Determination of the physical crack extension

Determining ductile fracture toughness requires evaluating the physical crack extension (Δap) on the fracture surface of fracture mechanics specimens. This step is essential for both the basic and single specimen methodologies. While established procedures exist for determining Δap from various standards, measuring it on fracture surfaces with splits poses challenges due to the lack of guidelines in current standards for treating such delaminations. This investigation delves into measuring Δap on fracture surfaces with and without splits using digital image analysis. The fracture surface characteristics of specimens with splits were analyzed, revealing tortuous crack fronts whose complexity increased with the number of delaminations. Additionally, issues with applying the standard method in materials exhibiting high fracture toughness (ductile behavior) and splits were discussed, highlighting significant errors that can arise from the standard methodology in fracture surfaces with splits.Subsequently, four alternative methodologies were proposed and evaluated: the Adapted Nine-Point method (A9P), the Adapted Eighteen-Point method (A18P), the Adapted Area as Lucon’s proposed method (AL), and the Adapted Area Average method (AAA). These were validated in specimens without splits, establishing the AAA method as the reference one. The A9P exhibited poor performance, similar to the AL method. In contrast, the AAA and A18P demonstrated excellent results, recommending their application in fracture surfaces with splits. The advantages and disadvantages of each proposed method are discussed comprehensively. Furthermore, crack front straightness was assessed using ASTM and BS ISO criteria, revealing 88% and 50% rejection rates, respectively.

Frequency effect on low‐cycle fatigue behavior of pseudoelastic NiTi alloy

AbstractThis study presents experimental results on the effect of loading frequency during low‐cycle fatigue on the fracture mechanism and properties of pseudoelastic NiTi wire. The uniaxial tensile tests were performed in stress‐controlled mode over the 0.1–10 Hz frequency range. It was shown that the number of cycles before specimen failure decreased with increasing frequency from 0.1 Hz to 1 Hz but increased at frequencies above 1 Hz. It was fractographically shown that fatigue striations were observed on the fracture surfaces of specimens tested at all loading frequencies. A new type of fatigue striations was described on fracture specimens tested at frequencies up to 1 Hz. They are characterized by different spacing between successive striations with a change in the slope of the fracture at the transitions between them. This feature may be associated with forward and reverse phase transformations during half‐periods of loading and unloading of nitinol.

Notched Tensile Fracture of a Fe-15Mn-0.6C-2Al Twinning Induced Plasticity Steel at Room Temperature

The tensile fracture behavior of an Al-bearing TWIP steel was investigated by conducting a series of tensile tests on smooth and notched specimens with different notch geometries, focusing on the effects of evolution of the stress triaxiality and the effective strain during deformation. The flow curve and digital image correlation (DIC) analysis evidenced suppression of dynamic strain aging due to Al addition, and therefore, the effects of local inhomogeneous deformation associated with Portevin-Le Chatelier (PLC) band on fracture could be excluded. The smooth specimen fractured with negligible necking despite the absence of PLC bands. As a result, the effective strain was uniform through the gage section and the stress triaxiality (<i>η</i>) of ~0.33 was nearly unchanged over the entire cross-section up to the maximum load. This led to the fracture surface of the smooth specimen being entirely covered with fine equiaxed dimples. For notched specimens, the fracture strain was drastically reduced with decreasing notch radius, indicating the high notch susceptibility of the steel. The effective strain of the notched specimens was the highest at the edge of the notch root, regardless of the notch radius, so cracks first developed at the surface of the notch root. Although the <i>η</i> at the center of the notched specimens (0.40~0.48 depending on the notch radius) was higher than that of the smooth one, the center of the fracture surface of all notched specimens exhibited dimple features that were very similar to the smooth one, even in size. In contrast, in spite of the same <i>η</i> of ~0.33, fractography at the edge of the notched specimens revealed a fracture mode transition from dimple fracture to void sheet fracture to quasi-cleavage fracture as the notch radius decreased. The present results were rationalized in terms of the local evolution of stress triaxiality and effective strain during deformation, which were analyzed using the finite elemental method and DIC technique. It can be said that the fracture mode of TWIP steel, showing limited necking, was more influenced by the distribution and/or gradient of stress traiaxiality and effective strain rather than their local absolute values - that is, the severer their gradient is, the easier the quasi-cleavage fracture occurs.

Effect of copper addition on mechanical properties and microstructures of LM25 cast alloys

The use of aluminum alloys in automobiles is expanding, and the potential for additional increases is significant. Further growth will be determined by improvements in material qualities for existing applications or the discovery of new applications. Alloy A-356 (LM25) is commonly employed for high-quality alloy wheel rims in various motor vehicles, constituting 40% of global car usage. This study introduces 0.2% Cu into the Al–Si–Mg alloy system to enhance the mechanical properties. The alloy blend is cast into a metal mold, subjected to a 4-h cure at 540 °C, quenched with water, and precipitation hardened for 12 h at 1800 °C. Optical and scanning electron microscopes are utilized to analyze the alkali microstructure. The mechanical properties of alloyed and unalloyed castings, including hardness and tensile test results, are examined in untreated and heat-treated states. Fracture surfaces of tensile specimens are scrutinized. Intermetallic compounds formed during solidification are studied using scanning electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction analysis. The tensile strength under unalloyed (LM25) and alloyed (LM25 + 0.2 wt. % Cu) conditions before and after heat treatment [(72, 165.4 and 88.3, 237.1) and (78, 179.6 and 98, 252.9, respectively)] shows a significant increase.

Effect of aggregate damage on self-healing characteristics of asphalt concrete: An image processing-based method

In the fracture-based healing test, asphalt specimens generally break into two halves and the aggregates in the crack path also break. In this study, the effect of aggregate damage on the self-healing performance of asphalt concrete was studied. To achieve this, semi-circle asphalt specimens were produced. Then, they were broken using the Semi-circle bending test (SCB) at different temperatures (i.e., −20, −10, 0, 10, and 20 °C) to create various aggregate damage situations. Next, the fracture surfaces of specimens were photographed and the percentages of damage types (i.e., adhesive, cohesive, and broken aggregates) were obtained by using image processing techniques. After the specimens were healed at a constant 55 °C, the SCB test was applied again to measure the strength of the specimens and to calculate healing performance. Finally, fracture surfaces were photographed again. According to findings, as breaking temperatures increase, broken aggregates and adhesive damage decrease. Cohesive damage, on the other hand, rose with the high breaking temperature. Healing performance was better at low breaking temperatures. A positive correlation was found between aggregate damage and healing levels, but it was explained as a spurious relationship. The real correlation was negative which was obtained from a second dataset.

Nanohybridization Effects on Impact Behavior of Basalt/Glass Fiber Reinforced Epoxy Hybrid Nanocomposites

Basalt fiber-based composites have received greater attention from manufacturers and researchers recently for use in a variety of structural applications, owing to their high strength-to-weight ratio, high stiffness, and excellent mechanical properties. The main objective of the current research is to examine the impact behavior of hybrid basalt/glass fiber reinforced composites that have been altered by the addition of MWCNTs and SiO2 (Nano silica) to the epoxy matrix as per the ASTM standards. All of the composites were created using Manual lay-up method followed by Compression molding using novel symmetric stacking sequence configurations of B/GG/BB/GG/BB/GG/B fibers with nanoparticles at weight percentages of 0%, 1% (0.5% MWCNTs + 0.5% SiO2) 2% (1% MWCNTs + 1% SiO2) and 3% (1.5 % MWCNTs + 1.5% SiO2). The homogeneous dispersion of nanoparticles in the epoxy matrix was achieved by ultrasonicator and magnetic stirrers. The maximum value of Izod impact strength was recorded as 203 kJ/m2 for the composite filled with 2 wt. % of nano-fillers. In comparison to the composite containing no fillers, the composite adding 2 wt. % showed a 24% improvement from 167 to 203 kJ/m2 in Izod impact resistance. It was observed that increasing the weight percentage of fillers in composites causes insufficient interfacial interaction between the matrix and fibers, thereby decreasing their impact resistance. The load transmission between the matrix and fibers is increased by the presence of MWCNTs/SiO2 at the fiber/matrix interface, which also improves the fracture toughness. According to images obtained by Scanning Electron Microscopy of the fracture surfaces of impact-tested specimens, the major reasons for failure include fiber/matrix deboning, fiber breaking, fiber fracture and fiber pull-out.
