The concept of urban farming refers to the practice of farming in urban areas, which is usually done on limited land such as house yards, rooftops or vacant lots in the city. Urban farming aims to meet the very high food needs of urban communities when there is a scarcity of land for food production in urban areas. The demand for vegetables is not matched by vegetable production, resulting in inflation. Some of the obstacles faced by KWT Cendawan 31 include: vegetable farming is not yet commercially oriented, management is still simple, motivation and awareness of members are still low, production patterns are not well planned, vegetable price information is still limited, marketing channels are not efficient and simple and limited promotion of vegetable products. This farmer women group empowerment program aims to increase vegetable production & income. The methods used in this program are active participatory methods, mentoring and counseling on vegetable production processes from upstream to downstream. The success of the work program carried out was able to overcome the problem of the lack of creativity and innovation of the Cendawan 31 Women Farmers Group (KWT) in developing the planting of types of vegetables, the low production of vegetables in the area of the Cendawan 31 Women Farmers Group (KWT) and being able to arrange a planting schedule, choosing the right type of plant and rotating the planter.

Steps to circularity: Impact of resource recovery and urban agriculture in Seattle and Tacoma, Washington

Capturing the value in urban residuals (food scraps and wastewater) is a critical component of urban sustainability and a circular nutrient economy. Food production in urban areas has also been recognized as an important component of urban health. Data from two cities (Seattle and Tacoma, WA) with active resource recovery and community garden programs were used to quantify nutrient recovery and food production potential. Yield data from growth trials conducted using soil amendments produced from locally generated organic residuals were used to model yields in existing urban agriculture programs. Our survey showed much lower than expected volume of food scraps from both residential and multifamily housing for both cities. Nutrient generation rates from food scraps were estimated as 0.55–0.67 kg N and 0.09–0.11 kg P capita−1 yr−1. Recovery rates for Seattle with an established food scrap collection program were 0.21 kg N and 0.006 kg P capita−1 yr−1. Nutrient recovery from wastewater biosolids was higher; 1–1.67 kg N and 0.23–0.76 kg P capita−1 yr−1. Data on effluent quantity and nutrient concentrations from these programs suggests that effluent has a high potential for nutrient recovery (4.03–5 kg N and 0.3–0.5 kg P capita yr−1). Yield was modeled for kale (brassica oleracea) considering the number of people that could be fed per hectare for one year using a 67 g portion by comparing yields from synthetic fertilizer and residuals-based amendments in both high and low quality urban soils. The Tacoma biosolids potting soil yielded enough for 310 and 736 people ha−1 yr−1 for the high and low quality soils, respectively. The modeled food/yard compost produced from the food scraps yielded sufficient kale for 148 to 353 people ha−1 yr−1. Relative yield from fertilizer for the low and high quality soils was 15 and 263 people ha−1yr−1, respectively. Considering yield, enough biosolids are produced to meet 6.7–29.2% of the vegetable needs of each city. These results suggest that significant nutrients can be recovered using existing infrastructure. With enhanced nutrient capture from wastewater effluent, sufficient nutrients could be recovered to meet the N and P needs for food crops for the residents of each city.

Development of Urban Farming as a Strategy to Support Food Security

Food security is a global strategic issue, affecting social and economic stability and even national security. Indonesia's population is increasing sharply, food security needs to be strengthened through urban farming. The source of food production in urban areas has decreased, due to the narrowing of agricultural land. The research method is descriptive and qualitative. Data collection was done using interview, observation and documentation techniques. The research analysis uses the model by Miles Huberman. The results of the study indicate that the community already understands and is familiar with urban farming with P2L, even groups of PKK women have participated in plant management in their yards; the inhibiting factors of the perpetrators are not understanding the technicalities of urban farming, lack of capital and the existence of extreme weather; The local government strongly supports the making of food security policies through urban farming by issuing several legal products of Regional Regulations.

THE ROLE OF INDOOR SMART GARDENS IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF SMART AGRICULTURE IN URBAN AREAS

The increasing global population and urbanization have led to a growing interest in urban farming to provide sustainable food production. Indoor smart gardens, a new form of urban farming, have emerged as an innovative and technology-based solution to urban agriculture. This paper explores the role of indoor smart gardens in modern urban farming and their potential impact on food production, environmental sustainability, and human health. Consequently, comparison was used of traditional outdoor farming vs. indoor smart gardening. Also, a comparative study was conducted using the case study of two leading brands of indoor smart gardens: Aerogarden and Click & Grow. The research’s results show that smart gardens have significant potential to revolutionize urban farming practices and address the growing demand for food production in urban areas. Our review of the literature and case study showed that smart gardens can significantly increase food production, improve environmental sustainability, and enhance human health in urban areas.

Investigating the potential of vertical farming and indoor agriculture for sustainable food production in urban areas

Because traditional agricultural methods are not always feasible in cities, urbanization has brought up a new challenge for food production. By permitting sustainable food production in urban environments, vertical farming and indoor agriculture offer a potential answer to this issue. To produce food sustainably in urban locations, this project will look into the possibility of indoor and vertical farming. The results show that indoor farming and vertical farming have the potential to solve several sustainability issues that traditional agriculture faces, including water use, land use, and transportation expenses. These techniques also hold the promise of improving food security, lowering the carbon impact of food production, and developing new business prospects in urban locations. The study also points out certain issues that need to be resolved, such as high upfront costs, energy needs, and the shortage of experienced workers. The findings of this study can be helpful for legislators, urban planners, and investors interested in promoting indoor and vertical farming as sustainable food production methods in urban environments.

Predicting the intention and adoption of hydroponic farming among Chinese urbanites

Urban agriculture has become increasingly popular as a viable solution to the global food insecurity, but the uncontrollable expansion of cities and populations has led to the significant decrease in cultivable space for conventional soil-based farming. Unlike conventional agriculture, soil-less hydroponic farming allows sustainable food production in urban areas without compromising the environment and public health. Using both theory of planned behaviour and knowledge-attitude-behaviour theory with four additional factors, the current study examined the intention and adoption of hydroponic farming among Chinese urbanites. An online survey, which involved 661 respondents from different cities in China, was conducted. The results of partial least squares structural equation modeling revealed the significant influence of tolerance of diversity, innovativeness, and knowledge about hydroponic system on attitude towards hydroponic system. Additionally, knowledge and attitude towards hydroponic system, perceived need for hydroponic farming, and hydroponic farming compatibility were found to significantly influence the intention of adopting hydroponic farming, which was also found to exhibit significant influence on its actual adoption. This study presented valuable insights that contribute to the development of a framework that promotes effective farming practices and strategies. The obtained findings can benefit marketers, practitioners, and policymakers in the agricultural and environmental fields, particularly in their efforts of planning, designing, marketing, and strategizing to promote modern agricultural practices and create a favourable environment for urban hydroponic farming in developing countries.

Multifunctionality of urban agriculture and its characteristics in Latvia

Abstract In the 21st century, urban agriculture renews and diversifies approaches to the practice within the context of urban regeneration, climate change risks, sustainable development and resource consumption balance problems. Influenced by the long historical evolution and intensification of various risks, food production in urban areas involves the widest multifunctionality to date. Therefore, the aim of this research is to identify the main functions of urban agriculture and to evaluate their significance in Latvia. The following tasks were set to achieve the aim: 1) to identify and classify functions of urban agriculture, 2) to analyse the performance and significance of functions in Latvia. Several methods were employed to perform tasks and achieve the aim: the monographic and descriptive methods for making a theoretical discussion; the analysis, synthesis and deduction methods for obtaining information, systematisation and classification of functions; a structured expert interview for rating and ranking functions and identifying interactions between them. The research identified 14 functions of urban agriculture, which were classified into 5 groups: political, economic, social, environmental and technological. The most significant functions of urban agriculture in Latvia are social (promotion of social cohesion and public health, education and maintaining traditions and values) and technological innovations. There are interactions between all functions, and support for urban sustainability, education, provision of ecosystem services and technological innovations have the strongest impact on other functions. Interactions of functions proved the multifunctionality of urban agriculture, which could be an important support tool to contributing to sustainable urban development.

Effects of Urban Smart Farming on Local Economy and Food Production in Urban Areas in African Cities

African cities are growing rapidly into inefficient, unsustainable, resource-starved ecosystems that negatively affect the local economy and food production. Food as a critical resource needs to be produced and managed more efficiently by local communities in the urban area. Urban smart farming (USF) has emerged as an important mechanism to address these challenges to achieve sustainable, resilient, and inclusive cities. USF has the potential to be the industry 4.0 green revolution in agriculture, which embodies innovative digital technologies. However, it is unclear how local African communities and key stakeholders perceive this novel solution and if they are willing to engage in its uptake. This study examines the relationship between the perceived benefits and challenges of USF and the willingness of local African communities to actively participate in USF projects as a potential mechanism to improve local economy and food production. To assess this relationship, a causal model was developed. In this causal model, the local economy and food production were defined as dependent variables. The conceptualized model and the inherent causality between the constructs were validated through a survey administered among African cities’ residents. The results of structural equation modelling indicate a significant positive impact of perceived benefits of USF as well as the willingness of African communities to engage in this technology on local economy and food production. Only minimal adverse effects of the perceived challenges of USF on the local economy and food production have been found. The study concludes that the benefits and willingness of local communities are the key drivers for implementing urban smart farms in African metropolitans. Therefore, it is recommended to focus on the benefits and the motivation of local communities in African cities where USF shall be further developed, rather than on the barriers. The validated causal model can be used as a framework to facilitate the adoption of USF in Africa and consequently enhance the local economy and food production in African cities.

Rooftops create spaces to vegetable production and thereby create opportunities for agricultural incorporation into urban communities, However vegetable production activities on rooftops are limited due to multiple challenges that need to be addressed before widespread implementation takes place. Rooftop agriculture can improve various ecosystem services, enhance the biodiversity of urban areas and reduce food security. Food production from rooftop gardens will help support and sustain food for urban and provide a rare opportunity to grow food efficiencies in typically unused spaces of the building. As human populations become more urbanized and urban consumers become more interested in local food for their families, the use of alternative agricultural production systems, such as rooftop cultivation technologies will increase. Importance of cultivating vegetables on buildings is a key component of making cities more sustainable and habitable. Rooftops are not the total solution to providing food security but they should supplement other sources of food production in urban areas. In covid-19 rooftop gardens play an important role during scarcity of vegetables. It is an alternative method of urban cultivation and people obtain vegetables from doorstep in safe guard from Covid -19.Rooftop garden gives us pure organic vegetables and is pleasant.

Urban agriculture: local government stakeholders’ perspectives and informational needs

AbstractIn many US states, the power to regulate urban agriculture (UA) rests in local governments. Although there has been increased interest in UA, some local governments have been slow to adopt policies or ordinances to foster food production in urban areas or have actively sought to limit UA in their municipalities. To learn more about the disconnect between resident interest and local government policy, University of Florida, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences Extension and Center for Public Issues Education conducted a statewide survey of local government stakeholders (LGS) to assess their attitudes toward UA, subjective knowledge of UA, perceived benefits of and barriers to the implementation of UA and educational needs. Responses were collected using 5-point semantic differential and Likert-type scales. Overall, respondents displayed positive attitudes and moderate knowledge of UA, and they identified a number of benefits of and barriers to implementing UA in their communities. The findings of this study support the hypothesis that lack of basic knowledge about UA is one difficulty in fostering UA. Despite being positively disposed toward UA, LGS may not fully understand how to effectively develop and implement policies to foster UA. This finding may also help explain reluctance to adopt local government policies to support UA. Efforts to provide LGS key information and enhance their knowledge of UA may support the development of UA activities.

Bacterial Nanocellulose Mulch as a Potential Greener Alternative for Urban Gardening in the Small-Scale Food Production of Onion Plants

Urban gardening is growing as an increasingly therapeutic, social, mental, environmental, and economical alternative to improve the quality of life. One of the options to enhance this activity is the use of mulches. There are several reports on the use of cellulose-based mulches in rural areas. This work is the first successful study on the use of nanocellulose mulches for small-scale urban food production based on bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) pellicules constituted by nanoribbons. In this case, the pellicules were produced by bacteria isolated from the Colombian species Komagataeibacter medellinensis (previously referred to as Gluconacetobacter medellinensis sp. Nov., a new acid-resistant strain that can grow at a pH as low as 3.5) under simple static conditions. A cheap substrate, such as ripened fruit not suitable for human consumption, was used to produce the BNC mulches. The obtained BNC mulches are cheap and environmentally friendly than plastic mulch based on polyethylene. The effectiveness of BNC pellicule mulches was evaluated during the growth of one type of onion plant under urban garden conditions and was compared with an uncovered system and a commercial polyethylene mulch. Progressive degradation of BNC mulches took place during plant growth, indicating the biodegradability of BNC mulches, and thus, the onion plants exhibited healthy physiological development. The results suggest that BNC mulches are environmentally friendly and easy to use for the protection of small-scale food production in urban areas during short plant-growing periods.

At present, however, vegetable production activities on rooftops are limited due to multiple challenges that need to be addressed before widespread implementation takes place. Rooftop agriculture can improve various ecosystem services, enhance the biodiversity of urban areas and reduce food insecurity. Food production from green roofs will help support and sustain food for urban communities and provide a rare opportunity to grow food efficiently in typically unused spaces. As human populations become more urbanized and urban consumers become more interested in local food for their families, the use of alternative agricultural production systems, such as green roof technologies, will increase in importance. While cultivating food on buildings is a key component of making cities more sustainable and habitable, green roofs are not the total solution for providing cities with food security. They should be viewed more as a supplement to other sources of food production in urban areas.

Sustainability of Urban Agriculture: Vegetable Production on Green Roofs

The practice of producing vegetables on green roofs has been gaining momentum in recent years as a method to facilitate agricultural sustainability in urban areas. Rooftop gardens are becoming an important part of the recent rejuvenation of urban agriculture, and offers alternative spaces to grow vegetable products for urban markets. Green roofs create spaces for the production of vegetable crops, which then generate opportunities for integrating agriculture into urban communities. However, vegetable production activities on rooftops are currently minimal due to multiple challenges that must be overcome before widespread implementation will occur, and these are presented and discussed herein in great detail. Although intensive green roof systems (>15 cm medium depths) are thought to be most suited for vegetable production, the greatest potential for sustained productivity is probably through extensive systems (<15 cm depths) due to weight load restrictions for most buildings. Thus, shallow-rooted vegetables that include important salad greens crops are thought to be the most suited for extensive systems as they can have high productivity with minimal inputs. Research presented herein agree that crops such as lettuce, kale and radish can be produced effectively in an extensive green roof medium with sufficient nutrient and moisture inputs. Other research has indicated that deeper-root crops like tomato can be produced but they will require constant monitoring of fertility and moisture levels. Vegetable production is a definite possibility in urban areas on retrofitted green roofs using minimal growing substrate depths with intensive seasonal maintenance. Rooftop agriculture can improve various ecosystem services, enrich urban biodiversity and reduce food insecurity. Food production provided by green roofs can help support and sustain food for urban communities, as well as provide a unique opportunity to effectively grow food in spaces that are typically unused. The utilization of alternative agricultural production systems, such as green roof technologies, will increase in importance as human populations become more urbanized and urban consumers become more interested in local foods for their families. Although cultivation of food on buildings is a key component to making cities more sustainable and habitable, green roofs are not the total solution to provide food security to cities. They should be viewed more as a supplement to other sources of food production in urban areas.

Environmental assessment of an integrated rooftop greenhouse for food production in cities

Vertical farming is emerging as an effective measure to grow food in buildings and can increase food production in urban areas in a more sustainable manner. This study presents a comprehensive environmental assessment of food production in an integrated rooftop greenhouse (i-RTG) – an innovative vertical farm consisting of a rooftop greenhouse connected to a building – and considers rainwater, residual heat (energy), residual air (CO2) and food from an industrial ecology perspective. This synergistic connection preserves resources and improves conditions in the greenhouse and the building. The goal of the study is to show the feasibility of the system and to calculate the environmental impacts from its whole life cycle, from infrastructure to end of life, by comparing these impacts with those of conventional production. The results show that the system is feasible and produced 30.2 kg/m2 of tomato over 15.5 months. The synergy with the building allows the cultivation of winter-fall crops without supplying heating and maintained an average temperature 8 °C higher than that outdoors. Moreover, rainwater was used to irrigate the crops, reducing consumption from the water supply network by 80–90%. The environmental assessment showed that the operation of the i-RTG has more impacts than the infrastructure (structure of the greenhouse, rainwater harvesting system and equipment) due to the use of fertilisers, which account for 25% of the impacts in four of the six impact categories studied. Regarding the infrastructure, the greenhouse structure and rainwater harvesting system of the building have substantial environmental impacts (over 30% in four of the six impact categories). Comparison with a conventional greenhouse demonstrates that the i-RTG has a better environmental performance, showing between 50 and 75% lower impacts in five of the six impact categories (for instance, 0.58 kg of CO2 equivalent per kg of tomato vs. 1.7 kg), mainly due to the reduced packaging and transport requirements. From this study, it was concluded that optimisation of the amount of infrastructure material and management of the operation could lead to even better environmental performance in future i-RTG projects.

Food production, urban areas and policy responses

A growing literature under the heading of urban agriculture extols the virtues for urban food security and poverty reduction of farming in urban areas of developing countries. This paper critically examines this literature, with particular reference to the spread of food production in and around sub-Saharan African cities and towns. The paper sets out a disaggregated view of food production in urban areas, emphasizing the analytical and policy importance of rural-urban interactions in resource and output markets as well as in income transfers. The scope and limits of useful policy intervention in this area are considered. The paper concludes that food production in urban and periurban areas certainly has a role to play in the food security of a proportion of urban dwellers, but its contribution to the welfare of the poor in developing countries should not be exaggerated, nor therefore should its claims for scarce development resources.
