Femtosecond Extreme Ultraviolet Spectroscopy of an Iridium Photocatalyst Reveals Oxidation State and Ligand Field Specific Dynamics

Femtosecond X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Ir O3-edge and N6,7-edges is performed on the photocatalyst iridium(III) tris(2-phenylpyridine), Ir(III)(ppy)3 using a tabletop high-harmonic source. Extreme ultraviolet (XUV) absorption between 44 and 76 eV measures transitions from the Ir 5p3/2 and 4f5/2,7/2 core to 5d valence orbitals, and the position of these spectral features is shown to be sensitive to the oxidation state and ligand field of the metal center. Upon excitation of the singlet metal-to-ligand charge transfer (1MLCT) band at 400 nm, a shift in the spectra due to the formation of the Ir(IV) center is observed, as is the creation of a new spectral feature corresponding to transitions into the t2g hole. Vibrational cooling of the MLCT state on the 3 and 16 ps time scales is measured as changes in the intensity of the transient features. This work establishes XUV spectroscopy as a useful tool for measuring the electronic structure of third row transition metal photosensitizers and catalysts at ultrafast time scales.

Ultrafast charge-transfer dynamics in a visible-light-excited iridium(III) terpyridine 2-phenylpyridine complex studied by femtosecond X-ray absorption spectroscopy

Femtosecond time-resolved X-ray absorption near-edge structure (TR-XANES) spectroscopy was used to elucidate the visible-light excitation process in mononuclear iridium (III) terpyridine (tpy) 2-phenylpridine (ppy) ([Ir(tpy)(ppy)Cl]+), which is a known CO2-reduction photocatalyst. Ultrafast intersystem crossing (ISC) was detected by TR-XANES spectroscopy with a time resolution of 90 fs, and the lifetime of the excited singlet state of the metal-to-ligand-charge-transfer state (1MLCT) was found to be 114 fs. Theoretical calculations reproduced the changes in the XANES spectra corresponding to those in the molecular structure. The TR-XANES directly detected a fast structural change around the Ir atom associated with the ISC to the hot triplet state. By contrast, the subsequent relaxation process to the lowest triplet state by internal conversion was not detected, suggesting that the internal conversion mainly occurs not around the Ir atom but at the ligands such as the tpy.

Ultrafast X-ray Spectroscopy of Haem Proteins

In this article we revisit our recent picosecond and femtosecond X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) experiments, probing the ultrafast electronic and geometric evolution of photoexcited haem proteins, namely ferrous Nitrosyl Myoglobin (MbNO) and ferric Cytochrome c (Cyt c). We show through these two examples, combined with results from ultrafast optical spectroscopy, the universal behavior of the excited state dynamics of ferric and ferrous complexes. Regardless of the type of ligand, its dissociation or lack thereof, or the metal oxidation state, the photoexcited system relaxes through a cascade of excited spin states leading to formation of a high spin state, which in the case of the haem is a domed porphyrin.

Direct and real-time observation of hole transport dynamics in anatase TiO2 using X-ray free-electron laser

Carrier dynamics affects photocatalytic systems, but direct and real-time observations in an element-specific and energy-level-specific manner are challenging. In this study, we demonstrate that the dynamics of photo-generated holes in metal oxides can be directly probed by using femtosecond X-ray absorption spectroscopy at an X-ray free-electron laser. We identify the energy level and life time of holes with a long life time (230 pico-seconds) in nano-crystal materials. We also observe that trapped holes show an energy distribution in the bandgap region with a formation time of 0.3 pico-seconds and a decay time of 8.0 pico-seconds at room temperature. We corroborate the dynamics of the electrons by using X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the metal L-edges in a consistent explanation with that of the holes.

Femtosecond x-ray absorption spectroscopy of pyrazine at the nitrogen K-edge: on the validity of the Lorentzian limit

We calculate the femtosecond x-ray absorption spectrum of pyrazine at the nitrogen K-edge including the wavepacket dynamics in both the valence and core-excited state manifolds. We do not invoke the widely used short-time (or Lorentzian) approximation which neglects the nuclear dynamics after the x-ray probe excitation. Instead, we calculate the x-ray-induced polarization in the time-domain where the optical pump as well as x-ray probe pulses are explicitly described. While the non-adiabatic population transfer following the optical excitation is well reproduced in the Lorentzian limit the transient x-ray absorption spectra obtained under this approximation lack some vibronic features, even when considering the short core-hole lifetime of nitrogen. We further demonstrate the effect of an increasingly longer pulse on the observed photo-triggered wavepacket dynamics which are blurred to the point that the x-ray probe response becomes effectively time-independent.

Ligand-Field Effects in a Ruthenium(II) Polypyridyl Complex Probed by Femtosecond X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy.

We employ femtosecond X-ray absorption spectroscopy of [Ru(m-bpy)3]2+ (m-bpy = 6-methyl-2,2'-bipyridine) to elucidate the time evolution of the spin and charge density upon metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) excitation. The core-level transitions at the Ru L3-edge reveal a very short MLCT lifetime of 0.9 ps and relaxation to the lowest triplet metal-centered state (3MC) which exhibits a lifetime of about 300 ps. Time-dependent density functional theory relates ligand methylation to a lower ligand field strength that stabilizes the 3MC state. A quarter of the 3MLCT population appears to be trapped which may be attributed to intramolecular vibrational relaxation or further electron transfer to the solvent. Our results demonstrate that small changes in the ligand field allow control of the photophysical properties. Moreover, this study underscores the high information content of femtosecond L-edge spectroscopy as a probe of valence charge density and spin-state in 4d transition metals.

Investigation of Nonequilibrium Electronic Dynamics of Warm Dense Copper with Femtosecond X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy.

Ultrafast optical excitation of matter leads to highly excited states that are far from equilibrium. In this study, femtosecond x-ray absorption spectroscopy was used to visualize the ultrafast dynamics in photoexcited warm dense Cu. The rich dynamical features related to d vacancies are observed on femtosecond timescales. Despite the success in explaining x-ray absorption data in the picosecond regime, the new femtosecond data are poorly understood through the traditional two-temperature model based on the fast thermalization concept and the static electronic structure for high-temperature metals. An improved understanding can be achieved by including the recombination dynamics of nonthermal electrons and changes in the screening of the excited d block. The population balance between the 4sp and 3d bands is mainly determined by the recombination rate of nonthermal electrons, and the underpopulated 3d block is initially strongly downshifted and recovered in several hundreds of femtoseconds.

Femtosecond Soft-X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy of Liquids with a Water-Window High-Harmonic Source.

Femtosecond X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is a powerful method to investigate the dynamical behavior of a system after photoabsorption in real time. So far, the application of this technique has remained limited to large-scale facilities, such as femtosliced synchrotrons and free-electron lasers (FEL). In this work, we demonstrate femtosecond time-resolved soft-X-ray absorption spectroscopy of liquid samples by combining a sub-micrometer-thin flat liquid jet with a high-harmonic tabletop source covering the entire water-window range (284–538 eV). Our work represents the first extension of tabletop XAS to the oxygen edge of a chemical sample in the liquid phase. In the time domain, our measurements resolve the gradual appearance of absorption features below the carbon K-edge of ethanol and methanol during strong-field ionization and trace the valence-shell ionization dynamics of the liquid alcohols with a temporal resolution of ∼30 fs. This technique opens unique opportunities to study molecular dynamics of chemical systems in the liquid phase with elemental, orbital, and site sensitivity.

Probing warm dense matter using femtosecond X-ray absorption spectroscopy with a laser-produced betatron source

Exploring and understanding ultrafast processes at the atomic level is a scientific challenge. Femtosecond X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) arises as an essential experimental probing method, as it can simultaneously reveal both electronic and atomic structures, and thus potentially unravel their nonequilibrium dynamic interplay which is at the origin of most of the ultrafast mechanisms. However, despite considerable efforts, there is still no femtosecond X-ray source suitable for routine experiments. Here we show that betatron radiation from relativistic laser−plasma interaction combines ideal features for femtosecond XAS. It has been used to investigate the nonequilibrium dynamics of a copper sample brought at extreme conditions of temperature and pressure by a femtosecond laser pulse. We measured a rise-time of the electron temperature below 100 fs. This experiment demonstrates the great potential of the table-top betatron source which makes possible the investigation of unexplored ultrafast processes in manifold fields of research.

Ultrafast modulation of electronic structure by coherent phonon excitations.

Femtosecond x-ray absorption spectroscopy with a laser-driven high-harmonic source is used to map ultrafast changes of x-ray absorption by femtometer-scale coherent phonon displacements. In LiBH4, displacements along an phonon mode at 10 THz are induced by impulsive Raman excitation and give rise to oscillatory changes of x-ray absorption at the Li K-edge. Electron density maps from femtosecond x-ray diffraction data show that the electric field of the pump pulse induces a charge transfer from the to neighboring Li+ ions, resulting in a differential Coulomb force that drives lattice vibrations in this virtual transition state.

Ultrafast Excited State Relaxation of a Metalloporphyrin Revealed by Femtosecond X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy.

Photoexcited Nickel(II) tetramesitylporphyrin (NiTMP), like many open-shell metalloporphyrins, relaxes rapidly through multiple electronic states following an initial porphyrin-based excitation, some involving metal centered electronic configuration changes that could be harnessed catalytically before excited state relaxation. While a NiTMP excited state present at 100 ps was previously identified by X-ray transient absorption (XTA) spectroscopy at a synchrotron source as a relaxed (d,d) state, the lowest energy excited state (J. Am. Chem. Soc., 2007, 129, 9616 and Chem. Sci., 2010, 1, 642), structural dynamics before thermalization were not resolved due to the ∼100 ps duration of the available X-ray probe pulse. Using the femtosecond (fs) X-ray pulses of the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS), the Ni center electronic configuration from the initial excited state to the relaxed (d,d) state has been obtained via ultrafast Ni K-edge XANES (X-ray absorption near edge structure) on a time scale from hundreds of femtoseconds to 100 ps. This enabled the identification of a short-lived Ni(I) species aided by time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) methods. Computed electronic and nuclear structure for critical excited electronic states in the relaxation pathway characterize the dependence of the complex's geometry on the electron occupation of the 3d orbitals. Calculated XANES transitions for these excited states assign a short-lived transient signal to the spectroscopic signature of the Ni(I) species, resulting from intramolecular charge transfer on a time scale that has eluded previous synchrotron studies. These combined results enable us to examine the excited state structural dynamics of NiTMP prior to thermal relaxation and to capture intermediates of potential photocatalytic significance.

Observing heme doming in myoglobin with femtosecond X-ray absorption spectroscopy.

We report time-resolved X-ray absorption measurements after photolysis of carbonmonoxy myoglobin performed at the LCLS X-ray free electron laser with nearly 100 fs (FWHM) time resolution. Data at the Fe K-edge reveal that the photoinduced structural changes at the heme occur in two steps, with a faster (∼70 fs) relaxation preceding a slower (∼400 fs) one. We tentatively attribute the first relaxation to a structural rearrangement induced by photolysis involving essentially only the heme chromophore and the second relaxation to a residual Fe motion out of the heme plane that is coupled to the displacement of myoglobin F-helix.

Femtosecond x-ray absorption spectroscopy with hard x-ray free electron laser

We have developed a method of dispersive x-ray absorption spectroscopy with a hard x-ray free electron laser (XFEL), generated by a self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) mechanism. A transmission grating was utilized for splitting SASE-XFEL light, which has a relatively large bandwidth (ΔE/E ∼ 5 × 10−3), into several branches. Two primary split beams were introduced into a dispersive spectrometer for measuring signal and reference spectra simultaneously. After normalization, we obtained a Zn K-edge absorption spectrum with a photon-energy range of 210 eV, which is in excellent agreement with that measured by a conventional wavelength-scanning method. From the analysis of the difference spectra, the noise ratio was evaluated to be ∼3 × 10−3, which is sufficiently small to trace minute changes in transient spectra induced by an ultrafast optical laser. This scheme enables us to perform single-shot, high-accuracy x-ray absorption spectroscopy with femtosecond time resolution.

Femtosecond X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy at a Hard X-ray Free Electron Laser: Application to Spin Crossover Dynamics

X-ray free electron lasers (XFELs) deliver short (<100 fs) and intense (∼10(12) photons) pulses of hard X-rays, making them excellent sources for time-resolved studies. Here we show that, despite the inherent instabilities of current (SASE based) XFELs, they can be used for measuring high-quality X-ray absorption data and we report femtosecond time-resolved X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) measurements of a spin-crossover system, iron(II) tris(2,2'-bipyridine) in water. The data indicate that the low-spin to high-spin transition can be modeled by single-exponential kinetics convoluted with the overall time resolution. The resulting time constant is ∼160 fs.

Probing the Transition from Hydrophilic to Hydrophobic Solvation with Atomic Scale Resolution

Picosecond and femtosecond X-ray absorption spectroscopy is used to probe the changes of the solvent shell structure upon electron abstraction of aqueous iodide using an ultrashort laser pulse. The transient L(1,3) edge EXAFS at 50 ps time delay points to the formation of an expanded water cavity around the iodine atom, in good agreement with classical and quantum mechanical/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. These also show that while the hydrogen atoms pointed toward iodide, they predominantly point toward the bulk solvent in the case of iodine, suggesting a hydrophobic behavior. This is further confirmed by quantum chemical (QC) calculations of I(-)/I(0)(H(2)O)(n=1-4) clusters. The L(1) edge sub-picosecond spectra point to the existence of a transient species that is not present at 50 ps. The QC calculations and the QM/MM MD simulations identify this transient species as an I(0)(OH(2)) complex inside the cavity. The simulations show that upon electron abstraction most of the water molecules move away from iodine, while one comes closer to form the complex that lives for 3-4 ps. This time is governed by the reorganization of the main solvation shell, basically the time it takes for the water molecules to reform an H-bond network. Only then is the interaction with the solvation shell strong enough to pull the water molecule of the complex toward the bulk solvent. Overall, much of the behavior at early times is determined by the reorientational dynamics of water molecules and the formation of a complete network of hydrogen bonded molecules in the first solvation shell.

Ultrafast X-ray Absorption Studies of the Structural Dynamics of Molecular and Biological Systems in Solution

We review our recent studies of excited state structures and dynamics of chemical and biological systems with pico- and femtosecond X-ray absorption spectroscopy in the liquid phase.

Femtosecond x-ray absorption spectroscopy of spin and orbital angular momentum in photoexcited Ni films during ultrafast demagnetization

We follow for the first time the evolution of the spin and orbital angular momentum of a thin Ni film during ultrafast demagnetization, by means of x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. Both components decrease with a 130 +/- 40 fs time constant upon excitation with a femtosecond laser pulse. Additional x-ray absorption measurements reveal an increase in the spin-orbit interaction by 6 +/- 2 % during this process. This is the experimental demonstration quantifying the importance of spin-orbit mediated processes during the demagnetization.

Picosecond and femtosecond X-ray absorption spectroscopy of molecular systems

The need to visualize molecular structure in the course of a chemical reaction, a phase transformation or a biological function has been a dream of scientists for decades. The development of time-resolved X-ray and electron-based methods is making this true. X-ray absorption spectroscopy is ideal for the study of structural dynamics in liquids, because it can be implemented in amorphous media. Furthermore, it is chemically selective. Using X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) in laser pump/X-ray probe experiments allows the retrieval of the local geometric structure of the system under study, but also the underlying photoinduced electronic structure changes that drive the structural dynamics. Recent developments in picosecond and femtosecond X-ray absorption spectroscopy applied to molecular systems in solution are reviewed: examples on ultrafast photoinduced processes such as intramolecular electron transfer, low-to-high spin change, and bond formation are presented.

Band-Selective Measurements of Electron Dynamics inVO2Using Femtosecond Near-Edge X-Ray Absorption

We report on the first demonstration of femtosecond x-ray absorption spectroscopy, made uniquely possible by the use of broadly tunable bending-magnet radiation from "laser-sliced" electron bunches within a synchrotron storage ring. We measure the femtosecond electronic rearrangements that occur during the photoinduced insulator-metal phase transition in VO2. Symmetry- and element-specific x-ray absorption from V2p and O1s core levels (near 500 eV) separately measures the filling dynamics of differently hybridized V3d-O2p electronic bands near the Fermi level.
