Alpha particle loss measurements and analysis in JET DT plasmas

Abstract Burning reactor plasmas will be self-heated by fusion born alpha particles from deuterium-tritium reactions. Consequently, a thorough understanding of the confinement and transport of DT-born alpha particles is necessary to maintain the plasma self-heating. Measurements of fast ion losses provide a direct means to monitor alpha particle confinement. JET’s 2021-2022 second experimental DT-campaign offers burning plasma scenarios with advanced fast ion loss diagnostics for the first time in nearly 25 years. Coherent and non-coherent alpha losses were observed due to a variety of low frequency MHD activity. This manuscript will present the loss mechanisms, spatial and pitch dependencies, scalings with plasma parameters, correlations with wall impurities, and magnitude of DT-alpha born losses.

Excitation of Alfvén eigenmodes by fusion-born alpha-particles in D-3He plasmas on JET

Alfvén eigenmode (AE) instabilities driven by alpha-particles have been observed in D-3He fusion experiments on the Joint European Torus (JET) with the ITER-like wall. For the efficient generation of fusion alpha-particles from D-3He fusion reaction, the three-ion radio frequency scenario was used to accelerate the neutral beam injection 100 keV deuterons to higher energies in the core of mixed D-3He plasmas at high concentrations of 3He. A large variety of fast-ion driven magnetohydrodynamic modes were observed, including the elliptical Alfvén eigenmodes (EAEs) with mode numbers n = −1 and axisymmetric modes with n = 0 in the frequency range of EAEs. The simultaneous observation of these modes indicates the presence of rather strong alpha-particle population in the plasma with a ‘bump-on-tail’ shaped velocity distribution. Linear stability analysis and Fokker–Planck calculations support the observations. Experimental evidence of the AEs excitation by fusion-born alpha-particles in the D-3He plasma is provided by neutron and gamma-ray diagnostics as well as fast-ion loss measurements. We discuss an experimental proposal for the planned full-scale D-T plasma experiments on JET based on the physics insights gained from these experiments.

Simulating energetic particle losses in JET plasmas with a reverse integration biasing scheme

An integrated energetic particle transport model has been constructed in JET plasmas constrained by experimental fast ion loss measurements. The model incorporates a synthetic fast ion loss detector identical to JET’s thin-foil Faraday cup fast ion loss detector array. The loss model combines analyses from the TRANSP and ORBIT-kick codes with enhanced features for producing the synthetic diagnostic. Extensions to the ORBIT code framework allow a full-orbit representation within the vacuum region that can map particles directly to an installed detector geometry. Since synthetic fast ion loss detectors are plagued by weak loss statistics, a novel reverse integration biasing scheme has been implemented to boost computational efficiency. The model is validated against experimental loss measurements induced by long-lived kink modes and is found to be in good agreement. This confirms the development of a fully integrated transport/loss model which can be quantitatively verified against experiment allowing for future validation and predictive studies. The model is particularly useful for more complicated plasma scenarios that involve multiple fast ion species such as JET’s 2021 DT-campaign.

Self-adaptive diagnostic of radial fast-ion loss measurements on the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak (invited).

A poloidal array of scintillator-based Fast-Ion Loss Detectors (FILDs) has been installed in the ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) tokamak. While all AUG FILD systems are mounted on reciprocating arms driven externally by servomotors, the reciprocating system of the FILD probe located just below the midplane is based on a magnetic coil that is energized in real-time by the AUG discharge control system. This novel reciprocating system allows, for the first time, real-time control of the FILD position including infrared measurements of its probe head temperature to avoid overheating. This considerably expands the diagnostic operational window, enabling unprecedented radial measurements of fast-ion losses. Fast collimator-slit sweeping (up to 0.2 mm/ms) is used to obtain radially resolved velocity-space measurements along 8cm within the scrape-off layer. This provides a direct evaluation of the neutral beam deposition profiles via first-orbit losses. Moreover, the light-ion beam probe (LIBP) technique is used to infer radial profiles of fast-ion orbit deflection. This radial-LIBP technique is applied to trapped orbits (exploring both the plasma core and the FILD stroke near the wall), enabling radial localization of internal plasma fluctuations (neoclassical tearing modes). This is quantitatively compared against electron cyclotron emission measurements, showing excellent agreement. For the first time, radial profiles of fast-ion losses in MHD quiescent plasmas as well as in the presence of magnetic islands and edge localized modes are presented.

Improvements to the Faraday cup fast ion loss detector and magnetohydrodynamic induced fast ion loss measurements in Joint European Torus plasmas.

Upgrades to electronic hardware and detector design have been made to the JET thin-foil Faraday cup fast ion loss detector [Darrow et al., Rev. Sci. Instrum. 75, 3566 (2004)] in anticipation of the upcoming deuterium-tritium (DT) campaign. An improved foil stack design has been implemented, which greatly reduces the number of foil-to-foil shorts, and triaxial cabling has mitigated ambient noise pickup. Initial tests of 200 kHz digitizers, as opposed to the original 5 kHz digitizers, have provided enhanced analysis techniques and direct coherence measurements of fast ion losses with magnetohydrodynamic activity. We present recent loss measurements in JET deuterium plasmas correlated with kink modes, fishbone modes, edge-localized modes, and sawteeth. Sources of systematic noise are discussed with emphasis on capacitive plasma pickup. Overall, the system upgrades have established a diagnostic capable of recording alpha particle losses due to a wide variety of resonant fast ion transport mechanisms to be used in future DT-experiments and modeling efforts.

Excitation of elliptical and toroidal Alfvén eigenmodes by 3He-ions of the MeV-energy range in hydrogen-rich JET plasmas

Elliptical (EAE) and toroidal Alfvén eigenmode (TAE) instabilities have been observed in hydrogen-rich JET discharges of the D-(3He)-H ion cyclotron resonance heating (ICRH) scenario, which is characterized by strong absorption of radio frequency waves at very low concentrations of the resonant 3He-ions. In the experiments, core localized TAEs with a frequency fTAE ≈ 280 kHz with mode numbers n= 3, 4, 5 and 6 were detected. Following the phase with TAE excitation, EAE modes at higher frequencies fEAE ≈ 550–580 kHz with mode numbers n = 1, 3, 5 were seen. These high frequency modes indicate that a MeV range population of trapped energetic ions was present in the plasma. The experimental evidence of existence of the MeV-energy 3He-ions able to excite the AEs is provided by neutron and gamma-ray diagnostics as well as fast ion loss measurements. The ICRH modelling code calculations confirm the acceleration of 3He-ions to MeV energies. The magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) analysis results are consistent with the experimental data showing that the MeV 3He ions satisfy to resonant conditions interacting with TAE and EAE modes. This experiment demonstrates the efficient plasma heating mimicking the conditions representative for the ITER plasmas and contribute to the understanding of fast-ion interaction with MHD wave modes.

Performance of fast-ion loss diagnostic on EAST.

The scintillator-based detector for fast-ion loss measurements has been installed on EAST. To obtain high temporal resolution for fast-ion loss diagnostics, fast photomultiplier tube systems have been developed which can supply the complementary measurements to the previous image system with good energy and pitch resolution by using a CCD camera. By applying the rotatable platform, the prompt losses of beam-ions can be measured in normal and reverse magnetic field. The thick-target bremsstrahlung occurring in the stainless steel shield with energetic electrons can produce X-rays, which will strike on the scintillator based detector. To understand this interference on fast-ion loss signals, the effects of energetic electrons on the scintillator-based detector are studied, including runaway electrons in the plasma ramping-up phase and fast electrons accelerated by the lower hybrid wave.

A rotary and reciprocating scintillator based fast-ion loss detector for the MAST-U tokamak.

The design and unique feature of the first fast-ion loss detector (FILD) for the Mega Amp Spherical Tokamak - Upgrade (MAST-U) is presented here. The MAST-U FILD head is mounted on an axially and angularly actuated mechanism that makes it possible to independently adapt the orientation [0°, 90°] and radial position [1.40 m, 1.60 m] of the FILD head, i.e., its collimator, thus maximizing the detector velocity-space coverage in a broad range of plasma scenarios with different q95. The 3D geometry of the detector has been optimized to detect fast-ion losses from the neutral beam injectors. Orbit simulations are used to calculate the strike map and predict the expected signals. The results show a velocity-space range of [4 cm, 13 cm] in gyroradius and [30°, 85°] in pitch angle, covering the entire neutral beam ion energy range. The optical system will provide direct sight of the scintillator and simultaneous detection with two cameras, giving high spatial and temporal resolution. The MAST-U FILD will shed light on the dominant fast-ion transport mechanisms in one of the world's two largest spherical tokamaks through absolute measurements of fast-ion losses.

Beam-Ion Acceleration during Edge Localized Modes in the ASDEX Upgrade Tokamak.

The acceleration of beam ions during edge localized modes (ELMs) in a tokamak is observed for the first time through direct measurements of fast-ion losses in low collisionality plasmas. The accelerated beam-ion population exhibits well-localized velocity-space structures which are revealed by means of tomographic inversion of the measurement, showing energy gains of the order of tens of keV. This suggests that the ion acceleration results from a resonant interaction between the beam ions and parallel electric fields arising during the ELM. Orbit simulations are carried out to identify the mode-particle resonances responsible for the energy gain in the particle phase space. The observation motivates the incorporation of a kinetic description of fast particles in ELM models and may contribute to a better understanding of the mechanisms responsible for particle acceleration, ubiquitous in astrophysical and space plasmas.

First absolute measurements of fast-ion losses in the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak

A new diagnostic technique that allows to obtain absolute fluxes of fast-ion losses measured with absolutely calibrated scintillator based fast-ion loss detectors (FILD) is presented here. First absolute fluxes of fast-ion losses have been obtained in the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak. An instrument function that includes the scintillator efficiency, collimator geometry, optical transmission and camera efficiency has been constructed. The scintillator response to deuterium ions in the relevant energy range of fast-ions has been characterized using a tandem accelerator. Absolute flux of neutral beam injection (NBI) prompt losses has been obtained in magnetohydrodynamic quiescent plasmas. The temporal evolution of the heat load measured with FILD follows that measured at the FILD entrance obtained with an Infra-Red camera looking at the FILD detector head. ASCOT simulations are in good agreement with the absolute heat load of NBI prompt losses measured with FILD.

Scintillator-based fast ion loss measurements in the EAST.

A new scintillator-based fast ion loss detector (FILD) has been installed on Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) to investigate the fast ion loss behavior in high performance plasma with neutral beam injection (NBI) and ion cyclotron resonance heating (ICRH). A two dimensional 40 mm × 40 mm scintillator-coated (ZnS:Ag) stainless plate is mounted in the front of the detector, capturing the escaping fast ions. Photons from the scintillator plate are imaged with a Phantom V2010 CCD camera. The lost fast ions can be measured with the pitch angle from 60° to 120° and the gyroradius from 10 mm to 180 mm. This paper will describe the details of FILD diagnostic on EAST and describe preliminary measurements during NBI and ICRH heating.

Measurements of fast-ion losses induced by MHD instabilities using a scintillator-based probe in the HL-2A tokamakaaContributed paper, 25th IAEA Fusion Energy Conf. (Saint Petersburg, Russia, 13–18 October 2014) EX/P7-24.

Characteristics of fast-ion losses induced by various magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) instabilities, such as tearing mode (TM), long-lived mode (LLM), and sawtooth crash, have been observed and experimentally investigated in the HL-2A tokamak. To study fast-ion losses, a new scintillator-based lost-fast ion probe has been developed and used, and an increment of the fast-ion loss rate as the MHD amplitude increase has been measured. Compared with TM and LLM, the fast-ion losses induced by sawtooth crash have a broad range in energy and pitch angle. There may be some interactions between fast ions and magnetic disturbance, which cause the losses with a wide range of energy and pitch angle. During disruptions, the total neutron emission rate drops by ~90% as a result of the strong fast-ion losses. The possible reasons for this phenomenon are the strong magnetic perturbations and the drastic change of the fast-ion transport. In addition, the clear experimental evidence of drastic losses of fast ions during disruptions have been obtained.

On the effects of magnetic perturbations on fast ion losses studied at TEXTOR

One criterion for the ignition of a fusion plasma is sufficient fast ion confinement. A key aspect in that context is the maintainability of good fast ion confinement in the presence of non-axisymmetric fields, such as those found in stellarators and during the application of resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) in tokamaks. This paper focuses on the influence of RMPs on the fast ion losses, studied at the Tokamak experiment for technology-oriented research (TEXTOR), a medium-sized device. TEXTOR is equipped with a flexible perturbation coil system, the dynamic ergodic divertor, allowing for the application of static or rotating perturbation fields. A rotating directional probe is used for the radially resolved fast ion loss measurements. The results achieved are presented and discussed for the poloidal/toroidal perturbation modes m/n = 3/1 and 6/2, with static and rotating fields.

Fast-ion losses induced by ELMs and externally applied magnetic perturbations in the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak

Phase-space time-resolved measurements of fast-ion losses induced by edge localized modes (ELMs) and ELM mitigation coils have been obtained in the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak by means of multiple fast-ion loss detectors (FILDs). Filament-like bursts of fast-ion losses are measured during ELMs by several FILDs at different toroidal and poloidal positions. Externally applied magnetic perturbations (MPs) have little effect on plasma profiles, including fast-ions, in high collisionality plasmas with mitigated ELMs. A strong impact on plasma density, rotation and fast-ions is observed, however, in low density/collisionality and q95 plasmas with externally applied MPs. During the mitigation/suppression of type-I ELMs by externally applied MPs, the large fast-ion bursts observed during ELMs are replaced by a steady loss of fast-ions with a broad-band frequency and an amplitude of up to an order of magnitude higher than the neutral beam injection (NBI) prompt loss signal without MPs. Multiple FILD measurements at different positions, indicate that the fast-ion losses due to static 3D fields are localized on certain parts of the first wall rather than being toroidally/poloidally homogeneously distributed. Measured fast-ion losses show a broad energy and pitch-angle range and are typically on banana orbits that explore the entire pedestal/scrape-off-layer (SOL). Infra-red measurements are used to estimate the heat load associated with the MP-induced fast-ion losses. The heat load on the FILD detector head and surrounding wall can be up to six times higher with MPs than without 3D fields. When 3D fields are applied and density pump-out is observed, an enhancement of the fast-ion content in the plasma is typically measured by fast-ion D-alpha (FIDA) spectroscopy. The lower density during the MP phase also leads to a deeper beam deposition with an inward radial displacement of ≈2 cm in the maximum of the beam emission. Orbit simulations are used to test different models for 3D field equilibrium reconstruction including vacuum representation, the free boundary NEMEC code and the two-fluid M3D-C1 code which account for the plasma response. Guiding center simulations predict the maximum level of losses, ≈2.6%, with NEMEC 3D equilibrium. Full orbit simulations overestimate the level of losses in 3D vacuum fields with ≈15% of lost NBI ions.

Multi-mode Alfvénic fast particle transport and losses: numerical versus experimental observation

In many discharges at ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) fast particle losses can be observed due to Alfvénic gap modes, reversed shear Alfvén eigenmodes or core-localized beta Alfvén eigenmodes. For the first time, simulations of experimental conditions in the AUG fusion device are performed for different plasma equilibria (particularly for different, also non-monotonic q profiles). The numerical tool is the extended version of the HAGIS code (Pinches et al 1998 Comput. Phys. Commun. 111 133–49, Brüdgam 2010 PhD Thesis), which also computes the particle motion in the vacuum region between the vessel wall in addition to the internal plasma volume. For this work, a consistent fast particle distribution function was implemented to represent the strongly anisotropic fast particle population as generated by ICRH minority heating. Furthermore, HAGIS was extended to use more realistic eigenfunctions, calculated by the gyrokinetic eigenvalue solver LIGKA (Lauber et al 2007 J. Comput. Phys. 226 447–65). The main aim of these simulations is to allow fast ion loss measurements to be interpreted with a theoretical basis. Fast particle losses are modelled and directly compared with experimental measurements (García-Muñoz et al 2010 Phys. Rev. Lett. 104 185002). The phase space distribution and the mode-correlation signature of the fast particle losses allows them to be characterized as prompt, resonant or diffusive (non-resonant). The experimental findings are reproduced numerically. It is found that a large number of diffuse losses occur in the lower energy range (at around 1/3 of the birth energy) particularly in multiple mode scenarios (with different mode frequencies), due to a phase space overlap of resonances leading to a so-called domino (Berk et al 1995 Nucl. Fusion 35 1661) transport process. In inverted q profile equilibria, the combination of radially extended global modes and large particle orbits leads to losses with energies down to 1/10th of the birth energy.

A rotating directional probe for the measurements of fast ion losses and plasma rotation at Tokamak Experiment for Technology Oriented Research

This work discusses a new directional probe designed for measurements of fast ion losses and the plasma rotation with a high angular resolution in magnetically confined plasmas. Directional and especially Mach probes are commonly used diagnostics for plasma flow measurements, and their applicability for the fast ion losses detection has been demonstrated. A limitation of static Mach probes is their low angular resolution. At the Tokamak Experiment for Technology Oriented Research, the angular resolution is strongly restricted by the finite number of available measurement channels. In a dynamic plasma, where instabilities can lead to local changes of the field line pitch-angle, plasma flow, or fast ion losses, a low angular resolution makes a precise data analysis difficult and reduces the quality of the measured data. The new probe design, the rotating directional probe, combines the features of early directional probes and Mach probes. It consists of two radially aligned arrays of nine Langmuir probe pins with each array facing opposite directions. During the measurement the probe head rotates along its axis to measure the ion saturation current from all directions. As a result, the rotating directional probe simultaneously provides an angular dependent plasma flow and fast ion losses measurement at different radial positions. Based on the angular dependent data, a precise determination of the current density is made. In addition, the simultaneous measurement of the ion saturation current at different radial positions allows for resolving radially varying field line pitch-angles and identifying the radial dynamic of processes like fast ion losses.

Numerical simulation of fast ion loss detector measurements for fishbones on JET

A synthetic diagnostic model for the simulation of energy and pitch angle resolved measurements of fast ion losses obtained by 2D scintillation-type detectors is presented and subsequently tested on a JET discharge with fishbones (previously documented in Perez von Thun et al 2010 Nucl. Fusion 50 084009). The simulated energy and pitch angle distributions at the detector are found to be in excellent agreement with the measurements. The simulations further suggest that nearly all the fast ion losses take place in the early growth phase of the fishbone cycle, and reach their maximum well ahead of the magnetic perturbation peak.

Scintillator-based diagnostic for fast ion loss measurements on DIII-D

A new scintillator-based fast ion loss detector has been installed on DIII-D with the time response (>100 kHz) needed to study energetic ion losses induced by Alfvén eigenmodes and other MHD instabilities. Based on the design used on ASDEX Upgrade, the diagnostic measures the pitch angle and gyroradius of ion losses based on the position of the ions striking the two-dimensional scintillator. For fast time response measurements, a beam splitter and fiberoptics couple a portion of the scintillator light to a photomultiplier. Reverse orbit following techniques trace the lost ions to their possible origin within the plasma. Initial DIII-D results showing prompt losses and energetic ion loss due to MHD instabilities are discussed.

Fast-ion losses induced by ACs and TAEs in the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak

The phase-space of convective and diffusive fast-ion losses induced by shear Alfvén eigenmodes has been characterized in the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak. Time-resolved energy and pitch-angle measurements of fast-ion losses correlated in frequency and phase with toroidal Alfvén eigenmodes (TAEs) and Alfvén cascades (ACs) have allowed to identify both loss mechanisms. While single ACs and TAEs eject resonant fast-ions in a convective process, the overlapping of AC and TAE spatial structures leads to a large fast-ion diffusion and loss. The threshold for diffusive fast-ion losses depends on the ion energy (gyroradius). Diffusive fast-ion losses with gyroradius ≈70 mm have been observed with a single TAE for local radial displacements of the magnetic field lines larger than ≈2 mm. Multiple frequency chirping ACs cause an enhancement of the diffusive losses. The ACs and TAEs radial structures have been reconstructed by means of cross-correlation techniques between the fast-ion loss detector and the electron cyclotron emission radiometer.

Numerical simulations of fast ion loss measurements induced by magnetic islands in the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak

A test particle approach, implemented with the Hamiltonian code ORBIT, is used to simulate measurements of fast ion losses induced by magnetic islands in the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak. In particular, the numerical simulations reproduce the toroidal localization of losses and the lost ions pitch angle and energy distribution experimentally measured with the fast ion losses detector (FILD) in the presence of a neoclassical tearing mode (NTM). The simulated NTM induced losses occurring on time scales longer than 100 µs are composed of mainly trapped or barely passing particles, consistently with the slow decay of the experimental signal from one FILD channel after the beam switch-off. The numerical simulations have been performed by taking into account the D-shaped plasma geometry, the collision mechanisms, the losses due to ripple effects and the rotation of the mode. The radial profile of the magnetic perturbation is adjusted in order to match ECE measurements. While statistical properties of FILD measurements are rather well reproduced, the simulated total amount of losses is found to be significantly affected by edge details of the magnetic perturbation as it determines the loss mechanism.
