Spatio-temporal variability of the salinity intrusion, mixing, and estuarine turbidity maximum in a tide-dominated tropical monsoon estuary

The hydrodynamic processes of tropical estuaries in developing Asian countries are rarely reported due to their complex shape, high tidal range, long monsoon season with high river flows, and lack of infrastructure and technology. Therefore, this study investigates the seasonal and neap-spring tidal variability of salinity intrusion, mixing and formation of estuarine turbidity maximum (ETM) in a multi-branched estuarine system, Tanintharyi River estuary, Myanmar during the neap-spring tidal cycle in both dry and wet seasons of 2019. The salinity intrusion, mixing and ETM in the estuary exhibited both spatial and temporal (neap-spring tidal and seasonal) variability. The ETM zone was located at the high salinity region during the dry season whereas it was located at the low salinity region during the wet season. Hence, the ETM zones are not associated with a singular salinity, which is a different phenomenon that has been previously reported in tide-dominated estuaries. The spatial variability of salinity intrusion, mixing, and ETM in different branches at the same time during each season can be attributed to the effect of the length and shape of each branch. Finally, these hydrodynamic processes in the estuary were influenced by the strong tidal flow during the dry season whereas the river flow slightly dominated the tidal flow during the wet season.

Tidal Asymmetry in Ocean-Boundary Flux and In-Estuary Trapping of Suspended Sediment Following Watershed Storms: San Francisco Estuary, California, USA

Suspended-sediment flux at the ocean boundary of the San Francisco Estuary—the Golden Gate—was measured over a tidal cycle following peak watershed runoff from storms to the estuary in two successive years to investigate sediment transport through the estuary. Observations were repeated during low-runoff conditions, for a total of three field campaigns. Boat-based measurements of velocity and acoustic backscatter were used to calculate water and suspended-sediment flux at a location 1 km landward of the Golden Gate. Suspended-sediment concentration (SSC) and salinity data from up-estuary sensors were used to track watershed-sourced sediment plumes through the estuary. Estimates of suspended-sediment load from the watershed and net suspended-sediment flux for one up-estuary subembayment were used to infer in-estuary trapping of sediment. For both post-storm field campaigns, observations at the ocean boundary were conducted on the receding limb of the watershed hydrograph. At the ocean boundary, peak instantaneous suspended-sediment flux was tidally asymmetric and was greater on flood tides than on ebb tides for all three field campaigns, due to higher average SSC in the cross-section on flood tides. Shear-induced sediment resuspension was greater on flood tides and suggests the presence of an erodible pool outside the estuary. The storms in 2016 led to less export of discharge and sediment from the watershed and greater sediment trapping within one up-estuary subembayment compared to that observed in 2017. Results suggest that substantial trapping of watershed sediments occurred during both storm events, likely due to the formation of estuarine turbidity maxima (ETM) at different locations in the estuary. ETM locations were forced nearer the ocean boundary in 2017. Additional measurements and modeling are required to quantify the long-term sediment flux at the Golden Gate.

Unraveling the Essential Effects of Flocculation on Large-Scale Sediment Transport Patterns in a Tide-Dominated Estuary

AbstractSediment transport in estuaries and the formation of estuarine turbidity maxima (ETM) highly depend on the ability of suspended particulate matter (SPM) to flocculate into larger aggregates. While most literature focuses on the small-scale impact of biological flocculants on the formation of larger aggregates, the influence of the flocculation process on large-scale estuarine SPM profiles is still largely unknown. In this paper, we study the impact of flocculation of SPM on the formation of ETM. For this, a semianalytical width-integrated model called iFlow is utilized and extended by a flocculation model. Starting from a complex one-class flocculation model, we show that flocculation may be described as a linear relation between settling velocity and suspended sediment concentration to capture its leading-order effect on the ETM formation. The model is applied to a winter case in the Scheldt estuary (Belgium, Netherlands) and calibrated to a unique, long-term, two-dimensional set of turbidity (cf. SPM) observations. First, model results with and without the effect of flocculation are compared, showing that the spatial and temporal variations of the settling velocity due to flocculation are essential to reproduce the observed magnitude of the suspended sediment concentrations and its dependence on river discharge. Second, flocculation results in tidally averaged land-inward sediment transport. Third, we conduct a sensitivity analysis of the freshwater discharge and floc breakup parameter, which shows that flocculation can cause additional estuarine turbidity maxima and can prevent flushing of the ETM for high freshwater inflow.

Suspended sediment dynamics in a well-mixed estuary: The role of high suspended sediment concentration (SSC) from the adjacent sea area

Understanding the sediment transport processes, especially the formation and maintenance of the estuarine turbidity maximum (ETM) in estuaries is essential for dealing with harbour siltation and the related estuarine environmental issues. To gain insight into the mechanism of sediment dynamics and ETM formation in the Yongjiang estuary (YE), which is well-mixed and features abundant suspended sediment sourced from the adjacent sea area, field observations were conducted in June 2015. The flow velocity, salinity, and suspended sediment concentration (SSC) were synchronously measured over a 25-h tidal cycle along the YE and its adjacent sea area. Observations showed that there was abundant suspended sediment exchanging between the YE and its adjacent sea area. In particular, there existed an obvious difference in the single or twin peak SSC signals in different stations during a semi-diurnal tidal cycle, especially between the inner-estuary and outer-estuary regions. Detailed analyses on the processes of sediment transport showed that, in the outer sea area, the tidal-driven advection of suspended sediment was dominant to the temporal distribution of SSC, which was featured by a single peak signal in a semi-diurnal tidal cycle. For the estuarine channel, the landward transport of high-concentration suspended sediment by the flood current from the sea region was the major inducement of peak SSC signals in the lower reach of the YE, while the effect of bed sediment resuspension was mainly responsible for the peak signals during the ebb period. Unlike the formation of ETM in highly stratified or partially mixed estuaries, the ETM in the YE, which is located approximately 7 km upstream from the estuary mouth, was mainly controlled by the effect of tidal asymmetry, together with the contributions made by local resuspension of bed sediment and possible fluid mud. Some other possible factors, such as deflocculation, may also impact the formation and maintenance of the ETM in the YE, but further study is needed in the future.

Three-dimensional semi-idealized model for estuarine turbidity maxima in tidally dominated estuaries

We develop a three-dimensional idealized model that is specifically aimed at gaining insight in the physical mechanisms resulting in the formation of estuarine turbidity maxima in tidally dominated estuaries. First, the three-dimensional equations for water motion and suspended sediment concentration together with the so-called morphodynamic equilibrium condition, are scaled. Next, surface elevation, velocity and sediment concentration are expanded in a small parameter ϵ=A¯M2/H, where A¯M2 is the mean amplitude of the M2 tide and H is the mean water depth at the seaward side. This results in a system of equations at each order in this small parameter. This ordering allows solving for the vertical structure of the velocity and suspended sediment concentration, independently of the horizontal dimension. After obtaining these vertical structures, the horizontal dependencies of the physical variables follow from solving a two-dimensional elliptic partial differential equation for the surface elevation. The availability of fine sediments in the estuary follows from a two-dimensional elliptic partial differential equation which results from requiring the system to be in morphodynamic equilibrium, and prescribing the total amount of easily erodible sediments available in the estuary. These elliptic equations for the surface elevation and sediment availability are solved numerically using the finite element method with cubic polynomials as basis functions. As a first application, the model is applied to the Ems estuary using a simplified geometry and bathymetric profiles characteristic for the years 1980 and 2005. The availability of fine sediments and location of maximum concentration are investigated for different lateral depth profiles. In the first experiment, a uniform lateral depth is considered. In this case, both the sediment availability and suspended sediment concentration are, as expected, uniform in the lateral direction. In 1980, the sediment is mainly trapped near the entrance, while in 2005, the sediment is mostly trapped in the freshwater zone. In the next experiment, the lateral bathymetry is varied parabolically while keeping the mean depth unchanged. In this case, the fine sediment is mainly found at the shallow sides, but the maximum sediment concentration is found in the deeper channel where the bed shear stress is much larger than on the shoals. As a final experiment, a more realistic (but smoothed) geometry and bathymetry for the Ems estuary are considered, showing the possibilities of applying the newly developed model to complex geometries and bathymetries.

Observation of an Estuarine Turbidity Maximum in the Highly Impacted Capibaribe Estuary, Brazil

Estuarine turbidity maxima (ETM) are features present in some estuaries where the concentration of suspended particulate matter (SPM) is higher than elsewhere along the fresh-marine water transition in the estuarine domain (POSTMA, 1967; SCHUBEL, 1968; GEYER, 1993; DYER, 1995). The presence of ETM has important ecological implications: since they occur at places where there is an accumulation of organic matter: bacterioplancton and zooplankton dynamics in estuaries is affected by ETM behavior (CRUMP; BAROSS, 1996; MORGAN et al., 1997). ETM are also important in the pollutants dynamics of an estuary, mainly for those that occur adsorbed to fine clayey sediments (BRUNK et al., 1996). ETM are formed and maintained as the result of complex interactions between river discharge, tidal dynamics and gravitational circulation (DYER, 1988). The concentration of SPM in the ETM varies over time on tidal, sinodical and seasonal time scales (GRABEMANN et al., 1997). ETM have been studied in many estuaries abroad (ALLEN et al., 1980; GELFENBAUM, 1983; UNCLES et al., 1994; WOLANSKI et al., 1995). In some estuaries they are of an ephemeral nature (KISTNER; PETTIGREW, 2001), while in other cases they do not occur at all (SCHETTINI; TOLDO JUNIOR, 2006; SCHETTINI et al., 2006). The physics underlying the formation of the ETM has been studied using both analytical and numerical models (GEYER, 1993; JAY; MUSIAK, 1994; BURCHARD; BAUMERT, 1998; YU et al., 2014) in which the effect of gravitational circulation and tidal pumping is of primary importance, with a high degree of interaction between the flow and the bed. Most ETM have been reported in meso or macro-tidal estuaries. As regards the Brazilian coast, it is not expected to find ETM in the Southeastern and Southern Regions basically because the tidal regime is microtidal. Some papers have reported ETM processes in Paranagua Bay (PR) (e.g., RIBEIRO et al., 2011), although the higher turbidity zone in that estuary is linked rather to re-suspension due to tidal currents (MANTOVANELLI et al., 2004) than to the occurrence of a true ETM. Other studies on SPM in southern Brazilian estuaries have not reported the presence of ETM (SCHETTINI; TOLDO JUNIOR, 2006; D´AQUINO et al., 2010). On the other hand, meso and macro tides occur on the shores of the Northeastern and Northern Regions, where there would be a greater likelihood of observing ETM. Nevertheless, there are not many studies of the fine sediment dynamics of this area, and the few that are available do not report the presence of ETM. The fine sediment dynamics of the Caravelas estuary, Bahia has been assessed (SCHETTINI; MIRANDA, 2010; SCHETTINI et al., 2013), despite the fact that this estuary presents a very small freshwater inflow, and the major source of sediments is the inner shelf. Such conditions are unfavorable to the formation of ETM. The eastern shores of Para seem to present favorable conditions for the formation of ETM, and a single survey carried out in the Caete estuary has shown a feature in the longitudinal distribution of SPM which fits in with what is expected of an ETM (ASP et al., 2012), even though it has not yet been assessed.A series of surveys has been carried out in the Capibaribe estuary since 2012 to investigate its circulation, fine sediment transport, deposition patterns and recent environmental evolution. Seasonal dynamics of turbidity maximum in the Muthupet estuary, India

Results are presented of the longitudinal and vertical profiling of salinity and suspended particulate matter (SPM) at the Muthupet estuary, India, during a one year period under widely varying freshwater flow conditions. Freshwater flow was available during post-monsoon and monsoon. An up-estuary shift in the location of estuarine turbidity maxima (ETM) was observed during the transition from post-monsoon to pre-monsoon and further it shifted downstream during the transition from pre-monsoon to monsoon, thereby exhibiting a pronounced seasonal cycle. The salinity intrusion was dependent on the freshwater discharge and was expressed as a power function of freshwater flow, explaining 97% of the variance. The formation of a salt plug in Muthupet estuary and its seasonal dynamics were observed, which is not an identified feature of any of the Indian estuaries studied so far. The geographical positions of salt plug and ETM core were more or less the same during their formation. The occurrence of two ETM during the LW of post-monsoon and the absence of ETM during monsoon explains the strong seasonal variation in the formation of ETM. The primary factor affecting the formation of ETM was identified as the freshwater flow over an annual cycle; the resuspension of sediments by tidal current affecting the formation on a flood/ebb cycle was secondary. The extent of shift of ETM was found to be an inverse logarithmic function of the freshwater discharge. The separation between ETM intrusion and salinity intrusion increased two fold with the increase in ETM intrusion.

The turbidity maximum zone in a shallow, well-flushed Sabaki estuary in Kenya

The spatial–temporal variability and the behaviour of the Estuarine Turbidity Maximum (ETM) zone in the shallow, ephemeral, well-flushed Sabaki estuary located in the northern region of the Kenya coast, were studied during a period of moderate river discharge. The estuary is one of the most turbid estuaries along the coast of East Africa, characterised by high sediment input and high suspended matter (SPM) concentrations. The estuary is completely flushed after every tidal cycle and it experiences high salinity and SPM concentration gradients at high water (HW). The ETM was present at HW during periods when the river runoff was near the long-term average of 73m3s−1 and also when the river runoff was relatively low (35m3s−1). The SPM concentrations in the ETM zone varied significantly depending on the river sediment input and phase of the semi-diurnal tide. The SPM concentrations in the ETM were on average 50% greater than those associated with river runoff. The ETM was located up-estuary during periods when river runoff was around the average and further down-estuary during periods of low river runoff, due to different sediment settling rates. There was a tendency for the accumulation of fine sediments and clay mud in a zone of low current velocities located in the lower middle region of the estuary below the freshwater–saltwater interface, causing formation of an ETM zone. The ETM was separated from the salt-limit due to the lag in time in the tidally-driven resuspension of bottom mud and subsequent tidally-driven advection of turbid water up-estuary during the flood period. The relatively low current velocities combined with high horizontal and vertical gradient in eddy diffusivity in the central region of the estuary, tended to favour rapid settling of flocculated sediments, leading to the formation of the ETM. The study concludes that rapid settling through non-turbulent pycnocline is the dominant mechanism responsible for the formation of the Sabaki estuary ETM. The study also shows that the formation of inter-tidal mudflats is related to the ETM dynamics.

The Nature and Distribution of Particulate Matter in the Mandovi Estuary, Central West Coast of India

Systematic seasonal variations of suspended particulate matter (SPM) along a 44-km transect of the Mandovi estuary reveal that the concentrations of SPM are low at river-end stations, increase generally seaward, and are highest at sea-end stations of the estuary. An estuarine turbidity maximum (ETM) occurs at sea-end stations during June–September when river discharge is high and also in February–May when river discharge is low. These are the two windiest times of year, the former associated with the southwest monsoon and the latter characterized by a persistent sea breeze. The salinity vs. SPM plot shows that high SPM is a seaward deposit and skewed landward. Suspended matter comprised of floccules, fecal pellets, and aggregates that consist of clay and biogenic particles occur everywhere in the estuary. Diatoms are the most common and are of marine type at the sea-end and freshwater-dominated at river-end stations of the estuary. SPM is characterized by kaolinite- and smectite-rich clay mineral suites at the river- and sea-end stations, respectively. Smectite concentrations increase seawards with the increase in SPM content and are not influenced by salinity. Wind-driven waves and currents and biogeochemical processes at the mouth of estuary likely play an important role in the formation of ETM in resuspension and transformation of SPM into floccules and aggregates and in their upkeep or removal.

Modeling diagnosis of suspended sediment transport in tidal estuarine system

A three-dimensional, time-dependent hydrodynamic and suspended sediment transport model was performed and applied to the Danshuei River estuarine system and adjacent coastal sea in northern Taiwan. The model was validated with observed time-series salinity in 2001, and with salinity and suspended sediment distributions in 2002. The predicted results quantitatively agreed with the measured data. A local turbidity maximum was found in the bottom water of the Kuan-Du station. The validated model then was conducted with no salinity gradient, no sediment supply from the sediment bed, wind stress, and different freshwater discharges from upstream boundaries to comprehend the influences on suspended sediment dynamics in the Danshuei River estuarine system. The results reveal that concentrations of the turbidity maximum simulated without salinity gradient are higher than those of the turbidity maximum simulated with salinity gradient at the Kuan-Du station. Without bottom resuspension process, the estuarine turbidity maximum zone at the Kuan-Du station vanishes. This suggests that bottom sediment resuspension is a very important sediment source to the formation of estuarine turbidity maximum. The wind stress with northeast and southwest directions may contribute to decrease the suspended sediment concentration. When the freshwater discharges increase at the upstream boundaries, the limits of salt intrusion pushes downriver toward river mouth. Suspended sediment concentrations increase at the upriver reaches in the Danshuei River to Tahan Stream, while decrease at Kuan-Du station.

The Formation of Estuarine Turbidity Maxima Due to Density Effects in the Salt Wedge. A Hydrodynamic Process Study

Abstract By means of a numerical model of an idealized flat-bottom estuary, the paper studies the hydrodynamic control of the turbidity zone by the combined effect of the salt wedge and tidal movements. The model is of two- dimensional (x, z) finite-difference type with high resolution in time and space. It computes momentum, surface elevation, salinity, suspended particulate matter (SPM), turbulent kinetic energy, and dissipation rate as prognostic state variables. At the seaward boundary a tidal forcing is applied. At the landward boundary a weir is situated where a constant freshwater discharge is prescribed. The initial SPM concentration is horizontally homogeneous. After simulating a few tidal periods the model results exhibit the evolution of a stable SPM peak (the estuarine turbidity maximum or ETM) at the tip of the salt wedge.
