Fault-Tolerant Code-Switching Protocols for Near-Term Quantum Processors

Topological color codes are widely acknowledged as promising candidates for fault-tolerant quantum computing. Neither a two-dimensional nor a three-dimensional topology, however, can provide a universal gate set {, , }, with the gate missing in the two-dimensional and the gate in the three-dimensional case. These complementary shortcomings of the isolated topologies may be overcome in a combined approach, by switching between a two- and a three-dimensional code while maintaining the logical state. In this work, we construct resource-optimized deterministic and nondeterministic code-switching protocols for two- and three-dimensional distance-three color codes using fault-tolerant quantum circuits based on flag qubits. Deterministic protocols allow for the fault-tolerant implementation of logical gates on an encoded quantum state, while nondeterministic protocols may be used for the fault-tolerant preparation of magic states. Taking the error rates of state-of-the-art trapped-ion quantum processors as a reference, we find a logical failure probability of 3% for deterministic logical gates, which cannot be realized transversally in the respective code. By replacing the three-dimensional distance-three color code in the protocol for magic state preparation with the morphed code introduced in Vasmer and Kubica [PRX Quantum 3, 030319 (2022)], we reduce the logical failure rates by 2 orders of magnitude, thus rendering it a viable method for magic state preparation on near-term quantum processors. Our results demonstrate that code switching enables the fault-tolerant and deterministic implementation of a universal gate set under realistic conditions, and thereby provide a practical avenue to advance universal, fault-tolerant quantum computing and enable quantum algorithms on first, error-corrected logical qubits. Reducing the Runtime of Fault-Tolerant Quantum Simulations in Chemistry through Symmetry-Compressed Double Factorization.

Quantum phase estimation based on qubitization is the state-of-the-art fault-tolerant quantum algorithm for computing ground-state energies in chemical applications. In this context, the 1-norm of the Hamiltonian plays a fundamental role in determining the total number of required iterations and also the overall computational cost. In this work, we introduce the symmetry-compressed double factorization (SCDF) approach, which combines a CDF of the Hamiltonian with the symmetry shift technique, significantly reducing the 1-norm value. The effectiveness of this approach is demonstrated numerically by considering various benchmark systems, including the FeMoco molecule, cytochrome P450, and hydrogen chains of different sizes. To compare the efficiency of SCDF to other methods in absolute terms, we estimate Toffoli gate requirements, which dominate the execution time on fault-tolerant quantum computers. For the systems considered here, SCDF leads to a sizable reduction of the Toffoli gate count in comparison to other variants of DF or even tensor hypercontraction, which is usually regarded as the most efficient approach for qubitization.

Catalyst-free MBE growth of PbSnTe nanowires with tunable aspect ratio

Topological crystalline insulators (TCIs) are interesting for their topological surface states, which hold great promise for scattering-free transport channels and fault-tolerant quantum computing. A promising TCI is SnTe. However, Sn-vacancies form in SnTe, causing a high hole density, hindering topological transport from the surface being measured. This issue could be relieved by using nanowires with a high surface-to-volume ratio. Furthermore, SnTe can be alloyed with Pb reducing the Sn-vacancies while maintaining its topological phase. Here we present the catalyst-free growth of monocrystalline PbSnTe in molecular beam epitaxy. By the addition of a pre-deposition stage before the growth, we have control over the nucleation phase and thereby increase the nanowire yield. This facilitates tuning the nanowire aspect ratio by a factor of four by varying the growth parameters. These results allow us to grow specific morphologies for future transport experiments to probe the topological surface states in a Pb1–x Sn x Te-based platform.

Magic of quantum hypergraph states

Magic, or nonstabilizerness, characterizes the deviation of a quantum state from the set of stabilizer states, playing a fundamental role in quantum state complexity and universal fault-tolerant quantum computing. However, analytical and numerical characterizations of magic are very challenging, especially for multi-qubit systems, even with a moderate qubit number. Here, we systemically and analytically investigate the magic resource of archetypal multipartite quantum states—quantum hypergraph states, which can be generated by multi-qubit controlled-phase gates encoded by hypergraphs. We first derive the magic formula in terms of the stabilizer Rényi-α entropies for general quantum hypergraph states. If the average degree of the corresponding hypergraph is constant, we show that magic cannot reach the maximal value, i.e., the number of qubits n. Then, we investigate the statistical behaviors of random hypergraph states' magic and prove a concentration result, indicating that random hypergraph states typically reach the maximum magic. This also suggests an efficient way to generate maximal magic states with random diagonal circuits. Finally, we study hypergraph states with permutation symmetry, such as 3-complete hypergraph states, where any three vertices are connected by a hyperedge. Counterintuitively, such states can only possess constant or even exponentially small magic for α≥2. Our study advances the understanding of multipartite quantum magic and could lead to applications in quantum computing and quantum many-body physics.

Pressure-Dependent Superconductivity in Topological Dirac Semimetal SrCuBi.

The discovery of superconducting states in diverse topological materials generated a burgeoning interest to explore a topological superconductor and to realize a fault-tolerant topological quantum computation. A variety of routes to realize topological superconductors have been proposed and many types of topological materials have been developed. However, a pristine topological material with a natural superconducting state is relatively rare as compared to topological materials with artificially induced superconductivity. Here, we report that the planar honeycomb structured three-dimensional (3D) topological Dirac semimetal (TDS) SrCuBi, which is the Zintl phase, shows a natural surface superconductivity at 2.1 K under ambient pressure. It is clearly identified from theoretical calculations that a topologically non-trivial state exists on the (100) surface. Further, its superconducting transition temperature (Tc) increases by applying pressure, exhibiting a maximal Tc of 4.8 K under 6.2GPa. We believe that this discovery opens up a new possibility of exploring exotic Majorana fermions at the surface of 3D TDS superconductors. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Nontrivial evolution and geometric phase for an orbital angular momentum qutrit

Photonic orbital angular momentum (OAM) offers a promising platform for high-dimensional quantum information processing. While geometric phase (GP) is the crucial tool in enabling intrinsically fault-tolerant quantum computation, the measurement of GP using linear optics remains relatively unexplored in the OAM state space. Here, we propose an experimental scheme to detect GP shifts resulting from the cyclic evolution of OAM qutrit states. Distinguished with the conventional evolution along cyclic path on the Poincaré sphere (PS), the nontrivial evolution in our theoretical scheme is along a cyclic path residing within the SU(3)/U(2) parameter space. By employing a combination of X-gates, dove prisms, and double cylindrical lenses, we achieve the cyclic evolution and analyse the resultant GP through our designed Sagnac interferometer. Our theoretical study may find potential in high-dimensional quantum computation using twisted photons and in exploring the geometric structure of such optical systems.

Fault-tolerant quantum computation using low-cost joint measurements

We introduce a new method to implement joint measurements using a 4-qubit twist defect on a rotated surface code. The proposed method enables us to perform logical S (Phase gate), T (π/8\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$\\pi /8$$\\end{document} gate), and H (Hadamard) with low overhead. Combined with other universal quantum gates, we can implement fault-tolerant quantum computation at the lattice surgery level beyond the gate level while saving considerable resources. We compare our method with previous methods using benchmark circuits by calculating the space and time costs. The proposed method requires additional lines of physical qubits for each encoded patch. Although it slightly increases the space cost for logical H compared to the previous work, it reduces the time cost. In addition, the proposed method decreases the space cost and time cost by introducing a 4-qubit twist defect for logical S and T. Therefore, the overall space-time cost is reduced.

Mechanically induced correlated errors on superconducting qubits with relaxation times exceeding 0.4 ms

Superconducting qubits are among the most advanced candidates for achieving fault-tolerant quantum computing. Despite recent significant advancements in the qubit lifetimes, the origin of the loss mechanism for state-of-the-art qubits is still subject to investigation. Furthermore, the successful implementation of quantum error correction requires negligible correlated errors between qubits. Here, we realize long-lived superconducting transmon qubits that exhibit fluctuating lifetimes, averaging 0.2 ms and exceeding 0.4 ms – corresponding to quality factors above 5 million and 10 million, respectively. We then investigate their dominant error mechanism. By introducing novel time-resolved error measurements that are synchronized with the operation of the pulse tube cooler in a dilution refrigerator, we find that mechanical vibrations from the pulse tube induce nonequilibrium dynamics in highly coherent qubits, leading to their correlated bit-flip errors. Our findings not only deepen our understanding of the qubit error mechanisms but also provide valuable insights into potential error-mitigation strategies for achieving fault tolerance by decoupling superconducting qubits from their mechanical environments.

Reduced-order modeling on a near-term quantum computer

Quantum computing is an advancing area of research in which computer hardware and algorithms are developed to take advantage of quantum mechanical phenomena. In recent studies, quantum algorithms have shown promise in solving linear systems of equations as well as systems of linear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) and partial differential equations (PDEs). Reduced-order modeling (ROM) algorithms for studying fluid dynamics have shown success in identifying linear operators that can describe flowfields, where dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) is a particularly useful method in which a linear operator is identified from data. In this work, DMD is reformulated as an optimization problem to propagate the state of the linearized dynamical system on a quantum computer. This reformulation was chosen as a means of facilitating implementation on a near-term quantum computer. Quadratic unconstrained binary optimization (QUBO), a technique for optimizing quadratic polynomials in binary variables, allows for quantum annealing algorithms to be applied. A quantum circuit model (quantum approximation optimization algorithm, QAOA) is utilized to obtain predictions of the state trajectories. Results are shown for the quantum-ROM predictions for flow over a 2D cylinder at Re = 220 and flow over a NACA0009 airfoil at Re = 500 and α=15∘. The quantum-ROM predictions are found to depend on the number of bits utilized for a fixed point representation and the truncation level of the DMD model. Comparisons with DMD predictions from a classical computer algorithm are made, as well as an analysis of the computational complexity and prospects for future, more fault-tolerant quantum computers.

Essay: Quantum Sensing with Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Platforms for Fundamental Physics.

Atomic, molecular, and optical (AMO) physics has been at the forefront of the development of quantum science while laying the foundation for modern technology. With the growing capabilities of quantum control of many atoms for engineered many-body states and quantum entanglement, a key question emerges: what critical impact will the second quantum revolution with ubiquitous applications of entanglement bring to bear on fundamental physics? In this Essay, we argue that a compelling long-term vision for fundamental physics and novel applications is to harness the rapid development of quantum information science to define and advance the frontiers of measurement physics, with strong potential for fundamental discoveries. As quantum technologies, such as fault-tolerant quantum computing and entangled quantum sensor networks, become much more advanced than today's realization, we wonder what doors of basic science can these tools unlock. We anticipate that some of the most intriguing and challenging problems, such as quantum aspects of gravity, fundamental symmetries, or new physics beyond the minimal standard model, will be tackled at the emerging quantum measurement frontier. Minimizing readout-induced noise for early fault-tolerant quantum computers

Quantum error correcting code can diagnose potential errors and correct them based on measured outcomes by leveraging syndrome measurement. However, mid-circuit measurement has been technically challenging for early fault-tolerant quantum computers and the readout-induced noise acts as a main contributor to the logical infidelity. We present a different method for syndrome extraction, namely , that requires only a single-shot measurement on a single ancilla, while the canonical syndrome measurement requires multiple measurements to extract the eigenvalue for each stabilizer generator. As such, we can detect the error in the logical state with minimized readout-induced noise. By adopting our method as a precheck routine for quantum error correcting cycles, we can significantly reduce the readout overhead, the idling time, and the logical error rate during syndrome measurement. We numerically analyze the performance of our protocol using Iceberg code and Steane code under realistic noise parameters based on superconducting hardware and demonstrate the advantage of our protocol in the near-term scenario. As mid-circuit measurements are still error-prone for near-term quantum hardware, our method could boost the applications of early fault-tolerant quantum computing. Realization of fractional quantum Hall state with interacting photons.

Fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states are known for their robust topological order and possess properties that are appealing for applications in fault-tolerant quantum computing. An engineered quantum platform would provide opportunities to operate FQH states without an external magnetic field and enhance local and coherent manipulation of these exotic states. We demonstrate a lattice version of photon FQH states using a programmable on-chip platform based on photon blockade and engineering gauge fields on a two-dimensional circuit quantum electrodynamics system. We observe the effective photon Lorentz force and butterfly spectrum in the artificial gauge field, a prerequisite for FQH states. After adiabatic assembly of Laughlin FQH wave function of 1/2 filling factor from localized photons, we observe strong density correlation and chiral topological flow among the FQH photons. We then verify the unique features of FQH states in response to external fields, including the incompressibility of generating quasiparticles and the smoking-gun signature of fractional quantum Hall conductivity. Our work illustrates a route to the creation and manipulation of novel strongly correlated topological quantum matter composed of photons and opens up possibilities for fault-tolerant quantum information devices.

Modeling the performance of early fault-tolerant quantum algorithms

Progress in fault-tolerant quantum computation (FTQC) has driven the pursuit of practical applications with (EFTQC). These devices, limited in their qubit counts and fault-tolerance capabilities, require algorithms that can accommodate some degrees of error, which are known as EFTQC algorithms. To predict the onset of early quantum advantage, a comprehensive methodology is needed to develop and analyze EFTQC algorithms, drawing insights from both the methodologies of noisy intermediate-scale quantum and traditional FTQC. To address this need, we propose such a methodology for modeling algorithm performance on EFTQC devices under varying degrees of error. As a case study, we apply our methodology to analyze the performance of randomized Fourier estimation (RFE) [Kshirsagar, Katabarwa, and Johnson, ], an EFTQC algorithm for phase estimation. We investigate the runtime performance and the fault-tolerant overhead of RFE in comparison to the traditional quantum phase estimation algorithm. Our analysis reveals that RFE achieves significant savings in physical qubit counts while having a much higher runtime upper bound. We anticipate even greater physical qubit savings when considering more realistic assumptions about the performance of EFTQC devices. By providing insights into the performance trade-offs and resource requirements of EFTQC algorithms, our work contributes to the development of practical and efficient quantum computing solutions on the path to quantum advantage. Probing single electrons across 300-mm spin qubit wafers

Building a fault-tolerant quantum computer will require vast numbers of physical qubits. For qubit technologies based on solid-state electronic devices1–3, integrating millions of qubits in a single processor will require device fabrication to reach a scale comparable to that of the modern complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) industry. Equally important, the scale of cryogenic device testing must keep pace to enable efficient device screening and to improve statistical metrics such as qubit yield and voltage variation. Spin qubits1,4,5 based on electrons in Si have shown impressive control fidelities6–9 but have historically been challenged by yield and process variation10–12. Here we present a testing process using a cryogenic 300-mm wafer prober13 to collect high-volume data on the performance of hundreds of industry-manufactured spin qubit devices at 1.6 K. This testing method provides fast feedback to enable optimization of the CMOS-compatible fabrication process, leading to high yield and low process variation. Using this system, we automate measurements of the operating point of spin qubits and investigate the transitions of single electrons across full wafers. We analyse the random variation in single-electron operating voltages and find that the optimized fabrication process leads to low levels of disorder at the 300-mm scale. Together, these results demonstrate the advances that can be achieved through the application of CMOS-industry techniques to the fabrication and measurement of spin qubit devices.

Virtual Photon-Mediated Quantum State Transfer and Remote Entanglement between Spin Qubits in Quantum Dots Using Superadiabatic Pulses.

Spin qubits in semiconductor quantum dots are an attractive candidate for scalable quantum information processing. Reliable quantum state transfer and entanglement between spatially separated spin qubits is a highly desirable but challenging goal. Here, we propose a fast and high-fidelity quantum state transfer scheme for two spin qubits mediated by virtual microwave photons. Our general strategy involves using a superadiabatic pulse to eliminate non-adiabatic transitions, without the need for increased control complexity. We show that arbitrary quantum state transfer can be achieved with a fidelity of 95.1% within a 60 ns short time under realistic parameter conditions. We also demonstrate the robustness of this scheme to experimental imperfections and environmental noises. Furthermore, this scheme can be directly applied to the generation of a remote Bell entangled state with a fidelity as high as 97.6%. These results pave the way for fault-tolerant quantum computation on spin quantum network architecture platforms.

Heralded Three-Photon Entanglement from a Single-Photon Source on a Photonic Chip.

In the quest to build general-purpose photonic quantum computers, fusion-based quantum computation has risen to prominence as a promising strategy. This model allows a ballistic construction of large cluster states which are universal for quantum computation, in a scalable and loss-tolerant way without feed forward, by fusing many small n-photon entangled resource states. However, a key obstacle to this architecture lies in efficiently generating the required essential resource states on photonic chips. One such critical seed state that has not yet been achieved is the heralded three-photon Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (3-GHZ) state. Here, we address this elementary resource gap, by reporting the first experimental realization of a heralded 3-GHZ state. Our implementation employs a low-loss and fully programmable photonic chip that manipulates six indistinguishable single photons of wavelengths in the telecommunication regime. Conditional on the heralding detection, we obtain the desired 3-GHZ state with a fidelity 0.573±0.024. Our Letter marks an important step for the future fault-tolerant photonic quantum computing, leading to the acceleration of building a large-scale optical quantum computer.

High-fidelity spin qubit operation and algorithmic initialization above 1 K

The encoding of qubits in semiconductor spin carriers has been recognized as a promising approach to a commercial quantum computer that can be lithographically produced and integrated at scale1–10. However, the operation of the large number of qubits required for advantageous quantum applications11–13 will produce a thermal load exceeding the available cooling power of cryostats at millikelvin temperatures. As the scale-up accelerates, it becomes imperative to establish fault-tolerant operation above 1 K, at which the cooling power is orders of magnitude higher14–18. Here we tune up and operate spin qubits in silicon above 1 K, with fidelities in the range required for fault-tolerant operations at these temperatures19–21. We design an algorithmic initialization protocol to prepare a pure two-qubit state even when the thermal energy is substantially above the qubit energies and incorporate radiofrequency readout to achieve fidelities up to 99.34% for both readout and initialization. We also demonstrate single-qubit Clifford gate fidelities up to 99.85% and a two-qubit gate fidelity of 98.92%. These advances overcome the fundamental limitation that the thermal energy must be well below the qubit energies for the high-fidelity operation to be possible, surmounting a main obstacle in the pathway to scalable and fault-tolerant quantum computation.

Quantum spin driven Yu-Shiba-Rusinov multiplets and fermion-parity-preserving phase transition in K3C60

Magnetic impurities in superconductors are of increasing interest due to emergent Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states and Majorana zero modes for fault-tolerant quantum computation. However, a direct relationship between the YSR multiple states and magnetic anisotropy splitting of quantum impurity spins remains poorly characterized. By using scanning tunneling microscopy, we systematically resolve individual transition-metal (Fe, Cr, and Ni) impurities induced YSR multiplets as well as their Zeeman effects in the K3C60 superconductor. The YSR multiplets show identical d orbital-like wave functions that are symmetry-mismatched to the threefold K3C60(1 1 1) host surface, breaking point-group symmetries of the spatial distribution of YSR bound states in real space. Remarkably, we identify an unprecedented fermion-parity-preserving quantum phase transition between ground states with opposite signs of the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy that can be manipulated by an external magnetic field. These findings can be readily understood in terms of anisotropy splitting of quantum impurity spins, and thus elucidate the intricate interplay between the magnetic anisotropy and YSR multiplets.
