Promoting climate action through youth empowerment and environmental education: Insights from Mohamed Bin Zayed University for Humanities

Climate change is a pressing global challenge that requires immediate action. To address this issue effectively, it is essential to engage and empower the younger generation who will shape the future. This abstract presents the experience of Mohamed Bin Zayed University for Humanities (MBZUH) in UAE in promoting climate action through youth empowerment and environmental education. MBZUH has recognized the significance of incorporating environmental education into its curriculum to foster a generation of environmentally conscious individuals. Through a multidimensional approach, the university has developed innovative strategies to empower students, enabling them to become active participants in addressing climate change. These strategies encompass both formal and informal education, leveraging various platforms and partnerships to create a comprehensive learning environment. This study delves into the initiatives undertaken by MBZUH to empower youth in climate action. It explores the incorporation of environmental education across disciplines, integrating sustainability principles into existing courses, and offering specialized programs focused on environmental science and climate studies. Additionally, it highlights the university’s efforts in promoting hands-on learning experiences, such as field trips, research projects, and community engagement, to deepen students’ understanding of climate issues and inspire practical action. Furthermore, the study examines the role of MBZUH’s collaboration with local and international organizations, governmental bodies, and the wider community in fostering youth empowerment and climate action. It showcases successful partnerships that have resulted in impactful initiatives, including awareness campaigns, capacity-building workshops, and youth-led environmental projects. By sharing the experience of MBZUH, this study aims to provide valuable insights and best practices for promoting climate action through youth empowerment and environmental education. It underscores the importance of empowering the next generation with the knowledge, skills, and motivation to become effective agents of change in addressing climate challenges.

Assessment of two recent hot dry rock thermal energy production projects

In this paper, we present analyses of laboratory and field data indicating that the current two-well, injection-production system, connected with multiple hydraulic fractures, is a very promising method for extracting heat from hot dry rock (HDR) systems to generate electricity. The current two-well system could be expanded to a three-well system consisting of one injection well and two symmetric producing wells connected via the central hydraulic fracture emanating from the injection well. To improve a uniform distribution of the injected fluid among all hydraulic fracture stages in the injection well, we advocate for field implementation of a newly designed well stimulation technique, the GeoThermOPTIMAL.We first present an analysis of the post-fracturing flow data obtained from an HDR geothermal injection well at the Utah FORGE Enhanced Geothermal System (EGS) research field site. The site is adjacent to the Roosevelt hydrothermal (HT) field. The objective of the study is to assess the effectiveness of well stimulation in extracting heat from the low-permeability, hot dry granitoid rock in the Utah FORGE research site. The study includes interpreting pressure falloff data obtained during the well stimulation process and employing laboratory-measured core data as a major input in the interpretation of the field falloff data. As a confirmation of the robustness of our analysis in Utah FORGE, we reviewed and analyzed the flow test results published for an injection-production doublet at the Blue Mountain EGS (Project Red) commercial site in Nevada. From the analyses of these two field tests, we have concluded that the interpretation and findings of the Blue Mountain EGS pilot test are consistent with the interpretation and findings from the Utah FORGE field research project test results.In summary, our engineering assessments began with laboratory experiments conducted on various core samples, including those from a granite outcrop and the Utah FORGE geothermal reservoir. These experiments aimed to measure key parameters such as matrix and fracture permeabilities, and porosities (km≈10−18m2, kf,eff≈10−15m2,ϕm≈10−1,andϕf≈10−4). These data served as guides and inputs for analytical and numerical solutions used to match the field pressure response of the geothermal wells. While we did not have core samples from the Blue Mountain EGS wells, we successfully applied the Utah FORGE analysis approach to the Blue Mountain site with cautious optimism.

The possible future of electric road systems in Europe—time to decide and act

Electrification of road transport is crucial to limit global warming. Battery electric vehicles with stationary charging infrastructure have received considerable attention in the scientific literature for both cars and trucks, while dynamic charging via electric road systems (ERS) has received much less attention and their future role in low-carbon road transport is uncertain. Here, we envision three potential scenarios for the future of ERS in European low-carbon transport. We sketch a potential European ERS network and discuss the political, technological, and market steps needed to realize these. We argue that existing field trials, tests, and research projects have collected sufficient evidence to make the next step: Decide and act. Decision-makers will never have perfect information about all aspects of ERS or competing technologies, but the urgency of the climate crisis requires a commitment one way or the other. A clear decision with respect to ERS would send a clear directive and would help focus time, effort, and money on the necessary infrastructure and policies to implement ambitious GHG abatement targets in road transport.

THE PARADOX OF ENVIRONMENTALISM: WHEN ENVIRONMENTALIST CONSUMPTION BECOMES A STATUS SYMBOL

The purpose of this review article is to provide a critical analysis of some of the environmentalist practices developed during the tackle ecological degradation, as well as to evaluate the petty-bourgeois character of these practices. Initially, the article explains that capitalist production-consumption relations are primarily responsible for the observed climate changes in our era. After that, the character of the petty bourgeois, the consumer individual of late capitalism, is discussed in the context of Bourdieusian theory. To empirically explore the social dimensions of petty bourgeois environmentalism, this paper analyzes data from a targeted field research project conducted with residents of two distinct socioeconomic categories within Ankara. The research data employed within the article constitutes a limited subset derived from the broader data repository established by Feyza Korkmaz Saglam during her field research in 2021 July, conducted as part of her doctoral study. The findings, acquired through the application of Bourdieu’s Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA) technique, reveal the utilization of environmentalist consumerism as a class differentiator, contributing to the perpetuation of capitalist production-consumption relations rather than challenging them.

Pengaruh Gaya Kepemimpinan terhadap Kinerja Karyawan di Kantor Pos Cabang Utama Kota Bandung

The main goal of the study is to look into and evaluate how leadership styles affect how well employees perform at the Bandung City Main Branch Post Office. This study uses a descriptive methodology and a quantitative approach. Field research projects, surveys, and in-depth literature reviews are all used to collect data. The SPSS (Statistical Product and Service Solutions) programme, version 29, is used to analyse the gathered data. Validity, reliability, normalcy, heteroskedasticity, linearity, simple linear regression, t-tests, and the coefficient of determination are all included in the completed assessments. This study also shows how aspects of leadership styles such as accountability, communication skills, and decision-making capacity have a big impact on worker performance. The results of the t-test, where the computed t-value exceeds the tabulated t-value, namely 6.027 > 2.048, support this conclusion. Therefore, it can be concluded that variable X does in fact have an impact on variable Y.

Drum dance accuracy detector: A CNN-based pose estimation framework for detecting inaccurate movements in Miao drum dance

As an intangible cultural heritage derived from the Miao culture, drum dance faces the crisis of losing its inheritance. The main cause behind the issue is the lack of teaching resources and distribution of the drum dance. This work is dedicated to resolving this issue with the usage of the recent advances in artificial intelligence. More specifically, the solution of Incorrect Movement Detection (IMD) is invented, where the core technique lies in the CNN-based pose estimation algorithm. IMD enables the real-time detection of the inaccurate dance movements, which realizes the possibility of self-learning of drum dance. The effectiveness of IMD is already validated by its application in a field research project at a Miao village in Xiangxi, Hunan, China. The proposed system may have a significant impact on the preservation and promotion of Miao culture.

Teaching the Chinese: A lived experience account of a multi-cultural voice studio

This study looks at multicultural education as a transformational pedagogical paradigm in the particular setting of teaching PhD students in music performance at the Philippine Women's University - School of Music. Using a multimodal approach, the study incorporates purposeful educational tactics based on psychological theories and metacognitive practices with a variety of musical traditions. With a variety of in-depth interviews and document analysis, this study sheds light on the complex effects of this kind of approach on students' creative and intellectual paths. The results illustrate the various facets of the educational revolution by connecting with a diverse range of experiences among the students who took part. The development of a strong sense of community, varied musical abilities, and enhanced cultural awareness are all major themes. Using Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs thoughtfully and incorporating metacognitive techniques is essential to creating a welcoming and encouraging learning environment. Apart from providing valuable perspectives on the direct effects on pupils, this study makes a significant contribution to the wider discussion on multicultural music education. The program's integration of many musical traditions broadens students' auditory horizons and acts as a microcosm for developing a global perspective, readying them for the ever-changing and interconnected world of the music industry. A transformative pedagogical technique that encourages a deeper knowledge of the cultural nuances buried in musical experiences and produces a conducive atmosphere for learning is the intentional use of psychological theories and metacognitive activities. Beyond the current teaching practices, this research has important implications for future curriculum creation, instructional tactics, and field research project. This study sets the stage for future conversations, interventions, and innovations in the field of music performance by emphasizing multicultural education as a vital component of holistic student development. This will help to move the sector in the direction of greater inclusivity and cultural enrichment.

Educational Benefits of Cu An Kiong Lasem Temple in Social Science Learning

Cu An Kiong Lasem Temple is one of the oldest temples in Lasem, located around the Babagan river. This sincerity has a continuous history of Chinese civilization which until now can still be found some ancient relics of former glory. This aim of article is to analyze the educational benefits of Cu An Kiong Temple in Lasem as an educational resource within the context of Social Studies at SMA N 1 Lasem. Cu An Kiong Temple is likely a significant historical and cultural site that plays a vital role in the study of this subject. This article will explore how Cu An Kiong Temple contributes to students' understanding of Chinese history, culture, and traditions, with a focus on the local context of Lasem. The article will also discuss approaches and teaching strategies that teachers can employ to integrate Cu An Kiong Temple into the Social Studies curriculum. This may involve field trips, research projects, or experiential learning methods to engage students and enhance their comprehension of the subject matter. Supported by research or case studies, this article will emphasize that Cu An Kiong Temple is not merely a tourist attraction or historical site but also an effective tool to enrich students' learning experiences in Social Studies and promote a better understanding of Chinese culture and history in the local environment.

Auto-biographies of Ukrainian war refugees. From forced migration to anchoring

This article aims to present the Ukrainian war refugees’ experience. Twenty-one interviews focused on autobiographical memoirs of Ukrainian war refugees were collected during the field research project in Poland and Germany in the summer and autumn of 2022. The text aimed to point out the peculiarities of Ukrainian refugeeism in the context of its specificity related to the evolution of the phenomenon of migration and forced migration over recent years in Central Europe. The content was analyzed for the fleeing and adaptive context of personal experience. It considers social ties, including family ties, which appeared in the interviewees’ statements. The studied material insights into the course of the war in Ukraine in 2022 from the perspective of civilians. It shows numerous and diverse examples of survival and adaptation activities under armed attacks, during the evacuation, border crossing, and anchoring in the places of their new residence. Due to the dominance of women in the sample, these examples can contribute to the analysis of the specificity of female migration, which differs from the previous profiles of economic migration in the region.

NEEDFINDING PRACTICE: ENHANCING STUDENTS' PROBLEM FRAMING SKILLS THROUGH ITERATIVE OBSERVATION FOR BUSINESS INNOVATION

AbstractThe ambidextrous balance of combining quantitative and qualitative approach is crucial to achieve business innovation in our ever-changing society. While exploring the early stages of a problem space, profound and iterative observations of human behaviors allow designers to discover unusual insights and users’ needs. In this regard, the purpose of this study is to introduce the Needfinding Practice course at KAIST and emphasize the importance of observational research to frame new business opportunities. Main learning goal of this course is to expand the problem finding phase for enhancing students’ creativity and divergent thinking abilities. In this study, we have conducted a literature review on needfinding through observation and how the early stage of design thinking process is related to understanding users deeply. By presenting students’ field research projects, we highlighted the process of identifying unexpected latent needs to gain qualitative data for future business implications.

Contemporary multimedia applications in the cultural communication discourse of the museum

AR/VR applications are gaining prominence in exhibition communication. In this field research project, we developed an assessment model to identify major AV/VR application types and their functions. We then used this model to describe 32 contemporary multimedia exhibition applications in 12 countries. During our visits to the exhibitions, we assumed the perspective of the non-specialist visitor to better identify communicative effects of AR/VR applications and compare them with traditional guides developed for similar exhibitions. Our results show that these innovative sources of information may significantly contribute to visitor enjoyment as well as knowledge gain and retention

One Hundred Years of Archaeological Work in Jordan

This article deals with major achievements in the field of archaeology and cultural heritage in Jordan since the 19th century, the time when many travelers explored Jordan and Palestine and paid attention to the richness of the Archaeological and historical sites. The Department of Antiquities was established in 1923 to manage the archaeological sites and excavations as well as restoration work in various sites of the country. As well as bylaws of antiquities ere issued in 1934. Since then extensive excavations and surveys took place by foreign expeditions, and later on with participation of local institutions. Archaeological and cultural resource management programs were established in a number of Jordanian universities for training local archaeologists to undertake field research projects in cooperation with international institutions. A national museum (Jordan Museum) as well as several local museums and university museums were established and made accessible for local communities. The Department of Antiquities developed a program entitled (MEGA-Jordan) to inventory and manage archaeology sites at a national level. International research centers were established in Jordan including the American, British, French, German and Spanish, to conduct archaeological work and to accommodate researchers from different parts of the world. Six Jordanian properties were inscribed in the World Heritage List: Petra, Quseir Amra, Um er-Rasas, Wadi Rum, Baptism Site and As-Salt.

Radio listening clubs in Malawi and Zambia

This paper, based upon a field research project commissioned by the Panos Institute SouthernAfrica, investigates the communicative efficacy of the radio listening clubs project implementedby the Institute in Malawi and Zambia. The investigation takes the form of a ‘second-orderinterpretation’ of the key findings of the field research. The findings are analysed in terms of theparticipatory communication model of development communication. The paper argues that theclubs live up to some of the ideal-typical attributes of participatory communication. This is evidentin the following areas: (i) a propensity for social mobilisation; (ii) acquisition of skills and knowledge;(iii) communally induced motivation to listen to the radio; (iv) the possibility of interpersonal influencewithin groups; (v) the benefit of being ‘organised’ structures; (vi) the ‘massive’ reach of the clubs;and (vii) the dialogic interchanges between the rural-based groups and the urban-based policymaking elites.

From the Centre/Periphery Dichotomy to Implicated Readers: Reading Tash Aw’s <i>We, The Survivors</i>


 
 
 In this article, I shall examine the problematic disposition of voice and agency as described in the London-based Malaysian author Tash Aw’s latest novel We, The Survivors (2019). The novel is constructed in the form of an oral testimony, narrated by the protagonist, an impoverished third-generation Chinese- Malaysian, Ah Hock, who is convicted for a culpable homicide of a migrant worker. It is framed by the non-intrusive presence of a Malaysian scholar, Su- Min, who interviews him as part of her field research project, and publishes his life-story in a book form. However, in the course of my discussion, I shall contend that Aw not only problematises the issue of voice appropriation in storytelling, but also questions the deeply residing chasms lying inherent in the existing societal structures. Drawing from Michael Rothberg’s proposition of the implicated subject and Hannah Arendt’s views on collective responsibility, I shall argue that Tash Aw’s “we” attempts to dismantle the stereotypical boundaries of centre and periphery. Through its specific focus on the predicament of the immigrants in Malaysia, the novel eventually strives to create a network of implicated subjects which includes not only the author and the readers, but also everyone else in society.
 
 

A study of the speech of bilingual children of Russian Germans living in Germany

The article presents the relevant issue of analysing the common features of the grammar of Russian as language inherited by the second or third generation of migrant children in Europe and in the world. The novelty of the study is in the fact that it compares the speech of children with different dominant languages and, in particular, studies the speech of a group of children from families of Russian Germans living in Germany under dual language inheritance. Their parents have a very rich migration history, as they are, in turn, also heritage speakers of German, the language, which they spoke in their family. In the present paper, the main task will be to identify the common features determined by the contact between Russian as a heritage language and other languages, especially at morphological and lexical levels. For this purpose, a field research project was conducted at the Learning and Integration Centre Dialog e. V. in Reutlingen. The analysis of oral and written works of bilingual children of the last generation of Russian Germans showed not only the common elements of erosion identified in the heritage grammar, but also the special linguistic features caused by the transition from German-Russian to Russian-German inheritance. The influence of their parents language distinguishes them from other groups of Russian students, emphasizes the importance of studying not only childrens, but also their parents speech, as well as teaching standard Russian in the framework of non-formal education.

A Method for Conducting Preliminary Analysis of the Nature and Context of Sport for Development and Peace Projects in Fieldwork Research: An Illustration With a Malagasy Non-Governmental Organization.

More research on sport for development and peace (SDP) organizations is needed to better understand their actual contributions to the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Yet, the unstable, restricted, or even risky contexts in which many non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and SDP agencies sometimes operate often leave researchers to face important challenges to develop effective or feasible methods to work with such organizations. This study aimed to address the ontological and epistemological questions about what should be known about a given context in an organization before setting off on fieldwork. We propose a methodology, based on an actantial model (AM), as a method to analyze the nature and context of a project, to assess the actors involved in the project, and to establish if the global cost (i.e., material, temporal, financial, and physical) for conducting fieldwork is realistic and feasible of all the parties involved in the potential project. To illustrate this process, we analyzed the nature and context of an SDP project in Madagascar as the first step for potential collaborative research. As researchers, we do not want to invest time and energy to build up a fully developed field research project with an NGO in a context where it would not be realistic or feasible to conduct such research. Actually in this context, developing a research protocol without an implementation strategy might not only be detrimental to the researchers, but also to the NGO itself, where resources are often limited. Accordingly, the results from this preliminary field research demonstrate that an AM is a relevant analytical tool for obtaining insights about the context, the actors, and their relationships within an NGO. In conclusion, this model might be a useful instrument for conducting an initial analysis for the preliminary identification of the necessary conditions for the construction of a sustainable empirical research partnership with a given SDP project.

ИЗУЧЕНИЕ РУССКОГО НАСЕЛЕНИЯ АЛТАЙСКОГО КРАЯ МОСКОВСКИМИ ЭТНОЛОГАМИ

The article presents the consideration of the expedition research projects of the Institute of Ethnography of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in Altai Krai, carried out in the 1960s-1990s. The research is structured by the characteristics of the research projects considering cultures of various local, social and religious groups of the Russian population. The author pays special attention to the analysis of the peculiarities of the settlements, households, clothing, footwear, and nutrition of each of these groups. In conclusion the author summarizes the results of the research work of Moscow ethnologists’ expeditions and provides the most important findings they made during the field research projects.

Providing interactive and field laboratories while teaching university marine biology classes in an era of COVID-19.

An entirely online upper‐division university marine invertebrates course modeled after a field experience‐intensive course that also provided interaction with live animals and research experience was offered at Rosario Beach Marine Laboratory in the summer of 2020. We describe online methods we used for providing field experiences to students participating online, as well as a workstation and interactive method for identification and detailed anatomical examination of live macroinvertebrates with students. Students were also involved as active participants in a field research project. Nearly all of the equipment involved is inexpensive or readily available in most university biology laboratories or classrooms.

Uniqueness and Generalization in Organizational Psychology: Research as a Relational Practice.

The paper addresses the epistemological and theoretical assumptions that underpin the concept of Work and Organizational Psychology as idiographic, situated, and transformative social science. Positioning the connection between uniqueness and generalization inside the debate around organization studies as applied approaches, the contribution highlights the ontological, gnoseological, and methodological implications at stake. The use of practical instead of scientific rationality is explored, through the perspective of a hermeneutic lens, underlining the main features connected to the adoption of an epistemology of practice. Specifically, the contribution depicts the configuration of the applied research as a relational practice, embedded in the unfolding process of generating knowledge dealing with concrete social contexts and particular social objects. The discussion of a case study regarding a field research project allows one to point out challenges and constraints connected to the enactment of the research process as a social accomplishment.

Виктория Анатольевна Липинская и Алтай: особенности полевой работы московских этнографов в Сибири в 1960–1990-е годы

The article considers field research of Russian population of Altai Krai (region), carried out in 1960–1991 by the Viktoriya Lipinskaya, in the context of history of expedition activity of Institute of Ethnography of Academy of Sciences of the USSR in Siberia. The research topicality is determined by the fragmentary study of Siberian academic expeditions, problems of formation of ethnographic personnel during the Soviet period, and methods and techniques of ethnographers' field work. The sources of this research are the scientific works by Viktoriya Lipinskaya, based on expeditions materials, as well as materials from the author's own personal archive. Among them there are epistolary sources, interview materials, and memoirs of Viktoriya Lipinskaya. The predominance of documents of personal origin determined the accentuation on under-investigated issues of anthropology of scientific life: the paths of research into ethnographic science, the influence of objective and subjective factors on scientific choice, the ratio of theory and practice in the formation of research competences of young ethnographers. The issues of the organization of expeditions, material and technical support, human and methodological resourcing of field research projects were also considered. The principles of choosing of the research areas and selecting respondents were analyzed, the expedition routing was reconstructed. As a result of the analysis of Viktoriya Lipinskaya biography, closely associated with the scientific life of the 1950–1980s, the contribution of the academic institute to the ethnographic study of the Altai population is assessed, and the influence of subjective and objective factors on the results of academic research is revealed. At the turn of the 1950s and 1960s the formation of research programs was determined by the change of research priorities from the study of “traditionalism” to “innovativeness”, interpreted as the influence of socialist modernization on mentality and utility culture of ethnic and social groups in Soviet society. In this context are considered the activities of the director of Institute of Ethnography AS USSR Sergei Tolstov and his deputy Ludmila Terentieva. At the end, conclusions are drawn about the contribution of Viktoriya Lipinskaya to the ethnographic study of the Russians in Siberia.
