Clear effects on root system architecture of winter wheat cultivars (Triticum aestivum L.) from cultivation environment and practices

Roots play a pivotal role in the adaption of a plant to its environment, with different root traits adapting the plant to different stresses. The environment affects the Root System Architecture (RSA), but the genetic factors determine to what extent, and whether stress brought about by extreme environmental conditions is detrimental to a specific crop. This study aimed to identify differences in winter wheat RSA caused by cultivation region and practice, in the form of preceding crop (precrop), and to identify if modern cultivars used in Sweden differ in their reaction to these environments. This was undertaken using high-throughput phenotyping to assess the RSA. Clear differences in the RSA were observed between the Swedish cultivation regions, precrop treatments, and interaction of these conditions with each other and the genetics. Julius showed a large difference between cultivars, with 9.3–17.1% fewer and 12–20% narrower seminal roots. Standardized yield decreased when grown after wheat, 23% less compared to oilseed rape (OSR), and when grown in the Southern region, 14% less than the Central region. Additionally, correlations were shown between the root number, angle, and grain yield, with different root types being correlated depending on the precrop. Cultivars on the Swedish market show differences that can be adapted to the region-precrop combinations. The differences in precrop effect on RSA between regions show global implications and a need for further assessment. Correlations between RSA and yield, based on root-type × precrop, indicate different needs of the RSA depending on the management practices and show the potential for improving crop yield through targeting genotypic and environmental conditions in a holistic manner. Understanding this RSA variance, and the mechanisms of conditional response, will allow targeted cultivar breeding for specific environments, increasing plant health and food security.

Winter mortality of freshwater fish associated with parasitic infection

This study reports an episode of fish mortality occurred in the Garupá and Pindapoy Grande streams, near the confluence with the Paraná River (Garupá, Argentina). Dead and moribund fish of various species were observed floating on the water surface. Environmental parameters measured were temperature 5 °C, water temperature 15.1 (±0.6) °C, dissolved oxygen 8.7 (±1.2) ppm, pH 7.5 (±0.2), electrical conductivity 67.6 (± 8.8) mS cm-1 and mean depth of 1.7 (±1.0) m. Macroscopic examination of moribund fish revealed corneal opacity, whitish tegument, increased gill mucus, and whitish areas on gill filaments. Microscopic analysis of gills revealed severe generalized epithelial hyperplasia, lamellar fusion, congestion, and inflammatory infiltrate, particularly lymphocytes and eosinophilic granular cells. In addition, microscopic examination allowed the identification of the following ectoparasites found in gills and tegument: Chilodonella, Ichthyophthirius, Dactylogyridae and Trichodinidae, representing 98%, 1.2%, 0.6% and 0.2%, respectively. This study constitutes a novel record of wild fish mortality associated with extreme environmental conditions and parasitosis. Furthermore, our findings are significant as there are no prior reports in Argentina of epizootic cases linked to Chilodonella sp. infection in wild or farmed fish populations, being the first report of chilodonelliasis for this region.

Short-term extreme value prediction for the structural responses of the IEA 15 MW offshore wind turbine under extreme environmental conditions

As offshore wind turbines enter deep seas, large-scale models ranging from 15 MW to 20 MW are becoming the mainstream choice for the future market. The dynamic responses of 15 MW wind turbines under extreme environmental conditions should be considered in the design process. With increasing structure sizes, the mooring systems and tower base structures play essential roles in maintaining position and supporting wind turbines under harsh environmental conditions. Accurate estimation of the extreme mooring loads and dynamic responses at the tower base is crucial, particularly for the ultimate limit state (ULS) analysis. The dynamic responses of the offshore wind turbine are calculated by Open Fast and validated with other numerical tools. For the safety of deep-sea structures, it is necessary to consider the extreme environmental conditions with a 100-year return period, which is beyond the current standards. An environmental contour-based approach is proposed to select the short-term extreme conditions, enabling approximate prediction of the extreme values of the dynamic responses during the preliminary design stage. The Gumbel method and the ACER method are used to predict the short-term extreme dynamic responses. Comparative evaluations against the relevant standards for floating wind turbines are conducted to assess structural safety.

Stony Corals and Their Associated Fauna Residing in Marine Lakes under Extreme Environmental Conditions

Tropical marine lakes are small land-locked marine waterbodies occurring in karstic coastal areas. During biodiversity surveys in 12 marine lakes in Raja Ampat, Southwest Papua province, Indonesia, we recorded at least 37 species belonging to 29 genera of hard corals. Their observed associated symbiont fauna consisted of bivalve molluscs and polychaete worms. Marine lake temperature ranged from 30.0 to 32.5 °C, acidity from pH 7.6 to 8.1, and salinity from 26.4 to 33.2 ppt. This study provides the first inventory of the marginal coral communities in the extreme habitat of marine lakes, under chronic extreme environmental conditions of higher temperatures, land-based nutrient loads, and sedimentation.

Freediving, Hypoxia, and Inflammation: Physiological Adaptations and Interactions between HIF and NF-κB

Freediving presents a unique set of physiological challenges and adaptations, making it a subject of interest for researchers studying the effects of extreme environmental conditions on the human body. There is a complex interplay between freediving, hypoxia, immune responses, and inflammation, shedding light on the physiological effects of freediving on the human body. This article describes how HIF and NF-κB interact during hypoxia and inflammation, including their synergistic effects and signaling pathways. The regulatory loop involving these transcription factors is highlighted, providing insight into their linked roles in modulating the cellular response to hypoxia and inflammation.

Deciphering the functional and structural complexity of the Solar Lake flat mat microbial benthic communities.

Fifty-five years ago, the extremophilic "Solar Lake" was discovered on the Red Sea shores, garnering microbiologists' interest worldwide from the 1970s to 1990s. Nevertheless, research on the lake paused at the turn of the millennium. In our study, we revisited the Solar Lake benthic community using a genome-centric approach and described the distinct microbial communities in the exposed versus shallow-water mat unveiling microbial zonation in the benthic communities surrounding the Solar Lake. Our findings highlighted the unique structural and functional adaptations employed by these microbial mat communities. Moreover, we report new methanogens and phototrophs, including an intriguing methanogen from the Archaeoglobales family. We describe how the Solar Lake's flat mat microbial community adapts to stressors like oxygen intrusion and drought due to summer water level changes, which provides insights into the genomic strategies of microbial communities to cope with altered and extreme environmental conditions.

Meta-analysis identifying gut microbial biomarkers of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau populations and the functionality of microbiota-derived butyrate in high-altitude adaptation

ABSTRACT The extreme environmental conditions of a plateau seriously threaten human health. The relationship between gut microbiota and human health at high altitudes has been extensively investigated. However, no universal gut microbiota biomarkers have been identified in the plateau population, limiting research into gut microbiota and high-altitude adaptation. 668 16s rRNA samples were analyzed using meta-analysis to reduce batch effects and uncover microbiota biomarkers in the plateau population. Furthermore, the robustness of these biomarkers was validated. Mendelian randomization (MR) results indicated that Tibetan gut microbiota may mediate a reduced erythropoietic response. Functional analysis and qPCR revealed that butyrate may be a functional metabolite in high-altitude adaptation. A high-altitude rat model showed that butyrate reduced intestinal damage caused by high altitudes. According to cell experiments, butyrate may downregulate hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) expression and blunt cellular responses to hypoxic stress. Our research found universally applicable biomarkers and investigated their potential roles in promoting human health at high altitudes.

Wave Tank Experiments Of A Novel Floating Photovoltaic System

Solar photovoltaic (PV) energy, alongside other renewables, is expected to lead the energy sector. However, large-scale ground-mounted PV generation requires a significant amount of land, prompting conflict with other uses. On these grounds, floating PV (FPV) technology is gaining interest (Rosa-Clot and Tina, 2020). While commercial FPV is already being deployed on freshwater bodies, efforts are being undertaken towards harnessing solar energy on the untapped surface of the ocean (Oliveira-Pinto and Stokkermans, 2020). The main challenge is to develop a cost-effective technology capable of withstanding extreme environmental conditions whilst ensuring platform stability, to minimize misalignment of the solar panels that could result in significant efficiency loss (Claus and López, 2022). Several marine concepts have been proposed, with most of them leaning towards flexible design strategies, similar to those applied in freshwater (Claus and López, 2023). Researchers at the University of Oviedo, Spain, are developing a novel FPV system that is specifically designed for marine conditions, following a rigid design approach (Figure 1). The concept leverages the combination of two distinct elements: a double-axis solar tracker, maximizing solar energy generation, and a tension-leg platform (TLP), ensuring structural performance and stability. This research showcases the wave tank experiments, under regular wave action.

Effects of fasting and environmental factors on appetite regulators in pond loach Misgurnus anguillicaudatus

The pond loach (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus) is an important aquaculture freshwater species, used as an ornamental fish, food source for humans and angling bait. Pond loaches are resistant to fasting and extreme environmental conditions, including temperature and low oxygen levels. Little is known about how these factors affect the feeding physiology and the endocrine regulation of feeding of loaches. In this study, we examined the effects of fasting, as well as increased temperature and decreased oxygen levels on food intake and transcript levels of appetite regulators. Fasted fish had lower blood glucose levels, and lower expression levels of intestine CCK and PYY, and brain CART1, but had higher levels of brain orexin and ghrelin than fed fish. Fish held at 30 °C had higher food intake, glucose levels, and mRNA levels of intestine CCK and PYY, and brain CART2, but lower brain orexin levels than fish at 20 °C. Fish held at low oxygen levels had a lower food intake, higher intestine CCKa and ghrelin, and brain orexin, CART2 and ghrelin mRNA expression levels than fish held at high O2 levels. Our results suggest that fasting and high temperatures increase the expression of orexigenic and anorexigenic factors respectively, whereas the increase in expression of both orexigenic and anorexigenic factors in low O2 environments might not be related to their role in feeding, but possibly to protection from tissue damage. The results of our study might shed new light on how pond loaches are able to cope with extreme environmental conditions such as low food availability, extreme temperatures and hypoxia.

Zwitterionic cellulose nanofibers-based hydrogels with high toughness, ionic conductivity, and healable capability in cryogenic environments

Extreme environmental conditions often lead to irreversible structural failure and functional degradation in hydrogels, limiting their service life and applicability. Achieving high toughness, self-healing, and ionic conductivity in cryogenic environments is vital to broaden their applications. Herein, we present a novel approach to simultaneously enhance the toughness, self-healing, and ionic conductivity of hydrogels, via inducing non-freezable water within the zwitterionic cellulose-based hydrogel skeleton. This approach enables resulting hydrogel to achieve an exceptional toughness of 10.8 MJ m−3, rapid self-healing capability (98.9 % in 30 min), and high ionic conductivity (2.9 S m−1), even when subjected to −40 °C, superior to the state-of-the-art hydrogels. Mechanism analyses reveal that a significant amount of non-freezable water with robust electrostatic interactions is formed within zwitterionic cellulose nanofibers-modified polyurethane molecular networks, imparting superior freezing tolerance and versatility to the hydrogel. Importantly, this strategy harnesses the non-freezable water molecular state of the zwitterionic cellulose nanofibers network, eliminating the need for additional antifreeze and organic solvents. Furthermore, the dynamic Zn coordination within these supramolecular molecule chains enhances interfacial interactions, thereby promoting rapid subzero self-healing and exceptional mechanical strength. Demonstrating its potential, this hydrogel can be used in smart laminated materials, such as aircraft windshields.

Analysis of Trends in the Distance of Wildfires from Built-Up Areas in Spain and California (USA): 2007–2015

Wildfires present a significant risk to societies globally due to population growth, concentrated activities, climate change, and extreme environmental conditions. To establish effective fire suppression and management policies, it is crucial to determine whether the distance between ignition points and urban areas is increasing or decreasing. This study analyzes 101,597 fires in Spain and California between 2007 and 2015, where ignition points and all built-up areas were precisely geolocated in 2014. The study employs the Mann–Kendall test to determine trends and analyze the relative distance of wildfires to human buildings over time. The results indicate that wildfires are becoming statistically significantly closer in several areas. It is also observed that the majority of wildfires are moving away from buildings, although this is not a significant finding. These results suggest the possibility of further research into the reasons behind these observations and possible future developments and their consequences.

Cyanobacterial bloom affects structural and functional succession of microbial communities in urban wetland sediments in the Qinghai Plateau

Abstract Algal blooms significantly affect microbial community in wetland ecosystems. However, little is known about the succession of sediment microbial community during algal blooms. This study aimed to investigate the temporal patterns of sediment bacterial community structure and function succession during algal blooms (March to May, 2022) with high-throughput sequencing technology. To this end, algal blooms were divided into the bloom stage (BS), decomposition stage (DS) and end stage (ES). The results showed that: (1) The algal blooms were dominated by Microcystis species within Cyanobacteria. Both phytoplankton abundance and biomass reached the peak in the BS, with 45.78×105 cells/L and 5.97 mg/L, respectively. (2) The alpha diversity indices of sediment bacterial community showed a monotonically increasing trend, with the lowest value in the BS. Cyanobacterial blooms reduced the relative abundance of Actinobacteria and Chloroflexi, and raised that of Firmicutes, Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes. (3) Cyanobacterial blooms remarkably decreased the complexity of the co-occurrence network of the sediment bacterial community, which resisted extreme environmental conditions in the BS and DS by increasing positive relationships. (4) Mantel test showed that phytoplankton biomass, T, DO, and OC had significant effects on the sediment bacterial community. The results of this study are important for the ecological management of algal blooms through microorganisms.

Triboelectric Basalt Textiles Efficiently Operating within an Ultrawide Temperature Range.

With the continuous upsurge in demand for wearable energy, nanogenerators are increasingly required to operate under extreme environmental conditions. Even though they are at the cutting edge of technology, nanogenerators have difficulty producing high-quality electrical output at very extreme temperatures. Here, a triboelectric basalt textile (TBT) with an ultrawide operational temperature range (from -196 to 520°C) is created employing basalt material as the main body. The output power density of the TBT, in contrast to most conventional nanogenerators, would counterintuitively rise by 2.3 times to 740.6mW m-2 after heating to 100°C because the high temperature will enhance the material's interface polarization and electronic kinetic energy. The TBT retains ≈55% of its initial electrical output even after heating in the flame of an alcohol lamp (520°C). Surprisingly, the TBTs output voltage may retain over 85% of its initial value even after submerging in liquid nitrogen. The TBTs exceptional resistance to heat and cold indicates its possible use in high and low latitudes, high altitudes, deserts, and even space settings.

Lifestyle Model in Regions with Extreme Environmental and Climate Conditions

The article introduces an analysis of human psychology in extreme conditions. On the one hand, scientific interest to extremology, i.e., the effect of extreme factors on people, is growing. On the other side, this analysis revealed a lack of empirical data on cognitive dynamics before, during, and after an extreme situation, as well as after spending a long time in extreme environmental and climate conditions. The research objective was to study the lifestyle of people (n = 66) who live in regions with extreme environmental and climate conditions. The theoretical analysis and the empirical data made it possible to construct a lifestyle model. Its structure consisted of core, peripheral, and background semantic layers. The core structure included balanced temporal continuum, practical activity, personal activity, and basic lifestyle. The temporal locus became disrupted if the core lifestyle structures were out of balance. Fatalism and fixation on the past led to negative reassessment of one’s life, which could be compensated by activating one’s inner resources and endowing semantic layers with a positive context.

Arctic cyanobacterial mat community diversity decreases with latitude across the Canadian Arctic.

Cyanobacterial mats are commonly reported as hotspots of microbial diversity across polar environments. These thick, multilayered microbial communities provide a refuge from extreme environmental conditions, with many species able to grow and coexist despite the low allochthonous nutrient inputs. The visibly dominant phototrophic biomass is dependent on internal nutrient recycling by heterotrophic organisms within the mats; however, the specific contribution of heterotrophic protists remains little explored. In this study, mat community diversity was examined along a latitudinal gradient (55-83°N), spanning subarctic taiga, tundra, polar desert, and the High Arctic ice shelves. The prokaryotic and eukaryotic communities were targeted, respectively, by V4 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) and V9 18S rRNA gene amplicon high-throughput sequencing. Prokaryotic and eukaryotic richness decreased, in tandem with decreasing temperatures and shorter seasons of light availability, from the subarctic to the High Arctic. Taxonomy-based annotation of the protist community revealed diverse phototrophic, mixotrophic, and heterotrophic genera in all mat communities, with fewer parasitic taxa in High Arctic communities. Co-occurrence network analysis identified greater heterogeneity in eukaryotic than prokaryotic community structure among cyanobacterial mats across the Canadian Arctic. Our findings highlight the sensitivity of microbial eukaryotes to environmental gradients across northern high latitudes.

Wide Temperature Electrolytes for Lithium Batteries: Solvation Chemistry and Interfacial Reactions.

Improving the wide-temperature operation of rechargeable batteries is crucial for boosting the adoption of electric vehicles and further advancing their application scope in harsh environments like deep ocean and space probes. Herein, recent advances in electrolyte solvation chemistry are critically summarized, aiming to address the long-standing challenge of notable energy diminution at sub-zero temperatures and rapid capacity degradation at elevated temperatures (>45°C). This review provides an in-depth analysis of the fundamental mechanisms governing the Li-ion transport process, illustrating how these insights have been effectively harnessed to synergize with high-capacity, high-rate electrodes. Another critical part highlights the interplay between solvation chemistry and interfacial reactions, as well as the stability of the resultant interphases, particularly in batteries employing ultrahigh-nickel layered oxides as cathodes and high-capacity Li/Si materials as anodes. The detailed examination reveals how these factors are pivotal in mitigating the rapid capacity fade, thereby ensuring a long cycle life, superior rate capability, and consistent high-/low-temperature performance. In the latter part, a comprehensive summary of insitu/operational analysis is presented. This holistic approach, encompassing innovative electrolyte design, interphase regulation, and advanced characterization, offers a comprehensive roadmap for advancing battery technology in extreme environmental conditions.

Dynamic response analysis of a semisubmersible floating offshore wind turbine subjected to mooring line failure under normal and extreme environmental conditions

Floating offshore wind turbines (FOWTs) offer a significant opportunity for harnessing wind energy and achieving clean energy goals. This paper investigates the effects of mooring line failure in semisubmersible FOWTs under normal and extreme environmental conditions. The OC4 DeepCwind type semisubmersible with an NREL 5 MW wind turbine is considered for investigating the behavior of FOWT under intact and failed mooring lines. This study covers a wide range of environmental conditions, operational conditions of wind turbines, and mooring line failure scenarios. This paper investigates the mooring line failure effects on platform responses, mooring line fairlead tensions, and tower responses. The results show that the platform surge, heave, pitch responses, tower fore-aft displacement, base shear force in X-direction, and base moment in Y-direction are increased for upwind side mooring line failure during the operational condition of FOWT. Subsequently, the platform sway, roll, yaw responses, tower side-to-side displacement, base shear force in Y-direction, and base moment in X-direction are more during downwind side mooring line failure in the same environment. On the other hand, the impact of upwind side mooring line failure affects all 6 Degrees of Freedom (DOF) platform responses significantly during the parked state of FOWT. The maximum fairlead tensions observed in the remaining mooring lines remain below the mooring line breaking strength even after a mooring line failure during both operational and parked states of FOWT. It is also observed that the platform responses (excluding heave), tower responses, and fairlead tensions exhibit greater values when an extreme turbulence wind model is employed. The platform surge, heave, pitch responses, maximum fairlead tension, tower fore-aft displacement, and tower base moment in Y-direction show higher values under severe sea state condition.

Response of phytoplankton composition to environmental stressors under humidification in three alpine lakes on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, China.

Owning to their extreme environmental conditions, lakes on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau have typically displayed a simplistic food web structure, rendering them more vulnerable to climate change compared to lakes in plains. Phytoplankton, undergoing a changing aquatic environment, play a crucial role in the material cycle and energy flow of the food chain, particularly important for the unique fish species of the Tibetan Plateau. To identify the changing environment indexes and determine the response of phytoplankton composition to the environment change in alpine lakes, three lakes-Lake Qinghai, Lake Keluke and Lake Tuosu-were selected as study areas. Seasonal sampling surveys were conducted in spring and summer annually from 2018 to 2020. Our findings revealed there were significant changes in physicochemical parameters and phytoplankton in the three lakes. Bacillariophyta was the predominant phytoplankton in Lake Qinghai from 2018 to 2020, with the genera Synedra sp., Navicula sp., Cymbella sp. and Achnanthidium sp. predominated alternately. Lake Keluke alternated between being dominated by Bacillariophyta and cyanobacteria during the same period. Dolichospermum sp., a cyanobacteria, was prevalent in the summer of 2018 and 2019 and in the spring of 2020. In Lake Tuosu, Bacillariophyta was the predominant phytoplankton from 2018 to 2020, except in the summer of 2019, which was dominated by cyanobacteria. Synedra sp., Oscillatoria sp., Pseudoanabaena sp., Chromulina sp. and Achnanthidium sp. appeared successively as the dominant genera. Analysis revealed that all three lakes exhibited higher phytoplankton abundance in 2018 that in 2019 and 2020. Concurrently, they experienced higher average temperatures in 2018 than in the subsequent years. The cyanobacteria, Bacillariophyta, Chlorophyta and overall phytoplankton increased with temperature and decreased with salinity and NH4-N. Besides, the ratios of cyanobacteria, and the ratios of Bacillariophyta accounted in total phytoplankton increased with temperature. These findings suggest that cyanobacteria and phytoplankton abundance, especially Bacillariophyta, may have an increase tendency in the three alpine lakes under warm and wet climate.

The alphabet of sea fennel: Comprehensive phytochemical characterisation of Croatian populations of Crithmum maritimum L.

Extreme environmental conditions affect the synthesis and accumulation of bioactive metabolites in halophytic plants. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence and quantity of key health-promoting phytochemicals in Croatian sea fennel, one of the most popular Mediterranean halophytes with a wide range of uses. The EOs were characterised by a high content of limonene (up to 93%), while the fatty acid profile shows a low content of oleic acid and the presence of valuable linoleic acid (ω-6) and linolenic acid (ω-3) in high percentages. The dominances of lutein and α-tocopherol were also confirmed in all samples. The results confirm the great variability in the chemistry of sea fennel populations in the Mediterranean region, with significant differences in the composition of the Croatian samples compared to the others, as well as the presence and high concentrations of the analysed bioactive compounds that contribute to the plant's health-promoting attributes.

Developmental Dynamics of the Gut Virome in Tibetan Pigs at High Altitude: A Metagenomic Perspective across Age Groups.

Tibetan pig is a geographically isolated pig breed that inhabits high-altitude areas of the Qinghai-Tibetan plateau. At present, there is limited research on viral diseases in Tibetan pigs. This study provides a novel metagenomic exploration of the gut virome in Tibetan pigs (altitude ≈ 3000 m) across three critical developmental stages, including lactation, nursery, and fattening. The composition of viral communities in the Tibetan pig intestine, with a dominant presence of Microviridae phages observed across all stages of development, in combination with the previous literature, suggest that it may be associated with geographical locations with high altitude. Functional annotation of viral operational taxonomic units (vOTUs) highlights that, among the constantly increasing vOTUs groups, the adaptability of viruses to environmental stressors such as salt and heat indicates an evolutionary response to high-altitude conditions. It shows that the lactation group has more abundant viral auxiliary metabolic genes (vAMGs) than the nursery and fattening groups. During the nursery and fattening stages, this leaves only DNMT1 at a high level. which may be a contributing factor in promoting gut health. The study found that viruses preferentially adopt lytic lifestyles at all three developmental stages. These findings not only elucidate the dynamic interplay between the gut virome and host development, offering novel insights into the virome ecology of Tibetan pigs and their adaptation to high-altitude environments, but also provide a theoretical basis for further studies on pig production and epidemic prevention under extreme environmental conditions.
