Determinants of the influence of community participation on the sustainability of local system community-based sanitation programs in Temanggung Regency

Community-based Sanitation (SANIMAS) is an activity to address sanitation problems in Indonesia. 88% of communities in Temanggung Regency dispose of domestic wastewater directly into the river without any prior treatment. As an effort to protect the environment, the SANIMAS program was developed with the Local Domestic Waste Management System (SPALDS). The objective is to identify the relationship between factors influencing community participation and the sustainability of the SANIMAS program. Factors influencing community participation are technological, institutional, financial and economic, socio-cultural, and environmental. Community participation is determined based on the SANIMAS program stages, namely input, process, and output as well as the sustainability of the SANIMAS program. This research uses the quantitative method of Partial Least Squares - Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) with Smart PLS version 3.0. The results of this study indicate that technological, institutional, financial and economic, and socio-cultural factors have a positive effect on community participation and sustainability. Technological, institutional, and socio-cultural factors have a significant effect on community participation and sustainability with T-statistic values 2.659, 2.136, and 2.73 and P-values 0.008, 0.033, and 0.007. These factors affect the positive and significant correlation of community participation to the sustainability of the SANIMAS program.

Socio-Cultural Factors Influencing Community Participation in the Joint Forest Management: A Case of Uzungwa Scarp Nature Forest Reserve, Tanzania

This study emphasizes the critical role of participatory approaches, particularly joint forest management (JFM), in addressing the escalating threat to forests posed by human activities. Focusing on the socio-cultural aspects, the research explores the factors influencing community participation in joint forest management within Tanzania's Uzungwa Scarp Nature Forest Reserve (USNFR), employing the Socio-Ecological System theory to underscore the potential of community-driven resource management. The study employed a cross-sectional research design, collecting data through questionnaires, focus group discussions, and interviews involving 190 respondents from five villages spanning Kilolo, Mufindi, and Mlimba Districts. Quantitative data underwent descriptive statistical analysis, while qualitative data were subjected to thematic analysis. The majority of the respondents were relatively young, likely due to their physical fitness and heightened environmental commitment. Conversely, older individuals were underrepresented, likely due to age-related limitations. Gender imbalances were observed, reflecting deeply ingrained gender-related barriers in societal norms. Education levels varied, with a significant portion having completed primary education, while higher levels of education were less represented. The respondents were predominantly married, indicating a probable tie to family responsibilities. Farming was the main occupation for the majority, highlighting their dependence on forest resources. Effective communication emerged as pivotal during village assemblies and workshops, fostering awareness and empowerment for successful joint forest management. Cultural factors significantly influenced community participation in JFM within the USNFR. Ritual activities, local knowledge, and power dynamics played key roles, creating taboos and restrictions that reinforced cultural ties to conservation, leveraging the influence of community elders. To enhance community involvement, the current influential factors should be preserved and enforced. Also, to ensure tailored conservation training programs, context-specific communication tools, promotion of cultural integration, and ensuring inclusivity in all JFM aspects. Future research should focus on assessing the impact of training programs on forest conservation

IMPLEMENTATION SUSTAINABLE ECOTOURISM CIKOLELET TOURISM VILLAGE

Ecotourism is a sustainable and responsible form of travel that promotes conservation, benefits local communities, and provides travelers with a unique and educational experience in natural environments. Although some tourism researchers have used the MOA model to study factors influencing community participation, there is still a scarcity of literature that can provide sufficient empirical support to prove the MOA model's predictive power for examining community participation in the tourism context. Especially in the context of nature tourism. Seeing this gap, the purpose of this research is to determine the impact of sustainable ecotourism on community participation using the MOA model.. This research was conducted in Cikolelet Tourism Village. There were participants whose information was examined by researchers, namely the head of the Cikolelet Tourism Village Pokdarwis and the Village Head and members of the Pokdarwis. The result show that the prospects to implementing sustainable ecotourism in Cikolelet rural tourism area can develop and promote community participation

Factors influencing Community Participation in Planning and Implementing Agricultural Development Projects: A Case of the Matongoro Cattle auction project in Kongwa district, Tanzania

In Tanzania, different community development projects in various sectors including the agriculture sector have been formulated and implemented following a bottom-up approach. However, in many cases, the impact of such projects has not been significant due to various reasons including poor participation of the targeted population in the process. This study intended to investigate the factors influencing community participation and its levels using the case of the Matongoro cattle auction project. Data were collected from a sample of 150 respondents using respondent questionnaires, key informant interviews, and focus group discussions. Descriptive statistics, which generated percentages and frequencies and a binary logistic regression model were used for data analysis. Study findings show that the dominant narrative on the bottom- approach to enhancing participation; nearly 90% of respondents indicated a low level of participation. The critical factors which were found to significantly influence community participation projects at p>0.05 were income level, number of cattle owned, age, awareness, experience, and sex. The study recommends that the government should design ways to increase local community participation throughout conceptualisation, formulation, and implementation to ensure the success and sustainability of these agricultural projects.

Factors Influencing Community Participation in Internet Interventions Compared With Research Trials: Observational Study in a Nationally Representative Adult Cohort.

Digital mental health (DMH) programs can be effective in treating and preventing mental health problems. However, community engagement with these programs can be poor. Understanding the barriers and enablers of DMH program use may assist in identifying ways to increase the uptake of these programs, which have the potential to provide broad-scale prevention and treatment in the community. In this study, we aimed to identify and compare factors that may influence participation in DMH programs in practice and research trials, identify any respondent characteristics that are associated with these factors, and assess the relationship between intentions to use DMH programs and actual uptake. Australian adults aged ≥18 years were recruited from market research panels to participate in the study. The sample was representative of the Australian adult population based on age, gender, and location. Participants completed a cross-sectional web-based survey assessing demographic characteristics, mental health symptom measures, attitudes and use of DMH programs in practice and in research studies, and the factors influencing their use in both settings. Across both research and practice, trust in the organization delivering the service or trial was the top-ranked factor influencing participation, followed by anonymity or privacy and adequate information. There was little variation in rankings across demographic groups, including intentions to use DMH programs or mental health status. Intentions to use DMH programs were a strong predictor of both current (odds ratio 2.50, 99% CI 1.41-4.43; P<.001) and past (odds ratio 2.98, 99% CI 1.71-5.19; P<.001) use behaviors. Efforts to increase the uptake of DMH programs or participation in research trials should focus on clearly communicating the following to users: the legitimacy of the organization delivering the program, security and use of participant data, and effectiveness of DMH programs.

Enablers and inhibitors of community participation in Ghana’s Community-based Health Planning and Services programme: a qualitative study in the Builsa North Municipality

BackgroundCommunity participation is essential for the successful implementation of primary health care programmes across the globe, including sub-Saharan Africa. The Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) programme is one of the primary health care interventions in Ghana which by design and implementation heavily relies on community participation. However, there is little evidence to establish the factors enabling or inhibiting community participation in the Ghanaian CHPS programme. This study, therefore, explored the enabling and inhibiting factors influencing community participation in the design and implementation of the CHPS programme in the Builsa North Municipality in the Upper East Region of Ghana.MethodsA qualitative approach, using a cross-sectional design, was employed to allow for a detailed in-depth exploration of the enabling and inhibiting factors influencing community participation in the design and implementation of the CHPS programme. The data were collected in January 2020, through key informant interviews with a stratified purposive sample of 106 respondents, selected from the 15 functional CHPS facilities in the Municipality. The data were audio-recorded, transcribed and manually analysed using thematic analysis.ResultsThe results showed that, public education on the CHPS concept, capacity of the community to contribute material resources towards the construction of CHPS facilities, strong and effective community leadership provided by community chiefs and assembly persons, the spirit of volunteerism and trust in the benefits of the CHPS programme were the enablers of community participation in the programme. However, volunteer attrition, competing economic activities, lack of sense of ownership by distant beneficiaries, external contracting of the construction of CHPS facilities and illiteracy constituted the inhibiting factors of community participation in the programme.ConclusionExtensive public education, volunteer incentivization and motivation, and the empowerment of communities to construct their own CHPS compounds are issues that require immediate policy attention to enhance effective community participation in the programme.

There are many ways for young people to get involved with their communities, but Community participation is one of the most important ways. As a way of expressing their commitment, young people form political and social action groups, devise educational initiatives tailored to their interests, and serve as community activists. This study was carried out in Myanmar prior to the military takeover in 2021. A military coup protest was organized by CEC (Chief Executive Committees). In addition, the majority of the committee members advocate for democratic values in this era. For the purpose of this study, researchers looked into which factors had the greatest impact on the participation of youth affairs committee members in their communities. Mon State was chosen as the study site because the median age of the population there is 26.7 years old. The 2014 Census revealed a range of median ages that is lower than this one. It shows that the median age of Mon state's youth affairs committee members is lower than the state's overall median age. In addition, the state of Mon was home to three major ethnicities: the Mon, the Kayan, and the Burmese. This situation demonstrates that young people have settled in Mon state with a wide range of viewpoints and ideas. The 131 members of Mon state's youth affairs committee were selected from each of the state's three levels of youth affairs committee. The data collected was analyzed using linear regression and descriptive methods. It was discovered that the community involvement of young leaders is positively influenced by social, political &amp; legal factors.

Community sentiment influences community participation: evidence from Ethiopia

ABSTRACT Community sentiment is an essential component of community development and can influence residents’ propensity to participate in their community. However, few studies have investigated the effect of community sentiment on community participation in the sub-Saharan region. This study aimed to examine social connectedness, community attachment and community satisfaction as factors influencing community participation among rural residents in Ethiopia. We collected data through a cross-sectional survey from 360 residents of 12 communities located within Yirgachefe district of Ethiopia, using a simple random sampling technique for selection. Descriptive statistics and hierarchical regression techniques were used to analyze the data. The results revealed that community participation was influenced not only by respondents’ demographic and socioeconomic characteristics but also by their community sentiment. Respondents’ age, level of education, annual income, social connectedness, community attachment and community satisfaction all positively influenced community participation. It was noted that respondents who were more socially connected, who have higher levels of attachment to their community and more satisfied with their community are more likely to participate. We suggest community networking mechanisms and social events to augment community participation.

Antecedents and consequences of community-based tourism in border district of Jammu and Kashmir

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to identify the factors influencing community participation in destination building and its consequences for the local inhabitants in the form of social, tourism and economic development.Design/methodology/approachData for this study was collected from 214 questionnaires from residents of different tourist destinations in the Poonch district of J&K. This study used explorative factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling techniques for determining the structural estimates between constructs.FindingsThe results revealed that the personal and economic factors have the most significant impact followed by the social factor and least by the environmental factor upon the local community participation. Moreover, the respondents agreed that destination development has contributed a lot in terms of economic and followed by other two factors.Originality/valueThe study makes a significant theoretical contribution to the community-based tourism literature by portraying the influence of various factors on community participation and its repercussions and, moreover, the study has used the social exchange theory with a different area. Furthermore, the study has made a number of practical implications for the local authority for sustainable tourism as well as community development.

Factors Influencing Community Participation in Forestry Management in Chiradzulu District, Malawi

Community participation in forestry management is a good approach to protecting forests and woodlands. This study was carried out to assess factors affecting community participation in forestry management in Chiradzulu District. The study employed a mixed-method approach where qualitative and quantitative data were collected. Results showed that there is an almost equal percentage of female and male respondents who participated in forestry management. The Logit model analysis shows that education variables are positive and statistically significant proving that education influences participation in forestry management and hence education is an important variable in determining households’ participation in forestry. Only the age group of 45 - 59 years was significant but had a negative coefficient with a moderate marginal effect at 59% (r = 0.59) implying that many people in this age group participated in forestry activities than other age groups. When the size of household land ownership was used as a proxy to indicate household wealth and then correlated with participation in forestry activities, a positive and significant correlation between households that owned 1 - 2 acres and 3 - 5 acres of land and their participation in forestry activities was observed. It can be concluded that the size of land owned is one of the key factors that determine households’ participation in forestry management. Furthermore, a connection between land size distribution and effects on environmental resources was evident.

An Investigation of the Factors Influencing Community Participation in Forest Management: A Case of Balaka District, Malawi

Forests are vital for the environment through the support which they provide to biodiversity. They also provide cultural, social and economic support to human welfare. Forest degradation is attributed to multiple land uses which include agriculture, human settlement, the use of trees as the main source of energy and other infrastructure development. The main objective of the study was to assess factors that influence community participation in forest management in Kangankundi village forest area in Balaka District, Southern Malawi. Simple random sampling was used to select 100 community members who were interviewed in the study. Data were analyzed in SPSS version 22. The results showed positive significant relationship between community awareness and community participation (p = 0.015), and also between economic benefits and community involvement (p = 0.003). Involvement was not affected by income-generating activity which showed that (p = 0.781) and level of education (p = 0.535). Community awareness and economic benefits appear to be the main factors influencing community participation. Firewood and bamboos were noted to be the most resource obtained from the forest and beekeeping was also the income-generating activity in the study which is being promoted. It is concluded that community participation is influenced by many factors. The study recommends that youth must be deliberately involved in forest management as opposed to the current participation which is dominated by elderly people.

This research explains factors (usage of social media, social factors, political &amp; factors) most effect on community participation of youth affairs committee members. This research work was conducted in Myanmar before the Military Coup. The CEC (Chief Executive Committees) members were actively participation in Military coup protest. Moreover, most of the committee members exponent the democratic values to community in this times. The study area was selected Mon State because of the media age of Mon state is 26.7 years. Moreover, there were three major ethnic group – Mon , Kayan and Burma lived in Mon state. This condition shows that youth person settled diverse opinions and thoughts in Mon state. The 131 youth affairs committee members were proportionally selected from each layer of Mon state youth affair committee for collect data. Linear regression and descriptive methods was employed to analyze collected data. It was found that social factors and political &amp; legal factors have positively significant effect on community participation of youth leaders. The policy makers of Mon state should provide the opportunities for youth to engage in community development works.

Factors influencing community participation in the implementation and monitoring of FLEGT-VPA in Ghana

PurposeVoluntary Partnership Agreement (VPA) offers a framework for open and participatory forest management for forest actors, particularly communities fringing forest reserves. This paper aimed to determine the factors influencing the participation of local communities in the implementation and monitoring of Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade-Voluntary Partnership Agreement (FLEGT-VPA) activities.Design/methodology/approachThe study was conducted in three communities in Goaso Forest District in the Ahafo Region of Ghana. Based on a cross-sectional design, 105 (n = 105) community members were interviewed using a semi-structured questionnaire. Logistic regression analysis was performed to identify socio-demographic and cultural factors that influence people's participation in FLEGT-VPA activities. Friedman and Wilcoxon signed-rank tests were conducted to analyse the influence of the environmental role of the forest and participation in FLEGT-VPA activities.FindingsThe study found a significant association between the leadership status of respondents' local customs/taboo days and participation in both implementation and monitoring activities. At the same time, a significant association was found between respondents' participation in previous training programs and FLEGT-VPA monitoring activities. The environmental role of the forest was also found to have a significant association with respondents' participation in FLEGT-VPA activities.Originality/valueStudies on the factors that influence the participation of forest fringe communities in Ghana in implementing and monitoring FLEGT-VPA activities are non-existent or scarce. This study identified significant socio-demographic and environmental factors contributing to participatory forest conservation modules such as FLEGT-VPA which will guide future forest conservation initiatives that are inclusive of stakeholders’ interests/concerns.

Determinants of community participation in a watershed development program in Southern Ethiopia

ABSTRACT Community participation is critically important for the effectiveness of a development project. Different factors influence community participation, and these factors are not the same across all communities. This study aimed to identify the socioeconomic and watershed impact-related factors influencing community participation in a watershed development program in southern Ethiopia. Data were collected from 1,064 respondents (87.7% males) and in nine districts in southern Ethiopia. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression explored which variables predict higher rates of community participation, and whether determining variables changed from before to after the program was implemented. The results show that the variables predicting community participation in the watershed development program were significantly different before and after the program’s implementation. The findings highlight the importance of demonstrating the positive impacts of community development interventions as early in the program as possible to ensure more and continued participation in relevant development projects.

FACTORS AFFECTING PARTICIPATION IN A COMMUNITY-BASED PROGRAM: PADANG CITY-WEST SUMATRA'S EXPERIENCE

Improving the quality of life of a community or an individual is an important aspect for society. This can be achieved in a number of ways that involve the participation of a number of parties. One way is through a community-based sanitation program (SANIMAS). However, community participation is another challenge that we should consider in order to ensure the success of promoting participation in a community-based program as one of the ways to improve the quality of life of society as a whole. The aim of present study is therefore to identify factors influencing community participation in a SANIMAS program. Community participation was measured in the form of frequency and quantitative descriptive distribution on the basis of the Likert scale. Findings discusses a number of internal and external factors related to community participation in the SANIMAS program. It contributes to the current literature review of various internal and external factors that promote the participation of the community in improving their quality of life. This study may be used as a reference for the Government and may be established at other locations for the development of environmental infrastructure in the context of the participation of the urban community.

AGRARIAN ADVOCATION SYSTEM (MODEL UPAYA RESOLUSI KONFLIK AGRARIA PADA MASYARAKAT DI DESA WARU BARAT)

Land conflicts have always been an arena for classical discourse and have always been attractive, especially in the midst of the weak awareness and structure of the State and society which are still low and not well managed. The community's ignorance of the procedures for land registration services actually triggers the potential for increased land conflicts or disputes among the people involved in the conflict. The purpose of this research is to find out 1) what is the role of the village head in ensuring legal certainty over land ownership rights in the community in West Waru village, 2) what is the form of community participation in ensuring legal certainty over the land of residents in West Waru Village, 3) -factors influencing community participation to guarantee and protect legal rights for land voters.&#x0D; This descriptive research is expected to produce descriptive data in the form of written words, oral people or even certain behaviors and symptoms through observation techniques, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Meanwhile, to test the validity of the data the researcher used the source triangulation technique by comparing the data from the interview results with the contents of the document.&#x0D; The results of this study show that first, the roles of the village head can be carried out through a) The role of legislation, namely the preparation of various statutory instruments for legal certainty. b) The role of administrative services, especially those concerning the aspect of land registration, so that it can be implemented with simple procedures and low cost. Second, the success of implementing village community autonomy cannot be separated from the active participation of community members both from the policy formulation and policy application stages. Among the factors that affect the level of community participation in the village of West Waru are internal factors and external factors, internal factors include 1) Consciousness or Willingness, 2) Educational Factors, 3) Income or Income Factors. Factors influencing community participation in Community-Based Ecotourism in Padawan, Sarawak

Community Based Ecotourism (CBE) has commonly practiced by the rural communities of Sarawak as poverty alleviation and local empowerment tool in conserving the natural resources in their livelihood. The community participation in the rural areas of Sarawak is essential in CBE sustainability. This study investigates the community participation in Community Based Ecotourism in Padawan, Sarawak. This study only applied for six selected villages in Kampung Sadir, Kampung Giam Danu, Kampung Annah Rais, Kampung Semadang and Kampung Benuk. These six villages are among the villages in Padawan that have ecotourism potential and availability. The application of the Motivation-Opportunity-Ability (MOA) used to analyse the categories of contributing factors towards the community participation in CBE. Their CBE activities included Tourist Centre/Guide, homestays, heritage festivals and outdoor activities. The method used to accomplish this study is snowball sampling techniques to recruit the participants to be involved in focus group interviews. For this study, the Village Chiefs were requested to select the suitable participants (ecotourism business providers, village committee and common villagers) to participate in focus group interview. Throughout the focus group interview, the participants were required to discuss on the issues or factors influencing their participation in CBE. The findings reveal the factors that affecting motivation, opportunity and ability (MOA) of the community in involving in CBE.

Modifiable child and caregiver factors that influence community participation among children with Down syndrome

Purpose To investigate modifiable child and caregiver factors influencing community participation among children with Down syndrome. Methods Cross-sectional data from a study investigating quality of life of children with intellectual disability were analysed. Participants were caregivers of 89 children with Down syndrome (54 females; 83 school attenders) (mean age 11 y 1 mo; SD 4 y 1 mo). Components of participation (attendance, involvement) were measured using the Participation and Environment Measure for Children and Youth, community module. Caregiver factors were time, mood, transport, and disability funding. Child factors were sleep, behaviour, communication, and health. Multivariate linear regression analyses examined if (i) caregiver factors were associated with attendance and (ii) child factors were associated with involvement. Results Increased caregiver time availability was associated with higher frequency of attendance. Higher frequency of attendance was associated with greater child involvement, and having a sleep breathing disorder and less verbal communication ability was associated with less child involvement. These factors combined explained 21% of the variance. Conclusions Children with Down syndrome who participated in the community more frequently enjoyed greater involvement. Supporting participation of children with poorer verbal communication and/or sleep breathing disorders could further the participation of children with Down syndrome. Implications for rehabilitation Children with Down syndrome who more frequently attended opportunities for participation were more likely to be involved in those experiences. Healthcare providers and educators could foster involvement in participation opportunities of children with poorer verbal ability by supporting the development of prerequisite communication strategies. Rehabilitation programs and policies pertaining to accessibility of community activities need to align with modifiable determinants of participation in children, including availability of caregivers’ time.
