The Impact of Horse-Assisted Therapy on Socio-Emotional Behaviors in Children with Autism

Animal-assisted therapy for children with autism (ASD) is a form of complementary therapy, integrating methods from various other types of therapy. AAT, or animal-assisted therapy, is a series of interventions that are based on the behavioral traits of animals, especially dogs and horses, which are the most common in this context. These interventions can be integrated into conventional treatments such as behavioral therapy, play therapy, music therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and art therapy, depending on the individual needs of patients. The objective of this study was to examine the effects of an already existing Equine Assisted Therapy (EAT) program on social communication skills, executive functions and motor skills in children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders. The research adopted an observational design to analyze how often certain behaviors occur in the presence or absence of horses in a group intervention program. This research included 16 children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), aged between 9 and 14 years (12 boys and 4 girls), who were selected from an School Center for Inclusive Education. The conclusions drawn from our results showed that the horse-assisted therapy, implemented in our experiment, recorded a notable improvement in all the behavioral parameters analyzed. Improvements were observed in Attention in Activity (21.2%), Communication (18.3%) and Compliance (9.1%) during activities, Physical Movements, with a difference of 34.1%, Affective State (23.33%), Visual Control (45%), Functional Skills and Response to Command (46.66%), Social Attention (33.5%) and Dynamic Motor Skills (35.55%) during activities. And the biggest difference was observed in Vocalizations, with a difference of 53%. Our results strongly support the fact that complementary therapy of autism spectrum disorders with the help of horses is an effective form of intervention, which can bring substantial improvements in therapeutic outcomes.

Massage Therapy for Infant Temperaments: An Intervention Study

A form of complementary therapy, infant massage, has the potential to ameliorate difficult infant temperaments and transform them into easier ones. This study aimed to ascertain the impact of newborn massage therapy on infants' temperament. A total of 102 participants were divided into two groups for this quasi-experimental study using a pretest and posttest. Over the length of five weeks, twice each week, the experimental groups received ten-time massages in total. A generalized estimating equation (GEE) was applied to the data. This study discovered that infant massage improved the temperament in the experimental group from difficult to easy, a result that was mirrored in the control group. Infants may develop a more positive temperament through the utilization of infant massage therapy. Healthcare professionals are required to provide a thorough understanding of the physiological and psychological growth of infants, placing special attention on strategies that promote a positive temperament.

Konseling Terapi Komplementer Pada Masyarakat Saat Pandemi Covid 19

The covid-19 pandemic certainly has had many unusual impacts and influences on people's lives, one of which is the difficulty of health consultations during a pandemic. This community service aims to help the community to find solutions to their health problems in the form of complementary therapies. Complemen-tary therapies are needed by the community as a complement to medical treatment and are easy to do during the covid-19 pandemic. This community service activity was carried out in the area of ​​RT 005 RW 007, Ragajaya Village, Bojong Gede District, Bogor Regency, West Answer. The activity was carried out in three stages including data collection or assessment, initial information through WhatsApp Groups and counseling. Counseling is carried out with due regard to health protocols. The results of the service found that after counseling the majority of participants had good knowledge of complementary therapies, 45 people (82%). It is recommended for health workers to routinely provide health counseling and the community to keep trying to live a healthy life by applying complementary therapy as a complement to medical therapy.

The effect of active visual art therapy on health outcomes: protocol of a systematic review of randomised controlled trials

BackgroundArt therapy is a form of complementary therapy to treat a wide variety of health problems. Existing studies examining the effects of art therapy differ substantially regarding content and setting of the intervention, as well as their included populations, outcomes, and methodology. The aim of this review is to evaluate the overall effectiveness of active visual art therapy, used across different treatment indications and settings, on various patient outcomes.MethodsWe will include randomised controlled studies with an active art therapy intervention, defined as any form of creative expression involving a medium (such as paint etc.) to be actively applied or shaped by the patient in an artistic or expressive form, compared to any type of control. Any treatment indication and patient group will be included. A systematic literature search of the Cochrane Library, EMBASE (via Ovid), MEDLINE (via Ovid), CINAHL, ERIC, APA PsycArticles, APA PsycInfo, and PSYNDEX (all via EBSCOHost), ClinicalTrials.gov and the WHO’s International Clinical Trials Registry Platform (ICTRP) will be conducted. Psychological, cognitive, somatic and economic outcomes will be used. Based on the number, quality and outcome heterogeneity of the selected studies, a meta-analysis might be conducted, or the data synthesis will be performed narratively only. Heterogeneity will be assessed by calculating the p-value for the chi2 test and the I2 statistic. Subgroup analyses and meta-regressions are planned.DiscussionThis systematic review will provide a concise overview of current knowledge of the effectiveness of art therapy. Results have the potential to (1) inform existing treatment guidelines and clinical practice decisions, (2) provide insights to the therapy’s mechanism of change, and (3) generate hypothesis that can serve as a starting point for future randomised controlled studies.Systematic review registrationPROSPERO ID CRD42021233272

Effect of therapeutic touch on daytime sleepiness, stress and fatigue among students of nursing and midwifery: A randomized sham-controlled trial

ObjectivesThis study was conducted to assess the effect of therapeutic touch on stress, daytime sleepiness, sleep quality and fatigue among students of nursing and midwifery. Methods96 students were randomized into three groups: the therapeutic touch (TT) group, the sham therapeutic touch (STT) group, and the control group. In this randomized sham-controlled study, the TT group was subjected to therapeutic touch twice a week for four weeks with each session lasting 20 min. ResultsWhen the TT group was compared to the STT and control groups following the intervention, the decrease in the levels of stress (p < 0.001), fatigue (p < 0.001) and daytime sleepiness (p < 0.001), and the increase in the sleep quality (p < 0.001) were found to be significant. ConclusionIt was found that TT, which is one form of complementary therapy, was relatively effective in decreasing the levels of stress, fatigue and daytime sleepiness, and in increasing the sleep quality of university students of nursing and midwifery.

Phytotherapy in obstetrics - therapeutic indications, limits, and dangers.

The wide access to varied, attractive, and aggressively promoted information can induce pregnant women to think that any form of complementary therapy can be a saving solution for a medical problem because these therapies are natural, therefore, harmless. Updated information from literature about indications, benefits, limits, and risks of phytotherapy in pregnancy was presented. Valuable therapeutic resources with proven clinical efficacy (evidence-based medicine) were presented for each trimester of pregnancy, during labor, postpartum, but also during breastfeeding. For some phytotherapeutics, there are scientific studies. There is also a detailed presentation about some possibilities for therapeutic errors, which should be avoided during pregnancy. Positive results of phytotherapy deserve to be known and applied by the obstetrician for the certain benefit of future mothers.

The Effectivity of Tomato and Guava Combination Juice and Guava Juice Administration on Blood Glucose Level in Patients with Type II Diabetes Mellitus

This study aims to determine the effectivity of tomato and guava juice combination with guava juice on blood glucose levels of patients with type II diabetes mellitus in the work area of Kuranji Padang Health Center in 2019. This quasi-experimental study used a pretest-posttest design with a control group. The population of this study was all patients with type II diabetes mellitus in the working area of Kuranji Health Center, Padang City. Sampling is done by purposive sampling. The number of samples was 24 people, divided into treatment groups and a control group. The data obtained were analyzed by two different dependent tests and an independent t-test. The results of statistical tests showed that there were significant differences between the average decrease in fasting blood glucose levels of respondents who were given tomato and guava combination juice with respondents who were given guava juice (p = 0,026). People with diabetes mellitus are expected to consume tomato and guava combination juice as a form of complementary therapy.

La terapia asistida con perros en el tratamiento de las personas con dolor crónico: una revisión sistemática

Objective: Animal-assisted therapy is used in various ways to improve the quality of life of people with chronic pain. The aim of this work was to conduct a systematic review of the literature, and summarize what is known about this form of complementary therapy. Methods: A search was conducted in the following databases MEDLINE (via PubMed), CINAHL, PsycINFO, Web of Science Core Collection, Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection, since its inception until January 2016. Results: A total of 179 items were found, and 135 were reviewed for potential inclusion in this study. Finally, we have included 7 articles. The results of the studies reported in these articles show that, in general, people who have participated in animal-assisted therapy report lower pain intensity, improved mood and overall better quality of life. Published reports do not provide detailed information about the type of intervention being used, nor its specific components, thus offering little possibility of replication. Conclusions: Reviewed studies show positive results, however these are based on poor designs. Future research with greater rigor and control is warranted. Future publications need to provide better descriptions of the interventions that are used, this is critical to identify which variables are ultimately responsible for the beneficial effects that are being reported.

A Case Study of Modern Medical Practice and Islamic Complementary Therapy on a Patient with Over 2000 Embedded Nails

&lt;p&gt;In South East Asia, patients often resort to various forms of complementary therapy apart from utilizing mainstream modern medicine in Hospitals. Islamic-based complementary therapy employs various forms of bio-physical, psychological, social, cultural, and spiritual interventional methods based on the prevailing belief and cultural system to provide a holistic &lt;em&gt;Syariah&lt;/em&gt; compliant approach in patient management. The concept of diseases caused by sorcery and paranormal means using intermediaries like Jinn and evil spirits that have been in existence since time immemorial across religions, cultures and societies around the world, for example, Homer in Ancient Greece, the legendary Medea, and Witch of Endor in the Bible. Currently, the practice of black magic and the belief in the paranormal still widely exist in the midst of modern civilization in this region. Modern medical practice has no definitive answer for a person with an unusual medical illness who is believed to have been afflicted by black magic because of its non-specific clinical presentation and non-response to conventional management paradigm which defies medical logic. In this paper, we describe a true case of a lady, 25 years-of-age, who suffered from more than 2000 nails embedded inside her body for one and a half years. Upon admission to a Hospital in Indonesia, she underwent a surgical procedure to remove all of the nails but to no avail; the nails re-appeared at other parts of her body. The surgical team later decided to conduct an Islamic complementary therapy on the patient, and subsequently, managed to extract all of the remaining nails without further bleeding. In conclusion, unusual or mysterious medical illness, sometimes referred to as idiopathic in etiology, not responding to conventional medical or surgical intervention, may potentially benefit from the use of Islamic complementary therapy.&lt;/p&gt;

A retrospective review of acupuncture use for the treatment of pain in sickle cell disease patients: descriptive analysis from a single institution.

This retrospective study describes the use of acupuncture for adult sickle cell patients in a single institution. We identified 47 sickle cell disease patients referred for acupuncture at the National Institutes of Health between January 2005 and September 2011. All patients were enrolled in a Study of the Natural History of sickle cell disease and signed consent. We reviewed patient demographics, location of acupuncture treatment sessions (inpatient vs. outpatient), number of sessions received, sites of pain, patient pain reporting, and the use of other complementary therapies. Of the 47 patients (60% women, median age 36 y) referred for acupuncture, 42 had homozygous SS disease (89%) and 5 had SC disease (11%). Over half of the patients (51%) reported >3 sites of pain. Only 24 patients (51%) underwent acupuncture treatment. Of those who elected not to receive acupuncture, a majority (87%) accepted some other forms of complementary therapies. Nine patients underwent only inpatient acupuncture for acute vaso-occlusive crisis. Eleven patients received only outpatient acupuncture treatment for chronic pain, and 4 patients received both inpatient and outpatient treatments. For the patients who received inpatient acupuncture treatment for acute vaso-occlusive crisis, there was a significant reduction of reported pain score immediately after acupuncture treatment with an average pain reduction of 2.1 points on the numeric pain scale (P<0.0001). Excluding the 2 outliers, 75% of patients (n=13) in the outpatient setting described their pain as improved compared with prior session. To our knowledge, this is the largest retrospective review of acupuncture use in the sickle cell population. This analysis describes the use of acupuncture and raises the possibility of its use as an adjuvant for pain management in this population. Future clinical trials are needed to evaluate acupuncture's efficacy and effectiveness for pain management in different treatment settings and for various types of pain etiologies among the sickle cell population.

No immediate haemodynamic effect of reflexology in CAD

Reflexology is one of the most popular forms of complementary therapy in the UK and cardiac patients are seeking reflexology treatment. This study measured the immediate haemodynamic effects of reflexology treatment applied to specific areas of the feet (which are thought to correspond to the heart) in patients with coronary artery disease, and compared this with treatment applied to other areas that are not. This study found no acute (immediate) specific changes in any of the haemodynamic parameters measured. While long-term treatment effects are uncertain, the results indicate that reflexology is safe for use by patients with coronary artery disease.

The pharmacists and homeopathy.

Under these conditions, the ethical role of the pharmacist is to give accurate, impartial information regarding the homeopathic therapy, the current scientific proof on their therapeutic effects, including the placebo effect. This, doubled by a comprehensive, objective presentation of the options of medication-based treatment, guarantee pharmacists a clean reputation as competent authorities in the pharmaceutical field.

Feasibility study of nonclinical safety assessments on homeopathic preparations using the example of protoanemonin in Pulsatilla pratensis L.

Homeopathy is a world-wide available form of complementary therapy, which has a tradition of 200years. Due to the long history of clinical use, i.e. reflected by the first edition of the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the US of 1914, the conduct of toxicological studies is not required if the safety has been otherwise substantiated. The aim of this article is to establish a risk assessment procedure without full toxicological examination, using homeopathic preparations from Pulsatilla pratensis L. as an example. The literature review shows that protoanemonin is the most relevant constituent of these plants regarding potential toxicity. Based on structural alerts protoanemonin is classified as a Cramer class III compound with the threshold of toxicological concern (TTC) of 180μg/day in adults. Neither computer aided toxicology methods (Toxtree and Derek Nexus®) nor a literature search revealed any evidence of genotoxic, carcinogenic or teratogenic potential of protoanemonin. The protoanemonin exposure from a maximum daily dose of a typical homeopathic preparation of P. pratensis L. does not exceed the TTC. The presented method is transparent, reproducible and applicable to other homeopathic substances as a use-case scenario for computational toxicology in order to evaluate an approach for safety assessment of homeopathic medicinal products.

Profile for use of herbal medicines in the municipalities of Volta Redonda and Barra Mansa/RJ

Herbal constitute a form of complementary therapy on health needs. Their use has grown in population in several countries, including Brazil, where the federal government encourages the use of herbal treatments in the public health system. Given the current scenario of the search for natural treatments, this study aimed to characterize the use of herbal medicines in the districts of Barra Mansa and Volta Redonda/RJ. The expectation is that the information gathered will assist municipal actions for the implementation of herbal medicine in public health. It was observed that most herbal medicines marketed is sold by prescription. The acquisition focuses on monodrogas anxiolytic action, with the Passiflora incarnata L. present in 14,29 % of the marketed formulations. The inserts of the highest-selling herbal medicines contain legal wording regulated by ANVISA. Among the users interviewed, 70% reported using herbal medicines, mostly female (68%), without having a specific economic pattern, aged 19 and 30 years, with a degree of complete or incomplete higher education. Of these, 31% use herbal or prescription for self medication and believe that herbal medicines are not toxic, can make good health.

The Place of Complementary Therapies in an Integrated Model of Refugee Health Care: Counsellors' and Refugee Clients' Perspectives

This paper explores the place of complementary therapies in an integrated model of refugee health care at Foundation House, a leading torture and trauma rehabilitation service in Melbourne, Australia. At Foundation House counselling and complementary therapies are practised collaboratively. The paper is based on two independent qualitative research projects: one project examined refugee women’s experiences of complementary therapies and the second investigated counsellors’ reasons for referral to complementary therapies. The rationale for combining the two research projects in this paper is to provide a comprehensive overview of this integrative model of health care that has not previously been documented. We formulate the areas of commonality in our findings under three ‘modes of action’: relationship, cultural familiarity and somatic presentations. Our combined findings extend current notions of holistic refugee health care to include culturally familiar health care practices in the form of complementary therapies. These therapies give primacy to caring for the complexity that is the ‘refugee body’: the amalgamation of physical pain with the complex social, political and cultural factors that define the refugee experience.

Complementary Therapy Use Among Racial/Ethnic Groups

It is likely that a significant proportion of patients seen by primary care providers, including NPs, are using some form of complementary therapies (CTs). While it is tempting to assume that the most likely CT consumer is a non-Hispanic White female, over age 40 with higher education, data indicate that CT usage occurs broadly across racial/ethnic (RE) and socioeconomic groups.1 While CT use is impacted by disposable income for products and services, geographic access to services, and access to information, decisions to use CT also depend upon social networks and family history. For example, African Americans and Hispanics are more likely to use CTs based upon recommendation from friends and family, whereas non-Hispanic White users rely on multiple sources for information about CAM including media and the Internet as well as social networks. The type of CAM modality utilized often relates to cultural patterns within the family. There is greater use of acupuncture, green tea, and soy products among Asian Americans, while Hispanics tend to use a greater number of herbal products.2 Thus, a person's propensity for CT use is informed by the explanatory framework of their cultural heritage and how closely their family of origin adheres to cultural practices. One survey of a culturally diverse sample of women found the most important factor in choosing natural approaches to health was congruency with their personal belief systems.3 Dissatisfaction with conventional medicine, such as bothersome side-effects, was more of a factor in choosing a CAM approach than was cost of conventional medical care, except for Hispanic women. And, patients across racial/ethnic groups experiencing a serious or chronic illness, such as cancer, are more likely to utilize a CAM modality.2 Our recent study of 39 African American and Mexican-origin cancer survivors found that about half (49%) reported using CAM during their cancer treatment, mostly in the form of vitamins, juices, or herbal teas. Only three women had visited a CAM practitioner (acupuncture, homeopathy, and Tradition Chinese Medicine). Of the 51% who did not use CAM, most stated their reason was fear of harmful interactions with chemotherapy. Spanish-speaking Mexican immigrants (N = 15) were the least likely to use a CAM approach, even though they had the lowest income levels and lacked health insurance. They cited fear of interference with conventional cancer treatment and instruction by the oncologist not to take home remedies. Of the women who were using natural health products, half had discussed it with their oncologist and half did not due to the belief that the provider would not endorse it. This is consistent with an abundant body of literature that counsels health care providers about the need to continually ask about the use of complementary therapies and other forms of healing that patients might be participating in.

Effectiveness of applying progressive muscle relaxation technique on quality of life of patients with multiple sclerosis

To identify the effects of applying Progressive Muscle Relaxation Technique on Quality of Life of patients with multiple Sclerosis. In view of the growing caring options in Multiple Sclerosis, improvement of quality of life has become increasingly relevant as a caring intervention. Complementary therapies are widely used by multiple sclerosis patients and Progressive Muscle Relaxation Technique is a form of complementary therapies. Quasi-experimental study. Multiple Sclerosis patients (n = 66) were selected with no probability sampling then assigned to experimental and control groups (33 patients in each group). Means of data collection included: Individual Information Questionnaire, SF-8 Health Survey, Self-reported checklist. PMRT performed for 63 sessions by experimental group during two months but no intervention was done for control group. Statistical analysis was done by SPSS software. Student t-test showed that there was no significant difference between two groups in mean scores of health-related quality of life before the study but this test showed a significant difference between two groups, one and two months after intervention (p < 0.05). anova test with repeated measurements showed that there is a significant difference in mean score of whole and dimensions of health-related quality of life between two groups in three times (p < 0.05). Although this study provides modest support for the effectiveness of Progressive Muscle Relaxation Technique on quality of life of multiple sclerosis patients, further research is required to determine better methods to promote quality of life of patients suffer multiple sclerosis and other chronic disease. Progressive Muscle Relaxation Technique is practically feasible and is associated with increase of life quality of multiple sclerosis patients; so that health professionals need to update their knowledge about complementary therapies.
