Strategic human capital analytics and new venture performance: role of dual nationality founding member

PurposeStrategic human capital analytics (SHCA) has proven to be promising for improved organizational performance; however, research remains unclear about its influence on new venture performance. Building on the dynamic capabilities view (DCV), this study investigates the relationship between SHCA and new venture performance via generative capabilities with the moderating role of dual nationality founding members.Design/methodology/approachA quantitative research study has been carried out. Data was collected via a survey form from 313 founding members of new tech ventures and analyzed using Hayes process macro model.FindingsResearch results show that the generative capability mediates the linkages between SHCA and new venture performance. Whereas, the dual nationality of a founding member strengthens the linkages between SHCA and generative capability due to their diverse perspective, larger networks, cognitive flexibility, and resilience, which are important for generative capabilities and SHCA.Originality/valueThe originality of these results lies in the exploration of the linkages between dual nationality and generative capability, as well as the special elements, such as diverse perspectives, larger networks, cognitive flexibility, and resilience, which are highlighted as possible advantages of dual nationality in the context of SHCA and new venture performance.

The PRIDE database at 20 years: 2025 update.

The PRoteomics IDEntifications (PRIDE) database (https://www.ebi.ac.uk/pride/) is the world's leading mass spectrometry (MS)-based proteomics data repository and one of the founding members of the ProteomeXchange consortium. This manuscript summarizes the developments in PRIDE resources and related tools for the last three years. The number of submitted datasets to PRIDE Archive (the archival component of PRIDE) has reached on average around 534 datasets per month. This has been possible thanks to continuous improvements in infrastructure such as a new file transfer protocol for very large datasets (Globus), a new data resubmission pipeline and an automatic dataset validation process. Additionally, we will highlight novel activities such as the availability of the PRIDE chatbot (based on the use of open-source Large Language Models), and our work to improve support for MS crosslinking datasets. Furthermore, we will describe how we have increased our efforts to reuse, reanalyze and disseminate high-quality proteomics data into added-value resources such as UniProt, Ensembl and Expression Atlas.

Herman G. Canady: A reintroduction.

For nearly four decades, Herman G. Canady actively promoted psychological science in the public interest. A skillful leader and administrator, Canady helped to establish one of the first national organizations of Black psychologists and was purportedly one of the founding members of the West Virginia State Psychological Association. He also collaborated with a diverse range of professional colleagues on relevant social issues of the time. Despite the depth and breadth of Canady's contributions to psychology, very little is known about his impact on the field. The goal of this article is to reintroduce the discipline to Canady. Drawing upon a range of archival materials, personal correspondence, and interviews, I highlight how Canady used the platform of psychological science in ways that not only redefined "racial psychology," but also brought attention to educational inequities, stressed the importance of institution-building, and demonstrated the utility of cross-cultural alliances for addressing important social causes. Structures of Epstein-Barr virus and Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus virions reveal species-specific tegument and envelope features.

Discovered in 1964, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is the first identified human oncogenic virus and the founding member of the gammaherpesvirus subfamily. In 1994, another cancer-causing virus was discovered in lesions of AIDS patients and later named Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV), the second human gammaherpesvirus. Despite the historical importance of EBV and KSHV, technical difficulties with isolating large quantities of these viruses and the pleiomorphic nature of their envelope and tegument layers have limited structural characterization of their virions. In this study, we employed the latest technologies in cryogenic electron microscopy (cryoEM) and tomography (cryoET) supplemented with an artificial intelligence-powered data processing software package to reconstruct 3D structures of the EBV and KSHV virions. We uncovered unique properties of the envelope glycoproteins and tegument layers of both EBV and KSHV. Comparison of these features with their non-tumorigenic counterparts provides insights into their relevance during infection.

We are Who we Represent: A Theory of “Immersive” Representation in Student Activism

Abstract Children and young people have a right to freedom of association and to have their views given due weight when they act collectively. However, when they come together in groups to engage in collective action, in school and elsewhere, they are often criticised for not being “representative” of all/other young people. The concept, while frequently cited, remains undefined and fails to incorporate how young people understand, experience and enact representation. This article presents data from an empirical study with youth activists who established a Secondary Schools Students’ Union during the Covid-19 pandemic to lobby for change in education decision-making. The study was carried out as a collaboration between two university-based researchers and two secondary school students who were founding members of the union. Drawing on focus groups and interviews with union executive members, this article presents findings that convey young people’s navigation of adults’ perceptions of their representativeness, focusing on issues of legitimacy and efficacy. Based on this study, we propose a new youth co-authored and youth-informed theory of representation that conceptualises it as immersive and mutually symbiotic and, we suggest, enables meaningful implementation of child and youth activists’ civil and political rights.

ASEAN, and Indonesia’s Rising Influence In The Region

When one looks at the world map, Indonesia is not really visible in a very obvious manner, due to it being an archipelago, scattered over thousands of islands in South East Asia. However, when one reads into it, they realize that it is actually the fourth most populous country on earth, and holds quite a bit of diplomatic power as well. Indonesia is one of the founding members of ASEAN, the Association of South-East Asian Nations. ASEAN houses major natural resources, a huge chunk of Earth’s population, and together, the 10 ASEAN member states form one of the busiest trade routes in the world. To keep it simple, ASEAN is a really important organisation, and Indonesia, being one of the founding members, as well as the largest country in it, acts as the de-facto leader. Unfortunately, Indonesia is prone to many natural disasters due to its unfortunate geographic location, smack in the Pacific Ring of Fire. Recent major disasters have weakened Indonesia’s position, and many countries now do not consider Indonesia as the de-facto leader of ASEAN. This research focuses on Indonesia’s rise and fall as the undisputed leader of ASEAN, and what the future holds in store for Indonesia. To conduct this research, numerous research papers have been referred to and cited, as well as fresh information has been collected on a primary data basis. The primary data is collected by interviewing 15 Indonesian citizens, as well as senior officials at the Consulate General of Indonesia, Mumbai. Thus, the research presents the observations derived from interviewing two sides, the perspective of the Indonesian citizens, as well as the perspective of the Indonesian government. The research aims to answer some questions such as if Indonesia is prepared to tackle the current and future issues arising in ASEAN, being the leader. The research goes a step further to figure out if the Pacific Ring of Fire affects the geopolitics of Indonesia, and finally, the research looks at if the Indonesian government, and their people, the citizens look eye to eye? All of the interviews of the Indonesian citizens have been conducted virtually via Google Forms, and a meeting at the Consulate was set up in Mumbai to get the government’s perspective.

Vittorio Putti's decalogue of fractures: a historical perspective in orthopaedic trauma practice.

This article explores the historical significance and lasting impact of Vittorio Putti's "Decalogue of Fractures" in the field of orthopedic trauma. Putti served as director of the Rizzoli Orthopedic Institute in Bologna from 1915 until his death in 1940 and was one of the founding members of the "Société Internationale de Chirurgie Orthopédique et de Traumatologie" (SICOT). He also played a key role in organizing the third SICOT World Congress, held in Bologna in 1936.The "Decalogue" distills Putti's extensive clinical experience and remains a cornerstone of modern traumatology. He developed the *Decalogue* to enhance the principles of fracture treatment, addressing what he viewed as suboptimal outcomes. This article examines each of the tenets, emphasizing their influence on contemporary fracture management and the evolution of orthopaedic trauma care. It also reflects on Putti's forward-thinking vision for a comprehensive trauma network, underscoring his belief in the critical importance of specialization and centralization to ensure efficiency, quality, and consistency, principles that continue to shape orthopaedic practice today.

Regional Approach to Boosting Local Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Capacity: A Critique of the East African Community Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Plan of Action

Abstract The East African Community (EAC) has had a chequered history, evidenced by multiple changes of names and objectives, and a hiatus lasting more than two decades following a collapse in 1977. It was resuscitated in 1999 by its founding members (Uganda, Tanzania, and Kenya). That four other partner states have since joined is a clear testament to the effectiveness of its overhaul. The community is regulated by the EAC Treaty which promotes collective actions in several areas of mutual interests. Plagued by an ongoing access-to-medicines conundrum, EAC governments have considered collective action as recommended by the Treaty. This effort began around the 2010s when policy measures aimed at exploring collective solutions were adopted with a view to replacing reliance on importation and external drug donation with a gradually developed regional pharmaceutical production capacity. EAC policies such as the Policy/Protocol on TRIPS Flexibilities, the Medicines Registration Harmonisation Initiative, the Draft Anti-Counterfeit Policy, and a Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Plan of Action (EAC PMP) have since been developed to achieve this ambitious goal. Using both doctrinal and empirical (semi-structured interviews) methods, this paper examines the EAC PMP – the ‘be all’ of the policies. The priority actions outlined under the plan’s six pillars and presented as a bankable pathway to self-sufficiency in pharmaceutical production are critiqued. The paper finds considerable implementation of the drug harmonisation theme, while the others (leveraging TRIPS flexibilities, ensuring coherence, and boosting research and development and technology transfer) remain largely unimplemented.

DDBJ update in 2024: the DDBJ Group Cloud service for sharing pre-publication data.

The Bioinformation and DNA Data Bank of Japan Center (DDBJ Center, https://www.ddbj.nig.ac.jp) provides public databases that cover a wide range of fields in life sciences. As a founding member of the International Nucleotide Sequence Database Collaboration (INSDC), the DDBJ Center accepts and distributes nucleotide sequence data ranging from raw reads to assembled and annotated sequences with the National Center for Biotechnology Information and the European Bioinformatics Institute. Besides INSDC databases, the DDBJ Center provides databases for functional genomics (Genomic Expression Archive), metabolomics (MetaboBank), human genetic variations (TogoVar-repository) and human genetic and phenotypic data (Japanese Genotype-phenotype Archive). These database systems have been built on the National Institute of Genetics supercomputer, which is also a platform for the DDBJ Group Cloud (DGC) services for sharing and analysis of pre-publication data among research groups. This paper reports recent updates on the databases and the services of the DDBJ Center, highlighting the DGC service.

Sinwar’s Rise in Hamas: An In-depth Analysis of Internal Dynamics and Regional Interactions

Why History Matters? Populist Radical Right Governments in the EU and Their Foreign Policy

ABSTRACT Four European populist radical right (PRR) prime minister parties (PiS, Fidesz, SDS and FdI) have displayed differing approaches to foreign policy. In part, these differences can be explained by their specific visions of history. Central and Eastern European (CEE) parties such as PiS, Fidesz and to a certain extent SDS, became more radical and Eurosceptic when in power. FdI, on the other hand, became less Eurosceptic and more mainstream after coming to power. CEE parties have constructed their identities around anti-communism and the notion of Western betrayal, making the liberal West and the EU their significant Other. On the contrary, for FdI it is more difficult to have the EU as a significant Other in the same sense, because Italy was a founding member of the EU and its historical grievances are not directed at the West. The Russian invasion of Ukraine has also been approached and used differently by the leaders of these parties. Giorgia Meloni, Janez Janša and, at least initially, Jarosław Kaczyński used the war to strengthen their European credentials, while Viktor Orbán used it to intensify his fight against the liberal West.

Future of Hygieia Health Private Limited

The case revolves around the dilemma faced by the existing co-founders of Hygieia Health Private Limited (hereafter, Hygieia) in managing a potential startup with an amazing product but declining investor confidence due to the sudden exit of one of the co-founders. Hygieia, a tech services company that started in September 2016, represented the medical healthcare sector that served the niche customer segment—pregnant women. The startup was considered to be one of the promising businesses by early-stage tech funders. However, one of the co-founders suddenly announced that he would leave the company without parting with his stake in it. This created a major problem for the other founder members in moving ahead. The case examines the factors contributing to the crises and dilemmas faced by Hygieia’s co-founders, which led them to devise a strategic plan to overcome these challenges. It emphasizes the difficulties encountered by a growing startup and highlights the importance of having a strong team to sustain and expand the business. Additionally, the case explores relevant valuation concepts in a startup context. It provides insights into the significance of human capital in a tech startup using the people, opportunity, context and deal (POCD) framework, explores various financing options available for startups and outlines key valuation methods.

Walter Schuetze and the Numbers Game: Advocate for Reform, Champion of Independence, Promoter of Fair Value, and Proponent of Simplification

ABSTRACT This paper examines the life of Walter Schuetze (1932–2017) and his contributions to the accounting profession. He was a public accountant, a founding member of the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB), the Chief Accountant for the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), a corporate board member, and an advocate for accounting reform. In 2008, he was inducted into the Accounting Hall of Fame. This paper shows how Walter Schuetze has left a quiet but impactful legacy with lessons learned that still have applicability to the accounting profession today.

Tinjauan Yuridis terhadap Perbuatan Melawan Hukum Pembina Yayasan yang Melakukan Penyalahgunaan Wewenang dalam Pergantian Organ Yayasan

The replacement of Foundation Organs is carried out when the term of office of the foundation organ has expired and is not re-elected or when the foundation organ has committed acts deemed detrimental to the foundation by the foundation founder as conducted based on the foundation founder's meeting. If the foundation meeting is not held in accordance with quorum provisions stipulated in the Foundation Law and the Articles of Association, then the founder must be held responsible for his actions. This study was conducted using normative research methods. The results show that the unlawful act committed by the founder in the replacement of foundation organs is the abuse of authority by not adhering to the quorum provisions of the founder's meeting by 2/3 of the founder members, while the responsibility for the unlawful acts refers to civil liability in accordance by Article 1365 of the Civil Code. The legal consequences of such unlawful acts on the foundation organ include the occurrence of dualism in the management of the foundation, the invalidity of decisions made by the newly appointed organ which was unlawfully appointed, and damages to third parties.

The Personalist Leadership Style of Fabio Vásquez: A Case Study on the Origins of the ELN

This article examines the personalist leadership style of Fabio Vásquez, a founding member of the Ejército de Liberación Nacional (ELN), the Colombian guerrilla group. Personalism, as a theoretical framework for understanding Latin American leaders, has primarily focused on traditional political practices, emphasizing the tensions and conflicts among formal institutions, political parties, and personalist politicians. While these studies provide valuable insights, they overlook leaders who operate outside conventional political structures who also rely on personalist strategies to attract and retain followers. This article seeks to bridge this gap by presenting a case study of Vásquez’s leadership style. In an era marked by the resurgence of populism and renewed interest in the effects of personalism on conventional politics, this article argues that examining personalist leadership within revolutionary insurgent groups that reject conventional party politics is necessary for a thorough understanding of the phenomenon. In particular, it offers a comprehensive overview of how Vásquez’s personalist strategies shaped the ELN’s early insurgency, ultimately revealing the strengths and vulnerabilities of such leadership within revolutionary movements.

Schild Analysis of the Interaction between Parthenolide and Cocaine Suggests an Allosteric Relationship for Their Effects on Planarian Motility.

The freshwater planarian is an emerging animal model in neuroscience due to its centralized nervous system that closely parallels closely parallels the nervous system of vertebrates. Cocaine, an abused drug, is the 'founding member' of the local anesthetic family. Parthenolide, a sesquiterpene lactone, acts as a behavioral and physiological antagonist of cocaine in planarians and rats, respectively. Previous work from our laboratory showed that both parthenolide and cocaine reduced planarian motility and that parthenolide reversed the cocaine-induced motility decrease at concentrations where parthenolide does not affect the movement of the worms. However, the exact mechanism of the cocaine/parthenolide antagonism is unknown. Here, we report the results of a Schild analysis to explore the parthenolide/cocaine relationship in the planarian Girardia tigrina. The Schild slopes of a family of concentration-response curves of parthenolide ± a single concentration of cocaine and vice versa were -0.55 and -0.36, respectively. These slopes were not statistically different from each other. Interestingly, the slope corresponding to the parthenolide ± cocaine (but not the cocaine ± parthenolide) data set was statistically different from -1. Our data suggest an allosteric relationship between cocaine and parthenolide for their effect on planarian motility. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study about the mechanism of action of the antagonism between cocaine and parthenolide. Further studies are needed to determine the specific nature of the parthenolide/cocaine target(s) in this organism.

Biosynthesis of peptide-nucleobase hybrids in ribosomal peptides.

The main biopolymers in nature are oligonucleotides and polypeptides. However, naturally occurring peptide-nucleobase hybrids are rare. Here we report the characterization of the founding member of a class of peptide-nucleobase hybrid natural products with a pyrimidone motif from a widely distributed ribosomally synthesized and post-translationally modified (RiPP) biosynthetic pathway. This pathway features two steps where a heteromeric RRE-YcaO-dehydrogenase complex catalyzes the formation of a six-membered pyrimidone ring from an asparagine residue on the precursor peptide, and an acyl esterase selectively recognizes this moiety to cleave the C-terminal follower peptide. Mechanistic studies reveal that the pyrimidone formation occurs in a substrate-assisted catalysis manner, requiring a His residue in the precursor to activate asparagine for heterocyclization. Our study expands the chemotypes of RiPP natural products and the catalytic scope of YcaO enzymes. This discovery opens avenues to create artificial biohybrid molecules that resemble both peptide and nucleobase, a modality of growing interest.

Discovery of Dehydrogenated Imipridone Derivatives as Activators of Human Caseinolytic Protease P.

Based on the founding member of imipridones, ONC201, a class of dehydrogenated imipridone derivatives was designed, synthesized, and evaluated in a series of biochemical and biological assays as human caseinolytic protease P (hClpP) activators. Mechanism studies for one of the most potent compounds, XT6, indicated that it can potently bind to both recombinant and cellular hClpP, effectively promote the formation of hClpP tetradecamer, efficiently induce the degradation of hClpP substrates, robustly upregulate the expression of ATF4, and strongly inhibit the phosphorylations of AKT and ERK. More importantly, XT6 exhibited a promising pharmacokinetic profile in rats and could penetrate the blood brain barrier. It showed highly potent in vivo antitumor activity in a MIAPACA2 cell line derived pancreatic cancer model in BALB/c nude mice.

Mutations in linker-2 of KLF1 impair expression of membrane transporters and cytoskeletal proteins causing hemolysis

The SP/KLF family of transcription factors harbour three C-terminal C2H2 zinc fingers interspersed by two linkers which confers DNA-binding to a 9-10 bp motif. Mutations in KLF1, the founding member of the family, are common. Missense mutations in linker two result in a mild phenotype. However, when co-inherited with loss-of-function mutations, they result in severe non-spherocytic hemolytic anemia. We generate a mouse model of this disease by crossing Klf1+/− mice with Klf1H350R/+ mice that harbour a missense mutation in linker-2. Klf1H350R/− mice exhibit severe hemolysis without thalassemia. RNA-seq demonstrate loss of expression of genes encoding transmembrane and cytoskeletal proteins, but not globins. ChIP-seq show no change in DNA-binding specificity, but a global reduction in affinity, which is confirmed using recombinant proteins and in vitro binding assays. This study provides new insights into how linker mutations in zinc finger transcription factors result in different phenotypes to those caused by loss-of-function mutations.

The gender gap in the first deal: Equity split among founding teams

We investigate the gender gap in equity splits among members of founding teams using proprietary survey data on Japanese startups. The results reveal that, on average, female founder chief executive officers (CEOs) own 12 percentage points less equity than male founder CEOs. The gender equity gap is more pronounced in founding teams in which the founder CEO is a woman and the other founding members are men. However, the results vary depending on the founding teams’ characteristics. Notably, the gender equity gap is observed only in teams with individuals belonging to older generations and in teams from regions (prefectures) with great gender inequality. The findings indicate that gender norms influence the gender equity gap.
