Unlocking the Power of Inquiry: A Case Study on Elementary Science Professional Development Program

This study examines the awareness of inquiry based teaching amongst elementary science teachers through a workshop intervention, conducted in a private school in Karachi, Pakistan. The case study design deployed, highlighted the learning experiences of 24 participants that took part in the professional development workshop. A qualitative survey was carried before the intervention followed by focus group discussion, document analysis and participant observations during and after the intervention. These methodologies were used to record participants learning experiences and awareness of essential features of inquiry based pedagogy. In addition to this, four primary science teachers were interviewed to examine the adoption of essential features of inquiry in their revised lesson plans. The findings of this study were that before the science training the participants were superficially aware of the fundamentals of inquiry based methods and techniques and knew its importance. However, the in-depth process knowledge and skills/strategies required for an effective inquiry was an identifiable shortcoming. The workshop provided learning opportunities to analyze phenomenon, think scientifically, engage in hands-on science activities. Because of the workshop, the participants demonstrated an improved understanding of what entails an inquiry process and features of scientific inquiry. This research should inspire and inform professional developers about gap in inquiry based science teachings. Furthermore, the study aims to motivate private schools in Pakistan to invest in inquiry based science teaching as a tangible long-term benefit which can translate into better teaching practitioner.

Explanation-Construction in Fourth-Grade Classrooms in Germany and the USA: A cross-national comparative video study

To help explain the differences in students' performance on internationally administered science assessments, cross-national, video-based observational studies have been advocated, but none have yet been conducted at the elementary level for science. The USA and Germany are two countries with large formal education systems whose students underperform those from peers on internationally administered standardized science assessments. However, evidence from the 2011 Trends in International Mathematics and Science Exam assessment suggests fourth-grade students (9–10 year-olds) in the USA perform higher than those in Germany, despite more instructional time devoted to elementary science in Germany. The purpose of this study is to comparatively analyze fourth-grade classroom science in both countries to learn more about how teachers and students engage in scientific inquiry, particularly explanation-construction. Videorecordings of US and German science instruction (n 1 = 42, n 2 = 42) were sampled from existing datasets and analyzed both qualitatively and quantitatively. Despite German science lessons being, on average, twice as long as those in the USA, study findings highlight many similarities between elementary science in terms of scientific practices and features of scientific inquiry. However, they also illustrate crucial differences around the scientific practice of explanation-construction. While students in German classrooms were afforded more substantial opportunities to formulate evidence-based explanations, US classrooms were more strongly characterized by opportunities for students to actively compare and evaluate evidence-based explanations. These factors may begin to help account for observed differences in student achievement and merit further study grounded in international collaboration.

The relationship in biology between the nature of science and scientific inquiry

Informed understandings of nature of science and scientific inquiry are generally accepted goals of biology education. This article points out central features of scientific inquiry with relation to biology and the nature of science in general terms and focuses on the relationship of students’ inquiry skills in biology and their beliefs on the nature of science. The study took place as a part of the German national curriculum project biology in context. IRT modelling of students’ inquiry skills was performed with a sample of 1553 secondary school students. Final analyses on the relation to NOS beliefs were conducted with 218 participants who were in seventh (n = 50), eighth (n = 58) and ninth (n = 110) grades. Students in higher grades showed more advanced inquiry skills in biology and more sophisticated NOS beliefs. Different dimensions of inquiry skills and NOS beliefs correlated positively on a moderate level. Besides science experience and prior achievement, NOS beliefs contributed to the formation of biological inquiry skills. The findings are discussed with respect to implications for teaching and student assessment.

Major Strands in Scientific Inquiry through Cluster Analysis of Research Abstracts

Scientific inquiry involves a variety of abilities scientists use to investigate the natural world. In order to develop students' scientific inquiry, researchers and educators have developed different curricula and a variety of instructional resources, which make features and descriptors of scientific inquiry in teaching and learning even more diverse and complex. For revealing how the multi-facets of scientific inquiry are inherently correlated, this study identified descriptors representing features of scientific inquiry and automatically reviewed the research abstracts where these descriptors were used. A cluster analysis was used to analyze 171 relevant article abstracts published in Web of Science from 1986 to 2010, by using the data mining software WordStat v6.1. Networks of descriptors and of research strands showed the inter-relationships among descriptors and the research strands. Through triangulating the categorization results from automatic data-mining and expert researchers' qualitative reviewing, this study identified seven clusters of high-frequency descriptors and nine major strands of current research studies. The nine strands can further be grouped into five research themes: NOS, Knowledge Construction, Inquiry Ability, Explanatory-driven Inquiry, and Professional Development. With different levels of cohesiveness in network, these themes demonstrated that scientific inquiry was composed of different levels of abilities students need to achieve as well as the endeavors of teachers. Through exploring the network shared among most researchers, this study is expected to provide novice researchers information about elements that expert researchers usually consider and further, it is expected to give expert researchers some new directions to explore in research designs.

과학 교과서 천문 단원의 탐구 활동 분석

본 연구는 초 중 고등학교 과학 교과서의 천문영역에 수록된 탐구활동을 NRC(2000)에서 제시하는 탐구기본요소 5가지와 SAPA에서 제시하는 기초 및 통합적인 탐구과정을 통해 분석하였다. 이를 토대로 과학 교과서의 탐구 활동이 과학교육의 목표인 과학적 소양을 실현하기에 제한점이 있음을 제시하고, 보완적인 방법에 대한 시사점을 제공하고자 하였다. 천문영역을 분석한 결과 초 중 고등학교 대부분의 교과서가 NRC(2000)의 탐구요소 5가지 중 탐구요소 2에 해당하는 증거 수집이 가장 많이 나타난 반면에 탐구요소 1의 문제제기와 탐구요소 5의 발표 및 정당화 부분이 거의 나타나지 않았다. 또한 위의 결과를 바탕으로 구체적인 탐구과정인 SAPA로 분석해 본 결과, 천문영역의 교과서 탐구 활동은 기초탐구과정에는 관찰, 의사사통, 조작, 시공간관계사용 과정 빈도수가 학년에 따라 증가하며, 통합과정에서는 조사, 모델설정, 데이터 해석, 그래프 작성, 실험과정이 늘어나는 경향을 보여주었다. 이에 개정 7차 교육과정에서 제시된 과학적 소양 함양을 위한 교과서에서는 제한적인 탐구활동을 확장하여, 천문영역에서도 전반적이고 다양한 탐구요소 및 탐구과정을 학생들이 경험할 수 있도록 해야 할 것이다. 또한 탐구활동을 가르치는 교사들을 위한 수업모듈뿐만 아니라 이를 사용하는 교사들의 탐구에 대한 이해도 및 교수전략에 있어서도 전문성이 이뤄져야 할 것이다. This study analyzed the inquiry activities appearing in the astronomy sections of elementary, middle and highschool level science textbooks according to the five essential features of inquiry in the classroom as proposed by the National Science Education Standards (NRC, 2000), and SAPA (Science-A Process Approach). On the basis of this analysis, it is clear that the science textbook inquiry activities released the limitation to meet the goal of science education, namely scientific literacy, as it has been laid out by the 7th Science Educational Curriculum. This study revealed that the features of scientific inquiry which are most frequently used in the astronomy sections of science textbooks are 'data collection' and 'form explanation', whereas the features of 'oriented-question', 'evaluate explanations' and 'communicate and justify' rarely appeared. The analysis of inquiry activities by SAPA showed that the basic inquiry skills of 'observing', 'communicating' and 'manipulating materials' were used with increasing frequency according to grade level, and the integrated skills of 'investigating', 'creating models', 'interpreting data' and 'experimenting' were more emphasized in the textbooks. Therefore, it is suggested that students be provided with more opportunities to experience all the features of scientific inquiry and scientific processes as envisioned by the 7th Science Educational Curriculum in order to achieve the stated goal of scientific literacy. Science educators should be required to develop new lesson modules which will allow students to experience authentic scientific inquiry. It is crucial for science teachers to reflect upon and develop their understanding and teaching strategies regarding scientific inquiry through professional development programs in teacher education.

Informal Formative Assessment and Scientific Inquiry: Exploring Teachers' Practices and Student Learning

What does informal formative assessment look like in the context of scientific inquiry teaching? Is it possible to identify different levels of informal assessment practices? Can different levels of informal assessment practices be related to levels of student learning? This study addresses these issues by exploring how 4 middle school science teachers used questions as a method of informal formative assessment, and compares those practices to measures of student learning. The approach to exploring each teacher's questioning practices is based on viewing whole-class discussions as assessment conversations in which the teacher has the opportunity to draw out and act on students' evolving understanding. Assessment conversations are described as consisting of four-step cycles, where the teacher elicits a question, the student responds, the teacher recognizes the student's response, and then uses the information collected to student learning. Our results indicate that the teachers whose enactment of informal formative assessment was more consistent with this model had students with higher performance on embedded assessments. This trend was also reflected in the posttest scores. In addition, we found that teachers focused more on epistemic, rather than conceptual, features of scientific inquiry in their discussions. The study underlines the importance of informal formative assessment during scientific inquiry discussions for teacher training and professional development as a way to increase student learning.

Is science socially constructed—And can it still inform public policy?

This paper addresses, and seeks to correct, some frequent misunderstandings concerning the claim that science is socially constructed. It describes several features of scientific inquiry that have been usefully illuminated by constructivist studies of science, including the mundane or tacit skills involved in research, the social relationships in scientific laboratories, the causes of scientific controversy, and the interconnection of science and culture. Social construction, the paper argues, should be seen not as an alternative to but an enhancement of scientists’ own professional understanding of how science is done. The richer, more finely textured accounts of scientific practice that the constructivist approach provides are potentially of great relevance to public policy.

Scientific Knowledge as Rules that Guide Behavior

This paper discusses the proposal that scientific knowledge consists of rules that guide investigative behavior. It does so in order to clarify one aspect of the interpretation of scientific knowledge offered by radical behaviorism. The paper begins by explaining that in this account, rules are discriminative stimuli which specify or imply contingencies or if-then relations between behavior and its results. A discussion about contingencies follows, and the centrality of contingencies in human conduct is asserted. The paper then discusses the connection between rules and knowledge and, later, outlines the concept of scientific knowledge as rules of a particular kind. An important part of this latter concept is its compatibility with much written elsewhere about the nature of science. The paper points out this connection by discussing several features of scientific inquiry.
