Shale pore characteristics and their impact on the gas-bearing properties of the Longmaxi Formation in the Luzhou area

Deep shale has the characteristics of large burial depth, rapid changes in reservoir properties, complex pore types and structures, and unstable production. The whole-rock X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, reservoir physical property parameter testing, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis, high-pressure mercury intrusion testing, CO2 adsorption experimentation, and low-temperature nitrogen adsorption–desorption testing were performed to study the pore structure characteristics of marine shale reservoirs in the southern Sichuan Basin. The results show that the deep shale of the Wufeng Formation Longyi1 sub-member in the Luzhou area is superior to that of the Weiyuan area in terms of factors controlling shale gas enrichment, such as organic matter abundance, physical properties, gas-bearing properties, and shale reservoir thickness. SEM is utilized to identify six types of pores (mainly organic matter pores). The porosities of the pyrobitumen pores reach 21.04–31.65%, while the porosities of the solid kerogen pores, siliceous mineral dissolution pores, and carbonate dissolution pores are low at 0.48–1.80%. The pores of shale reservoirs are mainly micropores and mesopores, with a small amount of macropores. The total pore volume ranges from 22.0 to 36.40 μL/g, with an average of 27.46 μL/g, the total pore specific surface area ranges from 34.27 to 50.39 m2/g, with an average of 41.12 m2/g. The pore volume and specific surface area of deep shale gas are positively correlated with TOC content, siliceous minerals, and clay minerals. The key period for shale gas enrichment, which matches the evolution process of shale hydrocarbon generation, reservoir capacity, and direct and indirect cap rocks, is from the Middle to Late Triassic to the present. Areas with late structural uplift, small uplift amplitude, and high formation pressure coefficient characteristics favor preserving shale gas with high gas content and production levels.

The Relationship between the Time Difference of Formation Water Infiltration Rate, Tectonic Movement, and the Formation Pressure Coefficient

The study of formation pressure holds great significance for both exploration and development. The formation pressure coefficient is a crucial parameter in geology, encompassing various aspects. Numerous models exist to explore its influencing factors, yet they remain highly controversial. Our research has gathered data on formation pressure states and tectonic movement rates from dozens of large sedimentary basins worldwide. We delved into the patterns of formation pressure changes during basin deposition, subsidence, and tectonic uplift, taking into account the permeability of formation water. The findings reveal that during the Neogene and beyond, rapid deposition or tectonic uplift can cause the infiltration of formation water to lag behind tectonic movements, resulting in overpressure. Conversely, if recent tectonic movements are slow, formation water will complete its infiltration process ahead of tectonic changes, bringing the formation pressure to a hydrostatic state. Consequently, we have concluded that abnormal formation pressure primarily depends on the rate of tectonic movements during the Neogene and Quaternary periods. This study also proposes four formation pressure models, paving the way for a comprehensive understanding of formation pressure within a unified theoretical framework.

The effect of structural preservation conditions on pore structure of marine shale reservoir: a case study of the Wufeng-Longmaxi Formation shale, Southern Sichuan Basin, China

The marine shale within the Sichuan Basin constitutes China’s significant shale gas production, featuring old formation age, high degree of thermal evolution, multiple tectonic movements, and complex structural conditions. However, there are significant differences in the shale gas preservation conditions and reservoir quality in different areas, limiting future large-scale exploration and development. Pore structure significantly influences shale reservoir quality, gas content, and exploration of shale gas occurrence, migration, and enrichment mechanisms. The influence of structural-dominated preservation conditions on shale pore structures is essential to comprehend for effective shale gas exploitation. This study employs field-emission scanning electron microscopy in conjunction with other techniques (low-temperature N2 adsorption, low-temperature CO2 adsorption, and nuclear magnetic resonance) for detailed analyses of the pore structure across varied structural zones, revealing the influence of structural attributes, fault systems, depth of burial, and formation pressure on pore architecture, and examining the relationship between pore structure and shale gas preservation conditions. The results show that stable structural condition is conducive to the development and preservation of shale pores. Structural compression causes inorganic and organic pores to become narrow and elongated due to shrinkage, with a significant increase in microfractures. The porosity of shale with stable structural conditions exhibits markedly increased porosity compared to samples under structural compressions. Under conditions of similar TOC and mineral composition, the pore size distribution (PSD), pore volume (PV), and specific surface area (SSA) of shale after structural compression are significantly lower than those of samples with stable structural conditions. As the burial depth increases, the shale porosity shows a decreasing trend, but the decrease is limited. Burial depth significantly impacts the SSA and PV of high-TOC samples (3%–6%). As the burial depth increases, both SSA and PV show a significant decreasing trend. When the burial depth reaches 4000 m, SSA and PV tend to concentrate. The formation pressure coefficient is an important factor for the development and preservation of shale pores, and porosity is positively correlated with the formation pressure coefficient. Increased formation pressure coefficient indicates superior preservation conditions and enhanced pore development.

Enlightenment of calcite veins in deep Ordovician Wufeng–Silurian Longmaxi shales fractures to migration and enrichment of shale gas in southern Sichuan Basin, SW China

The relationship between fracture calcite veins and shale gas enrichment in the deep Ordovician Wufeng Formation–Silurian Longmaxi Formation (Wufeng–Longmaxi) shales in southern Sichuan Basin was investigated through core and thin section observations, cathodoluminescence analysis, isotopic geochemistry analysis, fluid inclusion testing, and basin simulation. Tectonic fracture calcite veins mainly in the undulating part of the structure and non-tectonic fracture calcite veins are mainly formed in the gentle part of the structure. The latter, mainly induced by hydrocarbon generation, occurred at the stage of peak oil and gas generation, while the former turned up with the formation of Luzhou paleouplift during the Indosinian. Under the influence of hydrocarbon generation pressurization process, fractures were opened and closed frequently, and oil and gas episodic activities are recorded by veins. The formation pressure coefficient at the maximum paleodepth exceeds 2.0. The formation uplift stage after the Late Yanshanian is the key period for shale gas migration. Shale gas migrates along the bedding to the high part of the structure. The greater the structural fluctuation is, the more intense the shale gas migration activity is, and the loss is more. The gentler the formation is, the weaker the shale gas migration activity is, and the loss is less. The shale gas enrichment in the core of gentle anticlines and gentle synclines is relatively higher.

Accumulation and exploration enlightenment of shallow normal-pressure shale gas in southeastern Sichuan Basin, SW China

Based on the drilling, logging, experimental and testing data of Well PD1, a shallow normal-pressure shale gas well in the Laochangping anticline in southeastern Sichuan Basin, the shallow shale gas reservoirs of the Ordovician Wufeng Formation to Silurian Longmaxi Formation (Wufeng–Longmaxi) were investigated in terms of geological characteristics, occurrence mechanism, and adsorption-desorption characteristics, to reveal the enrichment laws and high-yield mechanism of shallow normal-pressure shale gas in complex structure areas. First, the shallow shale gas reservoirs are similar to the medium–deep shale gas reservoirs in static indicators such as high-quality shale thickness, geochemistry, physical properties and mineral composition, but the former is geologically characterized by low formation pressure coefficient, low gas content, high proportion of adsorbed gas, low in-situ stress, and big difference between principal stresses. Second, shallow shales in the complex structure areas have the gas occurrence characteristics including low total gas content (1.1–4.8 m3/t), high adsorbed gas content (2.5–2.8 m3/t), low sensitive desorption pressure (1.7–2.5 MPa), and good self-sealing. Third, the adsorbed gas enrichment of shales is mainly controlled by organic matter abundance, formation temperature and formation pressure: the higher the organic matter abundance and formation pressure, the lower the formation temperature and the higher the adsorption capacity, which is more beneficial for the adsorbed gas occurrence. Fourth, the shallow normal-pressure shale gas corresponds to low sensitive desorption pressure. The adsorbed gas can be rapidly desorbed and recovered when the flowing pressure is reduced below the sensitive desorption pressure. Fifth, the exploration breakthrough of Well PD1 demonstrates that the shallow complex structure areas with adsorbed gas in dominance can form large-scale shale reservoirs, and confirms the good exploration potential of shallow normal-pressure shale gas in the margin of the Sichuan Basin.

Development technologies for Triassic Chang 7 shale oil in Ordos Basin: A case study of Qingcheng Oilfield, NW China

The reservoirs in the seventh member of the Triassic Yanchang Formation (Chang 7 Member) in the Qingcheng Oilfield of the Ordos Basin are characterized by thin sandbody, tight rocks, high heterogeneity, low formation pressure coefficient, and complex geomorphology. Through the efforts in the stages of exploration, appraisal, pilot testing and development, a series of key technologies have been formed, including “sweet spot” optimization, differentiated three-dimensional well deployment, fast drilling and completion of large-cluster horizontal well, intensively-staged volume fracturing in long horizontal well, and optimization of rational production system. Furthermore, a production organization mode represented by factory-like operations on loess platform has been implemented. Application of these technologies has enabled to significantly improve the single-well production of the Qingcheng Oilfield, reduce the investment cost, and realize a large-scale and beneficial development at a full cost below $55 per barrel. In 2022, the annual production of Chang 7 shale oil in the Ordos Basin reached 221×104 t, accounting for 70% of the annual shale oil production of China. The practice of development technologies in the Qingcheng Oilfield provides valuable references for efficient development of continental shale oil.

Prediction of formation pressure based on numerical simulation of in-situ stress field: a case study of the Longmaxi formation shale in the Nanchuan area, eastern Chongqing, China

The in-situ stress and formation pressure are important parameters in shale gas development. They directly affect the well wall stability, the direction of horizontal well drilling, and the fracturing effect during the shale gas development process. There are abundant shale gas resources in the southeastern Chongqing-Sichuan area, but the structure in the area is complex, and it is difficult to predict the in-situ stress and formation pressure. Therefore, in this paper, a finite element simulation model was established based on a large number of seismic, logging, and experimental rock mechanics data and the prediction accuracy of the stress field simulation was effectively improved. The construction of the stress field was based on the combined spring model, as well as the data related to the measured in-situ stress and the formation pressure obtained during drilling. The coupling relationship between the in-situ stress, the formation strain, and the formation pressure were derived to carry out the prediction of the distributions of the formation pressure and the formation pressure coefficient. The prediction results showed that the present-day maximum principal stress direction in the study area was about NE65°–110°, and the present-day maximum principal stress was 56.12–93.79 MPa. The present-day minimum principal stress direction was about NE335°–20°, and the present-day minimum principal stress was 48.06–71.67 MPa. The formation pressure was 2.8–88.25 MPa, and the formation pressure coefficient was 0.74–1.55. The formation pressure distribution was greatly affected by fault, tectonic location, in-situ stress and rock petrophysical properties, and the overpressure areas of the formation were distributed in the synclines and the deeply buried areas. This study shows that the finite element based formation pressure prediction method is effective.

Lower limit of effective reservoir physical properties and controlling factors of medium-deep clastic reservoirs: a case study of the Dawangzhuang area in Raoyang sag, Bohai Bay Basin

With the continuous improvement of oil and gas exploration in the middle and shallow layers, the deep Paleogene in Raoyang sag has become an important exploration field of “increasing reserves and production” in North China. The recognition and control factors of deep effective reservoirs are unclear, which restricts the recognition effect of oil and gas exploration. The key to identify effective reservoirs is to determine the lower limit standard of reservoir physical properties. The single method for calculating the lower limit of physical properties has limitations. The lower limit of the effective reservoir physical properties of the Shahejie Formation in the Dawangzhuang area was obtained by comprehensively using physical property, well logging and oil test data. The data were analysed by oil testing method, metre oil production index test method and frequency curve intersection method. On this basis, combined with the cast thin-section observations, scanning electron microscopy and other test results, the comprehensive control of effective reservoir development of the Shahejie Formation in the Dawangzhuang area of the Raoyang sag was studied from various factors, such as formation pressure, sand body thickness and diagenesis. The results show that the lower limit of porosity was 9.73, 9.44 and 8.85% at depths of Es1, Es2 and Es3, respectively. The lower limit of permeability was 1.21 × 10–3, 1.18 × 10–3 and 0.59 × 10–3 μm2, respectively. Effective reservoirs are easier to form in areas with formation pressure coefficient greater than 1.2. Formation overpressure inhibits compaction and promotes dissolution. The proportion of effective reservoirs of sand bodies with thicknesses greater than 2 m can reach more than 75%. The influence of diagenesis on the reservoir is mainly manifested in compaction and cementation making the reservoir compact. The porosity reduction rate caused by compaction can reach 20–75%, while dissolution makes the reservoir form secondary pores. The average pore throat radius of secondary pores can reach 4 ~ 6.3 µm. This study makes use of the applicability of different methods, which is more instructive for predicting the effective reservoir of the Shahejie Formation in the study area. In addition, the research results provide a reference for the development mechanism of medium-deep clastic reservoirs.

Carbon Isotope Fractionation Characteristics of Normally Pressured Shale Gas from the Southeastern Margin of the Sichuan Basin; Insights into Shale Gas Storage Mechanisms

Since the development of shale gas in the Wufeng-Longmaxi Formation in the Sichuan Basin, China's shale gas production and reserves have increased rapidly. The southeastern margin of the Sichuan Basin is located in a normally pressured transition zone, where single well gas production varies greatly under complex geological structures. In order to reveal the shale gas enrichment mechanism and favorable shale gas regions, shale gas samples from production wells were collected from different structures, with the formation pressure coefficient ranging between 0.98 and 1.35. The gas components and carbon isotope characteristics of normally pressured shale gas were investigated. The carbon isotope characteristics of the Wufeng-Longmaxi shale gas from the basin scale was mainly controlled using thermal maturity; as the thermal maturity increased, heavier carbon isotopes were found, in addition to drier shale gas. For normally pressured shale gas, the composition of δ13C1 and δ13C2 becomes heavier, and the dryness coefficient decreases with the decreasing pressure coefficient; this is not consistent with the results from thermal evolution. By comparing possible influencing factors, it is evident that the change in geological structure destroys the original shale gas reservoir, which leads to the escape of some gases, and it may be the main factor that contributes to the gas geochemical characteristics of the normally pressured shale gas. Compared with the geological parameters of the shale samples, such as mineral composition, organic abundance, organic pore distribution, and gas content, the carbon isotope characteristics of normally pressured shale gas show a higher efficiency, thus indicating favorable sweet spot evaluations for shale gas in the studied areas.

High-Density Solid-Free Flexible Microgel Fluid Loss Pill in High-Temperature and High-Pressure Reservoirs: Curing Mechanism and Working Performance

Summary The exploration of a multipressure well is often faced with the problem of blowout and loss of circulation coexisting. Using a high-density temporary plugging agent to plug the lower layer is an effective method to ensure the normal circulation of the upper kill fluid and realize the safe and efficient development of the reservoir. In a previous study, we reported a solid-free flexible colloidal completion fluid (SFCCF; Jia et al. 2022b). In this paper, an ultrahigh-temperature (180°C)-resistant, curable solid-free flexible microgel pill (SFMP) with variable density was prepared based on SFCCF. SFMP is mainly composed of flexible microgel absorbent copolymer material (abbreviated as KA01), and the water absorption law follows Flory’s elastic gel theory. SFMP breaks through the upper density limit of traditional solid-free brine-weighted polymer gels, and its curing density is up to 1.8 g/cm3. The strength of SFMP was increased by crosslinking the stabilizer with KA01 through an acylation reaction. In addition, the hydrogen bonding between stabilizer and phosphate and the phosphorylation between phosphate and KA01 jointly promoted the curing of SFMP. The curing of SFMP is the manifestation of a multistage reaction, and the internal reaction rate increased with the increase in heating rate. SFMP has good performance of dynamic temporary plugging and pressure bearing and can be completely degraded by the chemical breaker. The formation pressure coefficients of the multipressure well in the East China Sea range from 1.20 to 1.42. The SFMP with 1.5 g/cm3 was used to plug the lower perforation layer of the Well AX, which achieved a reservoir protection effect. After the flowback of SFMP, the Well AX met production allocation requirements. The developed SMFP provides a new way for downhole operation in high-temperature, high-pressure (HTHP) multipressure wells.

Stimulation mechanism and model establishment of enhanced imbibition oil recovery for A nano fracturing fluid

Chang 7 shale reservoir of Ordos Basin has characteristics of low porosity, ultra-low permeability, and low formation pressure coefficient. After hydraulic fracturing, the production of shale oil declines rapidly, and it has no solutions to replenish the formation energy. Currently, a nano variable-viscosity slickwater (named: NSI) is being used in the field for fracturing production. Compared with conventional fracturing fluid systems, the NSI system can increase production of oil wells by more than 4 times, and its economic benefits are very remarkable. The lab experiment shows that NSI system after the gel breaking has ability of enhanced imbibition oil recovery (EIOR), which may be an important stimulation mechanism of the NSI system. However, the contribution of EIOR to oil production is still unclear, and the corresponding mechanism and model are still lacking. Therefore, the fracturing parameters of Changqing Chang 7 reservoir were firstly optimized without considering the imbibition, and two wells were used to carry out field experiments with NSI and conventional slickwater. Then, commercial software is used to predict oil production. It was found that the actual production was higher than the predicted production. To explain this phenomenon, the effect of imbibition on enhanced oil recovery was investigated experimentally under reservoir temperature and pressure. The NMR T2 spectrum was quantitatively analyzed to clarify the variation of oil and water distribution in different pores of core. The results showed that capillary force was dominant in the small pores of core, and small pores were the main positions of EIOR. Water film was formed in large pores, which increases the migration resistance of the liquid, and allowed gravity to play an obvious role. Finally, based on the modified Aronofsky index model, an EIOR model suitable for the Changqing Chang 7 reservoir was proposed, which achieved a better match between actual production and simulated production of horizontal wells.

 Reservoir evaluation and classification is an important content in oil and natural gas exploration and development. Reasonable and scientific evaluation of reservoirs has important guiding significance for the discovery of "sweet spots" in the later stage, the optimization of favorable areas and the optimization of fracturing stimulation measures in the later stage. , this paper evaluates and analyzes 6 engineering geological factors of reservoir rock compressibility, horizontal difference stress coefficient, reservoir interlayer stress difference, rupture pressure, closure stress and formation pressure coefficient in block S, and combines with the analysis of unimpeded flow after compression to find The favorable range value of each factor provides an important basis for the subsequent evaluation and analysis of other fracturing wells and the recommendation of fracturing process countermeasures. Based on the engineering geological factors that affect the fracturing effect, a new method for evaluating the geological quality of fracturing engineering is established, and the reservoirs with the comprehensive coefficient of fracturing engineering geological quality between 0.53 and 1 are regarded as high-quality A-level reservoirs. , the reservoirs with the comprehensive coefficient of fracturing engineering geological quality between 0.2 and 0.53 are regarded as the B-level general quality reservoirs, and the reservoirs with the comprehensive coefficient of fracturing engineering geological quality between 0 and 0.2 are regarded as the C-level poor quality reservoirs, which are selected for fracturing selection. Well selection provides an important basis.

Geological Characteristics and Controlling Factors of Deep Shale Gas Enrichment of the Wufeng-Longmaxi Formation in the Southern Sichuan Basin, China

Abstract To identify the factors controlling high-quality deep shale gas reservoirs and the exploration and development potential of the Lower Paleozoic marine shale in the Sichuan Basin, the sedimentary environment of deep shale was comprehensively analysed using core thin sections, scanning electron microscopy, gamma ray spectrometry logging, and elemental logging data. In addition, the geological conditions of deep shale gas accumulation and the effect of tectonic processes on the preservation conditions are discussed based on the experimental data of mineral composition analysis, geochemical features, and reservoir spatial characteristics. (1) The sedimentary environment changes from an anoxic water environment to an oxygen-rich oxidizing environment from bottom to top in the Wufeng-Longmaxi Formation in southern Sichuan. The deep shale gas reservoir shows overpressure and rich gas characteristics, namely, high formation pressure (2.0~2.2), high porosity (20%~55%), and high gas content (4.0~5.0 m3/t). (2) The favourable sedimentary environment has a higher hydrocarbon generation potential and deposits of rich organic matter and siliceous particles. During the hydrocarbon generation process, the rich organic matter generates a large number of organic pores and a large specific surface area, which provides the main reservoir and adsorption space for free and adsorbed shale gas. A large number of biogenic siliceous particles provide a solid rock support framework for the shale reservoir, thereby maintaining excellent reservoir physical properties. (3) Late and small stratigraphic uplifts result in a short shale gas escape time and favourable preservation conditions. Additionally, the small-scale faults and a high-angle intersection between the fracture strike and the geostress direction are conducive to the preservation of shale gas. (4) A high formation pressure coefficient, a sedimentary environment rich in organic siliceous deep-water continental shelf microfacies, and a relatively stable tectonic structure are conducive to the accumulation of deep shale gas.

Geological Characteristics of Lower Paleozoic Shale Gas Accumulation in the Yuxi Region, Southern Sichuan Basin: In View of High-Density Methane Inclusions.

Twelve shale fracture veins and forty-nine fluid inclusion assemblages within the veins of 3800–4200 m in three wells located in different tectonic zones in the Yuxi Region, southern Sichuan Basin were selected in this study. The burial and thermal histories of single wells were reconstructed, and time–temperature–pressure of oil and gas filling were clarified using microscopy observation, Raman microprobe analyses, geochemical tests, and fluid inclusion microtemperature measurement. The shale fracture veins of the Wufeng-Longmaxi Formation in the Yuxi Region are mainly formed vertically and horizontally, where the vein-forming fluids are derived from endogenous fluids. A large number of methane inclusions, bituminous inclusions, and methane-bearing bituminous inclusions within the veins confirm the process of oil cracking gas and kerogen cracking gas. The homogeneous temperature (Th) of the aqueous inclusions contemporaneous with the bituminous inclusions ranges from 109.3 to 174.1 °C, which were trapped during 220 to 250 Ma. The homogeneous temperature of the aqueous inclusions contemporaneous with the methane inclusions ranges from 137.3 to 226.8 °C, which were trapped during 160 to 195 Ma and 51 to 56 Ma. The trapped pressure calculated by high-density methane inclusions (0.246–0.293 g/cm3) is between 82.9 and 140.1 MPa, with a pressure coefficient between 1.64 and 2.07. The formation pressure coefficient is nearly two, indicating that the current overpressure is inherited from the overpressure at the maximum burial depth. The earlier the fracture vein opening, the less the damage to the shale gas accumulation, and the more opening-closing phases, the lower the homogeneous temperature of the gas–liquid two-phase aqueous inclusions coeval with the high-density methane inclusions and the greater the degree of damage to the shale gas accumulation. The results provide a basis for further study on the genesis of overpressure and the migration of shale gas.

Effects of Fracture Formation Stage on Shale Gas Preservation Conditions and Enrichment in Complex Structural Areas in the Southern Sichuan Basin, China

Fractures have significantly impacted the preservation, enrichment, and productivity of shale gas in the Longmaxi Formation in the complex structural area of the southern Sichuan Basin. Based on outcrop, core, imaging logging, inclusion analysis, acoustic emission experiments, and burial and thermal evolution history data, the formation stage, evolution and preservation conditions of structural fractures were comprehensively studied. Shear fractures are the main features of tectonic origin and are characterized by small widths, wide spacing, and high filling degrees. The structural fractures of the Longmaxi Formation can be divided into three groups in terms of their formation stage. The first-stage fractures were formed in the middle-late period of the Yanshanian tectonic movement (86.2–68.5 Ma), when the palaeotectonic stress was 68.33–71.82 MPa; and the homogenization temperature of the fluid inclusions in the corresponding fracture fillings is 150–178°C. The second-stage fractures were formed at the end of the Yanshanian -early Himalayan tectonic movement (68.5–35.2 Ma), when the palaeotectonic stress was 85.2–100.5 MPa; the homogenization temperature of the corresponding fluid inclusions is 123–148°C. The third-stage tectonic fractures formed during the middle-late period of the Himalayan tectonic movement (35.2–0 Ma), when the palaeotectonic stress was 55.6–63.8 MPa; fillings are scarce in these fractures, but the measured homogenization temperature of the corresponding fluid inclusions is 90–110°C. Shale gas preservation conditions were affected by the fracture formation stage, maximum horizontal crustal stress, fault scale, structural burial depth, formation pressure coefficient, etc. Three types of favourable preservation conditions were identified. The Type I target area is the low slope area in the middle of the syncline, which occurs more than 2.0 km from the fault. The research results have guiding significance for the evaluation of the preservation conditions of deep shale gas in the study area and similar areas.

Normal Pressure Shale Gas Preservation Conditions in the Transition Zone of the Southeast Basin Margin of Sichuan Basin

Shale in the Wufeng Formation of the upper Ordovician and Longmaxi Formation of lower Silurian in the Sichuan Basin and its surrounding area is widespread. Shale gas resources are abundant. Shale gas in the Wufeng Formation and the Longmaxi Formation in the basin has been a major breakthrough. The basin margin transition zone in southeastern Chongqing is in an intense tectonic activity area, which is more complicated and special than the stable stratum in the basin. Therefore, it is necessary to put forward higher requirements for preservation conditions and enrichment pattern evaluation of shale gas. Therefore, in view of the complicated structural pattern of the basin margin transition zone in southeastern Chongqing, the preservation conditions and reservoir forming patterns are analyzed through structural evolution, uplift and denudation, fault development, structural styles, roof and floor conditions, and formation pressure. The results show that the main reason for the formation of normal pressure is the late uplift, denudation and fault development. The pressure coefficient from the basin to the outer layer is changed from overpressure to normal pressure, and structural transformation forms the preservation form of shale gas with narrow and steep residual anticline, wide residual syncline and residual slope. The preservation condition evaluation of normal shale gas should be based on structural factors such as structural evolution, structural style, uplift and denudation degree and fault development degree, with formation pressure coefficient as reference condition, combined with material basic conditions such as roof and floor conditions and formation thickness. The findings of this study can help for better understanding of the “sweet spot” prediction of normal pressure shale gas in complex structural area.

Influence of diapir structure on formation and distribution of overpressure in the Yinggehai Basin, South China Sea

AbstractThe Yinggehai Basin (YGH) in the South China Sea is a Cenozoic, high‐temperature, and high‐pressure basin. Exploration and development of natural gas resources in the YGH show that owing to the diapir structures make the formation pressure system is complex, overpressure characteristics are obvious, prediction is difficult, and spatial distribution is irregular, which severely restricts the development of natural gas. To evaluate the influence of diapir structures on the formation and distribution of overpressure, we compared and analyzed the ancient and modern geothermal temperatures, organic matter maturity, clay mineral evolution, burial depth, and pressure coefficient in the diapir and nondiapir zones of the YGH. The results showed that of the diapir structures in the YGH occurred in the following order: Uplift–spiking–piercing–depositing. The Dongfang area is dominated by low‐amplitude turtle‐back diapir structures with weak energy, whereas the Ledong area is dominated by high‐amplitude spiked diapir structures with strong energy, both of which pressurize the upper formation. The Changnan area is dominated by high‐amplitude pierced/depositing diapirs with strong energy, which can relieve pressure. The influence of the diapir and its associated structures on the formation of overpressure can be attributed to the transport of the diapir body and the associated fault‐fracture system and the local thermal effect caused by the upwelling of hot fluids. Under the influence of the diapir structure, the overpressure top surface of the basin was shallower. According to the degree of influence and intensity of the diapir structure, variations in formation pressure coefficient with depth can be divided into four evolution modes: constant pressure, slow pressurization, “Z” pressurization, and “S” pressurization types. This study provides some guidance and references for the identification and accurate prediction of the overpressure formation mechanism in basins containing diapirs, and helps in formulating efficient drilling and production plans.

Geological Characteristics of Deep Shale Gas in the Silurian Longmaxi Formation in the Southern Sichuan Basin, China

To investigate the geological characteristics and exploration potential of shale gas in the southern Sichuan Basin, we analyze the coupling relationship between the hydrocarbon generation and storage conditions of the Longmaxi Formation and discuss the preservation conditions from the lateral and vertical migration mechanisms of shale gas. According to the results, the organic-rich shale at the bottom was formed in a strongly euxinic and anoxic reducing environment, the oxygen content increased in the upper water body in which the Longmaxi Formation was deposited, and the water body became oxidized. The organic matter type in the shale is dominantly type I kerogen and a small amount of type II1 kerogen. The organic matter content is more than 3.0% and is in the high-to postmature stage. The enrichment of siliceous organisms increases the organic matter and enhances the brittleness of shale, resulting in “superior hydrocarbons and a favorable reservoir”. Pyrolysis of organic matter promotes the formation of organic matter pores and dissolution pores, resulting in a coupled “source-reservoir” accumulation control system. The high vertical formation pressure guarantees the sealing of shale and restrains the lateral escape of shale gas. The high-angle intersection of the highly filled fractures and the current crustal stress can effectively enhance the fracture sealing and inhibit the vertical escape of shale gas, forming a three-dimensional effective closure. Hence, the area featuring a short tectonic uplift time, small amplitudes, large-scale underdeveloped fractures, and a high formation pressure coefficient is a favorable area for shale gas exploration, according to the analysis of three-dimensional preservation conditions.

Classification evaluation method for Chang 7 oil group of Yanchang formation in Ordos Basin

The Chang 7 oil group in the Ordos Basin has the characteristics of a tight lithology, a low formation pressure coefficient and strong reservoir heterogeneity. To better determine reasonable developmental technical countermeasures, oiliness, seepage capacity, and compressibility evaluations are combined. Using a combination of field practice and laboratory experiments, six types of sweetness classification evaluation parameters are screened: oil saturation, longitudinal oil layer structure coefficient, average pore throat radius, gas-oil ratio, brittleness index, and minimum horizontal principal stress. By combining the relationships among variables with the initial production from directional wells, the gray correlation method is used to quantify the weights of the contributions of evaluation parameters to production. On this basis, using the difference method for the curve slope, a sweetness evaluation and classification method for the Chang 7 oil group is constructed, and it solves the difficult problem of quality difference classification for the Chang 7 oil group and provides a reference basis for the optimal design of well patterns and fracturing reconstruction parameters.

Volume fracturing and drainage technologies for low-pressure marine shale gas reservoirs in the Ordos Basin

There are abundant natural gas resources in the marine shale gas reservoir of Middle Ordovician Wulalike Formation in the Ordos Basin, which is an important resource base for PetroChina Changqing Oilfield Company to increase the reserves and production of oil and gas. Compared with the other shale gas reservoirs at home and aboard, however, the marine shale gas reservoir of Middle Ordovician Wulalike Formation in the Ordos Basin has a lower formation pressure coefficient and poorer reservoir physical properties and gas-bearing property, so its production increase difficulty is higher. In this paper, horizontal-well volume fracturing was studied and tested based on the earlier vertical well tests. According to the technical idea of the staged multi-cluster massive fracturing of long horizontal section, the propagation mechanisms and morphological characteristics of fractures were studied and analyzed based on the fracturing geological characteristics of the shale gas reservoir in the Ordos Basin. On this basis, a full three-dimensional fracture model was optimally established for parameter optimization. The fracturing of the test well ZP1 was carried out with 15 stages and 103 clusters. After the fracturing, a more complex fracture network was formed with a fracture complexity index of 0.4–0.6. The microseismic monitoring zone is 579 m long and 266 m wide and the fracture is 146 m high. To address the drainage difficulty after large-volume fracturing of low-pressure shale gas in the Ordos Basin, this paper carries out a gas energized fracturing test. Considering the characteristics of reservoir physical properties, gas-bearing property and segmented fractures, 805 m3 liquid nitrogen was injected in stages during the fracturing of the test horizontal well. The formation pressure coefficient measured from pressure buildup data is increased from 0.7 to 0.8 to 1.88. The wellbore gas–liquid flow model was established and the parameters of long-period control-pressure drainage were optimized. The critical surface equipment was upgraded to achieve accurate measurement, safety and environmental protection. And the following research and practice results were obtained. First, based on the technological innovation and optimization, continuous gas–liquid two-phase flow is realized in the test well ZP1 and its production rate and pressure during the test are stable with the tested daily shale gas production at the wellhead of 6.42 × 104 m3. Second, after fracturing, the absolute open flow of the test well reaches 26.4 × 104 m3/d, which is more than 10 times higher than the production rate of the vertical well in the same block during the test. Thus, a significant breakthrough is realized in the exploration of marine shale gas in North China.
