Kinetics of the cross‐reaction of CH3O2 + HO2 radicals measured in the Highly Instrumented Reactor for Atmospheric Chemistry

AbstractThe sensitive Fluorescence Assay by Gas Expansion (FAGE) method has been used to detect methyl peroxy (CH3O2) and hydroperoxyl (HO2) radicals after their conversion by titration with excess NO to methoxy (CH3O) and hydroxyl (OH) radicals, respectively, to study the kinetics of the reaction of CH3O2 + HO2 radicals. The rate coefficient of the reaction was measured in the Highly Instrumented Reactor for Atmospheric Chemistry (HIRAC) at 1000 mbar of synthetic air at T = 268–344 K, selectively detecting both radicals. Using a numerical model to fit both CH3O2 and HO2 radical temporal decays globally at each temperature investigated, rate coefficients for the reaction have been obtained. The room temperature rate coefficient was found to be kCH3O2 +HO2(295 K) = (4.6 ± 0.7) × 10−12 molecule−1 cm3 s−1 (2σ errors) and the temperature dependence of the rate coefficient can be characterized in Arrhenius form by kCH3O2 + HO2(268 K < T < 344 K) = (5.1 ± 2.1) × 10−13 × exp((637 ± 121)/T) cm3 molecule−1 s−1. The rate coefficients obtained here are 14%–16% lower than the literature recommended values with an uncertainty which is reduced significantly compared to previous reports.

Kinetics and Product Branching Ratio Study of the CH3O2 Self-Reaction in the Highly Instrumented Reactor for Atmospheric Chemistry.

The fluorescence assay by gas expansion (FAGE) method for the measurement of the methyl peroxy radical (CH3O2) using the conversion of CH3O2 into methoxy radicals (CH3O) by excess NO, followed by the detection of CH3O, has been used to study the kinetics of the self-reaction of CH3O2. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy has been employed to determine the products methanol and formaldehyde of the self-reaction. The kinetics and product studies were performed in the Highly Instrumented Reactor for Atmospheric Chemistry (HIRAC) in the temperature range 268-344 K at 1000 mbar of air. The product measurements were used to determine the branching ratio of the reaction channel forming methoxy radicals, rCH3O. A value of 0.34 ± 0.05 (errors at 2σ level) was determined for rCH3O at 295 K. The temperature dependence of rCH3O can be parametrized as rCH3O = 1/{1 + [exp(600 ± 85)/T]/(3.9 ± 1.1)}. An overall rate coefficient of the self-reaction of (2.0 ± 0.9) × 10-13 cm3 molecule-1 s-1 at 295 K was obtained by the kinetic analysis of the observed second-order decays of CH3O2. The temperature dependence of the overall rate coefficient can be characterized by koverall = (9.1 ± 5.3) × 10-14 × exp((252 ± 174)/T) cm3 molecule-1 s-1. The found values of koverall in the range 268-344 K are ∼40% lower than the values calculated using the recommendations of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and IUPAC, which are based on the previous studies, all of them utilizing time-resolved UV-absorption spectroscopy to monitor CH3O2. A modeling study using a complex chemical mechanism to describe the reaction system showed that unaccounted secondary chemistry involving Cl species increased the values of koverall in the previous studies using flash photolysis to initiate the chemistry. The overestimation of the koverall values by the kinetic studies using molecular modulation to generate CH3O2 can be rationalized by a combination of underestimated optical absorbance of CH3O2 and unaccounted CH3O2 losses to the walls of the reaction cells employed.

Measurement of tropospheric HO2 radical using fluorescence assay by gas expansion with low interferences

An instrument to detect atmospheric HO2 radicals using fluorescence assay by gas expansion (FAGE) technique has been developed. HO2 is measured by reaction with NO to form OH and subsequent detection of OH by laser-induced fluorescence at low pressure. The system performance has been improved by optimizing the expansion distance and pressure, the influence factors of HO2 conversion efficiency are also studied. The interferences of RO2 radicals were investigated by determining the conversion efficiency of RO2 to OH during the measurement of HO2. The dependence of the conversion of HO2 on NO concentration was investigated, and low HO2 conversion efficiency was selected to realize the ambient HO2 measurement, where the conversion efficiency of RO2 derived by propane, ethene, isoprene and methanol to OH has been reduced to less than 6% in the atmosphere. Furthermore, no significant interferences from PM2.5 and NO were found in the ambient HO2 measurement. The detection limits for HO2 (S/N = 2) are estimated to 4.8 × 105 cm−3 and 1.1 × 106 cm−3 (ρHO2= 20%) under night and noon conditions, with 60 sec signal integration time. The instrument was successfully deployed during STORM-2018 field campaign at Shenzhen graduate school of Peking University. The concentration of atmospheric HOx radical and the good correlation of OH with j(O1D) was obtained here. The diurnal variation of HOx concentration shows that the OH maximum concentration of those days is about 5.3 × 106 cm−3 appearing around 12:00, while the HO2 maximum concentration is about 4.2 × 108 cm−3 appearing around 13:30.

An intercomparison of CH<sub>3</sub>O<sub>2</sub> measurements by fluorescence assay by gas expansion and cavity ring-down spectroscopy within HIRAC (Highly Instrumented Reactor for Atmospheric Chemistry)

Abstract. Simultaneous measurements of CH3O2 radical concentrations have been performed using two different methods in the Leeds HIRAC (Highly Instrumented Reactor for Atmospheric Chemistry) chamber at 295 K and in 80 mbar of a mixture of 3:1 He∕O2 and 100 or 1000 mbar of synthetic air. The first detection method consisted of the indirect detection of CH3O2 using the conversion of CH3O2 into CH3O by excess NO with subsequent detection of CH3O by fluorescence assay by gas expansion (FAGE). The FAGE instrument was calibrated for CH3O2 in two ways. In the first method, a known concentration of CH3O2 was generated using the 185 nm photolysis of water vapour in synthetic air at atmospheric pressure followed by the conversion of the generated OH radicals to CH3O2 by reaction with CH4∕O2. This calibration can be used for experiments performed in HIRAC at 1000 mbar in air. In the second method, calibration was achieved by generating a near steady state of CH3O2 and then switching off the photolysis lamps within HIRAC and monitoring the subsequent decay of CH3O2, which was controlled via its self-reaction, and analysing the decay using second-order kinetics. This calibration could be used for experiments performed at all pressures. In the second detection method, CH3O2 was measured directly using cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS) using the absorption at 7487.98 cm−1 in the A←X (ν12) band with the optical path along the ∼1.4 m chamber diameter. Analysis of the second-order kinetic decays of CH3O2 by self-reaction monitored by CRDS has been used for the determination of the CH3O2 absorption cross section at 7487.98 cm−1, both at 100 mbar of air and at 80 mbar of a 3:1 He∕O2 mixture, from which σCH3O2=(1.49±0.19)×10-20 cm2 molecule−1 was determined for both pressures. The absorption spectrum of CH3O2 between 7486 and 7491 cm−1 did not change shape when the total pressure was increased to 1000 mbar, from which we determined that σCH3O2 is independent of pressure over the pressure range 100–1000 mbar in air. CH3O2 was generated in HIRAC using either the photolysis of Cl2 with UV black lamps in the presence of CH4 and O2 or the photolysis of acetone at 254 nm in the presence of O2. At 1000 mbar of synthetic air the correlation plot of [CH3O2]FAGE against [CH3O2]CRDS gave a gradient of 1.09±0.06. At 100 mbar of synthetic air the FAGE–CRDS correlation plot had a gradient of 0.95±0.024, and at 80 mbar of 3:1 He∕O2 mixture the correlation plot gradient was 1.03±0.05. These results provide a validation of the FAGE method to determine concentrations of CH3O2.

ROOOH: a missing piece of the puzzle for OH measurements in low-NO environments?

Abstract. Field campaigns have been carried out with the FAGE (fluorescence assay by gas expansion) technique in remote biogenic environments in the last decade to quantify the in situ concentrations of OH, the main oxidant in the atmosphere. These data have revealed concentrations of OH radicals up to a factor of 10 higher than predicted by models, whereby the disagreement increases with decreasing NO concentration. This was interpreted as a major lack in our understanding of the chemistry of biogenic VOCs (volatile organic compounds), particularly isoprene, which are dominant in remote pristine conditions. But interferences in these measurements of unknown origin have also been discovered for some FAGE instruments: using a pre-injector, all ambient OH is removed by fast reaction before entering the FAGE cell, and any remaining OH signal can be attributed to an interference. This technique is now systematically used for FAGE measurements, allowing the reliable quantification of ambient OH concentrations along with the signal due to interference OH. However, the disagreement between modelled and measured high OH concentrations of earlier field campaigns as well as the origin of the now-quantifiable background OH is still not understood. We present in this paper the compelling idea that this interference, and thus the disagreement between model and measurement in earlier field campaigns, might be at least partially due to the unexpected decomposition of a new class of molecule, ROOOH, within the FAGE instruments. This idea is based on experiments, obtained with the FAGE set-up of the University of Lille, and supported by a modelling study. Even though the occurrence of this interference will be highly dependent on the design and measurement conditions of different FAGE instruments, including ROOOH in atmospheric chemistry models might reflect a missing piece of the puzzle in our understanding of OH in clean atmospheres.

An intercomparison of HO<sub>2</sub> measurements by fluorescence assay by gas expansion and cavity ring-down spectroscopy within HIRAC (Highly Instrumented Reactor for Atmospheric Chemistry)

Abstract. The HO2 radical was monitored simultaneously using two independent techniques in the Leeds HIRAC (Highly Instrumented Reactor for Atmospheric Chemistry) atmospheric simulation chamber at room temperature and total pressures of 150 and 1000 mbar of synthetic air. In the first method, HO2 was measured indirectly following sampling through a pinhole expansion to 3 mbar when sampling from 1000 mbar and to 1 mbar when sampling from 150 mbar. Subsequent addition of NO converted it to OH, which was detected via laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy using the FAGE (fluorescence assay by gas expansion) technique. The FAGE method is used widely to measure HO2 concentrations in the field and was calibrated using the 185 nm photolysis of water vapour in synthetic air with a limit of detection at 1000 mbar of 1.6 × 106 molecule cm−3 for an averaging time of 30 s. In the second method, HO2 was measured directly and absolutely without the need for calibration using cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS), with the optical path across the entire ∼ 1.4 m width of the chamber, with excitation of the first O-H overtone at 1506.43 nm using a diode laser and with a sensitivity determined from Allan deviation plots of 3.0 × 108 and 1.5 × 109 molecule cm−3 at 150 and 1000 mbar respectively, for an averaging period of 30 s. HO2 was generated in HIRAC by the photolysis of Cl2 using black lamps in the presence of methanol in synthetic air and was monitored by FAGE and CRDS for ∼ 5–10 min periods with the lamps on and also during the HO2 decay after the lamps were switched off. At 1000 mbar total pressure the correlation plot of [HO2]FAGE versus [HO2]CRDS gave an average gradient of 0.84 ± 0.08 for HO2 concentrations in the range ∼ 4–100 × 109 molecule cm−3, while at 150 mbar total pressure the corresponding gradient was 0.90 ± 0.12 on average for HO2 concentrations in the range ∼ 6–750 × 108 molecule cm−3.For the period after the lamps were switched off, the second-order decay of the HO2 FAGE signal via its self-reaction was used to calculate the FAGE calibration constant for both 150 and 1000 mbar total pressure. This enabled a calibration of the FAGE method at 150 mbar, an independent measurement of the FAGE calibration at 1000 mbar and an independent determination of the HO2 cross section at 1506.43 nm, σHO2, at both pressures. For CRDS, the HO2 concentration obtained using σHO2, determined using previous reported spectral data for HO2, and the kinetic decay of HO2 method agreed to within 20 and 12 % at 150 and 1000 mbar respectively. For the FAGE method a very good agreement (difference within 8 %) has been obtained at 1000 mbar between the water vapour calibration method and the kinetic decay of the HO2 fluorescence signal method. This is the first intercomparison of HO2 between the FAGE and CRDS methods, and the good agreement between HO2 concentrations measured using the indirect FAGE method and the direct CRDS method provides validation for the FAGE method, which is used widely for field measurements of HO2 in the atmosphere.

A new method for atmospheric detection of the CH<sub>3</sub>O<sub>2</sub> radical

Abstract. A new method for measurement of the methyl peroxy (CH3O2) radical has been developed using the conversion of CH3O2 into CH3O by excess NO with subsequent detection of CH3O by fluorescence assay by gas expansion (FAGE) with laser excitation at ca. 298 nm. The method can also directly detect CH3O, when no nitric oxide is added. Laboratory calibrations were performed to characterise the FAGE instrument sensitivity using the conventional radical source employed in OH calibration with conversion of a known concentration of OH into CH3O2 via reaction with CH4 in the presence of O2. Detection limits of 3.8 × 108 and 3.0 × 108 molecule cm−3 were determined for CH3O2 and CH3O respectively for a signal-to-noise ratio of 2 and 5 min averaging time. Averaging over 1 h reduces the detection limit for CH3O2 to 1.1 × 108 molecule cm−3, which is comparable to atmospheric concentrations. The kinetics of the second-order decay of CH3O2 via its self-reaction were observed in HIRAC (Highly Instrumented Reactor for Atmospheric Chemistry) at 295 K and 1 bar and used as an alternative method of calibration to obtain a calibration constant with overlapping error limits at the 1σ level with the result of the conventional method of calibration. The overall uncertainties of the two methods of calibrations are similar – 15 % for the kinetic method and 17 % for the conventional method – and are discussed in detail. The capability to quantitatively measure CH3O in chamber experiments is demonstrated via observation in HIRAC of CH3O formed as a product of the CH3O2 self-reaction.

A hydroxyl radical detection system using gas expansion and fast gating laser-induced fluorescence techniques

An OH radical measurement instrument based on Fluorescence Assay by Gas Expansion (FAGE) has been developed in our laboratory. Ambient air is introduced into a low-pressure fluorescence cell through a pinhole aperture and irradiated by a dye laser at a high repetition rate of 8.5kHz. The OH radical is both excited and detected at 308nm using A-X(0,0) band. To satisfy the high efficiency needs of fluorescence collection and detection, a 4-lens optical system and a self-designed gated photomultiplier (PMT) is used, and gating is actualized by switching the voltage applied on the PMT dynodes. A micro channel photomultiplier (MCP) is also prepared for fluorescence detection. Then the weak signal is accumulated by a photon counter in a specific timing. The OH radical excitation spectrum range in the wavelength of 307.82–308.2nm is detected and the excited line for OH detection is determined to be Q1(2) line. The calibration of the FAGE system is researched by using simultaneous photolysis of H2O and O2. The minimum detection limit of the instrument using gated PMT is determined to be 9.4×105molecules/cm3, and the sensitivity is 9.5×10−7cps/(OH·cm−3), with a signal-to-noise ratio of 2 and an integration time of 60sec, while OH detection limit and the detection sensitivity using MCP is calculated to be 1.6×105molecules/cm3 and 2.3×10−6cps/(OH·cm−3). The laboratory OH radical measurement is carried out and results show that the proposed system can be used for atmospheric OH radical measurement.

Organics Substantially Reduce HO2 Uptake onto Aerosols Containing Transition Metal ions.

A HO2 mass accommodation coefficient of α = 0.23 ± 0.07 was measured onto submicron copper(II)-doped ammonium sulfate aerosols at a relative humidity of 60 ± 3%, at 293 ± 2 K and at an initial HO2 concentration of ∼ 1 × 10(9) molecules cm(-3) by using an aerosol flow tube coupled to a sensitive fluorescence assay by gas expansion (FAGE) HO2 detection system. The effect upon the HO2 uptake coefficient γ of adding different organic species (malonic acid, citric acid, 1,2-diaminoethane, tartronic acid, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), and oxalic acid) into the copper(II)-doped aerosols was investigated. The HO2 uptake coefficient decreased steadily from the mass accommodation value to γ = 0.008 ± 0.009 when EDTA was added in a one-to-one molar ratio with the copper(II) ions, and to γ = 0.003 ± 0.004 when oxalic acid was added into the aerosol in a ten-to-one molar ratio with the copper(II). EDTA binds strongly to copper(II) ions, potentially making them unavailable for catalytic destruction of HO2, and could also be acting as a surfactant or changing the viscosity of the aerosol. The addition of oxalic acid to the aerosol potentially forms low-volatility copper-oxalate complexes that reduce the uptake of HO2 either by changing the viscosity of the aerosol or by causing precipitation out of the aerosol forming a coating. It is likely that there is a high enough oxalate to copper(II) ion ratio in many types of atmospheric aerosols to decrease the HO2 uptake coefficient. No observable change in the HO2 uptake coefficient was measured when the other organic species (malonic acid, citric acid, 1,2-diaminoethane, and tartronic acid) were added in a ten-to-one molar ratio with the copper(II) ions.

Night-time measurements of HO<sub><i>x</i></sub> during the RONOCO project and analysis of the sources of HO<sub>2</sub>

Abstract. Measurements of the radical species OH and HO2 were made using the fluorescence assay by gas expansion (FAGE) technique during a series of night-time and daytime flights over the UK in summer 2010 and winter 2011. OH was not detected above the instrument's 1σ limit of detection during any of the night-time flights or during the winter daytime flights, placing upper limits on [OH] of 1.8 × 106 molecule cm−3 and 6.4 × 105 molecule cm−3 for the summer and winter flights, respectively. HO2 reached a maximum concentration of 3.2 × 108 molecule cm−3 (13.6 pptv) during a night-time flight on 20 July 2010, when the highest concentrations of NO3 and O3 were also recorded. An analysis of the rates of reaction of OH, O3, and the NO3 radical with measured alkenes indicates that the summer night-time troposphere can be as important for the processing of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as the winter daytime troposphere. An analysis of the instantaneous rate of production of HO2 from the reactions of O3 and NO3 with alkenes has shown that, on average, reactions of NO3 dominated the night-time production of HO2 during summer and reactions of O3 dominated the night-time HO2 production during winter.

Uptake of HO<sub>2</sub> radicals onto Arizona test dust particles using an aerosol flow tube

Abstract. Uptake coefficients for HO2 radicals onto Arizona test dust (ATD) aerosols were measured at room temperature and atmospheric pressure using an aerosol flow tube and the sensitive fluorescence assay by gas expansion (FAGE) technique, enabling HO2 concentrations in the range 3–10 × 108 molecule cm−3 to be investigated. The uptake coefficients were measured as 0.031 ± 0.008 and 0.018 ± 0.006 for the lower and higher HO2 concentrations, respectively, over a range of relative humidities (5–76%). A time dependence for the HO2 uptake onto the ATD aerosols was observed, with larger uptake coefficients observed at shorter reaction times. The combination of time and HO2 concentration dependencies suggest either the partial saturation of the dust surface or that a chemical component of the dust is partially consumed whilst the aerosols are exposed to HO2. A constrained box model is used to show that HO2 uptake to dust surfaces may be an important loss pathway of HO2 in the atmosphere.

Reporting the sensitivity of laser-induced fluorescence instruments used for HO<sub>2</sub> detection to an interference from RO<sub>2</sub> radicals and introducing a novel approach that enables HO<sub>2</sub> and certain RO<sub>2</sub> types to be selectively measured

Abstract. Laboratory studies have revealed that alkene-derived RO2 and longer chain alkane-derived RO2 (> C3) radicals rapidly convert to HO2 and then to OH in the presence of NO in a fluorescence assay by gas expansion (FAGE) detection cell (Fuchs et al., 2011). Three different FAGE cells that have been used to make ambient measurements of OH and HO2 in the University of Leeds ground-based instrument have been assessed to determine the sensitivity of each cell, when operating in HO2 detection mode, to RO2 radicals. The sensitivity to this interference was found to be highly dependent on cell design and operating parameters. Under the operating conditions employed, during fieldwork undertaken in the Borneo rainforest in 2008, an OH yield of 17% was experimentally determined for both ethene- and isoprene-derived RO2 radicals. The high pumping capacity of this system, resulting in a short residence time in the cell, coupled with poor mixing of NO into the ambient air-stream for the titration of HO2 to OH effectively minimised this potential interference. An OH yield of 46% was observed for ethene-derived RO2 radicals when a smaller detection cell was used, in which the mixing of NO into the ambient air was improved and the cell residence times were much longer. For a newly developed ROxLIF cell, used for detection of HO2 and RO2 radicals an OH yield of 95% was observed for ethene-derived RO2 radicals, when running in HO2 mode. In experiments in which conditions ensured the conversion of RO2 to OH were complete, the yields of OH from a range of different RO2 species agreed well with model predictions based on the Master Chemical Mechanism version 3.2. For ethene and isoprene-derived RO2 species, the relative sensitivity of FAGE was found to be close to that for HO2, with an OH yield of 100% and 92%, respectively. For the longer chain or cyclic alkane-derived RO2 radicals (> C3), model predicted OH yields were highly dependent upon temperature. A model predicted OH yield of 74% at 298 K and 36% at 255 K were calculated for cyclohexane-derived RO2 radicals, and an experimental yield of 38% was observed indicating that the temperature within the cell was below ambient owing to the supersonic expansion of the airstream in the low pressure cell. These findings suggest that observations of HO2 by some LIF instruments worldwide may be higher than the true value if the instruments were sensitive to these RO2 species. If this is the case, it becomes necessary to compare atmospheric chemistry model simulations to HO2* observations, where HO2* = [HO2] + Σi αi [RO2i], and αi is the mean fractional contribution of the RO2 species that interfere (RO2i). This methodology, however, relies on model simulations of speciated RO2 radicals, as instrumentation to make speciated RO2 measurements does not currently exist. Here we present an approach that enables the concentration of HO2 and RO2i to be selectively determined by varying the concentration of NO injected into a FAGE cell. Measurements of [HO2] and [RO2i] taken in London are presented.

Measurements of uptake coefficients for heterogeneous loss of HO2 onto submicron inorganic salt aerosols

Laboratory studies were conducted to investigate the kinetics of HO2 radical uptake onto submicron inorganic salt aerosols. HO2 reactive uptake coefficients were measured at room temperature using an aerosol flow tube and the Fluorescence Assay by Gas Expansion (FAGE) technique that allowed for measurements to be conducted under atmospherically relevant HO2 concentrations ([HO2] = 10(8) to 10(9) molecule cm(-3)). The uptake coefficient for HO2 uptake onto dry inorganic salt aerosols was consistently below the detection limit (γ(HO2) < 0.004). The mass accommodation coefficient of HO2 radicals onto Cu(II)-doped (NH4)2SO4 aerosols was measured to be α(HO2) = 0.4 ± 0.3 representing the kinetic upper limit to γ. For aqueous (NH4)2SO4, NaCl and NH4NO3 aerosols not containing traces of transition metal ions, a range of γ(HO2) = 0.003-0.02 was measured. These values were much lower than γ values previously measured on aqueous (NH4)2SO4 and NaCl aerosols and also those typically used in atmospheric models (γ(HO2) = 0.1-1.0). Evidence is presented showing that the HO2 uptake coefficients onto aqueous salt aerosol particles are dependent both on the exposure time to the aerosol and on the HO2 concentration used.

The chemistry of OH and HO&amp;lt;sub&amp;gt;2&amp;lt;/sub&amp;gt; radicals in the boundary layer over the tropical Atlantic Ocean

Abstract. Fluorescence Assay by Gas Expansion (FAGE) has been used to detect ambient levels of OH and HO2 radicals at the Cape Verde Atmospheric Observatory, located in the tropical Atlantic marine boundary layer, during May and June 2007. Midday radical concentrations were high, with maximum concentrations of 9 ×106 molecule cm−3 and 6×108 molecule cm−3 observed for OH and HO2, respectively. A box model incorporating the detailed Master Chemical Mechanism, extended to include halogen chemistry, heterogeneous loss processes and constrained by all available measurements including halogen and nitrogen oxides, has been used to assess the chemical and physical parameters controlling the radical chemistry. The model was able to reproduce the daytime radical concentrations to within the 1 σ measurement uncertainty of 20% during the latter half of the measurement period but significantly under-predicted [HO2] by 39% during the first half of the project. Sensitivity analyses demonstrate that elevated [HCHO] (~2 ppbv) on specific days during the early part of the project, which were much greater than the mean [HCHO] (328 pptv) used to constrain the model, could account for a large portion of the discrepancy between modelled and measured [HO2] at this time. IO and BrO, although present only at a few pptv, constituted ~19% of the instantaneous sinks for HO2, whilst aerosol uptake and surface deposition to the ocean accounted for a further 23% of the HO2 loss at noon. Photolysis of HOI and HOBr accounted for ~13% of the instantaneous OH formation. Taking into account that halogen oxides increase the oxidation of NOx (NO → NO2), and in turn reduce the rate of formation of OH from the reaction of HO2 with NO, OH concentrations were estimated to be 9% higher overall due to the presence of halogens. The increase in modelled OH from halogen chemistry gives an estimated 9% shorter lifetime for methane in this region, and the inclusion of halogen chemistry is necessary to model the observed daily cycle of O3 destruction that is observed at the surface. Due to surface losses, we hypothesise that HO2 concentrations increase with height and therefore contribute a larger fraction of the O3 destruction than at the surface.

Design of and initial results from a Highly Instrumented Reactor for Atmospheric Chemistry (HIRAC)

Abstract. The design of a Highly Instrumented Reactor for Atmospheric Chemistry (HIRAC) is described and initial results obtained from HIRAC are presented. The ability of HIRAC to perform in-situ laser-induced fluorescence detection of OH and HO2 radicals with the Fluorescence Assay by Gas Expansion (FAGE) technique establishes it as internationally unique for a chamber of its size and pressure/temperature variable capabilities. In addition to the FAGE technique, HIRAC features a suite of analytical instrumentation, including: a multipass FTIR system; a conventional gas chromatography (GC) instrument and a GC instrument for formaldehyde detection; NO/NO2, CO, O3, and H2O vapour analysers. Ray tracing simulations and NO2 actinometry have been utilized to develop a detailed model of the radiation field within HIRAC. Comparisons between the analysers and the FTIR coupled to HIRAC have been performed, and HIRAC has also been used to investigate pressure dependent kinetics of the chlorine atom reaction with ethene and the reaction of O3 and t-2-butene. The results obtained are in good agreement with literature recommendations and Master Chemical Mechanism predictions. HIRAC thereby offers a highly instrumented platform with the potential for: (1) high precision kinetics investigations over a range of atmospheric conditions; (2) detailed mechanism development, significantly enhanced according to its capability for measuring radicals; and (3) field instrument intercomparison, calibration, development, and investigations of instrument response at a range of atmospheric conditions.

Concentrations of OH and HO&amp;lt;sub&amp;gt;2&amp;lt;/sub&amp;gt; radicals during NAMBLEX: measurements and steady state analysis

Abstract. OH and HO2 concentrations were measured simultaneously at the Mace Head Atmospheric Research Station in the summer of 2002 during the NAMBLEX (North Atlantic Marine Boundary Layer EXperiment) field campaign. OH was measured by laser-induced fluorescence employing the FAGE (Fluorescence Assay by Gas Expansion) technique, with a mean daytime detection limit of 2.7×105 molecule cm−3 (5 min acquisition period; signal-to-noise ratio = 1). HO2 was detected as OH following its chemical conversion through addition of NO, with a mean detection limit of 4.4×106 molecule cm−3. The diurnal variation of OH was measured on 24 days, and that of HO2 on 17 days. The local solar noon OH concentrations ranged between (3–8)×106 molecule cm−3, with a 24 h mean concentration of 9.1×105 molecule cm−3. The local solar noon HO2 concentrations were (0.9–2.1)×108 molecule cm−3 (3.5–8.2 pptv), with a 24 h mean concentration of 4.2×107 molecule cm−3 (1.6 pptv). HO2 radicals in the range (2–3)×107 molecule cm−3 were observed at night. During NAMBLEX, a comprehensive suite of supporting measurements enabled a detailed study of the behaviour of HOx radicals under primarily clean marine conditions. Steady state expressions are used to calculate OH and HO2 concentrations and to evaluate the effect of different free-radical sources and sinks. The diurnally averaged calculated to measured OH ratio was 1.04±0.36, but the ratio displays a distinct diurnal variation, being less than 1 during the early morning and late afternoon/evening, and greater than 1 in the middle of the day. For HO2 there was an overprediction, with the agreement between calculated and measured concentrations improved by including reaction with measured IO and BrO radicals and uptake to aerosols. Increasing the concentration of IO radicals included in the calculations to above that measured by a DOAS instrument with an absorption path located mainly over the ocean, reflecting the domination of the inter-tidal region as an iodine source at Mace Head, led to further improvement. The results are compared with previous measurements at Mace Head, and elsewhere in the remote marine boundary layer.

ATMOSPHERIC FIELD MEASUREMENTS OF THE HYDROXYL RADICAL USING LASER-INDUCED FLUORESCENCE SPECTROSCOPY

The hydroxyl radical, OH, is the most important cleansing agent in the Earth's atmosphere, removing the majority of trace gases by oxidation, including greenhouse gases and CFC replacements. It is intimately involved in the chemistry that generates photochemical smog, which includes many substances harmful to health, such as ozone and particulate matter. In this review, the technique of laser-induced fluorescence for the detection of OH in the atmosphere is described, using as an example the fluorescence assay by gas expansion (FAGE) instrument developed at the University of Leeds. The comparison of measured OH concentrations at a given field site with those calculated by an atmospheric model, which is a mathematical representation of the underlying chemistry, provides one of the best methods to test whether the key chemical and physical processes are understood. Examples are given for field measurements made in clean and polluted environments.

OH and HO&amp;lt;sub&amp;gt;2&amp;lt;/sub&amp;gt; chemistry in clean marine air during SOAPEX-2

Abstract. Model-measurement comparisons of HOx in extremely clean air ([NO]&lt;3 ppt) are reported. Measurements were made during the second Southern Ocean Photochemistry Experiment (SOAPEX-2), held in austral summer 1999 at the Cape Grim Baseline Air Pollution Station in north-western Tasmania, Australia. The free-radical chemistry was studied using a zero-dimensional box-model based upon the Master Chemical Mechanism (MCM). Two versions of the model were used, with different levels of chemical complexity, to explore the role of hydrocarbons upon free-radical budgets under very clean conditions. The "detailed" model was constrained to measurements of CO, CH4 and 17 NMHCs, while the "simple" model contained only the CO and CH4 oxidation mechanisms, together with inorganic chemistry. The OH and HO2 (HOx) concentrations predicted by the two models agreed to within 5–10%. The model results were compared with the HOx concentrations measured by the FAGE (Fluorescence Assay by Gas Expansion) technique during four days of clean Southern Ocean marine boundary layer (MBL) air. The models overestimated OH concentrations by about 10% on two days and about 20% on the other two days. HO2 concentrations were measured during two of these days and the models overestimated the measured concentrations by about 40%. Better agreement with measured HO2 was observed by using data from several MBL aerosol measurements to estimate the aerosol surface area and by increasing the HO2 uptake coefficient to unity. This reduced the modelled HO2 overestimate by ~40%, with little effect on OH, because of the poor HO2 to OH conversion at the low ambient NOx concentrations. Local sensitivity analysis and Morris One-At-A-Time analysis were performed on the "simple" model, and showed the importance of reliable measurements of j(O1D) and [HCHO] and of the kinetic parameters that determine the efficiency of O(1D) to OH and HCHO to HO2 conversion. A 2σ standard deviation of 30–40% for OH and 25–30% for HO2 was estimated for the model calculations using a Monte Carlo technique coupled with Latin Hypercube Sampling (LHS).

OH and HO 2 radical chemistry in a forested region of north-western Greece

This paper explores several aspects of the chemistry of a forested region in north-western Greece, from data collected during the AEROBIC97 campaign. An observationally constrained box model has been constructed to enable comparisons between modelled concentrations of OH and HO 2 and those determined by the fluorescence assay by gas expansion (FAGE) technique. These results represent the first comparison of measured and modelled OH concentrations in such an environment. The modelled OH concentrations are, on average,∼50% of those measured (range of 16–61%) over 4 days of model and measurement comparison. Possible reasons for the model-measurement discrepancy are discussed. A rate of production analysis illustrates the dominance of isoprene and the monoterpenes on OH loss, as well as the significance of the ozonolysis of biogenic species as an OH source. The measured and modelled [HO 2]/[OH] ratio averaged between 11:00 and 15:00 h is much higher than has been found previously for similar NO x concentrations,∼75 and 340, respectively, cf . 10–20. The high ratio reflects the rapid recycling through the OH–HO 2 oxidation chain, involving biogenic species. The high biogenic concentrations result in a midday OH lifetime of∼0.15 s. Finally, for the conditions encountered during the campaign, there is high net photochemical ozone production, peaking at∼20 ppbv h −1 around 09:00 h.

Production of peroxy radicals at night via reactions of ozone and the nitrate radical in the marine boundary layer

In this paper, a substantial set of simultaneous measurements of the sum of peroxy radicals, [HO2 + RO2], NO3, hydrocarbons (HCs), and ozone, taken at Mace Head on the Atlantic coast of Ireland in spring 1997, is presented. Conditions encountered during the experiment ranged from semipolluted air masses advected from Britain and continental Europe to clean air masses off the North and mid‐Atlantic, where mixing ratios of pollution tracers approached Northern Hemispheric background mixing ratios. Average mixing ratios of peroxy radicals varied from 2.5 to 5.5 parts per trillion by volume (pptv) at night depending on wind sector, and were observed to decay only very slowly from late afternoon to early morning (0.1–0.5 pptv h−1). Measurements of OH and HO2 on two nights using the Fluorescence Assay by Gas Expansion (FAGE) technique give an upper limit for [OH] of 2.5×105 molecules cm−3 and an average upper limit [HO2]/[HO2 + RO2] ratio of 0.27. A modeling study of the 1/e lifetimes of the peroxy radicals, assuming no radical production at night, yielded mean lifetimes of between ∼8–23 min for HO2 and 3–18 min for CH3O2. Given these lifetimes, it may be concluded that the peroxy‐radical mixing ratios observed could not be maintained without substantial production at night. No significant correlation is observed between measured [HO2 + RO2] and [NO3] under any conditions. Calculation of the reaction rates for ozone and NO3 with hydrocarbons (HCs) shows that the ozone‐initiated oxidation routes of HCs outweighed those of NO3 in the NE, SE and NW wind sectors. In the SW sector, however, the two mechanisms operated at similar rates on average, and oxidation by NO3 was the dominant route in the westerly sector. The oxidation of alkenes at night by ozone was greater by a factor of 4 than that by NO3 over the whole data set. The HC degradation rates from the three “westerly” sectors, where tracer mixing ratios were relatively low, may be representative of the nighttime oxidative capacity of the marine boundary layer throughout the background Northern Hemisphere. Further calculations using literature values for OH yields and inferred RO2 yields from the ozone‐alkene reactions show that peroxy radicals derived from the ozone reactions were likely to make up the major part of the peroxy‐radical signal at night (mean value 66%). However, the NO3 source was of similar magnitude in the middle of the night, when [NO3] was generally at its maximum. The estimated total rates of formation of peroxy radicals are much higher under semipolluted conditions (mean 8.0×104 molecules cm−3 s−1 in the SE wind sector) than under cleaner conditions (mean 2.4×104 molecules cm−3 s−1 in the westerly wind sector). A model study using a campaign‐tailored box model (CTBM) for semipolluted conditions shows that the major primary sources of OH, HO2, and CH3O2 (the most abundant organic peroxy radical) were the Criegee biradical intermediates formed in the reactions of ozone with alkenes.
