AbstractWe present a scenario for the formation of super star clusters (with masses larger than 105 M⊙) in which multiple generations of star formation will occur. We stress that the gas left over (∼50%) from first generation (1G) star formation should be retained in such massive clusters (thanks to their deep potential wells, with escape speeds larger than 10 km/s) and be available for a second or even third generation of stars, with the basic HeCNONaMgAl chemical anomalies observed in globular clusters, the latter assumed to be the descendents of these super star clusters. One new feature of this model is the role of C+ cooling of the dense warm trapped neutral or ionized gas which defines a characteristic temperature of ∼100 K, leading to a second generation (2G) of stars with a top-heavy IMF (M > 5 M⊙). The ashes of the 2G very massive stars (VMS, M > 100 M⊙) sampled in this IMF quickly pollute and dilute the left-over pristine gas with their slow winds (that cannot escape the cluster), while the majority of massive stars develop fast winds (that actually can escape from the cluster). Meanwhile, much of the remaining dense T = 100 K gas contracts gravitationally in the massive cluster and may reach densities of the order of 109 cm−3, in which case the Jeans mass drops to about 0.2 M⊙ and leads to a substantial low-mass pre-MS 3G population (most likely on a very short timescale). In this way, we may solve both the mass budget and the excess Helium problem in proto-globular clusters, while also explaining the Na-O and Mg-Al anti-correlations resulting from hot H-burning of very massive stars at 45MK and 75MK, respectively.

Radiation pressure in super star cluster formation

The physics of star formation at its extreme, in the nuclei of the densest and the most massive star clusters in the universe - potential massive black hole nurseries - has for decades eluded scrutiny. Spectroscopy of these systems has been scarce, whereas theoretical arguments suggest that radiation pressure on dust grains somehow inhibits star formation. Here, we harness an accelerated Monte Carlo radiation transport scheme to report a radiation hydrodynamical simulation of super star cluster formation in turbulent clouds. We find that radiation pressure reduces the global star formation efficiency by 30-35%, and the star formation rate by 15-50%, both relative to a radiation-free control run. Overall, radiation pressure does not terminate the gas supply for star formation and the final stellar mass of the most massive cluster is $\sim 1.3\times10^6\,M_\odot$. The limited impact as compared to in idealized theoretical models is attributed to a radiation-matter anti-correlation in the supersonically turbulent, gravitationally collapsing medium. In isolated regions outside massive clusters, where the gas distribution is less disturbed, radiation pressure is more effective in limiting star formation. The resulting stellar density at the cluster core is $\ge 10^{8}\,M_{\odot}\,\textrm{pc}^{-3}$, with stellar velocity dispersion $\gtrsim 70\,\text{km}\,\text{s}^{-1}$. We conclude that the super star cluster nucleus is propitious to the formation of very massive stars via dynamical core collapse and stellar merging. We speculate that the very massive star may avoid the claimed catastrophic mass loss by continuing to accrete dense gas condensing from a gravitationally-confined ionized phase.

Prodigious and Continuous Formation of Super Star Clusters from Cooled Intracluster Gas

AbstractGlobular clusters (GCs) — compact and massive star clusters found ubiquitously around galaxies — are believed to be ancient relics (ages ≳ 10 Gyr) from the early formative phase of galaxies, although their physical origin remains widely debated. The most numerous GC populations are hosted by giant elliptical galaxies, where they can exhibit a broad dispersion in colour interpreted as a wide spread in metallicity. Here, we show that many thousands of similarly compact and massive super star clusters have formed at an approximately steady rate over, at least, the past ~1 Gyr around the nearby giant elliptical galaxy, NGC 1275, at the centre of the Perseus cluster. The number distribution of these young star clusters appears to exhibit a similar dependence in luminosity and mass as the even more numerous but older GCs around NGC 1275. In just a few Gyr, these super star clusters will evolve to become indistinguishable in broadband optical colours from the older GCs, and their spread in age add to the dispersion in colour of these GCs. The spatial distribution of the super star clusters resembles the filamentary network of multiphase gas in the cluster core, implying that they formed from molecular gas amassed from cooling of the hot intracluster gas. The sustained formation of super star clusters from cooled intracluster gas constitutes a previously unrecognised but prodigious source of GCs over cosmic timescales, and contributes to both their enormous numbers and broad colour dispersion in giant elliptical galaxies.

Dense CO in Mrk 71-A: Superwind Suppressed in a Young Super Star Cluster

Abstract We report the detection of CO( ) coincident with the super star cluster (SSC) Mrk 71-A in the nearby Green Pea analog galaxy, NGC 2366. Our observations with the Northern Extended Millimeter Array reveal a compact, ∼7 pc, molecular cloud whose mass ( ) is similar to that of the SSC, consistent with a high star formation efficiency, on the order of 0.5. There are two spatially distinct components separated by 11 . If expanding, these could be due to momentum-driven stellar wind feedback. Alternatively, we may be seeing remnants of the infalling, colliding clouds responsible for triggering the SSC formation. The kinematics are also consistent with a virialized system. These extreme, high-density, star-forming conditions inhibit energy-driven feedback; the co-spatial existence of a massive, molecular cloud with the SSC supports this scenario, and we quantitatively confirm that any wind-driven feedback in Mrk 71-A is momentum-driven, rather than energy-driven. Since Mrk 71-A is a candidate Lyman continuum emitter, this implies that energy-driven superwinds may not be a necessary condition for the escape of ionizing radiation. In addition, the detection of nebular continuum emission yields an accurate astrometric position for the Mrk 71-A. We also detect four other massive molecular clouds in this giant star-forming complex.

The ALMA view of the Antennae galaxy collision: How galaxy interaction triggers the formation of super star clusters

AbstractThe Antennae galaxies are a spectacular example of a burst of star formation triggered by the encounter of two galaxies, being an ideal source to understand how the dynamics of galaxy mergers drives star formation. We present archive ALMA CO(3−2) and VLT near-IR H2spectro-imaging observations, and new ALMA13CO(2−1) and dust continuum observations, at ~50 pc resolution. Combining tracers of density and velocity structure of the gas and its energetics, we demonstrate that star formation involves a complex interplay of merger-driven gas dynamics and turbulence, and the dissipation of the gas kinetic energy. We focus on a compact, bright H2source, associated with cold molecular gas and dust continuum emission, located where the velocity gradient in the interaction region is observed to be the largest. The characteristics of this source suggest that we are witnessing the formation, initiated by turbulent dissipation, of a cloud massive enough (~4×106M⊙) to form a super star cluster within 1 Myr.

ALMA CO and VLT/SINFONI H2observations of the Antennae overlap region: mass and energy dissipation

We present an analysis of super-giant molecular complexes (SGMCs) in the overlap region of the Antennae galaxy merger, based on ALMA CO(3-2) interferometry and VLT/SINFONI imaging spectroscopy of H2 1-0 S(1) at angular resolutions of 0.9" and 0.7", respectively. All but one SGMC have multiple velocity components offset from each other by up to 150 km/s. H2 line emission is found in all SGMCs and the kinematics of H2 and CO are well matched. H2/CO line ratios vary by up to a factor of 10 among SGMCs and different velocity components of the same SGMCs. We also identify the CO counterpart of a bright, compact source of near-IR H2 line emission, which shows no Brgamma, and was first identified with SINFONI. This source has the highest H2/CO line ratio, and coincides with the steepest CO velocity gradient of the entire overlap region. With a size of 50 pc and a virial mass of a few 10^7 Msun it is perhaps a pre-cluster cloud that has not yet formed significant numbers of massive stars. We present observational evidence that the H2 emission is powered by shocks, and demonstrate how the H2 1-0 S(1) and the CO(3-2) lines can be used as tracers of energy dissipation and gas mass, respectively. The variations in the H2/CO line ratio may indicate that the SGMCs are dissipating their turbulent kinetic energy at different rates. The compact source could represent a short (~ 1 Myr) evolutionary stage in the early formation of super-star clusters.

From large scale gas compression to cluster formation in the Antennae overlap region

We present a detailed observational analysis of how merger-driven turbulence may regulate the star-formation efficiency during galaxy interactions and set the initial conditions for the formation of super star clusters. Using VLT/SINFONI, we obtained near-infrared imaging spectroscopy of a small region in the Antennae overlap region, coincident with the supergiant molecular cloud 2 (SGMC 2). We find extended H2 line emission across much of the 600 pc field-of-view, traced at sub-arcsecond spatial resolution. The data also reveal a compact H2 source with broad lines and a dynamical mass Mdyn 10^7 Msun, which has no observable Brg or K-band continuum emission, and no obvious counterpart in the 6 cm radio continuum. Line ratios indicate that the H2 emission of both sources is powered by shocks, making these lines a quantitative tracer of the dissipation of turbulent kinetic energy. The turbulence appears to be driven by the large-scale gas dynamics, and not by feedback from star formation. We propose a scenario where the H2 emission is related to the formation of bound clouds through accretion. The kinetic energy of the accreted gas drives the turbulence and powers the H2 emission. Broad H2 line widths of-order 150 km/s, similar to the velocity gradient of the gas across the field of view, support this idea. Within this interpretation, the compact H2 source could be a massive cloud on its way to form a super star cluster within the next few Myr. This scenario can be further tested with ALMA observations.

Super Star Cluster Luminosity Functions in Interacting Luminous Infrared Galaxies

AbstractYoung and massive super star clusters (SSCs) are found whenever very active star formation is going on, such as that in interacting Luminous Infrared Galaxies (LIRGs). From a deep NIR adaptive optics imaging survey, we present thus far the first K-band SSC luminosity functions (LFs) in these types of galaxies, and also a relation between the brightest SSC and the global SFR of the galaxy. Based on the derived LFs, one can constrain the cluster initial mass function (CIMF) and study the formation and evolution of SSCs. Our preliminary results are in disagreement with theoretical expectations which suggest that the SSC LF should be well fitted by a single power-law with an index of −2. We find power-law indexes of ~−1.5, shallower than the expected ones. Taken at face value, our results appear to support the concept that the CIMF is mass-dependent, not universal, which will be studied in more detail by mass-modelling of the SSCs. The data-set will also allow us to estimate the fraction of total star formation originating in the SSCs over a range of galaxy types.

The molecular environment of the Galactic star forming region G19.61–0.23

We present single-dish (sub)millimeter observations of gas and dust in the Galactic high-mass star-forming region G19.61-0.23, with the aim of studying the large-scale properties and physical conditions of the molecular gas across the region. The final aim is to compare the large-scale (about 100 pc) properties with the small-scale (about 3 pc) properties and to consider possible implications for extragalactic studies. We have mapped CO isotopologues in the J=1-0 transition using the FCRAO-14m telescope and the J=2-1 transition using the IRAM-30m telescope. We have also used data from the ATLASGAL survey and from the BU-FCRAO Galactic Ring Survey, as well as the Spitzer infrared Galactic plane surveys GLIMPSE and MIPSGAL to characterize the star-formation activity within the molecular clouds. We reveal a population of molecular clumps in the 13CO(1-0) emission. Our analysis of the 13CO suggests that the virial parameter (ratio of kinetic to gravitational energy) varies over an order of magnitude between clumps that are unbound and some that are apparently "unstable". This conclusion is independent of whether they show evidence of ongoing star formation. We find that the majority of ATLASGAL sources have MIPSGAL counterparts with luminosities in the range 10^4 - 5 10^4 Lsun and are presumably forming relatively massive stars. We compare our results with previous extragalactic studies of the nearby spiral galaxies M31 and M33; and the blue compact dwarf galaxy Henize2-10. We find that the main giant molecular cloud surrounding G19.61-0.23 has physical properties typical for Galactic GMCs and which are comparable to the GMCs in M31 and M33. However, the GMC studied here shows smaller surface densities and masses than the clouds identified in Henize2-10 and associated with super star cluster formation.

WATER MASERS ASSOCIATED WITH STAR FORMATION IN THE ANTENNAE GALAXIES

We present Very Large Array observations with 80 milliarcsecond resolution (~9 pc) of the recently discovered Galactic-analog water masers in the Antennae interacting galaxies (NGC 4038/NGC 4039; Arp244). Three regions of water maser emission are detected: two in the ``interaction region'' (IAR) and the third ~5.6'' (> 600 pc) west of the NGC 4039 nucleus. The isotropic water maser luminosities range from 1.3 to 7.7 L_sun. All three maser regions are mostly obscured in the optical/near-infrared continuum, and are coincident with massive CO-identified molecular clouds. The water maser velocities are in excellent agreement with those of the molecular gas. We also present archival VLA 3.6 cm data with ~0.28" (~30 pc) and ~0.8" (~90 pc) resolution toward the maser locations. All three maser regions are coincident with compact 3.6 cm radio continuum emission, and two are dominated by thermal ionized gas, suggesting the presence of natal super star clusters containing the equivalent of a few thousand O stars. We also present detailed comparisons between the radio data and existing HST ACS (optical) and NICMOS (near-IR) data and find that both maser regions in the IAR are also associated with Pa\alpha emission and neither source is detected shortward of 2 microns. These results highlight the potential of using Galactic-analog water masers to pinpoint sites of young super star cluster formation with exquisite angular resolution.

The formation of super-star clusters in disk and dwarf galaxies

AbstractSuper-star clusters are probably the largest star-forming entities in our local Universe, containing hundreds of thousands to millions of young stars usually within less than a few parsecs. While no such systems are known in the Milky Way (MW), they are found especially in pairs of interacting galaxies but also in some dwarf galaxies like R 136 in the Large Magelanic Cloud (LMC). With the use of SPH calculations we show that a natural explanation for this phenomenon is the presence of shear in normal spiral galaxies which facilitates the formation of low-density loose OB associations from giant molecular clouds (GMC) instead of dense super-star clusters. In contrast, in interacting galaxies and in dwarf galaxies, regions can collapse without having a large-scale sense of rotation. This lack of rotational support allows the giant molecular clouds to concentrate into a single, dense and gravitationally bound system.

Resolving the molecular environment of super star clusters in Henize 2-10

The rate of star formation both in the Galaxy and in external galaxies should be related to the physical properties of the molecular clouds from which stars form. This is expected for the starbursts found both in irregular galaxies and in some mergers. The dwarf galaxy Henize 2-10 is particularly interesting in this context as it shows a number of newly formed Super Star Clusters (SSCs) associated with a very rich molecular environment. We present a high angular resolution study of the molecular gas associated with the SSCs with the aim of deriving the physical properties of the parent molecular clouds. The final goal is to test the expectation that the formation of SSCs requires exceptionally dense and massive clouds. We have used the Submillimeter Array with an angular resolution of 1.9 X 1.3 to map the J=2-1 transition of CO in Henize 2-10. Supplementary measurements of HCN(J=1-0), 13CO(J=2-1) and millimeter continuum were obtained with the APEX, IRAM-30m and SEST single dish telescopes. Our single dish observations confirm the association of the newly formed SSCs in Henize 2-10 with dense molecular gas. Our interferometric observations resolve the CO(2-1) emission in several giant molecular clouds. Overall the molecular gas accounts for approximately half of the mass in the central regions of Henize 2-10. Although we find indications that the molecular clouds associated with the formation of SSCs in Henize 2-10 are massive and dense, the tracer we used (CO) and the linear resolution of our observations (60 X 80 pc) are still not adequate to test the expectation that exceptionally dense and massive cores are required for SSCs formation.

Multifractality in a ring of star formation: the case of Arp 220

Context. Formation of super star-clusters can be triggered during the final stages of galaxy mergers or galactic interactions, when significant numbers of massive stars are formed out of large gas-cloud systems. Giant cloud complexes show a fractal structure due to turbulence and/or self-gravitation; therefore, super clusters formed out of these complexes are expected to show a multifractal spectrum. Aims. Here we investigate the projected spatial distribution of young massive clusters in the ultraluminous infrared galaxy Arp 220 and its underlying fractal geometry. Methods. The projected radial distribution of super clusters is dominated by a prominent ring of star formation. Taking the presence of this annulus into account, the fractal spectrum is determined by using the Minkowski-sausage method to compute the Minkowski-Bouligand dimension as a function of the parameter q. Results. The ring appears to extend from a radial distance of 2.0 to 4.5 kpc. The Arp 220 annulus of star formation could be an outer ring associated with the outer Lindblad resonance/radius of corotation. The average projected fractal dimension in the ring of star formation is found to be 1.7 ± 0.1, which is consistent with values found for non-starburst, star-forming regions in spiral galaxies. However, the fractal dimension appears to be lower in the outer regions of the ring and, for Arp 220, this implies an actual decrease in the fractal dimension over time probably induced by star cluster destruction. This trend is not observed under quiescent star formation. Conclusions. The projected distribution of super clusters in Arp 220 can be described using an annular model, and it exhibits multifractal behaviour. The properties of its fractal geometry are similar to those found in quiescent star-forming regions in disk galaxies although the average fractal dimension evolves differently over time, decreasing instead of increasing. This result implies that, for the short-term evolution of super cluster populations, destruction may be far more important than diffusion-like processes.

Star Clusters and Galactic Chemodynamics: Implosive Formation of Super Star Clusters

AbstractWe numerically investigate dynamical and chemical properties of star clusters (open and globular clusters, and ‘super star clusters’, SSC) formed in interacting/merging galaxies. The investigation is two-fold: (a) large-scale (100 pc–100 kpc) SPH simulations on density and temperature evolution of gas in interacting/merging galaxies and (b) small-scale simulations on the effects of the high gas pressure of the ISM on the evolution of molecular clouds. We find that the pressure of ISM in merging galaxies can become higher than the internal pressure of GMCs (∼105kB K cm–3), in particular, in the tidal tails or the central regions of mergers. We also find that GMCs can collapse to form SSCs within an order of 107 yr due to the strong compression by the high-pressure ISM in mergers.

Watching the Birth of Super Star Clusters

Subarcsecond infrared and radio observations yield important information about the formation of super star clusters from their surrounding gas. We discuss the general properties of ionized and molecular gas near young, forming SSCs, as illustrated by the prototypical young, forming super star cluster nebula in the dwarf galaxy NGC 5253. This super star cluster appears to have a gravitationally bound nebula, and the lack of molecular gas suggests a very high star formation efficiency, consistent with the formation of a large, bound cluster.
