Flow–acoustic resonance mechanism in tandem deep cavities coupled with acoustic eigenmodes in turbulent shear layers

This study presents the interplay of flow and acoustics within tandem deep cavities, focusing on the resonance mechanism occurring between turbulent shear layers and acoustic eigenmodes. The arrangement inside the tandem deep cavities includes both close and remote configurations. A combined fully coupled and decoupled aeroacoustic simulation strategy was devised. Employing an advanced high-order spectral/hp element method in conjunction with implicit large eddy simulation, the nonlinear compressible Navier–Stokes equations were solved to acquire internal flow–acoustic resonant field. In parallel, the linearized Navier–Stokes equations were tackled to determine coherent shear layer perturbations with external acoustic forcing. Based on acoustic measurements, the mainstream Reynolds number approaches approximately $R{e_{in}} = {O}({10^5})$ , where we identified the presence of frequency lock-in and a resonance range. Aeroacoustic noise sources were examined by implementing spectral proper orthogonal decomposition to decompose the pressure fields into hydrodynamic and acoustic components. As feedback intensified, the flow characteristics by the acoustic forcing effect and the flow-interactive effect were categorized according to the development of concurrent turbulent shear layers. Subsequently, the alternating and synchronous behaviours of concurrent shear layers resonated with the out-of-phase and in-phase acoustic eigenmodes were identified, and the corresponding large-scale counter-rotating vortex pairs and co-rotating vortex structures at the cavity entrances were extracted. The acoustic power generated by the Coriolis force was calculated using Howe's vortex-sound analogy, and the aeroacoustic energy transfer mechanism between large-scale shear layer vortices with acoustic eigenmodes was further explored. Finally, a linear response of coherent perturbations of the concurrent shear layers by external acoustic forcing was established. The amplification of flow in the streamwise direction toward the main duct led to the formation of coherent vortex structures, accompanied by separation bubbles into the main duct.

Intermittency of density fluctuations and zonal-flow generation in MAST edge plasmas

The properties of the edge ion-scale turbulence are studied using the beam emission spectroscopy (BES) diagnostic on MAST. Evidence of the formation of large-scale high-amplitude coherent structures, filamentary density blobs and holes, 2–4 cm inside the plasma separatrix is presented. Measurements of radial velocity and skewness of the density fluctuations indicate that density holes propagate radially inwards, with the skewness profile peaking at 7–10 cm inside the separatrix. Poloidal velocities of the density fluctuations measured using cross-correlation time delay estimation (CCTDE) are found to exhibit an intermittent behaviour. Zonal-flow analysis reveals the presence of poloidally symmetric coherent oscillations – low-frequency (LF) zonal flows and geodesic acoustic modes (GAM). Shearing rates of the observed zonal flows are found to be comparable to the turbulence decorrelation rate. The observed bursts in density-fluctuation power are followed by quiescent periods with a transient increase in the power of sheared flows. Three-wave interactions between broadband turbulence and a GAM are illustrated using the autobispectral technique. It is shown that the zonal flows and the density-fluctuation field are nonlinearly coupled and LF zonal flows mediate the energy transfer from high- to low-frequency density fluctuations.

Effect of salinity on solution properties of a partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide

The growing energy demand requires maximization of oil recovery from known reserves, while enhanced oil recovery (EOR) techniques are focused on sweeping residuals available in reservoirs previously flooded with water. Polymer additives are widely applied in EOR processes, as they can increase the viscosity and reduce the water permeability leading to mobility decrease of the injected solution. In this study, structural and rheological characterizations of a partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (FLOPAAM 3630S) were performed in a wide range of salinity relevant to conditions in existing oil reservoirs. Macromolecular solutions were identified at low polymer concentrations and/or at elevated salt levels, while gelation, i.e., formation of coherent structure, was observed at high FLOPAAM 3630S doses at low salinity. The transition points between these stages were determined and a comparison of scattering and rheology measurements revealed that the driving force of such a transformation is of non-electrostatic origin, but rather relies on the hydrophobic intermolecular interactions. The results bring new insights into the design of efficient EOR processes applied in oil reservoirs of different salt levels.

Lagrangian Coherent Structures in the Mediterranean Sea: Seasonality and basin regimes

The dynamics of fluid flows give rise to robust, persistent circulation features that underpin the flow and exert strong control over the advection of water masses, either enhancing it or suppressing it, collectively known as lagrangian coherent structures. Lagrangian approaches and metrics have been shown to be better suited than eulerian ones at locating and delineating such structures and capturing the effect they have on the formation and dispersion of water masses, particularly at the smaller scales. In this paper, we use the framework of lagrangian coherent structures to analyse the ocean velocity fields over a climatological year obtained from a high-resolution eddy-resolving model in order to investigate the lagrangian regimes that affect the motion, separation and mixing of water masses in the Mediterranean Sea. The lagrangian regimes that develop in each sub-basin over the course of the year are characterised and regions of persistent lagrangian activity and coherent structure formation and presence are identified. A quantitative picture of the seasonal variability of the lagrangian coherent structure-induced horizontal mixing and vortex formation is obtained.

Formation and evolution of coherent structures in 3D strongly turbulent magnetized plasmas

We review the current literature on the formation of coherent structures (CoSs) in strongly turbulent 3D magnetized plasmas. CoSs [Current Sheets (CS), magnetic filaments, large amplitude magnetic disturbances, vortices, and shocklets] appear intermittently inside a turbulent plasma and are collectively the locus of magnetic energy transfer (dissipation) into particle kinetic energy, leading to heating and/or acceleration of the latter. CoSs and especially CSs are also evolving and fragmenting, becoming locally the source of new clusters of CoSs. Strong turbulence can be generated by the nonlinear coupling of large amplitude unstable plasma modes, by the explosive reorganization of large-scale magnetic fields, or by the fragmentation of CoSs. A small fraction of CSs inside a strongly turbulent plasma will end up reconnecting. Magnetic Reconnection (MR) is one of the potential forms of energy dissipation of a turbulent plasma. Analyzing the evolution of CSs and MR in isolation from the surrounding CoSs and plasma flows may be convenient for 2D numerical studies, but it is far from a realistic modeling of 3D astrophysical, space, and laboratory environments, where strong turbulence can be exited, such as in the solar wind, the solar atmosphere, solar flares and Coronal Mass Ejections, large-scale space and astrophysical shocks, the magnetosheath, the magnetotail, astrophysical jets, and Edge Localized Modes in confined laboratory plasmas (tokamaks).

Simulating Rayleigh-Taylor induced magnetohydrodynamic turbulence in prominences

Aims.Solar prominences are large-scale condensations suspended against gravity within the solar atmosphere. The Rayleigh-Taylor (RT) instability is proposed to be one of the fundamental processes that lead to the generation of dynamics at many spatial and temporal scales within these long-lived, cool, and dense structures, which are located in the solar corona. We aim to study such turbulent processes using high-resolution, direct numerical simulations of solar prominences.Methods.We ran 2.5D ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations with the open-sourceMPI-AMRVACcode far into the nonlinear evolution of an RT instability perturbed at the prominence-corona interface. Our simulation achieves a resolution down to ∼23 km on a 2D (x, y) domain of size 30 Mm × 30 Mm. We followed the instability transitioning from a multimode linear perturbation to its nonlinear, fully turbulent state. Over the succeeding ∼25 min period, we performed a statistical analysis of the prominence at a cadence of ∼0.858 s.Results.We find that the dominant guiding component,Bz, induces coherent structure formation predominantly in the vertical velocity component,Vy, consistent with observations, indicating an anisotropic turbulence state within our prominence. We find power-law scalings in the inertial range for the velocity, magnetic, and temperature fields. The presence of intermittency is evident from the probability density functions of the field fluctuations, which depart from Gaussianity as we consider smaller and smaller scales. In exact agreement, the higher-order structure functions quantify the multi-fractality, as do different scale characteristics and the behavior between the longitudinal and transverse directions. Thus, the statistics remain consistent with conclusions from previous observational studies, enabling us to directly relate the RT instability to the turbulent characteristics found within quiescent prominences.

Dissipative Solitons and Switching Waves in Dispersion-Modulated Kerr Cavities

We theoretically and experimentally investigate the formation of dissipative coherent structures in Kerr nonlinear optical microresonators, whose spectrum encompasses an integrated dispersion that exceeds the cavity free-spectral range. We are able to access this regime in low-dispersion photonic chip-based microresonators by employing synchronous pulse driving, which increases the peak power over the continuous-wave-driving regime. Exploring this dispersion-folded regime, we demonstrate that the presence of periodically varying dispersion can excite higher-order comb structures, which we explore in both the normal and anomalous dispersion regimes. In the former, we observe the coexistence of switching wave fronts with Faraday instability-induced period-doubling patterns. They manifest as strong satellite microcombs highly separated either side of the core microcomb, at an offset close to half the repetition rate but while sharing the same repetition rate. In the latter, for dissipative Kerr solitons in anomalous dispersion, we observe the formation of higher-order phase-matched dispersive waves (“Kelly-like” sidebands), where the folded dispersion crosses the frequency comb grid. We observe up to the fifth higher-order dispersive wave in our experiments and show that these higher-order dispersive waves coherently extend the soliton frequency comb bandwidth significantly. For both cases, we show that our results can be understood by considering four-wave mixing in a two-dimensional Fourier transform representation. Mechanical energy loss and Rayleigh-Taylor instability in free discharge of vertical sharp-edged orifices

Orifice discharge is a classical hydrodynamic phenomenon. The experiments of liquid free jets through vertical sharp-edged orifices were conducted on the influences of orifice geometry and liquid depth. The flow mechanism indicates that the higher energy loss of thin-walled orifice is caused by the inspired air annulus inside orifice channel which will lead to the Rayleigh-Taylor instability. The theoretical derivation further demonstrated that the consecutive collisions between main stream and surface waves can cause significant energy dissipation. Besides, a kind of transition orifice was found for the first time: the increase of liquid depth can induce a sudden switch from the thick-walled orifice mechanism to the thin-walled one. The presentation in this work on the formation and development of coherent structures, the migration and bursting of vortexes, as well as the interaction between vortexes and free interface, is universal for revealing the essential features of multi-phase flow in form friction.

Multiscale Features of Magnetic Field Fluctuations and Field-Aligned Currents in the Polar Ionosphere: A Case Study

Complexity is a typical feature of space plasmas that may involve the formation of multiscale coherent magnetic and plasma structures. The winding features (pseudo-polarization) of magnetic field fluctuations at different spatial scales are a useful quantity in this framework for investigating complexity in space plasma. Indeed, a strong link between pseudo-polarization, magnetic/plasma structures, turbulence and dissipation exists. We present some preliminary results on the link between the polarization of the magnetic field fluctuations and the structure of field-aligned currents in the high-latitude ionosphere. This study is based on high-resolution (50 Hz) magnetic field data collected on board the European Space Agency Swarm constellation. The results show the existence of a clear link between the multiscale coarse-grained structure of pseudo-polarization and intensity of the field-aligned currents, supporting the recent findings according to which turbulence may be capable of generating multiscale filamentary current structures in the auroral ionosphere. This feature is also examined theoretically, along with its significance for the rate of energy deposition and heating in the polar regions.

Design of Rotary Wings with Passive Mitigation of Coherent Tip Vortex Roll-Up

A rotor blade radial loading profile is presented that aims to passively mitigate the formation of coherent tip vortex structures in the near-field of the rotor wake. The method leverages principles of Helmholtz’s theorems, where the strength of the vortex wake is proportional to radial gradients in the blade loading distribution. By avoiding such radial gradients, the near-field roll-up of the wake vortex can be mitigated. A pair of two-bladed rotor designs configured with the same thrust coefficient was produced using a finite-vortex rotary lifting line framework coupled to a constrained power optimization problem. A baseline rotor was designed based on a power-optimized approach, and a wake-optimized rotor was designed based on a power-optimized approach with an additional blade-root bending moment constraint. Phase-averaged stereoscopic particle image velocimetry data were acquired for each rotor operating in hover. The wake-optimized rotor blade produced a wake characterized by conical vortex sheets of significantly lower peak vorticity than the compact, helical tip vortices produced by the baseline design. The wake-optimized design exhibited increased axial velocities near the root that caused radial distortions of the wake flow structures, which were also found to decay at a faster rate than that for the baseline design.

Large-scale circulations in a shear-free convective turbulence: Mean-field simulations

It has been previously shown [Elperin et al., “Formation of large-scale semi-organized structures in turbulent convection,” Phys. Rev. E 66, 066305 (2002)] that a non-rotating turbulent convection with nonuniform large-scale flows contributes to the turbulent heat flux. As a result, the turbulent heat flux depends explicitly not only on the gradients of the large-scale temperature, but also on the gradients of the large-scale velocity. This is because the nonuniform large-scale flows produce anisotropic velocity fluctuations, which modify the turbulent heat flux. This effect causes an excitation of a convective-wind instability and formation of large-scale semi-organized coherent structures (large-scale convective cells). In the present study, we perform mean-field numerical simulations of shear-free convection, which take into account the modification of the turbulent heat flux by nonuniform large-scale flows. We use periodic boundary conditions in horizontal direction as well as stress-free or no-slip boundary conditions in vertical direction. We show that the redistribution of the turbulent heat flux by the nonuniform large-scale motions in turbulent convection plays a crucial role in the formation of the large-scale semi-organized coherent structures. In particular, this effect results in a strong reduction of the critical effective Rayleigh number (based on the eddy viscosity and turbulent temperature diffusivity) required for the formation of the large-scale convective cells. We demonstrate that the convective-wind instability is excited when the scale separation ratio between the height of the convective layer and the integral turbulence scale is large. The level of the mean kinetic energy at saturation increases with the scale separation ratio. We also show that inside the large-scale convective cells, there are local regions with the positive vertical gradient of the potential temperature, which implies that these regions are stably stratified.

Optical-acoustics source analysis of supersonic jet noise reduction using micro vortex generators

A new supersonic jet noise reduction technology has been developed using Micro Vortex Generators (MVGs) by the collaboration between the University of Cincinnati and the Naval Research Laboratory. MVGs are used on model scale nozzles that are representative of GE F404 engine nozzles. Noise reductions up to −10 dB have been observed in both laboratory measurements and LES simulations at conditions related to take off in the overexpanded regime. Analysis of the acoustic field and flow field using Schlieren visualization reveal the noise reduction mechanisms associated with MVGs. Direct visualization of the changes in shock cell spacing, Large Coherent Structures (LCS) formation, and their convective velocity are identified and those changes modify the downstream propagating hydrodynamic waves and the upstream propagating acoustics waves. Spectral Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (SPOD) is utilized to examine the flow sources at frequencies associated with the noise components observed in the acoustic spectra to explain the noise reduction mechanisms of MVGs.

Onset of instabilities in rotating flows by direct numerical simulation

A rotating disk is the canonical experiment for measuring surface reaction rates in geochemical and electrochemical systems. Using the similarity solution for laminar flow around an infinite disk, the mass transfer coefficient can be simply related to the intrinsic reaction rate at the surface. However, measurements of mass transfer rates use a finite-size disk within a larger container of solution; here the flow is no longer strictly laminar, but there must always be some recirculation. Our interest was initially in the assumption of a uniform radial concentration field, how this breaks down near the perimeter of the disk, and what effect that might have on the measured mass transfer rates. However, our numerical simulations suggest that the flow around a finite-size disk becomes time dependent at Reynolds number ( $Re$ ) below 1000, which is much smaller than the typical values in mass-transfer measurements ( ${Re} \sim 10^4$ ). We observe the formation of coherent structures in the flow, which suggest a non-uniform mass transfer at the disk surface. The rotating-disk flow follows a similar sequence of instabilities to the Taylor–Couette flow: a centrifugal instability leading an axisymmetric, time-invariant flow, followed by a Hopf bifurcation to a time-periodic flow. To minimise the possibility that our results are a numerical artefact, we have also simulated the instability in the stationary boundary layer of a rotor–stator flow, comparing with self-similar solutions at low ${Re}$ and with spectral methods near the critical Reynolds number.

Coherent structure formation via spatial phase coupling in two-dimensional (potential) vorticity-conserved systems

We employ the phase synchronization concept, which is universally adopted to study collective dynamics in many-body systems, to investigate the formation mechanism of coherent structure in a two-dimensional (potential) vorticity conserved system. It is shown that the gradient of mean (potential) vorticity can mediate ``attractive'' coupling among local vortex excitations, so that the vortices get synchronized and a large coherent structure then forms. The phase synchronization concept develops a method for studying self-organization processes in fluid turbulence.

Measurement and simulation of non-premixed flames: A selected review

Non-premixed flames are encountered in different combustion facilities. Experimental and numerical studies of non-premixed flames have been made by many investigators, but only a few works reported simultaneous experimental and numerical studies on instantaneous flows and flame structures. In this paper, a review is given for studies on the instantaneous flow and flame structures of non-premixed flames using both particle image velocimetry (PIV) and large-eddy simulation (LES) by us. The LES statistical results are accessed by measurement results. The measured and simulated instantaneous results show the strong interaction between coherent structures and combustion. It is found that larger secondary-air flow leads to early formation of coherent structures and the transition from large vortexes to small vortices. The flame structures are significantly affected by the coherent structures. The spiral vortex structures formed by swirl lead to intensification of combustion

Solar Wind Turbulence Outlined Through Magnetic Islands and Nonlinear Waves

Various space missions and observations over the past decades have provided unexampled details about the nature of solar wind, the acceleration mechanism, and different nonlinear phenomena responsible for energy transfer and turbulence in the interplanetary space. This review focuses on the role of Alfvénic fluctuations—both kinetic Alfvén wave (KAW) and dispersive Alfvén wave (DAW)—in driving solar wind turbulence and magnetic reconnection at 1 AU. The process of filamentation has been studied through a nonlinear coupling system of KAW/IAW (ion acoustic wave) and relatively high-frequency pump KAW (HKAW, i.e., frequency less than ion cyclotron frequency) in the presence of LKAW (low-frequency KAW, i.e., frequency very much less then ion cyclotron frequency) perturbation by formulating their dynamical equations in the presence of ponderomotive force and using the numerical results for the same. A simplified model is presented to have a deeper insight into the evolution pattern using the results of simulation. The formation of coherent structures and current sheets using a numerical and semi-analytical approach is elaborated near the magnetic reconnection sites. In addition to this, the relevance of the generated turbulence is also depicted through the energy spectrum by examining the spectral index which is noticeable in determining the energy cascade down to smaller scales.

Complexity of modulation instability

The authors study the computational complexity of modulation instability of light waves propagating through an optical fiber, and show that this statistical tool provides insights into the formation of coherent structures from noise, and into the nonlinear dynamics of the system.

Dust Acoustic Dressed Solitons in Jovian Magnetosphere

In this investigation, the evolution of dust acoustic solitons (DASs) and dust acoustic dressed solitons (DADSs) have been examined in the Jovian magnetosphere. A five components plasma in which positive dust grains interact with solar wind protons, superthermally distributed electrons, ions as well as solar wind electrons is considered to explore the formation of different kinds of nonlinear structures in the Jovian magnetosphere. The Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) and inhomogenous KdV-type equations encompassing the higher-order (HO) nonlinear and dispersion (N&D) effects are derived by employing the reductive perturbation technique (RPT). With the incorporation of HO effects, a new kind of DADSs are evolved. The influence of various plasma parameters viz., superthermality of ions as well as electrons, temperature, and concentration of different species on the salient features of DASs and DADSs has been encapsulated. The findings of this work may be useful to elucidate the formation of nonlinear dust acoustic coherent structures in the Jovian magnetosphere.

Characterization of two-way coupled thermovibrationally driven particle attractee

Following the recent identification of a new category of thermovibrationally driven particle attractors in dilute fluid–particle systems [M. Lappa, “The patterning behaviour and accumulation of spherical particles in a vibrated non-isothermal liquid,” Phys. Fluids 26(9), 093301 (2014); M. Lappa, “On the formation and morphology of coherent particulate structures in non-isothermal enclosures subjected to rotating g-jitters,” Phys. Fluids 31(7), 073303 (2019); and M. Lappa and T. Burel, “Symmetry breaking phenomena in thermovibrationally driven particle accumulation structures,” Phys. Fluids 32(5), 053314 (2020)], some effort is provided here to develop an integrated framework able to encompass earlier discoveries and account for new effects in a single treatment. In particular, we examine the alterations (“corrugation”) that can be induced in the geometrically perfect particle structures pertaining to this class of phenomena as the percentage of dispersed solid mass is progressively increased. The related dynamics are explored within the framework of a two-way coupled model with respect to several parameters (solid mass load, density ratio, frequency, and amplitude of the imposed vibrations). Ensuing results are interpreted by separating instantaneous and time-averaged contributions and using some ideas borrowed from the companion theory of bifurcations. We show that the back influence of particles on the carrier flow can lead to a variety of possible paths of evolution. While in some cases the original attractee can be overshadowed by particle-induced turbulence, in other circumstances new aggregates with heretofore unseen morphology show up.

Coherent Structures at the Interface between Water Masses of Confluent Rivers

The paper presents the results of field measurements and numerical modeling of the influence of various factors on the formation of coherent structures in the confluence zone of the Sylva and Chusovaya rivers, which are dammed by the Kamskaya Hydroelectric Power Station (HPS). A characteristic feature of the measured parameters in the zone under study is that they experience both seasonal fluctuations and fluctuations of much higher frequency associated with intraday regulation of the HPS operation. These intraday fluctuations give rise to coherent structures with periodicity T~2–10 min, which manifest themselves in the fluctuations of the specific electrical conductivity of water. The flow velocity also experiences significant fluctuations with a sufficiently wide frequency spectrum, although the characteristic period of its fluctuations is less than the period of electrical conductivity fluctuations and is equal to ~1 min. In order to study the features of the formation of such structures, numerical simulation was carried out within the framework of the three-dimensional approach. Calculations were performed for a 300-meter-long stretch of the Chusovaya River, which is located downstream of the confluence of Chusovaya and Sylva rivers and is the site of the Chusovskoy water intake of Perm city. It was found that the intraday irregularity of HPS operation gives rise to the occurrence of vortex structures in this layer, leading to the temporal variation of concentration at a given point of space and the formation of the wave structure of the concentration field at different moments of time. Time period and spatial scale of such vortex structures depend on the ratio of velocities of water masses and difference in their mineralization and, accordingly, in densities. Moreover, the period of fluctuations is proportional to the ratio of flow velocities. These estimations are of fundamental importance for the implementation of stable selective intake of water with required consumer properties under conditions of intraday irregularity of hydroelectric power station operation.
