High‐Resolution P‐T‐Time Paths Across Himalayan Faults Exposed Along the Bhagirathi Transect NW India: Implications for the Construction of the Himalayan Orogen and Ongoing Deformation

AbstractPressure‐temperature (P‐T) conditions and high‐resolution paths from 11 garnet‐bearing rocks collected across Himalayan fault systems exposed along the Bhagirathi River (Uttarakhand, NW India) reveal the tectonic conditions responsible for their growth. A garnet from the Tethyan metasedimentary unit has a 50.3 ± 0.6 Ma (Th‐Pb, ±1σ) monazite inclusion, suggesting that ductile mid‐crustal metamorphism occurred synchronously or soon after (<10 Myr) India‐Asia collision, depending on timing. High‐resolution garnet P‐T paths from the same rock show ∼1 kbar fluctuations in P as T increases over a ∼20°C interval, consistent with a period of erosion. We report garnets from the Main Central Thrust (MCT) hanging wall that have Eocene to Miocene monazite ages, and one garnet yields paths consistent with motion along the Main Himalayan Thrust (MHT) décollement. Most high‐resolution MCT footwall P‐T paths fluctuate in P (±1 kbar) as T increases, consistent with imbrication and paths from equivalent structural assemblages in central Nepal. Like those rocks, MCT footwall (Lesser Himalayan Formation, LHF) monazite ages are Early Miocene (9.3 ± 0.6 Ma) to Pliocene (3.0 ± 0.2 Ma). The results demonstrate the consistency in timing and conditions across the MCT at locations ∼650 km apart. If the present‐day Himalayan tectonic framework has not significantly changed since the Pliocene, the LHF duplex can be considered when attributing seismic events to particular faults. The MHT is undisputedly the significant factor in accommodating Himalayan seismic activity, but MCT footwall faults may explain some shallower hypocenters, without the need for unusual MHT geometries.

Tectonic setting and provenance of Early Cretaceous strata in the footwall of Main Central Thrust, Eastern Nepal: Implications for the archipelago palaeogeography of the Neo‐Tethys

The Early Cretaceous palaeogeography prior to the India‐Asia collision is still controversial. There are two end‐member models – an integrated passive margin versus an archipelago. Here, we report zircon U–Pb ages, Hf, and whole‐rock Nd isotopes of newly defined Cretaceous mica schists from the Main Central Thrust to constrain the Early Cretaceous palaeogeography of the Himalaya. The mica schists have Early Cretaceous zircons with εHf(t) values of −21.1 to −9.2. The mica schists are characterized by TDMC values of 1.8–2.5 Ga and whole‐rock εNd(0) value of −24.0. These features imply that these zircons generated from partial melting of lower crust as a result of an extension in some older continental crust, which were transported and deposted to form the protolith of the Cretaceous mica schists. Age pattern comparisons indicate that the age populations of the Cretaceous mica schists are significantly distinct from those of other Cretaceous strata in the Himalaya. It is obvious that the protolith of the Cretaceous mica schists were formed in an independent terrane (Arun) in the Neo‐Tethys with significant tectonic separations proventing any inputs from the Tibetan Himalaya, Greater Himalaya, or Indian Craton since 120 Ma. Combined with published U–Pb ages and other geological data, our data supports the archipelago palaeogeography with rifted terranes in the Neo‐Tethys Ocean, shedding light on the multiple amalgamation events along the India‐Asia collision zone.

Modeling High‐Resolution Pressure‐Temperature Paths Across the Himalayan Main Central Thrust (Central Nepal): Implications for the Dynamics of Collision

AbstractHigh‐resolution, garnet‐based pressure‐temperature (P‐T) paths were obtained for nine rocks across the Himalayan Main Central Thrust (MCT) (Marsyangdi River transect, central Nepal). Paths were created using garnet and whole rock compositions as input parameters into a semiautomated Gibbs free‐energy‐minimization technique. The conditions recorded by the paths, in general, yield similar T but lower P compared to estimates from mineral equilibria and quartz‐in‐garnet Raman barometry. The paths are used to modify a model based on a two‐dimensional finite difference solution to the diffusion‐advection equation. In this model, P‐T paths recorded by the footwall garnets result from fault motion at specified times, thermal advection, and alteration of topography. The best fit between the high‐resolution P‐T paths and model predictions is that from 25 to 18 Ma, samples within the MCT footwall moved at 5 km/Ma, while those in the hanging wall moved at 10 km/Ma. Under these conditions, topography grew to 3.5 km. A pause in activity along the MCT between 18 and 15 Ma allows heat to advect and may be due to a transfer of tectonic activity to the structures closer to the Indian subcontinent. During this time, the topography erodes at a rate of 1.5 km/Ma. Thrusting within the MCT footwall reactivates between 8 and 2 Ma with exhumation rates up to 12 mm/yr since the Pliocene. The results suggest the potential for the highest‐resolution garnet‐based P‐T paths to record both the thermobarometric consequences of fault motion and large‐scale erosion.

Cenozoic tectonic history of the Himachal Himalaya (northwestern India) and its constraints on the formation mechanism of the Himalayan orogen

A central debate for the evolution of the Himalayan orogen is how the Greater Himalayan Crystalline complex in its core was emplaced during the Cenozoic Indo-Asian collision. Addressing this problem requires knowledge of the structural relationship between the South Tibet detachment fault (STD) and the Main Central thrust (MCT) that bound these rocks from above and below. The fault relationship is exposed in the Himachal Himalaya of northwestern India, where they merge in their updip direction and form a frontal branch line that has been warped by subsequent top-to-the-southwest shear deformation. To elucidate how the two major crustal-scale faults evolved in the western Himalaya, we conducted integrated geologic research employing field mapping, pressure-temperature ( P-T ) analyses, U-Pb zircon geochronology, trace and rare earth element (REE) geochemistry, and thermochronology. Our field study reveals complex geometric relationships among major thrusts with large-magnitude shortening within each thrust sheet. Three successive stages of top-to-the-southwest thrust development are recognized: (1) imbricate stack development, (2) translation of large thrust sheets along low-angle detachments and backthrusting along the STD, and (3) development of duplex systems via underplating. This kinematic process can be quantified by our new analytical data: (1) P-T determinations show 7–9 kbar and 450–630 °C conditions across the STD. The lack of a metamorphic discontinuity across the fault is consistent with a backthrust interpretation. (2) U-Pb zircon geochronology yields ca. 830 Ma and ca. 500 Ma ages of granitoids in the MCT hanging wall, ca. 1.85 Ga ages of granitic gneisses in both the MCT hanging wall and footwall, and 8–6 Ma ages of granitic pegmatites in the MCT footwall. These ages help define regional chronostratigraphy, and the youngest ages reveal a previously unknown intrusion phase. (3) Trace element and REE geochemistry of 1.85 Ga, 830 Ma, and 500 Ma granitoids are characteristic of remelted continental crust, constraining the protolith tectonic setting. (4) U-Pb geochronology of detrital zircon reveals that siliciclastic sedimentary sequences above the STD, below the MCT, and between these two faults have similar age spectra with Neoproterozoic youngest age peaks. This result implies that the STD and MCT each duplicated the same stratigraphic section. (5) Th-Pb geochronology of monazite included in MCT hanging-wall garnet yields Paleozoic and early Tertiary ages, indicating Paleozoic and early Tertiary metamorphism in these rocks. (6) The 40 Ar/ 39 Ar thermochronology of the K-feldspar from southern MCT hanging-wall rocks evinces cooling below 220–230 °C ca. 13–19 Ma or later, constraining the thrust development history. We use these results to derive a tectonic model of crustal shortening across the Himachal Himalaya involving early thickening, tectonic wedging emplacement of the Greater Himalayan Crystalline complex between the MCT and STD, and continued growth of the Himalayan thrust wedge by accretion of thrust horses from the Indian footwall.

The Kumaun and Garwhal Lesser Himalaya, India: Part 1. Structure and stratigraphy

Our understanding of the geologic evolution of the Himalaya remains incomplete, particularly in regard to structural and geochronologic details of the Proterozoic-Paleozoic Lesser Himalayan Sequence. We conducted an integrated field mapping, geochronological study, and geochemical analysis of the Lesser Himalayan Sequence strata in the Kumaun and Garwhal Himalaya of NW India (78° 00′–80°30′E). Structural observations reveal a systematic change in deformation styles from lower to higher structural levels in the Main Central Thrust footwall. In the south, and at lower structural levels, the Main Central Thrust footwall is characterized by parallel folding and sparse development of axial cleavage. Quartz microstructures indicate that deformation occurred at temperatures below 350 °C. In contrast, in the north and at higher structural levels close to the Main Central Thrust, deformation is characterized by replacement of original bedding, the development of penetrative cleavage, and schistosity locally. Folds are tight, in places isoclinal and overturned. The corresponding quartz microstructures indicate that deformation occurred above 350 °C. Dating of detrital zircons from Lesser Himalayan Sequence metasedimentary units, and igneous zircons from schistose gneisses throughout the Lesser Himalayan Sequence allow refinements to the stratigraphic framework. First, unlike has been observed in western Nepal immediately west of our study area, U-Pb zircon dating suggests the absence of Paleoproterozoic strata in the Ramgarh Thrust hanging wall. This suggests that the thrust cuts upsection laterally along strike. Second, U-Pb detrital zircon dating suggests that metasedimentary strata in the Ramgarh Thrust hanging wall are correlative with basal units of the Outer Lesser Himalayan Sequence, removing the necessity that the Ramgarh Thrust hanging wall was allochthonous with respect to its footwall Lesser Himalayan Sequence units. Schistose gneisses with U-Pb ages of ca. 1850 Ma are older than Lesser Himalayan Sequence units in the area, suggesting that they are thrust-emplaced Lesser Himalayan Sequence basement. We conclude that the Ramgarh Thrust is an out-of-sequence thrust postdating a folding event in its footwall. The earlier proposal that Neoproterozoic-Cambrian Lesser Himalayan Sequence strata are the southern extension of the Tethyan Himalayan Sequence requires that the Tons Thrust, which separates the distal and proximal facies of the Lesser Himalayan Sequence, be a major, south-directed structure with a slip magnitude of >50–100 km.

Geochronologic and thermobarometric constraints on the evolution of the Main Central Thrust, central Nepal Himalaya

The Main Central Thrust (MCT) juxtaposes the high‐grade Greater Himalayan Crystallines over the lower‐grade Lesser Himalaya Formation; an apparent inverted metamorphic sequence characterizes the shear zone that underlies the thrust. Garnet‐bearing assemblages sampled along the Marysandi River and Darondi Khola in the Annapurna region of central Nepal show striking differences in garnet zoning of Mn, Ca, Mg, and Fe above and below the MCT. Thermobarometry of MCT footwall rocks yields apparent inverted temperature and pressure gradients of ∼18°C km−1 and ∼0.06 km MPa−1, respectively. Pressure‐temperature (P‐T) paths calculated for upper Lesser Himalaya samples that preserve prograde compositions show evidence of decompression during heating, whereas garnets from the structurally lower sequences grew during an increase in both pressure and temperature. In situ (i.e., analyzed in thin section) ion microprobe ages of monazites from rocks immediately beneath the Greater Himalayan Crystallines yield ages from 18 to 22 Ma, whereas late Miocene and Pliocene monazite ages characterize rocks within the apparent inverted metamorphic sequence. A Lesser Himalayan sample collected near the garnet isograd along the Marysandi River transect contains 3.3±0.1 Ma monazite ages (P ≈ 0.72 GPa, T ≈ 535°C). This remarkably young age suggests that this portion of the MCT shear zone accommodated a minimum of ∼30 km of slip over the last 3 Ma (i.e., a slip rate of >10 mm yr−1) and thus could account for nearly half of the convergence across the Himalaya in this period. The distribution of ages and P‐T histories reported here are consistent with a thermokinematic model in which the inverted metamorphic sequences underlying the MCT formed by the transposition of right‐way‐up metamorphic sequences during late Miocene‐Pliocene shearing.

A model for the origin of Himalayan anatexis and inverted metamorphism

The origin of the paired granite belts and inverted metamorphic sequences of the Himalaya has generally been ascribed to development of the Main Central Thrust (MCT). Although a variety of models have been proposed that link early Miocene anatexis with inverted metamorphism, recent dating studies indicate that recrystallization of elements of the MCT footwall occurred in the central Himalaya as recently as ∼6 Ma. The recognition that hanging wall magmatism and footwall metamorphism are not spatially and temporally related renders unnecessary the need for exceptional physical conditions to explain generation of the High Himalayan leucogranites and North Himalayan granites, which differ in age, petrogenesis, and emplacement style. We suggest that their origin is linked to shear heating on a continuously active thrust that cuts through Indian supracrustal rocks that had previously experienced low degrees of partial melting. Numerical simulations assuming a shear stress of 30 MPa indicate that continuous slip on the Himalayan decollement beginning at 25 Ma could trigger partial melting reactions leading to formation of the High Himalayan granite chain between 25 and 20 Ma and the North Himalayan belt between 17 and 8 Ma. The ramp‐flat geometry we apply to model the Himalayan thrust system requires that the presently exposed rocks of the hanging wall resided at middle crustal levels above the decollement throughout the early and middle Miocene. Late Miocene, out‐of‐sequence thrusting within the broad shear zone beneath the MCT provides a mechanism to bring these rocks to the surface in their present location (i.e., well to the north of the present tectonic front) and has the additional benefit of explaining how the inverted metamorphic sequences formed beneath the MCT. We envision that formation of the MCT Zone involved successive accretion of tectonic slivers of the Lesser Himalayan Formations to the hanging wall and incorporate these effects into the model. The model predicts continued anatexis up to 400 km north of the Himalayan range, consistent with the timing and geochemistry of leucogranites exhumed on the flank of a south Tibetan rift.

A Late Miocene-Pliocene origin for the Central Himalayan inverted metamorphism

Perhaps the best known occurrence of an inverted metamorphic sequence is that found immediately beneath the Himalayan Main Central Thrust (MCT), generally thought to have been active during the Early Miocene. However, in situ 208Pb/232Th dating of monazite inclusions in garnet indicates that peak metamorphic recrystallization of the MCT footwall occurred in this portion of the central Himalaya at only ca. 6 Ma. The apparent inverted metamorphism appears to have resulted from activation of a broad shear zone beneath the MCT which tectonically telescoped the young metamorphic sequence. This explanation may resolve some outstanding problems in Himalayan tectonics, such why the MCT and not the more recently initiated thrusts marks the break in slope of the present day mountain range. It also renders unnecessary the need for exceptional physical conditions (e.g., high shear stress) to explain the generation of the Himalayan leucogranites.

Age of metamorphism in the Lesser Himalaya and the Main Central Thrust zone, Garhwal India: results of illite crystallinity,40Ar–39Ar fusion and K–Ar studies

AbstractIllite crystallinity data from the Lesser Himalaya of Garhwal show that the upper Paleocene-lower Eocene Subathu Formation, deposited immediately prior to or early in the Himalayan collision, has not suffered significant regional metamorphism. The regional metamorphism in the upper Precambrian–lower Palaeozoic Lesser Himalaya must therefore be precollisional. Illite crystallinity results from Lesser Himalayan fossiliferous Permian strata show grades of metamorphism intermediate between upper Paleocene–lower Eocene and Proterozoic–lower Palaeozoic strata indicating a pre-Permian regional metamorphism for the latter.K–Ar whole rock cooling ages provide supporting evidence for pre-collisional regional metamorphism in the Lesser Himalaya. Slates and phyllites below the Main Central Thrust (MCT) show pre-Cenozoic whole rock ages, as old as Ordovician (486 Ma). Whilst resetting of K–Ar whole rock ages has occurred locally in pervasively cleaved Palaeozoic strata (near thrusts?), fracture cleaved Permian and upper Paleocene–lower Eocene sediments give whole rock ages compatible with diagenesis. The illite crystallinity results confirm that these sediments have not been heated above mica blocking temperatures.Muscovite40Ar–39Ar and K–Ar mineral ages within the 5 km thick MCT zone are as young as 8 Ma indicating that temperatures of above ~ 350°C were maintained in the MCT zone for over 10 Ma after high temperature (~ 550°C) shearing on the MCT. This heating did not affect the MCT footwall Lesser Himalaya to any regional extent, where pre-Permian low grade regional metamorphism has not been overprinted.
