Fabrication of 208Pb and 193Ir targets on Al-backing using high/ultra-high vacuum deposition technique for low-energy nuclear reaction experiments

Aiming to study the interplay of different nuclear reactions at low incident energies, thin targets of enriched stable isotopes, 208Pb and 193Ir, have been fabricated at the target development laboratory of the Inter-University Accelerator Centre (IUAC), New Delhi. As a means of preparing a large number of thin isotopically pure targets, physical vapour deposition techniques, (a) resistive heating, for fabrication of 208Pb targets of mass thickness 160-340μg/cm2, and (b) electron-gun evaporation technique, for fabrication of 193Ir targets of mass thickness 17-60μg/cm2, have been employed. The fabricated targets were characterized using Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry (RBS) and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE–SEM). The thickness of targets was estimated based on the evaporation rate and measured by RBS. The RBS was employed to analyse the samples for trace- and heavy impurities, provided the measurements and analysis suggest that the targets prepared in the present work do not contain any impurities. FE-SEM was employed to examine the surface morphology and microstructure in high resolution. This technique enables the detection of any morphological changes induced by the irradiation process, offering insights into the effects of irradiation on the target films. The targets have been successfully deployed to measure complete and incomplete fusion excitation functions, mass distribution of fission fragments, and forward ranges of target-like recoils in 12C + 208Pb, 193Ir reactions from sub- to above barrier energies. Preliminary data analysis suggests the achievement of high-quality 208Pb and 193Ir target foils.

Detailed modeling of odd–even staggering in fission-fragment charge distributions

During the last 10 years or so the Brownian shape-motion (BSM) model has been used in numerous calculations of fission-fragment mass and charge distributions with encouraging agreement with experimental measurements. In this model the structure obtained in the fission-fragment distributions is entirely a consequence of the structures in the calculated five-dimensional (5D) potential-energy surfaces. The potential-energy model until recently did not accommodate the influence of the emerging fragment properties on the calculated potential energy. Therefore there were no odd-even effects in the calculated fission-fragment distributions. Recent extensions of the potential-energy model allow properties of the nascent fragments to be included in the potential-energy model. Application of the BSM model to execute random walks on these more detailed potential-energy surfaces led to calculated fission-fragment yields that exhibited odd-even effects, which “by eye” indicated reasonable agreement with experimental data. The present work goes a step further with a quantitative comparison between experimental and theoretical results based on the global and local odd-even staggering observables. Theoretical calculations and experimental observations both show that pairing effects and enhancement of two-nucleon relative to one-nucleon transfer in heavy-ion collisions decrease with excitation energy and implementing a damping of these quantities with excitation energy leads to improved agreement with experiment. Characteristic variations of the local staggering with charge split seen in the experimental data are also present in the calculated results.

Prompt-fission observable and fission yield calculations for actinides by TALYS

The nuclear reaction code TALYS adopts the Hauser-Feshbach statistical decay theory, to de-excite fission fragments. This involves for instance the evaporation of prompt fission neutrons and γ-rays. TALYS incorporates databases of primary fission fragment distribution which consists of primary fission fragment yield and data for excitation energy distribution of fission fragments. We conducted a sensitivity study on three parameters in TALYS and fitted them in order to reproduce experimental and evaluated data, in thermal neutron-induced fission of 235U. Moreover, we demonstrate a large-scale calculation of average prompt neutron and γ-ray multiplicities for 243 selected actinide isotopes.

SHELL EFFECTS IN THE FISSION OF <sup>236</sup>U* NUCLEI, FORMED IN THE REACTION <sup>232</sup>Th(α,f) AT INCIDENT ALPHA PARTICLES ENERGY OF 29 MeV

Mass and energy distribution of fission fragments of 236U* nuclei, formed in the reaction 232Th(α,f) at incident alpha energy of 29 MeV were studied to reveal the influence of shell effects. The experiment was carried out by 2E method at U-150M accelerator at Institute of Nuclear Physics, Almaty city. Acquired experimental data was decomposed into yields of separate shells, including deformed shells, assuming that the shell yield has the form of gauss distribution. The manifestation of deformed shells N84, Z52 and deformed shells Z36, Z38 was revealed.

Shell effect on fission fragment mass distribution at Ecn* up to 70 MeV: Role of multichance fission

Mass distributions of fission fragments produced from the $^{249}\mathrm{Bk}$ compound nucleus (CN), populated by complete fusion of $^{11}\mathrm{B}$ with $^{238}\mathrm{U}$, were measured for the excitation energies in the range of ${E}_{\mathrm{cn}}^{*}\ensuremath{\approx}36.7--69.7$ MeV. Nearly flat tops observed for these distributions indicate the presence of asymmetric fission, contrary to the pure Gaussian mass distributions expected at such high excitation energies. A fit to the mass distribution using three Gaussian functions provides an estimate of individual contributions from symmetric and asymmetric modes of fission. A significant contribution of the asymmetric component observed at CN excitation energies above 40 MeV can be understood only by invoking ``multichance fission'' in the calculations using the semiempirical model code gef. A systematic analysis of the mass distributions for several heavy transuranic nuclei reveals that the manifestation of the fragment shell effect in the integral mass distributions are visible even up to an initial compound nucleus excitation of ${E}_{\mathrm{cn}}^{*}\ensuremath{\approx}70$ MeV due to their influence on the distributions of higher chance fissions.

The difference between charge polarizations of fission fragments deduced by the static theoretical model and in the current data library

In this paper, we propose a theoretical method to deduce the charge polarization (CP) and most probable charge for fission fragments for the selected range of mass numbers based on a quantum many-body framework, namely, a constrained Skyrme Hartree–Fock+BCS model. We investigate the CP on the low energy neutron-induced fission of [Formula: see text]U as a representative reaction. We have found that the calculated CP has a noticeable dip that is clearly affected by the spherical shell structure around [Formula: see text]Sn and deformed one around [Formula: see text]144 and a peak for their counterparts, which are common features to those of widely-used Wahl’s systematics, but otherwise, our CP values converge to zero. Especially, we could not see a deep valley and a big hump in the region of symmetric fission at [Formula: see text]112 and 124 present in Wahl’s systematics. The gradient of our CP near the symmetric fission is negative concerning the mass number of fission fragments, which is consistent with other previous theoretical studies; however, that is the opposite of the gradient in Wahl’s systematics. This paper shows the difference between the charge distribution of fission fragments, which has been used practically so far, in comparison with the calculation by microscopic nuclear theory.

Fission dynamics of excited compound nuclei in a wide range of fissile parameters produced in O16,18+X reactions within a stochastic approach

A stochastic approach based on four-dimensional Langevin equations has been used to simulate the fission dynamics of the excited compound nuclei $^{256}\mathrm{Fm}, ^{254}\mathrm{Fm}, ^{224}\mathrm{Th}, ^{215}\mathrm{Fr}, ^{213}\mathrm{Fr}, ^{200}\mathrm{Pb}, ^{187}\mathrm{Ir}, ^{172}\mathrm{Yb}, ^{170}\mathrm{Yb}, ^{162}\mathrm{Yb}, ^{142}\mathrm{Ce}$, and $^{125}\mathrm{Cs}$ produced in ${}^{16,18}\mathrm{O}+X$ reactions with projectile energies 158.8 and 288 MeV. The effect of nuclear dissipation was investigated in the dynamical simulation of fission process of these nuclei. The average prescission neutron multiplicity, the fission time, the average total kinetic energy of fission fragments, the mass and energy distribution of fission fragments, and the variation of the prescission neutron multiplicity with total kinetic energy of fission fragments have been calculated for these nuclei. The dynamical calculations have taken into account not only three shape collective coordinates introduced on the basis of the ``funny hills'' shape parameters but also orientation degree of freedom (spin about the symmetry axis), and in the dynamical calculations dissipation generated through the chaos-weighted wall and window friction formula and also the sum of the chaos-weighted wall and window friction formula with the two-body nuclear friction. Furthermore, the effect of dissipation coefficient of $K, {\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{K}$, were also considered in the dynamical calculations. Comparison of the theoretical results with the experimental data shows that the experimental data for compound nuclei produced with the projectile energy 158.8 MeV can be reproduced satisfactorily with the results of calculations by using the chaos-weighted wall and window friction formula, although the results of calculations of the average prescission neutron multiplicity, the fission time, and the variation of the pre-scission neutron multiplicity with total kinetic energy of fission fragments lie somewhat below the experimental data for heavy nuclei produced in reactions with projectile energy ${E}_{\mathrm{lab}}=158.8\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{MeV}$ and also for compound nuclei produced with the projectile energy 288 MeV. It was also shown that for reproducing experimental data for heavy nuclei produced in reactions with projectile energy ${E}_{\mathrm{lab}}=158.8\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{MeV}$ and also for nuclei produced with projectile energy ${E}_{\mathrm{lab}}=288\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{MeV}$ is suitable to use the sum of the chaos-weighted wall and window friction formula with the two-body nuclear friction in the Langevin equations. In other words, for simulations of fission dynamics of nuclei at high excitation energies and also for heavy nuclei it is suitable to use the sum of the chaos-weighted wall and window friction formula with the two-body nuclear friction in the Langevin equations.

Microscopic calculation of fission product yields for odd-mass nuclei

Fission data are essential inputs to reaction networks involved in nucleosynthesis simulations and nuclear forensics. In such applications as well as in the description of multi-chance fission, the characteristics of fission for odd-mass nuclei are just as important as those for even-even nuclei. The fission theories that aim at explicitly describing fission dynamics are typically based on some variant of the nuclear mean-field theory. In such cases, the treatment of systems with an odd number of particles is markedly more involved, both formally and computationally. In this article, we use the blocking prescription of the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory with Skyrme energy functionals to compute the deformation properties of odd-mass uranium isotopes. We show that the resulting fission fragment distributions depend quite significantly on the spin of the odd neutron. By direct calculation of the spin distribution of the fissioning nucleus, we propose a methodology to rigorously predict the charge and mass distributions in odd-mass nuclei.

The description of dynamical fission process using improved quantum molecular dynamics model incorporated with microscopic potential energy surface

A new method, namely the improved quantum molecular dynamics model incorporated with the microscopic potential energy surface, is proposed to simulate the dynamical evolution from saddle to scission point and to calculate the isotope yields of fission fragments in thermal neutron-induced fission of actinide nuclei near 236U. With this approach, the shell and pairing effects are introduced by the microscopic potential energy, while the isospin effect, the dynamical effects of fluctuations and correlations in fission process are automatically included in the improved quantum molecular dynamics model. These two aspects eventually influence the productions of fission fragments. The calculated both charge and mass distributions of fission fragments for a series of actinide nuclei are in overall agreement with the evaluated data from JEFF-3.3 and ENDF/B-VIII.0. The isotope distributions of fission fragments in the fission of 236U reproduce the data reasonable well, from which we extract the relationship between peak mass number of the isotope distributions and the charge number of fission fragments. We find that this relationship deviates linear relation slightly at certain cases, which indicates the isospin nonequilibrium effect. By tracking back to the fission process on the two dimension plane of elongation and mass asymmetry of prefragments, we find that the necked-in shape and the separation of two parts happen much faster for the 132Sn than 128,136Sn in the time evolution of the distance R between the centers of two parts of the fissioning system. The events producing 128,132,136Sn and 136,140,144Xe present two kinds of average fission paths with bypassing and going through the minimum-energy valley of the microscopic potential energy surface, respectively.

To study the neutron-induced fission of Pu, potential energy surface (PES) calculations were performed using zero and finite-temperature density functional theory (FT-DFT) with the Skyrme force. The energy of the incident neutron was simulated by the temperature of the FT-DFT. The variations of the least-energy fission path, fission barrier, total kinetic energy, scission line, and mass distribution of fission fragments with the incident neutron energy were analyzed. It was learned that an increase in the temperature lowers the barrier height, the isomeric-state energy, and the ridge between symmetric and asymmetric fission valleys. Additionally, the gaps of the single particle levels become smaller with an increase in the temperature. As the temperature increases, the pre-fission region shrinks, and the scission occurs at smaller deformation around the symmetric fission channel. At low temperatures, the pairing correlations in the collective space are similar to those in zero-temperature DFT, and when the temperature is 0.3 MeV, the pairing gaps decrease rapidly. Two different methods were used to calculate the fission yields of the neutron-induced fission Pu (n, f) with different incident neutron energies, in the framework of time-dependent generator coordinate method (TDGCM). One way to calculate the fission yield of Pu (n, f) is to solve the collective equation of the TDGCM by using the PES from the FT-DFT with the corresponding temperature. The other involves using the PES from the zero-temperature DFT and adjusting the initial collective energy of the wave packet in the TDGCM according to the incident neutron energy. For the cases of the lower incident neutron energies, these two methods gave similar results and reproduced the experimental peak and width of fission fragment distribution. However, for the highest incident neutron energy considered in this study, the results from the TDGCM using the PES from zero-temperature DFT deviated explicitly from the experimental data, whereas those obtained by using the PES from FT-DFT remained close to the experimental data. This indicated that, with the increase in the incident neutron energy, the shell structure of the compound nuclei changed explicitly; thus, it may not be effective to use the PES from zero-temperature to perform the fission dynamic calculation.

Determination of the Plasma Delay Time in PIPS detectors for fission fragments at the LOHENGRIN spectrometer

The VElocity foR Direct particle Identification spectrometer (VERDI) is a 2E-2v fission spectrometer that allows the measurement of the total mass distribution of secondary fission fragments with a resolving power of 1-2 u. It consists of two time-of-flight (ToF) arms, with one Micro Channel Plate (MCP) detector and up to 32 Silicon PIPS (Passive Implanted Planar Silicon) detectors per arm. The MCPs provide the start timing signals and the PIPS detectors provide both the energy and the stopping ToF signals. In real conditions, the PIPS signals are affected by the formation of plasma from the interaction between the heavy ions and the detector material. The plasma contributes to a reduction in signal amplitude, resulting in a Pulse Height Defect (PHD), and introduces a signal delay, known as Plasma Delay Time (PDT). An experiment to characterize the PDT and PHD was performed at the LOHENGRIN recoil separator of the Institut Laue Langevin (ILL). Characteristic fission fragments from the 239Pu(n,f) reaction were separated based on their A/Q and E/Q ratios, allowing the measurement of a wide range of energies from 21 to 110 MeV and masses between 80 and 149 u. Six PIPS detectors were characterized to study their individual responses to the PDT and PHD effects. The signals were recorded in a digital acquisition system to completely exploit the offline analysis capabilities. Achieved combined timing and energy resolutions for fission fragments varied between 72(2) ps and 100(4) ps and 1.4% - 2% (FWHM), respectively. Preliminary PHD and PDT data are presented from the masses A=85, 95, 130 and 143. The PHD trends are strongly correlated with both the ion energy and mass. The PDT, on the other hand, shows a strong variation as a function of the ion kinetic energy but a smaller dependence on the ion mass.

Microscopic simulation of symmetric boost fission with antisymmetrized molecular dynamics

We present our first results for a microscopic simulation of symmetric boost fission in terms of the antisymmetrized molecular dynamics (AMD) model. In AMD model, ground states of fissioning nuclei were prepared by a frictional cooling method and symmetrical boost momenta were given to nucleons inside to split the ground-state into fission fragments. After the simulation, we calculated the mass numbers and total kinetic energy (TKE) of the fission fragments. We also calculated orbital angular momenta of each fragment and identified them as spins, their mutual orientation and their orientation with respect to the linear momenta which defined the fission axis. Moreover, we found spin distribution of fission fragments was similar to the one given by the Fermi-gas model if spin cut-off parameter was adjusted. Finally, several ternary fission events were observed, emitting Tritium or 4He from the neck region, and average energy and angles of these ternary particles with respect to the fission axis were found to be in accord with experimental data.

Time-dependent generator coordinate method study of fission. II. Total kinetic energy distribution

A model is developed to calculate the total kinetic energy (TKE) distribution of fission fragments in the framework of the time-dependent generator coordinate method (TDGCM), extended to include dissipation effects in the description of induced fission dynamics. Starting from an expression for the dissipative term in the GCM Hamiltonian that determines the time evolution of a statistical collective wave function, derived in the first part of this work, the integrated flux of the probability current through the scission hyper-surface can be computed at different temperatures. The kinetic energy at scission for a specific pair of fragments at a given temperature is determined by the energy balance formula. By folding the kinetic energies of the fragments with the flux of the probability current, the TKE distribution is calculated. The method is illustrated with a calculation of the TKE distribution for induced fission of $^{228}$Th, in the 3D space of collective coordinates: axially-symmetric quadrupole and octupole deformations, and nuclear temperature.

Influence of Spontaneous Fission Rates on the r-process Nucleosynthesis

The effects of spontaneous fission on r-process nucleosynthesis are investigated in the hot wind r-process scenario. We perform network calculations using three sets of spontaneous fission rates to study how the abundance pattern is shaped when different sets of fissioning nuclei are encountered by the r-process nuclear flow. The relative contributions from spontaneous fission, neutron-induced fission, and β-delayed fission to the nucleosynthesis process are studied by calculating the corresponding fission flow. We show that the relative contributions of various fission channels in r-process nucleosynthesis depend on the astrophysical conditions and fission models used. By using the spontaneous fission rates from a modified Swiatecki’s formula with isospin and blocking effects, the spontaneous fission and neutron-induced fission play an equally important role in r-process nucleosynthesis under an extreme neutron-rich astrophysical scenario with Y e = 0.1. The fissioning nuclei are located in different regions of the nuclear chart when different spontaneous fission models are used. The fission fragment distributions of fissioning nuclei in different regions have apparent diversity, which affects the mass regions where fission products are deposited, leading to the difference of the final abundance around the second r-process peak and rare-earth subpeak.

A general framework for describing photofission observables of actinides at an average excitation energy below 30 MeV * *Supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (11675075), Independent research project of key laboratory of plasma physics, CAEP (JCKYS2021212009) and Hengyang Municipal Science and Technology Project (202150054076)

A reasonable prediction of photofission observables plays a paramount role in understanding the photofission process and guiding various photofission-induced applications, such as short-lived isotope production, nuclear waste disposal, and nuclear safeguards. However, the available experimental data for photofission observables are limited, and the existing models and programs have mainly been developed for neutron-induced fission processes. In this study, a general framework is proposed for characterizing the photofission observables of actinides, including the mass yield distributions (MYD) and isobaric charge distributions (ICD) of fission fragments and the multiplicity and energy distributions of prompt neutrons (np ) and prompt γ rays (γ p ). The framework encompasses various systematic neutron models and empirical models considering the Bohr hypothesis and does not rely on the experimental data as input. These models are then validated individually against experimental data at an average excitation energy below 30 MeV, which shows the reliability and robustness of the general framework. Finally, we employ this framework to predict the characteristics of photofission fragments and the emissions of prompt particles for typical actinides including 232Th, 235, 238U and 240Pu. It is found that the 238U(γ, f) reaction is more suitable for producing neutron-rich nuclei compared to the 232Th(γ, f) reaction. In addition, the average multiplicity number of both np and γ p increases with the average excitation energy.

Search for possible fission modes at high excitation energies inFm254

Background: Shell effects have been found to influence both the compound nuclear fission (CNF) and quasifission processes. Besides quasifission processes, which fission modes remain active at excitation energy (${E}^{*}$) as high as 56 MeV should be investigated.Purpose: We investigate the signatures of fission modes in $^{254}\mathrm{Fm}$ populated by $^{16}\mathrm{O}\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}+\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}^{238}\mathrm{U}$ through the mass distribution (MD) and total kinetic energy distribution (TKED).Method: The mass--total kinetic energy distributions (M-TKED) of fission fragments of the reaction $^{16}\mathrm{O}\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}+\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}^{238}\mathrm{U}$ have been measured at two laboratory energies ${E}_{\text{lab}}=89$ and 101 MeV. The spontaneous fission (SF) of $^{254}\mathrm{Fm}$, one-dimensional (1D) fragment MD, and two-dimensional (2D) M-TKEDs of $^{16}\mathrm{O}\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}+\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}^{238}\mathrm{U}$ have been described by the multimodal random neck rupture (MM-RNR) model.Results: Channel probabilities and the characteristics of different fission modes are obtained and discussed in detail. The enhancement observed in the mass yield ($\ensuremath{\approx}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}2}\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}%$) in the region 60--70 u for the light fragments at ${E}^{*}\ensuremath{\approx}45$ MeV goes away at the higher ${E}^{*}\ensuremath{\approx}56$ MeV. The heavy fragments of S1 and S2 modes are found to be associated with $Z\ensuremath{\approx}53$ and $Z\ensuremath{\approx}56$ shells, respectively. The slope of asymmetric to symmetric fission yields (when plotted against ${E}^{*}$) of $^{16}\mathrm{O}\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}+\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}^{238}\mathrm{U}$ is found to be similar to that of previously reported $^{18}\mathrm{O}\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}+\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}^{208}\mathrm{Pb}$.Conclusions: Analysis of 2D M-TKED data by the MM-RNR model reveals the possible presence of fission modes in $^{16}\mathrm{O}\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}+\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}^{238}\mathrm{U}$. The liquid-drop-like broad symmetric SL mode is found to peak at a lower energy than predicted by the Viola systematic, which matches mostly with that of Standard 2 mode. No signature of asymmetric quasifission is observed. The MD widths show a linear dependence with the measured energies.

Experimental study of fast fission and quasifission in the Ca40+Pb208 reaction leading to the formation of the transfermium nucleus No248

Background: The stability of the transfermium nucleus against fission is mainly determined by the shell correction depending on its angular momentum and excitation energy.Purpose: The study of the fast fission process of the transfermium nucleus $^{248}\mathrm{No}$ and its dependence on the interaction energy and introduced angular momentum.Methods: Mass-energy distributions of the $^{248}\mathrm{No}$ fission fragments formed in the $^{40}\mathrm{Ca}$ + $^{208}\mathrm{Pb}$ reaction at energies above the Coulomb barrier have been measured using the double-arm time-of-flight spectrometer CORSET at the $^{40}\mathrm{Ca}$-beam energies of 223, 250, and 284 MeV.Results: The contribution of the fast fission process is determined from the calculations of the driving potential, taking into account shell effects and rotational energy and amounts to 39% and 61% at 250 and 284 MeV, respectively. The mass-energy distributions of the quasifission and fast fission fragments have been extracted by subtracting the mass-energy matrices associated with compound nucleus fission from those of all measured fissionlike events. The asymmetric fragments with masses 97 and 151 u were found to be the most probable in the fast fission of $^{248}\mathrm{No}$. With increasing $^{40}\mathrm{Ca}$ energy from 250 to 284 MeV the mass distributions of the fast fission fragments change slightly.Conclusions: Contrary to quasifission in which the fragments are focused mainly around the closed neutron or proton shells, the influence of known proton or neutron shells on the asymmetric mass distribution in the fast fission process was not observed.

Angular momentum transfer in multinucleon transfer channels of O18+Np237

The angular momentum of a primary excited compound nucleus produced in multinucleon transfer reaction is an important quantity to evaluate cross sections to synthesize neutron-rich heavy-element nuclei as well as for surrogate reaction studies. The mechanism is, however, not enough understood due to the lack of detailed experimental data. In the present study, we determined the angular momentum of primary excited nuclei, $^{237,238,239}\mathrm{Np}, ^{238,239,240}\mathrm{Pu}$, and $^{239,240,241}\mathrm{Am}$, produced in the multinucleon transfer channels of the $^{18}\mathrm{O}+^{237}\mathrm{Np}$ reaction. With this aim, angular distributions of fission fragments with respect to the axis perpendicular to the reaction plane were measured for each compound nucleus. The distributions show an anisotropy exhibiting an enhanced yield on the reaction plane. They are well reproduced by a saddle-point model, from which the average angular momentum is derived in the model framework. The angular momentum increases with the compound-nucleus mass, thus the number of nucleons exchanged, but shows a saturating trend toward heavier compound nuclei. These results are the first ones to point to the dependence of the angular momentum on the transfer channels.
