The Impact of Social Networking Sites on the Family Cohesion of Algerian Society: Risks and Pros

Objective: Therefore, the aim of this study is to assess the impact of SNS on family closeness in the Algerian culture while looking at the benefits in addition to the drawbacks of using the technology. Theoretical Framework: Applying Social Capital Theory, Family Systems Theory, and Uses and Gratifications Theory allows the research to explain the connection between SNS and family cohesion and give a coherent concept of how the media affects family bonds. Method: A cross-sectional survey and qualitative interviews were used as main data collection tools from the families of different SES in Algeria; social networking usage patterns were also quantitatively measured by coded questionnaires and a qualitative approach was employed to explore the family dynamics and modes of communication. Results & Discussion: This study revealed bi-directional relationship between SNS and family connectedness ; and, the following are the majority observation : Nevertheless, some families had lesser amounts of direct confrontation and roadside fights. The findings are elaborated in regard to theoretical frameworks. Research Implications: This research emphasizes on family therapy, counseling and education, and use of internet by families. It prescribes SNS usage as a means for a healthy functioning of families. Originality/Value: This work aims at giving a cultural angle to the effects of social networking sites (SNS) on family integration in Algeria while serving to substantiate the prior research on digitisation counterpoint in the area of relationship communication.

Study on the Changes of Family Intergenerational Communication Mode in China from the Perspective of Social Media

This study explored the influence of social media on the intergenerational communication mode of China family through various methods, and found that social media improved the convenience and diversity of communication and promoted the interaction of family members of different ages. It breaks the limitations of traditional communication methods, provides a variety of communication forms, makes information transmission more intuitive and fast, and strengthens family cohesion. The functions of social media, such as group chat and sharing, enable family members to keep in touch anytime and anywhere, especially among teenagers and young people. However, the popularity of social media has also brought about problems such as digital divide, privacy leakage and over-reliance on online communication. Therefore, family members need to improve their social media literacy and balance online and offline communication to promote healthy and harmonious family relationships. Generally speaking, the application of social media in China's families has changed the traditional communication mode and had a far-reaching impact on the development of family relations.

“We Hold Culture in Our Hearts”: A Phenomenological Study of Hispanic/Latina Homeschool Experiences

ABSTRACT Although one of the fastest-growing homeschool subgroups, there are no empirical studies specifically considering Hispanic/Latino/a/x/e homeschool families. This study asks Hispanic and Latina parents to describe what homeschooling means to them. Using phenomenology, intersectionality, and community cultural wealth, we interviewed 18 mothers across the nation. We find that preservation or reclamation of cultural heritage is the most meaningful result of the decision to homeschool. Specific aspects of culture found are family cohesion, familial language, and living the values of a strong work ethic and the need to be resourceful. Implications for policy, practice, and research are discussed.

Examining traditional methods of handling domestic violence in a Southeastern Nigerian state: the imperative for social workers’ involvement

ABSTRACT This study investigates the conventional methods used to combat domestic violence within cultural contexts in a local council in Nigeria’s Southeastern state. The study aims first to promote the use of traditional methods of resolving domestic violence that aim at ensuring family unity and second, the need for social workers’ engagement in conventional means of resolving domestic violence. A qualitative study methodology was employed, using in-depth interviews to elicit data from twelve adult Nigerians residing in a local council of a southeastern state. Thematic analysis was adopted to analyze the data. The study discovered significant factors, including poverty, anger, and patriarchal structures, as predictors of domestic violence with substantial repercussions on family cohesion and the mental health of those affected. The findings revealed that people in the study area are well-versed in traditional methods for handling domestic violence, with family elders and traditional and religious leaders playing a crucial role. The study reveals that people are unaware of social work professionals’ involvement in domestic violence management, mainly due to the relatively new and emerging nature of formal social work practice. We suggest the inclusion of social workers for effective and efficient use of traditional approaches in handling domestic violence. Their engagement becomes essential in propagating awareness about better system trust to encourage the use of conventional methods to ensure family protection, preservation, and reunification, unlike the formal legal system. The study, however, indicated that effective collaboration among social workers, policymakers, and community stakeholders is essential to develop comprehensive policies that effectively tackle the issue of domestic violence. Overall, the study recommends a collaborative effort by social workers and community stakeholders to develop strategies and identify adequate linkages to prevent possible social injustice resulting from patriarchal norms within the cultural context that may affect their intervention.

Levekår, emosjonelle plager, resiliens og foreldrestress – en kartlegging av flyktningfamilier fra Ukraina

The integration program in Norway is mandatory and offered by all municipalities to newly arrived refugees. The program offers education-oriented activities on Norwegian society, including mandatory parent programs. In 2023, a decision was made to allow municipalities to shorten this element for families from Ukraine, due to capacity constraints. To make informed adjustments, the municipalities need more information about the needs of parents from Ukraine. This article aims to provide knowledge that can help decision-makers plan and implement further adaptations of social and health services. The participants were families with children aged 6-12 from seven municipalities. They answered an electronic questionnaire that included questions on the Hopkins Symptom Checklist (short version), the Resilience Scale for Adolescents, and the Parenting Stress Index (short version). Our study reveals that refugees from Ukraine are a vulnerable group with significantly low economic living conditions, and 26 % of the sample reported symptoms of anxiety and depression. Despite this, parents demonstrated resilience through their social resources, family cohesion, and low levels of parental stress. However, it is important to note that mental health issues and increased parental stress may emerge after a certain period following flight and settlement in Norway, and poor financial conditions can exacerbate these concerns. Exploring the impact of family support and its function on high-risk behaviour among adolescents in Malang City, East Java, Indonesia: A cross sectional study

This study aims to investigate the impact of family support and family function on high-risk behavior among adolescents in Malang City, East Java, Indonesia using Cross-sectional study design. in Malang City, East Java, Indonesia using cross-sectional study design. The sample size consisted of 195 adolescents (aged 15 to 19) with various sociodemographic characteristics, as well as various types of risky behaviors, such as smoking, consuming alcohol, and so on. and so on. The results of the study indicate that perceptions of and family functions are significantly related to the level of adolescent involvement in high-risk behavior. Adolescents who perceive strong family support and cohesive family functioning are significantly less likely to engage in high-risk behavior. Significance test of the model, variable value of the Sig, which is 0.000, which means that the model has an independent variable that statistically significantly affects the dependent variable because the P-value <α; (0.000 <0.05). Family function is a variable that has a value of 0.000 so that it is related to the dependent variable and has a CI value of 95% (0.029-0.348) significantly less likely to engage in high-risk behavior. In addition, gender, age, and other sociodemographic factors also play a role in determining high-risk behavior. These findings underline the important role of the family in shaping adolescent behavior and emphasize the need for providing appropriate sexual information and education by parents. The implication of this research underscores the significance of parental involvement in providing emotional support, information, and supervision for their children. These parental roles can substantially reduce high-risk behaviors among adolescents.

Family communication and courageous coping in Korean adolescents and young adults: a cross-sectional study.

Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with cancer are a vulnerable population during a critical developmental transition that can benefit from the adoption of courageous coping. Parental support is crucial in enhancing adjustment and coping skills. The linkage between parent-adolescent communication (PAC) and the use of courageous coping (UCC), however, remains unclear. This study examined the association between PAC and UCC and possible mediators of this relationship among Korean AYAs with cancer. In this cross-sectional, correlational study, self-report data were collected from 144 AYAs aged 11-26 years. A path analytic approach was employed using a hierarchical regression model to test for the direct relationship between PAC and UCC and the indirect effects of a proposed primary mediator (family cohesion) and two intermediary mediators (uncertainty of illness, hope) on PAC-UCC relationship. The mean age of the sample was 17 years (SD = 3.8), with 42% currently receiving cancer treatment. Greater PAC was significantly associated with increased UCC (mother figure: p = .0024, father figure: p = .0042). Increased family cohesion significantly mediated the PAC-UCC relationship, indicated by a diminished PAC-UCC relationship after controlling for family cohesion (mother: p = .2753; father: p = .8107). Mediated mediation models indicated that increased hope stemming from decreased uncertainty was the mechanism through which family cohesion impacted the PAC-UCC relationship. Findings underscore that greater PAC can facilitate UCC among Korean AYAs with cancer and provide insights for therapeutic parent-child communication. Results further demonstrate the complex mediating role of fostering family cohesion, reducing uncertainty, and fostering hope can play in the PAC-UCC relationship.

The impact of gastroesophageal reflux disease on the quality of life of children and adolescents in the Republic of Tyva

Aim of the study was to investigate quality of life indicators in children and adolescents with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in the Mongoloid and Caucasian populations of the Republic of Tyva. Material and Methods. Schoolchildren aged 7–18 years of the indigenous (25 Mongoloids – Tuvans with GERD and 354 practically healthy) and newcomers population Republic of Tyva (5 Caucasians with GERD and 158 practically healthy) were examined using a cross-sectional method. Gastroenterological complaints and demographic information were recorded. To assess the quality of life of children, adapted Russian parent (CHQ-PF28) and child (CHQ-PF45) versions of the Child Health Questionnaire (CHQ) were used. The questionnaire allows you to assess various areas of a child’s life. Results and discussion. A decrease in the quality of life was established in schoolchildren of both ethnic populations in the presence of GERD on a number of scales as assessed by the children themselves and their parents. However, unlike parents, children’s assessments tended to decrease in the “family cohesion” section (p = 0.068), which, to a certain extent, may reflect the presence of intrafamily problems that can have a traumatic effect on the child. According to parents’ assessments, in schoolchildren with GERD in the Caucasian population, the decrease in indicators concerned only the “physical activity” scale (p = 0.039). In the Tuvan population, more extensive deviations were noted ‒ in sections “general health assessment” (p = 0.041), “physical activity” (p = 0.024), “changes in health status” (p = 0.006), “pain/ discomfort” (p = 0.037). According to the assessment of children, Caucasians with GERD did not show a decrease in indicators, and Tuvans with GERD had fewer deviations on the scales than, according to their parents. Conclusions. Tyva schoolchildren with GERD showed a decrease in quality of life indicators, which was more pronounced among Mongoloids - Tuvans, and there were differences in its assessment by the children themselves and their parents.

Implikasi Sorong Serah Aji Krame dalam Mempererat Hubungan Keluarga di Masyarakat Sasak

This study examines the cultural significance of the Sorong Serah Aji Krame tradition, a Sasak traditional wedding ritual on Lombok Island, Indonesia. This tradition not only represents the transfer of material goods, but also serves as a mechanism to strengthen family cohesion. Through qualitative methods, including in-depth interviews and observations, this study explores how this ritual builds emotional connections, honors elders, and ensures continuity between generations in the Sasak community. The results show that Sorong Serah Aji Krame plays an important role in maintaining social harmony and family solidarity, especially amidst the challenges of modernization.

Risk and protective factors for mental health problems in children and adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic: results of the longitudinal COPSY study

AbstractThe COVID-19 pandemic has had profound effects on the mental health of children and adolescents worldwide, exacerbating existing challenges and introducing new stressors. This paper explores the impact of risk and protective factors on the mental well-being of young individuals during the pandemic. Using data from the German nationwide, population-based, longitudinal COPSY study (n = 2,471, girls: 50.0%, age 7–17 years) spanning nearly three years, this study investigates how factors such as gender, age, parental education, parental depressive symptoms, family cohesion, and social support influence mental health. Mental health problems were assessed using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). Latent growth analysis and structural equation modeling were employed to analyze cross-sectional and longitudinal data collected at five measurement points (initial response rate: 46.8%). Findings revealed that boys and younger children are at a higher risk for mental health problems. Additionally, low parental education, single parenthood, parental burden due to the pandemic and parental depressive symptoms were significantly linked with mental health problems in children. Conversely, personal resources, family cohesion, and social support were associated with less symptoms. Family cohesion additionally buffered against the negative impact of parental depressive symptoms. The study underscores the importance of multi-level interventions that consider individual, familial, and societal factors in promoting positive mental health outcomes among children and adolescents during challenging times. Continued research and collaborative efforts are needed to develop evidence-based strategies for supporting the resilience of young individuals in the face of future adversities.

Research on the Value and Path of Family Art Education-Take Vocal Music Education as an Example

By discussing the application of vocal music education in family art education, this paper reveals the value and diversified implementation path of family art education. Family art education not only helps to improve children's cognitive, emotional and social skills, but also promotes the improvement of parent-child relationship through art forms. On the basis of relevant research at home and abroad, taking vocal music education as an example, we analyze the unique role of family art education and propose a feasible implementation path. The research believes that family art education can cultivate children's artistic literacy, innovation ability, self-confidence and social skills, contribute to the enhancement of family cohesion, and also provide theoretical and practical guidance for the promotion of art education in the family environment.

Family Functioning and Cohesion Scale: Validation of a Short Instrument for the Assessment of Intrafamily Relations.

Most available scales for assessing family relationships are lengthy. Our aim was to develop and validate the Family Functioning and Cohesion Scale (FFCS), a self-reported, short instrument consisting of 14 items. The FFCS was validated through its administration to 481 subjects via an online platform. Cronbach's alpha was 0.85 (ranging from 0.83 to 0.86 if any one item was deleted), signifying high internal consistency. The scale can be considered as a sole factor based on its high consistency, while factor analysis produced three factors corresponding to "communication", "anger/resentment/aggression", and "values and beliefs". The test-retest reliability correlation coefficient was found to be 0.88 at a 2-week interval. Regarding external validity, the correlation coefficient of the FFCS with the general functioning subscale of the McMaster Family Assessment Device (FAD) was 0.83. The high measures of consistency, reliability, and validity of the FFCS, combined with its short length, make it a most valuable tool for use by researchers as well as by professionals dealing with families in psychiatry, psychology, social work, or other related fields.

Local Cultural Approach in Navigating Family Conflict: Understanding Cultural Strategies for Human Well-Being

Objective: This study explores the complexities of family conflict within a local cultural framework, focusing on its impacts on physical and mental well-being through mapping its intensity, root causes, and long-term consequences. The study aims to understand how unresolved interpersonal tensions can negatively impact emotional and social health, ultimately affecting harmony and balance within local communities. The approach uses a theoretical framework that underscores the importance of culture-based communication, negotiation skills that respect local norms, and appreciation for diverse perspectives as steps to reduce conflict and promote mental health. This research contextualizes conflict within various local cultural settings, specifically within families influenced by communal and intergenerational values. Through in-depth analysis of the family as the unit of study, variables such as communication and social relationships are examined with an emphasis on unique socio-cultural dynamics. The findings highlight the negative impact of unresolved family conflict on emotional well-being and the stability of social relationships within the family unit. Conflict can disrupt interpersonal dynamics, creating long-term disharmony that undermines family cohesion. These adverse effects underscore the need for systematic, ongoing interventions to support mental health and collective well-being. This study emphasizes the importance of addressing family conflict as a critical component in achieving the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of Good Health and Well-being. Interventions that adopt a local cultural approach—such as effective communication strategies and conflict resolution skills rooted in communal norms—are essential for fostering healthier and more harmonious family environments. By identifying three primary approaches—cultural rehabilitation processes, the development of communication that values local culture, and conflict management skills—the study provides practical insights aligned with global efforts to improve mental health and social well-being in accordance with the SDG framework.

The Transition to Adulthood: A Qualitative Study of Autism Spectrum Disorder From Military and Veteran Parents and Military-Dependent Young Adults.

Given the unique experiences of military service members and their families, military-dependent young adults (18-25 years old) with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their military or veteran families experience unique barriers to accessing quality mental health care during the transition to adulthood. In fact, developing services to address ASD challenges for military families is a burgeoning area of interest for the department of defense. However, there is a limited knowledge on the specific needs of military families as the young adult's transition outside of high school and lose supports. The present study conducted 3 focus groups with 16 military and veteran parents, and 3 focus groups with 10 military-dependent young adults to evaluate the needs of military-dependent young adults (17-25 years old) with ASD and military/veteran parents with a young adult with ASD. Parents reported several key topics, including barriers to services (e.g., permanent change of station, recently moving to a state and lacking awareness of the available resources), defining adulthood in terms working in a cohesive family structure, and therapy recommendations for parents and young adults with ASD transitioning to adulthood. Young adults provided key information, including describing experiences with having a parent in the military, difficulty accessing services during the transition to adulthood, and recommendations on therapy for military-dependent young adults with ASD. Military and veteran families with autistic dependents lack access to important mental-health resources. When developing programs for military families and military-dependent autistic young adults, mental health providers should consider the frequent relocations, lack of access to important transition resources, and common military values. The presence of advocates at military bases should be encouraged to help military families navigate autism services in their local community.

Eating Problems in Young Adults: The Role of Unbalanced Family Cohesion and Difficulties in Emotion Regulation

Strong emotional bonds with the family often result in many positive consequences for human functioning, including emotional regulation and eating patterns. The study aimed to determine the relationship between unbalanced family cohesion, emotion regulation, and eating problems in young adults. A correlation research design was used with a non-probability purposive sampling technique to recruit a sample consisting of 300 university students, 50% men and 50% women, with an age range from 18 to 25 years ( M = 21.60, SD = 1.95) from the four universities of Lahore. Demographic performa, Family Cohesion Scale (FCS), Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS), and Eating Problem Scale (EPS) were used to explore the study variables. Data was analyzed using SPSS 21. Pearson product-moment correlation indicated a significant positive relationship between unbalanced family cohesion, difficulties in emotion regulation, and eating problems. It also revealed that a positive relationship was found among unbalanced family cohesion, difficulties in emotion regulation, and eating problems in young adults. Mediation analysis shows that emotion regulation fully mediates the relationship between unbalanced family cohesion and eating problems in young adults. The findings will help students and family counselors identify risk factors of eating problems and its impact on their transition into marriage life. They will contribute to a deeper understanding of unbalanced family dynamics, difficulties in emotion regulation, and eating problems.

Relationship between Vitality and Characteristics of Coping Strategies in Deviant Adolescents

Adolescence is important in the development and formation of a personality, and the family radically influences the development of a teenager; under the family influence, foundations of intentional behavior, ways of responding to stress, level of vitality and defense mechanisms are laid, and a general direction in the formation of moral concepts and relationships emerges. And all this happens against the background of contradictions in physiological and mental development, spiritual formation. The reasons for the use of psychoactive drugs are varied, and most often chemical dependence is determined by the combined action of various factors and conditions. The purpose of the research work was to study the relationship between family structure and characteristics of the adolescents’ response to stress in undergoing inpatient treatment due to the use of psychoactive substances. The study was conducted on the basis of the Novosibirsk Regional Clinical Narcological Dispensary (teenage department). The main group included 18 young men, age: from 15 to 18 years, with experience of using psychoactive substances from one year to three or more years - “teenage addicts”. The control group, “conditionally healthy”, denying the use of psychoactive substances, was represented by high school students of one of the gymnasiums, 15 young men of the same age group. The following methods were used: the Family Adaptation and Cohesion Scale (FACES-3) questionnaire; Plutchik, Kellerman, Conte questionnaire - Life Style Index (LSI) methodology; questionnaire “Methods of coping behavior” by R. Lazarus and S. Folkman and test of vitality (S. Muddy) adapted by D.A. Leontyev. Results. It was revealed that adolescent addicts differ from adolescents without addictive behavior in the following parameters: low level of family adaptation and family cohesion; Adolescents with addictive behavior differ in their style of responding to difficult life situations: they more often use defenses and coping, which serve the function of regulating negative emotional states associated with unmet needs for communication, self-affirmation, etc., while adolescents without addictive behavior use coping and defense, which main function is to resolve the situation; Adolescents with addictive behavior have a lower level of resilience than relatively healthy adolescents. The possibilities of psychotherapeutic influences are discussed.

Self-Attainment or Self-Delusion? A Study of Eugene O’neill’s Long Day’s Journey into Night

This paper sets out to prove that characters in Eugene O’Neill’s Long Day’s Journey into Night assert themselves, and in the process, disintegrate the family and disrupt social cohesion. It is based on the assumption that O’Neill’s characters in this play cannot attain the self without family and societal disintegration. It seems that self-fulfilment and family/social cohesion cannot be achieved simultaneously these characters tend to pay attention to one of these values at a time. Individual frustration precedes instability in the family and societal relationships. The theories adopted as appropriate tools for this paper are Psychoanalytical theory and Deconstruction. This choice is guided by the major preoccupation in the paper. Psychoanalysis helps in analyzing the psychical state of characters in the play before, during, and after the quest. Meanwhile, Deconstruction facilitates the examination of the indeterminacy of the characters’ quest for the self in O’Neill’s Long Day’s Journey into Night. One of O’Neill’s major concerns is human relationships, especially marriage, and the challenges that usually characterize these relationships. Characters’ quest to assert themselves while, intentionally or not, ignoring their family and social responsibilities leads to individualism and self-destruction. O’Neill advocates the harmonization of self questing with unity in the family and social cohesion if self-fulfilment will be achieved.

Family burden and psychological distress among Chinese caregivers of elderly people with dementia: a moderated mediation model

BackgroundAlthough the Stress-Coping Model (SCM) has been widely used to explain the coping process of individuals facing stressful situations, its applicability to caregivers of elderly people with dementia (PwD) in China needs to be further investigated. Furthermore, the role of external resources in caregivers stress coping is not yet clear. Therefore, our study aimed to investigated the mediating and moderating mechanisms between family burden and psychological distress in PwD caregivers based on the SCM.MethodsA cross-sectional study, with 193 pairs of PwD and caregivers completed the self-designed questionnaire, Family Burden Scale of Disease, Kessler Psychological Distress Scale, General Self-Efficacy Scale, Simplified Coping Style Question, The Family Adaptation and Cohesion Evaluation Scales II-CV and Social Support Rating Scale. Partial least squares-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) analyzed the mediating and moderating effects.ResultsFamily burden positively correlated with psychological distress; the chain mediation effects of self-efficacy and positive coping between family burden and psychological distress was significant; the interaction term (family function_positive coping) did not but (social support_positive coping) had a significant positive impact on psychological distress.ConclusionsThe findings provides a practical basis for the use of SCM in informal caregivers of elderly PwD, assists understanding the mechanism of the relationship between family burden and psychological distress. And it supplies new perspectives for reducing the negative psychological health status and a theoretical basis for designing interventions for caregivers.

How parenting styles affect the development of language skills and reading comprehension in primary school students.

This study examined how parenting styles influence children's language skills and reading comprehension. Six hundred and eighty-five Chinese-speaking third graders (Mage = 9.23 years, SD = .66; 341 girls) were randomly recruited from eight primary schools. We measured students' primary caregivers' parenting styles, parental education, family income, migration status, number of children's extracurricular books in the home and family cohesion at Wave 1 (i.e. grade 3). We also assessed students' reading motivation, language skills (i.e. vocabulary knowledge and syntactic awareness) and reading comprehension at Wave 2 (i.e. grade 4). The structural equation model analysis revealed that parenting styles indirectly affect language and reading comprehension development, with authoritative and authoritarian parenting exerting different influences on the two outcomes. Specifically, authoritative parenting was positively related to the number of children's books, which in turn was directly, or indirectly through reading motivation, associated with children's language skills and reading comprehension. In contrast, authoritarian parenting was negatively related to family cohesion, which was associated with children's reading motivation, and consequently, their language skills and reading comprehension. The multigroup analysis showed that the indirect pathways varied slightly across parental migration statuses. These findings enhance the global understanding of the pathways linking parenting styles to children's language skills and reading comprehension, suggesting that educators and researchers should not overly emphasize the direct role of parenting styles in children's academic performance.

Family cohesion moderates the inverted U-shaped curve between resting RSA and children’s empathy

Resting respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) and family cohesion may jointly influence children’s empathy. Resting RSA has been found to exhibit an inverted U-shaped relation with empathy, and family cohesion is a psychosocial correlate of children’s empathy that may moderate this relation. The present study recruited 182 first-grade children as participants (87 girls, Mage = 7.02, SDage = 0.36). Parents completed questionnaires to assess family cohesion and children’s empathy. The SOMNOtouch RESP device was utilized to collect resting electrocardiogram data and calculate resting RSA. The results showed that family cohesion significantly moderated the inverted U-shaped curve between resting RSA and children’s empathy. High family cohesion served as a protective factor in mitigating the negative impact of high resting RSA on empathy but could not buffer the negative effect of extremely low resting RSA on empathy among children. The findings suggest a role for high family cohesion in promoting empathy in children with moderate to high resting RSA.
