Investigation of the photolysis process of benzo(a)anthracene (BaA) on polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polystyrene (PS) microplastics: Plastics aging effect, transformation products and toxicity assessment

Microplastics (MPs) and persistent pollutants (POPs) are new pollutants that are extensively studied worldwide. To fill the gaps that the degradation processes and mechanisms of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) on the surface of most MPs are still unclear, the photochemical transformation of benzo(a)anthracene (BaA) on polyvinyl chloride (PVC) MPs and polystyrene (PS) MPs in water were investigated and compared. The photolysis of BaA on the surface of PS in water proceeded easier than that on PVC within the 48 h irradiation period, with the pseudo-first-order rate constant of 0.0489 min−1 and 0.0181 min−1, respectively, which can be ascribed to the smaller particle size and more OH production of PS MPs. Due to the light competition between the chromophore and BaA as well as the light-shielding effect, aged MPs showed an inhibitory effect on the degradation of BaA compared with pristine MPs. For BaA/PVC MPs system, the degradation of BaA in real water was not significantly affected by coexisting ions and humic acid (HA) (p < 0.05), while slight inhibitory effect on the degradation of BaA appeared for PS MPs in different water matrices (UP: 86.97 %, YR: 84.47 %, PR: 81.42 % and HR: 83.21 %). According to the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) test, quenching experiment and probe experiment, the relative contribution of direct photolysis (PVC: 82.02 %; PS: 69.54 %) and indirect photolysis (PVC: 17.98 %; PS: 30.46 %) was confirmed. A total of 14 products were identified, and the product types were not affected by plastics aging. The results of the toxicity assessment indicated that although some intermediate products remained toxic to aquatic organisms, the toxicity of most products was lower than that of BaA. This study provides new insights into the environmental fate of PAHs and the role of MPs in the photolysis process of contaminants in surface water.

The effect of bioturbation on the release behavior of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from sediments: A sediment–seawater microcosm experiment combined with a fugacity model

The effects of two benthonic species, Perinereis aibuhitensis and Matuta planipes Fabricius, on the release of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from sediments were investigated using a sediment–seawater microcosm. A Level IV fugacity model was used to simulate the behavior and fate of PAHs in the environment. This study revealed that both benthos significantly influenced the release of PAHs, and Matuta planipes Fabricius had a stronger disturbance effect than another. The final concentrations of Matuta planipes Fabricius group, Perinereis aibuhitensis group and the control group in the seawater phase reached 10.8, 9.94 and 7.90 μg/L, respectively. There were certain differences in the behaviour of the two benthonic species. Matuta planipes Fabricius caused more sediment resuspension, while Perinereis aibuhitensis increased the total organic carbon (TOC) content in the environment. The vertical concentration distribution of sediment indicated that vertical mixing was slightly stronger in the Matuta planipes Fabricius group than that in the Perinereis aibuhitensis group. The fugacity model effectively simulated the release behavior of PAHs, providing insight into PAH transport and distribution. The results demonstrated that bioturbation could promote the release of PAHs from seawater. The amount of PAHs released was significantly correlated with the biological habits of the benthos.

Sediment records and multi-media transfer and fate of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in Dianchi Lake over the past 100 years

This study analyzed the fate and transfer of PAHs through multiple media in Dianchi Lake and the sediment records of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediments. The model simulation results showed the simulated concentrations to be in good agreement with the measured values. The concentration and total amount of PAHs were the highest in the sediment, which is an important sink for PAHs in lake systems. The main transport direction of the PAHs in the three phases was from the atmosphere to the water to the sediment. Advection and emission inputs were the primary input pathways for PAHs in the atmosphere, and advection output was the main removal path. The main input sources pathways for PAHs in sediments was the sedimentation of particulate matter in water, with diffusion and degradation being the primary methods of removal. Advection and atmospheric dry and wet deposition were the main sources of PAHs in water, with particulate deposition being the primary removal process. The range of PAHs was 336–3520 ng/g in sediments in Dianchi Lake, with an average of 1569 ng/g, peaking in 2012. Among the predicted future PAH concentrations in the sediments under the five shared socioeconomic pathways (SSPs), the lowest PAH concentration was found under SSP3 from 2025 to 2035, whereas the lowest PAH concentration was found under SSP4 from 2035 to 2050. In the sustainable path of SSP1, although the concentration of PAH pollutants showed an increasing trend in the short term, the increase in PAHs concentration in sediments slowed in the long run.

Environmental fate and health risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration during the 21st century

Understanding the spatiotemporal distribution and behavior of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the context of climate change and human activities is essential for effective environmental management and public health protection. This study utilized an integrated simulation system that combines land-use, hydrological, and multimedia fugacity models to predict the concentrations, transportation, and degradation of 16 priority-controlled PAHs across six environmental compartments (air, water, soil, sediment, vegetation, and impermeable surfaces) within one of the world's prominent urban agglomerations, the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration (YRDUA), under future Shared Socio-economic Pathways (SSP)-Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP) scenarios. Incremental lifetime carcinogenic risk for adults and children exposed to PAHs were also evaluated. The results show a declining trend in PAHs concentrations and associated health risks during the 21st century. Land use types, hydrological characteristics, population, and GDP, have significant correlations with the fate of PAHs. The primary removal for PAHs is determined to be driven by advection through air and water. PAHs covering on impermeable surfaces pose a relatively higher health risk compared to those in other environmental media. This study offers valuable insights into PAHs pollution in the YRDUA, aiming to ensure public health safety, with the potential for application in other urban areas.

Air‐Sea Gas Exchange and Its Potential Influence on the Regional Fate of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in the East China Marginal Sea

AbstractTo investigate the air‐sea gas exchange and its potential influence on the regional fate of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the East China Marginal Seas (ECMS), which consist of the East China Sea (ECS) and Yellow Sea (YS), we collected air and surface seawater samples of this area in the summer 2018 and winter 2019, respectively. Generally, PAHs underwent a strong volatilization process in the ECMS in both summer and winter. Good correlations between wind speed and the magnitude of air‐sea gas exchange were found for low molecular weight PAHs, suggesting the rate of their air‐sea gas exchange was influenced by the static stability of overlying atmosphere. However, such an influence for high molecular weight PAHs was constrained by their low Henry's law constant. Dissolved concentration of PAHs in surface seawater was another key factor regulating their air‐sea gas exchange, which not only influenced the rate of air‐sea gas exchange but also was involved in the exchange direction. Higher air‐sea gas exchange fluxes of PAHs in winter were attributed to their increasing dissolved concentrations in seawater during this season. A mass conservation analysis revealed a huge volatilization loss of PAHs from seawater to atmosphere, suggesting air‐sea gas exchange might be a key process to modulate the distribution and occurrence of PAHs in the ECS and YS. Such a loss of PAHs in seawater might be compensated by the sediment resuspension, which implied that the sedimentary deposit could serve as a secondary source of PAHs in seawater and overlying atmosphere.

Increased concentration of PAH derivatives in biochar-amended soil observed in a long-term experiment

During biochar preparation or application some toxic substances may be formed. The established limitations of the content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) aim to monitor the fate of PAHs in the life cycle of biochar. The latest studies have revealed that besides PAHs, some of their derivatives with confirmed toxicity are formed. There has been no policy regards PAH derivatives in biochar yet. The aim of the presented studies was the estimation the changes in the content of PAHs and their derivatives during the agricultural application of biochar. A pot experiment with grass revealed that in a short time, both the content of PAHs and their derivatives was reduced. Similarly, when biochar was added to soil in a long-term experiment, the content of determined derivatives was below the limit of detection, whereas interestingly, the content of pristine PAHs increased with time. Co-addition of biochar and sewage sludge increased the content of PAHs and their derivatives indicating potential environmental hazard due to their presence. However, the key point is the estimation of the bioavailability of PAHs and their derivatives as only the bioavailable fraction is revealing the environmental hazard.

Gas–particle partitioning and dry deposition of atmospheric parent, alkylated, nitrated and hydroxyl polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons over the Bohai sea and northern Yellow sea in autumn

To elucidate the gas–particle partitioning characteristics and dry deposition contributions of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the marine environment, 23 integrated air samples were collected during a research cruise in the northern Yellow Sea (NYS) and Bohai Sea (BS) in mid-autumn 2020. The atmospheric concentrations of 23 parent PAHs (PPAHs), 18 alkylated PAHs (APAHs), five nitrated PAHs (NPAHs), and seven hydroxyl PAHs (OPAHs) in gaseous and particulate phases were measured simultaneously. The total concentrations of 53 PAHs varied from 8.77 to 348 ng/m3. The 2-ring and 3-ring PPAHs and APAHs had lower particle-bound fractions than those of the NPAHs and OPAHs. For the gas–particle partitioning of the PAHs, the gas–particle partitioning coefficients (Kp) estimated using an octanol–air partition coefficient (KOA)–based model and KOA/soot–air partition coefficient (KSA) dual model (KOA–KSA dual model) were lower than the Kp measured in the field. Underestimation of the Kp commonly occurred with these models, but the KOA–KSA dual model was more suitable than the KOA–based model for gas–particle partitioning of the 53 atmospheric PAHs in the BS and NYS. The estimated atmospheric dry deposition fluxes of the 53 PAHs ranged from 631 to 14,345 ng/m2/day. The BS receives a PAHs load of up to 117 tons/year. The study provides background information on the occurrence and environmental fate of PAHs and could be vitally important for environmental safety management for the Northwest Pacific Ocean.

Distribution and transfer rules of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in soil-wheat ecosystems in China.

The translocation and accumulation patterns of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the soil-crop system have important implications for the fate of PAHs and human health. This study summarized the concentrations of 16 priority PAHs in the soils and various parts of mature winter wheat in China, sourced from a screening of previous literature in English and Chinese databases. The study analyzes the distribution characteristics, transfer patterns, and human health risks of PAHs in sites studied in Shaanxi, Henan, and Shandong provinces. The results showed that the concentrations of Σ16 PAHs in the rhizosphere soil of wheat ranged from 10.30 to 893.68 ng/g, in descending order of Shaanxi > Henan > average > Shandong. In sites with mild to moderate contamination (200 < Σ16 PAHs < 600 ng/g; i.e., Henan and Shaanxi), the concentration of Σ16 PAHs in the roots was higher than that in the stems or the grains, while in contamination-free sites (Σ16 PAHs < 200 ng/g; i.e., Shandong), the highest concentration of Σ16 PAHs was found in the stems. Generally, the concentrations of PAHs increased in the order of roots-stems-grains. The predominant PAHs in each part of wheat were 2- or 3-ring compounds, with five- or six-ring PAHs being more prevalent in wheat from Shanghe, Shandong. The bioaccumulation factors of different wheat parts from Shaanxi and Henan were consistently smaller than 1, and low- and medium-ring (2-4 rings) PAHs had bigger bioconcentration factors than high-ring (5-6 rings) PAHs. However, the accumulation of PAHs in the aboveground parts of wheat was larger than that in the underground parts of the Shandong sites. The linear regression relationship between the octanol-water partition coefficient and root concentration factor (RCF) of PAHs reflected that low and medium-ring PAHs were more easily absorbed by wheat roots than high-ring PAHs in Shaanxi and Henan. Our assessment of the health risks of oral wheat intake in adults and children by the incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) model found a potential carcinogenic risk for both age groups in each province, with higher risks in adults than in children.

Soil health restoration in degraded lands: A microbiological perspective

AbstractLand degradation is one of the most pressing environmental problems of the 21st century particularly due to its impact on global food security and environmental quality through the loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services. Land degradation happens at an accelerated rate and affects regions inhabited by more than one‐third population of the world. This phenomenon resulted in a dramatic reduction in the productivity of cropland and rangeland of world thus threatening the environmental quality and food security. It manifests in various forms such as desertification, soil erosion, sodicity, salinity, heavy metal contamination, pesticide contamination, declining soil fertility, and fate of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The world now has a real chance for the next generation to grow sustainably and eliminate acute food scarcity. Microbes, as vital elements of soil, play an important role in maintaining soil biological properties and fertility. Due to their multifarious biological functions and metabolic uniqueness, microorganisms can fix or solubilize nutrients, add organic matters to the soil to improve its quality. Many of the microorganisms can produce biological compounds or enzymes, which can degrade or scavenge toxic substances from the soils. In this review, we have discussed in detail how diverse microorganisms can help to restore different types of degraded lands. The limitations in application of microorganisms in restoration of soil health and possible scopes to improve the applicability have also been discussed here.

Migration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the rhizosphere micro-interface of soil-ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) system

The unclear multi-media and multi-interface processes of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in environments have drawn great concern. Here, 16 controlled PAHs were selected to reveal the differences in the bioavailability and migration of congeners in soil-ryegrass exposure system. The presence of ryegrass in the exposure groups (with newly introduced PAHs) resulted in a decrease in PAHs dissipation (31.3 %) from soil compared to the unplanted groups (43.2 %). The presence of ryegrass inhibited the soil-air exchange process, which has not been widely reported. PAH congeners with less benzene rings (molecular weight < B[a]A) had consistent bioavailability before and after long-term aging, the competition between adsorption/absorption to plants and soil was not strong (RCFs < 3.5), and their migration in the rhizosphere rapidly reached equilibrium. PAH congeners with more benzene rings (molecular weight ≥ B[a]A) adsorbed to soil particles and significantly decreased their bioavailability after long-term aging. Their concentrations in the rhizosphere were stable and lower than bulk soil, revealing their slow equilibrium process in soil. In addition, PAHs with larger molecular weight and KOW showed less migration at the rhizosphere micro-interface. The migration behavior of congeners with close KOW depended on their molecular structure. Congeners with non-symmetric K-region or L-region showed greater migration ability in the rhizosphere. These findings revealed the fate of PAHs, especially different PAH congeners, in the rhizosphere interfaces for the first time, and explored the molecular mechanisms that affect their rhizosphere behaviors, improving the understanding and knowledge of PAHs in the microenvironment, providing new data on evaluating and controlling the environmental risks of PAHs.

A study combining a sediment-seawater microcosm with multimedia fugacity model to evaluate the effect of tidal cycles on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon release from sediments

Estuarine sediments are key storage sites for persistent organic pollutants (POPs), and estuaries are strongly influenced by tides throughout the year. Although much work has been done concerning on POPs release, related questions on tidal action have not been considered in the release process. Herein, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) release from sediment to seawater was investigated under tidal action by combining a tidal microcosm with level IV fugacity model. The results showed that PAHs release with tidal action was 2.0–3.5 times the accumulation of that without tidal action. Tidal action was confirmed to influence strongly PAHs release from sediment to seawater. We also quantified suspended substance (SS) in the overlying water, and an obvious positive correlation between the PAHs concentration and SS content was found. In addition, an increase in seawater depth enhanced the intensity of tidal action, and more PAHs were released, especially dissolved PAHs. Moreover, the fugacity model results showed a good fit with the experimental results. The simulated values demonstrated that the PAHs release was accomplished via two processes, “rapid release” and “slow release”. And the sediment played a key role in the fate of PAHs and was a major sink in the sediment-seawater system.

Bacterial benz(a)anthracene catabolic networks in contaminated soils and their modulation by other co-occurring HMW-PAHs

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are major environmental pollutants in a number of point source contaminated sites, where they are found embedded in complex mixtures containing different polyaromatic compounds. The application of bioremediation technologies is often constrained by unpredictable end-point concentrations enriched in recalcitrant high molecular weight (HMW)-PAHs. The aim of this study was to elucidate the microbial populations and potential interactions involved in the biodegradation of benz(a)anthracene (BaA) in PAH-contaminated soils. The combination of DNA stable isotope probing (DNA-SIP) and shotgun metagenomics of 13C-labeled DNA identified a member of the recently described genus Immundisolibacter as the key BaA-degrading population. Analysis of the corresponding metagenome assembled genome (MAG) revealed a highly conserved and unique genetic organization in this genus, including novel aromatic ring-hydroxylating dioxygenases (RHD). The influence of other HMW-PAHs on BaA degradation was ascertained in soil microcosms spiked with BaA and fluoranthene (FT), pyrene (PY) or chrysene (CHY) in binary mixtures. The co-occurrence of PAHs resulted in a significant delay in the removal of PAHs that were more resistant to biodegradation, and this delay was associated with relevant microbial interactions. Members of Immundisolibacter, associated with the biodegradation of BaA and CHY, were outcompeted by Sphingobium and Mycobacterium, triggered by the presence of FT and PY, respectively. Our findings highlight that interacting microbial populations modulate the fate of PAHs during the biodegradation of contaminant mixtures in soils.

A critical insight into occurrence and fate of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their green remediation approaches

Over the last century, the tremendous growth in industrial activities particularly in the sectors of pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals and the reckless application of fertilizers and insecticides has raised the contamination of polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) tremendously. For more than a decade, the main focus of environmental experts is to come up with management approaches for the clean-up of sites polluted with PAHs. These are ubiquitous in nature i.e., widely distributed in ecosystem ranging from soil, air and marine water. Most of the PAHs possess immunotoxicity, carcinogenicity and genotoxicity. Being highly soluble in lipids, they are readily absorbed into the mammalian gastro intestinal tract. They are widely distributed with marked tendency of getting localized into body fat in varied tissues. Several remediation technologies have been tested for the removal of these environmental contaminants, particularly bioremediation has turned out to be a hope as the safest and cost-effective option. Therefore, this review first discusses various sources of PAHs, their effect on human health and interactions of PAHs with soils and sediments. In this review, a holistic insight of current scenario of existing remediation technologies and how they can be improvised along with the hindrances in the path of these technologies are properly addressed.

Modeling the long-term fate of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and public health risk in Bohai Bay Sea Area, China

The target of this study was to reconstruct the historical concentration, distribution, variation, and exposure risk evaluation for EPA PAHs to the whole sea of Bohai Bay and the coastal population, by employing a specific dynamic multimedia model during 1950–2050. The unsteady-state model, driven by temporal energy activities from 1950 and sustainable scenarios based on socioeconomic development, indicated the annual emission increased by 4.6 times (from 84.8 tons to 391 tons) until 2020 and resulted in concentrations up to 5.2 times in the atmospheric compartment, and 4.9 times in seawater. Two peak concentrations in 1997 and 2014, consistent with total PAHs input revealed significant regional anthropogenic input in northern Bohai Bay (Tianjin) and southern Bohai Bay (Hebei). The peak-to-peak values of the timing concentration revealed a notably alternative increase in the south (+109.4 %–128.6 %), instead of the rapid decline in the north (−21.5 %–44.5 %). The dominant processes at air-seawater interfaces were air-seawater molecular transfer (from 38.4 % to 51.8 %), and wet deposition (from 60.5 % to 47.5 %). Under 5 shared socioeconomic pathways, the optimal scenario (SSP1) achieved a 24.7 % emission decline, an atmospheric decrease of 15.1 %–31.1 %, and 24.8 %–41.2 % mitigation in seawater during 2020–2050, and each pathway exhibited a general lessening concave in the northern developed municipality, compared with convex in the southern developing regions. The inhalation risk assessment evaluated 10 generations living on Bohai Bay coasts, with an acceptable result, while the current sustainable conceive was with meager fruition in reducing risk.

Environmental fate of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in different layers of tar balls in the Bohai Sea, China

Several tar balls were transversely cut to investigate the fate of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in different layers of tar balls under natural conditions. The highly recalcitrant C30 αβ-hopane was used as an internal biomarker to quantify the weathering levels of different PAHs compounds. The data showed that the values of 16 parent PAHs and their alkylated PAHs in the surface layer were lower than that in the center layer of tar balls, which indicated that the surface layer of tar balls were suffered more serious degradation. In addition, the loss rates of different isomers of the same series were almost the same, indicated that the degradation rate of different isomers in the same series was the same. Despite some degradation, the relative diagnostic ratios of alkylated PAHs in the different layers of the tar balls remained stable. Compare the loss rate of parent and alkylated PAHs, it revealed that the loss rates increased with the increase of alkylation degree. This is the first report on the fate of PAHs in different layers of tar balls. This study provides a quantitative analysis of the PAHs in different layers of tar balls under natural conditions, which is very important for understanding the fate of oil spills.

In situ investigation of N deposit effects on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) photolysis in snow

As snow is an ideal scavenger of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) for both particulate- and gas-phase PAHs, a large amount of PAHs are accumulated in snowpacks. These PAHs could be released from seasonal snowpacks into environment over a short time during the snow melting period, causing a flush of contaminants. Understanding the fate of PAHs in snow therefore is important to evaluate the contaminant flush during snow melting. However, as an important natural process, PAH photolysis in snow is still unclear, especially in the context of global climate change. Therefore, photolysis of the 16 PAHs, which are listed as priority controlled pollutants by United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA), was investigated with N deposit in field in snow in this study. A mixture of the 16 US EPA priority PAHs and nitrate/ammonia were spiked into sealed quartzose bottles containing snow samples in field. The bottles were then exposed to solar radiation in field for 6 h. Experimental results showed that >50% of PAHs were lost during 6 h photolysis, mostly occurred in the first hour. Generally, HMW PAHs were photolyzed faster than LMW PAHs, though the photolysis rate did not strictly increase with molecular weight. Low concentrations of nitrate can enhance photolysis of Ant and Pyr, while photolysis of investigated PAHs was inhibited with nitrate concentration increasing. In contrast, both low and high concentration of ammonium can inhibit PAH photolysis. The inhibiting effect of both nitrate and ammonia on photolysis of HMW PAH is stronger than that of LMW PAHs, indicating direct photolysis of PAHs is the main pathway of PAH degradation in snow in situ. This study firstly showed the effect of N deposition on PAH photolysis in snow. Under current increasing N deposition in northeast China, this study implied that more PAHs in snow could be preserved during winter and released shortly during snowmelt, resulting in high ecological risk in spring.

Emission factors for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from laboratory biomass-burning and their chemical transformations during aging in an oxidation flow reactor

Atmospheric polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) can be emitted from different combustion sources including domestic biomass burning, internal combustion engines, and biomass burning (BB) in wild, prescribed, and agricultural fires. With climate warming and consequent global increases in frequency and severity of wildfires, BB is a dominant source of PAHs emitted into the atmosphere.In this study, six globally and regionally important and representative fuels (Alaskan peat, Moscow peat, Pskov peat, eucalyptus, Malaysian peat, and Malaysian agricultural peat) were burned under controlled conditions in the combustion chamber facility at the Desert Research Institute (DRI, Reno, NV, USA). Gas- and particle-phase BB emissions were aged in an oxidation flow reactor (OFR) to mimic five to sevendays of atmospheric aging. To sample gas- and particle-phase BB emissions, fresh and OFR-aged biomass-burning aerosols were collected on Teflon-impregnated glass fiber filters (TIGF) in tandem with XAD resin media for organic carbon speciation. The objectives of this study were to i) quantify the emission factors for 113 PAHs emitted from the combustion of the six selected fuels, ii) characterize the distribution of PAH compounds between gas and particle phases for these fuels, iii) identify the changes in PAHs during OFR-aging, and iv) evaluate toxicity potential with characterized compounds.We found that combustion emissions of gas-phase PAHs were more abundant (>80 % by mass) than particle-phase PAHs, for emissions from all combusted fuels. The mass fraction of substituted napthalenes in Moscow peat and Malaysian peat emissions were ∼70 % & 84 %, respectively, whereas in Eucalyptus the same fraction was <50 %, which indicates that these substituted compounds can be used as tracers for peat emissions. Mass concentrations of gas- and particle-phase PAHs were reduced by ∼70 % after OFR oxidation. However, the understanding of the fate of PAHs during OFR oxidation requires further investigations. Our results also indicate that the PAH toxicity of BB samples would be underestimated by 10–100 times if only the BaPeq for the 16 US EPA priority PAHs in the particle phase are included.

Analysis of the multi-media environmental behavior of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) within Haizhou Bay using a fugacity model

In this study, we aimed to quantify the transport and fate of PAHs in different environmental phases (air, seawater, soil, sediment and fish), verify application of the Level III fugacity model in a bay simulation, and understand the transport and fate of PAHs in the bay environment on a macroscopic scale. The simulated average concentrations of ∑16PAH in the air and soil (23.8 ng/m3 and 1080.91 ng/g, respectively), which is as a background reference data for the Haizhou Bay. In addition, the soil (307 t), fish (29.4 t), and sediment (9.72 t) phases were found to be important reservoirs in the Haizhou Bay. Emissions from road vehicles (658 t) accounted for the largest share of PAH emissions in the area, and atmospheric deposition contributed most to the input of PAHs to the polluted area in the region. Whereas the contribution of river runoff input was small, and degradation loss was the main output pathway.
