Terrestrial and marine POC export fluxes estimated by 234Th–238U disequilibrium and δ13C measurements in the East China Sea shelf

AbstractThe use of 234Th–238U disequilibrium has been widely employed to estimate the sinking flux of particulate organic carbon (POC) from the upper sea and ocean. Here, the deficits of 234Th relative to 238U in the water column and the carbon isotope signature (δ13C) of POC in the East China Sea (ECS) Shelf were measured, which was used to distinguish the fraction of marine and terrestrial POC export fluxes. In the ECS Shelf, very strong deficits of 234Th relative to 238U were observed throughout the water column, with 234Th/238U activity ratios ranging from 0.158 ± 0.045 to 0.904 ± 0.068 (averaging 0.426 ± 0.159). The residence times of particle reactive radionuclide 234Th (τTh–T) in the ECS shelf water varied between 9 and 44 days, which is significantly shorter than that in the continental slope area or the basin area. This phenomenon indicates that there is a more rapid particle scavenging process in the ECS shelf water compared to the continental slope and basin upper water. By applying a two-end-member mixing model based on the δ13C, the fraction of terrestrial POC was estimated to be 0 to 74% (mean: 30 ± 22%) and the fraction of marine POC was in the range of 25% to 100% (mean: 70 ± 22%). Fluxes of marine and terrestrial POC settling to the seafloor exhibited significant spatial differences among different stations, ranging from 11 to 129 mmol C/m2/day and from 2.6 to 38 mmol C/m2/day, respectively. The averaged terrestrial POC fluxes in the southern and northern ECS Shelf were similar (~ 21 to 24 mmol C/m2/day), while the marine POC fluxes in the north (86 ± 37 mmol C/m2/day) were approximately four times higher than those in the south (26 ± 20 mmol C/m2/day). Interestingly, the estimated export flux of both marine and terrestrial POC were approximately one order of magnitude higher than the previously reported burial fluxes of POC (ranging from 1.1 ± 0.1 to 11.4 ± 1.1 mmol C/m2/day) in the underlying bottom sediments, indicating that the majority (> 90%) of both terrestrial and marine POC exported from the upper water column are degraded in the sediments of the ECS Shelf. This “carbon missing” phenomenon can greatly be attributed to rapid decomposition by other processes (including microbial reworking, cross-shelf transport, and possible consumption by benthic organisms). Our findings highlight the dynamic nature of carbon cycling in the continental shelf and the need for further research to understand these processes and improve carbon budget assessments.

Decadal decreasing trend in biological carbon pump estimated from 234Th in the western subarctic North Pacific

We measured thorium-234 (234Th), particulate organic carbon (POC), and chlorophyll a in the western subarctic North Pacific surface layer in 1997–2008. 234Th, POC, and chlorophyll a in the surface layer showed clear seasonal changes. As a result of approximation by using a trigonometric function, 234Th export flux estimated from the deficiency of 234Th relative to 238U and the ratio of POC to particulate 234Th (POC/234ThP) indicated constant and decreasing trends in the study area from 1997 to 2008, respectively. POC export flux estimated from 234Th decreased in the study area, showing that the strength of the biological carbon pump in this region declined in the studied decade. The ratio of POC/chlorophyll a decreased during the term. These trends were possibly caused by a decline in not the biomass but particle size of phytoplankton. Our results suggest that not only the biological carbon pump but also phytoplankton community structure change in the western subarctic Pacific Ocean in a decade.

Channel cross-section heterogeneity of particulate organic carbon transport in the Huanghe

Abstract. The Huanghe (Yellow River), one of the largest turbid river systems in the world, has long been recognized as a major contributor of suspended particulate matter (SPM) to the ocean. However, over the last few decades, the SPM export flux of the Huanghe has decreased over 90 % due to the high management, impacting the global export of particulate organic carbon (POC). To better constrain sources and modes of transport of POC beyond the previously investigated transportation of POC near the channel surface, SPM samples were for the first time collected over a whole channel cross-section in the lower Huanghe. Riverine SPM samples were analyzed for particle size and major element contents, as well as for POC content and dual carbon isotopes (13C and 14C). Clear vertical and lateral heterogeneities of the physical and chemical properties of SPM are observed within the river cross-section. For instance, finer SPM carry more POC in general with higher 14C activity near the surface of the right bank. Notably, we discuss how bank erosion in the alluvial plain is likely to generate lateral heterogeneity in POC composition. The Huanghe POC is millennial-aged (4020 ± 500 radiocarbon years) and dominated by organic carbon (OC) from the biosphere, while the lithospheric fraction is ca. 12 %. The mobilization of aged and refractory OC, including radiocarbon-dead biospheric OC, from deeper soil horizons of the loess–paleosol sequence through erosion in the Chinese Loess Plateau is an important mechanism contributing to fluvial POC in the Huanghe drainage basin. Altogether, anthropogenic activities can drastically change the compositions and transport dynamics of fluvial POC, consequentially altering the feedback of the source-to-sink trajectory of a river system to regional and global carbon cycles.

Composition of the sinking particle flux in a hot spot of dinitrogen fixation revealed through polyacrylamide gel traps

Diazotrophs regulate marine productivity in the oligotrophic ocean by alleviating nitrogen limitation, contributing to particulate organic carbon (POC) export to the deep ocean. Yet, the characterization of particles composing the sinking POC flux has never been explored in such ecosystems. Moreover, the contribution of the direct gravitational export of diazotrophs to the overall flux is seldom assessed. Here we explore the composition of the sinking POC flux in a hot spot of N2 fixation (the western sub-tropical South Pacific) using polyacrylamide gel-filled traps deployed at two stations (S05M and S10M) and three depths (170 m, 270 m, 1000 m) during the TONGA expedition (November-December 2019). Image analyses of particles collected in the gels was used to classify them into 5 categories (fecal aggregates, phytodetrital aggregates, mixed aggregates, cylindrical fecal pellets, and zooplankton carcasses). Fecal aggregates were the most abundant at both stations and all depths and dominated the flux (average of 56 ± 28% of the POC flux), followed by zooplankton carcasses (24 ± 19%), cylindrical fecal pellets (15 ± 14%) and mixed aggregates (5 ± 4%), whereas phytodetrital aggregates contributed less (<1%). Since N isotope budgets show that export is mainly supported by diazotrophy at these stations, these results suggest that the diazotroph-derived N has been efficiently transferred to the foodweb up to zooplankton and fecal pellets before being exported, pleading for an indirect export of diazotrophy. However, random confocal microscopy examination performed on sinking particles revealed that diazotrophs were present in several categories of exported particles, suggesting that diazotrophs are also directly exported, with a potential contribution to overall POC fluxes increasing with depth. Our results provide the first characterization of particle categories composing the sinking flux and their contribution to the overall flux in a hot spot of N2 fixation.

Aggregating Synechococcus contributes to particle organic carbon export in coastal estuarine waters: Its lineage features and assembly processes

The release and deposition of phytoplankton-derived particulate organic matter is crucial in marine carbon export, yet the roles of picoplankton in these processes were seldom considered. Therefore, this study aimed to shed light on the matter by investigating the aggregating (AG) lifestyle of Synechococcus, a main group of picoplankton, in the coastal waters of the Yellow River Estuary with ample sediments acting as ballast minerals. We revealed that AG Synechococcus constituted a substantial portion, maximally reaching up to 85.4 %, of the total Synechococcus population. Pearson correlations and random forest (RF) regression analyses found significant connections (p < 0.01) between AG Synechococcus and the content of particulate organic carbon (POC), which emphasized its underlying role in facilitating POC export in this region. Furthermore, by employing high-throughput sequencing of the RNA polymerase gene (rpoC1), it was demonstrated that S5.1 clade I exhibited a significantly higher proportion in the AG fraction than in the free-living (FL) fraction (p < 0.05). This suggests distinct inclinations in the phylogenetic preference for different Synechococcus lineages between different lifestyles in the studied area. Finally, we ascertained “small-world” and higher robustness attributes of aggregates formed through the co-occurrence construction between Synechococcus and heterotrophic bacteria, likely facilitated by the reciprocal exchange of carbon and nitrogen elements. Overall, these findings have implications for our understanding of the role of Synechococcus in the ecology and biogeochemistry of marine ecosystems, and they are significant for more accurately evaluating the contribution of picophytoplankton in ocean carbon export.

Efficient biological carbon export to the mesopelagic ocean induced by submesoscale fronts

Oceanic submesoscale processes are ubiquitous in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre (NPSG), where the biological carbon pump is generally ineffective. Due to difficulties in collecting continuous observations, however, it remains uncertain whether episodic submesoscale processes can drive significant changes in particulate organic carbon (POC) export into the mesopelagic ocean. Here we present observations from high-frequency Biogeochemical-Argo floats in the NPSG, which captured the enhanced POC export fluxes during the intensifying stages of a submesoscale front and a cyclonic eddy compared to their other life stages. A higher percentage of POC export flux was found to be transferred to the base of mesopelagic layer at the front compared to that at the intensifying eddy and the mean of previous studies (37% vs. ~10%), suggesting that the POC export efficiency was significantly strengthened by submesoscale dynamics. Such findings highlight the importance of submesoscale fronts for carbon export and sequestration in subtropical gyres.

Particulate organic carbon export fluxes across the Seychelles-Chagos thermocline ridge in the western Indian Ocean using 234Th as a tracer

We investigated the export flux of particulate organic carbon (POC) using 234Th as a tracer in the western Indian Ocean along 60°E and 67°E transects in 2017 and 2018. The Seychelles-Chagos Thermocline Ridge (SCTR), where production is relatively high due to nutrient replenishment by upwelling of subsurface water, was observed at 3°S – 12°S in 2017 and 4°S – 13°S both 60°E and 67°E in 2018. POC fluxes in 2017 showed no differences between the SCTR and non-SCTR regions. However, in 2018, the POC fluxes in the SCTR regions (8.52 ± 7.89 mmol C m–2 d–1) were one order of magnitude higher than those observed in the non-SCTR regions (0.63 ± 0.07 mmol C m–2 d–1), which appeared to be related to the strong upwelling of subsurface water. These POC fluxes were comparable to those observed under bloom conditions, and thus, are important for estimating the efficiency of carbon sequestration in the ocean.

Including land management in a European carbon model with lateral transfer to the oceans

The use of cover crops (CCs) is a promising cropland management practice with multiple benefits, notably in reducing soil erosion and increasing soil organic carbon (SOC) storage. However, the current ability to represent these factors in land surface models remains limited to small scales or simplified and lumped approaches due to the lack of a sediment-carbon erosion displacement scheme. This precludes a thorough understanding of the consequences of introducing a CC into agricultural systems. In this work, this problem was addressed in two steps with the spatially distributed CE-DYNAM model. First, the historical effect of soil erosion, transport, and deposition on the soil carbon budget at a continental scale in Europe was characterized since the early industrial era, using reconstructed climate and land use forcings. Then, the impact of two distinct policy-oriented scenarios for the introduction of CCs were evaluated, covering the European cropping systems where surface erosion rates or nitrate susceptibility are critical. The evaluation focused on the increase in SOC storage and the export of particulate organic carbon (POC) to the oceans, compiling a continental-scale carbon budget. The results indicated that Europe exported 1.95 TgC/year of POC to the oceans in the last decade, and that CCs can contribute to reducing this amount while increasing SOC storage. Compared to the simulation without CCs, the additional rate of SOC storage induced by CCs peaked after 10 years of their adoption, followed by a decrease, and the cumulative POC export reduction stabilized after around 13 years. The findings indicate that the impacts of CCs on SOC and reduced POC export are persistent regardless of their spatial allocation adopted in the scenarios. Together, the results highlight the importance of taking the temporal aspect of CC adoption into account and indicate that CCs alone are not sufficient to meet the targets of the 4‰ initiative. Despite some known model limitations, which include the lack of feedback of erosion on the net primary productivity and the representation of carbon fluxes with an emulator, the current work constitutes the first approach to successfully couple a distributed routing scheme of eroded carbon to a land carbon model emulator at a reasonably high resolution and continental scale. Short abstractA spatially distributed model coupling erosion, transport, and deposition to the carbon cycle was developed. Then, it was used to simulate the impact of cover crops on both erosion and carbon, to show that cover crops can simultaneously increase organic carbon storage and reduce particulate organic carbon export to the oceans. The results seemed persistent regardless of the spatial distribution of cover crops.

Sinking fate and carbon export of zooplankton fecal pellets: insights from time-series sediment trap observations in the northern South China Sea

Abstract. The sinking of zooplankton fecal pellets is a key process in the marine biological carbon pump, facilitating the export of particulate organic carbon (POC). Here, we analyzed zooplankton fecal pellets collected by two time-series sediment traps deployed on mooring TJ-A1B in the northern South China Sea (SCS) from May 2021 to May 2022. The results show a seasonal variability in both fecal pellet numerical (FPN) flux and fecal pellet carbon (FPC) flux, with peaks in November to April and June to August. It implies that the fecal pellet flux is largely regulated by the East Asian monsoon system. Vertical analysis further shows that FPN and FPC fluxes are higher at 1970 than at 500 m water depth, with larger pellets occurring in the deeper water, indicating a significant influence of mesopelagic and bathypelagic zooplankton community and lateral transport on deep-sea FPC export. However, the biovolume of amorphous pellets decreases significantly from 500 to 1970 m water depth, implying that these fecal pellets are broken and fragmented during the sinking process, possibly due to zooplankton grazing and disturbance by deep-sea currents. The contribution of fecal pellets to total POC export in the northern SCS is on average 3.4 % and 1.9 % at 500 and 1970 m water depth, respectively. This study highlights that the sinking fate of fecal pellets is regulated by marine primary productivity, deep-sea-dwelling zooplankton communities, and deep-sea currents in the tropical marginal sea, thus providing a new perspective for exploring the carbon cycle in the world ocean.

Carbon and silica fluxes during a declining North Atlantic spring bloom as part of the EXPORTS program

The goal of NASA's EXport Processes in the Ocean from RemoTe Sensing (EXPORTS) project is to develop a predictive understanding of the fate of global ocean primary productivity and export of carbon from the surface to the deep ocean. Thorium-234 (234Th, t1/2 = 24.1 d) was used to measure sinking particle export from an anticyclonic eddy during the EXPORTS North Atlantic cruise (May 2021) at the Porcupine Abyssal Plain. The four-week sampling period was broken into three time periods (“epochs”) where 800 234Th seawater samples were collected from over 50 CTD casts with high depth resolution over the upper 500 m. Size-fractioned particulate samples were collected to determine particulate organic carbon (POC) and biogenic silica (bSi) to 234Th ratios using in situ McLane pumps. A 234Th non-steady state model shows an eddy center epoch average progression of increasing 234Th export (∼2800 ± 300 (Epoch 1; standard deviation) to 4500 ± 700 (Epoch 3) dpm m−2 d−1) out of the top 110 m of the water column over the course of the cruise (29 d). This translates into an epoch average progression of ∼11 ± 1 to 14 ± 2 mmol C m−2 d−1 of sinking POC flux, and ∼ 3 ± 1 to 6 ± 1 mmol bSi m−2 d−1 of sinking bSi flux to deeper waters at 110 m. The overall efficiency of the biological carbon pump (amount of net primary production reaching 100 m below the euphotic zone) increases from ∼10% to ∼30% throughout the sampling period. The temporal trends discussed extensively in this paper show that POC and bSi export increase during diatom bloom evolution.

Nanoplanktonic diatom rapidly alters sinking velocity via regulating lipid content and composition in response to changing nutrient concentrations

Diatom sinking plays a crucial role in the global carbon cycle, accounting for approximately 40% of marine particulate organic carbon export. While oceanic models typically represent diatoms as microphytoplankton (&amp;gt; 20 μm), it is important to recognize that many diatoms fall into the categories of nanophytoplankton (2-20 μm) and picophytoplankton (&amp;lt; 2 μm). These smaller diatoms have also been found to significantly contribute to carbon export. However, our understanding of their sinking behavior and buoyancy regulation mechanisms remains limited. In this study, we investigate the sinking behavior of a nanoplanktonic diatom, Phaeodactylum tricornutum (P. tricornutum), which exhibits rapid changes in sinking behavior in response to varying nutrient concentrations. Our results demonstrate that a higher sinking rate is observed under phosphate limitation and depletion. Notably, in phosphate depletion, the sinking rate of P. tricornutum was 0.79 ± 0.03 m d-1, nearly three times that of the previously reported sinking rates for Skeletonema costatum, Ditylum brightwellii, and Chaetoceros gracile. Furthermore, during the first 6 h of phosphate spike, the sinking rate of P. tricornutum remained consistently high. After 12 h of phosphate spike, the sinking rate decreased to match that of the phosphate repletion phase, only to increase again over the next 12 hours due to phosphate depletion. This rapid sinking behavior contributes to carbon export and potentially allows diatoms to exploit nutrient-rich patches when encountering increased nutrient concentrations. We also observed a significant positive correlation (P&amp;lt; 0.001) between sinking rate and lipid content (R = 0.91) during the phosphate depletion and spike experiment. It appears that P. tricornutum regulates its sinking rate by increasing intracellular lipid content, particularly digalactosyldiacylglycerol, hexosyl ceramide, monogalactosyldiacylglycerol, and triglycerides. Additionally, P. tricornutum replaces phospholipids with more dense membrane sulfolipids, such as sulfoquinovosyldiacylglycerol under phosphate shortage. These findings shed light on the intricate relationship between nutrient availability, sinking behavior, and lipid composition in diatoms, providing insights into their adaptive strategies for carbon export and nutrient utilization.

Export of particulate organic carbon and nitrogen to the northern Indian Ocean by the monsoonal rivers of India.

This study analyses particulate organic carbon (POC) and particulate nitrogen (PN) export from Indian monsoonal rivers to the north Indian Ocean. Indian monsoonal rivers export approximately 1.2 Tg yr-1 (1Tg = 1012g) of POC and 0.14 Tg yr-1 of PN, with about two-thirds entering the Bay of Bengal (0.8 and 0.1 Tg yr-1, respectively) and the remaining reaches to the Arabian Sea (0.4 and 0.04 Tg yr-1, respectively). Remarkably, just four rivers from northwest India's black soil-dominated regions contribute about half of the total POC and PN exports (0.64 and 0.06 Tg yr-1, respectively). This is due to substantial erosion in these catchments, resulting in suspended matter concentrations averaging 596 ± 252mg L-1, significantly higher than catchments dominated by red sandy, red loamy and alluvial soils (54 ± 56mgl-1). In contrast, rivers originating from catchments with heavy precipitation, a tropical wet climate, red loamy soils (with peaty and marshy characteristics), rich tropical wet evergreen and moist deciduous forests, and higher soil organic carbon content yield more POC and PN (1704 ± 383 kgC km-2yr-1 and 261 ± 56 kgN km-2yr-1, respectively) than the other rivers of India (951 ± 508 kgC km-2yr-1 and 120 ± 57 kgN km-2yr-1, respectively). These findings stress that the export flux and yield of POC and PN from the Indian monsoonal rivers are primarily influenced by the interplay of hydrological, lithological, environmental, and climatic conditions within the catchment, rather than river size. Moreover, this study highlights the significant impact of incorporating POC data from medium-sized rivers worldwide, as it reveals that yield is independent of river size. This calls for a re-evaluation of global POC export fluxes, taking into account hydrological, lithological, environmental, and climatic factors.

A novel method to sample individual marine snow particles for downstream molecular analyses

AbstractThe ocean–atmosphere exchange of carbon largely depends on the balance between carbon export of particulate organic carbon (POC) as sinking marine particles, and POC remineralization by attached microbial communities. Despite the vast spectrum of types, sources, ages, shapes, and composition of individual sinking particles, they are usually considered as a bulk together with their associated microbial communities. This limits our mechanistic understanding of the biological carbon pump (BCP) and its feedback on the global carbon cycle. We established a method to sample individual particles while preserving their shape, structure, and nucleic acids by placing a jellified RNA‐fixative at the bottom of drifting sediment traps. Coupling imaging of individual particles with associated 16S rRNA analysis reveals that active bacterial communities are highly heterogenous from one particles origin to another. In contrast to lab‐made particles, we found that complex in situ conditions lead to heterogeneity even within the same particle type. Our new method allows to associate patterns of active prokaryotic and functional diversity to particle features, enabling the detection of potential remineralization niches. This new approach will therefore improve our understanding of the BCP and numerical representation in the context of a rapidly changing ocean.

Planktonic microbial signatures of sinking particle export in the open ocean’s interior

A considerable amount of particulate carbon produced by oceanic photosynthesis is exported to the deep-sea by the “gravitational pump” (~6.8 to 7.7 Pg C/year), sequestering it from the atmosphere for centuries. How particulate organic carbon (POC) is transformed during export to the deep sea however is not well understood. Here, we report that dominant suspended prokaryotes also found in sinking particles serve as informative tracers of particle export processes. In a three-year time series from oceanographic campaigns in the Pacific Ocean, upper water column relative abundances of suspended prokaryotes entrained in sinking particles decreased exponentially from depths of 75 to 250 m, conforming to known depth-attenuation patterns of carbon, energy, and mass fluxes in the epipelagic zone. Below ~250 m however, the relative abundance of suspended prokaryotes entrained in sinking particles increased with depth. These results indicate that microbial entrainment, colonization, and sinking particle formation are elevated at mesopelagic and bathypelagic depths. Comparison of suspended and sinking particle-associated microbes provides information about the depth-variability of POC export and biotic processes, that is not evident from biogeochemical data alone.

The Role of Glacier Erosion in Riverine Particulate Organic Carbon Export

AbstractBiospheric particulate organic carbon (POCbio) burial and rock petrogenic particulate organic carbon (POCpetro) oxidation are opposing long‐term controls on the global carbon cycle, sequestering and releasing carbon, respectively. Here, we examine how watershed glacierization impacts the POC source by assessing the concentration and isotopic composition (δ13C and Δ14C) of POC exported from four watersheds with 0%–49% glacier coverage across a melt season in Southeast Alaska. We used two mixing models (age‐weight percent and dual carbon isotope) to calculate concentrations of POCbio and POCpetro within the bulk POC pool. The fraction POCpetro contribution was highest in the heavily glacierized watershed (age‐weight percent: 0.39 ± 0.05; dual isotope: 0.42 (0.37–0.47)), demonstrating a glacial source of POCpetro to fjords. POCpetro was mobilized via glacier melt and subglacial flow, while POCbio was largely flushed from the non‐glacierized landscape by rain. Flow normalized POCbio concentrations exceeded POCpetro concentrations for all streams, but surprisingly were highest in the heavily glacierized watershed (mean: 0.70 mgL−1; range 0.16–1.41 mgL−1), suggesting that glacier rivers can contribute substantial POCbio to coastal waters. Further, the most heavily glacierized watershed had the highest sediment concentration (207 mgL−1; 7–708 mgL−1), and thus may facilitate long‐term POCbio protection via sediment burial in glacier‐dominated fjords. Our results suggest that continuing glacial retreat will decrease POC concentrations and increase POCbio:POCpetro exported from currently glacierized watersheds. Glacier retreat may thus decrease carbon storage in marine sediments and provide a positive feedback mechanism to climate change that is sensitive to future changes in POCpetro oxidation.

Effect of an Open Central American Seaway on Ocean Circulation and the Oxygen Minimum Zone in the Tropical Pacific From Model Simulations

AbstractThe tectonic closure of the Central American Seaway (CAS) during the mid‐Miocene to mid‐Pliocene (∼16–3 Ma BP) is thought of as a key interval for the onset of the present‐day tropical Pacific oxygen minimum zone (OMZ). In this study we investigate the impact of an open CAS on the ocean circulation and the OMZ in the tropical Pacific. We perform a series of sensitivity experiments with the Kiel Climate Model, where we vary the CAS sill depth from shallow to deep. We find that the eastern tropical Pacific OMZ was less developed during the period of an open CAS. This is driven mainly by an enhanced eastward subsurface current that facilitated an increased oxygen supply from the western tropical Pacific. In addition, a small decrease in net marine primary production and subsequent weaker export of particulate organic carbon induced less subsurface oxygen consumption in the Eastern Equatorial Pacific.

Export of Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC) compared to the particulate and active fluxes near South Georgia, Southern Ocean

Quantifying the relative contributions of the export of particulate organic carbon (POC), dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and active fluxes by migrating organisms is essential to understand the functioning and vulnerability of the ocean's biological pump. However, these fluxes are rarely measured at the same time. Here we provide a first simultaneous comparison of these biological pump components in the region of South Georgia. We use a combination of in-situ data and an inverse model to calculate the DOC export and the suspended POC export and compare them to the sinking POC and active export. We find that, in this region, the DOC total export contributes about 6.6% (23.0–37.5 mg C m−2 day−1) to the total export flux, the active flux has no discernible contribution, and the sinking POC flux is dominant with a mean value of 409 mg C m−2 day−1. Diapycnal fluxes of DOC obtained from the cruise data constitute only a minor fraction (0.05–1.28 mg C m−2 day−1) of the total DOC export estimated by the inverse model and are exceeded on average by the diapycnal flux of suspended POC. Our results also indicate that the total export of DOC is driven by isopycnal transport. Future fieldwork in the region of South Georgia should focus on quantifying the isopycnal flux of DOC. Future measurement campaigns should also aim to simultaneously measure the particulate, dissolved and active components of the biological pump at contrasting locations and at different times to resolve the variability of their relative contribution.

Anthropogenic Perturbations Change the Quality and Quantity of Terrestrial Carbon Flux to the Coastal Ocean

AbstractHuman activities have increasingly changed terrestrial particulate organic carbon (POC) export to the coastal ocean since the Industrial Age (19th century). However, the influence of human perturbations on the composition and flux of terrestrial biospheric and petrogenic POC sub‐pools remains poorly constrained. Here, we examined 13C and 14C compositions of bulk POC and source‐specific biomarkers (fatty acids, FA) from two nearshore sediment cores collected in the Pearl River‐derived mudbelt, to determine the impacts of human perturbations of the Pearl River watershed on the burial of terrestrial POC in the coastal ocean over the last century. Our results show that although agricultural practices and deforestation during the 1930s–1950s increased C4 plant coverage in the watershed, the export fluxes of terrestrial biospheric and petrogenic POC remained rather unchanged; however, added perturbations since 1974, including increasing coal consumption, embankment and dam constructions caused massive export of both petrogenic POC and relatively fresh terrestrial biospheric POC from the river delta. Our data reveal that human activities substantially enhance the transfer of petrogenic POC and fresh biospheric POC to the coastal ocean after ca. 1974, with the latter process acting as an important sink for anthropogenic CO2.

Particulate organic carbon export fluxes estimates by 234Th[sbnd]238U disequilibrium in the oxygen minimum zone off the Peruvian coast

The Peruvian upwelling zone is one of the most productive marine ecosystems in the world with a spectacular, pronounced oxygen minimum zone (OMZ). Globally OMZs are increasing in size and intensity with far-reaching consequences for the marine biological carbon pump and carbon export; thus, these zones need to be carefully monitored to be able to understand future climate change impacts. The current study was carried out in 2013 and 2017 to quantify the vertical flux of organic matter exported out of the productive surface layer by measuring 234Th238U disequilibria in the water column. Samples were collected in January 2013 and May 2017 along an identical transect located at 12°S off the Peruvian coast near Lima, Peru. Th-234 fluxes ranged from 0 to 2088 ± 95 dpm m−2 d−1 in 2013 and 698 ± 63 to 3648 ± 113 dpm m−2 d−1 in 2017. The corresponding POC fluxes varied between 0 and 164.2 ± 7.9 mg C m−2 d−1 in 2013 and 22.7 ± 2.7 to 133.1 ± 15.2 mg C m−2 d−1 in 2017, with POC fluxes gradually decreasing with distance from the coast. Despite higher POC fluxes, the export efficiencies were found to be extremely low due to high particle remineralization rates observed within the euphotic zone.

Spatial distribution of vertical carbon fluxes on the Agulhas Bank and its possible implication for the benthic nepheloid layer

Vertical particle fluxes of particulate organic carbon (POC), chlorophyll a (Chl a) and biogenic silica (bSi) were measured on the productive shelf of southern Africa, the Agulhas Bank (AB), in March 2019. Sinking particulate material in the form of aggregates is hypothesized to form the benthic nepheloid layer (BNL) which is a turbid layer found near the seabed. This layer is known to affect the spawning success of squid as it is linked to high turbidity which reduces visibility during mating. To determine the distribution of fluxes and particle composition in the AB, we collected water samples below the surface mixed layer (‘export’) and near the seabed (‘bottom’) using a Marine Snow Catcher. POC export fluxes were significantly higher inshore than offshore (mean ± SD: 944.6 ± 302.0 & 461.1 ± 162.1 mg POC m−2 d−1, respectively). There was no significant difference in the cross-shelf distribution of Chl a and bSi export fluxes, however the inshore fluxes of Chl a and bSi were higher than offshore, suggesting a link between export fluxes and sinking organic matter derived from the more productive inshore surface waters. All bottom fluxes were significantly higher inshore, suggesting the contribution of sinking organic particles and resuspended bottom sediments to inshore fluxes. POC export efficiency (ratio of exported POC flux relative to net primary production (NPP)) was higher on the AB (range: 0.58–9.56) compared to the global shelf seas ratio of 0.18 and not related to NPP, suggesting an export of standing stock of carbon biomass, likely produced before the cruise. Transfer efficiency (i.e., the amount of exported flux that reaches the bottom) was also high (max: 0.99, 1.0 and 33.04 for POC, Chl a and bSi, respectively) but did not show a clear spatial pattern. We observed a significant positive correlation between bottom turbidity (a proxy for BNL presence) and export POC flux, suggesting the possibility that sinking organic matter is contributing to BNL formation on the AB.
