Life cycle assessment of iron-biomass supported catalyst for Fischer Tropsch synthesis.

The iron-based biomass-supported catalyst has been used for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS). However, there is no study regarding the life cycle assessment (LCA) of biomass-supported iron catalysts published in the literature. This study discusses a biomass-supported iron catalyst's LCA for the conversion of syngas into a liquid fuel product. The waste biomass is one of the source of activated carbon (AC), and it has been used as a support for the catalyst. The FTS reactions are carried out in the fixed-bed reactor at low or high temperatures. The use of promoters in the preparation of catalysts usually enhances C5+ production. In this study, the collection of precise data from on-site laboratory conditions is of utmost importance to ensure the credibility and validity of the study's outcomes. The environmental impact assessment modeling was carried out using the OpenLCA 1.10.3 software. The LCA results reveals that the synthesis process of iron-based biomass supported catalyst yields a total impact score in terms of global warming potential (GWP) of 1.235E + 01kg CO2 equivalent. Within this process, the AC stage contributes 52% to the overall GWP, while the preparation stage for the catalyst precursor contributes 48%. The comprehensive evaluation of the iron-based biomass supported catalyst's impact score in terms of human toxicity reveals a total score of 1.98E-02kg 1,4-dichlorobenzene (1,4-DB) equivalent.

Insights to the reaction kinetics of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis using an integral system over Cu-Mo promoted Fe catalyst

This work focused on the design and kinetics study of the Cu-Mo promoted Fe catalyst supported on biomass-derived carbon material with engineered surface chemistry and textural properties for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS). The kinetics tests were carried out at different operational conditions including temperature in the range of 280–310 °C, pressures: 20.6–41.3 bar, and gas hourly space velocity (GHSV): 1500–3000 h−1. The reaction rate was evaluated based on the enol mechanism using Eley–Rideal theory. To study the reaction rates along the catalytic bed, the reactor was assumed as an integral system. The production rates of the hydrocarbons were estimated by introducing a mathematical expression based on the lumped reaction network. The kinetics parameters, profiles of the partial pressures for the reactants and products were optimized using genetic algorithm. The proposed reaction mechanism proceeded with associative adsorption of CO, followed by hydrogenation to an oxygenated intermediate (CHO*); and the activation energy for CO consumption rate model was obtained as 51.90 kJ. mol−1. The provided one-dimensional model can lead to better understanding of the reaction mechanism of FTS as a sustainable energy resource with a novel catalyst design.

This work was to evaluate the catalytic properties Ru/Cobalt/SBA-15 catalyst for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS). The molecular sieve SBA-15 synthesized by hydrothermal method with rice husk ashes (RHA) and with tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS). The Ru promoted Co/SBA-15 catalyst was prepared by wet impregnation method and was characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray energy dispersion spectrophotometer, N2 adsorption-desorption, temperature-programmed reduction and transmission electron microscopy. The Fischer-Tropsch synthesis using the catalysts were carried out to evaluate the catalysts activities and its effect on FTS product distribution. The synthesis was carried out in a slurry reactor operating at 513 K, 20 atm, CO : H2 molar ratio of 1 : 2. X-ray diffraction showed that the calcined cobalt catalyst did not modify the structure of SBA-15, proving that Co was present under the form of Co3O4 in the catalyst. The addition of cobalt in SBA-15 decreased the specific superficial area of the molecular sieve. By RTP results was found the ranges of temperature reduction typical of iron oxides phases. Fischer-Tropsch synthesis activity and C5+hydrocarbon selectivity increased with the addition of Ru. The increases in activity and selectivity were attributed to the increased number of active sites resulting from higher reducibility and the synergetic effect of Ru and Co. The most interesting fact to be pointed out is that the use of this catalytic system for the catalyst prepared with alternative source of silica and cheap (rice hull ash) showed high selectivity in liquid products, that is, in hydrocarbons with C5+ (88.2% w/w ), higher than the catalyst prepared with conventional silica source.

Operando characterisation of the products of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis in a fixed-bed reactor studied by magnetic resonance

Operando measurement of catalyst performance presents many difficulties as it is necessary to obtain measurements at reaction temperature and pressure and also at relevant length scales of multiple pellets to replicate the pellet-scale mass transport. Non-invasive measurement under such conditions is challenging. In this study we have developed an NMR/MRI compatible reactor that is of industrially-relevant scale and can operate at typical conditions for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS). The pilot-scale fixed-bed reactor (20 mm i.d.) used for FTS is operated at 220 °C and 37 bar and is packed with 1 wt % Ru/TiO2 catalyst pellets. Multiple magnetic resonance techniques have been developed and applied to achieve quantitative characterisation of product species including hydrocarbons, water, oxygenates and branched alkanes in pores. In addition to spatially-resolved measurements of molecular diffusion coefficients of the product species from which the carbon chain length of the saturated hydrocarbons can be determined, preliminary estimates of the relative amount of oxygenate and water species and branched saturated hydrocarbons present within the pore space of the catalyst are also determined using non spatially-resolved two-dimensional 1H T1-chemical shift and two-dimensional 1H double quantum filtered correlated spectroscopy (DQF-COSY), respectively. The concentrations of water and oxygenates detected inside the pores of catalyst pellets decrease when the feed H2/CO ratio decreases. The amount and extent of branching of saturated hydrocarbon species is observed to be higher than for the effluent wax product, most likely due to the effect of mass transfer limitation within the reactor. This work demonstrates that a toolbox of operando magnetic resonance techniques is available to characterise different product species of FTS from within catalyst pellets. The information provided by these techniques can give insight into how both catalyst and reactor can be optimised.

Downsizing Sustainable Aviation Fuel Production with Additive Manufacturing—An Experimental Study on a 3D printed Reactor for Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis

Sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) are needed in large quantities to reduce the negative impact of flying on the climate. So-called power-to-liquid (PtL) plants can produce SAF from renewable electricity, water, and carbon dioxide. Reactors for these processes that are suitable for flexible operation are difficult to manufacture. Metal 3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing (AM), enables the fabrication of process equipment, such as chemical reactors, with highly optimized functions. In this publication, we present an AM reactor design and conduct experiments for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) under challenging conditions. The design includes heating, cooling, and sensing, among others, and can be easily fabricated without welding. We confirm that our reactor has excellent temperature control and high productivity of FTS products up to 800 kgC5+ mcat−3 h−1 (mass flow rate of hydrocarbons, liquid or solid at ambient conditions, per catalyst volume). The typical space-time yield for conventional multi-tubular Fischer-Tropsch reactors is ~100 kgC5+ mcat−3 h−1. The increased productivity is achieved by designing reactor structures in which the channels for catalyst and cooling/heating fluid are in the millimeter range. With the effective control of heat release, we observe neither the formation of hot spots nor catalyst deactivation.

Computational fluid dynamics simulation of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis coupled with a novel reaction kinetics using trimetallic catalyst over a biomass-based support

A mathematical modeling based on the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was performed in this work. The reactive flow behavior in a tubular reactor was modeled for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) using a novel trimetallic catalyst supported on a low-cost and renewable carbonaceous material. The fixed bed reactor was simulated as a porous media using a commercial software package (COMSOL Multiphysics). In this study, major attention has been paid to the species transport and reaction kinetics, as a fundamental stage in CFD simulation of FTS. The reaction kinetics was evaluated using Eley-Rideal theory assuming the molecular adsorption of CO based on the enol mechanism. Furthermore, the products distribution was accounted in the kinetics study by defining a mathematical expression and the kinetics parameters were optimized using genetic algorithm (GA). The activation energy and heat of H2 adsorption were estimated as 62.63 and −29.52 kJ/mol, respectively. The role of operational conditions was critically evaluated on the partial pressure profiles of the species, and the CFD results were validated with the experimental data. While increasing total pressure improved the partial pressure of C5+ hydrocarbons to 1.2 bar, increasing temperature to 310 °C limited the chain growth. The employed modeling and novel catalyst design can provide promising overview of the FTS reaction mechanism and products selectivity in fixed bed reactors.

Modulating Co reduction degree and Fischer-Tropsch synthesis performance by reducing cobalt silicate at different conditions

It is always hard to reduce Co2SiO4 to active Co0 on supported Co-based catalyst for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS). Here, amorphous Co2SiO4 material was prepared by in-situ doping TMOS during synthesis of ZIF-67, which was then reduced at different temperature and time to obtain ReX-2h (X = 400, 450, 500, 550, 600) and Re500-Yh (Y = 2, 4, 8) catalysts. The effects of reduction temperature and time on Co reduction degree and FTS performance were investigated. Results indicated that the ReX-2h and Re500-Yh catalysts exhibited low CH4 selectivity due to no obvious Co microcrystal found. The reduction degree of ReX-2h increased with reduction temperature, which led to enhanced FTS activity. However, both Re550-2h and Re600-2h exhibited poorer stability than Re500-2h, so the effects of reduction time on Re500-Yh were done. The reduction degree and FTS activity of Re500-Yh were also promoted with extending reduction time. The Re500-8h exhibited higher FTS activity with good stability.

Delaminated and Pit-rich Nano-kaolinites obtained via an Intercalation-etching Method and their Application to Fischer–Tropsch Synthesis

AbstractModified kaolinites possess excellent adsorption properties and, therefore, are regarded widely as potential catalytic components. The use of modified kaolinites as a catalytic component for Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS) has remained unexplored, however. In the current study, delaminated and pit-rich nano-kaolinite was prepared via acid treatment of N-methylformamide (NMF)-intercalated kaolinite (intercalation-etching strategy), and was used as a support to prepare a cobalt-based FTS catalyst (denoted as 15%-Co-HNKln). Compared with other FTS catalysts, the supports for which were raw kaolinite or directly acid-treated kaolinite, the 15%-Co-HNKln showed several advantages such as large specific surface area, dispersed Co particles with small particle size, more new active sites, and significant surface acidity. Given the aforementioned advantages, the 15%-Co-HNKln catalyst demonstrated very good FTS performance. Compared with that of the raw kaolinite-supported FTS catalyst, the CO conversion rate and C5–C12 hydrocarbon selectivity of 15%-Co-HNKln increased by 20% and 15%, respectively.

Optimization of Syngas Quality for Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis

While fossil oil reserves have been receding, the demand for diesel and gasoline has been growing. In recent years, syngas of biomass origin has been emerging as a viable feedstock for Fischer-Tropsch (FT) synthesis, a process for manufacturing synthetic gasoline and diesel. This paper reports the optimization of syngas quality to match the FT synthesis requirement. The optimization model maximizes the thermal efficiency under the constraint of H 2 / C O ≥ 2.15 and operating conditions of equivalent ratio ( E R = 0.0 -1.0), steam to biomass ratio ( S B = 0.0 -5.0), and gasification temperature ( T g = 500 °C-1300°C). The optimization model is executed using the optimization section of the Model Analysis Tools of the Aspen Plus simulator. The model is tested using eleven (11) types of municipal solid waste (MSW). The optimum operating conditions under which the objective function and the constraint are satisfied are E R = 0 , S B = 0.66 -1.22, and T g = 679 -763°C. Under optimal operating conditions, the syngas quality is H 2 = 52.38 -58.67 mole percent, lower heating value L H V = 12.55 -17.15 MJ/kg, and N 2 = 0.38 -2.33 mole percent. From an economic point of view, 12.98% to 33.12% of biomass is used as fuel for steam generation, drying, and pyrolysis. The generalized optimization model reported could be extended to any other type of biomass and coal.

Fischer-Tropsch synthesis: Osmium promoted Co@HCS catalysts

Little attention has been given to the use of osmium as a promoter for Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis (FTS). In previous studies, Os has proven to be a poor FT catalyst, but its use as a catalyst promoter has not been studied. In this study, the synthesis and use of Os nanoparticles supported on/in Co@HCS (HCS = hollow carbon sphere) FT catalysts are reported. The hollow morphology of the HCSs was exploited to study the influence of Os promoter nanoparticle location relative to the Co3O4 nanoparticles (dCo = 3.5–12.5 nm) and on the effect of Os on the reduction behaviour and activity of the Co FT catalyst. Os (0.1, 0.5 and 1 wt%) nanoparticles were loaded both inside and outside the HCSs, while the Co3O4 particles (Co 10 wt%) were loaded inside of the HCSs to give CoOs@HCS and Os/(Co@HCS). Electron microscopy, in situ PXRD, PDF, TGA, BET, and TPR studies revealed that both catalysts were successfully synthesized. The use of ex-situ PXRD, PDF and TPR studies provided information on the Co phases and reduction pathways of the Co3O4 metal catalyst and the spillover effect from Os to Co. Co3O4 and CoO phases were observed for the CoOs@HCS and Os/(Co@HCS) catalysts. More interesting was the observation of the Co fcc phase in the OsCo@HCS catalysts, indicating the importance of the Os-Co interaction. The catalyst with Co and Os close together (primary spillover process) gave a higher Fischer-Tropsch activity (38.5–46.4 × 10−6 molCO/gCo.s) and higher C5+ production than both the unpromoted catalyst (27.8 × 10−6 molCO/gCo.s), and the catalysts where Os and Co were separated (25.1–36.4 × 10−6 molCO/gCo.s) by the mesoporous carbon shell (secondary spillover effect). The studies on both CoOs@HCS and Co/(Os@HCS) catalysts have indicated for the first time the effect of Os on Co catalysts, with particular reference to FTS.

Green synthesis of Cu-Mo promoted Fe catalyst for production of the gaseous and liquid fuels through Fischer-Tropsch synthesis

Designing a novel Fe catalyst with improved selectivity to light olefins and heavier hydrocarbons attracts great attention for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) as an alternative clean energy resource. In this work, a highly efficient Cu-Mo promoted Fe catalysts supported on activated carbon with engineered features from biomass were synthesized and tested for FTS under relevant industrial conditions (300 °C, 2 MPa, and 2000 h−1). Optimization of the Fe, Mo, and Cu loadings led to a significant increase in CO conversion (from 46.7% for unpromoted to 78.8% for Cu-Mo promoted catalysts). Light olefin selectivity for the promoted catalysts was remarkably enhanced to 33.2% and 25.0% for Cu and Mo-promoted catalysts, respectively. The improved selectivity to light olefin can be attributed to the weakened basicity of iron sites for promoted catalysts. Improved C5+ selectivity on the other hand, can be assigned to the contribution of Fe carbides with higher C:Fe ratio in the structure of the optimized catalyst. The presence of Mo carbides was confirmed by XPS, XRD, and XANES results, manifesting the contribution of Mo in the catalytic activity of the optimized catalyst. The superior selectivity to both light olefins and C5+ hydrocarbons disclosed that the prepared catalyst could be an ideal candidate for industrial iron-based FTS catalyst in future to modulate the products distribution.

An insight into the role of the metal precursor and its concentration in the Spray Flame Synthesis (SFS) of FexOy@C nanoparticles for Fischer–Tropsch Synthesis (FTS) application

The effect of metal precursor composition on the synthesis of iron oxide nanoparticles in a spray flame reactor was studied. Three compounds, iron nitrate, iron acetylacetonate, and ferrocene, were tested at 0.1 M and 0.2 M concentrations. Variation of the iron precursor showed significant effects in crystallinity, crystallite size, and iron oxides content; the ferrocene produced the highest hematite content, and the nitrate showed the greatest magnetite contribution. Besides, all the particle characteristics changed when the concentration was duplicated, which was found mainly determined by the positive influence of the iron catalytic effect on the flame energy. FTS catalysts were prepared by the FexOy@C samples carburization, obtaining different active phase (χ-Fe5C2) contents from 52% to 92% and depending on the iron precursor employed. Catalysts exhibited good performances for FTS with CO conversions up to 70% and selectivity to C5+ products from 59% to 71%.

MOF-Derived Ru1Zr1/Co Dual-Atomic-Site Catalyst with Promoted Performance for Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis.

Cobalt-based catalysts have been widely used for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) in industry; however, achieving rational catalyst design at the atomic level and thereby a higher activity and more long-chain-hydrocarbon products simultaneously remain an attractive and difficult challenge. The dual-atomic-site catalysts with unique electronic and geometric interface interactions offer a great opportunity for exploiting advanced FTS catalysts with improved performance. Herein, we designed a Ru1Zr1/Co catalyst with Ru and Zr dual atomic sites on the Co nanoparticle (NP) surface through a metal-organic-framework-mediated synthesis strategy which presents greatly enhanced FTS activity (high turnover frequency of 3.8 × 10-2 s-1 at 200 °C) and C5+ selectivity (80.7%). Control experiments presented a synergic effect between Ru and Zr single-atom site on Co NPs. Further density functional theory calculations of the chain growth process from C1 to C5 revealed that the designed Ru/Zr dual sites remarkably lower the rate-limiting barriers due to the significantly weakened C-O bond and promote the chain growth processes, resulting in the greatly boosted FTS performance. Therefore, our work demonstrates the effectiveness of dual-atomic-site design in promoting the FTS performance and provides new opportunities for developing efficient industrial catalysts.

Bimetal–Organic Framework-Derived CoMn@C Catalysts for Fischer–Tropsch Synthesis

Introducing promoters to cobalt-based catalysts for Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS) has been found to be efficient in adjusting their performance in converting syngas into long-chain hydrocarbons. High spatial proximity of the promoter and reactive metal is desired to maximize the effectiveness of the promoters. In this work, CoMn@C composites were synthesized by the one-step carbonization of bimetal–organic frameworks (BMOFs: CoMn-BTC). BMOF-derived catalysts naturally exhibited that cobalt nanoparticles (NPs) are confined in the carbon matrix, with a concentrated particle size distribution around 13.0 nm and configurated with MnO highly dispersed throughout the catalyst particles. Mn species preferentially bind to the surfaces of Co NPs rather than embedded into the Co lattice. The number of Mn–Co interfaces on the catalyst surface results in the weakened adsorption of H but enhanced adsorption strength of CO and C. Hence, the incorporation of Mn significantly inhibits the production of CH4 and C2–C4 paraffin boosts light olefin (C2–4=) and C5+ production. Furthermore, the FTS activity observed for the Mn-promoted catalysts increases with increased Mn loading and peaks at 2Co1Mn@C due to the abundance of Co–Mn interfaces. These prominent FTS catalytic properties highlight the concept of synthesizing BMOF-derived mixed metal oxides with close contact between promoters and reactive metals.

Crystal plane dependent dispersion of cobalt metal on metastable aluminas

Metallic Co nanoparticles, widely used and studied as supported heterogeneous catalysts for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS), display catalytic properties that can vary significantly depending on their size and crystal structure. In this work, we used 59Co Internal Field NMR (59Co IF NMR) complemented by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) to demonstrate the influence of strong metal-support interaction on two noticeably different metastable alumina phases - γ-Al2O3 and χ-Al2O3. According to 59Co IF NMR and HRTEM, the metallic particles supported on χ-Al2O3 were larger and displayed a significantly higher content of Co in its hcp phase, which is known to be more active and selective to C5+ in FTS. The 1H NMR chemical shifts of hydroxyl groups anchored to the (110) and (111) spinel crystal planes were calculated by DFT. It revealed that the hydroxyl coverage of γ-Al2O3 facilitates the dispersion of Co precursor over the surface of the support, ultimately leading to the formation of smaller metal Co nanoparticles on γ-Al2O3 than on χ-Al2O3.

Phosphorus Deactivation on Co-based Catalysts for Fischer-Tropsch

The effect of phosphorus on a cobalt-based catalyst for Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis (FTS) has been investigated. Phosphorus is an impurity present in biomass and, in this work, its deposition on the catalyst during biomass to liquid (BTL) operation, based on gasification and FTS, has been mimicked. For this purpose, four different cobalt-manganese-rhenium catalysts supported on alumina were prepared by incipient wetness impregnation with different phosphorus loadings. The results showed that below 800 ppm of phosphorus, the catalysts performance was not significantly affected, possibly because the interaction of phosphorus mainly was with the alumina support. However, above this threshold, the effect of phosphorus was noticeable with a decrease in intrinsic activity. The reduced performance can be attributed to a physical blocking of cobalt sites. But, in all poisoned catalysts, the product distribution was affected and shifted towards less valuable products as methane and light paraffins. The electronegativity of phosphorus might be the cause for this effect, as the effective H2/CO ratio on the catalyst surface may be increased due to a weakened metal-CO bonding and consequently, the selectivity of the hydrogenated products increased.

Fisher–Tropsch Synthesis for Conversion of Methane into Liquid Hydrocarbons through Gas-to-Liquids (GTL) Process: A Review

The interest in Gas-to-Liquid technology (GTL) is growing worldwide because it involves a two-step indirect conversion of natural gas to higher hydrocarbons ranging from Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) to paraffin wax. GTL makes it possible to obtain clean diesel, naphtha, lubes, olefins, and other industrially important organics from natural gas. This article is a brief review discussing the state-of-the-art of GTL, including the basics of syngas manufacturing as a source for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS), hydrocarbons synthesis (Fischer-Tropsch process), and product upgrading. Each one is analyzed, and the main characteristics of traditional and catalysts technologies are presented. For syngas generation, steam methane reforming, partial oxidation, two-step reforming, and autothermal reforming of methane are discussed. For Fischer–Tropsch, we highlight the role of catalysis and selectivity to high molecular weight hydrocarbons. Also, new reactors technologies, such as microreactors, are presented. The GTL technology still faces several challenges; the biggest is obtaining the right H2:CO ratio when using a low steam-to-carbon ratio. Despite the great understanding of the carbon formation mechanism, little has been made in developing newer catalysts. Since 60–70% of a GTL plant cost is for syngas production, it needs more attention, particularly for developing the catalytic partial oxidation process (CPO), given that modern CPO processes using a ceramic membrane reactor reduce the plant’s capital cost. Improving the membrane’s mechanical, thermal, and chemical stability can commercialize the process. Catalytic challenges accompanying the FTS need attention to enhance the selectivity to produce high-octane gasoline, lower the production cost, develop new reactor systems, and enhance the selectivity to produce high molecular weight hydrocarbons. Catalytically, more attention should be given to the generation of a convenient catalyst layer and the coating process for a given configuration.

Combined steam and dry reforming of methanol process to syngas formation: Kinetic modeling and thermodynamic equilibrium analysis

In the present study, the combined steam and dry reforming of methanol (CSDRM) process were performed in the temperature range of 400 °C-900 °C, CO2/H2O ratio of 0.5–2.5 and (CO2+H2O)/CH3OH ratio of 0.5–2.5 at the atmospheric pressure over a Pt/ZrO2 catalyst in fixed bed reactor. The experimental data was applied to model the kinetic of CSDRM reaction based on Langmuir-Hinshelwood (LH) isotherm with one active site on the catalyst surface taking into account. By comparing the two experimental and calculated values, it was seen that error of kinetic model in predicting the experimental methanol conversion was lower (7.97%) than other responses. An almost completed methanol conversion was attained above 800 °C at all values of CO2/H2O ratios except for (CO2 + H2O)/CH3OH ratio of 0.5. The temperature had a positive impact on the H2 and CO yields, however; the dependency of CO yield to temperature was higher than H2 yield. CO2 conversion slightly decreased from 400 °C to 500 °C, while started to increase at temperatures above 500 °C regardless of (CO2+H2O)/CH3OH and CO2/H2O ratios. H2/CO ratio near to 2 which is suitable for Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS) reaction was obtained at (CO2+H2O)/CH3OH ratios bigger than 1.5, a CO2/H2O ratio of 1 and temperature above 800 °C. The methanol conversion values obtained from thermodynamic equilibrium were equal with the experimental data. The reverse water-gas shift reaction quickly happened at temperatures above 700 °C, higher values of CO2/H2O ratio and under excess oxidizing agent, which led to increasing the gap between the experimental data and measured from thermodynamic equilibrium analysis.
