Formation of globular clusters in dwarf galaxies of the Local Group

ABSTRACT The existence of globular clusters (GCs) in a few satellite galaxies, and their absence in majority of dwarf galaxies, present a challenge for models attempting to understand the origins of GCs. In addition to GC presence appearing stochastic and difficult to describe with average trends, in the smallest satellite galaxies GCs contribute a substantial fraction of total stellar mass. We investigate the stochasticity and number of GCs in dwarf galaxies using an updated version of our model that links the formation of GCs to the growth of the host galaxy mass. We find that more than 50 per cent of dwarf galaxies with stellar mass $M_{\star }\lesssim 2\times 10^7\, \mathrm{M}_\odot$ do not host GCs, whereas dwarfs with $M_{\star }\sim 10^8\, \mathrm{M}_\odot$ almost always contain some GCs, with a median number ∼10 at z = 0. These predictions are in agreement with the observations of the Local Volume dwarfs. We also confirm the near-linear GC system mass–halo mass relation down to $M_{\mathrm{h}}\simeq 10^8\, \mathrm{M}_\odot$ under the assumption that GC formation and evolution in galaxies of all mass can be described by the same physical model. A detailed case study of two model dwarfs that resemble the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy shows that observational samples can be notably biased by incompleteness below detection limit and at large radii.

On the use of field RR Lyrae as galactic probes – VI. Mixed mode RR Lyrae variables in Fornax and in nearby dwarf galaxies

ABSTRACT We investigate the properties of the mixed-mode (RRd) RR Lyrae (RRL) variables in the Fornax dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy by using B- and V-band time series collected over 24 yr. We compare the properties of the RRds in Fornax with those in the Magellanic Clouds and in nearby dSphs, with special focus on Sculptor. We found that the ratio of RRds over the total number of RRLs decreases with metallicity. Typically, dSphs have very few RRds with 0.49≲ P0 ≲0.53 d, but Fornax fills this period gap in the Petersen diagram (ratio between first overtone over fundamental period versus fundamental period). We also found that the distribution in the Petersen diagram of Fornax RRds is similar to Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) RRds, thus suggesting that their old stars have a similar metallicity distribution. We introduce the Period–Amplitude RatioS diagram, a new pulsation diagnostics independent of distance and reddening. We found that Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) RRds in this plane are distributed along a short- and a long-period sequence that we identified as the metal-rich and the metal-poor component. These two groups are also clearly separated in the Petersen and Bailey (luminosity amplitude versus logarithmic period) diagrams. This circumstantial evidence indicates that the two groups have different evolutionary properties. All the pulsation diagnostics adopted in this investigation suggest that old stellar populations in Fornax and Sculptor dSphs underwent different chemical enrichment histories. Fornax RRds are similar to SMC RRds, while Sculptor RRds are more similar to the metal-rich component of the LMC RRds.

Assessment of Dark Matter Models Using Dark Matter Correlations across Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies

The predicted size of dark matter substructures in kilo-parsec scales is model-dependent. Therefore, if the correlations between dark matter mass densities as a function of the distances between them are measured via observations, we can scrutinize dark matter scenarios. In this paper, we present an assessment procedure of dark matter scenarios. First, we use Gaia’s data to infer the single-body phase-space density of the stars in the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy. The latter, together with the Jeans equation, after eliminating the gravitational potential using the Poisson equation, reveals the mass density of dark matter as a function of its position in the galaxy. We derive the correlations between dark matter mass densities as a function of distances between them. No statistically significant correlation is observed. Second, for the sake of comparison with the standard cold dark matter, we also compute the correlations between dark matter mass densities in a small halo of the Eagle hydrodynamics simulation. We show that the correlations from the simulation and from Gaia are in agreement. Third, we show that Gaia observations can be used to limit the parameter space of the Ginzburg–Landau statistical field theory of dark matter mass densities and subsequently shrink the parameter space of any dark matter model. As two examples, we show how to leave limitations on (i) a classic gas dark matter and (ii) a superfluid dark matter.

We determine three independent Population II distance moduli to the Fornax dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy, using wide-field, ground-based VI imaging acquired with the Magellan-Baade telescope at Las Campanas Observatory. After subtracting foreground stars using Gaia EDR3 proper motions, we measure an I-band tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) magnitude of mag, with a calibration based in the LMC giving a distance modulus of mag. We determine an RR Lyrae (RRL) distance from template mean magnitudes, with periods adopted from the literature. Adopting a Gaia DR2 calibration of first overtone RRL period–luminosity and period–Wesenheit relations, we find mag and mag. Finally, we determine a distance from Fornax’s horizontal branch (HB) and two galactic globular cluster calibrators, giving mag. These distances are each derived from homogeneous IMACS photometry, are anchored to independent geometric zero-points, and utilize different classes of stars. We therefore average over independent uncertainties and report the combined distance modulus 〈μ 0〉 =20.770 ± 0.042stat ± 0.024sys mag (corresponding to a distance of 143 ± 3 kpc).

An extended stellar halo discovered in the Fornax dwarf spheroidal using Gaia EDR3

ABSTRACT We have studied the extent of the Red Giant Branch stellar population in the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy using the spatially extended and homogeneous data set from Gaia EDR3. Our pre-selection of stars belonging to Fornax is based on their proper motions, parallaxes, and colour–magnitude diagram. The latter criteria provide a Fornax star sample, which we further restrict by colour and magnitude to eliminate contaminations due to either Milky Way stars or QSOs. The precision of the data has been sufficient to reach extremely small contaminations (0.02–0.3 per cent), allowing us to reach to a background level 12 magnitudes deeper than the central surface brightness of Fornax. We discover a break in the density profile, which reveals the presence of an additional component that extents 2.1 degree in radius, i.e. 5.4 kpc, and almost seven times the half-light radius of Fornax. The extended new component represents 10 per cent of the stellar mass of Fornax, and behaves like an extended halo. The absence of tidally elongated features at such an unprecedented depth (equivalent to 37.94 ± 0.16 mag arcsec−2 in V-band) rules out a possible role of tidal stripping. We instead suggest that Fornax is likely at first infall, and has lost its gas very recently, which consequently leads to a lack of gravity implying that residual stars have spherically expanded to form the newly discovered stellar halo of Fornax.

ACTINIUM ABUNDANCES IN STELLAR ATMOSPHERES

This paper presents a study of radioactive actinium in the atmospheres of stars located in galaxies with different chemical evolution history – namely, Przybylski's Star (HD 101065) in the Milky Way and the red supergiant PMMR27 in the Small Magellanic Cloud; it also reports the findings of the previous research of the red supergiant RM 1-667 in the Large Magellanic Cloud and the red giant BL138 in the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy. The actinium abundance is close to that of uranium in the atmospheres of certain stars in the Milky Way’s halo and in the atmosphere of Arcturus. The following actinium abundances have been obtained (in a scale of lg N(H) = 12): for the red supergiants PMMR27 and RM 1- 667 lg N(Ac) = -1.7 and lg N(Ac) = -1.3, respectively, and for the red giant BL138 lg N(Ac) = -1.6. The actinium abundance in the atmosphere of Przybylski's Star (HD 101065) is lg N(Ac) = `0.94±0.09, which is more than two orders of magnitude higher than those in the atmospheres of the other studied stars.

Spectroscopic Confirmation of the Sixth Globular Cluster in the Fornax Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy*

Abstract The Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy has an anomalous number of globular clusters, five, for its stellar mass. There is a longstanding debate about a potential sixth globular cluster (Fornax 6) that has recently been “rediscovered” in DECam imaging. We present new Magellan/M2FS spectroscopy of the Fornax 6 cluster and Fornax dSph. Combined with literature data we identify ∼15–17 members of the Fornax 6 cluster, showing that this overdensity is indeed a star cluster and associated with the Fornax dSph. The cluster is significantly more metal-rich (mean metallicity of [ Fe / H ] ¯ = −0.71 ± 0.05) than the other five Fornax globular clusters (−2.5 < [Fe/H] < −1.4) and more metal-rich than the bulk of Fornax. We measure a velocity dispersion of 5.6 − 1.6 + 2.0 km s − 1 corresponding to an anomalously high mass-to-light of 15 < M/L < 258 at 90% confidence when calculated assuming equilibrium. Two stars inflate this dispersion and may be either Fornax field stars or as yet unresolved binary stars. Alternatively, the Fornax 6 cluster may be undergoing tidal disruption. Based on its metal-rich nature, the Fornax 6 cluster is likely younger than the other Fornax clusters, with an estimated age of ∼2 Gyr when compared to stellar isochrones. The chemodynamics and star formation history of Fornax shows imprints of major events such as infall into the Milky Way, multiple pericenter passages, star formation bursts, and/or potential mergers or interactions. Any of these events may have triggered the formation of the Fornax 6 cluster.

The tidal evolution of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal and its globular clusters

ABSTRACT The dark matter content of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy inferred from its kinematics is substantially lower than expected from LCDM cosmological simulations. We use N-body simulations to examine whether this may be the result of Galactic tides. We find that, despite improved proper motions from the Gaia mission, the pericentric distance of Fornax remains poorly constrained, mainly because its largest velocity component is roughly antiparallel to the solar motion. Translating Fornax’s proper motion into a Galactocentric velocity is, thus, sensitively dependent on Fornax’s assumed distance: the observed distance uncertainty, $\pm 8\,{{\rm per\,cent}}$, implies pericentric distances that vary between rperi ∼ 50 and ∼150 kpc. Our simulations show that for rperi in the lower range of that estimate, an LCDM subhalo with maximum circular velocity Vmax = 40 km s−1 (or virial mass $M_{200}\approx 10^{10}\, \rm M_\odot$, as expected from LCDM) would be tidally stripped to Vmax ∼ 23 km s−1 over 10 Gyr. This would reduce the dark mass within the Fornax stellar half-mass radius to about half its initial value, bringing it into agreement with observations. Tidal stripping affects mainly Fornax’s dark matter halo; its stellar component is affected little, losing less than $5\,{{\rm per\,cent}}$ of its initial mass in the process. We also explore the effect of Galactic tides on the dynamical friction decay times of Fornax’s population of globular clusters (GCs) and find little evidence for substantial changes, compared with models run in isolation. A population of GCs with initial orbital radii between 1 and 2 kpc is consistent with the present-day spatial distribution of Fornax GCs, despite assuming a cuspy halo. Neither the dark matter content nor the spatial distribution of GCs of Fornax seems inconsistent with a simple model where Fornax inhabits a tidally stripped cuspy cold dark matter halo.

Assessing the Fornax globular cluster timing problem in different models of dark matter

We investigate what the orbits of globular clusters (GCs) in the Fornax dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy can teach us about dark matter (DM). This problem was recently studied for ultralight dark matter (ULDM). We consider two additional models: (i) fermionic degenerate dark matter (DDM), where Pauli blocking should be taken into account in the dynamical friction computation; and (ii) self-interacting dark matter (SIDM). We give a simple and direct Fokker-Planck derivation of dynamical friction, new in the case of DDM and reproducing previous results in the literature for ULDM and cold DM. ULDM, DDM and SIDM were considered in the past as leading to cores in dSphs, a feature that acts to suppress dynamical friction and prolong GC orbits. For DDM we derive a version of the cosmological free streaming limit that is independent of the DM production mechanism, finding that DDM cannot produce an appreciable core in Fornax without violating Ly-$\ensuremath{\alpha}$ limits. If the Ly-$\ensuremath{\alpha}$ limit is discounted for some reason, then stellar kinematics data does allow a DDM core which could prolong GC orbits. For SIDM we find that significant prolongation of GC orbits could be obtained for values of the self-interaction cross section considered in previous works. In addition to reassessing the inspiral time using updated observational data, we give a new perspective on the so-called GC timing problem, demonstrating that for a cuspy cold DM profile dynamical friction predicts a $z=0$ radial distribution for the innermost GCs that is independent of initial conditions. The observed orbits of Fornax GCs are consistent with this expectation with a mild apparent fine-tuning at the level of $\ensuremath{\sim}25%$.

Dynamical friction in Bose-Einstein condensed self-interacting dark matter at finite temperatures, and the Fornax dwarf spheroidal

Aims. The aim of the present work is to better understand the gravitational drag forces, also referred to as dynamical friction, acting on massive objects moving through a self-interacting Bose-Einstein condensate, also known as a superfluid, at finite temperatures. This is relevant for models of dark matter consisting of light scalar particles with weak self-interactions that require nonzero temperatures, or that have been heated inside galaxies. Methods. We derived expressions for dynamical friction using linear perturbation theory, and compared these to numerical simulations in which nonlinear effects are included. After testing the linear result, it was applied to the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy, and two of its gravitationally bound globular clusters. Dwarf spheroidals are well-suited for indirectly probing properties of dark matter, and so by estimating the rate at which these globular clusters are expected to sink into their host halo due to dynamical friction, we inferred limits on the superfluid dark matter parameter space. Results. The dynamical friction in a finite-temperature superfluid is found to behave very similarly to the zero-temperature limit, even when the thermal contributions are large. However, when a critical velocity for the superfluid flow is included, the friction force can transition from the zero-temperature value to the value in a conventional thermal fluid. Increasing the mass of the perturbing object induces a similar transition to when lowering the critical velocity. When applied to two of Fornax’s globular clusters, we find that the parameter space preferred in the literature for a zero-temperature superfluid yields decay times that are in agreement with observations. However, the present work suggests that increasing the temperature, which is expected to change the preferred parameter space, may lead to very small decay times, and therefore pose a problem for finite-temperature superfluid models of dark matter.

N-body Self-consistent Stellar-halo Modeling of the Fornax Dwarf Galaxy

Abstract We present nearly self-consistent stellar-halo models of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy associated with the Milky Way galaxy. Such galaxies are dominated by dark matter and have almost no gas in the system. Therefore, they are excellent objects for N-body modeling that takes into account visible and dark matter halo components. In order to model the dark matter halo inferred from the analysis of the measured velocities of Fornax's stars, we constructed several self-consistent quasi-equilibrium models based on two source code sets. One of them (GalactICS Software, NEMO) deals with the self-consistent distribution function modeling that depends on the energy E and vertical component of the angular momentum L z . The other is included in the AGAMA framework and is based on Schwarzschild's calculation of orbits. It can reproduce the nonspherical self-consistent structure of Fornax as the weighted sum of orbit contributions to the galactic density even though the inferred dark halo parameters come from Jeans analysis, which does not require that any distribution functions be positive. To guess the parameters that make the N-body models close to the visible object, we use the stellar dark matter model of the Fornax galaxy based on hydrodynamic axisymmetric Jeans equations taking into account the velocity anisotropy parameter. Then, we studied the evolution of the models by performing N-body simulations with the falcON code in order to test their stability. The variability of the model parameters over time was obtained during simulations. The AGAMA models show the best agreement of the resulting velocity dispersion profiles with the observed data.

The bursty star formation history of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy revealed with the HST

ABSTRACT We present a new derivation of the star formation history (SFH) of the dSph galaxy Fornax in two central regions, characterized by unprecedented precision and age resolution. It reveals that star formation has proceeded in sharp bursts separated by periods of low level or quiescent activity. The SFH was derived through colour–magnitude diagram (CMD) fitting of two extremely deep Hubble Space Telescope CMDs, sampling the centre and one core radius. The attained age resolution allowed us to single out a major star formation episode at early times, a second strong burst 4.6 ± 0.4 Gyr ago and recent intermittent episodes ∼2–0.2 Gyr ago. Detailed testing with mock stellar populations was used to estimate the duration of the main bursts and study the occurrence of low-level star formation between them. The SFHs in both regions show common features, with activity at the same epochs and similar age–metallicity relationship. However, clear indications of a spatial gradient were also found, with mean age increasing with radius and star formation episodes being more prolonged in the centre. While some galaxy evolution models predict bursty SFHs in dwarf galaxies and thus a secular origin of the observed SFH cannot be excluded in Fornax, other evidence points to possible mergers or interactions as the cause of its bursty SFH. In particular, we calculated the Fornax orbit relative to the closest dwarfs and the Milky Way and observed a correspondence between the main intermediate-age and young events and peri-passages of Fornax around the Milky Way, possibly indicating tidally induced star formation.

Near-Gaussian distributions for modelling discrete stellar velocity data with heteroskedastic uncertainties

ABSTRACT The velocity distributions of stellar tracers in general exhibit weak non-Gaussianity encoding information on the orbital composition of a galaxy and the underlying potential. The standard solution for measuring non-Gaussianity involves constructing a series expansion (e.g. the Gauss–Hermite series) that can produce regions of negative probability density. This is a significant issue for the modelling of discrete data with heteroskedastic uncertainties. Here, we introduce a method to construct positive-definite probability distributions by the convolution of a given kernel with a Gaussian distribution. Further convolutions by observational uncertainties are trivial. The statistics (moments and cumulants) of the resulting distributions are governed by the kernel distribution. Two kernels (uniform and Laplace) offer simple drop-in replacements for a Gauss–Hermite series for negative and positive excess kurtosis distributions with the option of skewness. We demonstrate the power of our method by an application to real and mock line-of-sight velocity data sets on dwarf spheroidal galaxies, where kurtosis is indicative of orbital anisotropy and hence a route to breaking the mass–anisotropy degeneracy for the identification of cusped versus cored dark matter profiles. Data on the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy indicate positive excess kurtosis and hence favour a cored dark matter profile. Although designed for discrete data, the analytic Fourier transforms of the new models also make them appropriate for spectral fitting, which could improve the fits of high-quality data by avoiding unphysical negative wings in the line-of-sight velocity distribution.

Is Fornax 4 the nuclear star cluster of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy?

ABSTRACT Fornax 4 is the most distinctive globular cluster in the Fornax dwarf spheroidal. Located close to the centre of the galaxy, more metal-rich and potentially younger than its four companions (namely, Fornax clusters number 1, 2, 3, and 5), it has been suggested to have experienced a different formation than the other clusters in the galaxy. Here, we use Hubble Space Telescope/WFC3 photometry to characterize the stellar population content of this system and shed new light on its nature. By means of a detailed comparison of synthetic horizontal branch and red giant branch with the observed colour–magnitude diagrams, we find that this system likely hosts stellar sub-populations characterized by a significant iron spread up to Δ[Fe/H] ∼ 0.4 dex and possibly by also some degree of He abundance variations ΔY ∼ 0.03. We argue that this purely observational evidence, combined with the other peculiarities characterizing this system, supports the possibility that Fornax 4 is the nuclear star cluster of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy. A spectroscopic follow-up for a large number of resolved member stars is needed to confirm this interesting result and to study in detail the formation and early evolution of this system and more in general the process of galaxy nucleation.

A dwarf–dwarf merger and dark matter core as a solution to the globular cluster problems in the Fornax dSph

ABSTRACT The five globular clusters (GCs) of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy are puzzling for two reasons; the mass in GCs is high with respect to the galaxy’s old stellar mass and their survival and large distance (>1 kpc) is at odds with naive expectations of dynamical friction. We present here a semi-analytic model, simultaneously addressing both problems in a comprehensive evolutionary framework for Fornax. Key to the model is inclusion of: (1) hydrodynamical constraints on the GC formation locations, (2) self-consistent velocity distribution functions in the dynamical friction calculations, and (3) expansion of GC orbits due to a past dwarf–dwarf merger in the orbit integrations. The latter is crucial for reconciling the dynamical survival of the clusters and their chemical properties with respect to the Fornax field stars. We find that in order for four of the GCs to survive at their observed projected location, a dark matter core of size rc > 1.5 kpc and a dwarf merger with dynamical mass ratio of 1:5 ≤ η ≤ 1:2 with Fornax is required. We support the merger scenario by showing that aspects of the field star metallicity distribution function and anomalous chemical properties of GC5, are representative of a merging galaxy which is ∼1/3 less massive than Fornax. Together the chemical and dynamical models suggest a scenario where three in situ GCs in proto-Fornax were ejected to the outskirts during the merger, a GC4 formed during the merger at about 10 Gyr ago, with GC5 being brought in by the merging galaxy to Fornax.

Neutron-capture elements in dwarf galaxies

The heavy elements (Z > 30) are created in neutron (n)-capture processes that are predicted to happen at vastly different nucleosynthetic sites. To study these processes in an environment different from the Milky Way, we targeted the n-capture elements in red giant branch stars in the Sculptor dwarf spheroidal galaxy. Using ESO VLT/FLAMES spectra, we measured the chemical abundances of Y, Ba, La, Nd, and Eu in 98 stars covering the metalliticy range −2.4 < [Fe/H] < −0.9. This is the first paper in a series about the n-capture elements in dwarf galaxies, and here we focus on the relative and absolute timescales of the slow (s)- and rapid (r)-processes in Sculptor. From the abundances of the s-process element Ba and the r-process element Eu, it is clear that the r-process enrichment occurred throughout the entire chemical evolution history of Sculptor. Furthermore, there is no evidence for the r-process to be significantly delayed in time relative to core-collapse supernovae. Neutron star mergers are therefore unlikely the dominant (or only) nucleosynthetic site of the r-process. However, the products of the s-process only become apparent at [Fe/H] ≈ −2 in Sculptor, and the s-process becomes the dominant source of Ba at [Fe/H] ≳ −2. We tested the use of [Y/Mg] and [Ba/Mg] as chemical clocks in Sculptor. Similarly to what is observed in the Milky Way, [Y/Mg] and [Ba/Mg] increase towards younger ages. However, there is an offset in the trends, where the abundance ratios of [Y/Mg] in Sculptor are significantly lower than those of the Milky Way at any given age. This is most likely caused by metallicity dependence of yields from the s-process, as well as by a different relative contribution of the s-process to core-collapse supernovae in these galaxies. Comparisons of our results with data of the Milky Way and the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy furthermore show that these chemical clocks depend on both metallicity and environment.

The Morphology and Structure of Stellar Populations in the Fornax Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy from Dark Energy Survey Data

Using deep wide-field photometry three-year data (Y3) from the Dark Energy Survey (DES), we present a panoramic study of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy. The data presented here -- a small subset of the full survey -- uniformly covers a region of 25 square degrees centered on the galaxy to a depth of g ~ 23.5. We use this data to study the structural properties of Fornax, overall stellar population, and its member stars in different evolutionary phases. We also search for possible signs of tidal disturbance. Fornax is found to be significantly more spatially extended than what early studies suggested. No statistically significant distortions or signs of tidal disturbances were found down to a surface brightness limit of ~32.1 mag/arcsec^2. However, there are hints of shell-like features located ~30' - 40' from the center of Fornax that may be stellar debris from past merger events. We also find that intermediate age and young main-sequence populations show different orientation at the galaxy center and have many substructures. The deep DES Y3 data allows us to characterize the age of those substructures with great accuracy, both those previously known and those newly discovered in this work, on the basis of their color-magnitude diagram morphology. We find that the youngest overdensities are all found on the Eastern side of Fornax, where the Fornax field population itself is slightly younger than in the West. The high quality DES Y3 data reveals that Fornax has many rich structures, and provides insights into its complex formation history.

Action-based models for dwarf spheroidal galaxies and globular clusters

ABSTRACTA new family of self-consistent distribution function (DF)-based models of stellar systems is explored. The stellar component of the models is described by a DF depending on the action integrals, previously used to model the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy (dSph). The stellar component may cohabit with either a dark halo, also described by a DF, or with a massive central black hole. In all cases we solve for the models self-consistent potential. Focussing on spherically symmetric models, we show how the stellar observables vary with the anisotropy prescribed by the DF, with the dominance and nature of the dark halo, and with the mass of the black hole. We show that precise fits to the observed surface brightness profiles of four globular clusters can be obtained for a wide range of prescribed velocity anisotropies. We also obtain precise fits to the observed projected densities of four dSphs. Finally, we present a three-component model of the Sculptor dSph with distinct DFs for the red and blue horizontal branch stars and the dark matter halo.

Rediscovery of the Sixth Star Cluster in the Fornax Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy

Since first noticed by Shapley in 1939, a faint object coincident with the Fornax dwarf spheroidal has long been discussed as a possible sixth globular cluster system. However, debate has continued over whether this overdensity is a statistical artifact or a blended galaxy group. In this Letter we demonstrate, using deep DECam imaging data, that this object is well resolved into stars and is a bona fide star cluster. The stellar overdensity of this cluster is statistically significant at the level of ~ 6 - 6.7 sigma in several different photometric catalogs including Gaia. Therefore, it is highly unlikely to be caused by random fluctuation. We show that Fornax 6 is a star cluster with a peculiarly low surface brightness and irregular shape, which may indicate a strong tidal influence from its host galaxy. The Hess diagram of Fornax 6 is largely consistent with that of Fornax field stars, but it appears to be slightly bluer. However, it is still likely more metal-rich than most of the globular clusters in the system. Faint clusters like Fornax 6 that orbit and potentially get disrupted in the centers of dwarf galaxies can prove crucial for constraining the dark matter distribution in Milky Way satellites.

Schwarzschild dynamical model of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy

We present a full dynamical model of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy obtained with the spherically symmetric Schwarzschild orbit superposition method applied to the largest kinematic data set presently available. We modelled the total mass content of the dwarf with the mass-to-light ratio $\Upsilon$ varying with radius and found that Fornax is with high probability embedded in a massive and extended dark matter halo. We estimated the total mass contained within 1$\,$kpc to be $M(<1\,$kpc$)=1.25^{+0.06}_{-0.13} \times 10^8\,$M$_{\odot}$. The data are consistent with the constant mass-to-light ratio, i.e. the mass-follows-light model, only at 3$\sigma$ level, but still require a high value of $\Upsilon \approx 11.2\,$M$_{\odot}/$L$_{\odot}$. Our results are in general agreement with previous estimates of the dynamical mass profile of Fornax. As the Schwarzschild method does not require any assumptions on the orbital anisotropy of the stars, we obtained a profile of the anisotropy parameter $\beta$ as an output of our modelling. The derived anisotropy is close to zero in the centre of the galaxy and decreases with radius, but remains consistent with isotropic orbits at all radii at 1$\sigma$ confidence level.
