Design and implementation of a prototype of the entity Control Element (CE) of the Architecture ForCES

This paper presents the designed an implementation of a prototype with the Forwarding and Control Element Separation (ForCES) Architecture. That is to say, which allows each of the elements to be improved separately and then interconnected through the ForCES protocol, even in remote locations. The Control Element (CE) is the logical entity that is part of the control plane and is responsible for managing Forwarding Elements (FE) of the data plane. The ForCES architecture allows you to see these two elements (the CE and the FE through the ForCES protocol) as a single Network Element (NE), even if they are located in remote sites each. To demonstrate this principle, a network testbed scenario was implemented, based on two Local Area Networks (LAN). The LAN 1, for the CEs and the LAN 2 for the FEs, once communicated through the ForCES protocol, the different LFBs configurations of the ARP, SNMP, RIP protocols were used to demonstrate their operation.

Prioritized admission control with load distribution over multiple controllers for scalable SDN-based mobile networks

Software-defined networking (SDN) is a promising networking paradigm towards a centralized network control plane decoupled from the forwarding plane. Owing to its intrinsic separated architecture between the control and forwarding plane (OpenFlow switch specification 1.5.0. https://www.opennetworking.org/images/stories/downloads/sdn-resources/onf-specifications/openflow/openflow-switch-v1.5.0.noipr.pdf , 2014; Doria et al. in Forwarding and control element separation (ForCES) protocol specification. http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc5810 ), SDN control plane is more sensitive to scalability concerns compared to traditional management systems (GPP TS 32.101. Telecommunication management; Principles and high level requirements (Release 14), 2017) because forwarding plane nodes no longer have the ability to make decisions of incoming traffics which means forwarding plane performance is highly dependent on the control plane’s response (Karakus and Durresi in Comput Netw 112: 279–293, 2016; Oktian et al. in Comput Netw 121: 100–111, 2017; Bianco et al. in Comput Commun 102:130–138, 2016). To solve the problem, SDN architectures employing multiple controllers have been proposed. However, when the load is concentrated on certain controllers, incoming requests to the controllers can be blocked while others are idle resulting in low efficiency overall. Especially, in mobile networks, this problem can become critical because blocking or delay of requests related to handover causes a severe quality of service degradation. This paper proposes a prioritized admission control scheme with load distribution over multiple controllers for scalable SDN-based mobile networks in which handover messages are admitted with high priority and load distribution is performed over multiple controllers to prevent blocking of handover messages. From the performance evaluation of the proposed scheme, the blocking probability of handover messages can be reduced and controller resources can be efficiently utilized without significant additional signaling load compared to conventional schemes.

Performance optimisation of control channel in ForCES‐based software defined network

The traditional network architecture cannot meet the growing needs of increasingly diverse network applications. The new generation network architectures, software defined network (SDN) which have features of high openness, flexibility, scalability and high controllability have widely been studied. However, a series of new problems are also produced in this new architecture, such as security problem resulted from the high openness, and performance problem resulted from the high flexibility. Currently, the researchers are mainly concentrated in the implementation and standardisation of SDN. There is no good approach to evaluate and optimise the system performance. This studies the performance problems unresolved in SDN research area, and proposed an idea and method to analyse the control channel of ForCES (Forwarding and Control Element Separation)-based SDN by using the stochastic network calculus theory. First, the architecture of ForCES-based SDN is introduced. Then, the performance model of the channel is given. Based on the model, an optimisation method to performance is detailed. This study also gives a simulation by using NS-2 (Network Simulator, Version 2) to verify the correctness and reliability of the performance model.

ForSA - A new software defined network architecture based on forCES

In recent years, SDN (Software Defined Network) as a new network architecture has become the hot research point. Meanwhile, the well-known OpenFlow-based SDN got a lot of attention. But it can't provide a flexible and effective network resource description method. As an open programmable technology, ForCES (Forwarding and Control Element Separation) has also been concerned. However, ForCES is confined within a single network node and cannot be applied to the entire network. This paper proposes a new architecture - ForSA (ForCESbased SDN architecture). The architecture is added a configuration layer based on the traditional SDN architecture, which solves the problem that the northbound interface is not clear between the application layer and the control layer in the SDN architecture. ForSA also implements the compatibility within various forwarding devices in the forwarding layer.

Network Programmability With ForCES

Network programmability has re-emerged as a top item of the networking research agenda since Software Defined Networking (SDN) gained wide acceptance simultaneously in vendor product line plans and operator expectations for future deployments. Key ingredients for the successful deployment of SDN technologies are standardized models, mechanisms, and protocols for the separation of the control and forwarding planes. The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) standardization effort on Forwarding and Control Element Separation (ForCES) has published a set of standards track documents which specify in detail a comprehensive architectural framework and the respective standard protocols which can be employed to implement the separation of these two planes in a flexible, scalable, and vendor-agnostic yet fully interoperable manner. The IETF standards on ForCES define how to achieve said separation through a complete and modular system model of the forwarding plane elements. In the ForCES model every network element is composed of numerous logically separate and well-defined functional entities that cooperate to provide the desired overall functionality, such as a routing or IP switching. The elegance of the model lies in the fact that a ForCES-based implementation of a network element is indistinguishable from a traditional (“closed-box”) network element and therefore can be deployed in the field without any need for migration to a new architecture. Conversely, ForCES allows for rapid prototyping and agile deployment of new architectures as emphasis is placed on software-defined functionality and full programmability. The difference of ForCES from other SDN approaches that depend on logically centralized controllers and the deployment of solely simple or “dumb” switches is that ForCES standards provide a complete toolbox to design, implement, and interoperate ForCES-based network elements with both previously deployed infrastructures as well as in experimental or early-deployment phase endeavors. An example of the former is the implementation of 3GPP-standardized network elements such as a packet gateway (PGW). Examples of the latter include the use of ForCES for network function virtualization (NFV) proofs-of-concepts. This paper surveys the programmable networks and SDN area and provides a comprehensive tutorial on ForCES by summarizing numerous standards documents and thus making the technology easily understood by the wider research community. We present the design goals, choices, and tradeoffs for this standardized approach for network programmability and provide a thorough primer on the ForCES model and protocol. This paper also surveys recent independent interoperable implementations that showcase the full spectrum of ForCES applications in the era of NFV and SDN.

Resource scheduling algorithm and ecnomic model in ForCES networks

Resource scheduling algorithm for ForCES (Forwarding and Control Element Separation) networks need to meet the flexibility, programmability and scalability of node resources. DBC (Deadline Budget Constrain) algorithm relies on users select cost or time priority, then scheduling to meet the requirements of users. However, this priority strategy of users is relatively simple, and cannot adapt to dynamic change of resources, it is inevitable to reduce the QoS. In order to improve QoS, we refer to the economic model and resource scheduling model of cloud computing, use SAL (Service Level Agreement) as pricing strategy, on the basis of DBC algorithm, propose an DABP (Deadline And Budget Priority based on DBC) algorithm for ForCES networks, DABP combines both budget and time priority to scheduling. In simulation and test, we compare the task fnish time and cost of DABP algorithm with DP (Deadline Priority) algorithm and BP (Budget Priority) algorithm, the analysis results show that DABP algorithm make the task complete with less cost within deadline, benifcal to load balancing of ForCES networks.

Scheduling model and performance analysis in transport mapping layer of control element in forwarding and control element separation system

SUMMARYThe transport mapping layer (TML) scheduling model in forwarding and control element separation (ForCES) system is important because it not only should be able to process the messages with different priorities but also can solve the fairness and robustness problems in network element level. In this paper, a two‐stage scheduling scheme with strict priority and general processor share scheduling is proposed. In a stochastic network calculus framework and on the basis of moment‐generating functions, bounds on average backlogs and delays of all channels are derived. The performance solving approach presented in this paper is quite general and practical, and the results may be used in other fields easily, without limiting ForCES CE TML. Numerical examples are presented to test the bounds, which show the scheduling scheme is practical and well suited for CE TML requirements. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

An Analysis and Design of the Redirection Schema in ForCES

The idea of Forwarding and Control Element Separation has widely accepted by next generation network researchers, the regain attention of IETF (The Internet Engineering Task Force) ForCES (Forwarding and Control Element Separation) is the best proof. An IP tunnel-based redirection schema was proposed to solve the problem of routing protocol messages interaction between ForCES router and the external merchant routers. The technology of network virtualization is introduced to map network interface from ForCES FE (Forwarding Element) to CE (Control Element) which collaborating with the redirect schema.

The Design and Research of Cluster Router Based on ForCES Protocol

Cluster router is the trend of router development in the future, it enables every router in cluster to cooperate with each other very well. Besides, it greatly expands the capacity of router, and makes the network topology and routing strategies become simple and clear. This paper proposed a architecture based on Forwarding and Control Element Separation (ForCES) cluster, including control module and forwarding module, they are composed of a large number of PCs. The architecture solved the problem of the dynamic service deployment of Logical Function Block (LFB) model and so on, which is an evidence of improving the performance of the existing router by achieving the forwarding model.

Analysis and Implementation of an Open Programmable Router Based on Forwarding and Control Element Separation

A router architecture based upon ForCES (Forwarding and Control Element Separation), which is being standardized by IETF ForCES working group, gains its competitive advantage over traditional router architectures in flexibility, programmability, and cost-effectiveness. In this paper, design and implementation of a ForCES-based router (ForTER) is illustrated. Firstly, the implementation architecture of ForTER is discussed. Then, a layered software model, which well illustrates ForCES features, is proposed. Based on the model, design and implementation of Control Element (CE) and Forwarding Element (FE) in ForTER are introduced in detail. Moreover, security for ForTER is considered and an algorithm to prevent DoS attacks is presented. Lastly, experiments of ForTER are illustrated for routing and running routing protocols, network management, DoS attack prevention, etc. The experimental results show the feasibility of the ForTER design. Consequently, the ForTER implementation basically testifies the feasibility of ForCES architecture and some IETF ForCES specifications.

Dynamic service deployment in a distributed heterogeneous cluster based router (DHCR)

This paper presents the design, implementation and evaluation of an extensible, scalable and distributed heterogeneous cluster based programmable router, called DHCR (Distributed Heterogeneous Cluster based Router), capable of supporting and deploying network services at run time. DHCR is a software IP router relying on heterogeneous cluster composed of separated computers with different hardware and software architecture capabilities, running different operating systems and interconnected through a high speed network connection. The DHCR ensures dynamic deployment of services and distributed control of router components (forwarding and routing elements) over heterogeneous system environments. The DHCR combines the IETF ForCES (Forwarding and Control Element Separation) architecture with software component technologies to meet the requirements of the next generation software routers. To ensure reliable and transparent communication between separated, decentralized and heterogeneous router components, the CORBA based middleware technology is used to support the DHCR internal communication. The paper also explores the use of the CORBA Component Model (CCM) to design and implement a modular, distributed and heterogeneous forwarding path for the DHCR router architecture. The CCM based forwarding plane ensures dynamic reconfiguration of the data path topology needed for low-level service deployment. Results on achievable performance using the proposed DHCR router are reported.

Configurable software-based edge router architecture

This paper explores and proposes the use of open programmable router technologies to achieve dynamic configuration, adaptation and management of network entities. The objective is to provide highly dynamic and flexible edge router technology to support the interconnection between emerging short range wireless technologies such as WPANs and IP based networks. To improve current software based edge router designs, the paper merges the Click framework (an open source software architecture for the forwarding plane) and the Forwarding and Control Element Separation (ForCES) principle. The proposed architecture is implemented on a real testbed based on standard PCs and open source operating systems. Results on achievable performance using these software based solutions and Click are reported. The impact on traffic flows and applications in terms of packet losses and delays is evaluated.
