β-phase formation of poly(vinylidene fluoride) foam based on the porous morphology control via supercritical carbon dioxide

The increase of electroactive β phase of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) is important in energy harvesting applications. In this work, a green method of supercritical CO2 physical foaming was applied to obtain the PVDF foams with high content of β-crystal by utilizing the biaxial stretching when the cells grew, which were applied in the field of piezoelectric sensors. By changing the foaming condition, the PVDF foams with various structures were obtained, and a comprehensive study on the crystal transformation of them was carried out. The PVDF foam with increased β crystals content was more accessible to obtain at a high saturation pressure, corresponding to the large expansion ratio and small cell size. The acquisition of β crystals mainly came from the α-β solid-solid phase transformation during decompression, rather than the annealing process. Due to the introduction of cell structure, the piezoelectric output performance of the sample was effectively amplified. The produced PVDF foam with the β-crystal content of 30%, exhibited the low density of 0.11 g/cm3 and the highest piezoelectric output of 4.1 V (corresponding to a specific voltage of 35 V‧cm3/g). This foaming strategy provides guidance for lightweight design and high-performance fabrication of piezoelectric materials.

Multicolor lignin-derived carbon quantum dots: Controllable synthesis and photocatalytic applications

The cost-effective, high-performance fabrication of multicolor carbon quantum dots (CQDs) from biomass is critical to its prospective application. Lignin, with its phenylpropane structural unit and abundant functional groups, is a reliable precursor for the formation of high-quality CQDs. Here, CQDs from renewable lignin were successfully prepared via a two-step method, and controllable preparation of CQDs to emit blue, green, yellow, and red fluorescence was achieved by adjusting the N-containing acid dopant. The investigated fluorescence mechanism revealed that the energy bandgap of the lignin-derived CQDs decreased and the emission wavelength redshifted as the graphitization degree and number of C=O surface groups increased. The light absorption region of the Bi7O9I3 photocatalysts modified with blue CQDs to red CQDs gradually broadened in the redshifted direction. In particular, compared with pure Bi7O9I3 (70.9%), the red CQDs-modified Bi7O9I3 (RCQD/BOI) can remove 94.7% of antibiotics within 60 min of light irradiation. The superior photocatalytic activity of RCQD/BOI is attributed to the established internal electric field that accelerates charge transfer and effectively separates the photogenerated e+-h+ inside Bi7O9I3. Furthermore, through radical capture, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiments validated the photocatalytic mechanism of RCQD/BOI and revealed that h+, O2− and OH are key reactants in the photocatalytic degradation process. This promising and sustainable approach for the synthesis of multicolor lignin-derived CQDs opens the avenue of high-value utilization of biomass resources, green production of CQDs nanomaterials, and efficient development of CQDs-based photocatalysts for wastewater treatment.

Solvent-regulated self-assembled carbon nitride for photocatalytic reduction of U(VI) in water.

Manufacturing high-performance and reusable materials from radioactive uranium-containing wastewater remains a significant challenge. Herein, a supramolecular self-assembly strategy was proposed, using melamine and cyanuric acid as precursors and using intermolecular hydrogen bond force to form carbon nitride (CN-D) in different solvents through a single thermal polymerization strategy. Supramolecular self-assembly method is a promising strategy to synthesize a novel carbon nitride with molecular regulatory properties. In addition, 98% of U(VI) in wastewater can be removed by using CN-D for 60min under visible light. After five cycles of recycling, more than 95% of U(VI) can still be reduced, indicating that it has good recyclability and reusability. This study not only provides an efficient photocatalytic method of uranium reduction, but also provides a new method for self-assembly synthesis.

A novel magnetic field assisted powder arc additive manufacturing for Ti60 titanium alloy: Method, microstructure and mechanical properties

Due to the rapid heating-cooling process and unstable keyhole, pore defects are easily formed during the high energy beam-powder additive manufacturing (AM) process, posing great challenges to the high-performance manufacturing of aerospace components. Using an arc with lower energy density as a heat source can effectively avoid these defects, but its matching raw materials are limited to wire. In this paper, a novel magnetic field assisted powder arc additive manufacturing (MFA-PAAM) method has been proposed, which combines arc heat source and powder raw material to achieve dense metal parts. A transverse magnetic field (TMF) was introduced to solve the powder spattering problem which impacts the stability of the PAAM process, by regulating the direction of the arc plasma flow and the arc pressure. The unique melting behavior of the powder under arc heating was captured by a high-speed camera, which can be summarized into two steps: balling and adsorption by the molten pool. And the well-formed and fully dense Ti60 high-temperature titanium alloy wall components were successfully manufactured using the self-developed equipment. The microstructure of the thin-wall component is dominated by basket-weave distributed α laths and few β sheets remaining at their boundaries. A layered periodic distribution along the building direction was observed, which is mainly distinguished from the content and morphology of the β phase. The average ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and elongation to failure in the travelling direction are 1003.2 MPa and 15.1%, while the average UTS and elongation along the building direction are 1009.3 MPa and 16.6%, respectively. The fracture morphologies in both directions are characterized by ductile fracture. The MFA-PAAM technique shows great potential for fabricating materials that are difficult to be drawn into wires with high efficiency and performance.

Fabrication of high performance based deep-blue OLED with benzodioxin-6-amine-styryl-triphenylamine and carbazole hosts as electroluminescent materials

The present study reports synthesis of phenathroimidazole derivatives structures following donor–acceptor relation for high performance deep-blue light emitting diodes. Herein, methyl substituted benzodioxin-6-amine phenanthroimidazoles Cz-SBDPI and TPA-SBDPI derivatives that provide the blue light were designed and synthesized. These Cz-SBDPI and TPA-SBDPI show higher glass transition (Tg) temperatures of 199 and 194 °C and demonstrate enhanced thermal properties. Apart from enhanced thermal stability these compounds also exhibit superior photophysical, electrochemical and electroluminescent properties. The non-doped carbazole based device display improved electroluminescent performances than those of TPA-based devices. The strong orbital-coupling due to decreased energy barrier between Cz-SBDPI transitions result in deep blue emission with CIE—0.15, 0.06. For non-doped Cz-SBDPI device; high L (brightness):12,984 cd/m2; ηc (current efficiency): 5.9 cd/A; ηp (power efficiency): 5.7 lm/W and ηex (external quantum efficiency): 6.2% was observed. The results show that the D–A emitters can serve as simple but also as an effective approach to devise cheap electroluminescent materials that has high efficiency and can serve as OLED devices.

Performance Improvement for the CuCrZr Alloy Produced by Laser Powder Bed Fusion Using the Remelting Process.

Owing to the high optical reflectivity of copper powder, the high-performance fabrication of copper alloys in the laser additive manufacturing (AM) field is problematic. To tackle this issue, this study employs the remelting process during laser powder bed fusion AM to fabricate defect-free and high-performance CuCrZr alloy. Compared to the non-remelting process, the remelting process yields finer grains, smaller precipitates, denser dislocations, and smaller dislocation cells. It realizes not only the dense molding of high laser reflectivity powders but also excellent mechanical properties and electrical conductivity (with an ultimate tensile strength of 329 MPa and conductivity of 96% IACS) without post-heat treatment. Furthermore, this study elucidates the influence of complex thermal gradients and multiple thermal cycles on the manufacturing process under the remelting process, as well as the internal mechanisms of microstructure evolution and performance improvement.

Comparison of electron-beam-welded joints manufactured by rolled and selective laser melted reduced activation ferritic/martensitic steel

As the core component of China Fusion Engineering Test Reactor (CFETR), the forming and manufacturing of the first wall faces severe challenges due to the constraints of materials, service environment and geometric structure. The microstructure and mechanical properties of welded joints obtained by rolled and laser selective melted (SLMed) reduced activation ferritic/martensitic (RAFM) steel were investigated in depth. The microstructure analysis results showed that the weld metal (WM) was composed of coarse lath martensite and δ-ferrite, while the microstructure were mainly coarse grains in heat affected zone (HAZ) which was easy to break. The average grains size of SLMed RAFM steel (S-RAFMs) was smaller than that of rolled RAFM steel (R-RAFMs), since the rapid melting and solidification of laser in the additive manufacturing process prevented grains to grow. The microstructure of R-RAFMs joint was relatively more uniform and there was no obvious texture and preferred orientation, while the WM of S-RAFMs joint had a weak cubic texture. The results of mechanical properties showed that the S-RAFMs joints exhibited higher strength (UTS = 697.46 MPa) and the R-RAFMs joints exhibited better plasticity (EL = 13.49 %) under the same tensile conditions. The tensile and impact fracture morphologies showed that the fracture mechanism of two joints was ductile-brittle mixed fracture, and the dimples of R-RAFMs joints were finer and denser. It was clearly observed that the hardness of WM (∼390–430 HV0.3) was higher than that of the base metal (BM) (∼190–230 HV0.3) from the hardness distributions along the width directions. The average hardness of BM in R-RAFMs joint (227 HV0.3) was lower than S-RAFMs joint (197.3 HV0.3), which was mainly related to the fine grain strengthening effect during SLM forming. The above results may provide theoretical guidance for the high-performance manufacturing of the first wall and promote the application of SLM and EBW technology in the field of nuclear fusion.

(Invited) Modelling and Experiments to Guide Scale-up of Structured Electrode Manufacturing for Fast-Charging and Long-Life Li-Ion Cells

For widespread adoption of electric vehicles, lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) need to achieve energy densities of around 350 Wh/kg, cost less than $100/Wh, and be able to charge quickly within around 15 minutes. To achieve this aim, the material properties of lithium-ion electrodes need to be optimized across multiple length scales, from particle to cell. Leveraging advanced characterization techniques to acquire representative particle- and electrode-level microstructures, we develop models to simulate the behavior of individual particles and novel electrode architectures that are feasible to synthesize and scale up to manufacture high performance batteries. We then demonstrate manufacturing of the novel electrode architectures at pilot scale roll-to-roll processing using high-speed laser-ablation to tune the electrode architecture. Guided by multi-scale models, we observe substantial improvements in cell performance.For the particle level optimization, the primary objective is to develop a predictive cathode-particle cracking model that captures secondary-particle fracture dynamics, relate damage to observed capacity fade, and provide design criteria for future cathode development. The novel coupled electrochemistry-transport-mechanics model is implemented on realistic three-dimensional LiNixMnyCozO2 (NMC) secondary particles. Realistic secondary particles are generated using statistically representative particle generation software. The generated particle architecture is used in chemo-mechanical models to simulate Li (de)intercalation during cycling. The model considers diffusion-induced stress, mismatch strain, and damage evolution coupled through the spatial and temporal evolution of geometric, transport, and mechanical properties. Contrary to most cathode-cracking models, instead of a cohesive-zone implementation, a continuum-damage model is used. Additionally, the model simulates several realistic secondary particle geometries to study the effect of secondary-particle size and grain size on damage. The model is expected to provide insights into ideal cathode geometries (e.g., grain morphology, orientation, and particle sizes) and optimal cathode-sensitive charge-protocol development.For electrode level optimization, structuring the electrode with channels to provide straight diffusion paths along the electrode thickness is a promising approach with demonstrated improved capacity retention at fast charge. The optimal shape and spatial distribution of these channels, that together form the so-called Secondary Pore Network (SPN), taking into consideration the manufacturing technique limitations, is however still unknown. Battery manufacturing cost is another key limiting factor for the wide adoption of electric vehicles. The electrolyte wetting process is an expensive step as complete infiltration can takes days, thus requiring expensive storage space and time. Structured electrodes have also demonstrated reduced wetting time as channels offer highways indifferently for capillary-driven or concentration gradient-driven transport mechanisms. However, the optimal channel pattern for enhanced wetting is also unknown. In this work, we identify both optimal patterns, for fast charging, and for fast wetting, independently, through use of a genetic algorithm (GA). The final proposed structured electrode is therefore the baseline porous matrix, a Secondary Pore Network (SPN) tailored for fast charging, and a Tertiary Pore Network (TPN) tailored for fast wetting, with less than 10% of active material removed in total.High-speed laser-ablation is applied to manufacturing this electrode architecture. Laser ablation is a scalable technique for decreasing the effective tortuosity of electrodes by selectively removing material with high precision. Applied to thick electrode coatings, this work focuses on understanding the impact of laser ablation on electrode material properties at the beginning of life and synergistic impacts of ablated channels on cell performance throughout their cycle life. Post laser ablation, local changes in chemistry, crystallography, and morphology of the laser-impacted electrode regions are investigated. It is shown that femtosecond pulsed laser ablation can achieve high-rate material removal with minor material damage locally at the interface of the impacted zones. The capacity achieved during a 6C (10 min) constant-current constant-voltage charge to 4.2 V improved from 1 mAh cm−2 for the non-ablated electrodes to almost 2 mAh cm−2 for the ablated electrodes. This benefit is attributed to a synergistic effect of enhanced wetting and decreased electrode tortuosity. The benefit was maintained for over 120 cycles, and upon disassembly decreased Li-plating on the graphite anode was observed.From the particle to the electrode level, we demonstrate that there remains ample opportunity for optimizing the material properties of conventional electrode chemistries for faster charging and longer-life performance. Our combined use of advanced characterization, modelling, and data-guided manufacturing shows that a multi-scale and multi-modal approach can be applied to build electrodes from the particle up and achieve enhanced electrochemical performance at the cell level through advanced and scalable manufacturing techniques. Improved structural efficiency in composite manufacturing via hammered printing for large-curvature fiber paths

Maximizing the structural efficiency of composite materials is often limited by the minimum turning radius of fibers in composite manufacturing. Neglected defects, such as local fiber buckling, become more pronounced in regions with a large curvature, leading to reduced load-carrying capabilities and a deviation from the target design specifications. This study introduces “hammered printing” as a novel approach for achieving a large curvature of the fiber path in composite manufacturing. By utilizing the transition of the modulus with temperature of a thermoset epoxy pre-polymer, the proposed hammered printing technique generates a unique pressure effect that improves adhesion between the fiber tow and the substrate. This enables the production of accurate and uniform composite structures with a minimum curvature radius of 2 mm, while reducing the occurrence of wrinkling and bending deformations. A continuous fiber path with a small radius (2 mm) for open-hole plates was accurately printed using this printing pattern. Compared with conventional laminates and drilled composites, the obtained printed samples exhibit 75.3% and 28.8% increments in the tensile and bearing strengths, respectively, indicating that this continuous small-radius fiber path can effectively retain the strength and safety of fastened composite parts. Finally, comparisons indicate the great potential of the proposed technique as a large-curvature-path and high-performance manufacturing alternative for the cutout of composite assemblies in the aerospace and related engineering industries.

Effect of Core Hole Diameter on Tensile and Fatigue Properties of the Helically Formed Internal Thread in AlSi10MnMg Cast Alloys

The manufacturing of internal thread using the helical thread forming process (Punch Tap) as a novel high-performance manufacturing technology provides high productivity by reducing the tool path, which can save manufacturing time up to 75% compared to the conventional thread forming process. For instance, cast gearboxes in the transport sector consisting of numerous internal threads can benefit from this manufacturing method to realize detachable joints. While the required core hole diameter for conventional (cut) tapping depends on the thread dimension, this diameter depends either on the material properties for the thread forming process. The proper core hole diameter according to material flow possibility enables forming of complete thread profiles, which can consequently enhance the mechanical properties of the thread. This study aims to analyze the effect of the core hole diameter on the quality of the formed threads in AlSi10MnMg cast profiles. M6 threads were formed into the pre-drilled core holes with two different diameters. CT-scan analysis indicated that reducing the core hole diameter decreases the inner volume of the formed internal thread, which is justified by better material flow and complete forming of the thread profiles. Adaptation of the manufacturing parameters according to the material properties enhanced the geometry of the formed thread profiles. This enhancement increased the tensile and fatigue strengths of the detachable joints by subjecting the four initially formed threads at the top of manufactured nuts to the static and cyclic loads.

Computer vision defect detection on unseen backgrounds for manufacturing inspection

Visual defect detection is an important aspect of quality inspection. High performance manufacturing can benefit from automating defect detection, and deep learning techniques are the current state of the art for this computer vision task. The premise of deep learning is that an over parameterized model learns to generalize in performing a task such as classification or object detection by exposure to a wide variety of training examples. In the canonical example, a classifier that has seen thousands of pictures of dogs and cats in different situations and backgrounds will be able to generalize to tell one animal from the other in a newly obtained photo. The assumption that the training data contains great variety is not met in typical manufacturing data sets. Data is highly repetitive and mostly represents defect-free products, meaning there are few images of defects or deviations to learn from. In this training regime, deep learning models are easily over-fit to the training data and can fail to detect defects in the face of variations such as position, lighting, or data drift. In this work, we explore training defect detection models with images of defects on different backgrounds and in different locations, in order to approximate the exposure to highly diverse data sets that is an assumption of a well-trained deep learning model. We demonstrate how models trained on diverse images containing a common defect type can pick defects out in new circumstances. Such generic models could be more robust to new defects not found in data collected for training, and can reduce data collection impediments to implementing visual inspection on production lines. Additionally, we demonstrate that object detection models trained to predict a label and bounding box outperform classifiers that predict a label only on held out test data typical of manufacturing inspection tasks. Finally, we studied the factors that affect generalization in order to train models that work under a wider range of conditions.

Fabrication of High-Performance Insulated Metal Substrates Employing h-BN Mixture/Epoxy Composite Coated on Roughened Copper Plate

In this work, an Insulated Metal Substrate (IMS) for packaging high-power electronic devices was created using hexagonal Boron Nitride (h-BN) mixture-based Thermally Conductive Adhesive (TCA) and copper plate with a matte side. Mechanical exfoliation of micron-scale BN particles results in a BN mixture containing h-BN nanosheets, micron particles, and nanoparticles. TCA was synthesized by dispersing a 40 % BN mixture modified by γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (KH550) into epoxy resin. The TCA has a relatively high thermal conductivity of 4.48 W·m-1·K-1 and a breakdown strength of 15.32 kV·mm-1. As the TCA film was coated on the matte side of the copper plate, the peel strength can reach 1.63 N·mm-1, indicating excellent practicality in the field of electronic packaging.

Workability optimization and microstructure regulation for a multi-angular extrusion process of AZ80 magnesium alloy

Engineering stability control of microstructure evolution and precision forming is a key technical issue for the high-performance manufacturing of magnesium alloy components. In this paper, a fine-grain processing window was proposed for the workability optimization and microstructure control of AZ80 magnesium alloy. The hot activation energy map (AEM) and processing map (PM) were established to analyze the hot-working properties and microstructural mechanisms, respectively. The internal state variable (ISV) based finite element (FE) model was introduced to predict the evolutions of grain size and microstructure homogeneity with processing parameters during multi-angular extrusion process. The fine-grain processing window was used to form a magnesium alloy plate. Fine microstructure and good forming performance were obtained with the optimized processing parameters at the complete DRX domain. Forming at the processing instability domain exhibited flow defects and microstructure heterogeneity. The above research can be applied to the processing parameter optimization and microstructure regulation during hot forming processes of magnesium alloy.

Research on Multiscale Modeling and Experiment of CFRP Milling.

High-quality milling of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites is of great importance for the high-performance manufacturing of structures made of this hard-to-machine material. In this paper, a multiscale finite element (FE) model, considering the thermal-mechanical coupling effect, was developed to simulate the milling process and reveal its material removal mechanism. The corresponding milling experiments were conducted to validate the simulated cutting forces and temperature, which were in good agreement with the experiment results. In the macroscale model, the Hashin failure criteria were used to estimate the failure of the composites. In the microscale model, the fibers, matrix, and the fiber-matrix interface were modeled separately, to investigate the mechanisms of material removal behavior during milling, among fiber breakage, matrix cracking, and fiber-matrix debonding. Based on the macroscale numerical and experimental results, the higher cutting speed was demonstrated to improve the surface quality of CFRP milling. According to the results from the microscale model, the material removal mechanism varies depending on the orientation of the fibers and can be divided into four stages. The outcome of this work provides guidelines to further investigate optimal manufacturing parameters for the milling of CFRP composites and their cutting mechanisms.

The impact of anticipation of new technologies on operational and environmental performance: a strategy-structure-capabilities-performance perspective

ABSTRACT In today’s volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous environment, it is crucial for management to determine how to develop and maintain highly operational, sustainable organisations amid digitalisation. Digitalisation creates conditions for the emergence of new technologies, leading to heightened anticipation in this dynamic setting. However, their effects on firm performance are inconsistent. This study adopts the ‘Strategy-Structure-Capabilities-Performance’ framework to investigate how firms align the anticipation of new technologies (strategy), horizontal integration (structure), and agility (capability) to achieve remarkable operational and environmental performance. Data from a high-performance manufacturing database was used to identify 195 firms across 15 countries. The proposed model was assessed through regression and structural equation modelling. The findings imply that: (1) anticipation of new technologies contributes to the development of agility, (2) this anticipation, when aligned with horizontal integration, further enhances agility, and (3) increased agility can significantly improve both operational and environmental performance.

Longitudinal-Torsional Ultrasonic Grinding of GCr15: Development of Longitudinal-Torsional Ultrasonic System and Prediction of Surface Topography.

The common material of bearing rings is GCr15 bearing steel which is a typical difficult-to-machine material. As an important working surface of the bearing, the inner surface of the raceway plays a vital role in the performance of the bearing. As an important means to solve the high-performance manufacturing of difficult-to-machine materials, longitudinal-torsional ultrasonic processing is widely used in various types of processing. In the presented work, the basic size of the horn is obtained from the wave equation of the forced vibration, and the modal analysis and amplitude test are carried out to verify the rationality of the LUTG structure. Then, according to the probability density function of cutting thickness and the overlapping effect of adjacent abrasive trajectories, the LUTG surface topography prediction model is established by using the height formula of the surface residual material, and the model reliability is verified by using the orthogonal test. The error between the test results and the prediction model is within 13.2%. Finally, based on the response surface method, the optimal process parameters that can meet the requirements of low roughness (Ra) and high material removal rate (MRR) are screened, and the optimal combination of process parameters is obtained as follows: A = 4.5 μm, n = 6493.3 r/min, ap = 28.4 μm, and vf = 21.1 mm/min.

Collaborative formation pattern of surface topography and residual stress in hard turning of steels

High-performance manufacturing (HPM) is essential for high-quality equipment and parts manufacturing, which requires not only geometric accuracy but also control of surface integrity to satisfy functional performance. Surface topography and residual stress are important elements of surface integrity. However, they are always investigated individually, and their collaborative formation pattern has been ignored for a long time. In this study, surface topography will be measured by a 3D laser scanning microscope and analyzed from the perspective of spectral wavelength (λ) along with its corresponding amplitude. Whereas the residual stress (RS) is going to be analyzed by X-Ray diffraction and finite element (FE) model. Thereafter we introduce the formation pattern of both surface topography and RS. Hereby, simulated points clouds of machined surface topography are generated by superimposing the normally distributed random numbers that take into account the springback of the workpiece material response on tool kinematics and geometry. Furthermore, the RS is divided into mechanical loads induced (RSM) and thermal loads induce (RST) according to the mechanism of formation, which were obtained in cutting speed (Y-direction) and feed direction (Z-direction) by the Mohr circle. Our experimental and numerical results showed that an increase in the feed rate (from 0.05 mm/r to 0.15 mm/r) significantly increases the surface roughness and cutting temperature. The increase in temperature increased the RST by up to 286.1%, resulting in a reduction of compressive RS in Z-direction and an increase of tensile RS in Y-direction. Moreover, the increase in cutting speed (from 40 m/min to 80 m/min) results in a more regular surface and a reduction in surface roughness because of the smaller springback. At the same time, it also leads to a decrease of RSM in Z-direction and an increase of RSM in Y-direction. In addition, the increment in cutting speed leads to a minor increase in temperature and RST (maximum increase of 47.0%). Combining the effects of RSM and RST, RS in both directions increases slightly.

Effect of forging pretreatment on the microstructures and mechanical properties of the Al-Cu-Li alloy

The 2195 Al-Cu-Li alloy is widely utilized in the aerospace industry due to its lightweight nature and high strength. Consequently, gaining a comprehensive understanding of techniques to enhance its microstructural and mechanical properties is crucial for the consistent production of reliable and high-strength aerospace components. In this investigation, a pristine 2195 industrial ingot was subject to three distinct forging pretreatments: PT1, which involved a direct three upsetting and three stretching (3U3S) process; PT2, which combined double stage homogenization (DH) with 3U3S; and PT3, which involved DH along with six upsetting and six stretching (6U6S). Subsequent warm deformation and T8 aging treatment were applied to the pretreated forgings. The microstructure evolution during the processes and the final mechanical properties in three orthogonal dimensions were examined. The findings revealed that the combination of DH and multi-dimensional forging (MDF) facilitated the dissolution of non-equilibrium phases to a greater extent. Consequently, the main strengthening phase transformed from the T1 + δ` phase observed in PT1 to the denser T1 + little θ` phase observed in PT2 and PT3 after T8 aging treatment. Notably, the tensile strength and yield strength of PT2 and PT3 specimens increased by 20–30 MPa in all three directions. Moreover, the MDF process accelerated the recrystallization behavior from PT1 to PT3, resulting in a gradual reduction in the average grain size of the pretreated samples from 356 µm to 186 µm. Following warm forging and T8 aging, the grains exhibited a finer and equiaxed structure. Additionally, the coarse phase was identified as the primary source of transgranular cracking. The coarse phases within the matrix became more homogeneous and finer from PT1 to PT3, with a gradual decrease in their area fraction. On the fracture surfaces, the aggregation of coarse phases diminished. Consequently, the elongation in the z-direction improved, and the elongation anisotropy and standard deviation decreased in all three directions for PT3 specimens. The findings presented in this study provide valuable insights into the high-performance manufacturing of Al-Cu-Li alloys.

Improved Perovskite CH3NH3PbI3 Thin Films by ZIF‐67 Additive Assisted Co Ion Doping toward High‐Performance and Stable Photodetectors

AbstractLead halide perovskites are considered important materials for the fabrication of high‐performance optoelectronic devices. However, the poor quality of thin films with abundant grain boundaries and defect states greatly lower the performance and stability of as‐fabricated devices. In the present work, the growth of improved perovskite CH3NH3PbI3 thin films through Co‐based zeolite imidazole framework (ZIF‐67) additive assisted Co ion doping is reported. Investigation of the morphological, structural, optical, and electrical properties shows that the Co ion doped CH3NH3PbI3 (CH3NH3Pb0.98Co0.02I3) thin films exhibit low grain boundaries, low defect states, and improved structural stabilities. The positive roles of suppression of defect states are further demonstrated by improved performance and stability of photodetectors based on CH3NH3Pb0.98Co0.02I3 thin films. Finally, density functional theory calculations are performed to reveal the mechanisms of passivation of undercoordinate Pb2+ vacancy defect states by Co ion doping. The results provided in this work will pave the way toward the fabrication of high performance and stable perovskite photodetectors in the future.
