The aim of this research is to analyze the forms of code switching and code mixing in the novel "Don't Go Lara" by Mira W. This research uses qualitative research methods. The qualitative type chosen is descriptive. This type was chosen because research data is described descriptively which requires solving based on existing data, analyzing and interpreting. It is impossible for language variations to occur in a society because there are no differences between people. Sociolinguistics is concerned with the use of a particular language, while sociology focuses on the social factors that influence a language or dialect. The focus of analysis in the field of sociolinguistics is who speaks, what language is used, to whom it is spoken, when and for what purpose it is spoken, and what the topic of conversation is. Dedi was standing on the other side of the road. Lara waved at him. "yesss...!" Dedi exclaimed while jumping high with joy. Based on the dialogue, it shows that the word yes comes from English which means yes. So it can be concluded that the word yess is a form of code switching from Indonesian to English. “Heru is not a profiteer! He's a salesman!” Based on the dialogue excerpt, it shows that there is a mixing of two languages ​​in one sentence, namely Indonesian and English. So it can be concluded that someone can use two languages ​​in one dialogue or can be called code mixing.

Along with the communicative functions of language, there is always a social function to show the role played by language in the society. This function can be seen in the field of sociolinguistics through code-switching. The current study aims to investigate the motivations behind code-switching between Arabic and English by Arab young people in their daily conversations from a sociolinguistic perspective. The researcher employed a qualitative analytical approach to obtain the results. Thus, this research paper focuses on analyzing and discussing semi-structured interviews with Arab young people to gain information on code-switching in their daily conversations. Data was collected through conducting the interviews and transcribing them for analysis. The findings of the study indicate that there are five motivations behind Arabic-English code switching among Arab young people; excluding group members, showing social status, expressing literacy, expressing belonging to a certain group and finally affirming their identity. The current study is meant to contribute to the development of the sociolinguistic field when it comes to the Arabic-English language pair.

DYNAMICS OF NICKNAMES OF RUSSIAN SERVICEMEN

Currently, the life of military societas is of an increased interest in society in various issues, in particular – the peculiarities of communication of the language personality of the said society’s representative. The article is devoted to the analysis of the variability of nicknames of modern Russian servicemen. The research material included the linguistic and lexis obtained by questioning and by direct interviewing of cadets of Russian military higher educational institutions in two stages with a time interval of 8 years, which allows drawing objective and reliable conclusions on the nature of the dynamics of the existence of nickname nominations in military societas. Semantic groups of nicknames, characteristics of the structure, features of functioning, psychological attitude of the carriers and the environment are given. Based on the comparative analysis, conclusions were drawn about the similar and distinctive features of existence and the variability of unofficial military anthroponyms. The results of the study make it possible to identify such features of a language personality as the specificity of human perception in military communication, priority characteristics of the personality as a whole, and features of associative thinking. The research materials can be used to conduct seminars and special courses in both civilian and military higher educational institutions. The experience presented is also important for further research in the field of onomastics, sociolinguistics and linguoculturology.

Empirical Approaches to Portuguese Linguistics - New insights from studies in various areas of grammar

Over the last two decades, empirical methods have become increasingly prominent in linguistics. Even traditionally more introspective theoretical frameworks have begun to embrace empirical methods to test their hypotheses. This special collection unites works applying state of the art empirical methods to the study of Portuguese and its varieties, to highlight the applicability of these methods to Portuguese linguistics. In doing so, this collection aims to show the potential and the possible limitations of these methods. This special collection brings together contributions on different varieties of Portuguese from the subfields of phonology, morpho-syntax, syntax and semantics, using a variety of empirical methods: The methods range from classic corpus linguistics and sociolinguistic field methods to psycholinguistic experiments. The aim of this collection is to illustrate how these methods can be applied to the study of Portuguese in all linguistic subfields. By explicitly addressing how empirical methods contribute to furthering our understanding of Portuguese linguistics, we want to increase awareness for empirical methods and their applicability to the study of Portuguese, and ultimately encourage researchers to make greater use of them.

‘My dearest Clara … my dear friend’ – Personal Names and direct address in Mary Hamilton’s private correspondence

Abstract In the eighteenth century, a period dominated by linguistic correctness, propriety and etiquette, appropriate forms of address are a customary feature in correspondence and a key means by which individuals are able to construct their social identity in light of their relationships with others. In this context, and framed within the fields of historical sociolinguistics and historical sociopragmatics, this paper explores the role of direct address as a socially-governed linguistic practice and as an index of politeness, and the focus lies in intra-speaker variation in the use of personal names and honorifics in the opening, body and subscription parts of the letter. The study is based on a set of 170 private letters written by Mary Hamilton (1756–1816), courtier, diarist and a member of the Bluestocking circle, and the analysis considers notions traditionally connected with pragmatic language use such as distance, power and politeness, bearing in mind other content-dependent factors as well. Overall, the research presented here aims to contribute to a growing body of literature which understands ego-documents as providing a window onto language and society.

‘Slavic Irishness’ and the Fluidity of National Identity in Finnegans Wake

ABSTRACT This article adopts a sociolinguistic approach to multilingualism within James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake (1939), paying attention to how, in Book 2, Chapter 3, two Irish soldiers called Butt and Taff extensively code-switch into numerous Slavonic languages (for which Bulgarian serves as the focus of this study), and how they do so for the purposes of bonding (through humour) and expressing their complex identities as ‘Slavic Irishmen’. The study looks in depth at the Wake’s extreme levels of multilingualism (with more than 70 languages present within the work) and how a sociolinguistic approach to reading it – one which specifically employs terminology and research drawn from the academic field of sociolinguistics – can provide fresh and intriguing academic perspectives on it. Within this article, I argue that this unique approach may ‘humanize’ Butt and Taff for the reader and that these figures may even be seen to acquire identities akin to ‘real-life’ personas through their use of code-switching. This makes them unlike the ‘avatars’ or ‘siglas’ that critics in Wake studies normally identify in the work.

Multilingual views of food service signage

The paper considers the multilingual views of food services signage. The food ser-vice sign boards are selected as the research topic due to their sociocultural relevance: food is viewed as part of national cultural codes and international universals. The paper aims to determine the variants of multilingual names of food service companies (cafes, restaurants) and the attitude to the respective names' variants from the part of various categories of the population. The method-ology uses a mixed-method approach, combining theoretical analysis of the academic sources, empirical categorization of food signages, interviews of various catego-ries of respondents, and statistical processing of the respondents' data and their replies. The research results have made it possible to identify major trends in the language repertoire of food service signages, identify different groups of the re-spondents' population regarding their attitudes towards the linguistics repertoire of food service sign boards, and outline promising communicative practices in the field. The results can be used for linguists' training in the field of sociolinguis-tics for advertising specialists-to-be education regarding the potential and bound-aries of the multilingual landscape concerning its communicative, pragmatic, and ideological values. Moreover, the collected data can be used as a didactic back-ground for translators' training focusing on the translanguaging phenomenon.

Outlining the context of increased attention to linguistic issues in French society, the article introduces a number of concepts related to the definition of norm types in the French language, specifies nuances in the terminology adopted in the main grammars of the French language and in some new publications in the field of French phonetics, phonology and sociolinguistics. Two phonetic phenomena (liaison and French schwa) have been outlined as conflict zones between the written norm and oral speech in the phonetic implementation of the graphic elements of the spelling system. Due to the substantial divergence between oral and written code in these phenomena, as well as in relation to the multitude of factors that intervene in deciding on their (non)realization, they are at the root of serious difficulties in learning French pronunciation. The article offers some tips for emphasizing their teaching.

Development of Applied Linguistics

The aim of the article is to review the development of applied linguistics in Lithuania, analyse the general tendencies of the development of this science, and present the more prominent groups of researchers in applied linguistics, the schools that have been formed or are being formed, and the contribution of some researchers to the research of different branches of applied linguistics. The article focuses on the work started after the restoration of independence of the Republic of Lithuania in 1990, because only from that time onwards did the work of Lithuanian applied linguistics enter the international mainstream of this science. It discusses some of the research and practical work related to the research that helps or has helped in certain periods to solve problems related to language in life. First of all, the article introduces the works on teaching Lithuanian as a foreign language, which are connected with the beginning of applied linguistics in Lithuania, and which have laid the appropriate methodological foundations for the formation of communicative competence, for the development of a new type of textbooks, pedagogical grammars of the Lithuanian language, and for the creation of a system of assessment of competences. After discussing the origins of applied linguistics in Lithuania, the paper discusses the further development of this science. Research in the field of language acquisition, sociolinguistics, language attrition, cognitive linguistics, pragmatics, politeness and impoliteness, corpus and forensic linguistics, and other branches of applied linguistics is presented, and the real-life linguistic issues, analysed by Lithuanian researchers, are highlighted. The final section of the article describes the most important works of dissemination of applied linguistics and presents the research journal Taikomoji kalbotyra (“Applied Linguistics”), the international conferences on applied linguistics that have taken place in Lithuania, and the networks of researchers.

This integration of methodologies provides a comprehensive understanding of the concept configuration, emphasizing the need for a multidimensional approach in the study of language intricacies. In summary, this article highlights the importance of merging free associative experiments and sociolinguistic analysis to unravel the influence of social factors on concept associations. It contributes valuable insights into the dynamic nature of language, cognition, and society while emphasizing the relevance of age and gender variables in such investigations. This research lays a foundation for further exploration in the fields of sociolinguistics and psycholinguistics.

This paper entitled “Linguistic Impoliteness, and Reputation and Personality in Kurdish Language” mentions a negative aspect of using the Kurdish language through unethical language usage and linguistic impoliteness by the people who have reputations in Kurdish society and use language in a wrong way that cannot correlate with their personality and reputation. This study discusses those speeches and writings that embody impoliteness of language. Then, the methods and means of spreading this phenomenon and its reasons are discussed with the analysis of this phenomenon in the field of sociolinguistics. Later, this phenomenon is indicated in those who have reputations in Kurdish society mentioning its negative impact on the Kurdish official language and the people’s reputations. Eventually, recommendations and solutions for this phenomenon are presented. This study is related to the field of sociolinguistics which is related to applied linguistics, and it is conducted through the method of descriptive analysis.

A Little Caribbean in Madrid: analysis of the Dominican identity in the public space

According to the field of sociolinguistics of globalization, migrants resettle in new countries through deterritorialization and reterritorialization processes, which entail changes in the perception of the language and symbols of the homeland and those of the communities that migrants establish themselves in. Given that this contextual relation is expressed in the public space, the present study analyzes how Dominican resources are used in the linguistic and semiotic landscape of Tetuán, a well-known Dominican neighborhood of Madrid. Using both quantitative and qualitative methodologies, results show both the presence of the Dominican Spanish as well as Dominican symbols in the public space. Findings suggest that the Dominican community in Madrid has adapted their new place to make it more similar to their homeland, the Dominican Republic, reterritorializing the linguistic and semiotic landscape of Tetuán while building and shaping new identities. This study contributes to the body of research on linguistic landscape and linguistic attitudes in multilingual settings.

The investigation revolves around Anand's intellectual sphere, intricately woven with the threads of politics and social reform. Going beyond a superficial linguistic analysis, the study delves into the profound ways in which language serves as a potent instrument, enabling the expression, interrogation, and transformation of cultural narratives. The research methodology employs a qualitative exploration of linguistic elements in Anand's novels, with a keen emphasis on contextual significance. Drawing insights from the field of sociolinguistics, the analysis meticulously examines the nuanced linguistic choices employed by Anand, unravelling their pivotal role in conveying the subtleties of societal nuances. The chosen novels for scrutiny, notably "Untouchable" and "Coolie", emerge as focal points due to their explicit depiction of sociolinguistic intricacies, offering a fertile ground for investigating linguistic diversity, power dynamics, and cultural hybridity. This study seeks to deepen our comprehension of Mulk Raj Anand's literary legacy by illuminating the embedded sociolinguistic dimensions within his narratives. Through a holistic examination of linguistic choices, the research endeavours to underscore the enduring influence of words in shaping societal frameworks and cultural identities within the expansive canvas of Anand's novels.

English-language borrowings of the coronavirus era and their functioning in German online publications

In post-crisis conditions, it becomes possible to assess the impact that the coronavirus pandemic has had on the vocabulary of the German language. A large number of English-language borrowings have penetrated into the German language, arousing the interest of linguists in the question of the influence of a new layer of vocabulary on the recipient language and becoming the subject of study by Russian and foreign linguists. For example, on the basis of research on neologisms of the Covid era, dictionaries and reference books of the vocabulary of the coronavirus era are being produced in various languages, including German. The subject of this study is English-language borrowings dedicated to Covid-19 in modern German online media (magazines, newspapers), and the aim is to identify the impact of the pandemic on enriching the vocabulary of the German language with English-language borrowings. Actual works (not older than five years) of Russian and foreign scientists in the fields of lexicology, lexicography, onomastics, and sociolinguistics became the methodological basis of the study. The analysis of the impact of the coronavirus on the process of assimilation of English-language borrowings in German is carried out on the basis of online media texts for the period February 2020 – October 2021, which makes the study innovative and reflects the trends of modern linguistic science. As a result of the study, it was revealed that the coronavirus pandemic had an impact on the German language; in most cases, the recipient language began to actively combine English-language components of words with native German words, thereby forming new hybrid lexical formations. The further perspective of the research lies in the field of comparing the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the lexical composition of the German and Russian languages and determining the role of English-language borrowings in the vocabulary of both German and Russian languages.

Language Variation in Print Media: A Study of Code Switching Patterns in Pakistani Urdu ‘Express’ Newspaper Editorials

The current study explores the problematic background of language variation within the print media domain, specifically exploring code-switching patterns in the editorials of the Pakistani Urdu' Express' newspaper. Code-switching is a linguistic phenomenon involving alternation between two or more languages within a single discourse that reflects the dynamic interaction of cultural and communicative factors. The study put into practice a sociolinguistic lens to analyze the frequency, types, and functions of code-switching employed in the Urdu editorials of the 'Express' newspaper. The study applies a qualitative descriptive method; it produces descriptive data in the form of code-switched sentences from the editorial of Pakistani Urdu newspaper. 'Express' is selected for this purpose. One week of newspapers is collected for the current study from 1st October 2023 to 7th October 2023 to analyze code-switching in editorial sections. The analysis of data from the newspaper shows that the types of code-switching are intra-sentential, word code-switching, and total integrated Urdu. The most dominant type of code-switching observed is Intra-sentential (80%). The findings are expected to contribute to understanding how language is strategically employed in print media, shedding light on the role of code-switching as a tool for effective communication and cultural expression. This study holds significance in media discourse, as it exposes the linguistic choices made by writers and editors in the 'Express' newspaper, offering insights into the complex relationship between language, culture, and journalism. The results of this research are anticipated to inform future discussions on language dynamics within the Pakistani media landscape and contribute to the broader field of sociolinguistics.

Relationship Between Iranian Intermediate EFL Learners’ Interpersonal and Intrapersonal Intelligences and Their Speaking Skill

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between Iranian EFL learners’ interpersonal and intrapersonal intelligence and their speaking ability. To achieve this aim, 30 Iranian EFL learners whose level of proficiency was intermediate participated in this study. The participants’ general English knowledge was measured via Oxford Quick Placement Test (OQPT). The placement test revealed that all participants were intermediate learners and homogenous. The other instruments of the study were the Multiple Intelligences Inventory and the speaking test. After evaluating the participants’ general English knowledge, the speaking test was given to them. After collecting the speaking tests’ results, the questionnaire was distributed among the participants, and they were requested to answer all the items in it carefully and honestly. The Pearson correlation coefficient test was used to show the relationship between the participants’ interpersonal and intrapersonal intelligence and speaking skill. The findings revealed positive and significant relationships between the participants’ interpersonal and intrapersonal intelligence and their speaking. The findings of the study would be useful for teaching and learning speaking skill and researchers in the fields of TEFL and sociolinguistics.

This paper is set in the late Georgian period, when letter writing became a widespread social practice and letter-writing manuals established norms of propriety and elegance of style for addressing persons of all ranks. More specifically, it turns its attention to author-oriented address with a focus on the use of personal names in self-reference expressions, as these address the recipient of the letter at the same time as they describe the status of the writer. The aim is to explore their role as a means of socially-governed linguistic practice and as an index of politeness on the positive-negative continuum, as proposed for Early Modern English correspondence.
 The study is based on a set of private letters written by Mary Hamilton (1776–1814), a well-connected figure in royal, aristocratic and literary circles. The analysis traces intra-speaker variation in the use of self-reference in the main text and in the signature, and explores sociolinguistic factors (gender) as well as notions traditionally connected with pragmatic language use (distance, relative power). The research presented here will thus contribute to the growing body of literature that considers ego-documents as representations of the self, of particular interest in the fields of historical sociolinguistics and historical sociopragmatics.

Ethnic Rootedness and Social Affiliations at the Interface with Linguistic Performativity: Evidence from Americans of Southwest Asian or North African Descent

This study explores the relationship between linguistic behaviors of Americans of Southwest Asian or North African descent (SWANA Americans) and their ethnic rootedness, religion, and locality. SWANA Americans are an understudied community in the field of sociolinguistics but could be highly visible in society. SWANA Americans have historically and legally been classified as white in the US despite the social perception that they are not white. The linguistic analysis in the present paper will reflect the social discrepancies between the top-down perspective of assigning all SWANA Americans a statistical race category versus the bottom-up perspective of examining the social implications of this community’s nuanced internal composition differences. Labovian Sociolinguistic Interviews were conducted with 54 SWANA Americans in the Upper Midwest and Southern California, and an ethnic rootedness metric was designed to measure individual speakers’ ethnic rootedness. The results show that higher ethnic rootedness, being a Muslim (in the more careful speech style), and being from Dearborn, MI, are significant predictors of higher rates of “reracializing” indexically bleached ethnically affiliated lexicon (words such as Ali, Muslim, Iraq, Mohammad, etc.) in the speakers’ English speech.

In pursuit of epistemic authority in public intellectual engagement: the case of language and gender

Abstract Public intellectual life is an area of inquiry that has not received a great deal of attention within the field of sociolinguistics. This article investigates the performative dimension of public intellectual engagement in the area of language and gender and, more specifically, how epistemic authority about gender-neutral language is constructed in public intellectual contributions in Catalonia, Spain. Adopting Arendt’s notion of truth claim and the Foucauldian concepts of regimes of truth and epistemic sovereignty, we empirically examine the mechanisms of reception and validation of the public engagements of one highly visible linguistic scholar. Our study shows the ways in which this intellectual figure strives to be recognised as having exclusive scientific authority about language. We argue that pursuing the allegedly impartial standpoint of epistemic authority about gender and language inevitably advances the interests of specific political actors and large media corporations of a conservative strand that fervently oppose gender-neutral language.

Sociopragmatic Study of Javanese Oral Discourse in Big City Communities as an Effort to Maintain Indigenous Language

This research delves into the sociopragmatic intricacies of Javanese oral discourse within urban communities, focusing on the role of language in preserving the indigenous Javanese language amidst the pressures of urbanization and language shift. As urbanization accelerates, traditional languages like Javanese face the risk of diminishing usage and cultural significance. This study aims to elucidate how urban Javanese speakers employ their native language in various communicative contexts, examining the sociopragmatic factors that influence language choice and language use patterns. The findings of this research contribute to the fields of sociolinguistics, linguistic anthropology, and language preservation. By shedding light on the sociopragmatic dimensions of language use, the study provides a nuanced understanding of how urban Javanese speakers navigate linguistic diversity and negotiate their cultural identity. This research emphasizes recognizing and supporting indigenous languages within urban settings as communication vehicles and cultural heritage and identity repositories. Ultimately, the study's outcomes can inform language revitalization initiatives and policy-making efforts to foster the enduring presence of Javanese within the rapidly changing landscape of urban communities.
