Prevalence and Influencing Factors of Irritable Bowel Syndrome Among Nurses in China: A Cross-Sectional Study.

The aims of this study were to investigate the prevalence and influencing factors of irritable bowel syndrome among nurses in order to update the epidemiological data. A questionnaire survey was administered to 1,325 clinical nurses. We used a questionnaire for demographic information, the IBS Severity Scoring System, the IBS Quality of Life questionnaire, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and the Maslach Burnout Inventory to conduct our survey. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to detect factors influencing irritable bowel syndrome among nurses. The prevalence of irritable bowel syndrome was 13.3%, and the severity of symptoms was mostly moderate. The IBS Quality of Life score was significantly reduced (p < .001). Various foods that caused abdominal pain (egg and dairy products [OR = 4.80], greasy food [OR = 5.80], spicy food [OR = 2.66], raw and cold food [OR = 2.43]), a family history of gastrointestinal diseases (OR = 1.64, 95% CI [1.038, 2.587]), drinking weak green tea (OR = 1.71, 95% CI [1.143, 2.552]), mild depression (OR = 1.78, 95% CI [1.005, 3.156]), and the personal accomplishment dimension of occupational burnout (OR = 2.52, 95% CI [1.039, 6.114]) had important effects on nurses suffering from irritable bowel syndrome. On the contrary, exercising 1-2 hours per week (OR = 0.53, 95% CI [0.327, 0.859]) had a protective effect. The prevalence of irritable bowel syndrome among nurses is relatively high and may be influenced by several factors including genetics, diet, exercise, psychology, and occupational burnout.

Prevalence and Associated Risk Factors of Irritable Bowel Syndrome Among General Population: A Cross-Sectional Study in Qassim Region, Saudi Arabia.

Background Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) affects 10-20% of the global population, primarily manifesting as functional issues leading to abdominal discomfort. Key contributors like genetics, psychological factors, weakened immunity, and environmental pollutants play significant roles. Regional variations exist, with prevalence rates ranging from 7-10% in certain areas like South Asia and the Middle East to as high as 20% in many Western countries. Objective The objective of this study is to assess the prevalence of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and its related risk factors among the general populace of the Qassim region, Saudi Arabia, aiming to offer valuable insights for healthcare planning and intervention strategies. Methods A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted, utilizing a validated self-administered questionnaire among residents of the Qassim region aged over 18 years. The questionnaire included demographic information about the participants and the validated Rome IV questionnaire for IBS in adults. Ethical approval for the study was obtained from the Qassim Research Ethics Committee, and data analysis was conducted using R script language version 4.3.3. A significance level of p < 0.05 was employed to interpret the results. Results Overall, significant associations were observed between IBS diagnosis and food allergy (AOR = 2.34, 99% CI: 1.27-4.29), family history of IBS (Adjusted Odd Ratio (AOR) = 7.03, 99% CI: 3.51-15.74), and abdominal pain lasting more than six months (AOR = 2.54, 99% CI: 1.49-4.33). Conclusion This study highlights a high IBS prevalence (21.4%) in Saudi Arabia's Qassim region. While no overall soda-IBS link was found, males showed a protective effect. Significant associations were noted between food allergy, family history, and abdominal pain with IBS diagnosis, especially among females. Further research on gender disparities and familial and abdominal pain roles in IBS management is warranted.

Risk factors for irritable bowel syndrome: A review

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is one of the most common diseases of the digestive tract from the group of disorders of interaction in the gut-brain axis. IBS has a negative impact of on patients' quality of life and the significant social and economic burden of the disease due to the low effectiveness of available treatment strategies, which are only symptomatic, without impacting factors and mechanisms of intestinal dysfunction. From this perspective, it is critical to study the factors contributing to the onset and persistence of IBS symptoms to improve the early diagnosis of the disease and implement targeted prevention technology in at-risk groups. The objective of this paper is to systematize data on the main risk factors for IBS, including hereditary predisposition, stress and psycho-emotional state, diet and eating habits, and acute intestinal infections.

The incidence and predisposing factors for irritable bowel syndrome following COVID-19: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common functional gastrointestinal (GI) disorder. Several studies have analyzed the long-term GI symptoms and IBS following coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The purpose of this study is to evaluate the incidence and predisposing factors for IBS following COVID-19 by a systematic review and meta-analysis. Electronic databases were searched to identify relevant studies. Primary outcomes were the pooled incidence rate of IBS following COVID-19 and the pooled relative risk (RR) for IBS in the COVID-19 group compared to the non-COVID-19 group. Secondary outcomes were the pooled RR and the standardized mean difference (SMD) for predisposing factors in the IBS group compared to the non-IBS group. Heterogeneity was evaluated using Cochran's Q test and I2 statistics. Ten studies were included in this study. The pooled incidence rate of IBS in COVID-19 patients was 12%. The pooled incidence rate of IBS-D, IBS-C and IBS-M was 5%, 2% and 1%. The pooled incidence rate of IBS in 6 and 12 months was 10% and 3%. The pooled RR for IBS in COVID-19 patients was 1.23 [95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.50-3.01] compared to non-COVID-19 patients. The pooled RR or SMD for mild, moderate, and severe disease activity, procalcitonin (PCT), depression or anxiety in IBS patients following COVID-19 was 0.94 (95% CI = 0.74-1.21), 1.19 (95% CI = 0.65-2.21), 1.30 (95% CI = 0.63-2.66), 6.73 (95% CI = 6.08-7.38) and 3.21 (95% CI = 1.79-5.75). The incidence of IBS following COVID-19 was 12%. But it was not higher than the general population. We also found some predisposing factors for IBS including depression or anxiety, PCT.

The Role of Intestinal Barrier Function in Overweight Patients with IBS with Diarrhea Undergoing a Long-Term Low Fermentable Oligo-, Di-, and Monosaccharide and Polyol Diet

Overweight and obesity have been suggested as significant factors in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) development. However, the relationship between overweight/obesity and IBS is unclear. It is known that a modified intestinal barrier, especially the permeability of the small intestine (s-IP), can play a significant role in the pathogenesis of both obesity and IBS. Moreover, dietary interventions are essential for treating both pathologies. We evaluated the gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms and the urinary and circulating markers of GI barrier function and integrity, the markers of intestinal dysbiosis and bacterial translocation, in 40 IBS patients with predominant diarrhea (IBS-D) (32 females and 8 males; mean age = 43.5 ± 1.4 years), categorized using their Body Mass Index levels as normal (NW) and overweight (OW). Evaluations were performed before and after 12 weeks of a Low FODMAP Diet (LFD). At the baseline, OW patients showed a significantly higher s-IP than NW. After an LFD, a significant improvement of s-IP in OW patients occurred, along with a significant decrease in markers of epithelial integrity and bacterial translocation. Our findings highlight the close relationship between overweight and the intestinal barrier and support their involvement in IBS-D pathophysiology. Furthermore, the positive role of an LFD in managing overweight IBS-D was highlighted.

Prevalence, Risk Factors, and Management of Irritable Bowel Syndrome in Saudi Arabia: A Systematic Review.

The prevalence and associated risk factors of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) have been a significant area of focus in several studies conducted in Saudi Arabia. These studies have looked at varied populations, including school teachers, university students, and the general populace. The reported prevalence rates for IBS vary substantially across studies, ranging from 7.9% to an astounding 49.3%. The average prevalence noted across these studies is about 24%. The aim of this review is to collate, compare, and analyze data from these studies, hoping to shed light on the key risk factors and demographic trends associated with IBS in Saudi Arabia. This review encompasses data from 20 studies, aggregating information from 17,018 participants. The research methodologies adopted by each of these studies have been analyzed, especially focusing on their sample sizes, which vary significantly. Furthermore, the review incorporates details on the socio-demographic attributes of the participants, including age specifics, gender representation, and geographical distribution within Saudi Arabia. The results demonstrate a wide variability in IBS prevalence among different groups. The overall prevalence of IBS in Saudi Arabia based on the provided data is approximately 24%. Gender-based breakdown in some studies indicated varying prevalence among males and females, which indicated that females are more prone to the disease. The same for certain age groups, specifically between 51 and 60 years, which showed slightly higher rates. Factors such as educational discipline, living conditions, mental health, dietary habits, family history of IBS, and certain comorbidities such as diabetes mellitus were found to influence the occurrence of IBS in different cohorts. Moreover, lifestyle factors such as low water intake, lack of dietary fiber, stress, and even caffeine intake were associated with IBS. Socioeconomic aspects, including family income levels and academic performance, were also hinted to have a potential link with IBS prevalence.In light of the presented data, it is evident that IBS prevalence in Saudi Arabia is influenced by a multitude of factors, ranging from genetic and dietary to psychological and socioeconomic. The substantial variations in prevalence across different cohorts suggest the need for a more nuanced understanding of this condition, specifically tailored to the unique demographics and cultural contexts of Saudi Arabia. Early diagnosis and tailored interventions, considering these multifaceted determinants, are crucial for the effective management of IBS in the region.

The prevalence and risk factors of irritable bowel syndrome (PRIBS study) among adults in low- and middle-income countries: A multicenter cross-sectional study.

Because of the plenty and abundance of risk factors and the expected increase in the prevalence of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in the world in general and in low- and middle-income countries in particular, this international cross-sectional study was conducted in 15 low- and middle-income countries according to our previous protocol, NCT05340400. Participants were recruited in the period from April 22, 2022 to June 14, 2022. The diagnosis of IBS was according to ROME IV. We determined the physical activity, daily stress, and fatigue of the participants. A large number of collaborators were chosen from different regions and institutions within each country to achieve diversity within the sample and reduce the probability of bias. The prevalence of IBS appears to be higher in low- and middle-income countries (mean = 25.2%, range [6.2%-44.2%]) than in high-income countries, with a higher prevalence among Africans than Caucasians and Asians. The prevalence of IBS increased in the fourth decade by 32.1% and in the fifth decade by 31.1% (p-value < 0.001). In addition to the previously known risk factors for IBS such as female sex, smoking, psychological stress, and chronic fatigue, other risk factors were discovered such as chronic diseases, including high blood pressure and diabetes, allergies to some substances, previous infection with COVID-19, and the participant having a first-degree relative with a patient. There are also some other modifiable risk factors, such as an abnormal body mass index (whether high or low), smoking, a protein- or fat-rich diet, drinking caffeine-containing beverages, and poor physical activity. Highlighting the prevalence and increasing risk factors of IBS in developing countries should draw the attention of those responsible for health care in these countries and reduce the risk factors.

Antibiotic use as a risk factor for irritable bowel syndrome: Results from a nationwide, case-control study.

The microbiome plays an important role in the pathophysiology of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Antibiotic use can fundamentally alter gut microbial ecology. We examined the association of antibiotic use with IBS in a large population-based investigation. A case-control study with prospectively collected data on 29,111 adult patients diagnosed with IBS in Sweden between 2007 and 2016 matched with 135,172 controls. Using a comprehensive histopathology cohort, the Swedish Patient Register, and the Prescribed Drug Register, we identified all consecutive cases of IBS in addition to cumulative antibiotic dispensations accrued until 1 year prior to IBS (exclusionary period) for cases and time of matching for up to five general population controls matched on the basis of age, sex, country and calendar year. Conditional logistic regression estimated multivariable-adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the risk of IBS. Patients with IBS (n = 29,111) were more likely than controls (n = 135,172) to have used antibiotics up to 1 year prior to diagnosis (74.9% vs. 57.8%). After multivariable adjustment, this translated to a more than twofold increased odds of IBS (OR 2.21, 95% CI 2.14-2.28) that did not differ according to age, sex, year of IBS diagnosis or IBS subtype. Compared to none, 1-2 (OR 1.67, 95% CI 1.61-1.73) and ≥3 antibiotics dispensations (OR 3.36, 95% CI 3.24-3.49) were associated with increased odds of IBS (p for trend <0.001) regardless of the antibiotic class. Prior antibiotics use was associated with an increased odds of IBS with the highest risk among people with multiple antibiotics dispensations.

Bladder Pain Sensitivity Is a Potential Risk Factor for Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Although dysmenorrhea is a highly prevalent risk factor for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), the factors underlying this risk are not fully understood. Prior studies support a hypothesis that repeated distressing menstrual pain promotes cross-organ pelvic sensitization with heightened visceral sensitivity. To further explore cross-organ pelvic sensitization we examined the association of dysmenorrhea, provoked bladder pain, and other putative factors with self-reported IBS-domain pain frequency and new onset after 1-year follow up. We measured visceral pain sensitivity with a noninvasive provoked bladder pain test in a cohort of reproductive-aged women, enriched for those reporting moderate-to-severe menstrual pain intensity but without any prior IBS diagnosis (n = 190). We analyzed the relationship between menstrual pain, provoked bladder pain, pain catastrophizing, anxiety, and depression with primary outcomes: (1) frequency of self-reported IBS-domain pain and (2) new onset of IBS-domain pain after 1-year follow up. All hypothesized factors correlated with the frequency of IBS-domain pain (p's ≤ 0.038). In a cross-sectional model, only menstrual pain (standardized adjusted odds ratio 2.07), provoked bladder pain (1.49), and anxiety (1.90) were independently associated with IBS-domain pain ≥ 2days/month (C statistic = 0.79). One year later, provoked bladder pain (3.12) was the only significant predictor of new onset IBS-domain pain (C statistic = 0.87). Increased visceral sensitivity among women with dysmenorrhea could lead to IBS. Because provoked bladder pain predicted subsequent IBS, prospective studies should be performed to see if the early treatment of visceral hypersensitivity mitigates IBS.

Associations between Anxiety, Depression, and Poor Quality of Sleep on the Risk of Irritable Bowel Syndrome: A Meta-Analysis

Background: Risk factors for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) are mental disorders such as anxiety and depression, while sleep disorders affect 50% of patients with IBS. The condition of IBS if it is chronic can have a negative impact on quality of life and work productivity. The purpose of this study was to estimate the relationship between anxiety, depression and poor sleep quality with the risk of irritable bowel syndrome by means of a systematic review and meta-analysis study.Subjects and Method: This article was prepared using systematic review and meta-analysis studies. This study uses the PICO Model. Meta-analytic studies were conducted by searching for articles from databases in electronic form using Google Scholar, PubMed, Springerlink, Sciencedirect, and the Cochrane Library. An article search was conducted on 15-30 October 2022. The keywords used were “irritable bowel syndrome” or “IBS” or “Functional gastrointestinal disorder” or “Anxiety” or “Depression” or “Mental Disorders” or “Psychological stress” or “Sleep quality” or “Sleep disturbances” or “Cross-Sectional”. The inclusion criteria for this study were complete articles using a Cross-Sectional study, with the year of publication 2009-2022. Analysis of the articles in this study used RevMan 5.3 software.Results: A total of 30 cross-sectional studies from Asia were selected for systematic review and meta-analysis. The data collected shows that anxiety increases 1.53 times and depression 1.29 times with the risk of IBS while poor sleep quality increases the risk of IBS by 1.80 times. This data is considered statistically significant. The results showed that Anxiety (aOR=1.53; 95% CI=1.23 to 1.90; p=0.001), Depression (aOR=1.29; 95% CI=1.05 to 1.59; p=0.02), Poor sleep quality (aOR=1.80; 95% CI=1.48 to 2.19; p&lt;0.001).Conclusion: The relationship between anxiety-depression mental disorder and poor sleep quality is felt to be statistically significant in causing irritable bowel syndrome. Os efeitos da dieta FODMAP em crianças e adolescentes com a síndrome do intestino irritável - revisão sistemática

INTRODUCTION: Food is a triggering factor for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) symptoms. One therapeutic management option that has had beneficial effects is a low-FODMAP diet (acronym for fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols). OBJECTIVE: To analyze the efficacy and effects of a low-FODMAP diet in pediatric patients with IBS. METHODS: Systematic review using data from PubMed, SciELO and BVS using the descriptors “(Irritable bowel syndrome) AND (FODMAP)”, age filter from 0 to 18 years, in English, Portuguese and Spanish, with a 10-year temporal filter. Duplicate articles, articles not in agreement with the theme and non-scientific work were excluded. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: 445 articles were found, but only 3 articles were selected among the eligibility criteria. The studies analyzed make comparisons between the test group and the placebo group, or compare children on a typical American infant diet with a reduced FODMAP diet. It is evident that the low FODMAP diet reduces the symptoms of IBS, but it has factors that make it difficult to be practicable, such as: difficulty in being taught and understood, high cost, impact on the intestinal microbiota, presence of side effects such as constipation, in addition to the impact psychological impact of these restrictions for this age group. CONCLUSION: A low-FODMAP diet is a therapy that alleviates the clinical conditions manifested in IBS, but its applicability is limited. More clinical and experimental studies are needed in order to establish whether the benefits of inserting this restrictive diet outweigh the possible harms.

Associations between postprandial symptoms, hydrogen and methane production, and transit time in irritable bowel syndrome.

Abnormal oroanal transit time (OATT) and visceral hypersensitivity are key pathophysiological factors in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The lactulose nutrient challenge test (LNCT) has been developed to assess the postprandial symptoms and gut microbial fermentation. We aimed to investigate associations between OATT, rectal sensitivity, and LNCT in IBS patients. We included 263 IBS patients from two study cohorts, where the link between pathophysiology and symptoms was investigated. During the LNCT, severity of postprandial symptoms was graded, and breath hydrogen/methane concentrations were measured after ingestion of a combined lactulose nutrient drink every 15 min for 4h. The patients underwent rectal sensitivity (rectal barostat) and OATT (radiopaque markers) investigations. Comorbid conditions (functional dyspepsia, anxiety, depression, and somatization) were assessed with questionnaires. After controlling for comorbid conditions, rectal sensitivity was associated with abdominal pain (p < 0.05), and more rapid OATT was associated with higher severity of abdominal discomfort, rumbling, nausea, and urgency (p < 0.05 for all) both pre- and post-prandially. Postprandial nausea, urgency, and abdominal pain changed differently over time depending on OATT (p < 0.05 for all). OATT, but not rectal sensitivity, was associated with hydrogen and methane concentrations (p=0.002 for both). Trajectories over time of postprandial symptoms and exhaled hydrogen/methane concentrations were correlated with different correlations depending on OATT. This study highlights the importance of oroanal transit and hydrogen and methane production in the pathophysiology of IBS and increases our understanding of pathophysiological factors involved in postprandial symptom generation. Treatments targeting oroanal transit and hydrogen and methane production may improve specific postprandial symptoms.

IntroductionThe prevalence of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) ranges from 7 to 18% over the world. We aimed to assess the prevalence and risk factors of irritable bowel syndrome in adults. MethodologyWe conducted a cross-sectional study of IBS prevalence and risk factors from March to May 2022 at KRL Hospital Islamabad. 300 people were given Pre-validated Performa's. Our research adheres to the principles outlined in the Helsinki Declaration. The PSS was used to measures how much stress a person has felt in the past month.The higher the score, the more stressed the person appears to be. A variety of mental health disorders can be evaluated using this method. Data on dietary and lifestyle factors associated with IBS for the last 12 months was also collected from the participants. ResultsThe majority of patients, 70%, were classed as Grade 1 and 146 (48.66%) reported abdominal pain associated with defecation. 162 (54%) individuals reported high levels of tea consumed, 81 (27%) consumed coffee and 57 (19%) reported carbonated drinks consumed. 139 individuals reported having Vigorous-Intensity activity, out of which 69 (49.64%) spend 60 min of vigorous activity in a day. ConclusionScreening patients for IBS on a regular basis is critical, especially in the younger demographic. If a patient experiences any symptoms of IBS, they should contact their doctor immediately. Consider the care of patients with chronic gastrointestinal complaints, particularly in women and those at greater risk of developing the illness.

Helicobacterpylori Infection-A Risk Factor for Irritable Bowel Syndrome? An Updated Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Nowadays, the relationship between Helicobacter pylori infection (HPI) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) remains controversial. Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between HPI and IBS through a systematic review and meta-analysis based on the current evidence. Methods: We performed a systematic literature search in electronic databases (PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane library) by computer to identify all reports published before 8 August 2021. The odds ratio (OR) and confidence interval (CI) were calculated to evaluate the association between HPI and IBS. Subgroup analyses were conducted for further assessment and exploration of heterogeneity sources. In addition, we assessed publication bias through funnel plots, Egger’s test, and Begg’s test. Finally, we conducted a sensitivity analysis to evaluate the robustness of the results. Results: Thirteen studies with 13,173 participants were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled OR of the association between HPI and IBS was 1.03 (95% CI [0.80,1.31]; p = 0.84). The adjusted OR of the association between HPI and IBS after excluding the studies with confounding factors defined by our team was 1.29 (95% CI [1.03,1.62]; p = 0.03). We found a positive association between HPI and IBS-D (diarrhea subtype) (OR: 1.54; 95% CI [1.22,1.95]; p = 0.0003). The OR of the relationship between cytotoxin-associated gene A (Cag A) positive HPI and IBS was 4.3 (95% CI [0.51,36.17]; p = 0.18). Conclusions: The likelihood of HPI in IBS patients is relatively higher than that of non-IBS participants but not statistically significant, implying that HPI is not significantly associated with IBS, albeit we may underestimate this association. Moreover, we found a positive association between HPI and IBS-D. We also observed an increased likelihood of Cag-A positive HPI in IBS patients than that of non-IBS participants but not statistically significant.

Risk Factors for Abdominal Pain–Related Disorders of Gut–Brain Interaction in Adults and Children: A Systematic Review

Many studies have assessed risk factors of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and other abdominal pain-related disorders of gut-brain interaction (AP-DGBI); however, the role of these factors is unclear due to heterogeneous study designs. The aim of this systematic review was to extensively evaluate the literature and determine clinical risk and protective factors for the presence and persistence of AP-DGBI in children and adults. A PubMed search identified studies investigating potential risk and protective factors for AP-DGBI in adults and children. Inclusion criteria included fully published studies with a control group; exclusion criteria included poor-quality studies (using a validated scale). For each factor, the proportion of studies that found the factor to be a risk factor, protective factor, or neither was summarized. The number of studies, diagnostic criteria, number of subjects, and average study quality rating provided further context. Whenever possible, a meta-analysis generated pooled odds ratios or mean difference. The systematic review included 348 studies. Female sex, gastroenteritis, abuse, stress, psychological disorders, somatic symptoms, and poor sleep were consistent risk factors for developing AP-DGBI in adults and children. In adults, additional risk factors included obesity, smoking, and increased use of medical resources. Protective AP-DGBI factors in adults included social support and optimism; no studies for protective factors were found for children. There are multiple risk factors for AP-DGBI in adults and children. These include female sex, gastroenteritis, abuse, stress, poor sleep, obesity, psychological disorders, and somatic symptoms. Additional studies are needed in children, on protective factors, and on factors associated with persistence of AP-DGBI.

Prevalence and Associated Risk Factors of Irritable Bowel Syndrome Among Female Secondary School students in Ar Rass City, Qassim Region.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common chronic gastrointestinal condition associated with many modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors. To determine the prevalence of IBS and the associated risk factors among female secondary school students in Ar Rass city, Qassim region, Saudi Arabia. A cross-sectional study was conducted from June to August 2021 among female students attending government secondary schools at Ar Rass city, Qassim region. Two schools were selected by simple random sampling. A self-administered questionnaire using Google Form, submitted to the WhatsApp groups of the students, gathered personal data, and behavioral, lifestyle and health background characteristics of the participants. The questionnaire included Rome IV criteria for IBS diagnosis. Out of 612 invited students, 429 responded (response rate: 70.1%). Twenty-eight incomplete questionnaires were excluded leading to 401 participants in the final analysis. The mean (± SD) age of study participants was 17.3 (±2.05) years. The overall prevalence of IBS was 21.4% (n=86); 11.7% (n=47) were already diagnosed; however, 9.7% (n=39) were newly detected in our survey. The factors associated with IBS included frequent consumption of soft drinks (p=0.016), low vegetable consumption (p=0.003), poor mental health (p<0.0001), family history of IBS (p<0.0001) and history of chronic disease (p<0.0001). IBS is prevalent among female secondary school students in Ar Rass city. Unhealthy diet and poor mental health are associated with IBS. Creating awareness regarding IBS and about importance of healthy lifestyle is recommended. School staff need to be trained to promote the physical and mental health of the students.

Prevalence and Influencing Factors of Irritable Bowel Syndrome in Medical Staff: A Meta-Analysis.

BackgroundIrritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common functional digestive tract disease worldwide, with a high prevalence among medical staff. The purpose of this study is to systematically evaluate the prevalence and influencing factors of IBS in medical staff.MethodsWe searched English online databases, including PubMed, The Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Embase, and EBSCOhost. The retrieval time was from database establishment to May of 2021. We screened the literature according to inclusion and exclusion criteria, extracted the relevant information, and evaluated the research quality. A meta-analysis was performed using the Stata 16.0 and Review Manager 5.4.1 software.ResultsA total of 11 English studies from seven countries were included in this study, including 3,360 medical staff. The results of the meta-analysis showed an overall prevalence of IBS among medical staff of 16% [95%CI (0.15 ~ 0.17)] and that shift work (OR 2.27)), poor sleep quality (OR 4.27), and female gender (OR 2.29) are the major influencing factors of medical staff suffering from IBS.ConclusionsThe prevalence of irritable bowel syndrome among medical staff is relatively high, and hospitals can start by looking for targeted interventions from the highly related factors of IBS among medical staff such as shift work patterns, females, and poor sleep quality.
