Preparation of X5R type Ni-MLCCs and capacitance response to combined out-field variations

With the continuous development of electronic devices, miniaturization and high capacitance have become important factors in the fabrication of multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) with a Ni internal electrode (Ni-MLCCs). The typical thickness of the dielectric layer of commercial MLCCs is less than 1 μm, which implies a higher capacitance compared to MLCCs with a thicker dielectric layer. In this study, 1210-type Ni-MLCCs were prepared via a tape casting method using a BaTiO3 powder chemically coated with Dy and Ho additives. The high capacitance (390 nF) Ni-MLCC sintered at 1220 °C exhibited a low dielectric loss (tan δ < 2%), high insulation resistance (>9000 MΩ), and temperature stability comparable to that of the EIA X5R standard (capacitance-temperature coefficient (TCC) = ΔC/C25 °C ≤ ±15%, between -55–85 °C). Relaxation behavior was observed between 1 Hz and 10 kHz, following the modified Curie–Weiss law and the Vogel–Fulcher relationship. The capacitive temperature stability of Ni-MLCC is closely related to the applied direct current (DC) bias field. The EIA X7R stability (TCC ≤ ±15%, between -55–125 °C) of the Ni-MLCCs at 1220 °C was gained under dc-bias field 3 and 5 V/μm. The capacitance varied as alternating current (AC) electric fields were applied. The grain shell was sensitive to both the DC bias and AC fields, but the grain core was more sensitive to the DC bias electrical field than the AC field. Furthermore, the ferroelectric response in MLCC decreases with rising temperature.

Silane-treated BaTiO3 ceramic powders for multilayer ceramic capacitor with enhanced dielectric properties

Silane/ceramic combination provides the composites with several advantages from the advancements of new ceramic composite materials with good thermal conductivity, high mechanical and dielectric properties have wide significant applications in electrical and electronic industries. In this study, to enhance the dispersibility of dielectric barium titanate (BaTiO3) ceramic powder and additives for the fabrication of multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs), surface treatment of the precursor of ceramic powder was performed using silane coupling agents. Dielectric ceramic sheets fabricated from ceramic powders that had been surface-treated with different amounts of N-[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl]aniline (TMSPA) which increased the surface gloss. In particular, the dielectric properties of the multilayer ceramic sheet fabricated by stacking sheets from the TMSPA-treated ceramic powder sintering at 1200 °C, it was confirmed that the dielectric constant increased from 881 to 2382 and the dielectric loss dropped from 1.96 to 1.34% with utilization of the TMSPA treatment. The physical and dielectric properties of the TMSPA-treated multilayer ceramic sheet were also determined by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, glossmetry, and electrochemical impedance analysis. The results revealed that the TMSPA-modified BaTiO3 surfaces considerably increased the dielectric property of the fabricated nanocomposite.

Preparation and characterization of ultra-low-temperature of (BiAg)0.5MoO4 dielectric ceramic doped with Y2O3

This paper reports on the use of solid-phase sintering to prepare (BiAg)0.5MoO4 (BAMO) ceramic doped with Yttrium oxide (Y2O3), which is less expensive than the dopants currently used in the commercial formulation of powders for the fabrication of multilayer ceramic capacitors. Experiments were conducted to determine the means by which Y2O3 doping concentration and sintering temperature affect the phase evolution, microstructure, and dielectric properties of BAMO ceramic. Our results reveal the following important findings. Sintering Y2O3-doped BAMO ceramic at 600 °C resulted in the formation of secondary phases (Bi2Mo2O9 and γ"-Bi2MoO6) and constrained grain growth. Sintering at 600 °C promoted the precipitation of silver ions (Ag+) from the starting material (Ag2O) to agglomerate at grain boundaries, leading to a decrease in insulation resistance and breakdown voltage. Interestingly, 5 wt% Y2O3-doped BAMO ceramic sintered at 600 °C presented good dielectric characteristics: εr = 26.6, Q × f value = 22194 GHz, and temperature coefficient of resonant frequency = +14 ppm/°C. Our findings demonstrate that single-phase BAMO ceramic with good density characteristics can be produced via sintering at 600 °C for 1 h. The ultra-low-temperature production of this dielectric material would allow for co-firing with aluminum electrode to further reduce manufacturing costs.

Multilayer capacitors with bismuth copper tantalate dielectric fabricated in LTCC technology

Purpose The work was aimed at preparation of green tapes based on a new material Bi2/3CuTa4O12, to achieve spontaneously formation of an internal barrier layer capacitor (IBLC), fabrication of multilayer elements using low temperature cofired ceramics (LTCC) technology and their characterization. Design/methodology/approach The study focused on tape casting, lamination and co-sintering procedures and dielectric properties of Bi2/3CuTa4O12 multilayer capacitors. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) studies of the ceramic elements were performed. Impedance spectroscopy was used for characterization of dielectric properties in the frequency range of 0.1 Hz to −2 MHz and in the temperature range from −55 to 400°C. DC conductivity was investigated in the temperature range 20 to 740°C. Findings SEM observations revealed a good compatibility of the applied commercial Pt paste with the ceramic layers. The EDS microanalysis showed a higher content of oxygen at grain boundaries. The dominant dielectric response, which was recorded in the low frequency range and at temperatures above 0°C, was attributed to grain boundaries. The dielectric response at low temperatures and/or high frequencies was related to grains. The fabricated multilayer capacitors based on Bi2/3CuTa4O12 exhibited a high specific capacitance. Originality/value A new material Bi2/3CuTa4O12 was applied for preparation of green ceramic tapes and utilized for fabrication of multilayer ceramic capacitors using the LTCC technology. This material belongs to the group of high permittivity nonferroelectric compounds with a complex perovskite structure of CaCu3Ti4O12, that causes the spontaneously formation of IBLCs.

Effect of Li3PO4 addition on the sintering temperature, phase, microstructure, and electrical properties of BaTiO3

Decreasing the sintering temperature of BaTiO3 without deteriorating the dielectric properties is technologically important in the fabrication of multi-layer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs). Consequently, ceramic formulations based on the (1 − x)BaTiO3–xLi3PO4 (x = 0, 0.01, 0.03, 0.05, and 0.1) were prepared. The use of Li3PO4 as a sintering aid lowered the optimum sintering temperature from 1350 to 1150 °C but X-ray diffraction revealed the formation of BaLiPO4 for x = 0.01–0.05 and an additional secondary LiPO3 phase at x = 0.1. The room temperature dielectric constant decreased from ~4288 to ~3600 and the remnant polarization and coercive field also decreased from 6.70 to 3 µC/cm2 and 3.32 to 2.5 kV/cm, respectively, as x increased from 0 to 0.05 but more importantly the phase transition temperature remained essentially constant, an important factor in the fabrication of temperature stable devices. Moreover, the bulk and grain boundary conductivity decreased as x increased to 0.05, possibly related to a decrease in the grain size from 50 to 1 μm. These results suggest that Li3PO4 may have technological benefits in the fabrication of MLCCs.

Stability of Aqueous Barium Titanate Suspensions for MLCC Inkjet Printing

BaTiO3‐based materials are currently used for the fabrication of multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCC) because of their high dielectric properties. The inkjet printing (IJP) process can be used to fabricate MLCC of complex configurations by integrating internal electrodes and dielectric layers in a single step using a multi printing‐head system. Stabilized aqueous suspensions of BaTiO3‐based powders are required to obtain dielectric inks adapted to IJP. This study investigates the influence of BaTiO3 powder hydrolysis in water on the surface chemistry and stability in relationship with the milling step used to adjust the powder grain size to IJP. Optimum parameters for a good stability of BaTiO3 suspensions are identified. The selected dispersant is a polyacrylate (PAA) for which the content is adjusted to minimize the sedimentation rates as required by IJP. Moreover, the addition of ethylene glycol is shown to be necessary to avoid the formation of a gel structure which could result from the interaction of borates ions leached from the surface of BaTiO3 with the PAA dispersant. A mechanism of gel formation is proposed.

Fabrication of CaCu3Ti4O12 Multilayer Capacitors, Their Microstructure and Dielectric Properties

The high-permittivity material CaCu3Ti4O12, being a naturally formed internal barrier layer capacitor, was utilized for preparation of slurries for tape casting and fabrication of multilayer ceramic capacitors. The dielectric properties of capacitors were studied in a wide frequency range of 0.1 Hz – 2 MHz and in the temperature range from −55 to 400°C. The dominant response recorded at low frequency range and at temperatures above 150°C was assigned to grain boundaries. The dielectric response at low temperatures and/or high frequencies was attributed to grains. SEM and EDS studies showed heterogeneous microstructure and composition of ceramic layers. The fabricated multilayer capacitors exhibit low sintering temperature, good compatibility of ceramic layers with the applied commercial conductive pastes, high specific capacitance and a relatively low temperature coefficient of capacitance.

Microstructure And Dielectric Relaxation Of BT And ST Doped Ba(Fe0.5Nb0.5)O3 ceramics For Sensor Applications

Recently a new wave of interest has risen on complex perovskite structure due to their wide use in fabrication of multilayer ceramic capacitors, electrostrictive actuators, and electromechanical transducers. The polycrystalline ceramics of Ba(Fe0.5Nb0.5)O3 (BFN) and its solid solutions 0.89Ba(Fe0.5Nb0.5)O3-0.11BaTiO3 (BFN-BT11) and 0.89Ba(Fe0.5Nb0.5)O3-0.11SrTiO3 (BFN-ST11) were fabricated by a solid-state reaction Method. Processing parameters such as calcination temperature, sintering temperature and sintering durations were optimized to get best dielectric properties. It was found that the above ceramics sintered at 1250°C for 6 hours exhibited maximum density and uniform microstructure. X-ray diffraction studies of the compound showed the formation of single-phase monoclinic crystal structure at room temperature. Surface morphology of the compounds was studied by Scanning electron microscope (SEM). The effects of BaTiO3 and SrTiO3 substitution on the structure and on the electrical and ferroelectric properties of Ba(Fe0.5Nb0.5)O3 samples have been studied by performing x-ray diffraction and dielectric measurements. The electrical properties of the samples were investigated in a frequency range of 100 Hz - 1 MHz and temperature range of 30-350 °C using complex impedance spectroscopic technique. The frequency-dependent electrical data are also analyzed in the framework of conductivity and impedance formalisms.

Relaxor ferroelectric behavior of La substituted BPZT ceramics

Abstract Barium titanate (BT) based compounds have been of great importance in the fabrication of multilayer ceramic capacitors. Several substitutions are used to tailor its structural, electrical and ferroelectric properties. Substituent like zirconium (Zr) for titanium results in decrease in non-centrosymmetric tetragonal to centrosymmetric cubic phase transition temperature (Curie temperature). Whereas substituent like lead (Pb) for barium results in the increase in the Curie temperature. Here we are reporting effect of lanthanum (La) substitution on the properties of Zr and Pb co-substituted BT. The system Ba 0.80− x La x Pb 0.20 Ti 0.90 Zr 0.10 O 3 with x = 0 and 0.01 was selected for study of structural and dielectric properties. Samples were prepared using solid state ceramic route. X-ray diffraction studies (XRD) were used to confirm single phase structure. Dielectric properties were studied as a function of frequency and temperature. Composition with x = 0.01 was found to show relaxor behavior.

Synthesis and Characterization of Ba(Zr0.15Ti0.85)O3 Nano Powders by Oxalate Precipitation Method

Barium zirconate titanate (BZT) is considered to be an important dielectric material for the fabrication of multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs). The synthesis of nanocrystalline powders of high purity is the key to improving the performance of BZT-based ceramics. In this study, we developed Ba(Zr0.15Ti0.85)O3 nano powders with a perovskite structure and a homogeneous granularity through the oxalate precipitation method. The average particle size of the powders can be controlled from 30 to 100 nm at different calcining temperatures. The sintering property of the powders is superior to that of powders prepared by the conventional solid-state method, such that the more compact ceramics with a smaller grain size can be obtained at a sintering temperature of 1250 °C. The dielectric property of the ferroelectric-powder-based ceramics was so excellent for the development of dielectric materials for base-metal electrode multilayer ceramic capacitors (BME MLCCs) with a large capacitance.

Characterisation of a PdCl 2/SnCl 2 electroless plating catalyst system adsorbed on barium titanate-based electroactive ceramics

A PdCl 2/SnCl 2 metallisation catalyst system, of the type used to activate non-conducting surfaces for electroless metal deposition, has been characterised by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The substrate is a barium titanate (BaTiO 3)-based electroactive ceramic of the type used in the fabrication of multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCC). The treatment of the substrate surface with the PdCl 2/SnCl 2 “sensitiser” solution leads to the adsorption of catalytically inactive compounds of palladium and tin. Subsequent treatment of this surface with an “accelerator” solution removes excess oxides, hydroxides and salts of tin thereby leaving the active catalyst species, Pd x Sn y , on the surface. Such sites, on exposure to the appropriete electroless plating bath, are then responsible for the metal deposition. In this study, the chemical state and relative quantities of the various surface species present after each of the processing stages have been determined by XPS. The surface roughness of the substrate results in less of the tin compounds present thereon being removed on washing the catalysed surface in the accelerator solution than normally reported for such systems, thereby affecting the measured Pd: Sn ratio. SEM studies show that the accelerator solution treatment generates crystalline areas, which may be a result of coagulation of the Pd x Sn y particles present, in the otherwise amorphous catalyst coating.

Barrier layer multilayer ceramic capacitor processing: effects of termination and plating process parameters

The authors report studies on the effects of termination and plating process parameters on fabrication of multilayer ceramic capacitors intended for use as surface-mount devices. The parameters in this study included: three capacitor lots, eight termination ink types, seven termination band heights, two termination crown heights, the number of columns for nickel plating, and the time and current density for solder plating. Fifty experiments were performed; nine of these experiments were repeated to estimate experimental error. As response variables, 1830 data points each were measured for capacitance, dissipation factor (DF), and internal resistance. Four of the termination inks can be ranked together as statistically better than the other four studied. They are Dupont 4506, A, B, and dual-layer (4506 fired, 10 mils/1172D). A and B are inks formulated for the AT&T dielectric by a commercial vendor. B is ranked best for DF, DF spread, and conductance and is indistinguishable (at 90% confidence levels) from the other three for conductance spread. Termination crown height and bandwidth and solder plating had significant effects whereas nickel plating had no effect. >

Fabrication of Multilayer Ceramic Capacitors by Metal Impregnation

Ceramic units were fabricated having internal porous layers which extend to two edge faces of the units. The porous layers were analogous to the internal noble metal electrode layers of conventional ceramic multilayer capacitors. By impregnating the porous regions with conductive materials such as Ag, Pb, or Sn, capacitors were formed. Scanning electron microscopy was used to examine the structures of the porous regions and of the impregnated metals. An end termination technique was developed for use with injected internal electrodes of low melting point metals Units were made having electrical characteristics similar to conventionally prepared units with noble metal internal electrodes.
