The Socio-Economic Characteristics and Challenges of Homeless Youths in Maiduguri and Lagos: A Comparative Study

Homelessness is a pervasive and multifaceted global issue affecting societies across various economic landscapes. This study provides a critical and extensive examination of youth homelessness in Maiduguri and Lagos, Nigeria. By analysing socio-economic characteristics, pathways into homelessness, living conditions, health challenges and experiences of social discrimination, the study underscores the importance of tailored interventions considering regional variations and the diverse needs of homeless youth populations. The findings highlight both commonalities and disparities, reflecting the complex interplay of socio-economic factors and regional dynamics, and provide valuable insights for developing effective policies and interventions.

A city of two tales: Educational gradients of discrimination experiences among internal migrants in Beijing, China

AbstractDrawing on 127 qualitative in‐depth interviews in Beijing, China in 2015, we examine the similarities and differences in discrimination experiences among internal migrants across educational backgrounds. While institutional discrimination remains a significant barrier for both university‐educated and lower‐educated migrants, findings reveal a salient educational differential in the experiences of social discrimination. The reduction in social discrimination enjoyed by university‐educated migrants arises from a shared class identity between them and the locals due to similar cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Moreover, results show a divide among migrants across education and socioeconomic status. In an attempt to distance themselves from their fellows of lower socioeconomic status, university‐educated migrants and migrants of higher socioeconomic status turn towards in‐group discrimination, based on perceived differentials in skills and entitlements to Beijing's resources. This study highlights the importance of unpacking the nuanced patterns and pathways across educational and socioeconomic heterogeneities in examining migrants' discrimination experiences.

Afghan immigrants in the world city of Yazd (Iran): Strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities

The present study aimed to identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of Afghan immigrants for the Iranian community in general and Yazd province in particular. To this end, the methods of qualitative sociological research and SWOT analysis were used, and the research data was collected through in-depth interviews with 21 informants. Working as a substitute for Iranian labor in less popular jobs, functioning as cultural ambassadors of Iran, and integration with the host society were detected to comprise the opportunities of Afghan immigrants. Hardworking spirit of immigrants and increased competition between the local labor force and the Afghan labor force were recognized as the strengths of Afghan immigrants. Weaknesses were found to be inadequate supervision of Afghan migrants, the experience of social discrimination, legal loopholes regarding the organization of Afghan migrants, and lack of a proper job placement system. Finally, threats were found to be the settlement of immigrants in the historical part of Yazd province, the high number of children of Afghans, and the increased possibility of committing crimes.

Experience of Social Discrimination in Leisure Activities of Persons with Mental Disabilities Compared with Persons with Physical Disabilities

Purpose: To compare experiences of social discrimination in leisure activities between persons with mental disabilities and those with physical disabilities.Methods: This study analyzed data of the National Survey of People with Disabilities in 2020. Data from 311 persons with mental disabilities and 2,488 persons with physical disabilities were subjected to frequency analysis, <i>x</i><sup>2</sup> test, and hierarchical logistic regression.Results: In model 1, the experience of social discrimination in leisure activities was higher for persons with mental disabilities than for persons with physical disabilities (OR: 1.46, 95% CI: 1.14~1.88). In model 2, the experience of social discrimination in leisure activities was higher for persons with mental disabilities than for persons with physical disabilities (OR: 1.31, 95% CI: 1.00~1.72). In model 3 and model 4, there was no significant difference in the experience of social discrimination in leisure activities between the two groups (OR: 1.22, 95% CI: 0.92~1.61 in model 3; OR: 1.25, 95% CI: 0.94~1.66 in model 4).Conclusion: It was found that average monthly household income, residence area, and community medical staff's understanding of disability had more impact on the experience of social discrimination in leisure activities of persons with mental disabilities.

Combating Stigmatization and Social Discrimination Phenomena Arising from Covid-19 Pandemic Health Responses in Nigeria

Purpose: This paper attempted to x-ray the incidence of COVID-19 global pandemic and the resulting unfortunate stigmatization and social discrimination experiences which people with the pandemic are going through. The paper as a as a theoretical paper examined the effects of the instances of stigmatization arising from fear, misinformation, lack of adequate information and the corresponding social tension. Some of the discriminatory behaviours that accompany such fear, as they damage not only the socio-cultural fabric in the long-run, but also compromise present efforts to contain the disease were discussed.Methodology: The study adopted a descriptive research design.Findings: from the paper revealed that everyone is capable of helping to stop stigma related to COVID-19 through assisting oneself and others to cope with the stress associated with the pandemic in order to make the community stronger. Attempt was therefore made to highlight some strategies that could be considered and explored by different stakeholders such as the government, media, community, the individuals and research institutes towards mitigating the effects of stigmatization and social discrimination created by the global pandemic called COVID-19. It concluded that we all have a responsibility to help correct the misconceptions through policy shift and interventions that can promote less chances of stigmatization in case of any pandemic.Unique contribution to theory, policy and practice: Members of any community experiencing COVID-19 cases must be ready to maintain privacy and confidentiality of people with such cases so that they will not be unnecessarily exposed to instances of stigmatization and discrimination. Timely public health interventions capable of addressing cultural impact and the risk of stigmatization along with proper screening, treatment and follow up will reduce any anticipated spike in the spread and resultantly bring down the chances of stigmatization and discrimination. Health workers would need to be more conscious of the names of diseases and using of words and phrases such as “epidemic”, “the epicenter of the disease”. The media personnel equally need to be cautious about the images that are shared by making sure that they do not reinforce stereotypes. They must be very careful in their choices of awareness materials. Scholars would need to be encouraged to get involved in action researches that can promote the development of vaccines and drugs that can help reduce the menace of COVID-19 which is currently characterized by deaths and numerous instances of stigmatization and discrimination

Predictors of life satisfaction among multicultural African families in South Korea

The aim of this study was to predict perceived life satisfaction of multicultural African families living in South Korea in terms of their fluency in the Korean language, government support for education, and the experience of discrimination. A total of 64 family members (29 women, 45.3%) completed measures of life satisfaction, Korean language fluency, public welfare assistance, and social discrimination. A hierarchical regression analysis determined that life satisfaction was higher among those with fluency in the Korean language and low or no reliance on public welfare programs. Experience of social discrimination was unrelated to life satisfaction. Host-country language fluency and livelihood self-sustenance seem to be key resources for families with immigrant spouses.

Queer solidarities: New activisms erupting at the intersection of structural precarity and radical misrecognition

This article investigates the relationship between exposure to structural injustice, experiences of social discrimination, psychological well being, physical health, and engagement in activist solidarities for a large, racially diverse and inclusive sample of 5,860 LGBTQ/Gender Expansive youth in the United States. Through a participatory action research design and a national survey created by an intergenerational research collective, the “What’s Your Issue?” survey data are used to explore the relationships between injustice, discrimination and activism; to develop an analysis of how race and gender affect young people’s vulnerabilities to State violence (in housing, schools and by the police), and their trajectories to activism, and to amplify a range of “intimate activisms” engaged by LGBTQ/GE youth with powerful adults outside their community, and with often marginalized peers within. The essay ends with a theoretical appreciation of misrecognition as structural violence; activism as a racialized and gendered response to injustice, and an elaborated archive of “intimate activisms” engaged with dominant actors and within community, by LGBTQ/GE youth who have been exiled from home, school, state protection and/or community and embody, nevertheless, “willful subjectivities”.

Reliability and validity study of a tool to measure cancer stigma: Patient version

Objective:The aim of this methodological study is to establish the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of “A Questionnaire for Measuring Attitudes toward Cancer (Cancer Stigma) - Patient version.”Methods:The sample comprised oncology patients who had active cancer treatment. The construct validity was assessed using the confirmatory and exploratory factor analysis.Results:The mean age of the participants was 54.9±12.3 years. In the confirmatory factor analysis, fit values were determined as comparative fit index = 0.93, goodness of fit index = 0.91, normed-fit index=0.91, and root mean square error of approximation RMSEA = 0.09 (P <0.05) (Kaiser–Meyer–Olkin = 0.88, χ2 = 1084.41, Df = 66, and Barletta's test P <0.000). The first factor was “impossibility of recovery and experience of social discrimination” and the second factor was “stereotypes of cancer patients.” The two-factor structure accounted for 56.74% of the variance. The Cronbach's alpha value was determined as 0.88 for the two-factor scale.Conclusions:“A questionnaire for measuring attitudes toward cancer (cancer stigma) - Patient version” is a reliable and valid questionnaire to assess stigmatization of cancer in cancer patients.

The Relationships among Social Discrimination, Subjective Health, and Personal Satisfaction of Immigrants

Purpose: This study aims to examine the relationships among social discrimination, subjective health, and personal satisfaction based on the country of origin. Methods: The analysis was based on 16,958 immigrants who participated in the National Survey of Multicultural Family 2015 in Korea. This study conducted stratified cross-analysis of social discrimination for the differences in subjective health and personal satisfaction. Multivariate-adjusted odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals for the relationships among social discrimination, subjective health, and personal satisfaction were examined with multivariable logistic regression. Results: There were differences in experience of social discrim-ination, subjective health status, and personal satisfaction according to the country of origin. Groups without the experi-ence of social discrimination had better subjective health and personal satisfaction than the other groups. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that a discrimination prevention program needs to be developed based on a cultural approach.

Chi-Square Automatic Interaction Detection Modeling for Predicting Depression in Multicultural Female Students

This study developed a depression prediction model for female students from multicultural families by using a decision tree model based on Chi-squared automatic interaction detection (CHAID) algorithm. Subjects of the study were 9,024 female students between 12 and 15 years old among the children of surveyed marriage immigrants. Outcome variables were classified as presence of depression. Explanatory variables included sex, residing area, experience of career counseling, experience of social discrimination, experience of Korean language education, experience of using a multicultural family support center, Korean reading, Korean speaking, Korean writing, Korean listening, Korean society adjustment education experience, needs of Korean society adjustment education, needs of Korean language education, and rejoined entry. In the CHAID algorithm analysis, female students from multicultural families who experienced social discrimination within the past one year and had ordinary Korean speaking skill posed the highest risk of depression. It is necessary to pay social level interests to the mental health of adolescents from multicultural families for achieving successful social integration based on the results of this study.

Living with constant leaking of urine and odour: thematic analysis of socio-cultural experiences of women affected by obstetric fistula in rural Tanzania.

BackgroundObstetric fistula is a worldwide problem that affects women and girls mostly in Sub Saharan Africa. It is a devastating medical condition consisting of an abnormal opening between the vagina and the bladder or rectum, resulting from unrelieved obstructed labour. Obstetric fistula has devastating social, economic and psychological effect on the health and wellbeing of the women living with it. This study aimed at exploring social-cultural experiences of women living with obstetric fistula in rural Tanzania.MethodsWomen living with obstetric fistula were identified from the fistula ward at CCBRT hospital. Sixteen individual semi structured interviews and two (2) focus group discussions were conducted among consenting women. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and transcripts analysed independently by two researchers using a thematic analysis approach. Themes related to the experiences of living with obstetric fistula were identified.ResultsFour themes illustrating the socio-cultural experiences of women living with obstetric fistula emerged from the analysis of women experiences of living with incontinence and odour. These were keeping clean and neat, earning an income, maintaining marriage, and keeping association. Women experiences of living with fistula were largely influenced by perceptions of people around them basing on their cultural understanding of a woman.ConclusionLiving with fistula reveals women’s day-to-day experiences of social discrimination and loss of control due to incontinence and odour. They cannot work and contribute to the family income, cannot satisfy their husband’s sexual needs and or bear children, and cannot interact with members of the community in social activities. Women experience of living with fistula was influenced by perceptions of people around them. In the eyes of these people, women who leak urine were of less value since they were not capable of carrying out ascribed social roles.

Factors Influencing Married Immigrant Women's Perceived Health Status: The National Survey of Multicultural Families 2012.

The purpose of this study was to investigate factors that influence married female immigrants' perceived health status. This study was a retrospective review of dataset from the 2012 National Multicultural Family Survey in Korea. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests, an analysis of variance (ANOVA), Pearson correlation analysis, and multiple regression with the data of 3,014 married female immigrants. Multiple regression analysis showed that demographic factors (age, education level, nationality, period of residency in Korea, and residential area), socio-economical factors (monthly family income, employment, support from the government for basic living, and Medicaid), social support factors (marital conflict, satisfaction with family relationships, some one to talk about self or family matters, meeting with homeland friend, and participation in community meeting), and immigration factors (life satisfaction, experience of social discrimination, and difficulties with living and using medical care) were associated with perceived health status. It is important to pay closer attention to immigrant women who have low economic status, less social support, experience difficulties with living in Korea and using medical care. An effective support system for this population should be developed in order to help them successfully transition.

Sexual orientation- and race-based discrimination and sexual HIV risk behavior among urban MSM.

Understanding what social factors are associated with risk of HIV acquisition and transmission among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (MSM) is a critical public health goal. Experiencing discrimination may increase risk of HIV infection among MSM. This analysis assessed relations between experiences of sexual orientation- and race-based discrimination and sexual HIV risk behavior among MSM in New York City. 1,369 MSM completed a self-administered computerized assessment of past 3-month sexual behavior, experience of social discrimination and other covariates. Regression models assessed relations between recent experience of discrimination and sexual HIV risk behavior. Mean age was 32years; 32% were white; 32% Latino/Hispanic; 25% African American/Black. Of MSM who self-reported HIV-positive or unknown status (377), 7% (N=27) reported having unprotected insertive anal intercourse with an HIV-negative or unknown status partner ("HIV transmission risk"). Of MSM who self-reported HIV-negativestatus (992), 11% (110) reported unprotected receptive anal intercourse with an HIV-positive or unknown status partner ("HIV acquisition risk"). HIV acquisition risk was positively associated with sexual orientation-based discrimination in home or social neighborhoods, but not race-based discrimination. We observed that sexual orientation-based discrimination was associated with sexual HIV risk behavior among urban-dwelling MSM. Addressing environmental sources of this form of discrimination, as well as the psychological distress that may result, should be prioritized in HIV prevention efforts.

Association between cancer stigma and depression among cancer survivors: a nationwide survey in Korea

Cancer patients are more likely to experience depression than the general population. This study aims to evaluate the possible association between cancer stigma and depression among cancer patients. As a part of the Korean government's program to develop comprehensive supportive care, we conducted a nationwide survey in 2010 at the National Cancer Center and in nine regional cancer centers across Korea. Cancer stigma was assessed by using a set of 12 questions grouped in three domains-impossibility of recovery, stereotypes of cancer patients, and experience of social discrimination. Depression was measured by using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. A total of 466 cancer patients were included in the study. Over 30% of the cancer survivors had negative attitudes toward cancer and held stereotypical views of themselves: about 10% of the participants experienced social discrimination due to cancer, and 24.5% reported clinically significant depressive symptoms. Patients who had or experienced cancer stigma were 2.5 times more likely to have depression than patients with positive attitudes. Regardless of highly developed medical science and increased survivorship, cancer survivors had cancer stigmas, and it was significantly associated with depression. Our findings emphasize the need for medical societies and health professionals to pay more attention to cancer stigma that patients are likely to experience during treatment.

Experience of social discrimination correlates with neurometabolism: a pilot study in heroin addicts

Experimental social neuroscience has shown that being socially excluded is processed in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). We hypothesize that a chronic form of social exclusion resembling one aspect of social stigmatization is associated with altered neural plasticity reflected by neurometabolic alterations in the ACC. To test this hypothesis, a highly stigmatized patient group of heroin addicts (N = 15) during opiate maintenance therapy rated a questionnaire about being stigmatized, and neurometabolic markers in the ACC were determined using (1)H MR spectroscopy. We found a negative correlation between discrimination experience and N-acetylaspartate (NAA), indicating attenuated neuron functioning in the anterior cingulate cortex in those patients reporting high discrimination experience. Furthermore, perceived stigmatization showed an association with anxiety that was mediated by NAA. Although the correlative analysis cannot give evidence for a causal relationship, the relation of NAA in the ACC and discrimination experience indicates a malfunction of the neural system involved in cognitive control over emotionally relevant social stimuli in discrimination reporting heroin addicts. Further research is needed to elucidate factors associated with chronic stigmatization.

Strategies for Managing Racism and Homophobia among U.S. Ethnic and Racial Minority Men Who Have Sex with Men

Despite widespread recognition that experiences of social discrimination can lead to poor physical and mental health outcomes for members of minority groups, little is known about how U.S. ethnic minority men who have sex with men (MSM) manage their experiences of racism and homophobia. We conducted six focus group discussions (n = 50) and 35 in-depth interviews with African American, Latino, and Asian and Pacific Islander MSM (aged 18 or older) recruited in Los Angeles. This process revealed five strategies that MSM of color employed in order to mitigate the impact of racism and homophobia. To minimize opportunities for stigmatization, men used (a) concealment of homosexuality and (b) disassociation from social settings associated with stigmatization. To minimize the impact of experienced stigma, men (c) dismissed the stigmatization and (d) drew strength and comfort from external sources. Men also actively countered stigmatization by (e) direct confrontation. More research is needed to understand the efficacy of these coping strategies in mitigating negative health consequences of stigmatization and discrimination.

‘Pain on Top of Pain, Hurtness on Top of Hurtness’: Social Discrimination, Psychological Well-Being, and Sexual Risk Among Women Living With HIV/AIDS

ABSTRACT This qualitative study explored how a subsample (n = 26) of participants in Protect and Respect (N = 184), a safer-sex intervention for women living with HIV/AIDS (WLH/A), discussed their experiences of social discrimination and the impact of discrimination on their lives, psychological well-being, and risk behaviors during group intervention sessions. The majority of participants was Black (83%), earned less than $10,000 per year (80%), and acquired HIV through heterosexual sex (58%). Analyses demonstrated that social discrimination manifested in the women's lives as poverty, HIV/AIDS-related stigma, and gender inequality. These experiences caused intense psychological distress and limited WLH/A's ability to implement the safer-sex skills that they learned during the intervention. We discuss the applied and theoretical implications of our findings, advocating for HIV and sexual risk-reduction interventions that are based on an ecological framework that addresses holistically the individual, relational, and sociostructural factors that affect women's sexual risk behaviors.

Experiences of Social Discrimination Among Men Who Have Sex with Men in Shanghai, China

In China, men who have sex with men (MSM) are at increasingly high risk for HIV. However, prevention efforts targeting this population may be hindered because of the stigma associated with homosexuality in traditional Chinese culture. We conducted qualitative interviews with 30 MSM in Shanghai to better understand the types and sources of stigma and discrimination and how MSM respond to them. The stigma associated with homosexuality can be traced back to four culturally based factors: social status and relationships, the value of family, perceptions of immorality and abnormality, and gender stereotypes of masculinity. In particular, the centrality of the family and the importance of maintaining key relationships caused stress and anxiety, contributing to more frequent encounters with felt stigma. In response, MSM often evaded the scrutiny of family members through various tactics, even prompting some to leave their rural homes. Implications of these findings on HIV/AIDS prevention are discussed.
