Re-examining the Past and Envisioning the Future of Italian Cinema and Media: Journal of Italian Cinema & Media Studies – fourth international conference, The American University of Rome, 13–15 June 2024

The fourth international conference of the Journal of Italian Cinema & Media Studies (JICMS) was held at The American University of Rome on 13–15 June 2024. The co-organizers were Flavia Laviosa (Wellesley College) and Catherine Ramsey-Portolano (The American University of Rome) and this year’s title was Re-examining the Past and Envisioning the Future of Italian Cinema and Media. Participants from five continents and various countries, with diverse academic backgrounds, including film studies, Italian studies, media studies, social sciences and industry practice, came together for three days of stimulating discussions and productive exchanges of ideas and perspectives. The keynote address ‘Non-fiction filmmaking in contemporary Italy’ was delivered by Áine O’Healy from Loyola Marymount University. The conference was further enriched by the presence of directors Paolo Benvenuti, Monica Guerritore and Liliana Cavani. This report provides an overview of the conference.

Life and growth of the Thirteen Marxist Feminist Theses

The fourth international Marxist feminist conference was the most international and best attended with around 700 participants, including Silvia Federici, Nancy Fraser, Tithi Bhattacharya, Lorena Cabnal, Ochy Curiel, Ana Cecilia Dinerstein, Elsa Dorlin, Jules Falquet, and Frigga Haug. The main themes of the panels established continuity with the previous conferences, from debates on intersectionality which overlap in various fields with practical and theoretical issues such as value, the state, law, care, production, and social reproduction to those that were closely linked to the thinking of new organizations and repertoires of struggle. This Special Issue is based on the plenary titled: the Thirteen Theses of Marxist Feminism. Frigga Haug, the author of The Thirteen Theses, considers all of them in her opening interview. The most widely debated theses by the Special Issue contributors are Theses I, II, and III on relations of production and the production of the means of life followed by theses from V to VIII which deal with intersectionality and how to study race, class and gender, the role of labor movement in the process of emancipation, and the issue of primary and secondary contradictions which is closely related to the development of an effective political emancipatory subject. The Special Issue closes with an interview with the philosopher Nancy Fraser on the three faces of labor.

Advances in structural research using electron microscopy in Russia (results of the fourth international conference RICCEM-2023)

The IV Russian International Conference on Cryo-Electron Microscopy (RICCEM-2023) was held at the Faculty of Biology of Lomonosov Moscow State University in a hybrid (offline and online) format and brought together more than 250 researchers from 10 countries. Following the conference, a special issue of the journal “Lomonosov Biology Journal” (“Vestnik Moskovskogo universiteta. Seria 16. Biologia”) was published. This article briefly summarizes the main results of the conference and the content of the works published in the special issue.

The organizing committee would like to extend a warm welcome to everyone who is attending and contributing to the “4th International Conferences on Civil and Environmental Engineering (ICCEE) 2022”. The theme of the conference is Toward Smart and Green Infrastructure for Achievement of Sustainability and Development Goals. The conference, held in Bali, Indonesia, aims to promote scientific and technological advancement, knowledge exchange, and cooperation among engineers and researchers in infrastructure development, civil and environmental studies, and other engineering-related fields.ICCEE 2022 is the fourth international conference held by the Departments of Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering, following the successful 2010 conference attended by 260 participants, 284 participants in 2015, and 292 participants in 2019, all of whom were local and foreign participants. ICCEE 2022 is a continuation of the first, second, and third conferences, and it will provide opportunities for researchers to present and publish their research, as well as serve as a venue for strengthening national, regional, and international research collaboration networks for the Departments of Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering. We will have one honorable keynote speaker and four invited speakers present during the day of plenary sessions. The Menzerath-Altmann law on the clause level in English texts

Abstract Menzerath-Altmann law (MAL) describes the relationship between the size of the construct and of its constituents, where the larger the whole, the smaller its parts. Despite numerous investigations dedicated to MAL, few studies have observed the relationship syntactically, especially at the clause level. The present study investigates three units in which clauses in English can be measured, i.e., argument, phrase, and word, by fitting MAL to the relationship between the size of the clause and its constituents. Results show that 1) clause length in phrases can be well fitted by probability distributions, while the goodness-of-fit is less favorable for clause length in arguments and words. 2) MAL holds reasonably well between the size of the clause in phrases and of the phrase in words under some conditions, i.e., within a specific range of construct size and text genres. 3) To summarize, the phrase, a notion proposed by Mačutek, Ján, Radek Čech & Jiří Milička. 2017. Menzerath-Altmann law in syntactic dependency structure. In Proceedings of the fourth international conference on dependency linguistics (Depling 2017), 100–107 under the theoretical framework of dependency grammar, is the most appropriate one to be the neighboring unit of the clause among the three measurement units. These findings may shed light on the features of syntactic structures and lead to a better understanding of the human language system.

Dialogue on the Future of Europe: Is Enlargement a Key to the Future?

This article concludes the presentations made at and the main lessons drawn from the international conference on Western Balkan enlargement held on December 6, 2021, within the framework of the pan-European dialogue on the future of Europe. The event was the fourth high-level international conference on the Future of Europe co-organized by the Ferenc Mádl Institute and the Ministry of Justice, and was attended by representatives of the European Union (EU), Hungarian, Serbian, and Slovenian politicians; and representatives from academia. The article briefly presents the EU context and the background of the enlargement in the Western Balkans. The presentations at the conference—almost without exception—highlighted the issues of credibility, political, economic, security, and strategic interests of the future of Europe in thinking about the future of the enlargement. Even though there are some slight differences regarding their approach to specific issues related to the advancement of European integration of the Western Balkans, every participant stressed the importance and urgency of their accession. The Hungarian government’s stance consisting of a firm support to the EU accession of the Western Balkans based and justified on their merits and the accomplishment of the required criteria, especially with regard to Serbia, was reaffirmed. In view of all this, the organization of the international conference by the Ferenc Mádl Institute of Comparative Law and the Ministry of Justice can be considered very timely and proactive.

4th International Conference on Technology and Electrical Engineering (CITIE 2021)

Preface The curricular project of Technology in Electricity and Electrical Engineering by cycles of the Universidad Distrital Francisco José de Caldas (Colombia) celebrates every two years its international conference. Unlike previous editions, during 2021 the Universidad Distrital has its facilities closed, and with restricted access, as a preventive measure to avoid the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Probably in two years, for CITIE 2023, the conference will return to its usual physical space in Aduanilla de Paiba, our flagship library. However, for this fourth version of CITIE, we opted for a distance event, organized entirely by videoconference, an experiment that, although not a feature mastered by our community, was a success.The fourth International Conference on Technology and Electrical Engineering (CITIE 2021) was held on November 11-12, 2021. This event was attended by researchers from the electrical area with papers mainly focused on electronic instrumentation, control, power systems, and electromagnetic compatibility. From the talks and presentations, it was evident that our research community remains active and produces cutting-edge research despite the conditions of restriction and social unrest typical of our political and socio-economic circumstances, strongly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.A total of 11 papers were submitted to CITIE 2021, of which 10 were approved by the jurors (conference committee members and international reviewers) in a double-blind evaluation process. The conference was held entirely online over two days, which included the test session, three 50-minute keynote speeches, and three author presentation sessions. The research papers were separated into three thematic sessions, Instrumentation and Control, Power Systems, and Electronic Compatibility. These papers were each given 20 minutes of presentation time, including five minutes for questions. The entire conference was broadcast live on the event’s YouTube channel, registering an average of 600 daily visits.I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the hard work of the entire CITIE 2021 committee. Their advice and support were fundamental to preparing for the conference. I would also like to thank the students of the Electrical Technology program who supported the videoconference platform and the live transmission. Likewise, a special thanks to the speakers and authors for considering CITIE 2021 as a means of dissemination of their researchers, and to the invited researchers, whose talks and discussions allowed to leave on the carpet countless ideas for further discussion and development of impact research.The three previous versions of CITIE allowed the development of activities such as business shows, workshops, and a degree of interaction that was not achieved in CITIE 2021. The face-to-face conferences allow a level of direct communication with authors and researchers that is difficult to replicate on a distance platform. Even so, CITIE continues to maintain its spirit of dissemination of research and innovation, as well as its function of identifying and promoting areas of research in the field of electrical energy. A whole systems approach to education redesign: A case study on the need for intergenerational perspectives and inclusion

AbstractThis study was commissioned by the Global Education Futures forum for presentation at its fourth International Conference in Moscow, Russia, from February 29 to March 2, 2016 (http://edu2035.org/#program). The objective was to conduct field research with a special focus on the vision of the future of education held by young people. This report presents some views and perspectives of my generation regarding what they want education to be like in the future. In northern California, my teachers Ms. B and Mr. Wahanik used the framework of questions and activities that my father and I developed to gather this kind of information by running a sort of “focus group” with my 10th Grade class and to find out what their views, perspective, opinions, ideas, hopes, and concerns are regarding this theme. A similar process was run with a group of young people in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Sdrawkcab scitamehtam: The case for understanding mathematics backwards

Despite the widespread acknowledgement of the need for graduates with quantitative problem-solving skills, many students enter university having relied heavily on pattern recognition techniques for high school mathematics. While these can often lead students to obtaining correct solutions for problems similar to those which they have practised, they do not lead to a deeper understanding of the material and, critically, may not develop more widely-applicable skills. Even when correct solutions are obtained, students can sometimes not understand or explain why their solution is indeed correct. Here, I present an argument in favour of avoiding predictability in question structures and, in particular, asking questions ``backwards'' to how they might traditionally be asked. Some mathematical topics readily lend themselves to such approaches --- the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus tells us that an integral problem is inherently linked to an antiderivative problem --- whereas other require much more care and subtlety to avoid routine or predictable assessments. I will discuss some preliminary results from a first year probability subject at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) which suggest that student understanding of material can be increased when they feel that prioritising pattern recognition over problem solving is unlikely to be rewarded with high marks. 4th International Consensus Conference on Advanced Breast Cancer (ABC4), Lisbon, November 4, 2017 : ABC4 Consensus: Assessment by a Panel of German Experts.

The fourth international advanced breast cancer consensus conference (ABC4) on the diagnosis and treatment of advanced breast cancer (ABC) headed by Professor Fatima Cardoso was once again held in Lisbon on November 2 – 4, 2017. To simplify matters, the abbreviation ABC will be used hereinafter in the text. In clinical practice, the abbreviation corresponds to metastatic breast cancer or locally far-advanced disease. This year the focus was on new developments in the treatment of ABC. Topics discussed included the importance of CDK4/6 inhibition in hormone receptor (HR)-positive ABC, the use of dual antibody blockade to treat HER2-positive ABC, PARP inhibition in triple-negative ABC and the potential therapeutic outcomes. Another major area discussed at the conference was BRCA-associated breast cancer, the treatment of cerebral metastasis, and individualized treatment decisions based on molecular testing (so-called precision medicine). As in previous years, close cooperation with representatives from patient organizations from around the world is an important aspect of the ABC conference. This cooperation was reinforced and expanded at the ABC4 conference. A global alliance was founded at the conclusion of the consensus conference, which aims to promote and coordinate the measures considered necessary by patient advocates worldwide. Because the panel of experts was composed of specialists from all over the world, it was inevitable that the ABC consensus also reflected country-specific features. As in previous years, a team of German breast cancer specialists who closely followed the consensus voting of the ABC panelists in Lisbon and intensively discussed the votes has therefore commented on the consensus in the context of the current German guidelines on the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer 1 , 2 used in clinical practice in Germany. The ABC consensus is based on the votes of the ABC panelists in Lisbon.

The article reviews the fourth international scientific conference “Visuality 2017: Tourism vs Heritage in a Creative City”. The text presents the course of the conference and the ideas of the speakers which covered a variety of related topics. The conference discussed the issues that arise in the creative city in both broad theoretical and specific practical terms. For instance, theoretical analyses of practical (political, everyday) debates on dealing with the Soviet cultural heritage in the region of Eastern Europe were proposed alongside novel approaches to multimedia technologies and their role in enhancing attractiveness and approachability of the creative city. Multiple ways of turning one’s being creative in a city as well as ways of seeing the creative city were discussed or suggested.

Once the data is uploaded the user is provided with a private and public key for trustworthy retrieval of the data file. Those keys are generated using a proposed modified RSA cryptosystem algorithm. A multilevel hash tree algorithm is used to efficiently audit the data file occasionally. The implementation and therefore the results show the potency and efficiency of the proposed algorithm compared to the existing algorithm.

'God Said to Abraham/Kill Me a Son': Why the Insanity Defense and the Incompetency Status are Compatible with and Required by the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and Basic Principles of Therapeutic Jurisprudence

Interpretations of the General Comments to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) — that command the abolition of the insanity defense and the incompetency status — make no theoretical or conceptual sense, disregard the history of how society has treated persons with serious mental disabilities who are charged with crime, and will lead to predictable torture of this population in prison, at the hands of both prison guards and other prisoners. Such interpretation also flies in the face of every precept of therapeutic jurisprudence. Support of this position exhibits a startling lack of understanding of the treatment of this population in prison settings, and ignores other articles of that Convention that support the continuation of this defense and this status, as well as other international human rights conventions that speak to the right to a “fair trial.” The abolition position is short-sighted and will lead to a worsening of the lives of an especially-marginalized and ignored segment of the population of persons with disabilities.This paper (a version of which was presented as a keynote address at the fourth international therapeutic jurisprudence conference at the University of Auckland, NZ) first discusses the significance of the CRPD, and why, when it is read as an integrated document, the interpretations in the General Comment and the supporting literature must be unequivocally rejected, looking at other Articles and other foundational documents of international human rights law. It then looks at the singular role of the insanity defense and incompetency status in legal history, (1) acknowledging that, while pleading insanity may be a bad option, it is still one that needs to be retained, and (2) pointing out that raising the incompetency status is not an admission of factual guilt (in contrast to the insanity defense, which is), and that trying a person who is unable to cooperate with her counsel and rationally understand the proceedings against her makes it more likely that she will be convicted of crimes of which she may not be guilty, a base and basic violation of human decency.It then considers the Comment that is at the center of this controversy, concluding that it makes no conceptual sense, and that, if implemented, it would violate due process, dignity and fair trial mandates, and, inevitably, lead to the torture of persons with mental disabilities who are charged with and convicted of crimes (in the case of those who “should be” found incompetent to stand trial, including those who are factually innocent), a denouement that is even more staggering when we realize that there is no indication that this outcome was ever in the minds of the drafters, that it was never debated, and that there is nothing to suggest that the populations in question were ever consulted.Finally, the abolition of the defense and status violates every precept of therapeutic jurisprudence, the aim of which is to determine whether legal rules, procedures, and lawyer roles can or should be reshaped to enhance their therapeutic potential while not subordinating due process principles, premised on the core values of voice, validation and voluntariness. Elimination of the insanity defense and incompetency status make it virtually impossible that these values will be privileged, and make it more likely that sanist values in jails and prisons will fester to an even greater extent than they do now.
