Community Health Workers’ Continuance of Mobile Health Applications: An Extended Expectation Confirmation Model

Mobile health applications (MHAs) have been widely used by community health workers (CHWs) in primary care to facilitate their workflow, but the continuance of these applications by CHWs remains inadequate. This article employs expectation confirmation theory as the overarching theory, complemented by the information system success model and the consumer expectations model, to propose a research model aimed at examining the factors influencing CHWs’ MHA continuance. To validate this research model, a survey was conducted involving 459 CHWs who used MHAs. The analysis results confirm many hypothetical relationships within the research model. First, we propose an extended expectation confirmation model remedying deficiency of the expectation confirmation theory. Second, this study uncovers an inverted U-shaped relationship between CHWs’ expectations and expectation confirmation. Third, we study continuance from a novel perspective – that of CHWs. Fourth, we reveal one boundary condition of our research model by considering the moderating role of health institution type. In addition, practical implications for both policymakers in healthcare systems and MHA providers are delivered.

Users' continuance intention towards an AI painting application: An extended expectation confirmation model.

With the rapid advancement of technology, Artificial Intelligence (AI) painting has emerged as a leading intelligence service. This study aims to empirically investigate users' continuance intention toward AI painting applications by utilizing and expanding the Expectation Confirmation Model (ECM), Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), and the Flow Theory. A comprehensive research model is proposed. A total of 443 questionnaires were distributed to users with AI painting experiences for data collection. The hypotheses were tested through structural equation modeling. The primary conclusions drawn from this research include: 1) Confirmation plays a crucial role, significantly and positively predicting satisfaction and social impact. 2) Personal innovativeness has a significant effect on confirmation. 3) Satisfaction, flow experience, and social influence directly and positively predict intention, with social influence showing the most significant impact, while perceived usefulness, perceived enjoyment, and performance expectancy show no significant impact on intention. 4) Habit plays a negative moderating role in the association between social influence and continued intention to use. These findings offer valuable insights and inspiration for users seeking to understand the appropriate utilization of AI painting and provide actionable directions for the development of AI painting.

Factors influencing continuance intention to use mobile banking: an extended expectation-confirmation model with moderating role of trust

This study explores the impacts of user adaptation and its antecedents, including perceived usefulness, self-efficacy, and subjective norm on continuance intention towards mobile banking. Based on (1) extended expectation-confirmation model, (2) adaptive structuration theory for individuals, and (3) decomposed theory of planned behavior, and by incorporating user adaptation and trust perspectives, this study proposes and validates a research model by using convenient and snowball sampling techniques, face-to-face survey with a sample of 523 consumers of large banks in Vietnam. The partial least squares structural equation modeling SmartPLS 4.0 software is employed for data analysis. The research findings reveal that (1) except for subjective norm, perceived usefulness, satisfaction, adaptation, and self-efficacy significantly impact continuance intention; (2) trust moderates the relationship between adaptation and continuance intention. Theoretical and managerial implications are provided to broaden the information technology continuance literature, suggesting how banks should sustain strong relationships with mobile banking customers.

Exploring students’ acceptance and continuance intention in using immersive virtual reality and metaverse integrated learning environments: The case of an Italian university course

AbstractImmersive virtual reality (IVR) and Metaverse applications are gaining attention in the educational field, showing potentials in transforming traditional learning methods by supporting active and experiential forms of learning. Our study, conducted within the context of an Italian university course, employs the Extended Expectation-Confirmation Model (EECM) as a theoretical framework to explore the key aspects of students’ acceptance and continued intention to use IVR and Metaverse integrated learning environments in educational settings. The EECM, which bridges the gap between pre-adoption expectations and post-adoption experiences, provides a comprehensive perspective for exploring technology adoption in education. Students’ attitudes were assessed before and after they completed an elective course offered by the university that delved into IVR and Metaverse applications. During the course, students explored the theoretical and practical applications of these technologies, engaging in a variety of experiences, from immersive relaxation exercises to immersive educational platforms in the emerging Metaverse. Contrary to common assumptions, pre-adoption factors like performance and effort expectancy had limited impact on expectancy confirmation. However, when students’ initial expectations matched their experiences, their perceptions of the technology’s usefulness, satisfaction, and confidence in its use were positively enhanced, influencing their continued intention to integrate these tools in education.

Unveiling the Dynamics of Expectation, Flow, Enjoyment, and Satisfaction: Drivers of Continued Subscription Intentions Among Netflix Users

"Research Aims: This study investigates the determinants impacting the intention of Netflix users to continue using the platform. By leveraging the extended Expectation-Confirmation Model of continued IT usage and hedonic variables, including Confirmation, Flow, Perceived Usefulness, Perceived Enjoyment, and Satisfaction, the research aims to discern the most influential factors. Design/Methodology/Approach: The research recruited 271 participants through non-probabilistic purposive sampling, targeting Indonesian Netflix subscribers active within the preceding six months who were at least 17 years old at the time of the study. Covariance-based Structural Equation Modelling was employed to analyse the collected data. Research Findings: User enjoyment and Satisfaction mediate the relationships between Flow and Confirmation with Netflix's continuance intention. Flow emerges as the preeminent determinant of continuance intention among the exogenous variables. While Flow's influence on continuance intention is mediated by Satisfaction and Enjoyment, there is no direct effect between Flow and Satisfaction. Perceived Usefulness exhibits no substantial correlation with continuance intention. Theoretical Contribution/Originality: This research underscores the pivotal role of Flow in driving enjoyment and continuance intention within video subscription services like Netflix. Managerial Implications in the South East Asian Context: The study offers insights into the preferences and behaviours of Netflix users in the Southeast Asian context, employing Indonesia as a focal point. This valuable information equips Netflix and other regional SVOD providers to strategically enhance their offerings and services. Research Limitations & Implications: To enhance the robustness of the findings, future research should encompass broader and more diverse populations for comparative purposes. Including new variables, such as digital piracy and perceived ease of use, would contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the dynamics at play. Continuance Intention Pada Aplikasi Mobile Payment Dengan Menggunakan Extended Expectation Confirmation Model

This study aims to identify the factors that influence the intention to continue using the mobile payment application during the new normal period after the COVID-19 pandemic, using the Extended Expectation Confirmation Model (EECM) approach. EECM combines aspects of the Expectation Confirmation Model (ECM) with other external factors, ECM is used to understand and explain decision-making related to the continued use of mobile payments. This research was conducted by analyzing data from respondents who have used mobile payment applications after the pandemic. The data was collected through an online survey and analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with the help of Analysis of Moment Structures (AMOS) software, 406 individuals were selected to serve as research participants. The results of the analysis show that factors such as satisfaction, and trust have a significant influence on the continuance intention of mobile payments. In addition, in the context of the new normal, factor such as social influence factors are known to have no significant influence on mobile payment continuance intention. As a result, this research contributes to understanding the factors that influence the intention to continue using mobile payment applications. The validity and reliability test results show that the survey instrument used has an adequate level of validity and reliability, supporting the quality and reliability of the analysis conducted.

Factors that Parents in South Africa Consider in Support of their Children’s Continuous Use of Online Learning

One of the lessons learnt during the COVID-19 pandemic is the need for technology to connect and communicate. Schools learnt to use technology as tools of teaching and learning, as well as connecting with parents. Such gains need not be discarded now that the pandemic has subsided. The purpose of this study was to investigate factors that parents in South Africa consider significant in allowing their children to continue using online learning. The extended expectation-confirmation model, with eight constructs, was used to explain this phenomenon using a sample of 358 participating parents. The model was analysed using partial least squares structural equation modeling, while SmartPLS3 was employed in the analysis of the data. The results showed that the factors that parents in South Africa consider significant in allowing their children to continue using online learning were statistically significant. The seven factors (constructs) identified in the model explained 74.6% of the variance in support of continuous use of online learning. This was an overwhelming support for continuance to use online learning by their children, based on its benefits. This work contributed to the body of knowledge by developing a model for predicting the continued use of educational technologies (online learning), especially in developing countries. One of the shortcomings of the study is that it only included parents of learners in one district of South Africa. As a result, generalising the findings to other high schools elsewhere should be done with caution.

Continuance Intention on Gamifikasi in E-Learning Using Extended Expectation-Confirmation Model

In an effort to examine user continuance intentions after using gamification in e-learning, this research was conducted to identify the factors that influence gamification in e-learning using the theoretical model of ECM, then analyze the relationship between the influencing construct variables, and explain the practical and theoretical implications of the effect of gamification in e-learning on user's continued intention to reuse. The theoretical model was developed from the Extended Expectation-Confirmation model (ECM) by integrating the influencing determinants. Descriptive analysis and hypothesis testing using the SEM technique used the Amos 24 application to analyze and interpret data from 496 respondents who participated in an online questionnaire distributed via chat applications and social media. Significant test results have been found for users after using gamification in e-learning, the confirmation variable has a high positive correlation in influencing satisfaction according to the expectations felt by users. The results of the Pearson correlation test conducted show that if the value of gamification user satisfaction in e-learning increases, the intention to continue using e-learning will also increase as found in the five hypothetical determinants that have a direct effect on continuous intention, namely perceived usefulness, satisfaction, engagement, flow, perceived enjoyment. The practical meaning of the findings has a significant effect on continuous intention for educational institutions to research and develop innovative online learning models with gamification to increase the level of user participation, for teachers to ensure that the implementation of the gamification feature has a positive direct effect on sustainability intentions, for users to be able to provide confirmation of benefits obtained with a sense of satisfaction to continue using gamification in e-learning. This study predicts the continuance intention of gamification users in e-learning by analyzing theoretical models influenced by 4 basic ECM constructs plus 3 exogenous variables of engagement, perceived enjoyment and flow. Testing the construct hypothesis, presenting a comprehensive SEM analysis, producing direct and indirect positive significance tests on continuous intention.

Continuous usage intention of mobile health services: model construction and validation

BackgroundMobile health (mHealth) services can not give full play to their value if only it is used in the short term, and their continuous usage can achieve better effects in health management. This study aims to explore the factors that affect continuous usage intentions of mHealth services and their mechanism of action.MethodsFirst, considering the uniqueness of health services and social environmental factors, this study constructed an extended Expectation Confirmation Model of Information System Continuance (ECM-ISC) to investigate factors that may influence the intention of continuous usage of mHealth services based on three dimensions, namely individual characteristics, technology and environment. Second, the survey method was used to validate the research model. The questionnaire items were derived from validated instruments and discussed by experts and data were collected both online and offline. The structural equation model was used for data analysis.ResultsThere were 334 avidity questionnaires through cross-sectional data and these participants had used mHealth services ever. The reliability and validity of the test model were good, in which Cronbach’s Alpha values of 9 variables exceeded 0.9, composite reliability 0.8, the average variance extracted value 0.5, and the factor loading 0.8. The modified model had a good fitting effect and strong explanatory power. It accounted for 89% of the variance in expectation confirmation, 74% of the variance in perceived usefulness, 92% of the variance in customer satisfaction, and 84% of the variance in continuous usage intention. Compared with the initial model hypotheses, perceived system quality was deleted according to the heterotrait-monotrait ratio, so paths related to it were deleted; perceived usefulness wasn’t positively associated with customer satisfaction, and its path was also deleted. Other paths were consistent with the initial hypothesis. The two new added paths were that subjective norm was positively associated with perceived service quality (β = 0.704, P < 0.001), and perceived information quality (β = 0.606, P < 0.001). Electronic health literacy (E-health literacy) was positively associated with perceived usefulness (β = 0.379, P < 0.001), perceived service quality (β = 0.200, P < 0.001), and perceived information quality (β = 0.320, P < 0.001). Continuous usage intention was influenced by perceived usefulness (β = 0.191, P < 0.001), customer satisfaction (β = 0.453, P < 0.001), and subjective norm (β = 0.372, P < 0.001).ConclusionsThe study constructed a new theoretical model including E-health literacy, subjective norm and technology qualities to clarify continuous usage intention of mHealth services, and empirically validated the model. Attention should be paid to E-health literacy, subjective norm, perceived information quality, and perceived service quality to improve continuous usage intention of users and self–management by mHealth Apps managers and governments. This research provides solid evidence for the validity of the expanded model of ECM-ISC in the mHealth field, which can be a theoretical and practical basis for mHealth operators’ product research and development.

Factor Analysis of Continuance Intention to Use QR Code Mobile Payment Services: An Extended Expectation-Confirmation Model (ECM)

&#x0D; &#x0D; &#x0D; &#x0D; QR code mobile payment is a payment method that is quite popular in Indonesia where users only need to open or display a QR code on the m-payment application when making transactions. Users can make payments easily, anywhere and anytime. Apart from the benefits of QR codes on m-payments, there are still obstacles regarding the intention to continue using them. Some users stopped using the QR code service on the m-payment application due to the potential risks involved. The purpose of this study is to find out what factors can affect continued intention to use QR code m-payment. The research model used is the Extended Expectation-Confirmation Model (ECM) by combining ECM and UTAUT and adding trust and perceived risk variables. The number of samples in this study was 313 participants who were users who had used QR code m-payment OVO, GoPay, or ShopeePay with a minimum age of 17 years. The sampling technique used is purposive sampling. This study uses quantitative methods and data analysis with the PLS-SEM approach using SmartPLS version 3. The results of this study are three rejected hypotheses and nine accepted hypotheses. Based on the accepted hypotheses, it shows that social influence, trust, and satisfaction affect continuance intention to use QR code m-payment. Social influence is the biggest factor affecting continuance intention to use QR code m-payment service. These results can be considered for developers and companies such as OVO, GoPay, and ShopeePay. &#x0D; &#x0D; &#x0D; &#x0D;

Understanding Chinese teachers' informal online learning continuance in a mobile learning community: an intrinsic-extrinsic motivation perspective.

While extensive studies on informal online learning have been well documented to afford teachers' collaborative learning and knowledge sharing, little is still known about their motivational factors regarding the continuance intention of informal online learning. To this end, an extended expectation confirmation model (ECM) was proposed including intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. The proposed research model and several hypotheses were empirically evaluated using questionnaire surveys with the valid data collected from 231 Chinese in-service teachers in the shared mobile learning community. The results consolidate the appropriateness of the extended ECM to explain teachers' informal online learning continuance. Specifically, satisfaction is the major determinant of continuance intention, followed by perceived usefulness and intrinsic motivation. In addition, extrinsic motivation positively predicts perceived usefulness and confirmation. The results of this study provide some theoretical and practical implications into in-service teachers' continuance intention of informal online learning.

Determinants of continuance intention towards e-learning during COVID-19: an extended expectation-confirmation model

ABSTRACT A growing number of governments have shifted education from face-to-face classes towards e-learning to contain COVID-19. In light of the pandemic, this study examined the key drivers that lead to the continuance intention of university students towards e-learning. The theoretical framework clarifies the role of attitude, satisfaction, and perceived usefulness in enhancing students’ continuance intention. The research model was empirically validated by analysing the data collected from 490 students taking online classes through partial least squares (PLS). The findings show that attitude plays a significant role in leveraging the continuance intention towards e-learning. The analysis results show that social distancing attitude positively affects both attitude towards e-learning and social distancing intention. Risk perception is found to serve as the vital predictor of social distancing attitude and social distancing intention. In addition, the results indicate that satisfaction is the prevailing antecedent of continuance intention. Perceived usefulness is revealed to positively affect both continuance intention and satisfaction. Confirmation of expectations is validated to significantly influence satisfaction and perceived usefulness. Some insights for research and practice are suggested.

Investigating Patients' Continuance Intention Toward Conversational Agents in Outpatient Departments: Cross-sectional Field Survey.

Conversational agents (CAs) have been developed in outpatient departments to improve physician-patient communication efficiency. As end users, patients' continuance intention is essential for the sustainable development of CAs. The aim of this study was to facilitate the successful usage of CAs by identifying key factors influencing patients' continuance intention and proposing corresponding managerial implications. This study proposed an extended expectation-confirmation model and empirically tested the model via a cross-sectional field survey. The questionnaire included demographic characteristics, multiple-item scales, and an optional open-ended question on patients' specific expectations for CAs. Partial least squares structural equation modeling was applied to assess the model and hypotheses. The qualitative data were analyzed via thematic analysis. A total of 172 completed questionaries were received, with a 100% (172/172) response rate. The proposed model explained 75.5% of the variance in continuance intention. Both satisfaction (β=.68; P<.001) and perceived usefulness (β=.221; P=.004) were significant predictors of continuance intention. Patients' extent of confirmation significantly and positively affected both perceived usefulness (β=.817; P<.001) and satisfaction (β=.61; P<.001). Contrary to expectations, perceived ease of use had no significant impact on perceived usefulness (β=.048; P=.37), satisfaction (β=-.004; P=.63), and continuance intention (β=.026; P=.91). The following three themes were extracted from the 74 answers to the open-ended question: personalized interaction, effective utilization, and clear illustrations. This study identified key factors influencing patients' continuance intention toward CAs. Satisfaction and perceived usefulness were significant predictors of continuance intention (P<.001 and P<.004, respectively) and were significantly affected by patients' extent of confirmation (P<.001 and P<.001, respectively). Developing a better understanding of patients' continuance intention can help administrators figure out how to facilitate the effective implementation of CAs. Efforts should be made toward improving the aspects that patients reasonably expect CAs to have, which include personalized interactions, effective utilization, and clear illustrations.

Drivers of post-adoption of e-wallet among academics in Palestine: An extension of the expectation confirmation model.

E-wallet is one of the latest innovations in the field of payments. However, despite numerous studies on the adoption of e-finance systems, the post-adoption phase is largely neglected. In this paper, we use the extended Expectation Confirmation Model (ECM) to address this gap by focusing on the study of consumers’ continuous intentions regarding the use of an e-wallet service. We conducted an electronic questionnaire-based survey among 503 e-wallet users in Palestine. Using structural equation modeling to analyze the conceptual model of the study, our results confirm that satisfaction, trust, and perceived usefulness have a significant impact on consumers’ continuous intention regarding e-wallet. In addition, the study found that perceived security has an insignificant impact on consumer satisfaction. The study has several implications: E-wallet providers should improve their services in terms of performance, privacy, and security to ensure customer loyalty in this competitive industry.

How Micro-Lectures Improve Learning Satisfaction and Achievement: A Combination of ECM and Extension of TAM Models

This study aimed to examine the potential of micro-lectures as effective technology-based learning media in mathematics. It proposed a hypothesis that using micro-lectures affects learning satisfaction and achievement in mathematics. Data were collected using a questionnaire developed from the acceptance model theory (TAM) and the extended Expectation Confirmation Model (ECM). Respondents comprised 233 students from six classes that used micro-lectures to learn mathematics for one semester at a public junior high school. The data were analyzed quantitatively using structural equation modeling assisted by SMART PLS 3.0 software. The results showed that perceived usefulness was the most significant factor in the learning achievement. Student attitude towards micro-lectures was the strongest positive factor in learning satisfaction. Furthermore, the proposed model explained 76.9% and 77.3% of the factors related to learning and satisfaction in using micro-lectures, respectively. It implies that micro-lectures affect learning satisfaction and achievement in mathematics. These results indicate that using micro-lectures in mathematics lessons increases learning satisfaction and achievement. They could assist schools, teachers, and local education ministries in planning, evaluating, and implementing micro-lectures in teaching and learning activities to improve education quality.

Mobile wallets adoption: pre- and post-adoption dynamics of mobile wallets usage

PurposeThe main objectives of this study are (1) to identify the determinants of pre- and post-adoption dynamics of mobile wallets (m-wallets) usage; (2) to propose and test the linkage framework of pre-adoption and post-adoption dynamics to understand consumers' psyche of m-wallets usage and (3) to examine the moderation of select demographic variables in the path of consumers' continued usage of m-wallets.Design/methodology/approachThe study considered a cross-sectional approach using a questionnaire survey method. The research model encapsulating pre- and post-adoption dynamics of the m-wallet was examined using a sample of 574 users. The analysis also comprised mediation, moderation and multi-group analysis (MGA).FindingsThe results identified key antecedents of confirmation, such as performance expectancy, effort expectancy, facilitating conditions and individual mobility. Findings also confirmed the partial mediation effects of satisfaction between confirmation and continuance intentions. Results also confirmed the moderating effects of age and education on the relationship between confirmation and satisfaction.Originality/valueThe key contribution of the study is in the form of research progression related to m-wallet usage to test the extended expectation-confirmation model (EECM) in the Indian context by linking the pre-adoption paradigm of extended (unified theory of acceptance and use of technology) UTAUT with individual mobility and post-adoption dynamics of the ECM. The considered framework study also draws support for the role of select demographic variables.

Examining the effect of radical innovation and incremental innovation on leading e-commerce startups by using expectation confirmation model

The purpose of this study is to compare the effect of strategic entrepreneurship through different innovation approach between two leading digital multi-sided platform (MSP) e-commerce startups, Bukalapak, that use incremental innovation approach, and Shopee that use radical innovation approach to face the business challenge during Covid-19 pandemic. Using structural equation modeling (SEM) with the partial least squares method, the researchers use an extended expectation confirmation model (ECM) from a customer point of view to analyze the effect of the innovation efforts. A questionnaire was distributed to people who purchased a Bukalapak or Shopee online shopping application during the covid pandemic with the purposive sampling method. Finally, the analysis was performed with a total of 300 samples from Bukalapak and Shopee users. The results show that confirmation positively impacts perceived enjoyment, satisfaction, and customer engagement in both Bukalapak and Shopee cases. The results also show that perceived enjoyment and satisfaction engagement positively impact continuance intention as the manifestation of innovation. However, in the Bukalapak case that performs incremental innovation, the customer engagement is insignificant on continuance intention, while it is significant in the Shopee case that performs radical innovation. This study suggests enabling the customers to engage more in an e-commerce platform through a radical innovation approach by providing services beyond e-commerce scope (ex: mini-game, gamification activities, etc.) will likely lead to favorable responses and lasting relationships.

Understanding the influence of user adaptation on the continuance intention towards ride-hailing services: the perspective of management support

This study investigates the influences of management support and behavioural adaptation on continuance intention to use ride-hailing services. Based on an extended expectation-confirmation model and by incorporating management support and user adaptation, this study proposes a research model and verifies the hypotheses using structural equation modelling with data gathered from face-to-face interviews of 472 user-drivers of dominant ride-hailing companies in Vietnam. The findings reveal that (1) perceived usefulness, satisfaction and behavioural adaptation have a determinant impact on continuance intention, (2) while management support has no significant direct association with continuance intention, the link is fully mediated by behavioural adaptation, and (3) user adaptation is also verified to be a partial mediator of the relationship of perceived usefulness and continuance intention. Both theoretical and managerial implications are provided to broaden the current understanding of the adaptation literature, suggesting that firms build stronger relationships with their user-drivers, thus sustaining firm success.

Exploring the Determinants of Users’ Continuance Intention to Use Mobile Banking Services in Kuwait : Extending the Expectation-Confirmation Model

While a great body of information systems (IS) literature has discussed mobile banking (m-banking) services, most of these studies have focused on the adoption or acceptance phases of this technology; with little attention was given to users’ intension to continue using such technology. This paper aims at investigating the most important factors that predict users’ continuous intension to use m-banking services in the post-adoption phase. This paper presents a conceptualization and validation of an extended expectation-confirmation model (ECM). A total of 303 Kuwaiti users of m-banking services participated in this study. Partial least squares (PLS) of structure equation modelling (SEM) technique was used to analyze the data. The results mainly showed that users’ continuous intension to use m-banking services is significantly influenced by perceived trust, satisfaction, self-efficacy, performance expectancy and effort expectancy. Theoretical and practical contributions as well as the research limitations and future directions are discussed.

Usability and Acceptance of Wearable Biosensors in Forensic Psychiatry: Cross-sectional Questionnaire Study.

BackgroundThe use of wearable biosensor devices for monitoring and coaching in forensic psychiatric settings yields high expectations for improved self-regulation of emotions and behavior in clients and staff members. More so, if clients have mild intellectual disabilities (IQ 50-85), they might benefit from these biosensors as they are easy to use in everyday life, which ensures that clients can practice with the devices in multiple stress and arousal-inducing situations. However, research on (continuous) use and acceptance of biosensors in forensic psychiatry for clients with mild intellectual disabilities and their caretakers is scarce. Although wearable biosensors show promise for health care, recent research showed that the acceptance and continuous use of wearable devices in consumers is not as was anticipated, probably due to low expectations.ObjectiveThe main goal of this study was to investigate the associations between and determinants of the expectation of usability, the actual experienced usability, and the intention for continuous use of biosensors.MethodsA total of 77 participants (31 forensic clients with mild intellectual disabilities and 46 forensic staff members) participated in a 1-week trial. Preceding the study, we selected 4 devices thought to benefit the participants in domains of self-regulation, physical health, or sleep. Qualitative and quantitative questionnaires were used that explored the determinants of usability, acceptance, and continuous use of biosensors. Questionnaires consisted of the System Usability Scale, the Technology Acceptance Model questionnaire, and the extended expectation confirmation model questionnaire.ResultsOnly the experienced usability of the devices was associated with intended continuous use. Forensic clients scored higher on acceptance and intention for continuous use than staff members. Moderate associations were found between usability with acceptance and continuous use. Staff members showed stronger associations between usability and acceptance (r=.80, P<.001) and usability and continuous use (r=.79, P<.001) than clients, who showed more moderate correlations between usability and acceptance (r=.46, P=.01) and usability and continuous use (r=.52, P=.003). The qualitative questionnaires in general indicated that the devices were easy to use and gave clear information.ConclusionsContrary to expectations, it was the actual perceived usability of wearing a biosensor that was associated with continuous use and to a much lesser extent the expectancy of usability. Clients scored higher on acceptance and intention for continuous use, but associations between usability and both acceptance and continuous use were markedly stronger in staff members. This study provides clear directions on how to further investigate these associations. For example, whether this is a true effect or due to a social desirability bias in the client group must be investigated. Clients with mild intellectual disabilities might benefit from the ease of use of these devices and their continuing monitoring and coaching apps. For these clients, it is especially important to develop easy-to-use biosensors with a minimum requirement on cognitive capacity to increase usability, acceptance, and continuous use.
