Increase in dairy production of goats with subclinical nematode infection using injectable eprinomectin

The effect of the treatment with an injectable product containing eprinomectin on milk yield, milk composition, and somatic cell count (SCC) was investigated in naturally infected dairy goats with low gastrointestinal nematode faecal egg and pulmonary larval counts. The study involved 394 lactating goats and was conducted on a farm in southern Spain. Before treatment, faeces from all animals were analysed to establish two homogeneous groups according to the gastrointestinal nematode egg counts (185 treated and 209 untreated). On day 0, each goat in the treatment group received a single subcutaneous injection of 12 mg of eprinomectin (0.6 ml of Eprecis®, CEVA, Spain). The control goats were left untreated. Faecal egg counts and coprocultures were performed on days 0, 30, 60, and 90 post-treatment. Milk samples were taken on days 0, 30, 60, 90, and 120 and analysed to determine individual production and milk composition parameters, including fat (F), protein (P), lactose (L), total dry extract (TDE), and SCC. Examination of faecal samples indicated that the goats were mainly infected with gastrointestinal strongylids of the genera Teladorsagia and Trichostrongylus and Muellerius lungworms. The percentage reduction of gastrointestinal nematode faecal egg counts on days 30, 60, and 90 was 97.55 % (90 % CI = 95.1 % - 99.9 %), 90.65 % (90 % CI = 83.7 % - 97.6 %) and 87.5 % (90 % CI = 79.5 % - 95.5 %), respectively, and that of lung larval counts in faeces was 98.48 % (90 % CI = 96.3 % - 100 %), 96.91 % (90 % CI = 84.2 % - 98.9 %), and 82.05 % (90 % CI = 66.9 % - 97.2 %), respectively. Milk yield was consistently and significantly higher in the treated group than in the control group (p = 0.004). The treated goats showed a 4 % increase in daily milk yield (60 ml/day) compared with the untreated goats. There was a significant decrease in F and TDE in the treated goats compared with the untreated goats, but eprinomectin did not affect P, L, and SCC. The estimated economic benefit of using injectable eprinomectin was around 6.46€ per goat over the 120-day period. In conclusion, treatment with injectable eprinomectin has an economical positive effect on milk yield in goats, even those infected with a low burden of gastrointestinal and pulmonary nematodes.

First Genotyping of Mycobacterium avium Subspecies Paratuberculosis from Large Ruminant Population at Satna District in Madhya Pradesh in India to Bison Type

Background: Paratuberculosis or Johne’s disease in large ruminants is caused due to Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis. The bacterial disease in large ruminants is characterized by chronic diarrhea, weakness and emaciation. There are no reports on Paratuberculosis in this area’s large ruminant population and its genotyping. Methods: A total of 76 samples (26 fecal and 50 milk) of large ruminants from Satna district in Madhya Pradesh were investigated (microscopical; for the presence of acid-fast organisms and molecular methods; for gene-specific amplification) for the presence of Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis infection. Result: Microscopical examinations of fecal samples revealed 11.54% positivity and milk samples 14% positivity of Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis infection. A single fecal and 2 milk samples were found positive in the IS900 polymerase chain reaction test (413 bp product). Specific amplification of 608 bp IS1311 product followed by restriction endonuclease analysis proved the genotype of Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis as Bison type.

A prevalence study on gastrointestinal parasitic infections of pig (Sus scrofa) in and around Meerut, Western Uttar Pradesh, India.

The present study was conducted to record the prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites of pigs by faecal sample examination. Faecal samples were collected in three different seasons viz; monsoon, post monsoon and pre monsoon, from in and around Meerut district of Western Uttar Pradesh. A total of 642 faecal samples were collected for a period of one year (2020-21). The overall prevalence rate recorded for gastrointestinal parasites in pigs was 64.4%.The findings of the present work showed that seasons have a significant role on the prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites infection in pigs, with highest prevalence in monsoon (78.34%) followed by pre-monsoon (60.19%) and lowest in post- monsoon seasons (54.67%). Thus, the present study will be helpful in designing the effective control strategy of parasitic infections for optimum production in porcine industry as well as preventive measures against zoonotic diseases spread by pigs.

Helminths of captive and free-ranging populations of the mountain gazelle (Gazella gazella): Evidence from faecal examination.

Understanding parasite diversity in wild and captive animal populations has critical implications for both individual animal health and ecosystem dynamics in a broader sense. In mountain gazelles (Gazella gazella), the gastrointestinal helminth community is poorly understood, limiting our efforts in the conservation of this endangered bovid species. This species has only two remaining populations in the world, including the isolated northernmost population in Türkiye. To identify and compare the diversity and prevalence of gastrointestinal helminths in captive and free-ranging populations of mountain gazelles in Hatay, Türkiye, and to assess potential zoonotic risks. In total, 105 fresh faecal samples, 45 individual samples and 60 faecal samples, representing 16 pools, from both captive and free-ranging populations were collected and analysed using Fulleborn flotation, Benedek sedimentation and Bearman-Wetzel methods faecal flotation methods, including the McMaster technique to determine the severity of infection. We detected 12 helminth taxa in our examination of faecal samples, including gastrointestinal nematodes, lungworms and trematodes. Parasites from the Trichostrongyloidea family demonstrated variable hatching stages and rates, potentially influenced by ambient conditions. We also detected one protozoan among the samples. Our results revealed a higher diversity of parasites in free-ranging populations compared to captive ones. This study underscores the necessity for regular parasitological surveillance in both captive and free-ranging wildlife populations for effective conservation management. It also contributes to the 'One Health' perspective by highlighting the potential zoonotic risks posed by parasites in wild ruminants. Our results have implications for the conservation and management of the mountain gazelle.

Calicophoron daubneyi (Paramphistomidae) in deer of the Šumava National Park, Czech Republic – Consequence of prevalent rumen fluke infection in cattle

A substantial parallel increase in prevalence and geographical spread of the rumen fluke, Calicophoron daubneyi, in livestock in western and central Europe has been recognized in the recent past.In the course of the examination of rectum feces of 471 red deer (Cervus elaphus) and one sika deer (Cervus nippon) from the Fascioloides magna endemic Šumava National Park in the years 2021 and 2022, rumen fluke eggs were detected in four red deer (0.8%) and the sika deer and identified as eggs of C. daubneyi by molecular analysis. Subsequent examination of rectal fecal samples of 247 beef cattle from 22 herds of 14 farms located in or nearby the national park revealed rumen fluke eggs in 53 samples (21.5%) originating from 16 herds of 11 farms, molecularly identified as C. daubneyi eggs as well. One C. daubneyi egg positive red deer and three C. daubneyi egg positive cattle samples also contained fasciolid eggs, respectively, which were detected in 9.5% or 3.6% of the total samples from red deer or cattle, respectively.Results of this investigation reveal the first finding of C. daubneyi in sika deer worldwide and in red deer in mainland Europe and add to the growing number of reports on C. daubneyi in livestock in Europe. Considering that the ratio of cattle excreting rumen fluke eggs exceeded that of deer substantially, it can reasonably be assumed that the C. daubneyi infections in deer are a consequence of the prevalent infection in cattle, illustrating a pathogen spillover event from livestock into wildlife.

Therapeutic management to concurrent infection of Haemoproteus columbae and Trichomonas spp. in domestic rock pigeons

Two domestic rock pigeons were presented to Veterinary Clinical Complex, VC & RI, Orathanadu, TANUVAS with the history of circling, rotating its head, complete inappetence and regurgitation. On clinical examination bird appeared dull, depressed and circling of head appreciated and also noticed the presence of Pseudolynchia canariensis. Blood smear examination revealed a characteristic halter shaped gametocytes of Haemoproteus columbae encircling the nucleus of erythrocytes and the crop fluid examination revealed the presence of Trichomonas gallinae. Faecal sample examination revealed the absence of intestinal parasites. The birds were treated with oral Chloroquine @5mg/kg body weight and Metronidazole @50 mg as total dose along with the multivitamin supplementation. The whole flock in the house hold were treated with Permethrin (0.25%) spray by external application to control vector population. After five days of the treatment the clinical condition of the birds were reviewed which showed complete recovery without any complications.

Prevalence of gastrointestinal parasitism in pigs of Tripura, India.

Pigs breeds are an important livestock species mostly reared by economically lower incomesection of people in India. Within North-Eastern (NE) states, pig husbandry is very much popular hence maintain the livelihood of the rural native population. Gastrointentinal (GI) parasitic infectionisone of the major constraint in profitable pig production in this area. In the present study, the GI parasitism was investigated in 388 pigs in the three districts of Tripura, NE State of India. The examination of faecal samples revealed 61.65% overall prevalence of parasitic infestation, precisely6 GI parasitic species; including 4 nematodes and 2 protozoa, while 46.91% were the mixed infections.Metastrongylus spp. (17.53%), Strongyloids spp. (19.33%),Trichuris spp. (15.98%), Coccidia spp. (12.37%), and Balantidium coli (10.82%), were detected, however, Ascaris spp. was the most prevalentrecording 32.47%. The epidemiological factors including: age, sex, season, breed, area and farming system wise when considered as markers of study showed the highest prevalence of GI parasites in grower(6-12months) stage, female, monsoon season, non-descript breeds, Khowai district and free range farming system, recorded 71.52%, 67.27%, 65.78%, 65.71%, 64.57%, and 69.44%, respectively. Overall, our study provides a baseline data for further investigation and formulation of strategies for control of GI parasitism in pigs in Tripura.

A cross-sectional study to quantify the prevalence of Toxocara canis in dogs in the Central Highlands of Vietnam.

Toxocara canis is a globally distributed zoonotic parasite. The parasite has recently become a concern for public health in Vietnam. This cross-sectional study aimed to identify and quantify the risk factors associated with T. canis infection in dogs in Dak Lak province in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. The risk factors were identified using a mixed-effects logistic regression model and quantified using population attributable fractions. Examination of fecal samples collected from 1455 dogs using the sodium nitrate flotation technique showed 37.32% (95% CI: 34.83-39.86) of dogs infected with T. canis. The factors, including study location, multiple dogs living in a household, dog age, dog breed, and places keeping dogs were associated with a dog's likelihood of being T. canis infection. The household and individual dog levels contributed 17% and 82%, respectively, to the prevalence of T. canis in dogs. The adjusted population attributable fraction for confining dogs and raising an individual dog per household was 52% and 27%, respectively. The result of this study indicated that to minimize the burden of T. canis, intervention measures should target individual dogs and household levels.

RARE CASE OF ASCARIASIS DETECTED BY COLONOSCOPY ON THE BACKGROUND OF ELEVATED LEVELS OF FECAL CALPROTECTIN

Introduction: The causative agents of ascariasis in humans are two species: Ascaris lumbricoides and Ascaris suum. For diagnosis, a fecal sample is most often examined. In some cases, the parasite can be identified when coming out with the intestinal passage, and very rarely up on colonoscopy. Aim to present a rare case of ascariasis where the diagnosis was made by colonoscopy on the background of elevated levels of fecal calprotectin (f-CP). Case presentation: A colonoscopy was performed on a 52-year-old female patient due to elevated f-CP. The patient had no complaints. The colonoscopy did not detect pathological changes of the intestinal mucosa, but documented larval stages of Ascaris spp. freely moving in the lumen of the large intestine. The patient was treated with albendazole. Subsequent parasitological examinations of fecal samples were negative. Discussion: In developed countries, the transmission of Ascaris lumbricoides is greatly reduced. On the background of a very limited transmission of Ascaris lumbricoides, many authors consider that most of the sporadic cases of ascariasis are due to Ascaris suum. In the case described by us, the f-CP levels normalized after the treatment, and for this reason, we cannot categorically reject the relationship between Ascaris infection and elevated f-CP levels. Conclusion: The presented clinical case is of interest due to the unusual way of diagnosi ascariasis. In the absence of clinical symptoms, and pathological changes of blood and biochemical parameters, except for elevated fecal calprotectin, inflammatory colon disease was suspected and was colonoscopy performed on this occasion.

Complete genomes of Clostridium botulinum type B(F) isolates associated with a 1995 foodborne botulism outbreak from commercial pâté reveals a recombination event disrupting the ntnh gene.

Foodborne botulism is a neuroparalytic disease caused by ingestion of foods contaminated with botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT), produced by Clostridium botulinum. In 1995 a husband and wife from Québec, Canada, were hospitalized for several months with prolonged muscle paralysis after ingesting a commercial pâté de campagne. Examination of faecal samples from both patients and the pâté produced viable Group I (proteolytic) C. botulinum type B from each of the three samples. Whole genome sequencing revealed that all three isolates contain identical bont/B5 and bont/F2 genes encoded on a plasmid. Both faecal isolate genomes were identical in chromosome and plasmid length, as well as gene content. The genome of the pâté isolate was nearly identical to that of the faecal isolates with the notable difference of a missing 13-gene insertion on the bont/B5 cluster disrupting the ntnh gene. Examination of the insertion revealed several mobile genetic elements that participate in recombination.

Overview of Worm Infections and Hemoglobin Levels in Children Living in TPA (Final Waste Disposal Site) Tamangapa Makassar, Indonesia

Introduction: Children who live around TPA Tamangapa often play and do activities around the TPA. This can increase their risk of being exposed to worm eggs or larvae in the garbage. Lack of public knowledge and awareness about the dangers of worm infections. Hemoglobin (Hb) levels are an indicator of a child's nutritional status. This study aims to present an overview of worm infections and hemoglobin levels in children living in TPA (final waste disposal site) Tamangapa Makassar, Indonesia.
 Methods: This study is a descriptive observational research. This study uses primary data from observations of research subjects. A total of 10 research subjects participated in this study.
 Results: The results of microscopic examination of fecal samples showed that 6 were positive for worm infections and 4 were negative for worm infections. The positive results were found to be intestinal nematodes, namely Ascaris lumbricoides and Tricuris trichiura. Examination of hemoglobin levels in blood samples with the results obtained were normal in all samples.
 Conclusion: The majority of subjects experienced worm infections with the worm species found being A. lumbricoides and T. trichiura. All samples showed blood hemoglobin levels within normal limits.

In Vivo Anthelmintic Efficacy of Adansonia digitata and Anogeissus leiocarpa against Haemonchus contortus Infestation Induced in Sheep.

The aim of the present study was to assay the in vivo anthelminthic activity of Anogeissus leiocarpa (Al) family of the Asteraceae and Adansonia digitata (Ad) family of Malvaceae leaf powder against the nematode Haemonchus contortus (Hc) in sheep. Twenty-eight sheep were artificially infected with 3000 Infective larvae (L3) of Hc and divided into four groups. Groups 1 and 2 received 3.2 g/kg of Ad and Al leaf powder according to the body weight for three days by oral route. This treatment was repeated after 14 days. Group 3 received albendazol 5 mg/kg and group 4 received water. The treatment was repeated 14 days later. Examination of faecal samples, packed cell volume and biochemical analyses and necropsy were carried out to determine egg counts, worm burdens, and reduction in worm fecundity and changes in blood parameters. The results showed a reduction in egg excretion of 72.22% and 88.49%, respectively, with Al and Ad leaf powder. Egg laying of adult female worms was reduced by 55.22% and 64.96% with Ad and Al, respectively. FAMACHA score (≤2 in the treated animals) and packed cell volume were improved with Ad and Al. The results of this study revealed that Ad and Al powder may be used as an alternative anthelminthic to control haemonchosis in small ruminants.

Exploring gut-lung axis crosstalk in SARS-CoV-2 infection: Insights from a hACE2 mouse model.

Based on the forefront of clinical research, there is a growing recognition that the gut microbiota, which plays a pivotal role in shaping both the innate and adaptive immune systems, may significantly contribute to the pathogenesis of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Although an association between altered gut microbiota and COVID-19 pathogenesis has been established, the causative mechanisms remain incompletely understood. Additionally, the validation of the precise functional alterations within the gut microbiota relevant to COVID-19 pathogenesis has been limited by a scarcity of suitable animal experimental models. In the present investigation, we employed a newly developed humanized ACE2 knock-in (hACE2-KI) mouse model, capable of recapitulating critical aspects of pulmonary and intestinal infection, to explore the modifications in the gut microbiota following severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. Examination of fecal samples using 16S rRNA gene profiling unveiled a notable reduction in species richness and conspicuous alterations in microbiota composition at 6 days postinfection (dpi). These alterations were primarily characterized by a decline in beneficial bacterial species and an escalation in certain opportunistic pathogens. Moreover, our analysis entailed a correlation study between the gut microbiota and plasma cytokine concentrations, revealing the potential involvement of the Lachnospiraceae_NK4A136_group and unclassified_f_Lachnospiraceae genera in attenuating hyperinflammatory responses triggered by the infection. Furthermore, integration of gut microbiota data with RNA-seq analysis results suggested that the increased presence of Staphylococcus in fecal samples may signify the potential for bacterial coinfection in lung tissues via gut translocation. In summary, our hACE2-KI mouse model effectively recapitulated the observed alterations in the gut microbiota during SARS-CoV-2 infection. This model presents a valuable tool for elucidating gut microbiota-targeted strategies aimed at mitigating COVID-19.

Case Report: The Successful Treatment of Toxocariasis in a Domestic Cat using Pyrantel Pamoate

Toxocariasis is an infectious disease caused by Toxocara sp. in cats that lead to deterioration of the condition and can even cause death, especially in kittens. Pyrantel pamoate is an anthelmintic that is currently being abandoned for toxocariasis. The purpose of this paper is to report the success of toxocariasis treatment in a cat using pyrantel pamoate. Female domestic cat, 3 months old, weighing 1.3 kg suffering diarrhea was used in this study. The cat examined including a physical examination, followed by laboratory examination of fecal and blood samples. The results showed the cat's body condition was thin, eye was dirty, anemic mucous membranes, dull hair/loss, and diarrhea with watery stool consistency. The cat examination revealed the presence of Toxocara sp. egg as much as 2,400 EPG in fecal sample, and the results of blood tests found that the cat had normochromic normocytic anemia. The cat was diagnosed toxocariasis with dubious prognosis. A cat treated with kaolin-pectin with 1-2 ml/kg BW orally 2 times a day for 3 days, multivitamin injection at a dose of 0.5 ml intramuscularly, and the anthelmintic pyrantel pamoate at a dose of 20mg/kg BW orally once. After 28 days of treatment, the cat was declared healthy based on better physical conditions, no diarrhea, no worm eggs in the fecal sample, and did not anemia. It concluded that cats with toxocariasis successfully cured by administering the anthelmintic pyrantel pamoate, so this drug is still recommended for the treatment of toxocariasis in cats.

Assessment of The Prevalence and Associated Risk Factors of Gastrointestinal Parasite of Goats in Afgooye District, Lower Shabelle, Somalia

Background: Gastrointestinal parasitic diseases remain an obstacle to goat farmers in Somalia and worldwide. Purpose: This study aimed to determine the prevalence and associated risk factors of gastrointestinal parasites in goats in the Afgooye district, Lower Shabelle region, Somalia. Methods: To fulfill this study, an examination of 384 fecal samples of goats kept by smallholders was conducted. The results were achieved during the period from August 2020 to January 2022. Results: The examination of fecal samples revealed that the overall prevalence of gastrointestinal parasitic infections among goats was 71.61%. The data analysis conducted during the study indicated that there is no significant association (P > 0.05) between goat districts and gastrointestinal (GI) parasite infection. The corresponding percentage of gastrointestinal parasites in males and females was 70% and 72%, respectively. However, these variables were not significantly associated (p-value = 0.399). After categorization, age was not significantly associated with the parasitic infection status of the animal. The common parasitic infections prevalent were Nematode, Trematode, Cestode, and Protozoa types were found in different numbers. According to the flotation and sedimentation techniques, Eimeria sp. (29%) was found with higher prevalence followed by Haemonchus sp. (23%), Trichostrongylus sp. (11%), Moniezia sp. (10%), Trichuris sp. (9%), Strongyloides sp. (7%), Dictyocaulus sp. (5.2%), Nematodirus (4%), and least was Fasciola sp. (1.0%). Conclusion: This study provides comprehensive documentation on multiple GI parasites among goats in the Afgooye district, Lower Shabelle region of South-western State, Somalia, and the findings are crucial for effective farm management, especially for formulating the effective GI parasitic control vis-a-vis novel elimination strategies.

Prevalence Of Helmint Infection In Cat’s Feces In Surabaya City

Cats are one of the most popular animals because of their cute and tame appearance. Just like other organism, cats can become infected worms if they are not kept clean. Cats infected with worms will initially lose their appetite, over time they will lose weight. Cats infected with worms, if kept and not treated continuously, can transmit to cat owners (humans). This study aims to determine the prevalence of parasitic worm infection in cat feces in the city of Surabaya, and to compare the prevalence of parasitic worm infection in domesticated cats with cats living wild in the city of Surabaya. The samples used in this study were 100 faecal samples, which were taken from 50 cats that live in the wild and from 50 live cats that are kept. Examination of faecal samples was carried out directly and indirectly using the saturated NaCl debris method, the data obtained will be presented descriptively and analyzed using the Chi-square test. Based on the results of the research conducted, the prevalence of worm infection in feral cat feces was 60%, while in domestic cats the prevalence was 10%. The types of worms that were found were Toxocara spp., Ancylostoma spp., Diphyllobothrium spp., and Trichuris spp. Based on the Chi-square test, it can be concluded that there is a significant relationship (P<0.05) between the prevalence of parasitic worm infection in domesticated cats and cats that live in the wild.

Routine microscopy examination of faecal samples as a tool for detection of common gastrointestinal parasites: a preliminary report from two Hungarian farms

Gastrointestinal parasitism in ruminant animals is a cause of major economic loss incurred by the livestock industry. Regardless of the frequency of the adopted therapeutic and prophylactic deworming strategies, the parasitic burden in a farm should be assessed regularly. One of the most widely used techniques to do so is the microscopic faecal egg examination and faecal egg counting method. Despite the technique being almost a century old from its first adoption, the principle behind the newer techniques of faecal egg examination is the same. This technique is still being used in routine farm screening and monitoring gastrointestinal parasitic load and faecal egg count reduction testing to assess the anthelmintic efficacy of the drugs used. Thus, the tool remains a choice for preliminary screening for important parasites and the subsequent deworming strategy. Our study here was part of a larger survey on the treatment efficiency as well as a broad epidemiological study of the trichostrongyle parasites in Hungary. We present a preliminary report on the detection of common gastrointestinal parasites from two farms in Hungary, including a species-specific confirmatory microscopy for Haemonchus contortus eggs.

Intestinal parasite infections among internal war refugees and inhabitants of the Ternopil region, Western Ukraine.

The armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine resulted in the destruction of the country's infrastructure and a decline in the standard of living for many citizens (e.g. shortages of electricity and safe drinking water, limited access to healthcare, living in unsuitable cold basements). A lot of Ukrainians living in the eastern, southern and central parts of the country were forced to flee their homes. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of intestinal parasite infections among internal war refugees and residents of Ternopil, a city in Western Ukraine, in response to the worsening of the epidemiological situation in the country. Parasitological diagnostics was carried out in June 2023 and involved 127 adult Ukrainian citizens aged 19-80 years old, including 80 internal war refugees (most of the participants came from Donetsk, Luhansk, Dnipro, Kherson regions) and 47 residents of Ternopil region, Western Ukraine. Surveys and parasitological examination of stool samples by three different light microscopy testing methods (direct smear, decantation, flotation) were performed. The samples were then tested for the presence of Giardia intestinalis intestinal protozoa by molecular tests (reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction [RT-PCR]) and immunochromatographic rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs). All RT-PCR and RDT tests to detect Giardia intestinalis were found to be negative. The examination of faecal samples taken from 127 patients showed no infections with nematodes, cestodes or trematodes. The examinations only revealed infections with potentially pathogenic Blastocystis spp.: 18/80 infections in the population of internal war refugees (22.5%) and 7/47 infections among residents of the Ternopil region (14.9%). Survey results demonstrated frequent use of antibiotics and antiparasitic drugs without physician advise or prescription: 43.9% of the study participants (n = 127) were taking antibiotics, and 25.2% were taking antiparasitic drugs during the period of 3 months prior to the study. An absence of intestinal parasite pathogens was detected in the studied population. The authors may explain it by the fact, that many Ukrainian patients have unlimited access to antimicrobial drugs (drugs sold without a valid prescription and taken without consultation with a physician), which could have contributed to the low incidence of intestinal parasite infections.

Helminthiasis Identification on Bengal Tiger (Panthera tigris tigris)

Bengal tiger (Panthera Tigris) is a mammal in the big cat family. The decrease in the Bengal tiger population can be caused by helminth infections. The impact of helminth infection on Bengal tiger in short term does not show any clinical symptoms. The examination was carried out to identify gastrointestinal infections in Bengal tiger (Panthera Tigris) conducted at Maharani Zoo Lamongan, East Java. 5 samples of Bengal tiger feces were used for examination purpose. The examination of fecal samples on Bengal tigers was carried out qualitatively using the native method and the floating method. The results of the examination of 5 Bengal tigers at Maharani Zoo showed 1 positive for Ascarid eggs on native examination and on floating examination showed 2 positive samples for Strongylid eggs and 5 positive samples for Ascarid eggs. The percentage of helminthiasis in the Bengal tigers was 100% positive for helminth infection. The helminth infections at Maharani Zoo could be caused by damp cage, humid and dirty environment, food and water that were contaminated with helminth eggs. The treatment given for the Bengal tigers at Maharani Zoo used  Kalbazen® that contains 1000mg albendazole.

Prevalence and effect of schistosome and soil-transmitted helminth infection on labour input in rice-growing communities of Ogun State, Nigeria

Schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) are public health problems in communities which lack basic social amenities with poor hygienic conditions. Studies were carried out to determine the prevalence and effect of schistosomes and soil-transmitted helminths infection on labour input on rice production in 9 rice-growing communities of Ogun State. Parasitological examinations of urine and faecal samples, and structured questionnaires were conducted on 243 consented individuals from May 2009 to March 2010. The results showed an overall prevalence of 17% for Ascaris lumbricoides, 12% for hookworms, 2% for Trichuris trichiura, 1% for Schistosoma haematobium and 1% for Schistosoma mansoni. A. lumbricoides and hookworms were more prevalent in Agbajege (25%), and varied in the other 8 communities. T. trichiura was prevalent in three communities, Agbajege (5%), Akodu (4.2%), and Moloko-Asipa (4.8 %); S. haematobium was prevalent only in Ayedere (2.6%) and Lufoko (8%), while S. mansoni was prevalent only in Moloko-Asipa (9.5%). Infections among the gender were varied as 26.3 % of males and 33.8 % of females had an overall prevalence of: A. lumbricoides (16.8%), hookworms (11.8%), T. trichiura (1.6%), S. haematobium (1.1%) and S. mansoni (1.1%). On frequency of infection to incapacitation per year, 45% of respondents were incapacitated 1-2 times, 27% 3-4 times and 19% were incapacitated more than 4 times. Understanding the effect of these two diseases will not only improve the health status of residents but also increase their productivity and ensure food security.
