High-rate intercity quantum key distribution with a semiconductor single-photon source

Quantum key distribution (QKD) enables the transmission of information that is secure against general attacks by eavesdroppers. The use of on-demand quantum light sources in QKD protocols is expected to help improve security and maximum tolerable loss. Semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are a promising building block for quantum communication applications because of the deterministic emission of single photons with high brightness and low multiphoton contribution. Here we report on the first intercity QKD experiment using a bright deterministic single photon source. A BB84 protocol based on polarisation encoding is realised using the high-rate single photons in the telecommunication C-band emitted from a semiconductor QD embedded in a circular Bragg grating structure. Utilising the 79 km long link with 25.49 dB loss (equivalent to 130 km for the direct-connected optical fibre) between the German cities of Hannover and Braunschweig, a record-high secret key bits per pulse of 4.8 × 10−5 with an average quantum bit error ratio of ~ 0.65% are demonstrated. An asymptotic maximum tolerable loss of 28.11 dB is found, corresponding to a length of 144 km of standard telecommunication fibre. Deterministic semiconductor sources therefore challenge state-of-the-art QKD protocols and have the potential to excel in measurement device independent protocols and quantum repeater applications.

On-demand quantum light sources for underwater communications

Quantum communication has been at the forefront of modern research for decades, however it is severely hampered in underwater applications, where the properties of water absorb nearly all useful optical wavelengths and prevent them from propagating more than, in most cases, a few metres. This research reports on-demand quantum light sources, suitable for underwater optical communication. The single photon emitters, which can be engineered using an electron beam, are based on impurities in hexagonal boron nitride. They have a zero phonon line at ∼436 nm, near the minimum value of water absorption and are shown to suffer negligible transmission and purity loss when travelling through water channels. These emitters are also shown to possess exceptional underwater transmission properties compared to emitters at other optical wavelengths and are utilised in a completely secure quantum key distribution experiment with rates of kbits s−1.

Simplified decoy-state quantum key distribution based on planar lightwave circuit integration module

The BB84 protocol with decoy states for quantum key distribution (QKD) has generated significant interest due to its theoretical unconditional security. Presently, the most of QKD systems demonstrated rely on bulk optics. Nevertheless, in upcoming large-scale commercial availability, it is imperative to have highly integrated, consistently performing, and cost-effective systems. Photonic integrated circuits (PICs) based on silica planar lightwave circuits (PLCs) play a crucial role in QKD due to its mature manufacturing process, excellent stability, low loss, and high integration level. We develop a simplified BB84 time-bin QKD experiment system that can significantly improve the key rate because it does not require time basis decoding. And two silica PLC asymmetric Mach-Zehnder interferometer (AMZI) module are used with a high-precision temperature control system (±0.01 °C). Three quantum states |ψ0⟩, |ψ1⟩ and |ψ+⟩ are encoded and decoded with the module. The system achieves an estimated key rate about 3.4 Mbps using an analytical model with one decoy state at a clock repetition rate of 1.25 GHz. Finally, we experimentally obtain a key rate of 531 kbps over a 20 km single-mode fiber (SMF) at a clock repetition rate of 156.25 MHz.

NuQKD: A Modular Quantum Key Distribution Simulation Framework for Engineering Applications

AbstractAn experimental Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) implementation requires advanced costly hardware, unavailable in most research environments, making protocol testing and performance evaluation complicated. This has been a major motivation for the development of QKD simulation frameworks, to allow researchers to obtain insight before proceeding into practical implementations. Several simulators have been introduced over the recent years. However, only four are publicly available, only one of which models equipment imperfections. Currently, no open‐source simulator includes all following capabilities: channel attenuation modelling, equipment imperfections and effects on key rates, estimation of elapsed time during classical and quantum‐ channel processes, use of truly random binary sequences for qubits and measurement bases, shared ‐bit fraction customization. In this paper, we present NuQKD, an open‐ source modular, intuitive simulator, featuring all the above capabilities. NuQKD establishes communication between two computer terminals, accepts custom user inputs (iterations, raw key size, attacker interception rate etc.) and evaluates the sifted key, Quantum Bit Error Rate (QBER), elapsed communication time, and more. NuQKD capabilities include optical fiber and free ‐space simulation, modeling of equipment/channel imperfections, bitstrings from True Random Number Generators, decoy‐state protocol support, and automated evaluation of performance metrics. We expect NuQKD to enable convenient and accurate representation of actual experimental conditions.

Integrated silicon photonics chip fabricated by CMOS compatible technology for low-bit-error-rate quantum key distribution

Quantum communication has extremely high security and is a development direction of future communication networks. In this paper, an on-chip path, off-chip polarization encoded quantum key distribution (QKD) chip is designed and fabricated using advanced silicon photonics fabrication technology. Using a special two-dimensional grating, we can convert light of different path states into corresponding polarization states and propagate in fiber. The performance of the basic optics, waveguides, gratings, and Mach–Zehnder interferometers on the chip is characterized. In the demonstrated QKD experiment, the quantum bit error rate is as low as 1.08%. It provides an important device for the future development of advanced integrated quantum information.

Quantum Complementarity Approach to Device-Independent Security.

Complementarity is an essential feature of quantum mechanics. The preparation of an eigenstate of one observable implies complete randomness in its complementary observable. In quantum cryptography, complementarity allows us to formulate security analyses in terms of phase-error correction. However, the concept becomes much subtler in the device-independent regime that offers security without device characterization. Security proofs of device-independent quantum cryptography tasks are often complex and quite different from those of their more standard device-dependent cousins. The existing proofs pose huge challenges to experiments, among which large data-size requirement is a crux. Here, we show the complementarity security origin of the device-independent tasks. By linking complementarity with quantum nonlocality, we recast the device-independent scheme into a quantum error correction protocol. Going beyond the identical-and-independent-distribution case, we consider the most general attack. We generalize the sample entropy in classical Shannon theory for the finite-size analysis. Our method exhibits good finite-size performance and brings the device-independent scheme to a more practical regime. Applying it to the data in a recent ion-trap-based device-independent quantum key distribution experiment, one could reduce the requirement on data size to less than a third. Furthermore, the operational meaning of complementarity naturally extends device-independent scenarios to advantage key distillation, easing experiments by tolerating higher loss and lower transmittance.

Time-bin phase-encoding quantum key distribution using Sagnac-based optics and compatible electronics.

In this work, we present a new time-bin phase-encoding quantum key distribution (QKD), where the transmitter utilizes an inherently stable Sagnac-type interferometer, and has comparable electrical requirements to existing polarization or phase encoding schemes. This approach does not require intensity calibration and is insensitive to environmental disturbances, making it both flexible and high-performing. We conducted experiments with a compact QKD system to demonstrate the stability and secure key rate performance of the presented scheme. The results show a typical secure key rate of 6.2 kbps@20 dB and 0.4 kbps@30 dB with channel loss emulated by variable optical attenuators. A continuous test of 120-km fiber spool shows a stable quantum bit error rate of the time-bin basis within 0.4%∼0.6% over a consecutive 9-day period without any adjustment. This intrinsically stable and compatible scheme of time-bin phase encoding is extensively applicable in various QKD experiments, including BB84 and measurement-device-independent QKD.

Distribution of genuine high-dimensional entanglement over 10.2 km of noisy metropolitan atmosphere

In a recent quantum key distribution experiment, high-dimensional protocols were used to show an improved noise resistance over a 10.2 km free-space channel. One of the unresolved questions in this context is whether the communicating parties actually shared genuine high-dimensional entanglement. In this letter we introduce an improved discretisation and entanglement certification scheme for high-dimensional time-bin setups and apply it to the data obtained during the experiment. Our analysis answers the aforementioned question affirmatively and thus the experiment constitutes the first transmission of genuine high-dimensional entanglement in a single degree of freedom over a long-range free-space channel.

Simulating quantum key distribution in fiber-based quantum networks

Quantum networks exploit the unique properties of quantum mechanics to enable communication and networking tasks unavailable to existing distributed classical systems. Recently, the research community has focused considerable effort on the simulation of large-scale quantum networks with the ultimate goal of understanding their general properties, developing technical standards, and estimating their expected performance. However, comparatively little effort has been spent considering how quantum networks may impact tactical scenarios of military relevance where both quantum and classical resources may be severely constrained. Here, we develop a custom framework, called QuanTACT, for quantum network simulation explicitly designed for future integration into existing tactical simulation tools. In particular, our framework extends the existing quantum networking tool, SQUANCH, to include channel models required to simulate deployed fiber environments. Furthermore, we implement the additional subroutines needed to simulate entanglement-based quantum key distribution (QKD) and use published results from various field-deployed QKD experiments to benchmark the performance of our framework.

Atomically-thin single-photon sources for quantum communication

To date, quantum communication widely relies on attenuated lasers for secret key generation. In future quantum networks, fundamental limitations resulting from their probabilistic photon distribution must be overcome by using deterministic quantum light sources. Confined excitons in monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) constitute an emerging type of emitter for quantum light generation. These atomically thin solid-state sources show appealing prospects for large-scale and low-cost device integration, meeting the demands of quantum information technologies. Here, we pioneer the practical suitability of TMDC devices in quantum communication. We employ a WSe2 monolayer single-photon source to emulate the BB84 protocol in a quantum key distribution (QKD) setup and achieve click rates of up to 66.95 kHz and antibunching values down to 0.034—a performance competitive with QKD experiments using semiconductor quantum dots or color centers in diamond. Our work opens the route towards wider applications of quantum information technologies using TMDC single-photon sources.

Free-running long-distance reference-frame-independent quantum key distribution

AbstractRapidly and randomly drifted reference frames will shorten the transmission distance and decrease the secure key rate of realistic quantum key distribution (QKD) systems. In this article, we present a free-running reference-frame-independent (RFI) QKD scheme, where measurement events are classified into multiple slices with similar estimated classification parameter. We perform the free-running RFI QKD experiment with a fiber link of 100 km and reference frame misalignment more than 29 periods in 50.7 h. A key rate as high as 742.98 bps is achieved at the total loss of 31.5 dB benefiting from both the new protocol design and the 80 MHz repetition rate system in use. Our system runs 50.7 h freely without any reference frame alignment. In the experiment, the misalignment variation rate tolerance of the experiment is 0.262 rad/s, and could be optimized to 1.309 rad/s. Therefore, our free-running RFI scheme can be efficiently adapted into the satellite-to-ground and drone-based mobile communication scenarios.

Experimental study of secure quantum key distribution with source and detection imperfections

The quantum key distribution (QKD), guaranteed by the principle of quantum physics, is a promising solution for future secure information and communication technology. However, device imperfections compromise the security of real-life QKD systems, restricting the wide deployment of QKD. This study reports a decoy-state BB84 QKD experiment that considers both source and detection imperfections. In particular, we achieved a rigorous finite-key security bound over fiber links of up to 75 km by applying a systematic performance analysis. Furthermore, our study considers more device imperfections than most previous experiments, and the proposed theory can be extended to other discrete-variable QKD systems. These features constitute a crucial step toward securing QKD with imperfect practical devices.

Experimental quantum key distribution certified by Bell's theorem.

Cryptographic key exchange protocols traditionally rely on computational conjectures such as the hardness of prime factorization1 to provide security against eavesdropping attacks. Remarkably, quantum key distribution protocols such as the Bennett-Brassard scheme2 provide information-theoretic security against such attacks, a much stronger form of security unreachable by classical means. However, quantum protocols realized so far are subject to a new class of attacks exploiting a mismatch between the quantum states or measurements implemented and their theoretical modelling, as demonstrated in numerous experiments3-6. Here we present the experimental realization of a complete quantum key distribution protocol immune to these vulnerabilities, following Ekert's pioneering proposal7 to use entanglement to bound an adversary's information from Bell's theorem8. By combining theoretical developments with an improved optical fibre link generating entanglement between two trapped-ion qubits, we obtain 95,628 key bits with device-independent security9-12 from 1.5 million Bell pairs created during eight hours of run time. We take steps to ensure that information on the measurement results is inaccessible to an eavesdropper. These measurements are performed without space-like separation. Our result shows that provably secure cryptography under general assumptions is possible with real-world devices, and paves the way for further quantum information applications based on the device-independence principle.

Experimental Quantum Key Distribution with Integrated Silicon Photonics and Electronics

In the burgeoning field of quantum secure communication, the ``chipization'' and integration of quantum key distribution (QKD) systems is a prime topic. Here the authors demonstrate a prototype of an integrated optoelectronic QKD transmitter: a photonics chip that integrates the essential encoding components for the decoy-state BB84 protocol, plus electronics chips that integrate the dedicated driving circuits. Experiments at a repetition rate of 312.5 MHz verify the system's performance. This work takes a key step toward system-in-package QKD applications.

Quantum Key Distribution Over a Channel with Scattering

Scattering of light by cloud, haze, and fog decreases the transmission efficiency of communication channels in quantum key distribution (QKD), reduces the system's practical security, and thus constrains the deployment of free-space QKD. Here, we employ wave-front shaping technology to compensate distorted optical signals in high-loss scattering quantum channels and fulfill a polarization-encoded BB84 QKD experiment. With this quantum-channel compensation technology, we achieve a typical enhancement of about 250 in transmission efficiency and build a secure communication link even considering finite key length effect, while the link is impossible to share secure keys before optimization. The method applied in the QKD system shows the potential to expand the application range of QKD systems from lossless channels to highly scattered ones and therefore enhances the deployment ability of a global quantum communication network.

A quantum key distribution testbed using a plug&play telecom-wavelength single-photon source

Deterministic solid state quantum light sources are considered key building blocks for future communication networks. While several proof-of-principle experiments of quantum communication using such sources have been realized, most of them required large setups—often involving liquid helium infrastructure or bulky closed-cycle cryotechnology. In this work, we report on the first quantum key distribution (QKD) testbed using a compact benchtop quantum dot single-photon source operating at telecom wavelengths. The plug&play device emits single-photon pulses at O-band wavelengths (1321 nm) and is based on a directly fiber-pigtailed deterministically fabricated quantum dot device integrated into a compact Stirling cryocooler. The Stirling is housed in a 19 in. rack module including all accessories required for stand-alone operation. Implemented in a simple QKD testbed emulating the BB84 protocol with polarization coding, we achieve an multiphoton suppression of g(2)(0)=0.10±0.01 and a raw key rate of up to (4.72 ± 0.13) kHz using an external pump laser. In this setting, we further evaluate the performance of our source in terms of the quantum bit error ratios, secure key rates, and tolerable losses expected in full implementations of QKD while accounting for finite key size effects. Furthermore, we investigate the optimal settings for a two-dimensional temporal acceptance window applied on the receiver side, resulting in predicted tolerable losses up to 23.19 dB. Not least, we compare our results with previous proof-of-concept QKD experiments using quantum dot single-photon sources. Our study represents an important step forward in the development of fiber-based quantum-secured communication networks exploiting sub-Poissonian quantum light sources.

Experimental secure quantum key distribution in the presence of polarization-dependent loss

Quantum key distribution (QKD) is theoretically secure using the principle of quantum mechanics; therefore, QKD is a promising solution for the future of secure communication. Although several experimental demonstrations of QKD have been reported, they have not considered the polarization-dependent loss in state preparation in the key-rate estimation. In this study, we experimentally characterized polarization-dependent loss in realistic state-preparation devices and verified that a considerable polarization-dependent loss exists in fiber- and silicon-based polarization modulators. Hence, the security of such QKD systems is compromised because of the secure key rate overestimation. Furthermore, we report a decoy-state BB84 QKD experiment considering polarization-dependent loss. Finally, we achieved rigorous finite-key security bound over up to 75 km fiber links by applying a recently proposed security proof. This study considers more realistic source flaws than most previous experiments; thus, it is crucial toward a secure QKD with imperfect practical devices.

Security bounds for decoy-state quantum key distribution with arbitrary photon-number statistics

The decoy-state method is a standard enhancement to quantum key distribution (QKD) protocols that has enabled countless QKD experiments with inexpensive light sources. However, new technological advancements might require further theoretical study of this technique. In particular, the decoy-state method is typically described under the assumption of a Poisson statistical distribution for the number of photons in each QKD pulse. This is a practical choice, because prepare-and-measure QKD is often implemented with attenuated lasers, which produce exactly this distribution. However, sources that do not meet this assumption are not guaranteed to be compatible with decoy states. In this work, we provide security bounds for decoy-state QKD using a source with an arbitrary photon emission statistic. We consider both the asymptotic limit of infinite key and the finite-size scenario, and evaluate two common decoy-state schemes: the vacuum+weak and one-decoy protocols. We numerically evaluate the performance of the bounds, comparing three realistic statistical distributions (Poisson, thermal, binomial), showing that they are all viable options for QKD.

Finite-key analysis of loss-tolerant quantum key distribution based on random sampling theory

The core of security proofs of quantum key distribution (QKD) is the estimation of a parameter that determines the amount of privacy amplification that the users need to apply in order to distill a secret key. To estimate this parameter using the observed data, one needs to apply concentration inequalities, such as random sampling theory or Azuma's inequality. The latter can be straightforwardly employed in a wider class of QKD protocols, including those that do not rely on mutually unbiased encoding bases, such as the loss-tolerant (LT) protocol. However, when applied to real-life finite-length QKD experiments, Azuma's inequality typically results in substantially lower secret-key rates. Here, we propose an alternative security analysis of the LT protocol against general attacks, for both its prepare-and-measure and measure-device-independent versions, that is based on random sampling theory. Consequently, our security proof provides considerably higher secret-key rates than the previous finite-key analysis based on Azuma's inequality. This work opens up the possibility of using random sampling theory to provide alternative security proofs for other QKD protocols.

Optimization of ATP System Based on Quantum Secure Communication and Its Tracking Control Strategy

In quantum key distribution experiments, ground motion is usually used to simulate satellite-based motion. The posture fluctuation of the platform affects the normal operation of the acquisition, tracking, and pointing (abbreviated as ATP) system seriously. To achieve the verification of the ground motion platform, the ATP parameters of the ground simulation motion system cannot be designed only according to the satellite-based ATP parameters. To solve this problem, a set of initial pointing system and inertial stabilization system is added to the simulation ATP system. This provides a technical solution for the ground simulation ATP system similar to the satellite-based motion platform. In the meanwhile, a tracking control strategy based on the identification method is proposed by establishing identification symbols. Compared with traditional proportion, integral, and differential (abbreviated as PID) control, this method overcomes the shortcoming of tentative modification of the control parameters and improves the stability and adaptability of the tracking control process. Tracking accuracy of ±0.1° is achieved under heavy-load conditions. This guarantees the success of the quantum key distribution (QKD) verification test of the ground motion platform.
