Transgenerational effects of the maternal gestational environment on the post-natal performance of beef cattle: A reaction norm approach.

In tropical beef cattle production systems, animals are commonly raised on pastures, exposing them to potential stressors. The end of gestation typically overlaps with a dry period characterized by limited food availability. Late gestation is pivotal for fetal development, making it an ideal scenario for inter- and transgenerational effects of the maternal gestational environment. Intergenerational effects occur due to exposure during gestation, impacting the development of the embryo and its future germline. Transgenerational effects, however, extend beyond direct exposure to the subsequent generations. The objective of the present study was to verify these effects on the post-natal performance of zebu beef cattle. We extended the use of a reaction norm model to identify genetic variation in the animals' responses to transgenerational effects. The inter- and transgenerational effects were predominantly positive (-0.09% to 19.74%) for growth and reproductive traits, indicating improved animal performance on the phenotypic scale in more favourable maternal gestational environments. Additionally, these effects were more pronounced in the reproductive performance of females. On average, the ratio of direct additive genetic variances of the slope and intercept of the reaction norm ranged from 1.23% to 3.60% for direct and from 10.17% to 11.42% for maternal effects. Despite its relatively modest magnitude, this variation proved sufficient to prompt modifications in parameter estimates. The average percentage variation of direct heritability estimates ranged from 19.3% for scrotal circumference to 33.2% for yearling weight across the environmental descriptors evaluated. Genetic correlations between distant environments for the studied traits were generally high for direct effects and far from unity for maternal effects. Changes in EBV rankings of sires across different gestational environments were also observed. Due to the multifaceted nature of inter- and transgenerational effects of the maternal gestational environment on various traits of beef cattle raised under tropical pasture conditions, they should not be overlooked by producers and breeders. There were differences in the specific response of beef cattle to variations in the quality of the maternal gestational environment, which can be partially explained by transgenerational epigenetic inheritance. Adopting a reaction norm model to capture a portion of the additive variance induced by inter- or transgenerational effects could be an alternative for future research and animal genetic evaluations.

14 Effects of increasing daily dietary standardized ileal digestible lysine intake of gilts and sows during d 35 to 112 of gestation on reproductive performance

Abstract Our objective was to determine the effects of increasing daily dietary standardized ileal digestible (SID) lysine (Lys) intake during d 35 to 112 of gestation on sow and litter performance. A total of 704 gilts and sows (PIC Camborough) were used. Females were group-housed after d 35 of gestation and individually fed with electronic sow feeders (ESF). At d 35 of gestation, females were balanced for body weight (BW) and caliper scores within parity categories, and randomly allotted to 1 of 4 treatments. Treatments consisted of increasing daily dietary SID Lys intake (11.1, 13.5, 16.1, and 18.5 g/d). Both gilts and sows received 2.37 kg/d of a gestation diet containing 3.17 Mcal of ME/kg, which was estimated to avoid feeding females below their maintenance requirements throughout the entire gestation. Treatments were achieved by different blend of low (0.47% SID Lys) and high (0.78% SID Lys) Lys diets via ESF based on the set feed allowance for females. Sow was the experimental unit and data were analyzed using generalized linear mixed models with the lmer and glmerfunctions of R, considering treatment, parity, and their interaction as fixed effects. There was no evidence (P > 0.10) of treatment and parity interaction for any response criteria. Body weight at d 112 of gestation and BW change from d 35 to 112 of gestation increased (linear; P < 0.05) with increasing daily dietary SID Lys intake (Table 1). No evidence for SID Lys treatment differences were observed for BW at weaning or BW change during lactation (P > 0.10). There was no evidence (P > 0.10) for treatment differences on caliper score (CS) at d 35 of gestation, d 112 of gestation, at weaning, or CS changes during gestation and lactation. There was no evidence for treatment difference on total born, percentage stillbirth and percentage of mummified fetuses (P > 0.10). However, there was a marginal reduction in percentage born alive piglets (quadratic, P = 0.056), with the least proportion of piglets born alive observed in females receiving 16.1g of daily SID Lys intake from d35 to d112 of gestation. Increasing daily dietary SID Lys intake during d 35 to 112 of gestation did not affect piglet birth weight, piglet average daily gain during lactation, proportion of removed pigs, and proportion of dead pigs during lactation. In summary, increasing daily dietary SID Lys intake during d35-to-112 of gestation increased female BW; however, no evidence of benefits was observed for female reproductive performance and litter performance during lactation.

Effect of prolonged photoperiod on growth, gonadal development, sex ratio, and skin coloration of red tilapia (O. mossambicus × O. urolepis hornorum)

AbstractFarming of red tilapia is one promising direction in aquaculture. The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of long-day photoperiod on the growth performance, reproductive parameters, maturity, sex ratio, β-carotene content, and skin coloration of red tilapia. Early life larvae were allocated into three treatment groups in triplicates: T1 = control group (12L:12D), T2 = long-day group (18L:6D), and T3 = continuous illumination group (24L:0D) for 90 days. By the end of the experiment, gonadosomatic index (GSI), relative fecundity, steroid hormones, maturity stages, sex ratio, and ovarian and testicular histology were examined; also, growth performance, survival rate, skin color, and total β-carotene content were measured. The results indicated that GSI% and serum testosterone (T) in T3 group significantly increased with greater amount of spermatozoa of male fish. Also, growth parameters and HSI% in female fish displayed significantly increased for T3 group. Females in group T2 showed significant elevation in GSI%, relative fecundity, and estradiol (E2) with higher number of mature stage. Continuous light group (T3) showed shifted male sex ratio, while female percentage was higher in T2 group. The total β-carotene content of T3 group showed significant elevation with less number of black spots. This study demonstrated that continuous light manipulation during red tilapia early life could stimulate the growth and enhance coloration by reducing black spots that significantly affects economic profitability. Long-day application was effective in female reproductive performance and maturity. This study also served as an important reference for red tilapia aquaculture.

Outcomes of female reproductive performance with assisted reproductive techniques after recent mild to moderate COVID-19 infections: An observational study.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy (PGT-A) on clinical outcomes among high-risk patients. This retrospective study involved 1,368 patients and the same number of cycles, including 520 cycles with PGT-A and 848 cycles without PGT-A. The study participants comprised women of advanced maternal age (AMA) and those affected by recurrent implantation failure (RIF), recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL), or severe male factor infertility (SMF). PGT-A was associated with significant improvements in the implantation rate (IR) and the ongoing pregnancy rate/live birth rate (OPR/LBR) per embryo transfer cycle in the AMA (39.3% vs. 16.2% [p<0.001] and 42.0% vs. 21.8% [p<0.001], respectively), RIF (41.7% vs. 22.0% [p<0.001] and 47.0% vs. 28.6% [p<0.001], respectively), and RPL (45.6% vs. 19.5% [p<0.001] and 49.1% vs. 24.2% [p<0.001], respectively) groups, as well as the IR in the SMF group (43.3% vs. 26.5%, p=0.011). Additionally, PGT-A was associated with lower overall incidence rates of pregnancy loss in the AMA (16.7% vs. 34.3%, p=0.001) and RPL (16.7% vs. 50.0%, p<0.001) groups. However, the OPR/LBR per total cycle across all PGT-A groups did not significantly exceed that for the control groups. PGT-A demonstrated beneficial effects in high-risk patients. However, our findings indicate that these benefits are more pronounced in carefully selected candidates than in the entire high-risk patient population.

Assessing and Screening of Female Fertility in Artificially Bred Asian Yellow Pond Turtles (Mauremys mutica) Based on Parentage Assignment

The Asian yellow pond turtle (Mauremys mutica) is widely traded in China, and its artificial breeding has now become a major industry. However, the insufficient offspring supply and reproductive decline of farmed turtles make the wild turtles more vulnerable. The present study was mainly designed to quantify the fecundity of M. mutica and attempt to screen for good reproductive performance in females. The genetic variability of the population and its genetic structure were also analysed. The parent–offspring relationships of all offspring in four consecutive years were confirmed using sixteen microsatellite loci. The genetic variability between the parents and offspring was low, and offspring of different years also showed little variability. We summarised the reproductive results of all females and counted the annual number of offspring and the variation in the number of offspring. The females were then divided into three types (stable, undulating and levelling off) according to the continuity. We selected seven females with good reproductive ability, which provided 16.94% of the annual contributions, while there were two females that had no offspring in four years. We also analysed the possible reasons for this difference and the importance of carrying out a family survey. This research can provide the basis and materials for the creation of a good reproductive group and the study of the reproductive biology of turtles in M. mutica aquaculture.

Identifying selection signatures for immune response and resilience to Aleutian disease in mink using genotype data.

Aleutian disease (AD) brings tremendous financial losses to the mink industry. Selecting AD-resilient mink has been conducted to control AD. Such selections could have altered the patterns of genetic variation responding to selection pressures. This study aimed to identify selection signatures for immune response (IRE) and resilience to AD. A total of 1,411 mink from an AD-positive facility were used. For IRE, 264 animals were categorized according to the combined results of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and counterimmunoelectrophoresis (CIEP). For resilience, two grouping methods were used: 1) general resilience performance (GRP, n = 30) was evaluated based on the feed conversion ratio, Kleiber ratio, and pelt quality; and 2) female reproductive performance (FRP, n = 36) was measured based on the number of kits alive 24h after birth. Detection methods were the pairwise fixation index, nucleotide diversity, and cross-population extended haplotype homozygosity. A total of 619, 569, and 526 SNPs were identified as candidates for IRE, GRP, and FRP, respectively. The annotated genes were involved in immune system process, growth, reproduction, and pigmentation. Two olfactory-related Gene Ontology (GO) terms were significant (q < 0.05) for all traits, suggesting the impact of AD on the sense of smell of infected mink. Differences in detected genes and GO terms among different color types for IRE indicated variations in immune response to AD among color types. The mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathway was significant (q < 0.05) for FRP, suggesting that AD may disrupt MAPK signaling and affect FRP. The findings of this research contribute to our knowledge of the genomic architecture and biological mechanisms underlying AD resilience in mink.

PSXII-9 Identifying Selection Signatures for Immune Response and Resilience to Aleutian Disease in Mink Using Genotypes Data

Abstract Aleutian disease (AD), a severe immune-complex disease, brings tremendous financial losses to the mink industry. Resilience is the ability of an animal to minimize the influences caused by disturbances and maintain its performance under pathogen exposure. Many AD-positive farms have selected AD-resilient mink based on AD tests and/or AD-resilience indicator traits, such as growth, pelt quality, and reproduction. Selection based on these indicator traits may have changed the patterns of genetic variation and potentially represent a genomic signature that can be used to identify genes subjected to selection. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to identify the selection signatures related to immune response (IRE) and resilience to AD. . A total of 1,411 mink in five color types (black, demi, mahogany, pastel, and stardust) from the Canadian Centre for Fur Animal Research (Truro, Nova Scotia, Canada), which is an AD-positive facility, were genotyped using the Axiom Affymetrix Mink 70K single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) panel. For the IRE trait, 264 mink were grouped into pairwise groups based on the combined results of counter-immunoelectrophoresis (CIEP) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) tests. Individuals in black (n = 29), demi (n = 131), mahogany (n = 76), and pastel (36) color types were also grouped based on combined results of CIEP and ELISA tests, respectively. For resilience traits, two methods were used to group CIEP-positive individuals into pairwise groups: 1) based on their general resilience performance (GRP, n = 30), which was measured by considering individual performance for feed conversion ratio, Kleiber ratio, and pelt quality, and 2) based on female reproductive performance (FRP, CIEP-positive dams only, n = 36), which was measured by the number of kits alive 24h after birth. The pairwise fixation index, nucleotide diversity, and cross-population extended haplotype homozygosity were used to detect selection signatures. Only SNPs detected by at least two methods were considered selection signatures candidates, including 619, 569, and 526 SNPs for IRE, GRP, and FRP traits, respectively. The genes annotated from the candidate SNPs were associated with previously reported traits influenced by AD, including immune system process, growth, reproduction, and pigmentation. Notably, two olfactory-related gene ontology (GO) terms were significant (q &amp;lt; 0.05) for all studied traits, suggesting AD might cause loss of smell in infected mink. Additionally, the differences in genes and GO terms detected across different color types for IRE indicated that mink of different color types may differ in immune response to AD. The mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signalling pathway was significant (q &amp;lt; 0.05) in Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway analyses for FRP, indicating AD infection may disorder the MAPK signalling pathway, in turn influencing female reproductive performance. Our study has enhanced the understanding of genomic architecture underlying resilience of mink to AD and sheds light on the underlying biological mechanisms involved.

PSVII-4 Genetic Parameters for Various Semen Quality and Reproductive Performance Traits in Nellore Cattle Including X Chromosome Markers

Abstract Estimating genetic parameters of male and female fertility and reproduction traits is essential for optimizing beef cattle breeding programs. In general, only markers located on autosomal chromosomes are used for genetic evaluations. Sex chromosomes tend to be excluded due to the compensation mechanism of dosage of genes linked to the X chromosome, which is the second largest chromosome in the cattle genome and harbors many genes potentially influencing these traits. Therefore, we estimated genomic-based variance components, including the X chromosome in the variance components analysis for female precocity, fertility, and andrological traits based on the single-step GBLUP procedure and Bayesian inference. The dataset consisted of ~120,000 records for the probability of pregnancy at 14 months (PP14), early rebreeding (REBA), and stability (STAY). From the breeding soundness exam (BSE) of bulls, 20,000 records were obtained for semen quality, andrological biometry, semen defects, and bull fitness (BULL_FIT). The pedigree contained 660,608 animals, where 11,012 animals were genotyped for 770,111 SNPs. All traits have reasonable additive genetic variation and are heritable, with a substantial contribution from the X chromosome, indicating that genetic progress for these traits is feasible. The heritability estimates (h2) explained by autosomal and X chromosome SNPs was low and low-to-moderate, respectively, for female reproductive performance traits, such as REBA [0.17 (auto); 0.07 (sex chr)], PP14 (0.42;0.05), and STAY (0.32;0.01). For male traits, the heritability estimates based on the autosomes and X chromosome, respectively, ranged from 0.02 to 0.04 and from 0.01 to 0.03 for semen quality traits; from 0.10 to 0.68 and from 0.02 to 0.07 for morphological traits; from 0.10 to 0.12 and from 0.01 to 0.02 for semen defects traits; for bull evaluation (BULL_FIT) were observed h2 for autosomes 0.18 and 0.10 for sexual chromosome X. The results observed in this study indicate a substantial contribution of the X chromosome on fertility and reproductive performance traits. These findings will serve as background information for designing breeding programs for genetically improving semen production and quality and reproductive performance in Nellore cattle.

Association between Phytoestrogen Consumption and Female Reproductive Health: A Systematic Review of Experimental Models

AbstractPhytoestrogens have been shown as promising therapeutic agents for the treatment of menopausal symptoms, osteoporosis, breast cancer, and cardiovascular diseases. However, due to its unique chemical structure, phytoestrogen may cause unintended estrogenic and/or antiestrogenic effects on the human body, especially with regard to female reproductive health and performance. Hence, this systematic review aims to provide a critical evaluation of in vitro and in vivo evidence from the literature regarding the adverse effects of phytoestrogens on female reproductive health. The literature search was performed on four electronic databases including Scopus, Science Direct, PubMed, and Google Scholar following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. A total of 965 studies were screened but only 58 of them were found to be relevant and assessed for eligibility. Of these, 23 studies met the eligibility criteria while the remaining studies were excluded due to insufficiently described methods and lack of clear findings being reported. From the review, phytoestrogens may alter the development of reproductive organs, prolong the estrus cycle, induce the accumulation of fluid in the uterus, and inhibit ovulation. The concentration and exposure duration of phytoestrogens may have different effects on the reproductive organs. Thus, further studies are warranted on the toxicodynamic, toxicokinetic, mode of action, and mechanism of actions of phytoestrogens on the female reproductive system to establish recommendations regarding phytoestrogen supplement consumption for women.

Genetic parameters for various semen production and quality traits and indicators of male and female reproductive performance in Nellore cattle

BackgroundGiven the economic relevance of fertility and reproductive traits for the beef cattle industry, investigating their genetic background and developing effective breeding strategies are paramount. Considering their late and sex-dependent phenotypic expression, genomic information can contribute to speed up the rates of genetic progress per year. In this context, the main objectives of this study were to estimate variance components and genetic parameters, including heritability and genetic correlations, for fertility, female precocity, and semen production and quality (andrological attributes) traits in Nellore cattle incorporating genomic information.ResultsThe heritability estimates of semen quality traits were low-to-moderate, while moderate-to-high estimates were observed for semen morphological traits. The heritability of semen defects ranged from low (0.04 for minor semen defects) to moderate (0.30 for total semen defects). For seminal aspect (SMN_ASPC) and bull reproductive fitness (BULL_FIT), low (0.19) and high (0.69) heritabilities were observed, respectively. The heritability estimates for female reproductive traits ranged from 0.16 to 0.39 for rebreeding of precocious females (REBA) and probability of pregnancy at 14 months (PP14), respectively. Semen quality traits were highly genetically correlated among themselves. Moderate-to-high genetic correlations were observed between the ability to remain productive in the herd until four years of age (stayability; STAY) and the other reproductive traits, indicating that selection for female reproductive performance will indirectly contribute to increasing fertility rates. High genetic correlations between BULL_FIT and female reproductive traits related to precocity (REBA and PP14) and STAY were observed. The genetic correlations between semen quality and spermatic morphology with female reproductive traits ranged from -0.22 (REBA and scrotal circumference) to 0.48 (REBA and sperm vigor). In addition, the genetic correlations between REBA with semen quality traits ranged from -0.23 to 0.48, and with the spermatic morphology traits it ranged from -0.22 to 0.19.ConclusionsAll male and female fertility and reproduction traits evaluated are heritable and can be improved through direct genetic or genomic selection. Selection for better sperm quality will positively influence the fertility and precocity of Nellore females. The findings of this study will serve as background information for designing breeding programs for genetically improving semen production and quality and reproductive performance in Nellore cattle.

&lt;i&gt;Corrigendum to&lt;/i&gt;: Production and performance of commercial beef breeding females in northern Australia. 4. Factors influencing the occurrence of lactating cows becoming pregnant within 4 months of calving

&lt;sec&gt; Context Sound reproductive efficiency is a key determinant for the overall productivity of a beef breeding business. For beef breeding herds to obtain high levels of reproductive productivity, breeding females need to efficiently become pregnant while lactating. &lt;/sec&gt; &lt;sec&gt; Aims This study aimed to determine and quantify the major factors associated with lactating cows becoming pregnant within 4months of calving (P4M) in commercial beef breeding herds of northern Australia. &lt;/sec&gt; &lt;sec&gt; Methods A prospective epidemiological study was conducted using 78 commercial northern Australian beef breeding herds and involved 78&amp;#x2009;000 cattle that were monitored for 3&amp;#x2013;4years. A multivariable model-building process was employed to scrutinise the resulting dataset to identify what herd-management practices, and nutritional, environmental and individual cow factors were major determinants of lactating cows becoming pregnant within 4months of calving (P4M) and to estimate their magnitudes of effect. &lt;/sec&gt; &lt;sec&gt; Key results Overall, 41.6% of cows per production year were successful for P4M. Country type was strongly associated with 65.4%, 57.5%, 61.8% and 16.4% P4M for the Southern Forest, Central Forest, Northern Downs, and Northern Forest respectively. Between-year variability ranged between 3.3 and 11.7 percentage points. Cows calving in December&amp;#x2013;January (61%) had a substantially higher occurrence of P4M than did cows calving between July and September (15%). The difference in P4M when comparing availability of wet-season pasture protein and phosphorus was 12.7 and 20.3 percentage points respectively. Modelling of the impact of group seroprevalence and management group prevalence of recent infection with several infectious diseases was estimated, with a large negative association between group bovine viral diarrhoea seroprevalence and P4M suggested. &lt;/sec&gt; &lt;sec&gt; Conclusions This study further demonstrated the substantial impact that environment, herd management practices, nutrition and disease factors can have on the reproductive performance of females. &lt;/sec&gt; &lt;sec&gt; Implications To optimise the performance of females (through increasing the occurrence of cows contributing calves in consecutive years) under commercial conditions in northern Australia, herd managers should focus on maximising the proportion of cows within a herd calving at the desired time of the year, ensuring that any nutritional deficiencies and herd health issues are managed, and that cows are managed such that they are of good body condition score at the time of calving. &lt;/sec&gt;

Genomic prediction of service sire effect on female reproductive performance in Holstein cattle: A comparison between different methods, validation population and marker densities.

Reproductive traits of dairy cattle are bound to the actual efficiency of farm operation, which therefore show great economic importance. Among them, some traits were deemed to be simultaneously affected by service sire and mating cow. Service sires are proved to play an important role in reproduction process of cows. However, limited study explored the genetic effect of service sire (GESS), let alone the genomic prediction of this effect. In the present study, 2244 genotyped bulls together with phenotypic records were used to predict the GESS on conception rate, 56-day non-return rate, calving ease, stillbirth and gestation length. The feasibilities of multi-step genomic best linear unbiased predictor (msGBLUP) and single-step genomic best linear unbiased predictor (ssGBLUP) were investigated under different scenarios, that is, different marker densities and validation population. The predictive accuracies and unbiasedness for GESS ranged from 0.159 to 0.647 and from 0.202 to 2.018, respectively, when validated on young bulls, while the accuracies and unbiasedness ranged from 0.409 to 0.802 and 0.333 to 1.146 when validated on random split data sets. It is feasible to predict GESS on reproductive traits by using a linear mixed model and genomic data, and high-density marker panel had limited contribution to the prediction. This research investigated the potential factors that influence the genomic prediction of GESS on reproductive traits and indicated the possibility of genomic selection on GESS, both in ideal and practical circumstances.

Alterations in gonadotropin, apoptotic and metabolic pathways in granulosa cells warrant superior fertility of the Dummerstorf high fertility mouse line 1

The development and maturation of ovarian follicles is a complex and highly regulated process, which is essential for successful ovulation. During recent decades, several mouse models provided insights into the regulation of folliculogenesis. In contrast to the commonly used transgenic or knockout mouse models, the Dummerstorf high-fertility mouse line 1 (FL1) is a worldwide unique selection experiment for increased female reproductive performance and extraordinary high fertility. Interactions of cycle-related alterations of parameters of the hypothalamic pituitary gonadal axis and molecular factors in the ovary lead to improved follicular development and therefore increased ovulation rates in FL1 mice. FL1 females almost doubled the number of ovulated oocytes compared to the unselected control mouse line. To gain insights into the cellular mechanisms leading to the high fertility phenotype we used granulosa cells isolated from antral follicles for mRNA sequencing. Based on the results of the transcriptome analysis we additionally measured hormones and growth factors associated with follicular development to complement the picture of how the signaling pathways are regulated. While IGF1 levels are decreased in FL1 mice in estrus, we found no differences in insulin, prolactin and oxytocin levels in FL1 mice compared to the control line. The results of the mRNA sequencing approach revealed that the actions of insulin, prolactin and oxytocin are restricted local to the granulosa cells, since hormonal receptor expression is differentially regulated in FL1 mice. Additionally, numerous genes, which are involved in important gonadotropin, apoptotic and metabolic signaling pathways in granulosa cells, are differentially regulated in granulosa cells of FL1 mice.We showed that an overlap of different signaling pathways reflects the crosstalk between gonadotropin and growth factor signaling pathways, follicular atresia in FL1 mice is decreased due to improved granulosa cell survival and by improving the efficiency of intracellular signaling, glucose metabolism and signal transduction, FL1 mice have several advantages in reproductive performance and therefore increased the ovulation rate. Therefore, this worldwide unique high fertility model can provide new insights into different factors leading to improved follicular development and has the potential to improve our understanding of high fertility.

Diet quality impairs male and female reproductive performance and affects the opportunity for selection in an insect model.

Environmental factors can have profound effects on the strength and direction of selection and recent studies suggest that such environment-dependent selection can be sex-specific. Sexual selection theory predicts that male fitness is more condition dependent compared to female fitness, suggesting that male fitness is more sensitive to environmental stress. However, our knowledge about the effect of environmental factors on sex-specific reproductive performance and on sex differences in the opportunity for selection is still very limited. In the present study, we investigated the sex-specific effects of diet quality (yeast deprivation and flour type) in the red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum. Specifically, we manipulated yeast supplementation in wheat and whole-wheat flour in competition assays allowing us to test for sex-specific effects of food quality (i) on reproductive success and (ii) on the opportunity for selection. Our data show that yeast deprivation in wheat flour had significantly negative effects on body mass and reproductive success of both sexes, while high-quality flour (whole-wheat flour) was able to buffer the negative impact to a large extent. Importantly, our data suggest no sex-specific effect of dietary stress on reproductive success because the magnitude of the negative effect of yeast deprivation was similar for males and females. Moreover, our study demonstrates that low food quality inflated the opportunity for selection and did not differ between sexes neither under benign nor stressful dietary conditions. We discuss the implications of our findings for the adaptation to stressful environments.

A haplodiploid mite adjusts fecundity and sex ratio in response to density changes during the reproductive period.

Population density is one of the main socio-environmental factors that have critical impacts on reproduction of animals. Consequently, they need to adjust their reproductive strategies in response to changes of local population density. In this study we used a haplodiploid spider mite, Tetranychus ludeni Zacher (Acari: Tetranychidae), to test how population density dynamics during the reproductive period altered female reproductive performance. We demonstrate that females produced fewer eggs with a significantly higher female-biased sex ratio in dense populations. Reducing fecundity and increasing daughter production in a dense environment could be an advantageous strategy to minimise the intensity of local food competition. However, females also reduced their fecundity after arrival in a new site of larger area from a dense population, which may be associated with higher web production costs because females need to produce more webs to cover the larger area. There was no trade-off between egg number and size, and egg size had little impact on reproductive fitness. Therefore, T. ludeni females could adapt to the shift of population density during their reproductive period by manipulating the fecundity and offspring sex ratio but not the egg size.

Effect of Different Ambient Temperatures on Reproductive Outcome and Stress Level of Lactating Females in Two Mouse Strains.

Simple SummaryThe optimal temperature for laboratory mice has been under discussion for some time. Current standard temperature is 20 °C–24 °C but it has been suggested to elevate the standard to 30 °C, which is the thermoneutral zone for mice. In this study, the effect of different cage temperatures (20 °C, 25 °C, 30 °C) on reproduction and stress hormone metabolite excretion was evaluated in lactating females of two commonly used mouse strains. Pup loss was higher, and weights of mothers and pups were reduced at 30 °C compared to the lower temperatures. In addition, pups showed increased tail length at weaning under the high temperature (30 °C). There was no difference in stress hormone metabolite excretion in mice between temperature groups. We could not show any detrimental effects of the lower or higher cage temperature on stress hormone metabolite excretion, but found decreased reproductive outcome under the higher temperature.Ambient temperature is an important non-biotic environmental factor influencing immunological and oncological parameters in laboratory mice. It is under discussion which temperature is more appropriate and whether the commonly used room temperature in rodent facilities of about 21 °C represents a chronic cold stress or the 30 °C of the thermoneutral zone constitutes heat stress for the animals. In this study, we selected the physiological challenging period of lactation to investigate the influence of a cage temperature of 20 °C, 25 °C, and 30 °C, respectively, on reproductive performance and stress hormone levels in two frequently used mouse strains. We found that B6D2F1 hybrid mothers weaned more pups compared to C57BL/6N mothers, and that the number of weaned pups was reduced when mothers of both strains were kept at 30 °C. Furthermore, at 30 °C, mothers and pups showed reduced body weight at weaning and offspring had longer tails. Despite pronounced temperature effects on reproductive parameters, we did not find any temperature effects on adrenocortical activity in breeding and control mice. Independent of the ambient temperature, however, we found that females raising pups showed elevated levels of faecal corticosterone metabolites (FCMs) compared to controls. Peak levels of stress hormone metabolites were measured around birth and during the third week of lactation. Our results provide no evidence of an advantage for keeping lactating mice in ambient temperatures near the thermoneutral zone. In contrast, we found that a 30 °C cage temperature during lactation reduced body mass in females and their offspring and declined female reproductive performance.

Reproductive Senescence in Two Lemur Lineages

The relationship between age and reproductive performance is highly variable across species. Humans and some cetaceans exhibit an extreme form of reproductive senescence in that female reproduction ceases years or even decades before average life expectancy is reached. However, neither the existence of reproductive senescence in some taxa nor its absence in others is fully understood. Comparative data from other long-lived mammals may contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the evolution of menopause, but data from wild primates, in particular, are scarce. We therefore investigated age-related female reproductive performance in two wild sympatric populations of Malagasy primates: Verreaux’s sifakas (Propithecus verreauxi) and redfronted lemurs (Eulemur rufifrons), which have a maximal longevity of more than 20 years. Based on 25 years of long-term demographic data, we extracted information on reproductive output of 38 female Verreaux’s sifakas and 42 female redfronted lemurs. We modeled variation in female reproductive performance and interbirth intervals as a function of age, the number of adult females within a group to account for female competition, and rainfall as a proxy for annual variation in food availability. We also compared our results for these two species with data on captive populations of the same two genera that are buffered from fluctuations in environmental variables. Our analyses disclosed statistical evidence for reproductive senescence in three out of four populations (captive Coquerel’s sifakas, wild redfronted lemurs, and captive red lemurs) but not for wild Verreaux’s sifakas. Compared to wild populations, reproductive senescence was therefore not less pronounced in captive animals, even though the latter are buffered from environmental adversities. In wild redfronted lemurs, mothers were more likely to give birth in years with more rainfall, but neither the number of co-resident females, nor annual rainfall did predict variation in the probability of giving birth in wild Verreaux’s sifakas. Thus, our study contributes valuable comparative information on reproductive senescence in a basal group of primates, and offers insights into the modulating effects of environmental, social and phylogenetic factors on patterns and dynamics of age-specific female reproduction.

Vitamin D and calcium, together and separately, play roles in female reproductive performance

Vitamin D (VD) deficiency reduces the chances of successful fertilization; however, it remains to be validated whether this effect is dependent or not on calcium. To address this question, we generated several situation using a mouse model in which VD content was either increased or decreased in a normo or hypocalcemia context. After the measurement of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D2, calcium and phosphorus levels, an analysis was carried out in terms of oocytes maturation as well as reproductive performance. VD overdose, despite the fact that it resulted in an increased number of mature oocytes, reduced developmental competence and offspring survival. VD deficiency (VDD), on the contrary, reduced the number and percentage of mature oocytes, blastocyst rate, as well as fertility rate and offspring survival. Hypo-calcemia when VD levels were normal, had a similar effect than VDD. The effects of VDD were reversed by a diet that corrected calcium level. Therefore, both VD overdose (in a context of normal calcium level) VD deficiency as well as hypo-calcemia have an effect on female reproductive function. In conclusion, although closely related, VD and calcium act in part independently of each other in defining the “optimum” for female reproductive performance.

Adverse effects of UV-C irradiation on the morphology of reproductive organs, fecundity, and fertility of the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum Herbst (Coleoptera; Tenebrionidae)

The effects of UV-C irradiation on the size of male and female reproductive organs, reproductive performance and total protein amount in reproductive organs of Tribolium castaneum Herbst (1797) resulted from 0-d-old pupae exposed to 1-to-64 min were determined. UV-C irradiation from 4 to 64 min, resulted in a reduction in size of the gonads. The degree of atrophy increased as the increase of irradiation time where long duration of radiation resulted in decreasing on the size of testicular lobe, rod-shape accessory gland, tubular accessory gland and lacking of seminal vesicle in male beetle. Radiation for more than 4 min also reduced the size of germarium, lateral oviduct and lacking oocyte in ovarioles. No egg chamber formed in UV-C radiation groups for 8, 16, 32, and 64 min. Reciprocal crosses of female adults emerging from UV-C radiated pupae for 4 min and control or UV-C radiated male showed the decreased number of eggs laid and hatching rate compared to the control. Interestingly, the sterility index was 100% when UV-C radiated male was mated with UV-C radiated female. In addition, UV-C radiation clearly reduced the total protein amount in the reproductive organs of T. castaneum which correlate with the reduction on the size of reproductive organs.
