Adolescents' use of online food delivery applications and perceptions of healthy food options and food safety: a cross-sectional study in the United Arab Emirates.

This cross-sectional study aimed to assess Online food delivery applications (OFDA) usage trends among adolescent users in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), focusing on their perceptions of healthy food options and food safety (n = 532). Sociodemographic information, frequency of OFDA use, factors affecting food choices, and perceptions of healthy food and food safety were investigated. A total perception score was calculated for each participant. Most participants used OFDAs weekly (65.4%), favoring fast food (85.7%). Factors like appearance and price drove food choices (65.0%), while taste and cost hindered healthy food orders (29.7 and 28.2%). Younger and frequent users had lower scores for perceiving healthy food, while seeking healthy options was associated with higher scores (p < 0.05). Females and those seeking healthy food showed higher food safety scores (p < 0.05). The study suggests tailored interventions to promote healthier choices and improve food safety perceptions among adolescents using OFDAs in the UAE.

The effect of nutrition labels on lunch buffet consumption: a real-life experiment

PurposeThis study aims to increase knowledge of the ability of nutrition labels to guide consumer choices in real-life environments.Design/methodology/approachFood consumption and plate waste data were collected from two self-service restaurants (SSR) with different customer groups over six observation days: three control and three intervention (with nutrition labelling) periods. Study Group 1 consisted of vocational school students, mostly late adolescents (N = 1,710), and Group 2 consisted of spa hotel customers, mostly elderly (N = 1,807). In the experimental restaurants, the same food was served to the buffets during the control and intervention periods.FindingsThe nutrition label in the lunch buffet guides customers to eat fewer main foods and salads and to select healthier choices. Increased consumption of taste enhancers (salt and ketchup) was observed in the study restaurants after nutritional labelling. Nutrition labelling was associated with a reduction in plate waste among the elderly, whereas the opposite was observed among adolescents.Originality/valueThe results provide public policymakers and marketers with a better understanding of the effects of nutrition labelling on consumer behaviour. Future studies should further evaluate the effects of nutrition labelling on the overall quality of customer diets and the complex environmental, social, and psychological factors affecting food choices and plate waste accumulation in various study groups.

PurposeThe purpose of this research is to (1) identify factors affecting food choices of young adults in Canada based on environmental perceptions, personal and behavioral factors as determinants of eating behaviors; (2) segment Canadian young adults based on the importance of the identified factors in their food choices.Design/methodology/approachAn online survey was administered to Canadians aged between 18 and 24 to collect data on socio-demographic factors and eating behaviors (N = 297). An exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was used to identify the main factors affecting eating behaviors in young adults, followed by K-means clustering to categorize the respondents into consumer segments based on their propensity to agree with the factors.FindingsSix factors were extracted: beliefs (ethical, environmental and personal); familiarity and convenience; joy and experience; food influencers and sociability; cultural identity; and body image. Using these factors, six consumer segments were identified, whereby members of each segment have more similar scores on each factor than members of other segments. The six consumer segments were: “conventional”; “concerned”; “indifferent”; “non-trend follower”; “tradition-follower”; and “eat what you love”.Originality/valueIdentifying major factors influencing eating behaviors and consumer segmentation provides insights on how eating behaviors might be shaped. Furthermore, the outcomes of this study are important for designing effective interventions for shaping eating behaviors particularly improving sustainable eating habits.

A Dog’s Dinner: Factors affecting food choice and feeding practices for UK dog owners feeding raw meat-based or conventional cooked diets

IntroductionFood selection is an area of dog ownership where owners have direct control over their pet’s wellbeing. While commercial cooked complete foods remain the majority component of many dog diets, there is increasing interest in alternative options including natural and raw ingredients. This study aimed to provide further data regarding feeding practices and diet choice for UK dog owners with a focus on raw meat diets. MethodsAn online survey available to all UK dog owners and advertised through sources including social media and at Crufts was conducted from February to March 2020. Feeding practices and diet choice were assessed, and owners were categorised as either feeding a raw meat diet (RMD) or non-raw diet (NRMD) based on their responses. Descriptive, univariable and multivariable data analyses were undertaken to determine dog and owner factors associated with feeding RMD, and thematic analysis was undertaken on free-text responses. ResultsA total of 1831 owners completed the survey (915 RMD, 916 NRMD) detailing information for 3212 dogs (1754 RMD, 1458 NRMD). Dog breed (German Shepherd), Border Collie, Crossbreed (p < 0.001), entire neuter status (p < 0.001) and younger age (p 0.022) were associated with RMD feeding. RMD-feeding owners were likely to own > 1 dog (p < 0.001). RMD-feeding owners were more likely to cite a ‘more natural’ diet as a reason for their diet choice, and less likely to cite ‘advice from a veterinary professional’ compared to those who fed NRMD (p < 0.001). They were more likely to seek dietary advice from social media, friends/family and breeders rather than a veterinary surgeon/nurse (p < 0.001).RMD-feeding owners perceived their diet choice to provide a wide range of health benefits, including for coat health, oral hygiene, general digestive system health, anal sac clearance, mobility, performance and behaviour, and perceived NRMD as a health risk for most of these health factors (p < 0.001). NRMD-feeding owners perceived RMD to be a risk for bone splinters and foreign bodies (p < 0.001).RMD-feeding owners did not perceive diet to be a risk to their dog, themselves or in-contact dogs or people. In contrast, NRMD-feeding owners perceived the opposite (p < 0.001). ConclusionsFactors affecting dog food selection are multifactorial and complex, with owners who feed RMD and those who feed NRMD having differing views. Further research regarding benefits and risks of different diets is required, however it remains vital that communication regarding the public health risks of RMD is seen as credible to owners and disseminated in a way that reaches the desired audience.

Determinants of Food Choices and Selection of Healthier Food Products by Adults (20–40 Years Old) Residing in Delhi

ObjectivesThis study was aimed to assess the factors influencing food choices, food label reading habits, and understanding of nutrition information on food labels among adults. MethodsThe study had a cross-sectional study design with a non-probability purposive sampling technique where adults who engaged in food purchase were selected from housing colonies from four geographical zones of the city. Key informants were contacted and thereafter snowball sampling was applied to collect data using a mixed-methods approach from 589 adults (20–40 years). Statistical analysis was performed with a level of significance P < 0.05. ResultsThe most influential factors affecting food choices were brand (30%), nutritive value (22%), and taste (20%). Food selection depended on whether the adult had a meal with friends or family. Most participants read food labels (79%) and noticed nutrition and health claims (76%) on packaged food items. Most participants (80%) between 20–30 years read food labels and were most influenced by the health claim ‘lowers cholesterol’ (χ2 = 44.5, P < 0.001) compared to 30–40 year olds. Participants belonging to the upper-middle-income group were less likely to value nutrition over taste as compared to the high-income group while choosing food products adjusting for age, marital status, and gender (OR = 0.57, CI:0.381–0.86). Around 77% of participants believed that they understood nutritional information, though most (74%) could not identify whether foods were rich or low in specific nutrients. Females were more likely to understand nutrition information as compared to men (OR = 1.52, CI: 1.01–2.31). Among all the nutrient profiling models shown, the majority found the color-coded ‘traffic light scheme’ format easiest to understand. ConclusionsA combination of drivers influences food selection by an adult. The public health policy needs to adopt a food systems approach that brings about change in the food environment. The availability of healthy yet tasty alternatives needs to be encouraged and foods high in fat, salt, and sugar need to be discouraged. The packaging regulations need to ensure that food labels communicate about healthfulness in a simple manner to enable consumers to make better food choices. Age, an Important Sociodemographic Determinant of Factors Influencing Consumers' Food Choices and Purchasing Habits: An English University Setting.

The purchasing behaviors of university staff (n = 188) and their use of nutrition labels in making food choices were investigated by an online survey. The age of the participants significantly impacted their purchasing behaviors. This effect was not observed with other sociodemographic characteristics studied (level of education, gender, employment status and ethnicity). The impact of age on the extrinsic factors affecting food choice (personal preference, previous knowledge, convenience, religion/beliefs) and intrinsic factors (quantity, country of origin, method of preparation/serving, fat, salt, protein and added sugar contents) were further explored. The use of nutrition labels among different age groups when buying for the first time was significant for breakfast cereals and fruit juices.

A Comparative Analysis for Factors Affecting Food Choice among Rural and Urban Households of Central Gujarat

The food is one of the basic needs of human kind. However, physiological and nutritional factors affect food choice, but many factors affecting food choice broadly included social, economic, cultural, personal and environmental. The Indian spends almost half of the income on food items. The consumers of India can be broadly classified based on geography as rural and urban consumers. The consumption patterns in rural and urban areas varied in various aspects. Do the rural and urban consumers differ in food choice, being an important and basic need of human? The present study was planned to understand the factors affecting food choice, and it further examined the difference between rural and urban for food choices. The study found three factors through factor analysis, namely environmental influence, product feature and availability, and affordability and promotion. The significant difference was found between rural and urban areas for factors affecting food choice. The study's outcome will help the marketer design the marketing strategies for the products and new product design, and it will also help design the segmentation, targeting, and positioning strategies.

Consumers' Perceptions of Healthy Food Availability in Online Food Delivery Applications (OFD Apps) and Its Association With Food Choices Among Public University Students in Malaysia.

This retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted to study consumers' perceptions of healthy food availability in online food delivery applications (OFD apps) among public university students in Malaysia and its association with their food choices. A total of 290 subjects aged 19–29 years old were recruited from 20 public universities in Malaysia via snowball sampling. Data was collected through an online questionnaire which consisted of socio-demographic status, use of OFD apps (most frequently used brand, usage frequency, food choice, and expenditure per transaction), factors affecting food choice in OFD apps, consumers' perceptions of healthy food availability in OFD apps and recommendation for improvements. The most frequently used apps among the subjects was Food Panda (46.6%), however, majority of the subjects in this study (41.4%) rarely used OFD apps. Also, most of the subjects ordered unhealthy food (77.6%) and spent up to RM15–RM19 for each transaction (43.1%). There was no significant difference between the use of OFD apps and gender (p > 0.05). Among the five food choice motives, “price and convenience” motive was the most influencing food choice factor in OFD apps. Majority of the subjects (76.9%) had a negative perception of healthy food availability (variety, price, and quality of healthy food) in OFD apps. No significant association was found between consumers' perceptions of healthy food availability in OFD apps and their food choices made in OFD apps among the subjects in this study (p > 0.05). Also, majority (85.9%) responded they are keen to purchase healthy foods through OFD apps if they are given an option. However, most Malaysian public university students perceived that there were not much variety of healthy food, of good quality and affordable price, available in OFD apps. This finding suggests that the online food environment in Malaysia are perceived as unhealthy. Future studies can explore the online food environment particularly its impact on community health and well-being. Public health professionals and policymakers need to address the online food environment issues as part of the obesogenic food environment in Malaysia especially when OFD is one of the most convenient service in this country.

The relative importance of primary food choice factors among different consumer groups: A latent profile analysis

Food choices determine consumers’ dietary and energy intakes, and in turn their risk of obesity and diet-related diseases. Factors affecting food choices are complex, varied, and inter-connected. The aims of this study were to assess the relative importance of four factors influencing food choices (taste, price, healthiness, and convenience) and identify segments of consumers according to their ratings. Australian consumers (n = 1,558) aged 18 + years completed an online survey assessing a range of factors influencing their food choices, including the perceived importance of taste, price, healthiness, and convenience. Latent profile analysis was undertaken to identify segments, with bivariate analyses then conducted to describe the differences between the derived segments. Overall, taste was reported to be the dominant factor determining food choices (Mean (M) = 4.42; SD = 0.72; z-score = 0.43), followed by price (M = 4.19; SD = 0.78; z-score = 0.15), healthiness (M = 4.07; SD = 0.82, z-score = 0.00), and finally convenience (M = 3.79; SD = 0.82, z-score = -0.35). However, there were variations in absolute and relative ratings across the four identified segments. Two segments (‘High involvement’ and ‘Taste focused’, together accounting for 53% of the sample) rated taste highest, and the other two segments (‘Moderate involvement’ and ‘Indifferent’, 47% of the sample) rated price highest. Age, gender, residential location, and responsibility for grocery shopping were associated with segment membership. Understanding the dominant drivers of food choices across different consumer segments is useful for the development of tailored nutrition promotion messages and interventions to address obesity and other diet-related diseases.

Food Choice Determinants and Perceptions of a Healthy Diet among Italian Consumers.

Healthy food choices are crucial for a healthy lifestyle. However, food choices are complex and affected by various factors. Understanding the determinant factors affecting food choices could aid policy-makers in designing better strategies to promote healthy food choices in the general public. This study aims to evaluate the food choice motivations and to segment consumer groups, according to their food choice motivations, in a sample of 531 Italian consumers (collected by convenience sampling), through offline and online survey platforms. K-means cluster analysis was applied to identify consumer groups using six food choice motivation categories (health, emotional, economic and availability, social and cultural, environmental and political, and marketing and commercial). The results suggest that the strongest determinants for the food choices of Italian consumers are Environmental factors and Health. Two consumer profiles were identified through the segmentation analysis: Emotional eating and Health-driven consumers. The respondents were found to have a good awareness of what comprises a healthy diet. There is a potential market for healthy and sustainable food products, especially products with minimal or environmentally friendly packages. Food labels and information strategies could be promoted as tools to assist consumers to make healthy food choices.

Factors Affecting Food Choices of Millennials: How they Decide What to Eat?

Millennials, who are also known as generation Y, constitute an important group of consumers for the tourism and hospitality industry. Hence, the purpose of this study is to understand which factors affect their food choices and whether these factors show any difference for demographic variables. A quantitative research design using exploratory factor analysis is employed to understand the different dimensions of food choice behavior of millennials. The findings of the study have explored six factors that guide the food purchase of generation Y. In addition, the relative importance of each factor has provided a better understanding of the role of each dimension. Therefore, this study provides implications about how to address the demands of a generation, which could be considered a unique target market for the hospitality industry.

Eating pattern among adolescent female student, Applied Medical Sciences College, University of Hafr-Al Batin

The college students, representing the young age population of community, for different reasons are prone to eat unhealthy foods and to have bad health habits during their college years which might affect their well-being and increase the risk of obesity, diabetes, and coronary heart disease; like fast food consumption, lower vegetable and fruit intake in face of less physical activities and a lot of computer &amp; TV watching hours. This study aimed to assess eating habits and patterns, factors affecting food choices and anthropometric measurements. Descriptive cross-sectional study method was followed. 230 students were included in the study. The findings revealed that 50.9% of the study sample were at age group (&lt; 20 years), nearly half 48.7% were at a preparatory year. Results show also that 44.3% of the study sample don't take breakfast regularly; the most reported causes were not enough time at home 49% and that they don't prefer cafeteria food 24.6% nor there is no for a break in the timetable 21.6%. The results show that 53.04% had a normal BMI and 24.35% were overweight. The BMI had a significant relation with the consumption and snacking patterns among students (p = .000). So, there is a greater need for constructing educational programs to be directed to enhance the nutritional status of the university adolescent students.

The Suitability of Fishes as Models for Studying Appetitive Behavior in Vertebrates.

Fish have proven to be valuable models in the study of the endocrine control of appetite in response to peripheral signals of energetic and nutritional status. In parallel, a growing body of literature points to the importance of sensory experiences as factors affecting food choice in fish, with a special focus on visual and chemical signals allowing discrimination of potential foods within a 3D environment. Accordingly, waterborne compounds, such as monosaccharides or amino acids, are regarded as the main "olfactory" cues driving fish alimentary behavior. However, we recently suggested that hydrophobic molecules also allow food identification in aquatic environments and that fish actually explore a larger variety of chemosensory cues, including the olfactory/volatile compounds, when determining food palatability. In this study, we show that both homeostatic and chemosensory mechanisms involved in food intake are highly conserved in vertebrates and that the chemosensory world of fish is less different from that of terrestrial mammals than commonly thought. As a result, we support a more integrated and synthetic view of the mechanisms of chemical communication in both terrestrial and aquatic systems, which could help to ensure greater translatability of the fish models, such as the zebrafish (Danio rerio), the turquoise killifish (Nothobranchius furzeri), the goldfish (Carassius auratus), or the Japanese medaka fish (Oryzias latipes) to terrestrial vertebrates when approaching complex dynamic patterns in alimentary behavior.

Motivations for Food Consumption during Specific Eating Occasions in Turkey

Several studies in different countries have been conducted to investigate factors affecting food choices. The objective of this study was to understand the motivations of specific food and beverage choices for different eating occasions in a typical diet of the Turkish people. A convenience sample of 141 respondents from seven different geographical regions in Turkey completed an online survey questionnaire that included questions about demographic information and details about their latest eating occasion. Respondents reported all of their motivations for choosing each food/beverage item reported for that specific eating occasion. Results indicated that different motivations played different roles in food choices of people in Turkey. Liking was a key characteristic for all eating occasions, but key natural concerns were even more important at breakfast, and need and hunger were more important for a mid-afternoon snack. Lunch involved additional motivations such as Sociability, Variety Seeking, and Social Norms. In addition to Liking, choices of different food groups were also driven by other motivations such as Habits, Convenience, Need and Hunger, Natural Concerns, and Health. This study helped better understand the current dietary patterns of Turkish people as well as the motives underlying their choices of foods and beverages for different meals and snacks. These findings could be useful for dietary campaigns that aim to improve eating behaviors in Turkey.

The importance of stories in understanding people's relationship to food: narrative inquiry methodology has much to offer the public health nutrition researcher and practitioner.

Despite the usefulness of quantitative research, qualitative research methodologies are equally needed to allow researchers to better understand the important social and environmental factors affecting food choice and eating habits. The present paper contributes insights from narrative inquiry, a well-established qualitative methodology, to a food-related doctoral research study. The connections between food shoppers and the producer, family, friends and others in the food system, between eaters and the earth, and how these connections affect people's meaning-making of food and pathways to food citizenship, were explored in the research. The research used narrative inquiry methodology and focus groups for data collection. Five different food-ways in the Canberra region of Australia were selected for the present research; that is, community gardens, community-supported agriculture, farmers' markets, fresh food markets and supermarkets. Fifty-two people voluntarily attended eight focus groups with four to nine participants in each. From a practical perspective, the present paper offers a guide to the way in which narrative inquiry has been applied to one research project. The paper describes the application of narrative inquiry methodology, revealing the important place of narratives in generating new knowledge. The paper further outlines how phased narrative analysis can lead to a defensible and rigorous interpretive framework grounded in the data generated from people's stories and meaning-making. We argue that individual, social and system change will not be possible without further rigorous qualitative studies to inform and complement the empirical basis of public health nutrition practice.

Factors affecting food choices of older adults from high and low socioeconomic groups: a discrete choice experiment

Healthiness, price, and convenience are typically indicated as important motives for food choices; however, it is largely unknown to what extent older adults from high and low socioeconomic groups differ in these underlying motives. A discrete choice experiment (DCE) is an innovative way to elicit implicit motives for food choices. The aim was to investigate differences in food motives between socioeconomic groups by means of a DCE. A DCE was carried out during a face-to-face interview among older adults as part of the Health and Living Conditions in Eindhoven and surrounding cities (GLOBE) cohort study, The Netherlands. Participants (n = 399; mean age: 63.3 y) were offered a series of choice sets about a usual dinner at home and were asked to choose in each choice set between 2 meals and an opt-out choice, with different combinations of attribute levels. We included 5 meal attributes (taste, healthiness, preparation time, travel time to shops, and price) and 3 or 4 levels for each attribute. Data were analyzed by multinomial logit models. Healthiness, taste, price, and travel time to the grocery store proved to significantly influence older adults' meal decisions; preparation time was not significant. Healthiness was the most important attribute for all of the participants. More highly educated participants rated a healthy and less expensive meal to be more important than did less educated participants. Those with a high income rated a meal that was healthy and very tasteful to be more important than did those with a lower income. Healthiness, taste, price, and travel time to grocery shops influenced older adults' meal decisions. Higher socioeconomic groups valued health more than did lower socioeconomic groups. DCEs represent a promising method to gain insight into the relative importance of motives for food choices. This trial was registered at www.isrctn.com as ISRCTN60293770.

Taste Preference Evaluation: The First Step towards a Successful Weight Loss Strategy

The famous phrase, “You are what you eat”, reminds us of the important impact of food choice on weight management. Eating and drinking based on food choice is a highly frequent human behavior that is affected by many factors [1]. Consumers report “taste” as one of the most influential factors affecting food choice [2,3]. Taste is the nutritional gatekeeper that determines which foods are chosen and which are rejected, and given the critical role of food intake in weight loss therapy, taste preference is an extremely important factor that needs to be considered to achieve long-term weight loss success. However, inattention to taste preference in weight loss therapy is common, possibly because of the complexity of the causal links between taste preference and food intake. Therefore, the factors that link taste preference and obesity are briefly reviewed in this article, but these factors are not independent of each other.
