Faculty status: The next generation employment status preferences among millennial LIS students and new librarians at ARL institutions

Stereotypes regarding employees of the so-called millennial generation suggest that they like to change jobs frequently and prefer flexibility to long-term job stability. Library administrators who assume this stereotype to be true may believe (or assert) that faculty status and the opportunity to earn tenure are not as important to millennials as to older librarians. This belief may even lead administrators to eliminate or phase out faculty status for librarians at their institutions, on the assumption that younger librarians would find professional staff positions more appealing because they don't want to work at the same institution for the six or more years that it takes to earn tenure. This study, which specifically explores questions concerning faculty status and the opportunity to earn tenure, examines the job-status preferences of hundreds of new academic librarians at ARL-affiliated institutions and soon-to-be academic librarians currently enrolled in ALA-accredited master's programs in the United States and Canada. The themes that emerge from the results indicate that job security is an especially strong concern for this population of academic librarians and students, that faculty status and the opportunity to earn tenure are associated with perceived job security, and that that this population views academic librarians' work as being equal to that of “regular” faculty members. Moreover, this study finds that millennial status is not correlated with any particular view about faculty status and the opportunity to earn tenure.

Seeking Full Citizenship: A Defense of Tenure Faculty Status for Librarians

Tenure status for library faculty in the academic environment is coming under increasing attack from administration, faculty members in other departments, and non-academics. This is due to incorrect perceptions about what academic librarians do and how they serve their profession. This paper describes the many challenges faculty librarians face in balancing their work load with service and scholarship; justifies why academic librarians need tenure; and ultimately proves that tenure and faculty status for academic librarians are an absolute necessity.

Faculty Status for Librarians in Higher Education

The ACRL Standards for Faculty Status for College and University Librarians state that library faculty should have the same privileges and responsibilities as other faculty on campus. However, some conditions, such as tenure and equitable salaries, are often withheld from library faculty. When faculty status is implemented by ACRL standards, it is associated with better job satisfaction, improved status, higher salaries, and more opportunities for professional development. However, faculty status librarians face pressure to do research, publish, and attend meetings. These responsibilities detract from time spent on traditional librarianship duties and often from personal time as well. In addition, economists believe that faculty status will eventually lead to a decreased demand for librarians because of the diversion of energy away from librarianship. Faculty status for librarians is positively correlated with indicators of student achievement, such as graduation rates and pursuit of graduate-level education. However, it is interesting to note that librarian faculty status is also associated with decreased research output of the institution as a whole.

Collective Bargaining and Faculty Status: A Twenty-Year Case Study of Wayne State University Librarians

Faculty status for librarians has been an increasingly problematic issue in collective bargaining at Wayne State University (WSU) for over twenty years. From the 1970s through the early 1980s, WSU librarians achieved near parity with faculty in compensation, job security, and governance matters. However, incursions on these gains began in 1984, and by 1992 librarians at the university were losing certain salary accomplishments, tenure options, and sabbatical and promotion rights. Documentation of the evolution of these successes and failures reveals the challenges for academic librarians in seeking faculty status through collective bargaining

The Status of Faculty Status for Academic Librarians:A Twenty-Year Perspective (Research Note)

In 1990, data on the employment status of librarians was collected from two groups of academic libraries in higher education-a random sample of all institutions in the United States and all academic members of the Association of Research Libraries. This data provides a twenty-year retrospective of librarians' status and indicates that 67 percent of higher education institutions grant them faculty status. In general, faculty status for librarians has been vigorously expanded during the same period, though the process has slowed in recent years. Understandably, librarians with faculty status evince perquisites similar, but not identical to, teaching faculty

Librarians' Satisfaction With Faculty Status

In 1982 and 1989, librarians with academic faculty status in eight institutions of a large state university system responded to a questionnaire that probed their opinions on faculty status for librarians. A majority of the respondents in both surveys expressed satisfaction with and support for faculty status. The evidence suggests that librarians' satisfaction with faculty status correlates with institutional compliance with the ACRL Standards for Faculty Status for College and University Librarians.
