Niche Theory and Species Range Limits Along Elevational Gradients: Perspectives and Future Directions

Despite two centuries of research, the mechanisms underlying the formation of species’ elevational range limits remain poorly understood. The climatic variability hypothesis highlights the role of climatic conditions in shaping species’ thermal tolerance and distribution ranges, while the species interactions–abiotic stress hypothesis underscores the relative importance of biotic factors and abiotic stress along environmental gradients. We emphasize Darwin's perspective on the ubiquity of interspecific competition across climatic gradients and the importance of understanding how climate modulates biotic interactions to shape species distributions. Niche theory provides a comprehensive framework, combined with empirical research, to explore how environmental gradients influence species traits, leading to context-dependent species interactions that constrain distributions. In particular, the application of the concept of environmentally weighted performance can further elucidate these complex ecological mechanisms. Future research should integrate multiple approaches, including field and laboratory manipulative experiments, theoretical modeling, and interdisciplinary collaboration, to improve our understanding of species distributions in mountain regions and to inform biodiversity conservation strategies in the face of rapid environmental change.

SAR image integration for multi-temporal analysis of Lake Manchar Wetland dynamics using machine learning

The Manchar Lake wetland complex, Pakistan’s largest freshwater-lake, faces unprecedented ecological challenges amidst climate change and human pressures, necessitating urgent, data-driven conservation strategies. This study employs cutting-edge multi-sensor remote sensing techniques to quantify and analyze the dynamic changes in this critical ecosystem from 2015 to 2023, aiming to provide a comprehensive understanding of wetland dynamics for informed management decisions. Integrating Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and Sentinel-2 multispectral imagery, we assessed changes in wetland extent, vegetation health, and land-use patterns using spectral indices and topographic data. Our methodology achieved classification accuracies exceeding 92% across all study years, revealing significant ecosystem fluctuations. Water body extent exhibited a non-linear trend, expanding from 318.5 km² (5%) in 2015 to 397.0 km² (7%) in 2019, before contracting to 369.9 km² (6%) in 2023. This pattern was corroborated by MNDWI values. Concurrently, vegetation covers dramatically increased from 405.5 km² (7%) in 2019 to 1081.6 km² (18%) in 2023. The Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) reflected this trend, decreasing from 0.61 in 2015 to 0.41 in 2019, before recovering to 0.53 in 2023. Land use changes were substantial, with agricultural areas increasing from 118.4 km² (2%) in 2015 to 498.0 km² (8%) in 2023. SAR data consistently supported these observations. Topographic analysis, including the Topographic Wetness Index (TWI), provided crucial insights into wetland distribution and resilience. This comprehensive analysis highlights the complex interplay between natural processes and human influences shaping the Manchar-Lake ecosystem, underscoring the urgent need for adaptive management strategies in the face of rapid environmental change.

Dietary partitioning of fishers and martens in a rapidly changing landscape

Niche partitioning is critical for the stable coexistence of competing species that share limited resources. Yet, niches are dynamic, especially in the face of rapid environmental change. Carnivores exhibit particularly strong forms of competition and are differentially affected by change. Fishers (Pekania pennanti) and martens (Martes caurina) are two species of carnivores that overlap in space, time, and resources. In the Sierra Nevada of California, these two species share habitats that are undergoing a sudden restructuring due to drought and the subsequent mortality of more than half of all trees. Using a long-term dataset from across the affected region of the Sierra Nevada, we quantified the diet, as well as dietary niche overlap and niche shift of fishers and martens during summer months before, during, and after these disturbances and as a function of spatial overlap. The summer diet of fishers and martens did not appear to be affected by change in live forest canopy and tree mortality. While fisher diet was unaffected by elevation, martens exhibited an increasing reliance on vertebrate prey at higher elevations. Our results suggest that during summer months the diet of fishers is highly diverse, even including fungi and insects, but the diet of martens is less diverse and more reliant on vertebrate prey. These different consumption patterns — which were largely unaffected by changing environmental conditions, except elevation — have led to unexpectedly low overlap in trophic niche space during the timeframe measured. Our findings demonstrate that the coexistence of martens and fishers regionally is likely facilitated, in part, through partitioning along the trophic niche axis. If drought conditions persist and lead to continued or increasingly reduced snowpack and altered vegetation, future research should assess how niche partitioning of fishers, martens, and other members of the broader carnivore community will endure.

Pesticide exposure triggers sex-specific inter- and transgenerational effects conditioned by past sexual selection.

Environmental variation often induces plastic responses in organisms that can trigger changes in subsequent generations through non-genetic inheritance mechanisms. Such transgenerational plasticity thus consists of environmentally induced non-random phenotypic modifications that are transmitted through generations. Transgenerational effects may vary according to the sex of the organism experiencing the environmental perturbation, the sex of their descendants or both, but whether they are affected by past sexual selection is unknown. Here, we use experimental evolution on an insect model system to conduct a first test of the involvement of sexual selection history in shaping transgenerational plasticity in the face of rapid environmental change (exposure to pesticide). We manipulated evolutionary history in terms of the intensity of sexual selection for over 80 generations before exposing individuals to the toxicant. We found that sexual selection history constrained adaptation under rapid environmental change. We also detected inter- and transgenerational effects of pesticide exposure in the form of increased fitness and longevity. These cross-generational influences of toxicants were sex dependent (they affected only male descendants), and intergenerational, but not transgenerational, plasticity was modulated by sexual selection history. Our results highlight the complexity of intra-, inter- and transgenerational influences of past selection and environmental stress on phenotypic expression.

Assessing forest fragmentation due to land use changes from 1992 to 2023: A spatio-temporal analysis using remote sensing data

The increasing pressures of urban development and agricultural expansion have significant implications for land use and land cover (LULC) dynamics, particularly in ecologically sensitive regions like the Murree and Kotli Sattian tehsils of the Rawalpindi district in Pakistan. This study's primary objective is to assess spatial variations within each LULC category over three decades (1992–2023) using cross-tabulation in ArcGIS to identify changes in LULC and investigates into forest fragmentation analysis using the Landscape Fragmentation Tool (LFTv2.0) to classify forest into several classes such as patch, edge, perforated, small core, medium core, and large core. Utilizing remote sensing data from Landsat 5 and Landsat 9 satellites, the research focuses on the temporal dynamics in various land classes including Coniferous Forest (CF), Evergreen Forest (EF), Arable Land (AR), Buildup Area (BU), Barren Land (BA), Water (WA), and Grassland (GL). The Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier and ArcGIS software were employed for image processing and classification, ensuring accuracy in categorizing different land types. Our results indicate a notable reduction in forested areas, with Coniferous Forest (CF) decreasing from 363.9 km2, constituting 45.0 % of the area in 1992, to 291.5 km2 (36.0 %) in 2023, representing a total decrease of 72.4 km2. Similarly, Evergreen Forests have also seen a significant reduction, from 177.9 km2 (22.0 %) in 1992 to 99.8 km2 (12.3 %) in 2023, a decrease of 78.1 km2. The study investigates into forest fragmentation analysis using the Landscape Fragmentation Tool (LFTv2.0), revealing an increase in fragmentation and a decrease in large core forests from 20.3 % of the total area in 1992 to 7.2 % in 2023. Additionally, the patch forest area increased from 2.4 % in 1992 to 5.9 % in 2023, indicating significant fragmentation. Transition matrices and a Sankey diagram illustrate the transitions between different LULC classes, providing a comprehensive view of the dynamics of land-use changes and their implications for ecosystem services. These findings highlight the critical need for robust conservation strategies and effective land management practices. The study contributes to the understanding of LULC dynamics and forest fragmentation in the Himalayan region of Pakistan, offering insights essential for future land management and policymaking in the face of rapid environmental changes.

Vulnerability to fluctuations in prey and predation landscape in a central place foraging marine predator

IntroductionHuman-induced environmental change is driving a global redistribution of biodiversity, resulting in shifting prey and predation landscapes. These shifting landscapes can lead to changes in behavior, health, and vital rates, with potential implications for population dynamics.MethodsIn the present study, a state-dependent life-history theory model was developed to investigate the individual- and population-level responses of Australian fur seals (Arctocephalus pusillus doriferus) to changes in prey availability and at-sea mortality risk.ResultsRates of pregnancy, pup nursing, and abortion were unaffected by prey availability in the simulated population. Likewise, on-land and at-sea durations were largely unaffected by prey availability, with more pronounced affects for nonreproductive and pregnant females than for lactating females. There was a strong influence of prey availability on the proportion of females that were concurrently pregnant and lactating, largely due to an increase in pup abandonments under low prey availability scenarios. This effect on pup abandonments also had flow on effects for pup recruitment. Increasing at-sea mortality risk resulted in greater offspring losses due to maternal death. The combined impact of prey availability and at-sea mortality risk on the number of simulated female offspring reaching sexual maturity was substantial.DiscussionConsequently, our results suggest high vulnerability of the Australian fur seal population to shifting prey and predation landscapes. These results indicate a need for continued monitoring of Australian fur seal pup production and population dynamics in the face of rapid environmental change.

Sustainability through Artificial Intelligence in Oil and Gas Industry - A Case Study

Background/Purpose: Systems and procedures for producing and delivering oil and gas are highly expensive and rely on cutting-edge technology. This industry is one that is already exploring the possibilities of artificial intelligence. To keep a competitive edge in the face of rapid environmental change, the industry is spending extensively on artificial intelligence and other data technologies. Objective: The benefits of AI directly address the major issues in the current oilfield. The oil and gas industry are realising the profound impact that AI can have on every industry along the whole value chain. The main problems in today's oilfield are directly addressed by AI's potential. Design/Methodology/Approach: This study focuses on challenges faced by different streams of oil and gas industries and its acceptance and dependency on AI to overcome them. Findings/Result: Now, oil and gas companies may use AI to estimate the value of specific reservoirs, customise drilling and completing plans to the specific geology, and assess the risks related to each well. Originality/Value: This study provides a concise overview of the oil and gas industry’s sustainability using artificial intelligence. Paper type: A case study on how artificial intelligence has influenced the development of the oil and gas industries.

Characterization of trade-offs between immunity and reproduction in the coral species Astrangia poculata.

Living organisms face ubiquitous pathogenic threats and have consequently evolved immune systems to protect against potential invaders. However, many components of the immune system are physiologically costly to maintain and engage, often drawing resources away from other organismal processes such as growth and reproduction. Evidence from a diversity of systems has demonstrated that organisms use complex resource allocation mechanisms to manage competing needs and optimize fitness. However, understanding of resource allocation patterns is limited across taxa. Cnidarians, which include ecologically important organisms like hard corals, have been historically understudied in the context of resource allocations. Improving understanding of resource allocation-associated trade-offs in cnidarians is critical for understanding future ecological dynamics in the face of rapid environmental change. Here, we characterize trade-offs between constitutive immunity and reproduction in the facultatively symbiotic coral Astrangia poculata. Male colonies underwent ex situ spawning and sperm density was quantified. We then examined the effects of variable symbiont density and energetic budget on physiological traits, including immune activity and reproductive investment. Furthermore, we tested for potential trade-offs between immune activity and reproductive investment. We found limited associations between energetic budget and immune metrics; melanin production was significantly positively associated with carbohydrate concentration. However, we failed to document any associations between immunity and reproductive output which would be indicative of trade-offs, possibly due to experimental limitations. Our results provide a preliminary framework for future studies investigating immune trade-offs in cnidarians.

Voices from the deep: Odontocete occurrence patterns relative to oceanographic conditions in the northern California Current System

Odontocetes play an important ecological role as apex predators in the northern California Current System (CCS), which is characterized by seasonal rises in primary productivity fueled by wind-driven upwelling of cold nutrient-rich water. This productivity sustains higher trophic-level prey optimal for deep-diving odontocetes including beaked and sperm whales. Due to the cryptic ecology of these whales, there are few systematic studies of their occurrence across seasons in northern CCS waters. The Holistic Assessment of Living marine resources off Oregon (HALO) Project—a collaboration between Oregon State University and Cornell University—addresses this gap via quarterly vessel-based visual surveys and year-round passive acoustic monitoring (PAM). Here, we detect and classify species-specific odontocete acoustic signals using long-term spectral averages, automated click detection, and unsupervised clustering of semi-continuous PAM data from 10/2021 to 12/2022. Site-specific occurrence of beaked and sperm whales is revealed on hourly to seasonal temporal scales at three recording sites along a depth gradient spanning the continental slope (300 and 630 m water depth) and abyssal plain (2860 m). By relating odontocete detections to dynamic oceanographic conditions from nearby profiling moorings, we identify likely drivers of prey availability influencing predator distribution. These results will inform conservation efforts of cryptic odontocetes in the face of rapid environmental change.

Role of Organizational Justice on Nurse Work Productivity’s Result in Type B Hospitals in Serang

Background: Productivity is the goal of every type of organisation, including nursing services. With high nurse work productivity, the service in hospitals will be better, and the quality of health services can be improved. Increasing productivity is one of the main parameters for every organisation to win the competition in the face of rapid environmental changes. Objective: This study aims to analyse the effect of work discipline, organisational justice, and organisational culture on nurse work productivity in inpatient rooms at Type B Hospitals in Serang, either partially or simultaneously. Method: The method used in this research is quantitative with the type of explanatory causality research. The population in this study were all nurses working in the inpatient room of Dr. Dradjat Prawinegara, with a total of 202 people. The sampling method used is probability sampling with a simple random sampling technique, so the sample size used in this study is 134 respondents. Data analysis used multiple linear regression analysis with SPSS software version 24. Result: The results of this study indicate that work discipline, organisational justice, and organisational culture together have a significant effect on nurse work productivity in inpatient rooms at Type B Hospitals in Serang. Work discipline has a significant effect on nurse work productivity in inpatient rooms at Type B Hospitals in Serang. Organisational justice has a significant effect on nurse work productivity in inpatient rooms at Dr Dradjat Prawiranegara. Organisational culture has a significant effect on nurse work productivity in inpatient rooms at Type B Hospitals in Serang.

Heat-induced maternal effects shape avian eggshell traits and embryo development and phenotype at high incubation temperatures.

Phenotypic plasticity is an important avenue by which organisms may persist in the face of rapid environmental change. Environmental cues experienced by the mother can also influence the phenotype of offspring, a form of plasticity called maternal effects. Maternal effects can adaptively prepare offspring for the environmental conditions they will likely experience; however, their ability to buffer offspring against environmental stressors as embryos is understudied. Using captive zebra finches, we performed a maternal-offspring environmental match-mismatch experiment utilizing a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial design. Mothers were exposed to a mild heat conditioning (38°C) or control (22°C) treatment as juveniles, an acute high heat (42°C) or control (22°C) treatment as adults, then paired for breeding. The eggs produced by those females were incubated at a hyperthermic (38.5°C) or optimal temperature (37.2°C). We found that when mothers were exposed to a mild heat conditioning as juveniles, their embryos exhibited reduced water loss, longer development times, and produced hatchlings with heavier pectoralis muscles when incubated at high incubation temperatures, compared to embryos from control mothers. Mothers exposed to both the mild heat conditioning as juveniles and a high heat stressor as adults produced eggs with a higher density of shell pores and embryos with lower heart rates during development. However, there was a cost when there was a mismatch between maternal and embryo environment. Embryos from these conditioned and heat-stressed mothers had reduced survival at control incubation temperatures, indicating the importance of offspring environment when interpreting potential adaptive effects.

Incorporating phylogenetic conservatism and trait collinearity into machine learning frameworks can better predict macroinvertebrate traits

In the face of rapid environmental changes, understanding and monitoring biological traits and functional diversity are crucial for effective biomonitoring. However, when it comes to freshwater macroinvertebrates, a significant dearth of biological trait data poses a major challenge. In this opinion article, we put forward a machine-learning framework that incorporates phylogenetic conservatism and trait collinearity, aiming to provide a better vision for predicting macroinvertebrate traits in freshwater ecosystems. By adopting this proposed framework, we can advance biomonitoring efforts in freshwater ecosystems. Accurate predictions of macroinvertebrate traits enable us to assess functional diversity, identify environmental stressors, and monitor ecosystem health more effectively. This information is vital for making informed decisions regarding conservation and management strategies, especially in the context of rapidly changing environments.

Coral Reef Population Genomics in an Age of Global Change.

Coral reefs are both exceptionally biodiverse and threatened by climate change and other human activities. Here, we review population genomic processes in coral reef taxa and their importance for understanding responses to global change. Many taxa on coral reefs are characterized by weak genetic drift, extensive gene flow, and strong selection from complex biotic and abiotic environments, which together present a fascinating test of microevolutionary theory. Selection, gene flow, and hybridization have played and will continue to play an important role in the adaptation or extinction of coral reef taxa in the face of rapid environmental change, but research remains exceptionally limited compared to the urgent needs. Critical areas for future investigation include understanding evolutionary potential and the mechanisms of local adaptation, developing historical baselines, and building greater research capacity in the countries where most reef diversity is concentrated.

Financial Availability on Performance of MSMEs: Mediation of Entrepreneurial Orientation and Business Actor’s Rationality

This study investigates how business actors' entrepreneurial orientation and rationality affect MSMEs' performance, as well as how the availability of financing affects that performance. Using a random sampling technique, we surveyed 195 MSMEs from various business fields. The data were analyzed using structural equation modeling and AMOS and SPSS software. We discovered that the mediation of entrepreneurial orientation and decision-making rationality significantly impacted the relationship between financial availability and performance. Adequate funding encourages an entrepreneurial mindset and the development of innovations that improve overall performance. The study suggests that business actors improve their capabilities, including managerial skills, practices, and procedures in the financial sector. When adequate funds are available, they could be used to improve performance. The study adds to the dynamic capability theory by demonstrating that MSMEs must be able to integrate, construct, and reconfigure their financial resources in the face of rapid environmental changes.

Opportunities to advance the synthesis of ecology and evolution.

Despite decades of research on the interactions between ecology and evolution, opportunities still remain to further integrate the two disciplines, especially when considering multispecies systems. Here, we discuss two such opportunities. First, the traditional emphasis on the distinction between evolutionary and ecological processes should be further relaxed as it is particularly unhelpful in the study of microbial communities, where the very notion of species is hard to define. Second, key processes of evolutionary theory such as adaptation should be exported to hierarchical levels higher than populations to make sense of biodiversity dynamics. Together, we argue that broadening our perspective of eco-evolutionary dynamics to be more inclusive of all biodiversity, both phylogenetically and hierarchically, will open up fertile new research directions and help us to address one of the major scientific challenges of our time, that is, to understand and predict changes in biodiversity in the face of rapid environmental change.

Eco-crossover, or environmentally regulated crossing-over, and natural selection are two irreplaceable drivers of adaptive evolution: Eco-crossover hypothesis

The existence of an environmentally regulated version of meiotic crossing-over, or eco-crossover, is proposed, and the main consequences of this hypothesis are considered. Eco-crossover is a key source of partially directed genetic diversity of eukaryotes. In stressful environment, it creates ecologically justified and topologically specific genetic changes, and hence phenotypic variability, with which the selection works. If variability were random, then, in the face of rapid environmental changes, natural selection could not create life-saving adaptations in a timely manner. Owing to the eco-crossover activity, epimutations, i.e., eco-dependently marked chromosomal sites, are transforming into mutations. In its work, eco-crossover uses the eco-stress-dependent versions of circular RNAs (“ecological” circRNAs), which, against the background of eco-stresses, are synthesized as variants of alternative splicing. These ecological circRNAs, binding to homologous epimutations on the homologous parent chromosomes of the meiocyte, involve them in topologically specific recombinations. These recombinations can create random mutations in nonrandom genomic sites. These quasi-random mutations serve as a pivotal source for creating all adaptations of any level of complexity. The drivers of the adaptive evolution of eukaryotes, both in micro- and macroevolution, are two irreplaceable factors – eco-crossover and natural selection.

Rare species disproportionally contribute to functional diversity in managed forests

Functional diversity is linked with critical ecosystem functions, yet its relationship with numerical diversity, e.g. species richness, is not fully understood. The mechanisms linking changes of species richness, e.g. random and non-random species losses and gains, with changes of functional diversity become more relevant in the face of rapid environmental changes. In particular, non-random species changes including rare species may affect functional diversity, and the overall ecosystem function, disproportionately compared to random species changes including common species. In this study, I investigated how changes in numerical diversity of bird assemblages are related to functional diversity, and how the environment, and in particular forest management, influences such a relationship. I collected bird count data in the extensively-managed forest landscape of the Black Forest (Germany), at 82 sampling sites over three years. Data included species richness and abundance per site, and functional traits related to diet and habitat type for each species to compute functional diversity. By partitioning numerical diversity changes into five components using Price Equations, I calculated the contribution of random and non-random species losses and gains, and the abundance of common species, to functional diversity. Then I modelled these contributions as a function of several environmental variables describing broad forest conditions, and including forest management intensity. I found that, beside the major contribution of random species losses to functional diversity, non-random species losses also play a role, indicating that rare species that contribute more to functional diversity are often lost earlier than common species. The overall contribution to functional diversity of species losses is larger than that of species gains, pointing toward an ongoing simplification of the forest bird assemblage. Among all Price components, random species gains were influenced by management intensity, while other components were not influenced by any management variable. This highlight that potential conservation actions may not be effective in halting ecosystem functioning decline, as species gains do not result in increased functional diversity.

Capacity for change: three core attributes of adaptive capacity that bolster restoration efficacy

In the face of rapid environmental change, restoration will need to emphasize innovative approaches that support the long‐term resilience of social and ecological systems. To this end, we highlight the critical, but often overlooked, role of adaptive capacity, which enables restoration practice, governance, and target ecosystems to adapt to directional environmental change. We identify three core attributes of adaptive capacity: (1) diversity, (2) connectivity, and (3) flexibility. For each attribute, we describe key strategies, including enhancing mechanisms of ecological memory, facilitating the generation of beneficial novelty, and developing governance structures that are flexible and anticipatory. These core attributes can also lead to maladaptive outcomes; careful consideration of a social‐ecological system's resilience and vulnerabilities to environmental change will likely be critical to avoid unwanted outcomes. Ultimately, implementing strategies that increase adaptive capacity can bolster restoration efficacy as it seeks to confront the global challenge of rapid environmental change.

DNA metabarcoding of benthic algae and associated eukaryotes from Lake Baikal in the face of rapid environmental changes.

Here we report new data describing the biodiversity of phytobenthic communities based on DNA-metabarcoding using the 18S rDNA marker and the Illumina MiSeq system. The study was initiated due to the blooming of f ilamentous algae (mainly of the genus Spirogyra) and cyanobacteria in the coastal zone of Lake Baikal under climate change and anthropogenic impact. The composition and taxonomic diversity of algae and other organisms associated with them on different sites of Lake Baikal (near Bolshoi Ushkaniy Island, in Listvennichny Bay) and in the Kaya (within the city of Irkutsk, located in the same drainage basin as Lake Baikal) were determined using DNAmetabarcoding. About 15 thousand reads of the 18S rRNA marker were obtained by applying NGS (next-generation sequencing). The species of algae dominating in the number of reads, as well as the diff icult-to-identify taxa (Stramenopiles, Alveolata, Euglenozoa, Chromista, Rhizaria, Amoebozoa, etc.), which play an important role in the functioning and formation of the structure of algal communities, were revealed. The Shannon index of the communities studied ranges from 1.56 to 2.72. The advantages and weaknesses of using DNA-metabarcoding based on the 18S rRNA gene fragment for studying the structure of algal communities are shown. The advantage of this method is the possibility to more fully determine the diversity of eukaryotes taxa, which are diff icult to identify by morphology, without involving a large number of specialists, while the disadvantage of the method is the distortion that may occur during the PCR. Here, ways of solving this problem are proposed. The results of the study show that the analysis of the minor component of the eukaryotic community in samples (organisms with low biomass) consisting of a mixture of multicellular and unicellular organisms requires a read-depths of at least 100,000 sequences per sample. In general, the DNA-metabarcoding method is recommended for studying the structure of algal communities and eukaryotes associated with them.

Using the background of fish photographs to quantify habitat composition in marine ecosystems

Citizen science initiatives that collect opportunistic photos, or recordings, of living organisms (e.g. iNaturalist) are increasingly recognized for their importance in monitoring biodiversity. These projects are focussed primarily on recording the occurrence of individual species in space and time. Each photo potentially also contains additional valuable information. Here, we explored the amount and potential value of background information captured in fish photographs as a method to characterise reef habitats. The habitat in the background of fish photographs shared on iNaturalist was analysed for 6 sites across Australia. To measure accuracy of the habitat data captured in the iNaturalist photos, the habitat composition of each site was compared to standardised photo-quadrats from the citizen science project Reef Life Survey (RLS). Across all sites, 70-85% of the fish photographs from iNaturalist contained discernible biotic habitat in the background. Habitat composition as measured from the background of opportunistic fish photographs was similar to those of standardised surveys from RLS. In the face of rapid environmental change, opportunistic photographs collected by recreational divers represent a complementary way to rapidly and cost-effectively collect habitat data at more reefs and more frequently than is generally feasible with standardised scientific surveys.
