Assessing the Impact of Climate Changes, Building Characteristics, and HVAC Control on Energy Requirements under a Mediterranean Climate

Despite efforts to mitigate climate change, annual greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise, which may lead to the global warming of our planet. Buildings’ thermal energy needs are inherently linked to climate conditions. Consequently, it is crucial to evaluate how climate change affects these energy demands. Despite extensive analysis, a comprehensive assessment involving a diverse range of building types has not been consistently conducted. The primary objective of this research is to perform a coherent evaluation of the influence of climate changes, construction element properties, and the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system type of control on the energy requirements of six buildings (residential, services, and commercial). The buildings are considered to be located in a temperate Mediterranean climate. Our focus is on the year 2070, considering three distinct climatic scenarios: (i) maintaining the current climate without further changes, (ii) moderate climate changes, and (iii) extreme climate changes. The buildings are distributed across three different locations, each characterized by unique climatic conditions. Buildings’ envelope features a traditional External Thermal Insulation Composite System (ETICS) and expanded polystyrene (EPS) serves as thermal insulation material. Two critical design factors are explored: EPS thickness ranging from 0 (no insulation) to 12 cm; and horizontal external fixed shading elements varying lengths from 0 (absence) to 150 cm. Six alternative setpoint ranges are assessed for the HVAC system control: three based on the Predicted Mean Vote (PMV) and three based on indoor air temperature (Tair). Results were obtained with a validated in-home software tool. They show that, even under extreme climate conditions, the application of thermal insulation remains energetically favorable; however, its relative importance diminishes as climate severity increases. Then, proper insulation design remains important for energy efficiency. The use of external shading elements for glazing (e.g., overhangs, louvers) proves beneficial in specific cases. As climate changes intensify, the significance of shading elements grows. Thus, strategic placement and design are necessary for good results. The HVAC system’s energy consumption depends on the level of thermal comfort requirements, on the climate characteristics, and on the building’s type of use. As climate change severity intensifies, energy demands for cooling increase, whereas energy needs for heating decrease. However, it is essential to recognize that the impact of climate changes on HVAC system energy consumption significantly depends on the type of building.

Measurement analysis of large-area elements of External Thermal Insulation Composite Systems using 3D scanning techniques

Measuring the deformation of large-area objects with non-uniform rough textures using traditional techniques is technically challenging and time-consuming. This article presents a comprehensive solution that enables the precise measurement of the deformation of large-area elements of external thermal insulation composite systems (ETICS). The laboratory tests for environmental resistance were conducted in a climatic chamber. The surface of the wall underwent irregular deformation owing to thermal and humidity cycles. The deformation state at different stages of exposure was recorded using 3D scanning techniques. Scanning results were paired using a simplified cause-effect graph, and the deformation was measured by engineering inspection. Evaluation criteria were developed using measurement uncertainty and a straightforward binary acceptance principle. Finally, compliance tests were performed to confirm the reproducibility and repeatability of the method.

Energy Efficiency versus Heritage—Proposal for a Replicable Prototype to Maintain the Architectural Values of Buildings in Energy Improvement Interventions on Facades: The Case of the Expansion of San Sebastián

The implementation of energy efficiency improvements in facades, such as ventilated facades or External Thermal Insulation Composite Systems (ETICS), is leading to a widespread modification of these structures. The lack of appropriate regulations to curb the destruction of the built heritage, particularly in historical centers, has been identified. In response to this issue, a project has been developed to create a prototype for determining regulations for facade interventions. The Design Science Research Methodology (DSRM) has been employed in the development of the prototype, which has been tested in a case study of the ensemble formed by the Cortázar and Oriental expansion areas in San Sebastián. The initial prototype has been outlined, corrected, and improved in an iterative process, resulting in a final prototype that enables a faster, more rigorous, and efficient understanding, characterization, classification, study, and definition of intervention criteria, measuring the vulnerability of buildings to these interventions quantitatively. In this study, the vulnerability is defined as the risk that a facade will alter the characteristics of its architectural style and distort the reading of streetscapes that belong to a period with a clearly defined character. The case study results have been compiled into intervention criteria sheets for each of the studied buildings. This material has been presented to the relevant public authorities, with the hope that it may lead to a modification of current legislation, thereby helping to curb the loss of architectural heritage identity.

Quantification of the Improvement in Sustainability after a Comparative Experimental Study of Single-Family Homes with Façade Rehabilitation Using the External Thermal Insulation Composite System

This study emerged from the necessity to analyze the most effective energy-saving strategies within the current real estate market and substantiate their application with empirical data. Undoubtedly, the adoption of External Thermal Insulation Composite Systems (ETICSs) stands out as one of the prevalent approaches. This article presents temperature-monitoring data collected on-site from the facades of two single-family homes initially constructed with identical compositions, materials, construction dates, locations, and orientations. The thermal envelope of one home underwent rehabilitation using the ETICS, while the other remained in its original state. Continuous temperature recordings on the southern and northwestern facades of both homes were conducted using thermocouples over a 15-day period. The data analysis yielded insights into facade performance before and after this rehabilitation approach. The findings suggest that the implementation of ETICS results in more stable interior temperatures, significantly reducing indoor temperatures in comparison to outdoor conditions, leading to a notable decrease in heat energy loss. Consequently, this research underscores the tangible benefits of employing ETICS in building rehabilitation, emphasizing its role as a passive energy-saving strategy. By demonstrating the positive impact on thermal performance and energy efficiency, this study reinforces the vital connection between research endeavors and sustainability objectives.

Circular Renovation of an Apartment Building with Prefabricated Additional Insulation Elements to Nearly Zero Energy Building

Construction and demolition waste constitute more than one-third of the total waste generated in the European Union. The pursuit of sustainable renovation must progress further to encompass elements that ensure reuse or recyclability. A fundamental transformation, involving extensive renovation and a transition to circular renovation practices, is indispensable in effectively addressing the pressing challenge of decarbonization for the entire building stock in Europe. In this study, we have developed a circular deep renovation solution using prefabricated modular external additional insulation elements to achieve a nearly Zero Energy Building (nZEB). Circular prefabricated modular external additional insulation elements were formulated, manufactured, and installed. The potential for disassembly and reutilization of materials was developed and demonstrated for both a prototype and the complete deep renovation. The analysed prefabricated modular solutions exhibited greater potential for circularity compared to the traditional External Thermal Insulation Composite System (ETICS) due to their superior demountability and reusability characteristics. The overall cost of the renovation, which included the installation of a new heating system, replacement of water and sewer pipes, addition of 50 kW photovoltaic (PV) panels on the roof, installation of new balconies, addition of a balanced ventilation system with heat recovery, and replacement of the electricity system in common areas, amounted to 505 €/m². Following the deep renovation, the Energy Performance Value was measured to be 92 kWh/(m²·a), resulting in an EPC class of A. This implies that the building now meets the requirements for nZEB in accordance with Estonian legislation, with no performance gap.

Experimental and Numerical Assessment of the Thermal Bridging Effect in a Reinforced Concrete Corner Pillar

This paper discusses experimental and simulated data regarding the thermal bridging effect in a reinforced concrete corner pillar, which belongs to a building dating back to the 1980s and located in Southern Italy. The thermal field determined by the concrete pillar corner has been evaluated, introducing an experimental procedure based on both direct measurements and indirect observations of the inner superficial temperature by means of thermal imaging techniques and surface temperature probes. Moreover, indoor and outdoor air temperature and relative humidity were measured to provide suitable boundary conditions in the numerical simulations, performed with a commercial software tool widely used in Italy based on 2D finite element techniques. The experimental measurements show that, at more than 50 cm from the corner, the surface temperatures become almost constant, meaning that the thermal bridging effect becomes less evident. However, the surface temperature in the corner is around 1.5 °C lower than in the undisturbed flanking walls. In terms of local heat flux, the discrepancy between simulations and measurements is below 3%. Finally, this paper verifies the effectiveness of External Thermal Insulation Composite System (ETICS) renovation in reducing the thermal bridging effect of the corner pillar. The results also include the calculation of the linear thermal transmittance with a series of relations available in well-known atlases for thermal bridges and show that these relations are more reliable in the case of uninsulated pillar than for the insulated one.

Green Innovation for Carbon Footprint Reduction in Construction Industry

The cement-based mixture market or dry mix for the ETICS (External Thermal Insulation Composite System) is a highly competitive market and it is becoming increasingly difficult to comply with European sustainability specifications such as the development of products with a lower carbon footprint, lighter and less energy-intensive materials, lower environmental impacts, the option of recycling, etc. This market plays a highly important role in the construction sector, not only for the technical solutions and green innovation it offers but also for the aesthetic aspects. Since 2005, this market has been growing by more than 20% per year, which makes it increasingly attractive with better opportunities. However, this increase has been reduced not only by the crisis of 2007–2008 but also by the pandemic of recent years. The use of cement type CEM II, 42.5R, B-LL, together with a modified RDP ratio, has visibly improved the properties of the thermal insulation system through the adhesion of the EPS boards, the modulus of elasticity, wear resistance, flexibility, and impact resistance. Our research results as green innovation products are above the minimum values agreed by the ETICS standards; in addition, this product has in its formulation a 30% lower carbon footprint compared to any other adhesive in the construction market applied for ETICS systems; therefore, we are talking about a sustainable and clean product, suitable for rehabilitations and ecological constructions adjusted to the European policies of carbon footprint reduction.

A comparative life cycle assessment of ETICS and ventilated façade systems with timber cladding

The aim of this work is to evaluate the environmental impact of different solutions for building facade retrofitting. Based on Sustainable Construction, this study is carried out by applying the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology based on ISO 14044:2006 standard requirements. A “cradle-to-grave” life cycle analysis is developed for each solution, comprising the extraction of raw materials to the disposal phase, and then a comparative analysis was performed by considering the same functional unit: 1 m2 of building facade for a 40-year time horizon. Four retrofit solutions are assessed: two External Thermal Insulation Composite Systems (ETICS), differing only in the insulation material, expanded polystyrene (EPS), and insulation corkboard (ICB); and two ventilated facade systems with different types of timber cladding, thermally modified timber, and painted timber. The data included in the inventory phase is mostly taken from technical documentation and from the Ecoinvent database, complemented with scientific literature and estimations when necessary. The LCA was performed using the SimaPro software applying both EPD (2018) and ReCiPe 2016 Endpoint (H) methods. Results of this study show that, phase-wise, the production and maintenance of the components materials have higher contribution in terms of environmental impact. On the other hand, by comparing the various solutions, the ventilated facade retrofit solution with heat treated timber cladding is the one that shows the highest environmental impact in almost every single category, whereas the cladding solution with painted timber finish is the one that shows the best environmental performance.

NIR reflective Paints as an Alternative for Sustainable Façade Renovation

Several studies of infrared reflective materials used on opaque envelopes have shown that their application can reduce the surface temperature and the cooling energy needs of buildings and help mitigate the urban heat island effect. Some of these studies were carried out by incorporating near-infrared (NIR) reflective materials on new buildings or as part of new construction systems, considering that one of the simpler and most used façade renovation methods is repainting. In a repainting process, the reflectance could change since the reflectance depends on the interaction between the reflective layer and the substrate. A study was carried out on the reflectance of paints with NIR reflective properties applied on the finishing coat of external thermal insulation composite systems (ETICS), simulating a façade renovation. A black NIR reflective paint was applied in one layer over the existing finishing coat of two ETICS samples: one with a grey mortar colour and another with a conventional black colour. A second configuration was considered by adding an intermediate layer of regularisation with white colour. Traditional black colour and the mortars were applied on a transparent acrylic base as a reference. The samples were assessed with a modular spectrophotometer to assess the total and NIR reflectance and the colour coordinates on the CIELab space. The results showed that the reflectance and colour of the new layer are independent of the colour or type of the first layer in the case of conventional paint. Conversely, the substrate affects the NIR paint performance, where a lighter substrate can help improve the reflectance but can also lead to a more significant colour change. Likewise, the results of the paint over a new white layer resulted in a lower reflectance compared to the reflectance of a single paint layer.

Thermal performance of two different PV-ETICS integration solutions in a real environment

The main aim of the paper was to experimentally investigate the thermal performance of the newly developed concept of building integrated photovoltaics. The first experimental results were obtained for the two proposed techniques of direct integration of photovoltaic panels (PV) with an external thermal insulation composite system (ETICS). Both systems were developed, described in detail, and constructed on a south-oriented building wall, and the main novelty was the introduction of an additional layer with increased heat capacity in one of the variants. Components were equipped with temperature and heat flux sensors connected to the datalogger system. The measurement period was from July to December, while the temperature of the PV panels was measured and analysed. The results were statistically analysed, and the main differences were emphasized. Moreover, the advantages of the case with a higher mass were listed and recommendations were formulated. The obtained results of the possible temperature of exploitation allow one to determine the risk of damage or loss of performance.

On site measurement and hygrothermal modelling of degraded ETICS facade with EPS and mineral wool fire breaks

External Thermal Insulation Composite System (ETICS) facades are widespread and cost-effective building solutions in many climates. However, they are frequently found to deteriorate prematurely. In addition to other possible defects, several buildings were found with horizontal cracks on the facade between every floor level. Because of the fire safety requirements of multi-storey buildings, EPS insulation has been divided by mineral wool fire breaks at each floor level. The service life of the system usually ends up with horizontal cracks appearing at the lower level of the wool belt. This study aimed to determine the damage mechanism. One deteriorated facade was opened to explore possible construction technology errors and specimen were analysed in the laboratory. Temperature and RH were measured in situ inside the walls at different positions. It turned out that built in moisture of concrete was still drying out after three and a half years. Moisture content of concrete was found to be between 0.046 to 0.063 m3/m3 behind EPS insulation and 0.047 to 0.074 m3/m3 behind MW insulation - slightly higher than hygrothemal model was predicting. A possible solution was proposed to alleviate the similar problem in the future with application of waterproofing membrane behind mineral wool.

Strategies to enhance the resistance of ETICS finishing coats to microbiological growth: A systematic study based on small- and large-scale laboratory tests

External thermal insulation composite systems (ETICS) are, in general, more likely to suffer from colonisation by fungi and algae than conventional walls, regardless of the nature of the biocide technology used. This results from the greater propensity of finishing coats applied on ETICS to develop surface condensation and, consequently, favourable conditions for microbiological growth. Most commonly, aesthetic degradation is the only implication. However, some severe cases can cause coating deterioration and loss of adhesion.In this work aiming to study resistance of ETICS finishing coats to fungi and algae growth, different improvement strategies based on thermal, hydrophobic, and hydrophilic approaches were exploited. In total, five different acrylic- and silicate-based formulations (without biocide) were prepared to screen the risk of condensation and biological resistance in separate small-scale laboratory tests. Based on the results obtained, selected finishing coats were applied on a large-scale ETICS wall and tested in a bioclimatic chamber capable of simulating conditions conducive to the early development of biological colonisation. The concomitant influence of biocides was also addressed at this stage.The results showed that a simple silicate-based formulation performs better than other tentative formulations tested, exhibiting a higher resistance to fungi and algae. They also suggested that incorporating glass microspheres or adding an external siloxane layer is not on its own effective in enhancing the resistance to the biological growth of acrylic- and silicate-based formulations.

Resilience of biocide-free ETICS to microbiological growth in an accelerated weathering test

Biocide-free renders and coatings for external thermal insulation composite systems (ETICS) are now long-established on the market and contribute notably to the improvement of ETICS’ environmental properties. A low likelihood of microbiological growth is a relevant criterion when choosing ETICS. We examined whether a previously developed accelerated weathering test would be able to determine the ETICS’ resilience to microorganisms and be suitable as a standard instrument to check the fitness for use of biocide-free ETICS renders and coatings. 15 different combinations of renders and façade coatings, including both new and established products, were tested for 15 weeks under accelerated weathering. The used lifelike weather conditions derived from climate data on an average autumn day in Holzkirchen, Bavaria are favourable for microbiological growth. Specimens were inoculated with a spore suspension containing fungi and algae typical for buildings derived from the institutes' own collection of building-relevant organisms. The results clearly show that biocide-free ETICS’ coatings can be highly resistant to microbiological growth. Of the tested product variants, only two showed low or medium resilience. Additionally, we measured the formation of surface water condensation. Knowledge of the amount of condensation water accumulated during dew point shortfall usually confirms the results of the accelerated weathering test. However, contradictory results also exist. This can be explained by different evaporation times of condensation water on the surface of renders. The evaporation times depend on the render's inherent properties. Our results confirm that the used accelerated weathering setup is a suitable standard instrument to assess and compare the resilience of biocide free ETICS to microbial infestation.

Diversity and distribution of microbial communities on the surface of External Thermal Insulation Composite Systems (ETICS) facades in residential buildings

External Thermal Insulation Composite Systems (ETICS) are frequently used to enhance the energy efficiency of the built environment. However, stains of presumable biological nature are often detected shortly after application, causing cladding defacement and altering the building aesthetics. To address which microbiota could contribute to these biodeterioration related color/aesthetic anomalies, samples collected from stains detected on the surface of building facades with ETICS in three residential sites in Lisbon, Portugal, were analyzed through microbiological culture-dependent technique and culture-independent amplicon DNA high throughput sequencing taxonomic profiling. The obtained data provided a comprehensive description of microbial communities assigned to diverse taxa of the major microbial groups of heterotrophic bacteria, fungi, cyanobacteria, and microalgae (through DNA plastid detection) in the sampled stains. Based on that, we propose that new microorganisms could be added to the list of bio-susceptibility testing organisms in ETICS. Furthermore, microbiota diversity depended more on facade location and cardinal orientation than on ETICS material composition. Overall, this study reveals the unique microbial communities of color/aesthetic biodeterioration stains in ETICS facades, unlike those of other surfaces, and the associated environmental dynamics.

Toward the Sustainable and Efficient Use of External Thermal Insulation Composite Systems (ETICS): A Comprehensive Review of Anomalies, Performance Parameters, Requirements and Durability

The identification of the main degradation agents and knowledge of the degradation mechanisms and long-term performance of ETICSs are of fundamental importance for the sustainable and efficient use of these systems. This review article presents the state of the art related to the durability of ETICSs, defining the required bases for their sustainable and efficient use. The aim is to identify the most common anomalies detected on ETICS façades and their causes, to overview the performance of ETICS, their performance parameters and requirements and to identify the most significant degradation mechanisms and the related failure modes. The results show that ETICS application is a key aspect in the performance and durability of the system, since most of the anomalies can be prevented with proper design, execution and appropriate assembly of the system components. The greatest drawbacks lie in dealing with enhancing the water resistance over time, which leads to extensive cases of anomalies, and improving the mechanical and thermal performance during the life cycle. Further research is needed to evaluate the synergistic effect of several degradation agents and mechanisms toward a development in optimized durability assessment methodologies for ETICSs.

Novel High-Performance ETICS Coatings with Cool Pigments Incorporation

External Thermal Insulation Composite Systems (ETICS) enhance building aesthetics and optimize thermal performance while offering protection against weather, fire, and harmful agents. Key to these capabilities are properties of ETICS rendering. We have applied specialized organic renderings, including modified acrylic resins, additives, and reflective pigments, to mitigate color bleaching and stress cracking induced by high surface temperatures, resulting in improved color stability and water protection. In a practical application at a shopping center in Portugal, we observed reduced coating layer failures, better thermal resistance, and lower maintenance costs over one year. Subsequent research reveals the benefits of Near Infrared Reflective (NIR) pigments and nanocomposites such as titanium dioxide, which increase solar reflectance, enhance resistance to dirt, and promote self-cleaning. Synthetic colored inorganic pigments improve heat stability, thermal inertia, and mechanical resistance. The application of cool pigments also reduces surface temperature by up to 10 °C. These advancements in ETICS technology mark a significant step towards sustainable building practices.

European roadmap for the En-ActivETICS advancement and potential of the PV/PCM unventilated wall system application

The main goal of the European building market transformation regards the reduction of CO2 emissions and energy demand in the built environment towards net zero carbon buildings. This drives research and building practice to search for economically justified solutions that contribute to achieving these objectives. The work presented in this paper is concerned with the technological and economic context. The original solution of photovoltaic integration with the external thermal insulation composite system named the En-ActivETICS was developed, tested and analysed. The energy potential of the En-ActivETICS across Europe, considering south oriented façade is from 88.3 to 195.8 kWh/(m2⋅a), with the efficiency of solar energy conversion of around 13–14%. The problem of system overheating was solved by applying PCM mortar beside the PV panel, which allowed to keep the PV temperature below 70 °C. The risk of moisture load (from driven rain or water vapour condensation) was avoided by diffusion channels pressed in the mortar. Furthermore, the economic analysis of system implementation in Europe is also promising. Considering the availability of solar energy and electricity prices around Europe the payback time of the En-ActivETICS varies between 12 and 44 years for analysed countries. According to the presented roadmap for the En-ActivETICS advancement a payback period of <10 years is possible with a maximum cost of the system <275 EUR/m2 and electricity price >0.25 EUR/kWh.

Regeneration of Panel Housing Estates from the Perspective of Thermal Technology, Sustainability and Environmental Context (Case Study of the City of Ostrava, Czech Republic)

The future of panel housing estates is influenced by a number of factors. Although panel housing estates have seen their share of commentary and analysis from both supporters and de-tractors, there has been no comprehensive effort to explore the field of panel housing estates in terms of building thermal regeneration measures. This article focuses on the links between thermo-technical regeneration measures in panel housing estates, and the application of External Thermal Insulation Composite Systems (ETICS) and their impact on the urban environment of panel housing estates. The paper contains three main sections in which we (1) synthesize the literature, sources, building physics context, and assumptions for the occurrence of biodeterization in the facades of prefab residential housing located in housing estates; (2) compare the case studies and their results from the 2010–2021 field reconnaissance, in situ diagnostics, and laboratory analyses; and (3) identify/illustrate common features, the extent to which the quality of prefab residential housing located in housing estates with ETICS exterior surfaces is influenced by the environmental context, whereby we understand the whole process of the environmental assessment framework as an interrelated complexity of the interacting links between the environment, urban planning, architecture and construction sectors, supporting a holistic approach to the issue at hand. The results show that regeneration work, on the one hand, improves the urbanized environment and the energy potential of a housing estate; on the other hand, we encounter new manifestations of defects and disorders in the form of biodegradation of facades that we did not expect.

Upward Fire Spread Hazard of Vertical Greenery Systems: A Comparative Study with External Thermal Insulation Composite System and Double-Skin Façade

Recent studies have shown that vertical greenery systems (VGS) carry a significant fire threat when not properly looked after. Building on this, the fire hazard of VGS was compared to two other thermally efficient building façade systems (TEBFS), namely external thermal insulation composite systems (ETICS) and double-skin façade (DSF). Numerical simulations were conducted in the fire dynamic simulator (FDS). A fire initiated as a room fire of 1 MW followed by a window-ejected flame on a 12 m tall and 9 m wide front façade with a TEBFS. Three scenarios for each TEBFS were simulated for better comparison. Rapid upward fire spread (UFS) was observed in the VGS scenarios, recording average UFS rates of 8.97, 5.51 and 2.86 cms−1 compared to the scenarios of the other 2 TEBFS where the flame failed to reach the top of the façade within the stipulated simulation time of 300 s. The maximum temperatures reached along the façade in VGS scenarios were much higher than those in the other two TEBFS. In conclusion, the fire hazard of VGS in certain conditions is much higher compared to the fire scenarios of ETICS and DSF that are scrutinised by building codes in many countries for fire safety.

Effectiveness and durability of anti-graffiti products applied on ETICS: towards a compatible and sustainable graffiti removal protocol

External Thermal Insulation Composite Systems (ETICS) are widely used constructive solutions which aim at enhancing the building thermal performance. Nevertheless, ETICS can often present anomalies (e.g., stains and microcracks) throughout their service life, and vandalism actions, as in the case of graffiti, are rather common in urban areas. The removal of undesired graffiti is generally carried out through invasive chemical-mechanical methods, which may affect the durability of the ETICS. The adoption of anti-graffiti products can be a feasible protection method; however, no comprehensive studies were already addressed on these substrates. This study aims at evaluating the effectiveness, compatibility, and durability of three anti-graffiti products (with permanent, semi-permanent, and sacrificial properties) when applied on different ETICS. The removal of aerosol graffiti paints was carried out with a low-invasive and eco-friendly removal method (i.e., low-pressure steam jet). The water transport properties, as well as color, gloss, and roughness, were evaluated before and after graffiti removal. The durability of the anti-graffiti was also assessed by artificial aging cycles. Results showed that graffiti removal was rather efficient on ETICS with acrylic-based finishing coats and when using (semi) permanent anti-graffiti products (with ΔE*ab < 5, i.e., not macroscopically visible, when comparing cleaned and reference surfaces), although these products can reduce their effectiveness after aging. Conversely, unsatisfactory graffiti cleaning was observed on ETICS with lime-based or silicate-based finishing coats (with ΔE*ab > 5), with considerable alteration also of the water transport properties (reducing water absorption and slowing down the drying kinetic).
