This study aims to provide a comprehensive picture of current conditions and future research potential in innovative ambidexterity research. To achieve this goal, this study uses a bibliometric approach, the data sources used are secondary data sources, where the data used is in the form of 81 research articles taken in the Scopus database. In addition, selected articles are published by well-known publishers, namely Elsevier, Inderscience Publishers, Springer, Emerald, Routledge, Cogent, and Sage Publications. The results of the co-occurrence analysis and thematic map outline various emerging research topics in its clusters. Dimanqa cluster 1 covers issues such as Construction Industry, Corporate Social Responsibility, Environmental Innovation, Finance, Functional Laterity, Hemispheric Dominance, Human Resources Management, Management Practice, Manufacturing, Microfoundation, Open Innovation, Performance, Social Capital, and Sustainability. Cluster 2 raised topics such as business development, competitiveness, digital transformation, information management, information processing, innovation performance, investment, marketing, organizational framework, performance assessment, regression analysis, social network, and sustainability development. Meanwhile, cluster 3 highlights The third cluster consists of empirical analysis, entrepreneurial orientation, exploitation, exploration, industrial performance, intellectual capital, pharmaceutical industry, strategic entrepreneuship, technological development. The fourth cluster consists of business performance, dynamic capabilities, enterprise resource management, industrial management, information analysis, knowledge management, knowledge transfer, least squares approxima, radical innovation. Curvilinear effect of policy intensity on innovation performance in the integrated circuit industry: Too much of a good thing?

The improvement of innovation performance is critical to the high-quality development of the integrated circuit industry. Regional innovation cannot be delivered and sustained without the help of governments. This paper uses negative binomial regression to investigate the quadratic relationship between policy intensity and innovation performance in the integrated circuit industry at the city level and reveals how network centrality moderates this relationship. The results are given as follows. First, policy intensity exhibits an inverted U-shaped relationship with innovation performance. Second, after network centrality is introduced, the relationship between policy intensity and innovation performance shows a shape-flip from inverted U-shaped in low network centrality to U-shaped in high network centrality. Third, compared with exploitative innovation performance, exploratory innovation performance is more sensitive to policy intensity and needs higher network centrality to change the link from an inverted U-shaped to a U-shaped relationship. This research reveals the importance of incorporating cooperation into the interactive framework between policy and innovation, which provides guidance for fostering innovation in the global integrated circuit industry.

Effect of empowerment: how and when do high-involvement work practices influence elder employees' innovative performance?

In today's fast-paced business environment, innovation from elder employees is increasingly vital to organizations. High-involvement work practices that emphasize engagement and empowerment have a significant impact on the innovation performance of these employees, harnessing their wealth of experience and fostering organizational growth. However, most of the current research on innovation performance focuses on the single factor of the individual or the organization, and most of them focus on the linear relationship; research on the factor of human resource practices, in particular high-involvement work practices, is inadequate. Based on social exchange theory, this paper uses structural equation modeling (SEM) to examine the impact of high-involvement work practices on elder workers' innovation performance using 278 valid samples from three time points, and the non-linear effects of exploratory and exploitative innovation on elder workers' innovation performance. (1) There is no significant relationship between high-involvement work practices and elder employees' innovation performance. (2) Exploratory innovation has a significant U-shaped relationship with innovation performance, i.e., as the level of exploratory innovation increases, the innovation performance of elder employees first decreases and then increases. There is a significant inverted U-shaped relationship between exploitative innovation and innovation performance, i.e., as the level of exploitative innovation increases, innovation performance first increases and then decreases. High-involvement work practices have a U-shaped effect on elder employees' innovation performance through exploitative innovation. (3) Transformational leadership moderates the direct effects of high-involvement on exploratory innovation and elder employees' innovation performance, and transformational leadership moderates the U-shaped effect of high-involvement work practices on elder employees' innovation performance through exploratory innovation. The conclusion is helpful for organizations to enhance elder employees' innovation performance by enriching high-involvement work practices.

Performance implications of exploratory and exploitative innovation: the role of management control systems

Drawing on prominent theories of innovation, this study investigates the inter-relationships between the use of management control systems (MCS), exploratory innovation, exploitative innovation, and firm performance in Vietnam, an emerging market. The research hypotheses were empirically tested using a partial least squares-structural equation model. Data were collected by survey questionnaires from a sample of 238 top-level and middle-level managers in Vietnamese firms. The results confirm that the diagnostic use of MCS has a significant positive effect on exploitative innovation and the interactive use of MCS has a significant positive effect on both exploratory innovation and exploitative innovation. The results also reveal that exploitative innovation and exploratory innovation partially mediate the relationship between the interactive use of MCS and firm performance. Understanding these relationships can assist Vietnamese firms to invest appropriately in MCS that is able to promote innovation actions, thereby achieving outstanding performance.

The impact of network orientation and entrepreneurial orientation on startup innovation and performance in emerging economies: The moderating role of strategic flexibility

While considerable scholarly attention has been paid to firm performance and prosperity, the performance implications of network and entrepreneurial orientations of startups in emerging economies are admittedly under-explained. Based on the resource-based view (RBV) and strategic fit theory, this study develops a research model to examine the impact of network orientation and entrepreneurial orientation on startup performance in emerging economies. The model also examines how this relationship is mediated through exploratory and exploitative innovation and moderated by strategic flexibility. Using data from a survey of 273 startups, the findings suggest that, at the initial and growth stages, entrepreneurial orientation has a greater impact on startup performance than network orientation. Exploratory innovation has a mediating effect on network orientation and startup performance. Exploitative innovation has a mediating effect on entrepreneurial orientation, network orientation, and startup performance. In the initial stage, exploitative innovation has a greater impact on startup performance, while in the growth stage, exploratory innovation has a greater impact on startup performance. Strategic flexibility plays a positive moderating role in the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation, exploratory innovation, exploitative innovation, and startup performance. These findings provide significant contributions to understanding the growth and performance of startups in emerging economies from a strategic and innovation-oriented perspective.

Does customer participation moderate the effects of innovation on cost-based financial performance? An examination of different forms of customer participation

Although the importance of customer participation in innovation is recognized in theoretical and managerial fields, few studies have shed light on the interaction effects of different forms of customer participation on the relationship between a firm’s innovation orientation and cost-based financial performance. This study empirically examined the moderating effect of customer participation as information providers (CPI), co-developers (CPC), and innovators (CPN), on the relationship between a firm’s innovation orientation and cost-based financial performance. We focus on two types of innovation orientation: exploitative and exploratory innovation. Finally, we used data from 272 manufacturing industry respondents of the Korean Innovation Survey. The results show a non-linear U-shaped relationship between exploitative innovation and financial performance. Further, CPI (CPN) positively (negatively) moderates this relationship. This study provides important theoretical and managerial implications for adopting and managing customer participation in a firm’s innovation orientation.

The Roles of Top Management Team Innovation Orientation and Institutional Support on Organisational Learning and Innovation Performance

Through the upper echelons and institutional theories, this study examines how top management team (TMT) innovation orientation and institutional support facilitate organisational learning and pave the way for innovation performance. A hierarchical regression analysis was conducted using 552 entrepreneurial enterprises in mainland China. Our findings indicate that TMT innovation orientation positively mediates the relationship between organisational learning and innovation performance. Likewise, we found that institutional support positively moderates the relationship between organisational learning and TMT innovation orientation. The implications draw TMTs’ attention to consider enriching their innovation orientation by leveraging institutional support for their organisational learning and explorative and exploitative innovation performance. Lastly, government-tailored policies are essential to augment TMT innovation orientation to benefit their organisational learning and innovation performance.

Research on the Impact of Ambidextrous Innovation on Sustainable Entrepreneurial Performance from a Policy-Oriented Perspective

Based on the theory of dynamic capability theory, this study takes 671 listed companies in China’s ICT industry from 2010 to 2021 as a sample to explore the impact mechanism of policy-oriented ambidextrous innovation on sustainable entrepreneurial performance. The study found that exploratory innovation can promote sustainable entrepreneurial performance, but both government subsidy and environmental tax will weaken the relationship between exploratory innovation and sustainable entrepreneurial performance. Exploitative innovation can promote sustainable entrepreneurial performance, but environmental tax will weaken the relationship between exploitative innovation and sustainable entrepreneurial performance. The main contributions of this study include the following. (1) Unlike previous studies that focus on the impact of ambidextrous innovation on corporate financial performance, this study is forward-looking in pointing out the importance of sustainable entrepreneurial performance, and explores the impact of ambidextrous innovation on sustainable entrepreneurial performance. (2) This study proposes a theoretical framework for government policy analysis, arguing that government policy should not only focus on its support policies (government subsidy), but also on regulatory policies (environmental tax). (3) The conclusions of this study have certain reference significance for enterprises to correctly use government policies, construct appropriate ambidextrous innovation strategies, and improve sustainable entrepreneurial performance.

What role does enterprise social network play? A study on enterprise social network use, knowledge acquisition and innovation performance

PurposeIn order to explore the role of enterprise social network (ESN), this study examines how the different dimensions of ESN use – within teams and across teams – facilitate knowledge acquisition in organizations and how knowledge acquisition, in turn, impacts exploitative and exploratory innovation performance.Design/methodology/approachThis study applied the survey approach to collect a valid sample of 150 Chinese companies that had innovation activities and were using ESN. The partial least squares (PLS) technique was used for data analysis to test the research model and hypotheses.FindingsESN use within teams has a positive impact on knowledge depth and knowledge breadth, and ESN use across teams has a positive impact on knowledge depth. Knowledge depth and knowledge breadth are both beneficial for innovation performance. The two types of ESN use have different impacts on knowledge depth and knowledge breadth; moreover, knowledge depth and knowledge breadth have different impacts on innovation performance. Specifically, the impacts of ESN use within teams and across teams on exploitative innovation performance are mediated by knowledge depth; the impact of ESN use within teams on exploratory innovation performance is mediated by knowledge breadth.Originality/valueThis paper can enhance the understanding of the importance of ESN use and ESN's role in facilitating knowledge acquisition and innovation performance.

The Influence of Knowledge Base on the Dual-Innovation Performance of Firms

Dual innovation, which includes exploratory innovation and exploitative innovation, is crucial for firms to obtain a sustainable competitive advantage. The knowledge base of firms greatly influences or even determines the scope, direction, and path of their dual-innovation activities, which drive their innovation process and produce different innovation performances. This study uses data source patents obtained by 285 focal firms in the Chinese new-energy vehicle industry in the period 2015–2020. Five knowledge-base features are selected by analyzing the correlation and multicollinearity, and four different firm clusters are found by using the k-means clustering algorithm. Based on the classification and regression tree (CART) algorithm, we mine the potential decision rules governing the dual-innovation performance of firms. The results show that the exploratory innovation performance of firms in different clusters is mainly affected by two different knowledge-base features. Knowledge-base scale is a key factor affecting the exploitative innovation performance of firms. Firms in different clusters can improve their dual-innovation performance by rationally tuning the combination of knowledge-base features.

Market orientation and innovation on corporate performance

This study aims to examine and analyze the influence of market orientation on corporate performance with exploration innovation and exploitative innovation as mediation in SMEs. 85 respondents were used as samples from food and beverage sector SMEs at Sentra Siola Surabaya. Purposive sampling was used as the sampling method. Data analysis in this study used Structural Equation Modeling - Partial Least Square (SEM PLS). The result indicates that market orientation has a significant effect on exploration innovation, exploitative innovation, and corporate performance. Exploration innovation has a significant effect on corporate performance; therefore, exploration innovation partially mediates the effect of market orientation on corporate performance. However exploitative innovation was found to have no effect on corporate performance. Changes in external factors, primarily due to the COVID-19 pandemic, are seen as being able to cause a paradigm shift on the importance of a long-term orientation compared to a short-term orientation.

The impact of enterprise niche on dual innovation performance: moderating role of innovation openness

PurposeThis paper aims to explore the impact of enterprise niche on dual innovation performance and the moderating role of innovation openness on the relationship between enterprise niche and dual innovation performance.Design/methodology/approachThis study uses the panel data of the enterprise technology patents of China's Top 100 Electronic Information Enterprises from 2009 to 2018. Multiple regression analyses were used to test the hypotheses.FindingsNiche width has a significant positive impact on exploitative and exploratory innovation performance. Niche overlap has an inverted U-shaped effect on exploitative innovation performance and significantly positively affects exploratory innovation performance. Innovation openness negatively moderates the impact of niche width on exploitative innovation performance and positively moderates the impact of niche overlap on exploitative innovation performance.Originality/valueThis study provides new insights into the effects of enterprise niche on dual innovation performance by showing the moderating role of innovation openness. The study finds a strategic logic of moderate niche overlap, clarifies the innovative effect of different innovation openness modes and reveals the construction and management mechanisms of enterprise niche and innovation openness strategy.

Dual Innovation Performance through Knowledge-Based Network Structure: Evidence from Electronic Information Industry

This study analyzes how knowledge-based network affects the dual innovation performance. Dual innovation includes exploratory and exploitative innovation, and knowledge-based network represents the relationships among knowledge-based elements. We take 269 enterprises having gone public in Shanghai and Shenzhen stock markets of the electronic information industry of China as samples and get the patent data for 5 years from 2014 to 2018. We consider building the knowledge-based network structure based on social network analysis method, and measure three features of the knowledge-based network, that are density, centralization and structure hole. We test the relationship between three network features and dual innovation performance through negative binomial regression method. The results indicate that there is an inverted U-Curve relationship between density and exploitative innovation performance. There is an inverted U-curve relationship between centralization and exploratory innovation performance. There is an inverted U-curve connection between the structure hole and the dual innovation performance.

Entrepreneurship, Competitiveness and Innovation

This Special Issue, “Entrepreneurship, Competitiveness and Innovation”, comprises a selection of papers addressing approaches and tools to understand how entrepreneurship and innovation can be good vehicles for competitiveness. These studies address the multifaceted topics surrounding entrepreneurship, such as exploratory and exploitative innovation performance, inter-enterprise knowledge, clusters, entrepreneurial orientation, learning orientation, sustainable growth, etc. These topics include the definitions of the concepts of entrepreneurship, innovation, and competitiveness, as well as the identification of factors affecting these types of phenomena. Perspectives guiding the design of entrepreneurship and innovation are presented to be considered when implementing public policies for increasing economic growth and competitiveness. Papers use some support theories to explain the topics studied here, such as cluster theory, resources-based theory, social theory and institutional theory, among others. Thus, in general, this Special Issue is devoted to the study of the benefits of entrepreneurship, innovation practices, and competitiveness in various countries and regions worldwide, but mainly in China. Therefore, this Special Issue is of particular value for both academic research and the context of business.

The Influence of Inter-Enterprise Knowledge Heterogeneity on Exploratory and Exploitative Innovation Performance: The Moderating Role of Trust and Contract

Improving enterprise innovation performance is key for enterprises to obtain sustainable competitiveness. With the increasingly fierce market competition of technological and product innovation, acquiring external heterogeneous knowledge of alliance enterprises becomes core to improving innovation performance. In this paper, we constructed a theoretical model to present the effect of inter-enterprise knowledge heterogeneity and alliance network governance mechanisms on enterprise innovation performance. We selected high-tech enterprises as the research object for empirical research and reached the following conclusions: (1) Inter-enterprise knowledge heterogeneity has a positive effect on exploratory and exploitative innovation performance, and (2) trust and contract have a moderating effect on the relationship between inter-enterprise knowledge heterogeneity and enterprise innovation performance.

The role of exploitative and exploratory innovation in export performance: an analysis of plastics industry SMEs

Innovation capabilities are important for firms to compete in the market. However, the literature has rarely examined how exploitative and exploratory innovation influences the export performance of small and medium-sized firms (SMEs). As exploitative and exploratory innovation plays different roles in sustaining SMEs' competitive advantages, this article presents an analysis of how four specific firms' innovation capabilities (i.e. marketing, strategy, research and development and manufacturing capabilities) impact these SMEs' export performance. Moreover, this study analysed how exploitative and exploratory innovation capabilities mediate the relationship of the four firms' internal innovation capabilities and export performance. The results indicate that exploitative innovation positively influences SMEs' export performance, but exploratory innovation does not. Another interesting finding is that strategy and manufacturing capabilities are important antecedents of both exploratory and exploitative innovation. Furthermore, the results reveal that only manufacturing capabilities have a direct impact on export performance, whereas strategy and manufacturing capabilities are the antecedents that most influence exploitative innovation and export performance.

The double-edged effects of the corporate venture capital unit's structural autonomy on corporate investors' explorative and exploitative innovation

Although most prior literature on the strategic value of corporate venture capital (CVC) investments has focused solely on its role as an explorative learning method, in reality, many corporate investors are also using CVC investments for exploitative learning to strengthen their existing business model. In this study, we focus on the operational aspects of CVC investments and discuss how the explorative and exploitative innovation performance of corporate investors is affected by the level of the structural autonomy granted to their CVC dedicated unit. Using 20 years of panel data from 77 corporate investors in U.S. high-tech industries, we find that the structural autonomy of the CVC unit exhibits a positive relationship with the corporate investor's explorative innovation performance, while it is negatively related with exploitative innovation performance.

Multi-dimensional Influence of Dynamic Capabilities on Innovation Performance in Knowledge-intensive Service Enterprises

How to enhance enterprise’s innovation performance is an important problem which is well worth thinking when the knowledge-based economy is opening up increasingly today. Taking the knowledge-intensive service enterprises as the example, we have made empirical study on how the different dimensions of dynamic capabilities, namely, sensing capability, learning capability and reconfiguring capability, affect the innovation performance of both exploration and exploitation. This study constructs and verifies a model of multi-dimensional dynamic capabilities to innovation performance using exploratory factor analysis and regression analysis. Result shows that enhancing any of sensing capability and learning capability in dynamic capabilities helps improve enterprises’ exploratory and exploitative innovation performance. Sensing capability and learning capability affect exploratory innovation performance more than exploitative innovation performance. Reconfiguring capability plays a positively significant regulating role in the relationship between sensing capability and exploratory innovation performance. Therefore, when enhancing the innovation performance, a knowledge-intensive service enterprise should not only make efforts to cultivate the sensing capability for technology and market and learning capability for external knowledge, but also enhance reconfiguring capability for both of internal and external resources to form the foundation for future competiveness. This study contributes to previous research by showing how sensing capability and learning capability affect the various dimensions of innovation performance under the regulating effects of reconfiguring capability in dynamic capabilities.
