The effect of feeding a mixture of shellfish meal and fish oil on egg production and egg storability of Lohmann Brown laying hens

The aim of the research was to determine the effect of feeding a mixture of shellfish (SF) and fish oil (FO) on egg production performance and storability of Lohmann Brown hen eggs. The study used a completely randomized design consisting of 4 treatments and 4 replications, and each replication consisted of 40 Lohman Brown hens with the same laying age (45 weeks of age). The four treatments were mixed levels of shellfish flour with fish oil in feed, namely 0%, 1%, 2%, and 3%, as treatments P0, P1, P2, and P3. Egg samples were taken at the end of the study, then stored and observed for 4 weeks. The results showed that egg pH and haugh units (HU) in the P2 and P3 hen groups significantly (P<0.05) increased. Meanwhile, egg shell weight and egg yolk color did not show significant differences (P>005). Feeding SFFO to P2 and P3 hen groups increased (P<0.05) egg weight, hen-day-production and feed efficiency (feed consumption/egg weight). It can be concluded that SFFO can be used as an ingredient in laying hens with an inclusion level of 20-30g/kg and can be used in chicken feed during the finishing phase. SFFO may affect the storability of Lohmann Brown hen eggs.

Effect of Replacing Fishmeal with Algal Meal on Growth Parameters and Meat Composition in Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss W.)

Aquafarms should reduce the use of fishmeal and fish oil in nutritional feed. One such accessible and relatively inexpensive food component that could successfully meet the challenge posed by aquaculture is algae. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the algae meal inclusion of Chlorella and Spirulina sp. in a diet for rainbow trout, evaluating its effects on fish growth, histological parameters and fillet quality. Experiments were carried out to replace 50% and 100% of fishmeal with Spirulina sp. and Chlorella vulgaris in feed for rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss W.) cultured in a recirculation system. At the end of the experimental period, the highest mean live weight was measured in rainbow trout fed a feed containing 50% algal meal in the feed. The absorptive vacuolization of cells was increased the most and lamina propria was average thickened when fed 50% algae diets. Fat droplets in the hepatocytes were larger in the 50% algae meal fed group, and their nuclei were replaced in the peripheral zone of the cells. Substitution of fishmeal with 50% algal meal in fish feed resulted in a 36.44% reduction in the lipid content of rainbow trout fillets compared to control fish.

Diets including l-carnitine and varying oil sources regulate liver and testes fatty acids profile and interfere with sperm production in silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen)

This study aimed to evaluate seminal and sperm production, growth, health, and lipid metabolism of male silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) fed diets containing l-carnitine and varying lipid sources. Herein, males and females (167.33 ± 9.24 g) were both fed across 223 d with eight (08) isoproteic (282 g of digestible protein kg of ration −1) and isoenergetic (13.34 MJ of digestible energy kg of ration −1) diets, containing 0.00, 0.15, 0.45, and 0.75 g l-carnitine kg −1 of feed, soybean, and marine fish oils. Feeding males with diets containing l-carnitine and different oils resulted in an interactive effect (p < 0.05) that improved sperm production. Furthermore, males fed soybean oil and 0.45 g l-carnitine kg −1 had the highest seminal pH and sperm velocities. Fish fed fish oil and 0.75 g l-carnitine kg−1 had the highest gonadosomatic indexes, sperm production, and superoxide dismutase activities recorded in the testes. The testes of these fish also showed increases in docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), n-3 fatty acids, and higher n-3: n-6 ratios. The individual effect of oils produced viscera with more (p < 0.05) fat, in addition to having higher (p < 0.05) blood levels of albumin, total cholesterol, triglycerides, alongside the lowest level of aspartate aminotransferase in fish fed marine fish oil. The individual effect of l-carnitine also produced muscles with less (p < 0.05) fat, in addition to the highest (p < 0.05) amount of total cholesterol with the lowest amount of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol in the blood of fish fed with 0.75 g l-carnitine kg−1. l-carnitine and oils in the diets promoted hepatic and testicular protection whilst regulating lipid metabolism and fatty acid profile in the liver and testes of silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) males. These benefits led to greater sperm production when fish oil and 0.75 g kg −1 were used, and faster spermatozoa with soybean oil and 0.45 g kg −1.

Fish Oil Improves Offspring Metabolic Health of Paternal Obese Mice by Targeting Adipose Tissue.

Obesity is a fast-growing epidemic affecting more than 40% of the US population and leads to co-morbidities such as type 2 diabetes and cancer. More importantly, there is a rapid increase in childhood obesity associated with obesity in parents. Further, offspring are encoded with approximately half of their genetic information from the paternal side. Obesity in fathers at the preconceptional period likely influences the intergenerational development of obesity. This study focuses on the role of fish oil supplementation as a non-pharmacological intervention in fathers and its impact on childhood obesity using animal models. Male mice were fed a low-fat diet or high-fat diet with or without fish oil for 10 weeks and mated with female mice on a chow diet. Offspring were then continued on a chow diet until 8 or 16 weeks. In vivo insulin tolerance was tested to assess the metabolic health of offspring. Further, adipose tissue was harvested upon sacrifice, and genetic markers of inflammation and lipid metabolism in the tissue were analyzed. Offspring of males supplemented with fish oil showed lower body weight, improved insulin tolerance, and altered inflammatory markers. Markers of fatty acid oxidation were higher, while markers of fatty acid synthesis were lower in offspring of fathers fed fish oil. This supports fish oil as an accessible intervention to improve offspring metabolic health.

Fish oil consumption prevents hepatic lipid accumulation induced by high-cholesterol feeding in obese KK mice.

Fish oil (FO) is rich in the n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. It has been demonstrated that FO intake possesses lipid-lowering properties. Conversely, a high-cholesterol (CH) diet promotes lipid accumulation in the liver and induces fatty liver. This study investigated the effects of FO feeding on hepatic lipid accumulation induced by high-cholesterol feeding in KK mice. All experimental diets had a fat energy ratio of 25%, the SO group had all fat sources as safflower oil (SO), the 12.5 FO group had half of the SO replaced with FO, and the 25 FO group had all of the SO replaced with FO, each with or without 2 weight % (wt%) cholesterol (SO/CH, 12.5 FO/CH, and 25 FO/CH groups, respectively), for 8 weeks. The hepatic triglyceride and total cholesterol levels were significantly lower in the 25 FO/CH group than in the SO/CH group. The hepatic mRNAs of fatty acid synthesis-related genes were downregulated by the FO feeding groups. In view of importance to establish the benefit of FO for preventing severe NAFLD, our results suggest that FO intake prevents excessive hepatic fat accumulation induced by a high-cholesterol diet in obese KK mice through the inhibition of fatty acid synthesis.

The effect of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) as a mediator of dietary fatty acids and thiazolidinedione in pulmonary arterial hypertension induced by cold stress of broilers

The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the effects of dietary fish oil and pioglitazone as peroxisome proliferators-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) activating ligands on the reduction of cold-induced ascites in broiler chickens. A total of 480 one-day-old (Ross 308) male chicks were randomly allocated to four treatment groups with eight replicates of 15 birds each. The following treatments were used: 1) ambient temperature (negative control), with basal diet; 2) cold-induced ascites (positive control), with basal diet; 3) cold-induced ascites, with basal diet +10 mg/kg/day pioglitazone and 4) cold-induced ascites, with basal diet +1% of fish oil. When compared with the positive control, body weight gain was higher (P ≤ 0.05) for broilers fed diets containing fish oil and pioglitazone at 28, 42, and 0–42 d. Broilers under cold-induced ascites had the highest blood pressure at 21 and 42 d, while fish oil and pioglitazone treatment reduced the blood pressure (P ≤ 0.05). Red blood cells, white blood cells, hematocrit, erythrocyte osmotic fragility, bursa of Fabricius and spleen weights were improved (P ≤ 0.05) for chickens fed fish oil diets and pioglitazone compared to the cold-induced ascites (positive control). Exposure to cold temperature resulted in an increase in plasma T3 and T3/T4 ratio and decline in plasma T4 (P ≤ 0.05). In conclusion, PPARγ agonist pioglitazone and fish oil as source of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid could be used as a strategy to reduce the negative effects of pulmonary arterial hypertension and ascites in broiler chickens.

Rate of change in the fillet fatty acid profile of Nile tilapia to attain a nutraceutical level of DHA + EPA for human consumption

Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, grows adequately in the absence of dietary omega-3 long-chained polyunsaturated fatty acids, such as eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA) acid. However, its fatty acid profile can be enriched by feeding finishing diets for some time before harvesting, to reach a desirable content of 250 mg of DHA + EPA in a 100 g fillet, recommended as the daily intake of these essential fatty acids for human consumption by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, thus improving its economic and nutritional value as a nutraceutical. The objective of this study was to evaluate the rate of change in the fatty acid profile of tilapia's fillet by feeding diets formulated with soy (SO) or fish oil (FO) in an 8-week bioassay, with two additional treatments, feeding FO for four weeks followed by SO for four additional weeks (FO/SO), or the opposite treatment (SO/FO). No significant differences among treatments were observed at the end of the study for growth performance (weight gain: 103.28–115.83 g; specific growth rate: 6.60–6.83% day−1; daily weight gain: 1.95–2.19 g day−1; survival: 96.67–100%), feed efficiency (1.16–1.31), body indices (hepatosomatic index: 1.48–1.89%; condition factor, K: 2.25–2.43), or proximate composition of the fillet, confirming the versatility of tilapia to efficiently use lipid sources of different nature. However, the fatty acid profile of the dietary lipid source directly influenced the fatty acid profile of the fillet; it was confirmed that, under these experimental conditions, it is possible to enrich the fillet of O. niloticus and reach the concentration of 250 mg of DHA + EPA in a 100 g fillet in just 10 days, for fish of the experimental size (3.11 g of individual initial weight) used in this study and under the prevailing experimental conditions.

Feeding Strategy to Use Beef Tallow and Modify Farmed Tiger Puffer Fatty Acid Composition.

A 12-week feeding experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of replacing fish oil (FO) with beef tallow (BT) on the fatty acid composition of farmed tiger puffer (Takifugu rubripes). Two replacement strategies were used: a standard Graded Dietary Replacement of FO with BT (GDR strategy) and Alternate Feeding between FO- and BT-based Diets (AFD strategy). The positive and negative control diets were formulated with 6% FO (FO-C group) or BT (BT-C group) as the sole added lipid source. In the GDR strategy, three experimental diets were formulated, with 25, 50 and 75% of the added FO in the FO-C diet replaced with BT, named 25BT, 50BT and 75BT, respectively. In the AFD strategy, alternated feeding patterns between the FO-C and BT-C diet-namely, 1, 2 and 3 weeks with BT-C followed by 1 week feeding with FO-C (1BT-1FO, 2BT-1FO and 3BT-1FO, respectively)-were applied. Each diet or feeding strategy was assigned to triplicate tanks. The results showed that dietary BT inclusion reduced the contents of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA) in both the muscle and liver (edible tissues for this species) of the experimental fish, and the liver displayed a more drastic decrease than the muscle. The LC-PUFA content linearly decreased with the decreasing dietary FO levels in the GDR strategy. However, in the AFD strategy, a linear relationship was not observed between the LC-PUFA content and the FO feeding duration. The 3BT-1FO treatment resulted in higher LC-PUFA content than 2BT-1FO. When comparing the two strategies with the same final FO administration level-namely, 50BT vs. 1BT-1FO, and in particular, 75BT vs. 3BT-1FO-the AFD strategy resulted in higher LC-PUFA contents in both the muscle and liver than the GDR strategy. In conclusion, when FO was replaced with BT in the diets, alternate feeding between FO- and BT-based diets resulted in a higher LC-PUFA content than the standard direct replacement. Three weeks of feeding with BT-C followed by one week of feeding with FO-C appeared to be a good alternate feeding pattern. This study provided a promising strategy of FO-sparing in fish farming when the LC-PUFA contents were maintained as high as possible.

Microbial oil, alone or paired with β-glucans, can control hypercholesterolemia in a zebrafish model

Dyslipidemia is often associated with unhealthy dietary habits, and many mammalian studies have explored the mode of action of certain bioactive compounds such as β-glucans and n-3 PUFAs to understand their potential to normalize the lipid metabolism. There are only a few investigations that adopted omic approaches to unveil their combined effect on hypercholesterolemia. Zebrafish (Danio rerio) was used as a model organism to reveal the efficacy of Schizochytrium oil and β-glucans (from Euglena gracilis and Phaeodactylum tricornutum) against cholesterol-rich diet induced dyslipidemia. One of the folowing four diets was fed to a particular group of fish: a control high-cholesterol diet, a Schizochytrium oil diet or one of the two diets containing the oil and β-glucan. The plasma HDL, expression of hepatic genes linked to, among others, ferric ion binding and plasma phosphatidylcholines were higher and plasma cholesterol esters and triacylglycerols were lower in the microbial oil-fed fish compared to the fish fed high cholesterol diet. While the fish fed a mix of microbial oil and Euglena β-glucan had lower plasma triacylglycerols and expression of hepatic genes linked to PPAR signaling pathway and enriched biosynthesis of plasma unsaturated fatty acids, the fish fed microbial oil-Phaeodactylum β-glucan combination had lower abundance of triacylglycerols rich in saturated and mono-unsaturated fatty acids and cholesterol esters in the plasma.

Feeding of fish oil and medium-chain triglycerides to canines impacts circulating structural and energetic lipids, endocannabinoids, and non-lipid metabolite profiles.

The effect of medium-chain fatty acid-containing triglycerides (MCT), long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid-containing triglycerides from fish oil (FO), and their combination (FO+MCT) on the serum metabolome of dogs (Canis familiaris) was evaluated. Dogs (N = 64) were randomized to either a control food, one with 7% MCT, one with FO (0.18% eicosapentaenoate and 1.3% docosahexaenoate), or one with FO+MCT for 28 days following a 14-day washout period on the control food. Serum metabolites were analyzed via chromatography followed by mass spectrometry. Additive effects of serum metabolites were observed for a number of metabolite classes, including fatty acids, phospholipids, acylated amines including endocannabinoids, alpha-oxidized fatty acids, and methyl donors. Some effects of the addition of FO+MCT were different when the oils were combined compared with when each oil was fed separately, namely for acylcarnitines, omega-oxidized dicarboxylic acids, and amino acids. Several potentially beneficial effects on health were observed, including decreased circulating triglycerides and total cholesterol with the addition of FO (with or without MCT) and decreases in N-acyl taurines with the addition of MCT, FO, or FO+MCT. Overall, the results of this study provide a phenotypic characterization of the serum lipidomic response to dietary supplementation of long-chain n3-polyunsaturated and medium-chain saturated fats in canines.

Evaluating the Rumen Degradation of Novel Protected Gelatin Capsules Containing Fish Oil Fed to Lactating Dairy Cows.

The objective of this study was to assess the effects of feeding gelatin capsules containing fish oil, treated with alcoholic solutions of flavoring agents followed by drying, on lactation performance, rumen fatty acids content and milk enrichment of fatty acids. In Trial 1, four multiparous ruminally fistulated Holstein cows were randomly assigned to one of four dietary treatments sequences in a 4 × 4 Latin square design. Treatments consisted of (1) Control with no capsules, (2) Control plus 200 untreated capsules per cow/day, mixed with the TMR, (3) Control plus 200 treated capsules per cow/day placed directly into the rumen, (4) Control plus 200 treated capsules per cow/day, mixed with the TMR. In Trial 2, three fistulated Holstein and three fistulated Jersey multiparous cows were randomly assigned to three dietary treatments sequences in a replicated 3 × 3 Latin square design. Treatments consisted of (1) Control with no capsules fed to the cows, (2) Control plus 180 untreated capsules per cow/day, (3) Control plus 180 treated capsules per cow/day. Compared to control, feeding fish oil capsules significantly (Trial 1) or numerically (Trial 2) reduced milk fat concentration and yield. Furthermore, in both trials, the feeding of untreated or treated capsules had no effect on animal performance or milk composition. In both trials, compared to controls, supplementing the diet with fish oil capsules consistently increased total trans C18:1 isomers and DHA concentration in the rumen and milk fat. However, for both trials, capsule protection treatment had a minimal effect on the concentration of any of the reported rumen and milk fatty acids. When assessed under laboratory control conditions, due to water absorption, the treated capsule weight was increased by 40% while resistance to pressure decreased by 84% after 2 h of incubation in water. The results of this study suggest that due to a reduction in the capsule shell's resistance to abrasion, treated capsules marginally prevented the release of fish oil in the rumen.

Fillet Quality in Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) Raised on Different Dietary Oils Over a Long-Term Feeding Trial

ABSTRACT Effects of dietary fish oil replacement with vegetable oils on physical and sensorial qualities and shelf life of rainbow fillet were investigated. Color did not change in red muscle, while white muscle was redder (a* 0.88) in hazelnut oil-fed fish. Red muscles from fish oil-fed fish had higher lipid peroxidation in all cases, while dietary hazelnut oil decreased lipid peroxidation and increased α-tocopherol content. General acceptance by consumers did not change among treatments. Overall, fish oil replacement did not cause any remarkable inconvenience in sensory attributes, on the contrary, dietary vegetable oils, especially hazelnut oil, increased oxidative stability during storage.

Fish oil supplementation as an omega-3 fatty acid source during gestation: effects on the performance of weaned male goat kids.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of fish oil supplementation, as an omega-3 fatty acids source, to ration of does in the different periods of pregnancy on the fattening performance of kids after weaning. Eighty German Fawn × Hair crossbred does were randomly divided into two groups; half were given fish oil in the first half of pregnancy (FO group), while the other half were given saturated fat (PF (control) group). Then, the goats in the FO and PF groups were randomly divided into two subgroups, and half of the goats were fed fish oil during the second half of pregnancy (FO-FO and FO-PF groups), while the other half was fed saturated fat (PF-FO and PF-PF groups). Thus, study groups of kids were formed according to the nutrition program of the does described above. Forty-seven male kids (84.6 ± 2.44 days old; 14.5 ± 3.09 kg live weight, mean ± standard deviation) were fed for 56 days after weaning, and their weight, feed consumption, serum biochemical parameters, carcass performance, and meat quality characteristics were evaluated. Maternal nutrition significantly affected live weight gain and serum AST, glucose, total protein, and globulin concentrations (P ≤ 0.050). The live weight gain of kids in the PF-PF and PF-FO groups was higher than that in the FO-FO and FO-PF groups. Maternal nutrition tended to affect the hot and cold carcass weights of male kids (P = 0.078 and P = 0.084, respectively). In conclusion, fish oil supplementation during gestation could negatively affect the fattening performance of kids after weaning, especially the daily live weight gain, although it tended to positively affect hot and cold carcass weights.

Protective mechanisms of a microbial oil against hypercholesterolemia: evidence from a zebrafish model.

A Western diet elevates the circulating lipoprotein and triglyceride levels which are the major risk factors in cardiovascular disease (CVD) development. Consumption of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids can stall the disease progression. Although these fatty acids can significantly impact the intestine under a hypercholesterolemic condition, the associated changes have not been studied in detail. Therefore, we investigated the alterations in the intestinal transcriptome along with the deviations in the plasma lipids and liver histomorphology of zebrafish offered DHA- and EPA-rich oil. Fish were allocated to 4 dietary treatments: a control group, a high cholesterol group and microbial oil groups with low (3.3%) and high (6.6%) inclusion levels. We quantified the total cholesterol, lipoprotein and triglyceride levels in the plasma. In addition, we assessed the liver histology, intestinal transcriptome and plasma lipidomic profiles of the study groups. The results suggested that higher levels of dietary microbial oil could control the CVD risk factor indices in zebrafish plasma. Furthermore, microbial oil-fed fish had fewer liver vacuoles and higher mRNA levels of genes involved in β-oxidation and HDL maturation. Analyses of the intestine transcriptome revealed that microbial oil supplementation could influence the expression of genes altered by a hypercholesterolemic diet. The plasma lipidomic profiles revealed that the higher level of microbial oil tested could elevate the long-chain poly-unsaturated fatty acid content of triglyceride species and lower the concentration of several lysophosphatidylcholine and diacylglycerol molecules. Our study provides insights into the effectiveness of microbial oil against dyslipidemia in zebrafish.

Effect of supplementing cellulase, carnitine and lemuru fish oil in feed on chemical composition of Muscovy duck meat

Muscovy duck in Indonesia has good potential to be developed as a meat producer, but currently its production and performance are still relatively low. additional feed is needed to increase it, such as cellulase enzymes, L-carnitine, and lemuru fish oil. where this combination, enzymes can increase nutrient digestibility, fish oil which is rich in unsaturated fatty acids and L-carnitine as a metabolic facilitator needed to oxidize long chain fatty acids. This research was conducted to investigate the effect of supplementing cellulase, carnitine and fish oil in feed on performance, EPA and DHA composition of Muscovy duck meat. In total, 120 Muscovy ducks in grower period were allocated to 4 dietary treatments with 5 replicates of 6 ducks. The treatments consisted of T0 = basal ration, T1 = T0 supplemented with 0.1% cellulase, T2 = T1 supplemented with L-carnitine 40 ppm, and T3 = T2 supplemented with 4% lemuru fish oil. The dietary treatments were fed for 90 days. The results of study showed that the effects of supplementing fish oil and L-carnitine in rations containing cellulase enzyme have a significant value (P<0.01) on the performance (feed consumption, daily body weight gain, feed conversion and IOFC) of male Muscovy duck grower phase and have a significant value (P<0.01) on EPA and DHA level in Muscovy duck meat. The supplementation can decrease feed consumption, meanwhile it increase daily body weight gain, improve feed conversion ratio, increase IOFC value, EPA and DHA level.

Full replacement of fish oil with algae oil in farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) – Debottlenecking omega 3

The global goal of developing sustainable aquafeed has faced increased complexity in sourcing raw materials. The limited availability of fish oil (FO) is a well-known bottleneck for the aquaculture industry and pairing it with EFSA (EFSA CONTAM, 2018) reduced tolerable weekly intake of marine contaminants [polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/F) and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (DLPCB)] creates another challenge for wild caught FO and its use in fish feed. In recent years, commercial algal alternatives have increasingly become available. Not only would omega-3 sources from algae reduce the reliance on FO; it would allow for restoration of the long chain omega-3 levels in farmed salmon. To this end, a study was conducted to establish knowledge on full replacement of FO by algae oil (Schizochytrium sp.) in Atlantic salmon with the aim of reducing contaminants levels in the fillet and maintaining the level of omega-3 fatty acid (FA), growth performance, health, and final product quality. Atlantic salmon (531 g) were distributed into twelve 5 × 5 × 5 m sea cages and fed one of four diets for 369 days: a control diet (Control) containing FO + rapeseed oil (VO1); a diet where AlgaPrime (AP) replaced 50% of the sum of EPA + DHA from FO (50AP + VO1); a diet where AP replaced 100% of the sum of EPA + DHA from FO (100AP + VO1), and a diet the same as the previous but using linseed instead of rapeseed oil (VO2; 100AP + VO2). All diets were balanced for key micronutrients. At the end of the trial, zootechnical parameters were obtained, health and welfare assessed, and final fillet quality analysed for contaminants and fillet quality post slaughter. Full replacement of FO significantly reduced the levels of PCDD/F and DLPCB in the fillet of 4 kg salmon by 70% and 79% respectively for 100AP + VO1 and 40% and 43% respectively for 100AP + VO2 fed fish. Fish gained an average of 3.7 kg across treatments (average final weight 4235.8 g ± 191.8); almost an 8-fold increase for all treatments. No significant differences were found among diets for performance, feed intake, gut health, histology, welfare, pigmentation, or fillet quality. This study demonstrates that AlgaPrime can be used to fully replace FO in Atlantic salmon grower feed without negative effects, achieving an important impact on food safety and sustainability for aquafeed producers and salmon consumers.

Pengaruh Imbangan Minyak Ikan Lemuru dan Minyak Kelapa Sawit terhadap Karkas dan Komposisi Kimia Daging Ayam Broiler

The purpose of this research was to analyze effect of the balancing lemuru fish oil and palm oil on the carcass of broiler and chemical composition of breast of broiler. 200 broilers reared from DOC to 35 days old. Broilers were divided into 4 treatment groups and 5 replications. The treatment consisted of: P0 = diet with 3% crude palm oil, P1 = diet with 1% lemuru fish oil + 2% crude palm oil, P2 = diet with 2% lemuru fish oil + 1% crude palm oil, P3 = diet with 3% lemuru fish oil. Data were analyzed using ANOVA with Duncan's significant difference test. Treatment with lemuru fish oil up to 3% had significant effect (P&lt;0.05) on decreasing carcass but increasing the proportion of thigh. The use of lemuru fish oil feed as much as 2% and palm oil as much as 1% is more effective than control diet on carcass and meat chemistry composition.

Acadesine supplementation in a soybean oil-based diet remodels hepatic lipid and glucose metabolism in juvenile large yellow croaker (Larimichthys crocea)

Dietary high soybean oil (SO) inclusion leads to excessive hepatic lipid accumulation and metabolism disorder in fish species. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of adenosine 5’-monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) pathway activation by acadesine (AICAR) on hepatic histology and metabolism-related gene expression of juvenile large yellow croakers (Larimichthys crocea) fed with SO-based diet. In this study, fish (initial body weight 3.89 ± 0.02 g) were fed fish oil (FO)-based, SO, or SOA (SO diet supplemented with 100 mg kg−1 AICAR) diets with three replicates of each treatment for 70 days. In general, the replacement of dietary FO with SO led to excessive hepatic lipid accumulation and a glucose metabolism disorder. Histological sections and biochemical analysis of hepatic tissue consistently revealed that AICAR supplementation could partly ameliorate SO-induced excessive hepatic lipid accumulation, probably by suppressing the expression of genes related to fatty acid uptake and lipogenesis while enhancing the expression of lipolysis-related genes. Nevertheless, AICAR regulated lipid metabolism in muscle tissue in an inverse pattern to that in hepatic tissue, indicating that muscle tissue could attempt to mitigate lipid accumulation by improving lipolysis in response to the dietary inclusion of SO. Dietary AICAR partly improved glucose metabolism by reducing the expression of genes related to gluconeogenesis in hepatic tissue while increasing the expression of genes related to glucose uptake and glycolysis in muscle tissue. Collectively, dietary AICAR mitigated excessive hepatic lipid accumulation and glucose metabolism disorder. The amelioration of hepatic lipid accumulation by AICAR is likely caused by increasing lipid catabolism and decreasing lipid anabolism. The improved glucose metabolism by AICAR may be ascribed to decreased hepatic gluconeogenesis, as well as increased muscle glucose uptake and utilization.

Dietary Medium-Chain Fatty Acids Raise and (n-3) Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids Lower Hepatic Triacylglycerol Synthesis in Rats

The hypothesis tested was that dietary medium-chain or (n-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids, when compared with (n-6) polyunsaturated fatty acids, alter plasma triacylglycerol levels by affecting hepatic triacylglycerol synthesis as reflected by the activities of acetyl-CoA carboxylase, fatty acid synthase and diacylglycerol acyltransferase in liver. In two separate experiments rats were fed purified diets containing (n-6) polyunsaturated fatty acids in the form of corn oil and either (n-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids in the form of fish oil or medium-chain triacylglycerols (MCT). Consumption of MCT significantly raised plasma triacylglycerol concentrations, whereas fish oil feeding had a lowering effect compared with the corn oil-fed group. In individual rats, the hepatic triacylglycerol concentration was directly correlated with the plasma triacylglycerol concentration (r = 0.60, P < 0.001). The MCT oil diet vs. the corn oil diet markedly raised the activities of hepatic acetyl-CoA carboxylase, fatty acid synthase and diacylglycerol acyltransferase. In the rats fed fish oil, the activities of fatty acid synthase and diacylglycerol acyltransferase were significantly reduced, whereas the activity of acetyl-CoA carboxylase was not affected relative to activities in rats fed corn oil. The activities of the three enzymes were directly correlated with plasma triacylglycerol concentrations in individual rats (r = 0.60–0.75, P < 0.001). The type of fat in the diet probably affects the rate of hepatic triacylglycerol synthesis which is an important determinant of plasma triacylglycerol concentrations.

Fish Oil Enhances Pentachlorobenzene Metabolism and Reduces its Accumulation in Rats

To investigate the influence of dietary fats on the metabolism and excretion of pentachlorobenzene (PECB), rats were fed semipurified diets containing soybean oil, lard or fish oil (10 g/100 g diet) for 2 wk. Rats then received a single dose of PECB by intragastric gavage. Blood concentration of pentachlorophenol (PCP), a major metabolite of PECB, was higher after 5 h through d 3 and that of PECB was lower after d 5 in the rats fed fish oil than in rats fed the other fats. After d 5, the highest ratio of PCP/PECB in the liver was seen in the fish oil—fed rats. Furthermore, fish oil intake resulted in a markedly lower concentration of PECB in fat tissues, where a large amount of PECB is typically distributed due to its lipophilic property. These findings indicate that fish oil feeding enhances PECB metabolism, thereby decreasing PECB residues in the body. Fish oil—fed rats had a smaller epididymal fat tissues mass compared with lard- or soybean oil—fed rats. The small mass of the fat tissues apparently limited the accumulation of PECB in those tissues and thus accelerated PECB metabolism in the liver.
