Using a series of novel flash-freezing experiments, the formation mechanism of free-standing, paper-like materials produced by vacuum-assisted self-assembly (VASA) of graphene oxide (GO) suspension has been elucidated. A stop-motion animation of the VASA process is created, showing highly ordered, hierarchically structured GO papers to have evolved via an intermediate self-supporting phase formed by successive sheet aggregation processes at increasing length scales.
