Applications of Nijenhuis Geometry V: Geodesic Equivalence and Finite-Dimensional Reductions of Integrable Quasilinear Systems

Next, we show that a certain evolutionary PDE system of hydrodynamic type constructed from L preserves the property of γ\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$\\gamma $$\\end{document} to be a g-geodesic. This implies that every metric g geodesically compatible with L gives us a finite-dimensional reduction of this PDE system. We show that its restriction onto the set of g-geodesics is naturally equivalent to the Poisson action of Rn\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$\\mathbb {R}^n$$\\end{document} on the cotangent bundle generated by the integrals coming from geodesic compatibility.

Dispersionless version of the constrained Toda hierarchy and symmetric radial Löwner equation

We study the dispersionless version of the recently introduced constrained Toda hierarchy. Like the Toda lattice itself, it admits three equivalent formulations: the formulation in terms of Lax equations, the formulation of the Zakharov-Shabat type and the formulation through the generating equation for the dispersionless limit of logarithm of the tau-function. We show that the dispersionless constrained Toda hierarchy describes conformal maps of reflection-symmetric planar domains to the exterior of the unit disc. We also find finite-dimensional reductions of the hierarchy and show that they are characterized by a differential equation of the L\"owner type which we call the symmetric radial L\"owner equation. It is also shown that solutions to the symmetric radial L\"owner equation are conformal maps of the exterior of the unit circle with two symmetric slits to the exterior of the unit circle.

A pointwise finite-dimensional reduction method for a fully coupled system of Einstein–Lichnerowicz type

We construct non-compactness examples for the fully coupled Einstein–Lichnerowicz constraint system in the focusing case. The construction is obtained by combining pointwise a priori asymptotic analysis techniques, finite-dimensional reductions and a fixed-point argument. More precisely, we perform a fixed-point procedure on the remainders of the expected blow-up decomposition. The argument consists of an involved finite-dimensional reduction coupled with a ping-pong method. To overcome the non-variational structure of the system, we work with remainders which belong to strong function spaces and not merely to energy spaces. Performing both the ping-pong argument and the finite-dimensional reduction therefore heavily relies on the a priori pointwise asymptotic techniques of the [Formula: see text] theory.

A Discrete Nonlinear Schrödinger-Type Hierarchy, Its Finite-Dimensional Reduction Analysis, and the Numerical Integration Scheme

We investigate the procedures of discretization of the integrable nonlinear Schrodinger dynamical system, well known as the Ablowitz–Ladik equation, the corresponding symplectic structures, and the finite-dimensional invariant reductions. We develop an efficient scheme of invariant reduction of the corresponding infinite system of ordinary differential equations to an equivalent finite system of ordinary differential equations with respect to the evolution parameter. We construct a finite set of recurrence algebraic regular relations that allows one to generate solutions of the discrete nonlinear Schrodinger dynamical system and discuss the related functional spaces of solutions. Finally, we analyze the Fourier-transform approach to the study of the set of solutions of the discrete nonlinear Schrodinger dynamical system and its functional-analytic aspects.

The fundamental class of smooth Kuranishi atlases with trivial isotropy

Kuranishi structures were introduced in the 1990s by Fukaya and Ono for the purpose of assigning a virtual cycle to moduli spaces of pseudoholomorphic curves that cannot be regularized by geometric methods. Their core idea was to build such a cycle by patching local finite dimensional reductions. The first sections of this paper discuss topological, algebraic and analytic challenges that arise in this program.We then develop a theory of Kuranishi atlases and cobordisms that transparently resolves these challenges, for simplicity concentrating on the case of trivial isotropy. In this case, we assign to a cobordism class of additive weak Kuranishi atlases both a virtual moduli cycle (VMC — a cobordism class of smooth manifolds) and a virtual fundamental class (VFC — a Cech homology class). We, moreover, show that such Kuranishi atlases exist on simple Gromov–Witten moduli spaces and develop the technical results in a manner that easily transfers to more general settings.

Large-Scale Description of Interacting One-Dimensional Bose Gases: Generalized Hydrodynamics Supersedes Conventional Hydrodynamics.

The theory of generalized hydrodynamics (GHD) was recently developed as a new tool for the study of inhomogeneous time evolution in many-body interacting systems with infinitely many conserved charges. In this Letter, we show that it supersedes the widely used conventional hydrodynamics (CHD) of one-dimensional Bose gases. We illustrate this by studying "nonlinear sound waves" emanating from initial density accumulations in the Lieb-Liniger model. We show that, at zero temperature and in the absence of shocks, GHD reduces to CHD, thus for the first time justifying its use from purely hydrodynamic principles. We show that sharp profiles, which appear in finite times in CHD, immediately dissolve into a higher hierarchy of reductions of GHD, with no sustained shock. CHD thereon fails to capture the correct hydrodynamics. We establish the correct hydrodynamic equations, which are finite-dimensional reductions of GHD characterized by multiple, disjoint Fermi seas. We further verify that at nonzero temperature, CHD fails at all nonzero times. Finally, we numerically confirm the emergence of hydrodynamics at zero temperature by comparing its predictions with a full quantum simulation performed using the NRG-TSA-abacus algorithm. The analysis is performed in the full interaction range, and is not restricted to either weak- or strong-repulsion regimes.

Building on our notions of topological Kuranishi atlases and perturbation constructions in the case of trivial isotropy, we develop a theory of Kuranishi atlases and cobordisms that transparently resolves the challenges posed by nontrivial isotropy. We assign to a cobordism class of weak Kuranishi atlases both a virtual moduli cycle (VMC - a cobordism class of weighted branched manifolds) and a virtual fundamental class (VFC - a Cech homology class).

The topology of Kuranishi atlases

Kuranishi structures were introduced in the 1990s by Fukaya and Ono for the purpose of assigning a virtual cycle to moduli spaces of pseudoholomorphic curves that cannot be regularized by geometric methods. Starting from the same core idea (patching local finite-dimensional reductions), we develop a theory of topological Kuranishi atlases and cobordisms that transparently resolves algebraic and topological challenges in this virtual regularization approach. It applies to any Kuranishi-type setting, for example, atlases with isotropy, boundary and corners, or lack of differentiable structure.

An algebraic approach to virtual fundamental cycles on moduli spaces of pseudo-holomorphic curves

We develop techniques for defining and working with virtual fundamental cycles on moduli spaces of pseudo-holomorphic curves which are not necessarily cut out transversally. Such techniques have the potential for applications as foundations for invariants in symplectic topology arising from "counting" pseudo-holomorphic curves. We introduce the notion of an *implicit atlas* on a moduli space, which is (roughly) a convenient system of local finite-dimensional reductions. We present a general intrinsic strategy for constructing a canonical implicit atlas on any moduli space of pseudo-holomorphic curves. The main technical step in applying this strategy in any particular setting is to prove appropriate gluing theorems. We require only topological gluing theorems, that is, smoothness of the transition maps between gluing charts need not be addressed. Our approach to virtual fundamental cycles is algebraic rather than geometric (in particular, we do not use perturbation). Sheaf-theoretic tools play an important role in setting up our functorial algebraic "VFC package". We illustrate the methods we introduce by giving definitions of Gromov--Witten invariants and Hamiltonian Floer homology over $\mathbb Q$ for general symplectic manifolds. Our framework generalizes to the $S^1$-equivariant setting, and we use $S^1$-localization to calculate Hamiltonian Floer homology. The Arnold conjecture (as treated by Floer, Hofer--Salamon, Ono, Liu--Tian, Ruan, and Fukaya--Ono) is a well-known corollary of this calculation.

New Elliptic Solutions of the Yang–Baxter Equation

We consider finite-dimensional reductions of an integral operator with the elliptic hypergeometric kernel describing the most general known solution of the Yang-Baxter equation with a rank 1 symmetry algebra. The reduced R-operators reproduce at their bottom the standard Baxter's R-matrix for the 8-vertex model and Sklyanin's L-operator. The general formula has a remarkably compact form and yields new elliptic solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation based on the finite-dimensional representations of the elliptic modular double. The same result is also derived using the fusion formalism.

LÖwner evolution and finite-dimensional reductions of integrable systems

The Loewner equation is known as a one-dimensional reduction of the Benney chain as well as the dispersionless KP hierarchy. We propose a reverse process showing that time splitting in the Loewner or the Loewner-Kufarev equation leads to some known integrable systems.

Combined algorithm for finding conservation laws and implectic operators for the Boussinesq-Burgers nonlinear dynamical system and its finite dimensional reductions

In the article the combined algorithm for finding conservation laws and implectic operators has been proposed. Using the Novikov-Bogoyavlensky method the finite dimensional reductions have been found. The structure of invariant submanifolds has been examined. Having analyzed phase portraits of Hamiltonian systems, partial periodical solutions have been found.

Hypoelliptic Diffusion and Human Vision: A Semidiscrete New Twist

This paper presents a semi-discrete alternative to the theory of neurogeometry of vision, due to Citti, Petitot and Sarti. We propose a new ingredient, namely working on the group of translations and discrete rotations $SE(2,N)$. The theoretical side of our study relates the stochastic nature of the problem with the Moore group structure of $SE(2,N)$. Harmonic analysis over this group leads to very simple finite dimensional reductions. We then apply these ideas to the inpainting problem which is reduced to the integration of a completely parallelizable finite set of Mathieu-type diffusions (indexed by the dual of $SE(2,N)$ in place of the points of the Fourier plane, which is a drastic reduction). The integration of the the Mathieu equations can be performed by standard numerical methods for elliptic diffusions and leads to a very simple and efficient class of inpainting algorithms. We illustrate the performances of the method on a series of deeply corrupted images.

Optimal Uncertainty Quantification

We propose a rigorous framework for uncertainty quantification (UQ) in which the UQ objectives and its assumptions/information set are brought to the forefront. This framework, which we call optimal uncertainty quantification (OUQ), is based on the observation that, given a set of assumptions and information about the problem, there exist optimal bounds on uncertainties: these are obtained as values of well-defined optimization problems corresponding to extremizing probabilities of failure, or of deviations, subject to the constraints imposed by the scenarios compatible with the assumptions and information. In particular, this framework does not implicitly impose inappropriate assumptions, nor does it repudiate relevant information. Although OUQ optimization problems are extremely large, we show that under general conditions they have finite-dimensional reductions. As an application, we develop optimal concentration inequalities (OCI) of Hoeffding and McDiarmid type. Surprisingly, these results show that uncertainties in input parameters, which propagate to output uncertainties in the classical sensitivity analysis paradigm, may fail to do so if the transfer functions (or probability distributions) are imperfectly known. We show how, for hierarchical structures, this phenomenon may lead to the nonpropagation of uncertainties or information across scales. In addition, a general algorithmic framework is developed for OUQ and is tested on the Caltech surrogate model for hypervelocity impact and on the seismic safety assessment of truss structures, suggesting the feasibility of the framework for important complex systems. The introduction of this paper provides both an overview of the paper and a self-contained minitutorial on the basic concepts and issues of UQ.

Soliton solutions of a Calogero model in a harmonic potential

A classical Calogero model in an external harmonic potential is known to be integrable for any number of particles. We consider here reductions which play a role of the ‘soliton’ solutions of the model. We obtain these solutions both for the model with finite number of particles and in a hydrodynamic limit. In the latter limit, the model is described by hydrodynamic equations on continuous density and velocity fields. Soliton solutions in this case are finite-dimensional reductions of the hydrodynamic model and describe the propagation of lumps of density and velocity in the nontrivial background.

Isomonodromic deformations and twisted Yangians arising in Teichmüller theory

In this paper we build a link between the Teichmüller theory of hyperbolic Riemann surfaces and isomonodromic deformations of linear systems whose monodromy group is the Fuchsian group associated to the given hyperbolic Riemann surface by the Poincaré uniformization. In the case of a one-sheeted hyperboloid with n orbifold points we show that the Poisson algebra Dn of geodesic length functions is the semiclassical limit of the twisted q-Yangian Yq′(on) for the orthogonal Lie algebra on defined by Molev, Ragoucy and Sorba. We give a representation of the braid-group action on Dn in terms of an adjoint matrix action. We characterize two types of finite-dimensional Poissonian reductions and give an explicit expression for the generating function of their central elements. Finally, we interpret the algebra Dn as the Poisson algebra of monodromy data of a Frobenius manifold in the vicinity of a non-semi-simple point.

The reductions of the dispersionless 2D Toda hierarchy and their Hamiltonian structures

We study finite-dimensional reductions of the dispersionless 2D Toda hierarchy showing that the consistency conditions for such reductions are given by a system of radial Loewner equations. We then construct their Hamiltonian structures, following an approach proposed by Ferapontov.

Constrained reductions of two-dimensional dispersionless Toda hierarchy, Hamiltonian structure, and interface dynamics

Finite-dimensional reductions of the two-dimensional dispersionless Toda hierarchy constrained by the “string equation” are studied. These include solutions determined by polynomial, rational, or logarithmic functions, which are of interest in relation to the “Laplacian growth” or Hele-Shaw problem governing interface dynamics. The consistency of such reductions is proved, and the Hamiltonian structure of the reduced dynamics is derived. The Poisson structure of the rationally reduced dispersionless Toda hierarchies is also derived.

On the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian Aspects of Infinite-Dimensional Dynamical Systems and their Finite-Dimensional Reductions

Some aspects of the description of Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalisms naturally arising from the invariance structure of given nonlinear dynamical systems on an infinite-dimensional functional manifold are presented. The basic ideas used to formulate the canonical symplectic structure are borrowed from the Cartan theory of differential systems on associated jet-manifolds. The symmetry structure reduced on the invariant submanifolds of critical points of some nonlocal Euler-Lagrange functional is described thoroughly for both differential and differential discrete dynamical systems. The Hamiltonian representation for a hierarchy of Lax-type equations on a dual space to the Lie algebra of integro-differential operators with matrix coefficients, extended by evolutions for eigenfunctions and adjoint eigenfunctions of the corresponding spectral problems, is obtained via some special Backlund transformation. A relationship between this hierarchy and Lax-integrable spatially two-dimensional systems is studied.

Comparison of finite-dimensional reductions in smooth variational problems with symmetries

We prove the symmetric version of the comparison theorem and show the global equivalence of the Lyapunov-Schmidt and Morse-Bott key functions for the potential of a natural mechanical system with symmetries.
