Assessing the Value of Information Technology for the Decarbonization of Freight Transport

In its first part, the paper gives a summary of the levels of emissions resulting from each mode of transport by use of statistics at the European and global levels. It also summarizes the main measures and policies that have been put forward for the reduction of freight transport greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. To facilitate the subsequent analyses, these measures and policies are classified into four categories, i.e., affecting the “demand” for freight transport services, shifting freight to less or no carbon-intensive modes, improving the energy efficiency of existing freight vehicles, and transitioning to “clean” fuels including electricity and hydrogen. For each of these categories, their current or potential use of information technology (IT) applications is presented, and key examples of such applications are mentioned. In the final part, a multicriteria analysis is performed with the help of two expert panels which are asked to assess, on a 5-level Likert-type scale, the extent of IT use in each of the four categories. The results show an important or very important contribution of IT in all categories except “improving the energy efficiency of current vehicles”. The highest contribution (with scores higher than 4) appears to be in the category “shifting freight to less carbon-intensive modes”.

Supply chain planning and innovation performance: the moderated mediation effect of IT usage

PurposeThe study aims to figure out the impact of supply chain planning (SCP) on innovation performance (IP), the mediating role of agreement on supply chain vision and goals (ASCVG), and the moderated effect of information technology (IT) use with buyers and suppliers.Design/methodology/approachBased on 265 pieces of data collected from global manufacturing companies, the authors tested the proposed hypothesis through regression analyses. Meanwhile, the plug-in of statistical software SPSS, PROCESS (Model 4 and 14) was used to examine the mediation and moderated mediation models.FindingsThe results reveal that ASCVG partially mediates the effect of SCP on IP. Furthermore, the indirect influence of SCP on IP is stronger when the extent of IT use with buyers is higher, while this indirect effect is not moderated by IT use with suppliers.Originality/valueIn this study, the authors investigated the combined effect of SCP, ASCVG, and IT use with external partners on IP, which provides theoretical and practical insights into the ways that manufacturing firms effectively use the SCP, ASCVG and IT use with external partners to heighten IP.

Exploring information technology (IT) sophistication in New South Wales residential aged care facilities

Objective The aim of this study was to determine baseline information technology (IT) sophistication in New South Wales (NSW), Australia, residential aged care facilities. Method IT sophistication measures IT capabilities, extent of IT use and IT integration in two domains, resident care and clinical support. A survey was administered to all NSW residential aged care facilities (n = 876) between February and May 2017. A 15% response rate was achieved (130/876). Facilities were organised by organisational type, total residential places and remoteness. Using post-stratification weights, estimates of IT sophistication scores for NSW were determined. Regression was used to examine whether there was a linear relationship between IT sophistication and the ratio of residents receiving high care. Results Participating facilities were similar to other NSW facilities in residential places and remoteness, but different in organisational type. IT sophistication was highest in IT capabilities and integration in resident care. IT sophistication was lowest in clinical support. Respondents had a mean of 1.2 years of IT experience. IT sophistication varied among aged care facilities. There was a linear relationship (P < 0.05) with the proportion of high-care residents and total IT sophistication Conclusion Routine reports of IT sophistication in aged care are not available. If data were available, determining the influence of IT sophistication on the quality care for residential aged care would be possible. What is known about the topic? Aged care settings that deliver care to the older population need to be contemporary in their approach to delivering high-quality and safe care. Health IT holds great potential for improving the quality and safety of care of older residents in aged care facilities. What does this paper add? This report provides a baseline assessment of IT capabilities, extent of IT use and IT integration, called IT sophistication, among aged care facilities with variable characteristics. What are implications for practitioners? Increasing IT sophistication has the potential to improve the quality of care delivered by aged care staff.

Information technology use for work and technostress: effects of power distance and masculinity culture dimensions

This study seeks to theorize on and examine the roles of information technology (IT) use for work combined with individual-level culture dimensions, namely power distance and masculinity, in technostress formation. The model is tested with structural equation modeling techniques applied to data collected from 485 employees in China. Results suggest that (1) the extent of IT use for work drives technostress, (2) technostress is further augmented in employees who are high in power distance and masculinity, (3) the effect of IT use on technostress is amplified for employees who are high in power distance and masculinity, and (4) the effect of IT use for work on technostress is influential primarily for employees with above average power distance and masculinity culture values.

A Report of Information Technology and Health Deficiencies in U.S. Nursing Homes.

The aim of the study was to investigate the impact of nursing home (NH) information technology (IT) sophistication on publically reported health safety deficiency scores documented during standard inspections. The sample included 807 NHs from every U.S. state. A total of 2187 health inspections were documented in these facilities. A national IT sophistication survey describing IT capabilities, extent of IT use, and degree of IT integration in resident care, clinical support, and administrative activities in U.S. NHs was used. The relationship between NH health deficiencies and IT sophistication survey scores was examined, using weighted regression. Controlling for registered nurse hours per resident day, deficiency scores decreased as total IT sophistication increased. Controlling for total IT sophistication score, deficiency scores decreased as registered nurse hours per resident day increased. Ownership status significantly influenced health deficiency scores. These results highlight the necessity to understand benefits of implementing NH IT and demonstrating its impact on patient safety.

Analyzing Change in Nursing Home Information Technology Sophistication: A 2-Year Survey

Nursing home (NH) health information technology (IT) is becoming more prevalent across the country. Currently, a national sample of NHs is being surveyed for 3 consecutive years to determine trends in NH IT sophistication (e.g., measures of IT capabilities, extent of IT use, IT integration with internal and external stakeholders). IT sophistication is measured in resident care, clinical support, and administrative activities. The current article provides details of the differences in NH IT sophistication reported by administrators completing Year 1 and Year 2 surveys. IT in clinical support (i.e., laboratory, pharmacy, and radiology) had the greatest differences. This difference is expected because these areas typically require external contracts, making it dificult to fit IT with existing workflows, which is important for sustained adoption. Factors associated with the extent of information technology use in Ontario hospitals

Owing to social and demographic changes, as well as rapid technological advances, the use of information technology (IT) in hospitals is more prevalent today. Consumers are demanding more from healthcare providers, and health IT is one method to deliver safer, more efficient, and more effective patient care. Hospitals are at the center of healthcare delivery and advances in use of IT as part of a provider system will directly impact healthcare delivery. This study helps define the factors associated with the use of IT in a publicly funded system. Urban location and hospital size are associated with the extent of IT use in Ontario. This study is concerned with the extent that IT is used in Ontario hospitals and the factors (hospital location, type, and size) that are associated with it.

Information Technology in Value Shop Activities

It has long been argued that knowledge reuse is positively related to the extent of information technology use in organizations. This article reports results from an exploratory survey of police investigation units in Norway to develop a research model linking knowledge reuse to IT use. Police investigation units are defined as value shops, where problems are solved in five primary activities.

Determinants of the adoption of Information Technology: a case study of electrical and electronic goods manufacturing firms in India

This study measures the intensity of adoption of Information Technology (IT) and identifies its determinants. In this paper, it is argued that the degree of IT adoption will be determined by the variables such as entrepreneurship, skill intensity, government policy, openness of economy, competitive environment, and other firm-specific factors. The results of Ordered Probit Model suggest that the qualification and information base of entrepreneurs and their attitude towards innovative activities and market share are significant determinants of the degree of IT adoption. The results also indicate that size of operations and skill intensity of the firms influenced the extent of IT use.

IT and small tourism enterprises: a case study of cottage-letting agencies

A survey was carried out to determine the extent of information technology use in the UK cottage holiday agency sector. Up to half the companies in the sector, which is characterized by many small businesses, did not use IT, despite its apparent suitability. Various factors for non-use are discussed, and a crucial one is found to be the symbolic connotations of IT. Success factors for those who use IT are examined and it is argued that a key factor is the ability to recognize the information needed to run the business. A tentative link to more general entrepreneurial qualities is suggested, but this requires further investigation.

The Finnish Delphi study: forecasting the extent of information technology use in libraries in 1996 and 2010

The Finnish Council for Scientific Information and Research Libraries funded a Delphi study to predict the extent of use of information technology in the years 1996 and 2010. A panel of Finnish experts was interviewed in two consecutive sessions. As a comparison group eleven international experts were also interviewed. The paper includes a tabular summary of the predictions and estimations given by both groups of experts.
