European Serin (Serinus serinus) expands nesting area to south and east

Abstract In the context of anthropogenic and climatic changes in the faunas of numerous regions, species that were previously absent from there are now observed, accompanied by alterations in the number of animal populations and disruption of the usual trends of their dynamics. The changes in the range of the European Serin (Serinus serinus) within Ukraine were identified by creating a four-layer GIS map in the DIVA-GIS software. The analysis revealed that European Serin continues to disperse in Europe, with a notable shift towards the south and east. The current southern border of the breeding range of the species passes through Central Ukraine, encompassing the right bank of the Dnipro river. However, the status of European Serin in the Black Sea region remains unclear. In the territories inhabited in the 20th century, the density of European Serin in the breeding season has increased, although decreasing population size is described for old populations of Europe. It is relevant to study the comparative dynamics of bird numbers in old habitats and in newly developed areas, with a view to identifying new wintering grounds for birds and populations that have shifted to a sedentary lifestyle.

Regional Coleoptera Fauna: Applying Different Methods to Study Species Diversity in a Single Region

In order to study regional faunas, one or two methods of studying Coleoptera are often used. However, a comparison of several ways of studying shows that it is more expedient to use more than one of them. Six different methods of catching Coleoptera used in studies of the biodiversity of regional faunas were compared. This research employed pitfall traps (PfT), beer traps (BT), freely hanging flight intercept traps or window traps (FWT), Malaise traps (MT), pan traps (PT), and sweep net (SN). The goal was to assess the effectiveness of these methods in evaluating the biodiversity of this insect group. Studies were conducted from 2011 to 2017 and 2019 to 2023 in the Ryazan region (the central part of European Russia). A total of 27,892 specimens of Coleoptera (927 species from 64 families) were collected. Specifically, 17,659 specimens were collected using PfT (396 species from 36 families), 4971 specimens using BT (146 species from 30 families), 1014 specimens using FWT (221 species from 51 families), 109 specimens using MT (43 species from 16 families), 2220 specimens using PT (357 species from 42 families), and 1919 specimens using SN (265 species from 32 families). The maximum number of families was observed with FWT, while the minimum number of families was registered with MT. Interestingly, the highest number of rare species from both protected lists was obtained using BT and PfT. The Margalef index was higher for Coleoptera collections using PT and PfT, while the largest Shannon index values were recorded for samples using SN and PT. The Berger–Parker index was the highest for catches using BT, which was characterized by the highest dominance of one or more species. In our study, four species of Coleoptera were found that are included in the protected lists of the Russian Federation and 14 species of Coleoptera were listed in the protected species of the Ryazan region. Considering the results of this study, the Coleoptera fauna of the Ryazan region currently accounts for 1674 species.

Three new species of Ophiotaenia La Rue, 1911 (Cestoda: Proteocephalidae) from dipsadine snakes (Squamata: Colubridae) in Ecuador.

The parasite fauna of Neotropical reptiles is poorly known, and the number of parasites described in these hosts does not seem to correspond to the actual species diversity in this zoogeographical region. This also applies to tapeworms such as proteocephalids, which are rarely found in reptiles and are strictly specific to their reptilian hosts. In the present paper, three new species of Ophiotaenia La Rue, 1911 are described from three dipsadine snake species (Squamata: Colubridae) in Ecuador, namely O. jeanmarctouzeti sp. n. from the Neotropical blunt-headed treesnake Imantodes cenchoa (Linnaeus), O. barraganae sp. n. from the beautiful calico snake Oxyrhopus formosus (Wied-Neuwied) and O. velascoae sp. n. from the forest flame snake Oxyrhopus petolarius (Linnaeus). The new species are characterised by type 1 uterine development, the number and distribution of testes, the size of the scolex and other metric features. As no molecular data are available on the specimens collected more than 35 years ago, the phylogenetic relationships of the individual taxa are not known.

A revision and addition to Zopheridae (Coleoptera: Tenebrionoidea) in Baltic amber: possible connections between modern Holarctic distributions and Eocene 'amber forests'.

One new extinct genus and six new extinct species of Zopheridae are described and illustrated from Eocene Baltic amber: Usechus andrushchenkoi Alekseev et Bukejs sp. nov., Coxelus carstengroehni Alekseev et Bukejs sp. nov., Paha vanivanitatum Alekseev et Bukejs sp. nov., Lasconotus tenebrisilvarum Alekseev et Bukejs sp. nov., Helioctamenus groehni Alekseev et Bukejs sp. nov., and Thanatoplagia tamutisi Alekseev et Bukejs gen. et sp. nov. These described taxa include the first fossil representatives of five extant genera and two extant tribes of the family Zopheridae. The assumed paleoecology of these taxa within the amber-producing forest paleohabitat, as well as zoogeography of new fossils are discussed. In addition, new fossil records of Xylolaemus legalovi Alekseev et Bukejs, 2016, X. richardklebsi Alekseev et Bukejs, 2016, Endophloeus gorskii Alekseev et Bukejs, 2016, Yantaroxenos colydioides Nabozhenko, Kirejtshuk et Merkl, 2016, and Zopheromimus auriborussiensis Alekseev et Nabozhenko, 2023 from Baltic amber are presented. A catalogue of Zopheridae described from Baltic amber (currently 19 species within 16 genera) is compiled herein, and an identification key for all taxa is provided. The zoogeographical affinities of the Baltic amber zopherid assemblage are assessed. The present-day disjunct distributions of the zopherid genera that have survived since the Eocene and are currently present in the Holarctic region probably resulted from a uniform fauna in the warm temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere in the first half of the Paleogene. This uniform fauna was followed by independent reduction of distributions within four regions (West Palearctic, East Palearctic, West Nearctic, and East Nearctic). The 'circum-Arctic quadrants' schema is proposed for visualisation of this hypothesis. Additionally, a zonal middle to late Eocene 'amberiferous ring' is hypothesized as a probable migration pathway for several zopherids in this part of the Eocene. This 'ring' is a belt of amber-producing forests in the Northern Hemisphere, with the potential to preserve a wider distribution of taxa that relied on mixed conifer-fagacean forests similar to the Baltic amber forest flora and its faunal assemblage.

Myrmozercon mites are highly host specific: two new species of Myrmozercon Berlese associated with sympatric Camponotus ants in southern Quintana Roo, Mexico.

Two new species of Myrmozercon, M. serratus sp. nov. and M. spatulatus sp. nov., are described based on adults and deutonymphs collected in association with ants in Mexico. They represent the first records of this genus from the Neotropic s.s. faunal region. Both new species are associated with hosts in the genus Camponotus from the same small area of a coastal lagoon, which share the same nesting habit preferences, providing strong evidence for host specificity. All but one colony of C. atriceps hosted mites, whereas they occurred in only half of the colonies of C. rectangularis. There was a significant positive correlation between the abundance of C. atriceps sexual ants and the abundance of mites. We summarize the known host associations for the genus Myrmozercon and discuss host specificity. Larvae of both mite species were collected on the wings of males and gynes suggesting that egg laying occurs on the hosts reproductive caste. Two hypotheses explaining this observation are discussed, larvae may be phoretic on winged sexuals, favoring mite co-dispersal with hosts, or larvae reside on the alates as a refuge from predation.

Patterns of Zoological Diversity in Iran—A Review

Iran is a country characterized by high biodiversity and complex biogeographic patterns. Its diverse landscape and steep climatic gradients have resulted in significant faunal diversity and high level of endemism. To better understand these patterns, we investigated the historical environmental drivers that have shaped Iran’s current geological and climatological conditions, and, consequently, have shaped the current zoological distribution patterns. Furthermore, we provide an overview of the country’s zoological diversity and zoogeography by reviewing published studies on its fauna. We analyzed nearly all available catalogs, updated checklists, and relevant publications, and synthesized them to present a comprehensive overview of Iran’s biodiversity. Our review reports approximately 37,500 animal species for Iran. We also demonstrated that the country serves as a biogeographic transition zone among three zoogeographical realms: the Palearctic, Oriental, and Saharo-Arabian, where distinct faunal elements intersect. This biogeographic complexity has made it challenging to delineate clear zoogeographical zones, leading to varying classifications depending on the taxon. The uplift of mountain ranges, in particular, has played a crucial role in shaping faunal diversity by serving as barriers, corridors, and glacial refugia. These mountains are largely the result of orogeny and plate collisions during the Mesozoic and Cenozoic eras, coupled with the development of the Tethyan Sea and the uplift of several ranges during the Miocene. Despite these insights, our understanding of biodiversity distribution in Iran remains incomplete, even for some well-studied taxa, such as certain vertebrate families and arthropods. We highlight the existing gaps in knowledge regarding zoogeographical patterns and propose approaches to address these gaps, particularly concerning less-studied species and the highly diverse group of insects.

Conservation ecology of land snails: a synthesis for Estonia

ABSTRACT We provide a synthesis of how the regional fauna of land snails, a flagship group among invertebrates, is distributed across ecosystems and how that translates to conservation priorities in Estonia. The data were compiled from 24 assemblage studies (mostly sample quadrats or substrate volume sampling; totalling >80,000 individuals) and from species records of infrequent species in the country since the 1970s. These data were quantitatively analysed for snail diversity and species frequencies by ecosystem types, and for the conservation status and indicator value of species. The known Estonian extant fauna contains 80 native and 12 presumably non-native species, of which 11 native species were assessed as threatened (2 not found in the 21st century). Hydrologically functional fens, old eutrophic forests, wooded meadows and calcareous areas appeared hotspots for threatened species and for overall snail diversity and abundance. As conservation measures, strict protection of natural forests and fens is fundamental, whereas the consequences of ecological restoration of alvars and fens require further study. Invasion of non-native species has greatly accelerated in the last 15 years, but it still mostly affects human settlements and their surroundings. We conclude that the Estonian land snail fauna is in a vulnerable state that largely depends on the integrity of hotspot ecosystems. There is a critical lack of knowledge on the value of small habitat patches and ecological restoration, and ecological responses to the snail invasions.

Investigation of the distribution patterns in moinids (Crustacea: Cladocera: Moinidae) forming ephippia with two resting eggs.

During last two decades, morphological and genetic studies of the microcrustaceans from the family Moinidae Goulden, 1968 (Crustacea: Branchiopoda: Cladocera) were intensified. However, species diversity within this family remains underestimated. It refers to both subtropical and tropical areas of different continents that have traditionally been less studied compared with Central Europe and some other Palaearctic regions. In addition to this, only a restricted set of morphological characteristics is used for the discrimination of species within the genus Moina Baird, 1850. Most common moinid taxa are considered species complexes rather than single species, making any biogeographic reconstruction difficult. Here, we present an investigation of distribution patterns in moinids that form ephippia with two resting eggs based on both a reexamination of data from the literature and from specimens in museum and personal collections. Also, we redescribed morphology of poorly known taxa from the arid regions of the Old World-Moina belli Gurney, 1904 and M. kaszabi Forró, 1988 and clarify their diagnostic morphological characters and distributional ranges. We found that M. belli and M. kaszabi are morphologically very similar. In both species, setae 1 and 2 of thoracic limb I are armed bilaterally by fine, densely located short setulae. Reliable differences between M. belli and M. kaszabi concern armature of the valve posteroventral portion. Among the moinids with two resting eggs in the ephippium, M. belli and M. kaszabi are morphologically closer to M. macrocopa (Straus, 1820) and M. americana Goulden, 1968. All these species have: (1) a dorsal head pore; (2) fine long hairs on head, valve and preanal margin of postabdomen; (3) thoracic limb I of male with a long exopodite. In general, an investigated group of moinids includes both species with relatively compact and very broad distributional ranges. We concluded that maximum diversity of the moinids forming ephippia with two resting eggs is characteristic of southern portions of Palaearctic and Nearctic zoogeographical regions and approximately corresponds to subtropical climate zone. We need to underline that M. macrocopa and M. americana have a great invasive potential. Both species were anthropogenically introduced in South America and have been successfully naturalized there. Their distribution in tropical regions of the Old World and Australia requires new precise investigations. A group of moinids forming ephippia with two resting eggs can be considered as a convenient model for biogeographical reconstructions, including studies on changes in aquatic ecosystems due to global climate warming, eutrophication and the introduction of non-native species. There is no doubt that subsequent joint application of morphological and genetic data will shed more light on the global phylogeographic structure of the entire family Moinidae.

First record of the family Callianopsidae (Decapoda: Axiidea) and a new species of Vulcanocalliax from the Hikurangi Margin off Aotearoa New Zealand, with a key to species of Callianopsidae

IntroductionThe Aotearoa New Zealand ghost shrimp of the infraorders Axiidea and Gebiidea have never been comprehensively reviewed, with recent work uncovering a diverse regional fauna representing eight of the 14 known families.MethodsUsing standard morphological and DNA sequencing tools, the family Callianopsidae is, for the first time, recorded off New Zealand, represented by a new species of Vulcanocalliax.ResultsThe new species was found near hydrocarbon seeps on the Hikurangi Margin, on the eastern New Zealand continental slope, and is only the second species now known in this genus. The single congener, V. arutyunovi, is only known from a mud volcano in the Gulf of Cádiz, off the Iberian Peninsula. Vulcanocalliax sp. nov. was formerly reported as an unnamed host of a new endemic New Zealand rhizocephalan barnacle Parthenopea australis and is here formally described as Vulcanocalliax beervana sp. nov.DiscussionThe new species differs, e.g., in the shape of the anterior carapace margin (convexly rounded and without elevated postantennal shoulder present in V. arutyunovi), the ocular peduncle having a convex anterolateral margin (compared to a straight margin), and the uropodal exopod has a dorsomedian ridge, lacking the elevated anterior portion that is distinct in V. arutyunovi. Checklist and distribution of the groundwater crustacean fauna from Sicily, Italy

Owing to the “Racovitzan impediment”, the groundwater fauna of most biogeographical regions is currently inadequately known, thus hampering our understanding of subterranean biodiversity and its protection. Based on an extensive bibliographical review accompanied by fieldwork to localize occurrence sites, a checklist of crustacean taxa reported to date from Sicilian groundwater is provided, and their distribution is described. Among the 63 taxa recorded to date, 43 belong to the class Copepoda (orders Cyclopoida and Harpacticoida), 15 to the class Malacostraca (orders Amphipoda, Bathynellacea, Isopoda, and Thermosbaenacea), and 5 to the class Ostracoda (order Podocopida). Conversely, to date, no representatives of the copepod order Calanoida nor species of the class Branchiopoda have been recorded from groundwater habitats on the island. Several taxa require accurate taxonomic revision or are yet to be formally described and are thus at present left in open nomenclature. Finally, the date of publication of several copepod and amphipod taxa is amended. A high incidence of stygobites (i.e., obligate groundwater dwellers) has been observed in malacostracans, whereas nearly half of the recorded copepods were non-stygobites. This pattern is mirrored by the incidence of endemic species, which is higher in malacostracans than in copepods. The only non-stygobitic crustacean species endemic to Sicily observed in the frame of present review is the asellid isopod Proasellus montalentii. The paucity of information currently available on the Sicilian groundwater ostracods prevents us from drawing conclusions regarding this crustacean group. The origin and composition of Sicilian groundwater crustacean fauna can be explained by considering three major faunal assemblages: the presence of ancient paleoendemic taxa, likely of Miocene origin, the colonization of the groundwater of the island during late Pliocene and Pleistocene land connections with peninsular Italy, and the direct colonization of these environments from the sea; no species of African origin have been discovered to date. Based on currently available data, the groundwater of southeastern Sicily hosts the highest species richness and some of the most biogeographically interesting taxa. Unfortunately, a progressive lowering and salinization of the local aquifers possibly due to climate change and its overexploitation threats this fauna, and several taxa are disappearing even before their discovery and description.

Diversity and Interactions between Picobiine Mites and Starlings.

The subfamily Picobiinae (Acariformes: Syringophilidae) comprises obligate and permanent parasites of birds found exclusively in the quills of contour feathers. We studied associations of picobiine mites with birds of the family Sturnidae (Aves: Passeriformes) across the Palaearctic, Afrotropical, Oriental, and Oceanian zoogeographical regions. Among the 414 examined bird individuals belonging to 44 species (35.2% of all sturnids), 103 individuals from 24 species (54.5% of examined species) were parasitised by quill mites. The diversity of mites was represented by five species, including one newly described, Picobia malayi Patan and Skoracki sp. n. Statistical analysis of the Picobiinae-Sturnidae bipartite network demonstrated a low connectance value (Con = 0.20) and high modularity, with significant differences in the H2' specialisation index compared to null model values. The network structure, characterised by four distinct modules, highlighted the specificity and limited host range of the Picobiinae-Sturnidae associations. The distribution of Picobia species among starlings was congruent with the phylogeny of their hosts, with different mites parasitising specific clades of starlings. Additionally, the findings suggest that the social and breeding behaviours of starlings influence quite a high prevalence. Finally, our studies support the validity of museum collections to study these parasitic interactions.

The spread and fauna of orthopterans (Insecta: Orthoptera) in Namangan Region, Uzbekistan

Abstract. Nurjanov AA, Medetov MJ, Begjanov MQ, Kholmatov BR, Khalillayev SA, Gapparov FA, Nurjonov FA, Tufliyev NK, Radjafov MY. 2024. The spread and fauna of orthopterans (Insecta: Orthoptera) in Namangan Region, Uzbekistan. Biodiversitas 25: 2619-2628. The Namangan Region, which makes up one-third of the Fergana Valley, is separated from other regions of Uzbekistan by the Kurama and Chatkal mountain ranges. Because of this, the region's fauna differs from the central, northern, and southern areas. During the research (2018-2023), data on the biological diversity, features of inter-landscape distribution, density, and number of orthopterans identified from natural and agrolandscapes of Namangan Region has been analyzed. Samples were collected from 48 coordinates. The results recorded 65 species and subspecies belonging to 8 families, 12 subfamilies, and 46 genera. Furthermore, 38 species (59.4%) of orthopterans found in the territories of Namangan Region are distributed in different agro landscapes, 29 species (45.3%) in hills, and 44 species (68.7%) in mountains. Based on a comparison of species diversity between landscapes using the Jaccard method, it was discovered that there was a 70% difference between species of agrolandscapes (wheat and cotton field) and mountain, a 65% difference between species of mountain and hills, and a 64% difference between species of hills and agrocenosis. In the analysis of species distribution based on density, the following species ranges were found to exist: 8 species are classified as extremely rare, 38 species are classified as constantly distributed, 16 species are classified as common, and 3 species are classified as swarming species. Based on the information obtained from the experiments, it is recommended to add the extremely rare species to the list of unique species and to carry out the control measures against swarming species.

Patterns of Species Richness and Its Endemism of Beetles in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei Region of China

The Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region lies between the Mongolia-Xinjiang Zoogeographic Region and the Central China Zoogeographic Region in China, harboring relatively rich biodiversity. This study specifically examined the species diversity, richness and endemic areas of beetles in this area. By analyzing 5965 detailed distribution records of 2047 beetle species in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region, the species richness maps were created with a grid size of 0.5°. Additionally, two methods, parsimony analysis of endemism (PAE) and endemicity analysis (EA) were applied to detect areas of endemism (AOEs) with different grid sizes (0.1°, 0.25° and 0.5°), resulting in the identification of three AOEs in the southern mountainous areas of the Taihang Mountains, Yanshan Mountains, and Xiaowutai Mountains. It also verified that AOEs are consistent with the hypothesis that endemic areas are predominantly located in mountain ranges, as proposed by previous related studies. These findings highlight the importance of complex topography and stable climate in shaping AOEs and conserving biodiversity.

Checklist of marine Bivalvia (Mollusca) from Brazil, with descriptive analyses of their bathymetric and geographical distribution.

After revising the literature and consulting the pertinent virtual databases, we here list all Brazilian marine bivalves currently considered as valid and include data on their geographical and bathymetrical distribution. The list contains 516 indigenous and nine introduced species. Among the former, 461 species are autobranchs and 64 are protobranchs. They belong to 42 superfamilies, nine of them containing at least 20 species each; there are 77 families, twelve of which contain at least 15 species; most of these more speciose groups are typical from shallow waters (e.g., Tellinoidea and Veneroidea) and/or have been reviewed taxonomically (Nuculanoidea and Cuspidarioidea). There are 368 species which live exclusively on the continental shelf, 86 are only known from deep water and 68 species have a wide bathymetric distribution. More than half of the 368 continental-shelf species have a wide geographic distribution; 40 species are exclusive to the Brazilian province, the others also occur in the Caribbean and/or Argentine shelf waters; those from the Caribbean need more investigation. Important knowledge gaps remain for Brazilian Galeommatoidea and Nuculoidea, deep-sea species of Mytilidae, Teredinidae, and Arcidae; the Poromyidae, Limopsidae, Propeamussiidae, and Thyasiridae appear to be underrepresented. Compared to 29 world regional faunas of marine bivalves, the Brazilian diversity ranks in the ninth position.

A Chromosome-Level Genome Assembly and Annotation for the Oecanthus rufescens (Orthoptera: Oecanthidae).

Oecanthus is a genus of cricket known for its distinctive chirping and distributed across major zoogeographical regions worldwide. This study focuses on Oecanthus rufescens, and conducts a comprehensive examination of its genome through genome sequencing technologies and bioinformatic analysis. A high-quality chromosome-level genome of O. rufescens was successfully obtained, revealing significant features of its genome structure. The genome size is 877.9 Mb, comprising ten pseudo-chromosomes and 70 other sequences, with a GC content of 41.38% and an N50 value of 157,110,771 bp, indicating a high level of continuity. BUSCO assessment results demonstrate that the genome's integrity and quality are high (of which 96.8% are single-copy and 1.6% are duplicated). Comprehensive genome annotation was also performed, identifying approximately 310 Mb of repetitive sequences, accounting for 35.3% of the total genome sequence, and discovering 15,481 tRNA genes, 4,082 rRNA genes, and 1,212 other noncoding genes. Furthermore, 15,031 protein-coding genes were identified, with BUSCO assessment results showing that 98.4% (of which 96.3% are single-copy and 1.6% are duplicated) of the genes were annotated.

Recircumscription of the genera Goniozus and Sierola (Hymenoptera: Bethylidae) based on morphological and molecular evidence.

A number of undescribed species of the bethylid genera Goniozus and Sierola have been discovered in Australia and North America with character states that had previously been thought to be exclusive to one or the other, prompting a re-examination of the generic boundaries. Analysis of a large dataset of cytochrome oxidase I mtDNA sequences and key morphological characters found that Goniozus is well defined by two insertion-deletion events in COI. The traditional morphological characters can also be used to separate the genera, but variation within the regional fauna must be taken into account. Sierola always has four maxillary palpomeres; Goniozus usually has five, but some Nearctic species have four. Goniozus always has cell 2R1 of the fore wing open, with vein Rs weakly curved; Sierola has Rs bent sharply towards the wing margin, usually closing 2R1, but a small number of recently-described Hawaiian species and many undescribed Australian species and have it narrowly to moderately open. As a result of these changes, two species are transferred from Goniozus to Sierola: Sierola angulata (Muesebeck, 1933) comb. nov. from Australia, and Sierola jamiei (Ward, 2013) comb. nov. from New Zealand.

Filling the gaps: surveys in extreme habitats within an underexplored territory rapidly increase the knowledge on the distribution of nocturnal Lepidoptera in South Italy

The availability of data regarding local and regional biodiversity inventories are gaining an increasing importance because of the lack of basic knowledge makes difficult to study ecological dynamics promoted by environmental and climatic changes. In this paper we demonstrate that to prioritize the exploration of extreme habitats within underexplored territories accelerate the filling of faunistic gaps. We investigated the fauna of Lepidoptera of two areas in southern Italy characterized by extreme habitats: the Calanchi del Marchesato and the mouth of the Neto River, both located in the Calabria region, Crotone province, a territory with scarce and occasional faunistic investigations. After only one year of monthly surveys, we found 22 species of biogeographical interest at both national and regional levels. Eupithecia lentiscata was discovered in the Italian peninsula for the first time, previously recorded only in Sardinia so far, and E. phoeniceata was found for the first time in southern part of continental territory, being known in Italy only for Tuscany, Umbria, Latium, Abruzzo, and Sicily. Seven more species are new for the regional fauna. Furthermore, we also found seven abundant populations of usually rare species, and six more species were confirmed as rare at regional level. For any of these species we provided a measure of filled gaps. These results, also improved the knowledge concerning two Natura 2000 sites, providing insights on their management. To maximise results minimising field efforts and costs, it is very important to carefully select the study areas.

Potential historically intertropical stable areas during the Late Quaternary of South America

AbstractSouth America is a pivotal paleontological setting for Late Quaternary megafaunal research. Nonetheless, its paleobiogeography and paleoecology, and the causes for the recent extinction of megafauna in the Late Pleistocene/Early Holocene are not yet fully understood. This study aimed to investigate the potential geographical distribution and historically intertropical stable areas (HISAs) of South American megafauna. We generated maps using Paleo‐Species Distribution Models for 12 megafaunal taxa (11 herbivores and one carnivore) during interglacial and glacial periods in the Late Quaternary: 120 and 21 ka. Our models, together with isotopic data, show that the HSIAs occurred mainly in low‐altitude plains (<1000 m) and were superimposed on seasonal dry forest biomes. We propose the occurrence of two HSIAs: the West Intertropical Region and the Brazilian Intertropical Region, the latter being redefined. We suggest that the Brazilian Intertropical Region is much smaller than previously proposed, but was still a key zoogeographical region for megafauna in South America during the Late Pleistocene.

Zoogeographical regions in the Atlantic Forest: patterns and potential drivers

AbstractAimTo delineate present‐day zoogeographical regions of terrestrial vertebrates (frogs, lizards, snakes, birds and non‐volant mammals) in the Atlantic Forest. Within each taxonomic group, we examine the relative importance of abrupt climatic transitions, orographic barriers, past climate change and rivers in shaping zoogeographical boundaries.LocationSouth America's Atlantic Forest.MethodsWe applied a network‐based method to delineate zoogeographical regions, using distribution data (range maps) for 455 species of frogs, 103 lizards, 220 snakes, 917 birds and 202 non‐volant mammals, in 50 × 50 km grid cells. We used hierarchical generalized linear mixed‐effects models to test environmental predictors associated with zoogeographical boundaries. Finally, we intersected the bioregion maps delineated for each group to identify general patterns across all vertebrates.ResultsWe identified four zoogeographical regions for birds and snakes, and five for frogs, lizards and non‐volant mammals. Depending on the group, contemporary and past climate conditions, elevation variation and/or rivers were associated with zoogeographical boundaries. The combined maps indicate that the Atlantic Forest retains four spatially cohesive zoogeographical regions based on present‐day distribution of vertebrates.Main conclusionsCross‐taxon congruence indicates that the geographical and environmental characteristics of the Atlantic Forest have a strong influence on the location of zoogeographical regions for vertebrates. In contrast, transition zones appear to be associated with the spatial distribution of life history traits of each group, potentially explaining the observed differences in the number of bioregions across groups and the position of zoogeographical boundaries. This work paves the way for further research into the evolutionary assembly of the Atlantic Forest's zoogeographical regions and may help inform conservation priorities for maintaining their distinctive faunas.

Faunistic contributions and zoogeographical and ecological evaluations on species belonging to the genus Philonthus Stephens, 1829 (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Staphylininae: Staphylinini: Philonthiina) from the Aegean Region (Türkiye)

Philonthus Stephens, 1829 is the most speciose genus of the tribe Staphylini in the world. In this present study, faunistic contributions to the Philonthus fauna of Türkiye were made along with additional records. A total of 30 species were recorded from the examined material which was composed of specimens collected from the Aegean Region between 2019-2022. Among them, 13 species are new records for the region and new province records for 15 species are also provided. Additionally, first detailed locality records are provided for the widely distributed Philonthus viridipennis Fauvel, 1875. Besides several ecological properties, general distribution of species in Türkiye and other zoogeographical regions are presented and discussed. Previous records from the study region are given and evaluated with our results, zoogeographic status of species is discussed. As a result of the study, composition of the collected species represent regional characters, as they mostly belong to the European and Asian fauna.
