Error Analysis and Accuracy Improvement in Forest Canopy Height Estimation Based on GEDI L2A Product: A Case Study in the United States

Various error factors influence the inversion of forest canopy height using GEDI full-waveform LiDAR data, and the interaction of these factors impacts the accuracy of forest canopy height estimation. From an error perspective, there is still a lack of methods to fully correct the impact of various error factors on the retrieval of forest canopy height from GEDI. From the modeling perspective, establishing clear coupling models between various environments, collection parameters, and GEDI forest canopy height errors is challenging. Understanding the comprehensive impact of various environments and collection parameters on the accuracy of GEDI data is crucial for extracting high-quality and precise forest canopy heights. First, we quantitatively assessed the accuracy of GEDI L2A data in forest canopy height inversion and conducted an error analysis. A GEDI forest canopy height error correction model has been developed, taking into account both forest density and terrain effects. This study elucidated the influence of forest density and terrain on the error in forest canopy height estimation, ultimately leading to an improvement in the accuracy of forest canopy height inversion. In light of the identified error patterns, quality control criteria for GEDI footprints are formulated, and a correction model for GEDI forest canopy height is established to achieve high-precision inversion. We selected 19 forest areas located in the United States with high-accuracy Digital Terrain Models (DTMs) and Canopy Height Models (CHMs) to analyze the error factors of GEDI forest canopy heights and assess the proposed accuracy improvement for GEDI forest canopy heights. The findings reveal a decrease in the corrected RMSE value of forest canopy height from 5.60 m to 4.19 m, indicating a 25.18% improvement in accuracy.

Estimation of canopy height based on multi-source remote sensing data using forest structure aided sample selection

ABSTRACT Forest canopy height data are crucial for estimating forest carbon storage and assessing forest ecology. By utilizing satellite imagery, canopy height data obtained from airborne or spaceborne LiDAR have been expanded from footprint and plot levels to spatially continuous elevation mapping of forests. However, current research suggests that estimating forest canopy height without forest type data presents a challenge in how to effectively integrate multi-source LiDAR data and ensure the samples adequately represent various forest types for higher estimation accuracy. Therefore, this study proposes a forest canopy height estimation method that considers forest structure and integrates multi-source LiDAR data to overcome the challenge. First, a stratified sampling method based on forest structure (SSMFS) was proposed to select training samples and enhance their representativeness. Second, we combined GEDI and ATL08 data to create a multi-source spaceborne LiDAR dataset, enhancing geographic coverage and increasing canopy height samples. Third, the spaceborne LiDAR-based canopy height estimation model incorporates previously unconsidered canopy openness features and uses SSMFS to select training samples. Finally, we improved spaceborne LiDAR canopy height accuracy by creating a residual correction model that adjusts for differences between airborne scanner (ALS) and spaceborne LiDAR estimates. This study, conducted in Zhangwu County, achieved an accuracy of R2 = 0.71, MAE = 1.20 m, and RMSE = 1.71 m. These results show a 51.06% increase in R2, a 26.38% decrease in MAE, and a 24.00% decrease in RMSE compared to recent research. In summary, this study profoundly amplifies predictive accuracy, providing a clear advantage in the delineation of regional forest canopy maps.

High-density forest AGB estimation in tropical forest integrated with PolInSAR multidimensional features and optimized machine learning algorithms

Accurately estimating the above-ground biomass (AGB) of high-density tropical rainforests is a challenging issue. In this study, airborne multi-baseline PolInSAR data were used to estimate the tropical rainforest AGB in Gabon, Africa. The most suitable baseline combination of the PolInSAR data was initially determined through baseline selection, and the PolInSAR parameters related to forest height were obtained based on the forest canopy height estimation theory and microwave penetration depth theory. The height parameter, baseline parameter, and observation geometry parameter were then used as independent variables to construct the AGB regression model. Support vector regression (SVR) was chosen as the AGB estimation model, and the global best particle swarm algorithm (GLB-PSO) was used to optimize the SVR model’s parameters. The results show that the RFECV variable selection method is superior to the Pearson method. The GLB-PSO algorithm can also further improve the saturation point of the SVR model—the estimation results show that the saturation point of AGB estimation of PolInSAR multidimensional features combined with the SVR machine learning algorithm is up to 500 Mg/ha, while this saturation point can be increased to 650 Mg/ha when using the GLB-PSO-SVR algorithm.

Forest Canopy Height Estimation by Integrating Structural Equation Modeling and Multiple Weighted Regression

As an important component of forest parameters, forest canopy height is of great significance to the study of forest carbon stocks and carbon cycle status. There is an increasing interest in obtaining large-scale forest canopy height quickly and accurately. Therefore, many studies have aimed to address this issue by proposing machine learning models that accurately invert forest canopy height. However, most of the these approaches feature PolSAR observations from a data-driven viewpoint in the feature selection part of the machine learning model, without taking into account the intrinsic mechanisms of PolSAR polarization observation variables. In this work, we evaluated the correlations between eight polarization observation variables, namely, T11, T22, T33, total backscattered power (SPAN), radar vegetation index (RVI), the surface scattering component (Ps), dihedral angle scattering component (Pd), and body scattering component (Pv) of Freeman-Durden three-component decomposition, and the height of the forest canopy. On this basis, a weighted inversion method for determining forest canopy height under the view of structural equation modeling was proposed. In this study, the direct and indirect contributions of the above eight polarization observation variables to the forest canopy height inversion task were estimated based on structural equation modeling. Among them, the indirect contributions were generated by the interactions between the variables and ultimately had an impact on the forest canopy height inversion. In this study, the covariance matrix between polarization variables and forest canopy height was calculated based on structural equation modeling, the weights of the variables were calculated by combining with the Mahalanobis distance, and the weighted inversion of forest canopy height was carried out using PSO-SVR. In this study, some experiments were carried out using three Gaofen-3 satellite (GF-3) images and ICESat-2 forest canopy height data for some forest areas of Gaofeng Ridge, Baisha Lizu Autonomous County, Hainan Province, China. The results showed that T11, T33, and total backscattered power (SPAN) are highly correlated with forest canopy height. In addition, this study showed that determining the weights of different polarization observation variables contributes positively to the accurate estimation of forest canopy height. The forest canopy height-weighted inversion method proposed in this paper was shown to be superior to the multiple regression model, with a 26% improvement in r and a 0.88 m reduction in the root-mean-square error (RMSE).

Forest Height Inversion by Combining Single-Baseline TanDEM-X InSAR Data with External DTM Data

Forest canopy height estimation is essential for forest management and biomass estimation. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the capacity of TanDEM-X interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) data to estimate canopy height with the assistance of an external digital terrain model (DTM). A ground-to-volume ratio estimation model was proposed so that the canopy height could be precisely estimated from the random-volume-over-ground (RVoG) model. We also refined the RVoG inversion process with the relationship between the estimated penetration depth (PD) and the phase center height (PCH). The proposed method was tested by TanDEM-X InSAR data acquired over relatively homogenous coniferous forests (Teruel test site) and coniferous as well as broadleaved forests (La Rioja test site) in Spain. Comparing the TanDEM-X-derived height with the LiDAR-derived height at plots of size 50 m × 50 m, the root-mean-square error (RMSE) was 1.71 m (R2 = 0.88) in coniferous forests of Teruel and 1.97 m (R2 = 0.90) in La Rioja. To demonstrate the advantage of the proposed method, existing methods based on ignoring ground scattering contribution, fixing extinction, and assisting with simulated spaceborne LiDAR data were compared. The impacts of penetration and terrain slope on the RVoG inversion were also evaluated. The results show that when a DTM is available, the proposed method has the optimal performance on forest height estimation.

Improving Forest Canopy Height Estimation Using a Semi-Empirical Approach to Overcome TomoSAR Phase Errors

Forest canopy height is an important forest indicator parameter. Synthetic aperture radar tomography (TomoSAR) is an effective method to characterize forest canopy height and describe forest 3D structure; however, the residual phase error of TomoSAR affects the focus of the relative reflectance and can lead to errors in forest canopy height estimation. Therefore, this paper proposes a semi-empirical method to overcome the residual phase effects on forest canopy height estimation. In this study, we used airborne multi-baseline UAVSAR data to estimate forest canopy height via TomoSAR techniques and applied a semi-empirical method to improve forest canopy height estimation without phase calibration to mitigate the effects of phase error. The process is divided into three stages: the first step uses a semi-empirical method to initially determine the optimal relative reflectance loss threshold (K) by excluding the inverse extremes; in the second and third steps, the percentile height was used to gradually reduce the height interval between the upper and lower envelopes to minimize overestimation of extreme values and the lower vegetation. When the root mean square error (RMSE) was minimized, the percentile combinations were determined between the inversion results and a LiDAR dataset of the area. The results show that the canopy height estimation results are not satisfactory when relying solely on the K value to estimate the height difference between the envelope at the top of the forest and the ground; the best result was obtained when K = 0.4, but the corresponding R2 value was only 0.13, and the RMSE was 15.23 m. In our proposed method, the K value is determined as 0.3 by excluding the extreme values of the inversion result in the initial step—the corresponding R2 and RMSE values were 0.59 and 10.73 m, respectively, representing an RMSE decrease of 29.54% relative to the initial K value. After two steps of correction overestimation, the inversion accuracy was significantly improved with an R2 value of 0.65 and an RMSE of 9.69 m, corresponding to an RMSE decrease of 36.38%. Overall, the findings of the study represent an important reference for optimizing future spaceborne TomoSAR forest canopy height estimates.

Comparison of GEDI LiDAR Data Capability for Forest Canopy Height Estimation over Broadleaf and Needleleaf Forests

The GEDI LiDAR system was specifically designed to detect vegetation structure and has proven to be a suitable tool for estimating forest biophysical parameters, especially canopy height, at a global scale. This study compares the GEDI relative height metric (RH100) over different forest types, especially deciduous broadleaf and evergreen coniferous located in Thuringia, Germany, to understand how the forest structural differences affect the GEDI height estimation. A canopy height model that was produced using digital terrain and surface models (DTM and DSM) derived from airborne laser scanning data is used as the reference data. Based on the result, GEDI canopy height over needleleaf forest is slightly more accurate (RMSE = 6.61 m) than that over broadleaf (RMSE = 8.30 m) and mixed (RMSE = 7.94 m) forest. Evaluation of the GEDI acquisition parameters shows that differences in beam type, sensitivity, and acquisition time do not significantly affect the accuracy of canopy heights, especially over needleleaf forests. Considering foliage condition impacts on canopy height estimation, the contrasting result is observed in the broadleaf and needleleaf forests. The GEDI dataset acquired during the winter when deciduous species shed their leaves (the so-called leaf-off dataset), outperforms the leaf-on dataset in the broadleaf forest but shows less accurate results for the needleleaf forest. Considering the effect of the plant area index (PAI) on the accuracy of the GEDI canopy height, the GEDI dataset is divided into two sets with low and high PAI values with a threshold of median PAI = 2. The results show that the low PAI dataset (median PAI < 2) corresponds to the non-growing season (autumn and winter) in the broadleaf forest. The slightly better performance of GEDI using the non-growing dataset (RMSE = 7.40 m) compared to the growing dataset (RMSE = 8.44 m) in the deciduous broadleaf forest and vice versa, the slightly better result using the growing dataset (RMSE = 6.38 m) compared to the non-growing dataset (RMSE = 7.24 m) in the evergreen needleleaf forest is in line with the results using the leaf-off/leaf-on season dataset. Although a slight improvement in canopy height estimation was observed using either the leaf-off or non-growing season dataset for broadleaf forest, and either the leaf-on or growing season dataset for needleleaf forest, the approach of filtering GEDI data based on such seasonal acquisition time is recommended when retrieving canopy height over pure stands of broadleaf or needleleaf species, and the sufficient dataset is available.

A Method for Forest Canopy Height Inversion Based on UAVSAR and Fourier–Legendre Polynomial—Performance in Different Forest Types

Mapping forest canopy height at large regional scales is of great importance for the global carbon cycle. Polarized interferometric synthetic aperture radar is an efficient and irreplaceable remote sensing tool. Developing an efficient and accurate method for forest canopy height estimation is an important issue that needs to be addressed urgently. In this paper, we propose a novel four-stage forest height inversion method based on a Fourier–Legendre polynomial (FLP) with reference to the RVoG three-stage method, using the multi-baseline UAVSAR data from the AfriSAR project as the data source. The third-order FLP is used as the vertical structure function, and a small amount of ground phase and LiDAR canopy height is used as the input to solve and fix the FLP coefficients to replace the exponential function in the RVoG three-stage method. The performance of this method was tested in different forest types (mangrove and inland tropical forests). The results show that: (1) in mangroves with homogeneous forest structure, the accuracy based on the four-stage FLP method is better than that of the RVoG three-stage method. For the four-stage FLP method, R2 is 0.82, RMSE is 6.42 m and BIAS is 0.92 m, while the R2 of the RVoG three-stage method is 0.77, RMSE is 7.33 m, and bias is −3.49 m. In inland tropical forests with complex forest structure, the inversion accuracy based on the four-stage FLP method is lower than that of the RVoG three-stage method. The R2 is 0.50, RMSE is 11.54 m, and BIAS is 6.53 m for the four-stage FLP method; the R2 of the RVoG three-stage method is 0.72, RMSE is 8.68 m, and BIAS is 1.67 m. (2) Compared to the RVoG three-stage method, the efficiency of the four-stage FLP method is improved by about tenfold, with the reduction of model parameters. The inversion time of the FLP method in a mangrove forest is 3 min, and that of the RVoG three-stage method is 33 min. In an inland tropical forest, the inversion time of the FLP method is 2.25 min, and that of the RVoG three-stage method is 21 min. With the application of large regional scale data in the future, the method proposed in this study is more efficient when conditions allow.

Correcting Underestimation and Overestimation in PolInSAR Forest Canopy Height Estimation Using Microwave Penetration Depth

PolInSAR is an active remote sensing technique that is widely used for forest canopy height estimation, with the random volume over ground (RVoG) model being the most classic and effective forest canopy height inversion approach. However, penetration of microwave energy into the forest often leads to a downward shift of the canopy phase center, which leads to model underestimation of the forest canopy height. In addition, in the case of sparse and low forests, the canopy height is overestimated, owing to the large ground-to-volume amplitude ratio in the RVoG model and severe temporal decorrelation effects. To solve this problem, in this study, we conducted an experiment on forest canopy height estimation with the RVoG model using L-band multi-baseline fully polarized PolInSAR data obtained from the Lope and Pongara test areas of the AfriSAR project. We also propose various RVoG model error correction methods based on penetration depth by analyzing the model’s causes of underestimation and overestimation. The results show that: (1) In tall forest areas, there is a general underestimation of canopy height, and the value of this underestimation correlates strongly with the penetration depth, whereas in low forest areas, there is an overestimation of canopy height owing to severe temporal decorrelation; in this instance, overestimation can also be corrected by the penetration depth. (2) Based on the reference height RH100, we used training sample iterations to determine the correction thresholds to correct low canopy overestimation and tall canopy underestimation; by applying these thresholds, the inversion error of the RVoG model can be improved to some extent. The corrected R2 increased from 0.775 to 0.856, and the RMSE decreased from 7.748 m to 6.240 m in the Lope test area. (3) The results obtained using the infinite-depth volume condition p-value as the correction threshold were significantly better than the correction results for the reference height, with the corrected R2 value increasing from 0.775 to 0.914 and the RMSE decreasing from 7.748 m to 4.796 m. (4) Because p-values require a true height input, we extended the application scale of the method by predicting p-values as correction thresholds via machine learning methods and polarized interference features; accordingly, the corrected R2 increased from 0.775 to 0.845, and the RMSE decreased from 7.748 m to 6.422 m. The same pattern was obtained for the Pongara test area. Overall, the findings of this study strongly suggest that it is effective and feasible to use penetration depth to correct for RVoG model errors.

Spatially Continuous Mapping of Forest Canopy Height in Canada by Combining GEDI and ICESat-2 with PALSAR and Sentinel

Continuous large-scale mapping of forest canopy height is crucial for estimating and reporting forest carbon content, analyzing forest degradation and restoration, or to model ecosystem variables such as aboveground biomass. Over the last years, the spaceborne Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) sensor specifically designed to acquire forest structure information, Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI), has been used to extract forest canopy height information over large areas. Yet, GEDI has no spatial coverage for most forested areas in Canada and other high latitude regions. On the other hand, the spaceborne LiDAR called Ice, Cloud, and Land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2) provides a global coverage but was not specially developed to study forested ecosystems. Nonetheless, both spaceborne LiDAR sensors obtain point-based information, making spatially continuous forest canopy height estimation very challenging. This study compared the performance of both spaceborne LiDAR, GEDI and ICESat-2, combined with ALOS-2/PALSAR-2 and Sentinel-1 and -2 data to produce continuous canopy height maps in Canada for the year 2020. A set-aside dataset and airborne LiDAR (ALS) from a national LiDAR campaign were used for accuracy assessment. Both maps overestimated canopy height in relation to ALS data, but GEDI had a better performance than ICESat-2 with a mean difference (MD) of 0.9 m and 2.9 m, and a root mean square error (RMSE) of 4.2 m and 5.2 m, respectively. However, as both GEDI and ALS have no coverage in most of the hemi-boreal forests, ICESat-2 captures the tall canopy heights expected for these forests better than GEDI. PALSAR-2 HV polarization was the most important covariate to predict canopy height, showing the great potential of L-band in comparison to C-band from Sentinel-1 or optical data from Sentinel-2. The approach proposed here can be used operationally to produce annual canopy height maps for areas that lack GEDI and ICESat-2 coverage.

Correction of Terrain Effects on Forest Canopy Height Estimation Using ICESat-2 and High Spatial Resolution Images

The Ice, Cloud, and Land Elevation Satellite–2 (ICESat–2) carries the Advanced Topographic Laser Altimeter System (ATLAS), enabling global canopy height measurements from forest canopy height models (CHMs). Topographic slope is a crucial factor affecting the accuracy of canopy height estimates from ICESat–2 CHMs, but it has not been sufficiently studied. This paper aims to eliminate the influence of slope on canopy height estimates from ICESat–2 data and establishes a method for correcting forest canopy heights based on high spatial resolution digital orthophoto maps (DOM). The cross-track photons are corrected horizontally to eliminate the estimation error. Multi-resolution segmentation is used to segment tree crowns in the DOM, and the distance and relative position between the top of canopy (TOC) photons and the center point of the crown are calculated. TOC photon correction rules are established for different terrains, and the vertical error of the TOC photons is corrected. The results indicate that the vertical error increases exponentially with the slope. The cross-track photon correction and the TOC photon correction method eliminate the effect of slope on canopy height estimates. The cross-track photon correction method reduces the mean absolute error (MAE) and root mean square error (RMSE) of the canopy height estimates by 35.71% and 35.98%, respectively. The TOC photon correction approach further reduces the MAE and RMSE by 23% and 19.23%, respectively. The proposed method has significantly higher accuracy for forest canopy height estimation using ICESat–2 data than the traditional method.

ESTIMATING TREE CANOPY HEIGHT IN DENSELY FOREST-COVERED MOUNTAINOUS AREAS USING GEDI SPACEBORNE FULL-WAVEFORM DATA

Abstract. Tree canopy height is an important parameter for estimating forest carbon stock, and mountainous areas with dense vegetation cover are the main distribution areas of trees, so it is important to accurately measure the forest canopy height in mountainous areas with high vegetation cover. This paper focuses on the problem of poor inversion accuracy of canopy height estimation in large scale densely forest-covered mountainous areas, uses the complex echoes of GEDI full-waveform spaceborne laser in mountainous forests as the data source, improves the accuracy of forest canopy height estimation from multiple perspectives by improving the detection capability of weak and overlapping waves and constructing a canopy height model considering slope correction and environmental features. The results show that the modified RGD algorithm proposed in this paper can effectively detect the weak and overlapping waves in the echoes and improve the DTM/DSM inversion accuracy significantly (FVC>90%, R2=0.8663/R2=0.8073). In addition, the forest canopy height model is constructed on the basis of the physical geometric model of mountain slope and spatial environment characteristics, and finally the canopy height inversion accuracy of this paper is higher (FVC>90%, R2=0.6729). The experiment proves that the model constructed in this paper is not only applicable to densely forest-covered mountainous areas, but also improves the accuracy of forest canopy height inversion in other environments. This study can provide technical and decision support for forest resource survey and global carbon balance.

Forest Canopy Height Mapping by Synergizing ICESat-2, Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2 and Topographic Information Based on Machine Learning Methods

Spaceborne LiDAR has been widely used to obtain forest canopy heights over large areas, but it is still a challenge to obtain spatio-continuous forest canopy heights with this technology. In order to make up for this deficiency and take advantage of the complementary for multi-source remote sensing data in forest canopy height mapping, a new method to estimate forest canopy height was proposed by synergizing the spaceborne LiDAR (ICESat-2) data, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data, multi-spectral images, and topographic data considering forest types. In this study, National Geographical Condition Monitoring (NGCM) data was used to extract the distributions of coniferous forest (CF), broadleaf forest (BF), and mixed forest (MF) in Hua’ nan forest area in Heilongjiang Province, China. Accordingly, the forest canopy height estimation models for whole forest (all forests together without distinguishing types, WF), CF, BF, and MF were established, respectively, by Radom Forest (RF) and Gradient Boosting Decision Tree (GBDT). The accuracy for established models and the forest canopy height obtained based on estimation models were validated consequently. The results showed that the forest canopy height estimation models considering forest types had better performance than the model grouping all types of forest together. Compared with GBDT, RF with optimal variables had better performance in forest canopy height estimation with Pearson’s correlation coefficient (R) and the root-mean-squared error (RMSE) values for CF, BF, and MF of 0.72, 0.59, 0.62, and 3.15, 3.37, 3.26 m, respectively. It has been validated that a synergy of ICESat-2 with other remote sensing data can make a crucial contribution to spatio-continuous forest canopy height mapping, especially for areas covered by different types of forest.

Using GEDI Waveforms for Improved TanDEM-X Forest Height Mapping: A Combined SINC + Legendre Approach

In this paper, we consider a new method for forest canopy height estimation using TanDEM-X single-pass radar interferometry. We exploit available information from sample-based, space-borne LiDAR systems, such as the Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) sensor, which offers high-resolution vertical profiling of forest canopies. To respond to this, we have developed a new extended Fourier-Legendre series approach for fusing high-resolution (but sparsely spatially sampled) GEDI LiDAR waveforms with TanDEM-X radar interferometric data to improve wide-area and wall-to-wall estimation of forest canopy height. Our key methodological development is a fusion of the standard uniform assumption for the vertical structure function (the SINC function) with LiDAR vertical profiles using a Fourier-Legendre approach, which produces a convergent series of approximations of the LiDAR profiles matched to the interferometric baseline. Our results showed that in our test site, the Petawawa Research Forest, the SINC function is more accurate in areas with shorter canopy heights (<~27 m). In taller forests, the SINC approach underestimates forest canopy height, whereas the Legendre approach avails upon simulated GEDI forest structural vertical profiles to overcome SINC underestimation issues. Overall, the SINC + Legendre approach improved canopy height estimates (RMSE = 1.29 m) compared to the SINC approach (RMSE = 4.1 m).

The impact of geolocation uncertainty on GEDI tropical forest canopy height estimation and change monitoring

The Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) LiDAR provides new spaceborne vegetation canopy structural information including relative canopy height products defined with respect to 25 m diameter footprints. The GEDI geolocation requirement is that each 25 m footprint center is horizontally georeferenced to within 10 m (1σ), assuming normally distributed geolocation errors with a 0 m mean and a 10 m standard deviation. The impact of this geolocation uncertainty on the reliability of forest canopy height estimation is examined considering Airborne Laser scanner (ALS) and GEDI data acquired in 2014 and 2019 respectively. A total of 445 GEDI footprints acquired over 2000 ha of unforested and tropical secondary forest in the western Democratic Republic of the Congo with vegetation heights ranging from 1 m to 42 m are considered. Airborne true color 10 cm imagery and an ALS derived canopy height model are examined to contextualize the results. GEDI waveforms are simulated from the ALS data at the reported locations of the GEDI footprints and used to derivehˆ95,hˆ85,hˆ75relative heights that define the canopy height relative to the ground below which 95%, 85% and 75% of the simulated cumulative waveform energy is returned. A Monte Carlo simulation is undertaken, moving the centers of each GEDI footprint with 300 randomly generated position errors modelled using the GEDI geolocation uncertainty (0 m mean, 10 m standard deviation), and each time simulating the GEDI waveform from the ALS data. Relative heights are extracted from the 300 simulated GEDI waveforms and their variation, defined by the 25th and 75th percentiles, and the interquartile range (IQR) (75th - 25th percentiles), are quantified to provide insights into the impact of the GEDI geolocation uncertainty on forest canopy height retrieval. The IQR accounts for 50% of the variation in the forest canopy height due to GEDI geolocation uncertainty. High IQR values, greater than or comparable to the relative height derived from the ALS data at the GEDI reported footprint location are shown to occur where the footprint covered or was adjacent to spatially heterogeneous canopies, including canopies with small forest stands, holes in the vegetation canopy, and forest edges. This is a concern for the use of GEDI data acquired over these conditions which are prevalent in many forest systems. The impact of GEDI geolocation uncertainty on tropical forest change monitoring is demonstrated by comparing the GEDI h95 product footprint values (sensed in 2019) with simulated hˆ95 values derived from the ALS data (sensed in 2014) at the GEDI product reported footprint location and at the 300 shifted footprint locations. GEDI footprints where five-year canopy height changes, and not changes due to artefacts associated with the GEDI geolocation uncertainty or the GEDI simulator, are attributed conservatively. Differences among the six algorithm setting group GEDI h95 product relative height values are evident and influential on the change attribution. PlanetScope 3 m imagery sensed in 2019 are examined to provide qualitative evidence that support the efficacy of the approach for forest height reduction monitoring. The simulation approach described in this study provides a route to determine if forest canopy height change found by comparing multi-temporal data (for example, GEDI with previously collected ALS data or GEDI data) is significant relative to errors imposed by the GEDI geolocation. The treatment of change is simple, and recommendations for improvements to detect more subtle change are made. The study was undertaken using the Release 1.0 GEDI data and suggests, pending planned geolocation improvement, the need to accommodate for GEDI geolocation uncertainty, particularly over canopies that are spatially fragmented or that have heterogeneous three dimensional structure at scales comparable to the 25 m GEDI footprint dimension.

Forest Canopy Height Estimation Using Polarimetric Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (PolInSAR) Technology Based on Full-Polarized ALOS/PALSAR Data

Forest canopy height is a basic metric characterizing forest growth and carbon sink capacity. Based on full-polarized Advanced Land Observing Satellite/Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (ALOS/PALSAR) data, this study used Polarimetric Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (PolInSAR) technology to estimate forest canopy height. In total the four methods of differential DEM (digital elevation model) algorithm, coherent amplitude algorithm, coherent phase-amplitude algorithm and three-stage random volume over ground algorithm (RVoG_3) were proposed to obtain canopy height and their accuracy was compared in consideration of the impacts of coherence coefficient and range slope levels. The influence of the statistical window size on the coherence coefficient was analyzed to improve the estimation accuracy. On the basis of traditional algorithms, time decoherence was performed on ALOS/PALSAR data by introducing the change rate of Landsat NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index). The slope in range direction was calculated based on SRTM (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission) DEM data and then introduced into the s-RVoG (sloped-Random Volume over Ground) model to optimize the canopy height estimation model and improve the accuracy. The results indicated that the differential DEM algorithm underestimated the canopy height significantly, while the coherent amplitude algorithm overestimated the canopy height. After removing the systematic coherence, the overestimation of the RVoG_3 model was restrained, and the absolute error decreased from 23.68 m to 4.86 m. With further time decoherence, the determination coefficient increased to 0.2439. With the introduction of range slope, the s-RVoG model shows improvement compared to the RVoG model. Our results will provide a reference for the appropriate algorithm selection and optimization for forest canopy height estimation using full-polarized L-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data for forest ecosystem monitoring and management.

Tropical forest canopy height estimation from combined polarimetric SAR and LiDAR using machine-learning

Forest height is an important forest biophysical parameter which is used to derive important information about forest ecosystems, such as forest above ground biomass. In this paper, the potential of combining Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar (PolSAR) variables with LiDAR measurements for forest height estimation is investigated. This will be conducted using different machine learning algorithms including Random Forest (RFs), Rotation Forest (RoFs), Canonical Correlation Forest (CCFs) and Support Vector Machine (SVMs). Various PolSAR parameters are required as input variables to ensure a successful height retrieval across different forest heights ranges. The algorithms are trained with 5000 LiDAR samples (less than 1% of the full scene) and different polarimetric variables. To examine the dependency of the algorithm on input training samples, three different subsets are identified which each includes different features: subset 1 is quiet diverse and includes non-vegetated region, short/sparse vegetation (0–20 m), vegetation with mid-range height (20–40 m) to tall/dense ones (40–60 m); subset 2 covers mostly the dense vegetated area with height ranges 40–60 m; and subset 3 mostly covers the non-vegetated to short/sparse vegetation (0–20 m) .The trained algorithms were used to estimate the height for the areas outside the identified subset. The results were validated with independent samples of LiDAR-derived height showing high accuracy (with the average R2 = 0.70 and RMSE = 10 m between all the algorithms and different training samples). The results confirm that it is possible to estimate forest canopy height using PolSAR parameters together with a small coverage of LiDAR height as training data.

Canopy Height Estimation Using Sentinel Series Images through Machine Learning Models in a Mangrove Forest

Canopy height serves as a good indicator of forest carbon content. Remote sensing-based direct estimations of canopy height are usually based on Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) or Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) interferometric data. LiDAR data is scarcely available for the Indian tropics, while Interferometric SAR data from commercial satellites are costly. High temporal decorrelation makes freely available Sentinel-1 interferometric data mostly unsuitable for tropical forests. Alternatively, other remote sensing and biophysical parameters have shown good correlation with forest canopy height. The study objective was to establish and validate a methodology by which forest canopy height can be estimated from SAR and optical remote sensing data using machine learning models i.e., Random Forest (RF) and Symbolic Regression (SR). Here, we analysed the potential of Sentinel-1 interferometric coherence and Sentinel-2 biophysical parameters to propose a new method for estimating canopy height in the study site of the Bhitarkanika wildlife sanctuary, which has mangrove forests. The results showed that interferometric coherence, and biophysical variables (Leaf Area Index (LAI) and Fraction of Vegetation Cover (FVC)) have reasonable correlation with canopy height. The RF model showed a Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) of 1.57 m and R2 value of 0.60 between observed and predicted canopy heights; whereas, the SR model through genetic programming demonstrated better RMSE and R2 values of 1.48 and 0.62 m, respectively. The SR also established an interpretable model, which is not possible via any other machine learning algorithms. The FVC was found to be an essential variable for predicting forest canopy height. The canopy height maps correlated with ICESat-2 estimated canopy height, albeit modestly. The study demonstrated the effectiveness of Sentinel series data and the machine learning models in predicting canopy height. Therefore, in the absence of commercial and rare data sources, the methodology demonstrated here offers a plausible alternative for forest canopy height estimation.

This paper investigates the benefits of integrating multibaseline polarimetric interferometric SAR (PolInSAR) data with LiDAR measurements using a machine-learning approach in order to obtain improved forest canopy height estimates. Multiple interferometric baselines are required to ensure consistent height retrieval performance across a broad range of tree heights. Previous studies have proposed multibaseline merging strategies using metrics extracted from PolInSAR measurements. Here, we introduce the multibaseline merging using a support vector machine trained by sparse LiDAR samples. The novelty of this method lies in the new way of combining the two datasets. Its advantage is that it does not require a complete LiDAR coverage, but only sparse LiDAR samples distributed over the PolInSAR image. LiDAR samples are not used to obtain the best height among a set of height stacks, but rather to train the retrieval algorithm in selecting the best height using the variables derived through PolInSAR processing. This enables more accurate height estimation for a wider scene covered by the SAR with only partial LiDAR coverage. We test our approach on NASA AfriSAR data acquired over tropical forests by the L-band UAVSAR and the LVIS LiDAR instruments. The estimated height from this approach has a higher accuracy (r2 = 0.81, RMSE = 7.1 m) than previously introduced multibaseline merging approach (r2 = 0.67, RMSE = 9.2 m). This method is beneficial to future spaceborne missions, such as GEDI and BIOMASS, which will provide a wealth of near-contemporaneous LiDAR samples and PolInSAR measurements for mapping forest structure at global scale.

Estimation of Forest Canopy Height in Hilly Areas Using Lidar Waveform Data

Forest canopy height (FCH) is a key parameter in the estimation of forest biomass and productivity. However, areas with hilly or mountainous terrain present a genuine challenge to extract the vertical structural parameters by using the large footprint Lidar full waveform data. In this study, a mathematical method based on the inflection point of Lidar waveform is developed and applied to process geoscience laser altimeter system data. Furthermore, an improved model, the centroid-terrain index model (CTIM), is proposed to estimate FCH of different forest types in hilly areas. The accuracy of the CTIM model is evaluated by using different field measurement data collected from multiple forest districts in China. For conifer and broadleaf forests, the RMSE is 3.8 m in areas with slope angles larger than 5°. Compared to the ground-based Lidar data, the accuracy is satisfactory in hilly areas. The proposed approach makes a significant contribution toward improving the FCH estimation in hilly areas from large footprint full waveform data, and toward the forest ecosystem monitoring at the global scale.
