Factors affecting labor productivity in the global construction industry: a critical review, classification and ranking

The construction industry plays a fundamental role in economic development and job creation, but it faces challenges of labor productivity that have been exacerbated due to the recent COVID-19 pandemic. Labor productivity is a critical component of success, as it influences the duration, costs, and efficiency ofprojects. Understanding the nature of factors affecting labor productivity is essential to finding solutions. This study examined the literature to identify key factors influencing labor productivity, departing from conventional analytical approaches. Through mixed-methods analysis, qualitative approaches of systematic reviews identified influential factors based on 97 documents.Subsequently, they were classified using a combination of statistical analysis and hierarchical clustering methods that encompassed both internal and external factors. The Importance Value Index allowed for the classification of the 30 most critical factors, analyzing three possible ranking scenarios. The study found that the interest in researching the topic remains relevant and has evolved over time. In recent years, greater attention has been paid to labor, management, work environment, and technical aspects. The results indicate that internal project factors, such as scheduling, planning, technical considerations, and resourcemanagement, are more predictable and controllable than external factors. Effective resource management and a comprehensive approach are essential for optimizing construction productivity. Project-level factors, as well as materials, tools, and equipment, play an important role. By synthesizing existing knowledge and identifying and classifying key productivity factors, this study offers valuable insights to construction professionals, policymakers, and researchers seeking to improve labor productivity and optimize project outcomes.

Does information and communication technology improve labor productivity? Recent evidence from the Southeast Asian emerging economies

AbstractThe comprehension of the textbook and augmented Solow growth model has been studied to picture the consequences of workforce growth and capital. In the age of digitalization, Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is also the first necessity identified factors affecting labor productivity. This paper revisits the augmented Solow growth equation by integrating ICT as an explanator that improves labor productivity in Southeast Asian emerging economies. We used a Two‐Way Random‐Effects Model to regress the impact of workforce growth rate, physical capital, and human capital on labor productivity. The results show that using human capital is essential to improve output in emerging market countries rather than only using physical capital. According to our adjusted ICT factors, our analysis reveals that using the Internet and mobile cellular significantly boosts labor productivity. Moreover, the analysis of total factor productivity shows that most Southeast Asian economies highly depend on implementing ICT, especially the contribution of Internet usage and mobile cellular. Therefore, this study contributes to further studies and policy recommendations in improving the introduction of Internet usage and installation, especially for the emerging Southeast Asian.

MAIN AREAS OF EFFECTIVE USE OF RTE PERSONNEL

The aim of the article is to study the main directions of efficient use of personnel at a road transport enterprise. The methodological basis of this article is the scientific works of prominent scientists and materials of periodicals. In the course of the study, the authors use the method of logical analysis to substantiate the factors affecting labour productivity and human resources in general. In order to unanimously accept the object of study and comprehensively evaluate modern methods within the framework of the identified problem, the method of system analysis was used. 
 One of the main factors in the success of a road transport enterprise is the competent work of its management, their ability to make the right decisions, set goals and find ways to achieve them. But despite this, the main factor in the successful operation of the enterprise is the manager's ability to manage human resources. The process of resource management at a transport enterprise is considered as the process of making and implementing management decisions aimed at rationalizing the use, increasing and optimizing the resource potential of the enterprise in order to achieve the set goals and ensure the sustainable functioning of the transport enterprise. Effective formation and use of the company's personnel is determined by global trends in the development of human capital and professional competencies of some employees. To increase the effective use of personnel, it is necessary to implement a strategic planning process before the start of the employment of an individual employee, to justify the ways of developing human resources, and to form personnel reserves at the transport enterprise.
 The efficient use of personnel is directly related to the efficiency of the production process, so the assessment and analysis of the status and rationalization of personnel use should play a key role in the system of general analysis of the RTE economic activity. A carefully developed system of resource potential management will allow a road transport enterprise to increase the efficiency of its resource potential, as well as to ensure financial stability, increase profitability, and develop the enterprise in a competitive environment of transport services.

Factors Affecting Labor Productivity of Rubber Tapping PT. Melania Indonesia Mas Estate (Case Study at PT Melania Indonesia Mas Estate Toy Village, Sembawa District, Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatra)
 This study aims to determine the productivity of the tapping labor force and the factors that influence the productivity of the rubber tapping workforce of PT Melania Indonesia. This analysis uses independent variables, namely wages, work experience and incentives. The dependent variable is the productivity of tapping labor. The sample of this research is the rubber tapper workers of PT Melania Indonesia as many as 78 respondents. Statistical method using Multiple Linear Regression Analysis using SPSS 24 program, with hypothesis testing statistical test t. The results of the analysis of data from the t test showed that the wage variable (X1) had a positive and significant effect on productivity with a Sig value of 0.009 <0.05, the work experience variable (X2) and incentives (X3) also had a positive and significant effect on productivity with a Sig value. 0.000 < 0.05 and 0.000 < 0.05. The magnitude of the coefficient of determination R2 is 0.950. This means that the tapping labor productivity variable is influenced by the variables of wages, work experience and incentives by 95%. The conclusion of this study is that the variables of wages, work experience and incentives are factors that affect the productivity of rubber tappers in PT Melania Indonesia's plantation. In this case, plantation companies are expected to pay attention to stability in the provision of wages, work experience and incentives, this is because these variables are the driving factors that affect the workforce in achieving company goals.

Analysis of Factors Affecting Labor Productivity of Upper Structure Work on the Hurun Beach Resort Project Using the AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process)

Development and project development in Indonesia is very important and is expected to have a good impact on the economy of this country. To achieve reliable development, it is necessary to manage human resources with the aim of increasing construction productivity. The factor influencing productivity is one of the benchmarks for the success of construction development implementation. This study aims to analyze the factors and occupations that have a relative effect on labor productivity in the Hurun Beach Resort Project. The AHP method is the research method used to carry out the analysis in this study. This is because decision-making criteria and alternatives become a reference to obtain achievements so that the percentage of the desired productivity factor can be known. Based on the results of the sub-criteria analysis, the relatively influential factor is the shop drawing with a weight of 0.19432, the second is the experience factor of 0.11948, and the third is the factor of adding working hours 0.10936. After analyzing the sub-criteria and then getting the final weight, the alternative superstructure work that is relatively influential is formwork work with a weight of 0.03413, the second is ironwork 0.03049, and the third is casting work 0, 0207.

Key Factors Affecting the Efficiency and Achievement of Labor Productivity in Some Public Construction Projects in Jordan

Over some years, many public projects in Jordan have experienced delays due to an inappropriate initial work management plan. The performance of labor in construction projects is affected by many factors and has a direct interrelationship with the triple constraint of the project time, cost, and scope. This study aims to analyze the factors affecting labor productivity in some public projects in Jordan, labors achievements and motivation. To achieve the purpose of the study a questionnaire was developed to observe the impact of critical factors on labor productivity and the traffic intersections: Al-Ersal /Al-Hurryah intersection and Marj Al-Hamam intersection project was selected to be the study sample. The data from the questionnaire were statistically analyzed using the (SPSS) program, to analyze the data collected from the survey, this study used the method of Relative Importance Index (RII) to measure the impact of the critical factors affecting labor productivity. From the analysis of 32 Factors that were identified from literature review affecting the labor productivity, it is concluded that the top ten factors affecting labor productivity in The Traffic Intersections in Amman: Al-Ersal /Al-Hurryah Intersection and Marj Al-Hamam Intersection Project are as follows: (1) Payment delays to labor, (2) Material Shortage, (3) Tools and equipment shortage, and Low wages in the same rank, (4) Allocate tasks to labors fairly and according to specialization, (5) Job Security, (6) Deficiency of motivation, (7) Labor absenteeism, (8) Incompetence of site supervisor, (9) Poor communication of supervisor with labors, (10) Lack of labor skilled and experience.

The Rank of Factors Affecting Labor Productivity on Construction Projects

Human resources or labor is one of the factors that influence the success of a construction project. Based on this
 statement, it is necessary to analyze labor productivity. Many factors can affect labor productivity. This
 research aims to determine the ranking of factors that affect labor productivity in high-rise building
 construction projects in Jabodetabek. These factors are divided into 2 parts, namely internal factors, and
 external factors. Internal factors are factors derived from within labor control and external factors are factors
 derived from outside labor control. The method used in this research is a quantitative research method using a
 questionnaire. Furthermore, this research is analyzed using IBM SPSS software for validity and reliability
 testing and analyzed using the Relative Importance Index (RII) to determine the ranking of these factors.
 Based on the results of the validity and reliability tests, 18 variables were declared valid and reliable. The
 highest ranking of the factors that affect labor productivity when viewed as a whole is work skills which is a
 variable from internal factors with an RII value of 0,906, while the highest ranking of external factors is
 equipment quality with an RII value of 0,883.

Critical Success Factors Affecting Labour Productivity in Building Sector Projects

Labour productivity has been the topic of study since last few decades due to its great contribution in the project success and organization’s growth. Various factors causing poor productivity of labour have been identified by several re-searchers worldwide. Labour productivity has been one of the least studied areas for the building sector projects within the construction industry of Pakistan. The main aim of this article is to review the previous studies since last one decade and identify the critical factors affecting labour productivity in building sector projects. To achieve the aim, a questionnaire survey based on the identified factors was carried out. The data obtained from 133 successfully returned questionnaires, was analysed by using Average Index (AI) method with the help of Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). The findings of this research highlight 15 topmost factors affecting labour productivity including Shortage of materials at first, followed by Shortage of equipment, Lack of supervision, low wages given by employer, old and inefficient equipment, overtime, delays in salary payments, Experience of workers, rewards mechanism, reworks, height of working place, improper work planning, age of the worker, Intensity of lighting and ventilation and weather conditions respectively. The study also gives some suggestions and recommendations to overcome the labour productivity issue. This paper will help the construction stakeholders and researchers as guideline to focus on the key factors that affect the la-bour productivity in building sector projects, which ultimately have been reducing the project’s success and hindering the organizational growth as well.

Factors Affecting Labor Productivity on Construction in Kurdistan of Iraq: Web Survey

This study was set out to investigate factors affecting labor productivity on construction in the north of Iraq (Kurdistan) and to rank all the factors based on engineers, contractors, and designer’s opinions. 76 factors were analyzed based on previous literature and a pilot study. Next, by using online Google Form, a questionnaire form was created and sent to people who have experience in the construction industry. Afterward, the questionnaire form was sent to targeted people by email and social media apps. Factors were divided into nine groups “Management, Technical and Technology, Human and Workforce, Leadership, Motivation, Safety, Time, Material and Equipment, and External”. However, 202 respondents participated in this study, and they were asked to give weight to the factors using the Likert scale from 1 to 5. Finally, the Relative Importance Index RII was used to determine the factors statically with MS Excel 2015. In brief, all the respondents agreed upon “Economic condition in the country” is the first ranking factor. While “Site complication” was the last factor that affect labor productivity in construction. Last but not least, the “Motivation” group was the first ranked group. Apart from the factors, respondents agreed that Site Engineers have more effect on construction projects than Contractors and Designers.

Labor Productivity analysis in Lao PDR Case study: Garment, Furniture and food-beverage industry

Growth in labor productivity is crucial to economic growth and has an important role to increase worker incomes. As a result, this study has analyzed the level of labor productivity in three industries, such as furniture, food-beverage, and clothing industry, and studies of factors affecting labor productivity. The study found that only large textile industries with higher productivity and positive value were positive. Generally, manufacturing output is lower than that of manufacturing, with only large garment industry with higher labor productivity than zero, both in manufacturing, manufacturing and outside manufacturing. In addition, all three industries have a higher remuneration than average labor per capita per month, whether for production, manufacturing or outside production. But the small-scale food-beverage industry is characterized by lower labor productivity than labor-intensive remuneration, and the medium-sized garment industry is lower than the third-generation labor productivity of less than three times a month. Thus, the wage determination of these groups should be delineated so that it can provide an incentive to the labor force and increase the level of labor productivity. In addition, the government should focus on building a vocational training promotion and training program for Lao workers, as well as building labor productivity awareness among entrepreneurs, especially Lao entrepreneurs, in order to stimulate labor productivity.

Evaluation of weather-productivity models of construction labour for tropics

PurposeWeather is one of the main factors affecting labour productivity. Existing weather-productivity models focussed on hot and cold climates paying less attention to the tropics. Many tropical countries are expected to be the most areas affected by accelerated climate change and global warming, which may have a severe impact on labour health and productivity. The purpose of this paper is to assess whether the existing models can be used to predict labour productivity based on weather conditions in the tropics.Design/methodology/approachFive models are identified from the literature for evaluation. Using real labour productivity data of a high-rise building project in Malaysia, the actual productivity rate was compared with predicted productivity rates generated using the five models. The predicted productivity rates were generated using weather variables collected from an adjusting weather station to the project.FindingsCompared with other models evaluated in this paper, the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) was found to be the best model to predict productivity based on the case study data. However, the result shows only a 57% accuracy level of the USACE model indicating the need to develop a new model for the tropics for more accurate prediction.Originality/valueThe result of this study is perhaps the first to apply meteorological variables to predict productivity rates and validate them using actual productivity data in the tropics. This study is the first step to developing a more accurate productivity model, which will be useful for project planning and more accurate productivity rate estimation.

The work is devoted to the development of methodological approaches to the choice of ways to increase labor productivity through ergonomic support during complex production preparation. Separate measures for the organization of labor at the enterprise with possible improvement of labor rationing, assessment and training of personnel, the choice of directions for automation of individual operations are considered. The characteristics of performers (operators) to be evaluated during professional selection and their use in modeling the processes of interaction of operators with the control object under certain conditions of the production environment, requirements for the quality of operations performed are analyzed. The subjective and physical environment reduces or increases the quality indicators of the operator's activity and their accounting together with the individual characteristics of the operators requires a methodology based on a systematic analysis of all factors affecting labor productivity. The results of mathematical modeling based on experimental data, taking into account the complex nature of factors operating in the production system, are presented.

The aim of this study is to identify the key factors that affect the labour productivity in construction industry. Survey is carried out through questionnaire and distributed to respondents who work at various projects in construction industry and the questionnaires are rated by project managers, experienced engineers and labours using their past experiences. The data are collected and analysed. Using this data the factors affecting labour productivity are identified and ranked. Thereafter, necessary suggestions are given to improve the labour productivity

Factors Affecting Labor Productivity of Palm Oil Harvesters at PT. Betami, Rantau District, Aceh Tamiang Regency

The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of age, work experience, number of dependents, salary of supporting facilities and motivation on work productivity of oil palm harvesters at PT, Betami Kebun Rantau, Aceh Tamiang Regency. The analytical method used is multiple linear regression analysis with SPSS 24.0 tool. The sampling method used the census method and the sample of this study amounted to 35 employees of oil palm harvesters at PT. Betami Overseas Gardens, Aceh Tamiang Regency. Determination of the research area is done purposively. The results of the study concluded that the work productivity of oil palm harvesters was high, i.e. 50,000 – 52,000 Kg/HKP/Month. Factors Age, Work Experience, Number of Dependents, and Motivation have no significant effect on the work productivity of oil palm harvesting employees at PT. Betami Rantau Farms while the Salary and Supporting Facilities have a significant effect on the work productivity of oil palm harvesting employees at PT. Betami Overseas Gardens.

Factors of labor productivity of employees of a cardiology medical organization

The search for resources to increase labor productivity is associated with a theoretical analysis of conditions and factors. This problem is particularly acute in the context of the fight against the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic; issues of rational management of human resources are coming to the fore. Labor productivity is one of the key indicators organization’s labor efficiency. The research was carried out based on general scientific methods analysis and synthesis, logical analysis, and sociological survey. The article analyzes the factors affecting the labor productivity of employee’s medical organization. A high assessment of the level of employee productivity was obtained, the relationship between the financial stability of the institution and work in a pandemic was revealed. The most significant factors affecting labor productivity are the availability of a personnel incentive system (75%, p = 0.028), the level of material and technical support (74%, p = 0.05), the moral and psychological climate in the team (64%, p = 0.007) and working conditions (63%, p = 0.26). It is proved those comfortable working conditions, a favorable moral and psychological climate, the level of material and technical support, regular professional development and the availability of a quality management system create conditions for improving the productivity of health workers.

Impact of Labour Productivity Factors on Construction Project Cost and Time

Productivity is the dominating aspect in construction as it encourages cost savings and effective utilization of resources. Poor labour productivity is one of the major causes of cost and time overrun in construction projects and as such requires attention. Previous studies have identified factors affecting labour productivity within building projects, however, there is need to understand these factors as it relates to their impact on cost and time. In view of this, the paper aimed at assessing the impact of factors affecting labour productivity on cost and time, with a view to minimizing their effects on construction projects. The study elicits knowledge gained by project managers actively engaged in construction projects within Abuja been the Federal Capital Territory and employed the use of a survey. A well-structured questionnaire was designed to collect data with respect to degree of impact of labour productivity factors on construction project cost, and time using a five-point Likert scale and distributed to 45 project managers using purposive sampling. Responses from the administered questionnaires were collated, interpreted, and analysed using descriptive statistics, and results presented in tables. The findings showed that material shortage at project site with a mean value of 3.68 had significant impact on construction project cost. Furthermore, lack of tools and equipment in the market, and workforce absenteeism with mean values of 3.65 and 3.62 respectively had significant impacts on construction project time. The study concludes that material shortage, lack of tools and equipment in the market, and workforce absenteeism are labour productivity factors that had significant impact on construction project cost and time. Thus, Construction managers should enforce the use of material supply schedule, and adopt appropriate financial incentives for employee’s that could curtail the problem of absenteeism.

Construction productivity prediction through Bayesian networks for building projects: case from Vietnam

PurposeThis study aims to focus on exploring the construction productivity of building projects under the influence of potential factors. The three primary purposes are (1) determining critical factors affecting construction productivity; (2) identifying causal relationship and occurrence probability of these factors to develop a Bayesian network (BN) model; and (3) validating the accuracy of predictions from the proposed BN model via a case study.Design/methodology/approachA conceptual framework that includes three performance stages was used. Twenty-two possible factors were screened from a comprehensive literature review and evaluated through expert opinions. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire-based survey and case-study-based survey. The sampling methods were based on non-probability sampling.FindingsWorker characteristic-related factors significantly affect labour productivity for a construction task. Construction productivity is dominated by the working frequency of workers (overtime), complexity of the task, level of technology application and accidents. Labour productivity is defined as nearly 50% of the baseline productivity using the BN model created by the caut 2sal relationship and probability of factors. The prediction error of the BN model was 6.6%, 10.0% and 9.3% for formwork (m2/h), reinforcing steel (ton/h) and concrete (m3/h), respectively.Research limitations/implicationsThe evaluation or prediction of productivity performance has become a necessary topic for research and practice.Practical implicationsManagers and practitioners in the construction sector can utilise the outcome of this study to create good productivity management policies for their prospective projects.Originality/valueWorker-related characteristics are dominant among critical factors affecting labour productivity for a construction task; the proposed BN-based predictive model is built based on these critical factors. The BN approach is highly accurate for construction productivity prediction. The findings of this study can fill gaps in the construction management body of knowledge when modelling construction productivity under the effects of multiple factors and using a simple probabilistic graphic tool.

Relationship between delay and productivity in construction projects

This study is conducted to recognize the major delay factors, the major construction productivity factors, and to establish the relationship between productivity and delay in construction projects in Saudi Arabia. A questionnaire survey is performed to achieve study objectives. Fourteen-time overrun factors and 13 construction productivity factors are listed in a questionnaire form. Fifty contractors consultants are asked to rank the identified factors according to their importance. The study also addresses the relationship between labor productivity and time overrun based on data collected from 34 building projects implemented in Saudi Arabia. Results conclude that the top factors affecting delay in construction projects are: poor labor productivity, poor coordination between construction parties, lack of adequate manpower, bid award for lowest price, and mistakes in design. It also indicates that the major labor productivity factors are: payments delay, lack of labor experience, frequent change orders, rework, and financial conditions of the contractor are ranked overall as the top 13 factors affecting labor productivity on construction sites. Regression analysis for data collected from 34 building projects indicates a strong correlation between the delay and labor productivity. It is hoped that the results of this study will be helpful for construction parties and researchers in Palestine and other developed and developing countries.
