Real time monitoring of heavy metal adulteration in biodiesel using Arduino UNO platform@A promising multi-purpose stimuli-responsive azomethine based chemoreceptor for hierarchical tri-ionic sensing

The presence of metallic adulteration even in very trace level may lead to deleterious impact on the biodiesel quality and ultimately may be responsible for the dropping down of system efficiency, which necessitates the trace level recognition of heavy metal adulteration from biodiesel. In this context, herein using an azomethine functionalized chromogenic chemoreceptor, 1-((E)-(4-hydroxyphenylimino) methyl) napthalen-2-ol (HMN) has been reported for the selective chemodosimetric recognition of Cu2+ with a lower detection threshold of 7.8 ppb via distinct chromogenic variation of HMN. In addition to this, it has also exhibited selective and reversible naked eye chromogenic sensing behaviour towards F− (LOD=160 ppb) and Al3+ (LOD=48 ppb) at very trace level, which is quite lower than the WHO permissible limit. Distinct chromogenic recognition of F− by HMN proceeds via strong intermolecular hydrogen bonding mediated improved intramolecular charge transfer. The spectroscopic response of HMN in alternate presence and absence of the targeted analytes made it suitable to formulate AND-NOT-XNOR-NAND-OR gate based ‘Castle-like’ complicated logic circuitry. In-vitro cell imaging study using A549, human lung carcinoma cell line attests intracellular recognition capability of HMN, demonstrating its effectual bio-medicinal applications. Interestingly, inspired by the capability of HMN towards recognition of copper from biodiesel specimen, an RGB-assisted device comprised of TCS color sensor and an Arduino UNO 8-bit microcontroller has been developed for real-time quantitative analysis of the biodiesel adulteration. Going one step further, utilization of lab-on-a-box based prototype to monitor the concentration-dependent chromogenic fluctuation via RGB analysis is undoubtedly beneficial for the determination of copper adulteration in biodiesel sample. The presently developed chemoreceptor can thus be regarded as a valuable addition in the field of supramolecular chemistry as well as a significant initiative towards regular monitoring of the biodiesel quality control parameters as a part of sustainable environment.

Hypervalent Iodine(III) Mediated Halogen Bonded Supramolecular Chiral System with Cholesteryl Naphthalimides.

Halogen bonding acknowledged as a noteworthy weak interaction, has gained growing recognition in the field of supramolecular chemistry. In this study, we selected structurally rigid diaryliodonium ions (I(III)) with two biaxial σ-holes as halogen-bond donors, to bind with three chiral acceptor molecules bearing cholesteryl and naphthalimides with distinct geometries. The abundant carbonyl oxygen atoms in side-arm substituents function as multiple acceptors for halogen bonding. The self-aggregation of chiral acceptor molecules demonstrates adaptiveness to solvent media, evidenced by the inversion of the Cotton effect and the morphological evolution from spherical to rod-like nanoarchitectures in different solvent systems. The distinct geometries of the acceptor molecules conferred various binding modes with I(III). The introduction of I(III) as a halogen-bond donor regulates the aggregation of the donors, achieving amplification of chiroptical signals and inheriting solvent responsiveness from the self-aggregated assembly. This study successfully utilized rational structural design and multimodal control strategies to achieve regulation of supramolecular chirality.

A Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework Equipped with a Molecular Nanovalve.

The concept of a molecular nanovalve is applied to a synthesized biocompatible hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF), termed RSS-140, to load, trap, and subsequently release an antioxidant on command. Specifically, we exploit the pore windows of RSS-140 (i.e., β-CD cavities) to first load and trap the antioxidant, Trolox, within the internal pores of the HOF (Trolox⊂RSS-140) and, to prevent it from leaching, utilize supramolecular chemistry to complex azobenzene (Azo) with β-CD (Trolox⊂Azo@RSS-140). The molecular nanovalve is fully realized upon exposing Trolox⊂Azo@RSS-140 to UV light with a specific wavelength, which induces Azo isomerization, Azo decomplexation from β-CD, and subsequent release of Trolox from the pores of RSS-140. The biocompatibility and nontoxicity of Trolox⊂Azo@RSS-140, together with the absolute control over the nanovalve opening, were established to yield a system that safely and slowly releases Trolox for longer-lasting antioxidant efficacy. As the field of supramolecular chemistry is rich with similar systems and many such systems can be used as building blocks to construct HOFs or other extended framework materials, we envision the molecular nanovalve concept to be applied widely for controllably delivering molecular cargo for diverse applications.

Naphthalene Diimide-Based Metallacage as an Artificial Ion Channel for Chloride Ion Transport.

Developing synthetic molecular devices for controlling ion transmembrane transport is a promising research field in supramolecular chemistry. These artificial ion channels provide models to study ion channel diseases and have huge potential for therapeutic applications. Compared with self-assembled ion channels constructed by intermolecular weak interactions between smaller molecules or cyclic compounds, metallacage-based ion channels have well-defined structures and can exist as single components in the phospholipid bilayer. A naphthalene diimide-based artificial chloride ion channel is constructed through efficient subcomponent self-assembly and its selective ion transport activity in large unilamellar vesicles and the planar lipid bilayer membrane by fluorescence and ion-current measurements is investigated. Molecular dynamics simulations and density functional theory calculations show that the metallacage spans the entire phospholipid bilayer as an unimolecular ion transport channel. This channel transports chloride ions across the cell membrane, which disturbs the ion balance of cancer cells and inhibits the growth of cancer cells at low concentrations.

Strategies for Constructing Macrocyclic Arene-Based Color-Tunable Supramolecular Luminescent Materials.

Over the past decades, supramolecular luminescent materials (SLMs) have attracted considerable attention due to their dynamic noncovalent interactions, versatile functions, and intriguing applications in many research fields. From construction to application, great efforts and progress have been made in color-tunable SLMs in recent years. In order to realize multicolor luminescence, various design strategies have been proposed. Macrocyclic chemistry, one of the brightest jewels in the field of supramolecular chemistry, has played a crucial role in the construction of stimuli-responsive and emission-tunable SLMs. Moreover, the flexible and tunable conformation and multiple noncovalent complexation sites of the macrocyclic arenes (MAs) afford a new opportunity to create such dynamic smart luminescent materials. Inspired by our reported work on the color-tunable supramolecular crystalline assemblies modulated by the conformation of naphth[4]arene, this Concept provides a summary of the latest developments in the construction of color-tunable MA-based SLMs, accompanied by the various construction strategies. The aim is to provide researchers with a new perspective to construct color-tunable SLMs with fascinating functions.

High-order layered self-assembled multicavity metal--organic capsules and anti-cooperative host-multi-guest chemistry.

The construction and application of metal-organic cages with accessible internal cavities have witnessed rapid development, however, the precise synthesis of complex metal-organic capsules with multiple cavities and achievement of multi-guest encapsulation, and further in-depth comprehension of host-multi-guest recognition remain a great challenge. Just like building LEGO blocks, herein, we have constructed a series of high-order layered metal-organic architectures of generation n (n = 1/2/3/4 is also the number of cavities) by multi-component coordination-driven self-assembly using porphyrin-containing tetrapodal ligands (like plates), multiple parallel-podal ligands (like clamps) and metal ions (like nodes). Importantly, these high-order assembled structures possessed different numbers of rigid and separate cavities formed by overlapped porphyrin planes with specific gaps. The host-guest experiments and convincing characterization proved that these capsules G2-G4 could serve as host structures to achieve multi-guest recognition and unprecedentedly encapsulate up to four C60 molecules. More interestingly, these capsules revealed negative cooperation behavior in the process of multi-guest recognition, which provides a new platform to further study complicated host-multi-guest interaction in the field of supramolecular chemistry.

Stability of [10-12]cycloparaphenylene complexes with pristine fullerenes C76,78,84 and endohedral metallofullerenes M3N@C78,80.

[n]Cycloparaphenylenes ([n]CPPs) are strained macrocycles, comprising only sp2-hybridized carbon atoms. In recent years, [n]CPPs have become of great research interest in the field of supramolecular chemistry since their special structure enables the formation of novel host-guest complexes. In this work, we investigate the gas-phase chemistry of noncovalent complexes of [10-12]CPP with the pristine fullerenes C76/78/84 and the endohedral metallofullerenes (EMFs) Sc3N@D3h-C78, Sc3N@D5h-C80 and M3N@Ih-C80 (M = Sc, Y, Lu, Gd). The [1 : 1] complexes with [10-12]CPP are detected as radical cations. The stability and charge distributions of these complexes are studied using energy-resolved collision-induced dissociation (ER-CID). Our results assess the size complementarity, the influence of fullerene symmetry and size as well as the role of the metal size inside the EMF on the binding affinity and complex stability. Two main trends in complex stability have been found: First, [10-12]CPP form more stable complexes with EMFs than with pristine fullerenes and second, all complexes of EMFs with the C80 skeleton show similar stability despite the different metal clusters encapsulated. Another major finding is the fact that [11]CPP is generally the most suitable host for fullerenes with a C76/78/80/84 skeleton. Considering the charge distributions, we observe the existence of two different fragmentation channels for complexes with EMFs where the radical cation is either located at the CPP or at the EMF: (1) [n]CPP+˙ + EMF and (2) [n]CPP + EMF+˙. This behavior allows a clear distinction of the cage isomers ([11]CPP⊃Sc3N@Ih-C80)+˙ and ([11]CPP⊃Sc3N@D5h-C80)+˙ in the MS2 experiment. The experimental results are accompanied by density functional theory (DFT) calculations of ionization potentials (IPs) and fragmentation energies. The computational results fully confirm the measured order of complex stabilities and explain the prevalence of EMF or CPP signals in the spectra by the trend in ionization potentials.

Anion Recognition in Solution: Insights from Thermodynamics and Ultrafast Structural Dynamics.

Anion recognition through noncovalent interactions stands as an emerging field in supramolecular chemistry, exerting a profound influence on the regulation of biological functions. Herein, the thermodynamics of complexation between sodium cyanate (NaOCN) and calix[4]pyrrole was systematically investigated by linear and nonlinear IR spectroscopy, highlighting enthalpy changes as the dominant driving force. The overall orientational relaxation of bound anion can be described by an Arrhenius-type activated process, yielding an activation energy of 15.0 ± 1.0 kJ mol-1. The structural dynamics of contact ion pairs (CIPs) formed between Na+ and OCN- in solution showed a negligible temperature effect, suggesting entropy changes as the principal governing factor. Further analysis revealed that anion recognition in solution is mediated by conformational changes of the receptor and collective rearrangement of hydrogen bond dynamics. This study, framed within the paradigms of thermodynamics and ultrafast structural dynamics, substantially advances our comprehension of the microscopic mechanisms underlying anion recognition in the realm of supramolecular chemistry.

Design, synthesis and evaluation of a bifunctional receptor based on calix[4]arene bearing benzoxazolinone group

We have synthesized and evaluated a calix[4]arene-based bifunctional receptor containing amide and benzoxazolinone units for ionic recognition. Absorption properties of this receptor have been studied, and the results revealed selectivity in the recognition of copper (Cu2+), fluoride (F−), cyanide (CN−), and acetate (CH3COO−) ions. Its binding ability and the mechanism as bifunctional receptor were elucidated using advanced techniques such as 1HNMR and FT-IR analysis. The results showed that receptor amide bridge played a critical role in the binding of copper (II), acetate, cyanide, and fluoride ions. These findings suggest that calix[4]arene-based bifunctional receptor has promising potential as an ion sensor for detecting these specific ions in environmental and biological samples. This research contributes to the ongoing exploration of bifunctional receptors and their potential applications in the field of supramolecular chemistry.

Exploring the Impact of Intermolecular Interactions on the Glassy Phase Formation of Twist-Bend Liquid Crystal Dimers: Insights from Dielectric Studies

The formation of the nematic to twist-bend nematic (NTB) phase has emerged as a fascinating phenomenon in the field of supramolecular chemistry, based on complex intermolecular interactions. Through a careful analysis of molecular structures and dynamics, we elucidate how these intermolecular interactions drive the complex twist-bend modulation observed in the NTB. The study employs broadband dielectric spectroscopy spanning frequencies from 10 to 2 × 109 Hz to investigate the molecular orientational dynamics within the glass-forming thioether-linked cyanobiphenyl liquid crystal dimers, namely, CBSC7SCB and CBSC7OCB. The experimental findings align with theoretical expectations, revealing the presence of two distinct relaxation processes contributing to the dielectric permittivity of these dimers. The low-frequency relaxation mode is attributed to an “end-over-end rotation” of the dipolar groups parallel to the director. The high-frequency relaxation mode is associated with precessional motions of the dipolar groups about the director. Various models are employed to describe the temperature-dependent behavior of the relaxation times for both modes. Particularly, the critical-like description via the dynamic scaling model seems to give not only quite good numerical fittings, but also provides a consistent physical picture of the orientational dynamics in accordance with findings from infrared (IR) spectroscopy. Here, as the longitudinal correlations of dipoles intensify, the m1 mode experiences a sudden upsurge in enthalpy, while the m2 mode undergoes continuous changes, displaying critical mode coupling behavior. Interestingly, both types of molecular motion exhibit a strong cooperative interplay within the lower temperature range of the NTB phase, evolving in tandem as the material’s temperature approaches the glass transition point. Consequently, both molecular motions converge to determine the glassy dynamics, characterized by a shared glass transition temperature, Tg.

Complex Energy Landscapes of Self-Assembled Vesicles.

The field of supramolecular chemistry has witnessed tremendous progress in bringing the system away from equilibrium for traditionally inaccessible structures and functions. Vesicular assemblies with complex energy landscapes and pathways, which are reminiscent of diverse cellular vesicles like exosomes, remain exceedingly rare. Here, relying on the activation of oligo(ethylene glycol) (OEG) interdigitation and the encoded conformational freedom in monodisperse Janus dendrimers, we reveal a rich landscape and a pathway selection of distinct vesicles. The interdigitation can be selectively switched on and off using temperature ramps, and the critical temperatures can be further determined by molecular design. Our findings suggest that synthetic vesicles, with different energy states and unexpected transition pathways, emulate dynamic cellular vesicles in nature. We anticipate that vesicles with an activated OEG corona conformation will open new routes for nanomedicine and advanced materials.

Synthesis of chromone-based thiosemicarbazone as selective chemosensor for cyanide ion and its DFT calculation studies

ABSTRACT Chemosensors, for the recognition of anions have gained great attention in the field of supramolecular chemistry. Novel chromone-based colorimetric chemosensors, SN-1 and SN-2 are reported for the detection of F− and CN− ions. The structural characterization was done by1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Colorimetric properties of the chemosensors were investigated in presence of different species (F−, AcO−, Br−, ClO− 4, Cl−, HSO4 −, I−, SCN−, and CN−). The chemosensors SN-1 and SN-2 displayed high selectivity towards CN− and F− ions. The limits of detection for SN-1 and SN-2 were found to be 5.5 × 10−8 and 3.3 × 10−8 for the CN− ion respectively. Chemosensor SN-2 showed greater response towards F− ion with low limit of detection 2.8 × 10−8 and its binding constant was assessed to be 2.5 × 104. The chemosensors could be used to detect the F− ion in real samples of toothpaste and in test strips. Density functional theory (DFT) study supported our experimental findings.

Encapsulating Semiconductor Quantum Dots in Supramolecular Cages Enables Ultrafast Guest-Host Electron and Vibrational Energy Transfer.

In the field of supramolecular chemistry, host-guest systems have been extensively explored to encapsulate a wide range of substrates, owing to emerging functionalities in nanoconfined space that cannot be achieved in dilute solutions. However, host-guest chemistry is still limited to encapsulation of small guests. Herein, we construct a water-soluble metallo-supramolecular hexagonal prism with a large hydrophobic cavity by anchoring multiple polyethylene glycol chains onto the building blocks. Then, assembled prisms are able to encapsulate quantum dots (QDs) with diameters of less than 5.0 nm. Furthermore, we find that the supramolecular cage around each QD strongly modifies the photophysics of the QD by universally increasing the rates of QD relaxation processes via ultrafast electron and vibrational energy transfer. Taken together, these efforts expand the scope of substrates in host-guest systems and provide a new approach to tune the optical properties of QDs.

High‐pressure‐induced multiple phase transitions of parabanic acid

AbstractIn situ high‐pressure Raman spectroscopy experiments have been performed to investigate the structural changes of parabanic acid (PA) up to ~12.0 GPa. The analysis of Raman spectroscopy reveals that PA undergoes two phase transitions. The collapse of spacing between molecular layers and the distortion of hydrogen‐bonding networks almost in ac‐plane are the main causes of the first phase transition above 2.1 GPa. The changes of Fermi resonance parameters also provide evidence for the first phase transitions. The second phase transition around 4.0 GPa can attribute to the further reduction of the molecular interlayer spacing and the resulting distortion of hydrogen‐bonding network. First‐principle calculations and Hirshfeld surfaces further confirm the analysis of the experimental results. The analysis of high‐pressure phase transition contributes a better explanation for the high‐pressure phase transition process of layered supramolecular materials with hydrogen‐bond self‐assembly. This study provides the possibility of two new polymorphs for PA under high pressure and is helpful for broadening its potential application of this material, especially in the field of supramolecular chemistry.

Self-assembly of achiral building blocks into chiral cyclophanes using non-directional interactions.

The diastereoselective assembly of achiral constituents through a single spontaneous process into complex covalent architectures bearing multiple stereogenic elements still remains a challenge for synthetic chemists. Here, we show that such an extreme level of control can be achieved by implementing stereo-electronic information on synthetic organic building blocks and templates and that non-directional interactions (i.e., electrostatic and steric interactions) can transfer this information to deliver, after self-assembly, high-molecular weight macrocyclic species carrying up to 16 stereogenic elements. Beyond the field of supramolecular chemistry, this proof of concept should stimulate the on-demand production of highly structured polyfunctional architectures.

Molecular duplexes featuring NH···N, CH···O and CH···π interactions in solid-state self-assembly of triazine-based compounds.

Synthetic supramolecular structures constructed through the cooperative action of numerous non-covalent forces are highly desirable as models to unravel and understand the complexity of systems created in nature via self-assembly. Taking advantage of the low cost of 2,4,6-trichloro-1,3,5-triazine (cyanuric chloride) and the sequential nucleophilic substitution reactions with almost all types of nucleophiles, a series of six structurally related novel s-triazine derivatives 1-6 were synthesized and structurally characterized based on their physical, spectral and crystallographic data. The solid-state structures of all the six compounds showed intriguing and unique molecular duplexes featuring NH···N, CH···O and CH···π interactions. Careful analysis of different geometric parameters of the involved H-bonds indicates that they are linear, significant and are therefore responsible for guiding the three-dimensional structure of these compounds in the solid state. The prevalence of sextuple hydrogen bond array-driven molecular duplexes and the possibility of structural modifications on the s-triazine ring render these novel triazine derivatives 1-6 attractive as a platform to create heteroduplex constructs and their subsequent utility in the field of supramolecular chemistry and crystal engineering.

The Scholl Reaction as a Powerful Tool for Synthesis of Curved Polycyclic Aromatics.

The past decade has witnessed remarkable success in the synthesis of curved polycyclic aromatics through Scholl reactions which enable oxidative aryl-aryl coupling even in company with the introduction of significant steric strain. These curved polycyclic aromatics are not only unique objects of structural organic chemistry in relation to the nature of aromaticity but also play an important role in bottom-up approaches to precise synthesis of nanocarbons of unique topology. Moreover, they have received considerable attention in the fields of supramolecular chemistry and organic functional materials because of their interesting properties and promising applications. Despite the great success of Scholl reactions in synthesis of curved polycyclic aromatics, the outcome of a newly designed substrate in the Scholl reaction still cannot be predicted in a generic and precise manner largely due to limited understanding on the reaction mechanism and possible rearrangement processes. This review provides an overview of Scholl reactions with a focus on their applications in synthesis of curved polycyclic aromatics with interesting structures and properties and aims to shed light on the key factors that affect Scholl reactions in synthesizing sterically strained polycyclic aromatics.

Size-Induced Highly Selective Synthesis of Organometallic Rectangular Macrocycles and Heterometallic Cage Based on Half-Sandwich Rhodium Building Block.

The controlled synthesis of organometallic supramolecular macrocycles cages remains interesting and challenging work in the field of supramolecular chemistry. Here, two tetranuclear rectangular macrocycles and an octuclear cage were designed and synthesized utilizing a rigid and functionalized pillar linker, 2,6-bis(pyridin-4-yl)-1,7-dihydrobenzo [1,2-d:4,5-d′]diimidazole (BBI4PY) based on three half-sandwich rhodium building blocks bearing different sizes. X-ray crystallography in combination with 1H NMR spectroscopy elucidated that the two building blocks with shorter spacers only result in rectangular macrocycles. However, the building block of bulkier size to avoid the π-π stacking interactions between two ligands BBI4PY led to the formation of an octuclear cage complex. The latter cage contains two types of metal ions, namely Rh3+ and Cu2+, showing significant characteristics of heterogeneous metal-assembling compounds. In addition, the cage accommodates two free isopropyl ether solvent molecules, thus displaying host–guest behavior.

Alkyl chain length regulated diverse 2D polymorphic self-assembly of benzothiadiazole-based π-conjugated fluorophore

Structural diversity induced by the chain-length effect in the field of two-dimensional molecular self-assembly has attracted lots of attention. In this study, the self-assembly behaviors of benzothiadiazole-based fluorophore (FHP-C12) were investigated in different solvents by scanning tunneling microscopy. The STM observations display that the self-assemblies of FHP-C12 have obvious solvent and concentration dependence. At the long-chain n-alkanes (n-tridecane, n-tetradecane)/graphite interface owing to the space matching, the grid-like and X-shaped structures are formed successively from high concentration to low concentration. Whereas the X-shaped structure is not observed at the n-dodecane/graphite interface due to the weak adsorption of solvents. When using octanoic acid and heptanoic acid as the solvents, a new H-shaped pattern is observed, due to the coadsorption of solvents. Moreover, we compare the self-assembly patterns of molecules with carbon chain length of 14 (FHP-C14) at the n-tetradecane/graphite interface. Although these two molecules only differ in the length of alkyl chains, the STM results show great differences, which indicates that the length of alkyl chains can control the self-assembly of benzothiadiazole-based systems. This work not only provides an efficient method for fabricating complex nanostructures, but also helps to promote the study of the chain-length effect in the field of supramolecular chemistry.
