The HOP Protocol: Reliable Latency-Bounded End-to-End Multipath Communication

Next-generation wireless networks are expected to enable new applications with strict latency constraints. However, existing transport layer protocols are unable to meet the stringent Quality of Service (QoS) requirements on throughput and maximum latency: excessive queuing due to capacity-oriented congestion control inflates end-to-end latency well beyond interactivity deadlines. In this work, we propose a novel framework that evolves best-effort communications into reliability- and latency-aware communications for QoS-sensitive applications. The new protocol, named High-reliability latency-bounded Overlay Protocol (HOP), provides a novel combination of packet-level Forward Error Correction (FEC) and multipath scheduling to compensate for capacity drops and meet pre-defined QoS requirements. More specifically, the sender splits the data and the associated redundancy between the paths by using a stochastic forecast of their future capacity and decides the amount of redundancy necessary to meet the application’s requirements without clogging the connections. We compare HOP’s performance with state-of-the-art multipath protocols in ns-3 simulations using both synthetic and live network traces, and confirm that our scheme can reliably deliver high-throughput data, reducing the number of late blocks by 2 to 5 times with respect to optimized Multipath TCP (MPTCP).

A Survey on Reliable and Congestion Control Transport Protocols of WSN

Transport layer protocols of Wireless sensor networks, plays an important role in the achievement of high performance and the long life time of the network. This layer is specifically needed when a system is organized to access other networks. Two functions provided by this layer are; reliability and the congestion control. Many numbers of protocols are designed to achieve these two functions. This paper gives you a review of reliable transport layer protocols and congestion control transport layer protocols. First, it gives an introduction to the wireless sensor networks. Second, gives an idea about the various services provided by transport layer and the disadvantages of using traditional TCP (Transport control protocol) and UDP (User datagram protocol) of transport layer. Accelerating peer-to-peer networks for video streaming using multipoint-to-point communication

Existing transport layer protocols such as TCP and UDP are designed specifically for point-to-point communication. The increased popularity of peer-to-peer networking has brought changes in the Internet that provided users with potentially multiple replicated sources for content retrieval. However, applications that leverage such parallelism have thus far been limited to non-real-time file downloads. In this article we consider the problem of multipoint-to-point video streaming over peer-to-peer networks. We present a transport layer protocol called R/sup 2/CP that effectively enables real-time multipoint-to-point video streaming. R/sup 2/CP is a receiver-driven multistate transport protocol. It requires no coordination between multiple sources, accommodates flexible application layer reliability semantics, uses TCP-friendly congestion control, and delivers to the video stream the aggregate of the bandwidths available on the individual paths. Simulation results show great performance benefits using R/sup 2/CP in peer-to-peer networks.

ATL: An Adaptive Transport Layer Suite for Next-Generation Wireless Internet

The next-generation wireless Internet (NGWI) is expected to provide a wide range of services including high-speed data and real-time multimedia to mobile users. To realize this expectation, a diverse set of challenges need to be addressed, which are posed by heterogeneous wireless networking environments within NGWI and the according application requirements. Furthermore, the architectural heterogeneities must be captured dynamically, while mobile users may roam during their connection duration. Current existing transport layer protocols have been developed for a specific network paradigm in mind, e.g., for wireless local area networks (WLANs), micro/macro wireless systems, or for satellite systems. Using these existing different transport layer protocols for NGWI to support global roaming of mobile users is not a practical solution due to processing and memory constraints of wireless terminals. Thus, there is a need for a unified adaptive transport layer protocol suite which can address the architectural heterogeneities for roaming mobile users and achieve the best performance for NGWI. In this paper, a unified adaptive transport layer (ATL) suite is introduced for NGWI which incorporates a new adaptive transport protocol (TCP-ATL) for reliable data transport and a new adaptive rate control protocol (RCP-ATL) for multimedia delivery in the NGWI. According to the requested service type, i.e., reliable data or multimedia, ATL selects the appropriate protocol. Both TCP-ATL and RCP-ATL, deploy a new adaptive congestion control method that dynamically adjusts the protocol configurations according to the current wireless network paradigms depending where the mobile user currently resides. Hence, the unified adaptive ATL protocol suite achieves high-throughput performance in all of underlying heterogeneous wireless architectures, i.e., WLANs, micro, macro, or satellite environments. Moreover, the developed adaptive congestion control explicitly takes fairness into consideration. Performance evaluation via simulation experiments reveals that the ATL protocol suite addresses the challenges posed by the NGWI and significantly improves the performance for reliable data and multimedia transport in NGWI.
