Fake News Detection Revisited: An Extensive Review of Theoretical Frameworks, Dataset Assessments, Model Constraints, and Forward-Looking Research Agendas

The emergence and acceptance of digital technology have caused information pollution and an infodemic on Online Social Networks (OSNs), blogs, and online websites. The malicious broadcast of illegal, objectionable and misleading content causes behavioural changes and social unrest, impacts economic growth and national security, and threatens users’ safety. The proliferation of AI-generated misleading content has further intensified the current situation. In the previous literature, state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods have been implemented for Fake News Detection (FND). However, the existing research lacks multidisciplinary considerations for FND based on theories on FN and OSN users. Theories’ analysis provides insights into effective and automated detection mechanisms for FN, and the intentions and causes behind wide-scale FN propagation. This review evaluates the available datasets, FND techniques, and approaches and their limitations. The novel contribution of this review is the analysis of the FND in linguistics, healthcare, communication, and other related fields. It also summarises the explicable methods for FN dissemination, identification and mitigation. The research identifies that the prediction performance of pre-trained transformer models provides fresh impetus for multilingual (even for resource-constrained languages), multidomain, and multimodal FND. Their limits and prediction capabilities must be harnessed further to combat FN. It is possible by large-sized, multidomain, multimodal, cross-lingual, multilingual, labelled and unlabelled dataset curation and implementation. SOTA Large Language Models (LLMs) are the innovation, and their strengths should be focused on and researched to combat FN, deepfakes, and AI-generated content on OSNs and online sources. The study highlights the significance of human cognitive abilities and the potential of AI in the domain of FND. Finally, we suggest promising future research directions for FND and mitigation.

Flexible switchable mid-infrared metalens optical tweezer based on VO2

Metasurface has developed rapidly since its advent because of its powerful control over electromagnetic waves, but most traditional metasurface can only passively realize a single fixed function, which limits its application and development in integrated systems. To modulate electromagnetic waves more flexibly and efficiently, here, we first propose what we believe to be a novel scheme to design a switchable metalens by utilizing the phase change materials VO2 and double-layer metasurface modulation. The metalens designed by the proposed scheme can achieve flexible conversion between the transmitted focusing and reflected focusing through changing the phase state of VO2. Then, we investigate the optical force phenomenon of these metalenses, the simulation results indicating that the proposed switchable metalens can achieve stable particle manipulation under both the transmission and reflection modes. This makes it a promising device in flexible optical manipulation, and this reversible tuning will also show significant application potentials in biology, medicine, optical communication and other fields.

Miniaturized broadband high out-of-band rejection bandpass filter based on spoof surface plasmon polaritons with defected ground structure

In this paper, a novel compact bandpass filter (BPF) with a wide out-of-band rejection is proposed. It can achieve broadband characteristics by combining hollow bowtie-type spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPPs) with complementary H-type defected grounded structures (DGSs) through aperture coupling. Compared with the conventional SSPP unit cells, the hollow bowtie-type structure exhibits much better slow-wave characteristics. The introduced slant antenna type port-coupling can produce a very strong high-performance rejection outside the high frequency stopband. Simulation results show that the SSPPs-DGS-based BPF has an excellent band pass characteristics in a broadband range with − 3dB fractional bandwidth of 43.5% at center frequency f0 of 2.04 GHz. The return loss in the passband is better than − 12 dB. Furthermore, because of the multiple transmission zeros generated in upper-stop-band, the designed BPF has an extremely strong out-of-band rejection of -40dB from 1.5 f0 to 4 f0 (f0 is the center frequency). The designed SSPPs-DGS-based BPF is fabricated by conventional printed circuit board (PCB) technology with a compact size of only 0.68λg*0.34λg (λg is the wavelength at the center frequency). The measured results have a good agreement with the simulation ones, which verifies the rationality and feasibility of the design. The miniaturized wideband BPF with broad out-of-band rejection may make it has good application prospect in the new generation microwave communication field.

Permutation Entropy for Signal Analysis

Shannon Entropy is the preeminent tool for measuring the level of uncertainty (and conversely, information content) in a random variable. In the field of communications, entropy can be used to express the information content of given signals (represented as time series) by considering random variables which sample from specified subsequences. In this paper, we will discuss how an entropy variant, the \textit{permutation entropy} can be used to study and classify radio frequency signals in a noisy environment. The permutation entropy is the entropy of the random variable which samples occurrences of permutation patterns from time series given a fixed window length, making it a function of the distribution of permutation patterns. Since the permutation entropy is a function of the relative order of data, it is (global) amplitude agnostic and thus allows for comparison between signals at different scales. This article is intended to describe a permutation patterns approach to a data driven problem in radio frequency communications research, and includes a primer on all non-permutation pattern specific background. An empirical analysis of the methods herein on radio frequency data is included. No prior knowledge of signals analysis is assumed, and permutation pattern specific notation will be included. This article serves as a self-contained introduction to the relationship between permutation patterns, entropy, and signals analysis for studying radio frequency signals and includes results on a classification task.

Ultra-Low Threshold Resonance Switching by Terahertz Field Enhancement-Induced Nanobridge.

Ongoing efforts spanning decades aim to enhance the efficiency of optical devices, highlighting the need for a pioneering approach in the development of next-generation components over a broad range of electromagnetic wave spectra. The nonlinear transport of photoexcited carriers in semiconductors at low photon energies is crucial to advancements in semiconductor technology, communication, sensing, and various other fields. In this study, ultra-low threshold resonance mode switching by strong nonlinear carrier transport beyond the semi-classical Boltzmann transport regime using terahertz (THz) electromagnetic waves are demonstrated, whose energy is thousands of times smaller than the bandgap. This is achieved by employing elaborately fabricated 3D tip structures at the nanoscale, and nonlinear effects are directly observed with the THz resonance mode switching. The nanotip structure intensively localizes the THz field and amplifies it by more than ten thousand times, leading to the first observation of carrier multiplication phenomena in these low-intensity THz fields. This experimental findings, confirmed by concrete calculations, shed light on the newly discovered nonlinear behavior of THz fields and their strong interactions with nanoscale structures, with potential implications and insights for advanced THz technologies beyond the quantum regime.

Experimental prototype of mesh antenna based on digital twin technology

The ring mesh antenna plays an important role in the field of aerospace communication owing to its excellent performance characteristics, but faces the challenge of decreasing profile accuracy due to environmental and structural failures during in-orbit operation. Digital twin, a promising technology, can effectively monitor and adjust the antenna surface accuracy. In other words, by creating a digital model of the physical entity, real-time monitoring and adjustment can be made to maintain the electrical performance of the antenna. In this paper, a digital twin system for an experimental prototype of a ring mesh antenna is proposed. Firstly, we introduce the preliminaries of digital twin technology. Secondly, we propose a system framework based on a five-dimensional digital twin model. Then, a digitization software and a visualization interface are developed. Finally, according to efficiency analysis and simulation results, the feasibility of the system was verified. We demonstrate its effectiveness in terms of real-time monitoring and automatic mesh adjustment functions, and significantly improve the efficiency of the adjustment process. It provides a reference with significant value for the application of digital twin technology in the field of aerospace communication, which significantly advances the development of this field.

Electric and magnetic resonances inducing triple-stopband terahertz metamaterial filter

A polarization insensitive triple-stopband terahertz metamaterial filter is proposed. This filter consists of a flexible polyimide substrate and periodically arranged copper structures on its top. The shape of the metal unit is a “田” inside a square ring. The simulation results show that the resonant frequencies of the filter are 0.107, 0.23, and 0.271 THz; the stopband depths are −35.56 dB, −42.7 dB, and −37.485 dB; the 3 dB bandwidths are 34, 53, and 32 GHz; and the relative bandwidths are 31.78%, 23%, and 11.8%, respectively. Effective parameter analysis demonstrates that the first resonance originates from the negative effective permittivity and positive effective permeability, but the reason for the latter two resonances is opposite to the first. The surface current distributions indicate that the first resonance is electric type, while the latter two resonances are the lower and higher orders magnetic resonances, respectively. Then, we verify the triple-stopband characteristic of the filter based on the equivalent circuit. Finally, the analysis reveals that the performance of the filter is independent of the incident polarization angle. This filter has the characteristics of multi-frequency, broadband, deep stopband, polarization insensitivity, and simple structure, which can be used in terahertz communication, detection, and other fields.

Integrating Artificial Intelligence and Big Data in Spanish Journalism Education: A Curricular Analysis

Artificial intelligence (AI) and big data have impacted different professional sectors in our society. Communication and journalism are clearly among them. From the automatic generation of content to the identification of topics of interest or monitoring of users’ usage habits, AI introduces important training challenges for professionals in the field of communication. Meanwhile, big data analytics enables data journalists to handle large amounts of information in an automated manner, allowing them to perform in-depth analysis of disorganized data. This study analyzes the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and big data in the curricula of journalism degrees offered by Spanish universities. The research employs quantitative and qualitative methods to examine the typology, syllabus, and distribution of subjects directly or indirectly addressing AI and big data topics, based on indicators such as structure, credit system, objectives, competencies, and professional profiles. The results reveal a scarce integration of AI and Big Data subjects in journalism curricula in Spain. Among the analyzed courses, only seven addressed data journalism as a complete course, while 19 introduced AI and Big Data as part of more general content. The study highlights the need for journalism education to adapt to the disruptive impact of AI and big data on the profession. It discusses the debate between focusing on teaching technological skills versus providing critical and ethical values. The research aims to contribute to the discussion on the readiness of journalism curricula to cope with technological advancements by analyzing the Spanish case.

Employing a thematic analysis approach, the study examines the use of immersive technologies as the medium for conveying environmental messages, including narrative techniques, visual elements, interactive features, and user engagement strategies. The study also highlights the importance of user experiences when creating impactful environmental narratives in virtual environments. The implications of this research extend to environmental experts, communication practitioners, and technology developers who are seeking to leverage immersive technologies for environmental advocacy and education. By understanding the strengths and limitations of immersive technologies as an environmental communication medium, practitioners can use these insights to create more compelling immersive experiences that inspire management and promote sustainability in an increasingly digital world.

It is fair to say that educating the human being of the future is a highly complex and multifaceted issue, which needs to take into account the ever more rapid changes in society, technology, the economy and so on. It is important that children have the abilities and skills to adapt to a world in which many familiar norms, rules, professions and so on may change or simply disappear. Of course, there are different educational systems, forms, models, etc. But the fundamental questions remain the same: how to understand? How to combine? How to predict? What is even more obvious is that we are at a crossroads. On the one hand, education using the model of the past (which has already happened) is known, understood and quite effective. It is quite another thing when it comes to education for the future (which is likely to happen). There are many unknowns here. But the mission of educators remains the same - to broaden the way we see and understand the world. To survive in a polarised, ever-changing world. It is also clear that the informatisation of society (the information boom) is not only bringing about fundamental changes in the field of communication, but is also leading to profound changes in culture - the balance of cultures is being upset. The "lower" (mass) culture is beginning to dominate over the "upper" (elite) culture. This is undoubtedly manifested in education. A legitimate question is whether the concepts of deconstructivism and postmodernism will really determine the future of education. There is an apparent paradox. The abundance of different technologies (including educational technologies) provides virtually unlimited opportunities for education/learning, but at the same time creates a disconnect from the desire for knowledge, curiosity, exploration. Because, after all, there is the almighty internet and the AI. While the AI liberates people from routine and/or routine operations, how to make meaningful and effective use of this opportunity to develop creative and critical thinking is crucial. In a context of information overload, the ability to distinguish truth from falsehood, to evaluate and analyse data is essential and indispensable. Thus, the person of the future must strive to understand the causes and consequences of what is happening. And here, it seems, we are not inventing something new. The human being of the future needs what the human being of today needs, namely the ability to think logically and systemically, to question and to analyse critically any information that is presented to him or her or that he or she finds. The current education/schooling system does not always respond to the most pressing needs and changes. In fact, it remains too standardised and does not allow for deviation from established norms, which is a definite hindrance to the development of creativity and criticality. So the fundamental issues remain the same for the future. What is the role of education in the development of the individual, society and civilisation? Why is the ability to acquire and transmit knowledge/information essential for human progress? Why is it important to continuously reflect on one's learning and to implement it fully? One thing is clear: the person of the future is an adaptable, globally minded and conscious and purposeful individual. The mission of education is to ensure that the person of the future is able to adapt and live in an ever-changing world full of uncertainties. It is of fundamental importance to educate the individual in various aspects, to provide not only knowledge but also a solid foundation of values. It is not the economy and technology that determine our present, let alone our future, but education/schooling. And it is not just a matter of preparing for a place in society, it is not just a matter of integrating into existing and established systems of activity, and it is not just a matter of educating the pragmatic consumer. Education is first and foremost the formation of the human being in and for humanity, it is self-development (self-education) and participation in the creation of a better and more perfect world. NFC Tag Awareness and Its Visual Implementation on Food Packaging: Case Study in Slovenia

Many companies are using smart packaging to provide consumers with more information about their products. The goal of our case study is to access the Near Field Communication (NFC) tag knowledge, as well as getting insights into tag positioning in food package design for better visibility in order to develop some guidelines for future tag implementations. A preliminary survey of professionals provided an overview of NFC tag usage, followed by an online survey that assessed knowledge and visibility of tag placements. These findings were further discussed in focus groups and measured using eye-tracking technology. For placement visibility assessments, well-known and fictitious packaging designs of milk were used. The results show that, due to the NFC tag’s low market penetration, consumer recognition is low, with only generations Y and Z being familiar with the NFC tag. Knowledge of the NFC tag does not significantly vary based on education level. When considering the use of NFC tags, it is crucial to define and understand the target market. If the target is younger generations, the potential to increase engagement with the product can be achieved. Additionally, to boost consumer interaction, NFC tags or other smart elements should include an activation prompt, positioned on the central right section of the packaging and distinguished by a distinct color. The influence of the design on tag visibility is essential to ensure its effectiveness.

Encryption Techniques in Near Field Communication (NFC): Challenges, Applications, and Future Directions

With the growth of the need of information transmission and communication, Near Field Communication(NFC) technique is widely used in different areas for its convenience and simplicity,especially those areas that require both high efficiency and low cost of information transmission. However, the security of NFC itself is not ensured due to the risk of information leakage caused by technical features of short distance information transmission. Information encryption techniques are able to help NFC to be more reliable and safer from the danger of data leakage. There are several kinds of encryption techniques for NFC encryption.Due to the impact of multiple different techniques on the universality of NFC, placing different encryption techniques under the same standard can be an effective research method to improve collaboration efficiency of different encryption techniques. This paper mainly introduces common encryption techniques for NFC,including their features and applicable scenarios, and attempt to conduct technical analysis on existing encryption technologies for finding possible improving directions.

The Application of Near Field Communication (NFC) in Public Transportation: Current Practices, Challenges, and Future Prospects

In the field of public transportation, the introduction of NFC technology can realize contactless payment and automatic ticket checking functions, significantly improving system efficiency and passenger experience. The article first reviews the development history of the public transportation system and the basic principles of NFC technology, and then analyzes the technical architecture and working principle of the NFC payment system. Through the cases of public transportation systems in many cities around the world, the practical application and effect of NFC technology are demonstrated. This article also verifies the transaction speed, stability and user satisfaction of NFC technology in the public transportation system through a series of experimental evaluations. The results show that NFC technology has excellent performance in terms of processing speed, system stability and user satisfaction, especially during peak hours, its advantages are more obvious. At the same time, the research also pointed out the limitations of current NFC technology applications and the challenges faced in practical applications. In the future, NFC technology will become more complete and is expected to provide passengers with a more personalized and intelligent service experience.

The Role of Sentiment Analysis in Machine Translation- A Review on the Example of ChatGPT

In today’s globalization, machine translation technology has become an indispensable bridge for cross-lingual communication. The integration of sentiment analysis makes machine translation not only able to convey information, but also able to accurately express and understand the emotional color of the original text, which is of great significance in the fields of cross-cultural communication, customer service, and social media interaction. This study overviews the development of machine translation technology, from early rule-based models to modern statistical models to Transformer-based neural network models, with a special focus on the integrated application of ChatGPT in sentiment analysis and machine translation. First, this study introduces the background and research significance of machine translation, and discusses the role of sentiment analysis in improving translation quality and user satisfaction. Subsequently, the historical development of machine translation technology is reviewed in detail, and the basic concepts and methodologies of sentiment analysis and its applications in different fields are elaborated. On this basis, this study analyzes in depth the technical architecture, language model and interaction capability of ChatGPT, as well as its specific application and performance in sentiment analysis. Further, this study explores the importance of sentiment analysis in machine translation, including sentiment recognition, translation strategies for sentiment expression, and the impact of sentiment analysis on improving translation quality and cultural adaptability. Meanwhile, the advantages and limitations of ChatGPT in sentiment analysis are assessed, and future research directions are proposed, including technology convergence, construction of datasets and evaluation criteria, and ethical and bias issues. Finally, this study summarizes the practical application value of sentiment analysis in machine translation and looks forward to the potential areas of future research, aiming to provide reference and inspiration for the further development of machine translation and sentiment analysis.

Romance and Worries: AI Partners and Young Adults’ Emotional Relationships

With the rapid development of science and technology, AI artificial intelligence has been comprehensively developed and penetrated into every corner of life. With the emergence of updated human-computer interaction products, AI partners gradually enter people’s daily lives and becoming more and more popular among the younger demographics. Aiming to clarify the emotional relationship between young adults and their AI partners, this study takes adolescents as research subjects and uses online observation and literature research methods. Research has found that young adults’ emotional interactions with AI partners can have a dual impact. Using an AI partner wisely, they can gain positive psychological comfort, get rid of emotional loneliness, and improve social skills. Yet, over-indulgence in the world of AI partners can also negatively affect young adults’ growth, leading to disappointment in the real world and disclosure of their personal privacy. In order to maximize the positive effects of AI and prevent over dependence, this study suggests promoting the technological upgrading of the AI industry, emphasizing the guidance of family education, and strengthening legal regulation, so as to promote the scientific use of AI partners and social harmonious development together. Moreover, this research can make people further understand the field of AI emotional communication, let people have more tolerance for users, and make this way of communication further into people’s lives.

Enhanced Optical Bistability of a Metasurface Based on Asymmetrically Optimized Mirror-Induced Magnetic Anapole States

In the field of modern optical computing and communication, optical bistability plays a crucial role. With a weak third-order nonlinear coefficient, low switch thresholds of optical bistability from Si-based nanophotonic structures remain a challenge. In this work, a metasurface consisting of silicon nanostrip arrays placed on the optically thick silver film is proposed. The light–matter interaction is enhanced by mirror-inducing the magnetic anapole states (MASs) and asymmetrically optimizing its silicon nanostrip. Numerical results show that the average enhancement factor (EF) of an electric field can be greatly enhanced to be 1524.8. Moreover, the optical bistability of the proposed metasurface achieves the thresholds of ION-OFF and IOFF-ON of 8.5 MW/cm2 and 7.1 MW/cm2, respectively, which is the lowest threshold when compared to the previous works based on silicon nanostructures. The angular dependance of the bistability performance is also investigated. This work facilitates the proposed hybrid metasurface in the fields of miniaturized all-optical switches and modulators, which are key components in optical computing and communication.

Research on the Progress of Modulation Technology and Data Transmission Technology in Underwater Wireless Optical Communication

Recently, as an efficient data transmission method, underwater wireless optical communication has become one of the key research topics in the fields of military communication and underwater surveillance. Modulation technology and technology in the transmission process play a key role in the UWOC system, which directly affects the performance, accuracy and safety of the system. The advanced modulation techniques from Intensity Modulation (IM), Pulse Modulation, Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM), and Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (QPSK) to the combination of multiple modulation techniques, as well as the development process of modulation technology in optical encryption, are summarized in this paper. In terms of data transmission technology, the technological progress process from simplex to full-duplex communication is summarized. Finally, a reference solution is proposed to solve the challenges in realizing the underwater communication goals of long-distance, high-speed, low-bit error rate, and large-capacity underwater communication at the same time, and future development is prospected.
