Boosts for walking: how humorous messages increase brisk walking among cognitively fatigued individuals

BackgroundA well-studied internal barrier to regular physical activity, and more specifically brisk walking, is cognitive fatigue. However, thus far little research examined how cognitively fatigued individuals can be motivated to exercise, more specifically to engage in brisk walking. This study investigates whether humorous intervention messages might be an effective strategy to motivate cognitively fatigued individuals to brisk walk, and through which underlying processes.MethodsAn online experiment was performed in which variation in cognitive fatigue was induced through mental arithmetic questions. Afterwards, participants (n = 250) recruited through Prolific, randomly received either humorous or non-humorous intervention messages related to brisk walking. Potential mediators of the relations between physical activity, humour and cognitive fatigue were measured, were self-efficacy, self-control, and motivation.ResultsFirst, regression analyses confirmed that cognitive fatigue negatively influences brisk walking intentions and that the perceived humour of the intervention messages moderated this relationship. Second, results showed that self-control and self-efficacy are mediators explaining the relationship between cognitive fatigue and brisk walking intentions. Lastly, this study found that perceived humour of the intervention messages moderated the relationship between cognitive fatigue and self-control, indicating that perceptions of self-control were positively changed after receiving messages that were perceived as humorous compared to messages that were not perceived as humorous, subsequently increasing brisk walking intentions.ConclusionsThis study is the first to unravel the underlying relationship between humorous intervention messages and brisk walking intentions through positive changes in perceptions of self-control within a cognitively fatigued sample. Results of this study suggest that existing smartphone applications monitoring and promoting brisk walking should integrate tailored message strategies within their cues to brisk walk by implementing humour as a strategy to motivate users when they are cognitively fatigued.

Monitoring Worker Exposure to COVID-19 and Other Occupational Risks Using BLE Beacons

The COVID-19 pandemic has become a public health priority during 2020. Social safety distance is one of the most effective strategies to stop the spreading of the virus, as it reduces the dose of infectious particles that a person can receive. Real-time location systems (RTLS) based on ultrawideband (UWB), radio frequency identification (RFID), Global Position System (GPS), or Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) can help keep workers safe at the workplace. The aim of the current paper is to develop a dosimeter proposal to monitor and control the distance and exposure time between workers based on BLE beacon technology considering viral load. Our proposal is based on a set of BLE beacons and safety distance estimation by filtering RSSI measurements with a Gaussian extended Kalman filter. According to the estimated proximity values and the exposure time, a finite state machine will alarm when the worker receives the maximum dose defined by health authorities. The proposed system can be applied to prevent any risk that can be eliminated or reduced controlling distances and/or exposition time of the worker to the occupational risk. The proposal is robust, is inexpensive, and respects the privacy of workers, and its accuracy is higher than that of existing smartphone applications. In future pandemic situations, the system can be easily updated to the safety distance and viral particle dose related with the new risk agent. The system can protect from additional risk incorporating beacons on the extra risk identified such as thermal, noise, or radiation.

Evaluating the Expediency of Smartphone Applications for Indian Farmers and Other Stakeholders

Smartphone application usage has increased exponentially over the past decade. The potentiality of smartphone applications as a tool for various decision-making processes is not fully explored, especially in the field of agriculture. This work systematically evaluates smartphone applications developed by research institutes and non-profit organizations and made available to Indian agriculture stakeholders, who have the world’s largest user base. The study analyzed 25 smartphone applications developed for the agriculture and allied sectors available to the Indian farming community. The usability, accessibility, frequency of updates, user ratings, and number of downloads of smartphone applications are systematically evaluated. Furthermore, this article assesses the divergence between existing smartphone applications and the needs of agricultural stakeholders. This research necessitates the importance of systematic evaluation of digital applications available to the end-users and offers guidelines to application developers, researchers, and policymakers on the potential shortcomings of prevailing smartphone applications and warrants features for future smartphone applications.

How is the Elderly’s Capability to Use Smartphones in Banda Aceh

BACKGROUND: Smartphone is one form of technology that is increasing that provides many benefits for the elderly such as the many applications adapted to improve the quality of life of the elderly; one of them is the existence of health applications. AIM: The purpose of this study was to determine how the ability to use smartphones in the elderly in Banda Aceh, which includes the ability to use the basics of the software, communication, data and file storage, internet, calendar, entertainment, privacy, and security, and software troubleshooting and management. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study used a descriptive exploratory with a cross-sectional study design. The sampling technique is non-probability sampling using the snowball sampling method with as many as 400 older people. The research data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, namely, the distribution of frequencies and percentages. RESULTS: The results of the research in the capable component contained the primary use of mobile devices (99.5%), entertainment (95.3%), and the internet (86.3%). While the part that respondent is less capable, there are privacy and security (94.5%), data and file storage (81.7%), communication (79.5%), calendar (59.7%), as well as troubleshooting and device management soft (50.5%). CONCLUSION: From the study finding, it is expected that nursing services can improve the ability of the elderly in fulfilling the IADL. One of them is utilizing existing smartphone applications and providing nursing interventions for the elderly using smartphones.

Using the Intervention Mapping and Behavioral Intervention Technology Frameworks: Development of an mHealth Intervention for Physical Activity and Sedentary Behavior Change.

Few interventions to promote physical activity (PA) adapt dynamically to changes in individuals' behavior. Interventions targeting determinants of behavior are linked with increased effectiveness and should reflect changes in behavior over time. This article describes the application of two frameworks to assist the development of an adaptive evidence-based smartphone-delivered intervention aimed at influencing PA and sedentary behaviors (SB). Intervention mapping was used to identify the determinants influencing uptake of PA and optimal behavior change techniques (BCTs). Behavioral intervention technology was used to translate and operationalize the BCTs and its modes of delivery. The intervention was based on the integrated behavior change model, focused on nine determinants, consisted of 33 BCTs, and included three main components: (1) automated capture of daily PA and SB via an existing smartphone application, (2) classification of the individual into an activity profile according to their PA and SB, and (3) behavior change content delivery in a dynamic fashion via a proof-of-concept application. This article illustrates how two complementary frameworks can be used to guide the development of a mobile health behavior change program. This approach can guide the development of future mHealth programs.

A survey on energy estimation and power modeling schemes for smartphone applications

SummaryIn the last decade, the rising trend in the popularity of smartphones motivated software developers to increase application functionality. However, increasing application functionality demands extra power budget that as a result, decreases smartphone battery lifetime. Optimizing energy critical sections of an application creates an opportunity to increase battery lifetime. Smartphone application energy estimation helps investigate energy consumption behavior of an application at diversified granularity (eg, coarse and fine granular) for optimal battery resource use. This study explores energy estimation and modeling schemes to highlight their advantages and shortcomings. It classifies existing smartphone application energy estimation and modeling schemes into 2 categories, ie, code analysis and mobile components power model–based estimation owing to their architectural designs. Moreover, it further classifies code analysis–based modeling and estimation schemes in simulation‐based and profiling‐based categories. It compares existing energy estimation and modeling schemes based on a set of parameters common in most literature to highlight the commonalities and differences among reported literature. Existing application energy estimation schemes are low‐accurate, resource expensive, or non‐scalable, as they consider marginally accurate smart battery's voltage/current sensors, low‐rate power capturing tools, and labor‐driven lab‐setting environment to propose power models for smartphone application energy estimation. Besides, the energy estimation overhead of the components power model–based estimation schemes is very high as they physically run the application on a smartphone for energy profiling. To optimize smartphone application energy estimation, we have highlighted several research issues to help researchers of this domain to understand the problem clearly.

Usability Testing of Oral Health Education Applications - Based on a Comparison of Dentify and Toothflix -

Background In recent years, health conditions have become the most commonly searched content for smartphone users. Moreover, digital health information about prevention and self-care will be in great demand in the near future. Although researchers from the domains of education, information technology, and dentistry have examined digital oral health education, their studies have lacked emphasis on user experience. In this study, we aimed to review and examine usability issues of commercially available oral health education apps. Afterward, we presented design guidelines for these applications. Methods First, we reviewed existing smartphone applications for oral health education and selected two accredited apps; Dentify and Toothflix. Second, for usability testing of these two apps, we adopted a heuristic evaluation system: creating usability checklists based on Peter Morville’s User Experience Honeycomb. Then, we conducted usability testing and performed in-depth interviews with dentists and UX design experts. Result We analyzed the results from the usability checklists using radar charts. Then, usability issues were categorized and summarized into oral health contents and four planes based on Jesse Garrett’s elements of user experience: the scope plane, the structure plane, skeleton plane, and surface plane. Conclusion In addition, we’ve suggested revisionary design guidelines in usability for these two apps; first, Dentify and Toothflix need to have a “Search” option. Second, the apps should incorporate multi-information channels, such as, text, images, videos, and audio. Third, these apps should require as little as possible cognitive burdens for users.

해외여행자를 위한 정보 관리 및 네트워크 프리 그린 네비게이션 응용 구현

ABSTRACT As the number of overseas travelers with smartphones increases, there is a growing interest in smartphone applications, which can assist traveling. Typically, travelers need applications to obtain basic information, such as weather, map, currency, etc. However, existing smartphone applications are not suitable to do so because they require network connection that is expensive and unstable in overseas. For example, one of the most frequently used smartphone map application requires a network connection, and much battery to download images. Since travelers spend most of their time outside, there is no chance to charge the battery. In this paper, we propose a study on implementation of a smartphone application for overseas travelers, called Travel Manager, which aims to reduce usages of network connection and battery. Travel Manager first checks whether smartphone is connected to the network, and then synchronizes the travel information. It also automatically calculates traveling expenses by considering currency rate. That is, the proposed smartphone application can be used regardless of the network connection and minimizes the battery usage.Keywords:Overseas Travel, Network Free, Green Navigation, Application, Android

사용자 리뷰를 이용한 모바일 어플리케이션의 관심 요소 분석

Recently, many mobile applications have been developed and published by increasing popularity of smart phone`s market. However, a lack of research work is an issue for mobile applications` favoritism to users. In this paper, we have determined the acceptance factors on the existing smart phone applications in order to fit into mobile user`s requirements. In addition, we have defined the modification of acceptance factors which are the interesting element of mobile applications, code users reviews of top 20 paid applications among android market applications, and analyse on what element can attract users` interest of mobile applications. As a result, we propose a development method of mobile applications based on the analyzed interesting elements. Our contribution is to provide useful information to mobile application companies for helping them to develop and publish successful mobile applications.

위치기반서비스 사용에 영향을 미치는 프라이버시 염려감소 선행요인, 신뢰 그리고 개인혁신성의 조절효과

With emergence of smart technologies(e.g., smartphones), Location-Based Services(LBS) are expected to provide more enhanced values utilizing consumers` personal information than other smart services. However, in contrast to existing smartphone applications, LBS could raised severe consumer`s privacy concerns because of rapidly changing information sensitive to consumers. In this context, the purpose of this study is to explore relationships among privacy concerns reduction, trust and intention to use LBS by examining the effect of precedence factors(social presence, reputation, mobile literacy, ability of information control) of privacy concern reduction. In addition, the study investigates the role of personal innovation as a moderating effect between privacy concern reduction and intention to use LBS. The results showed that the proposed precedence factors of privacy concerns with a exception of Mobile Literacy had a positive impact on privacy concerns reduction that then positively affected trust and intention to use LBS. In addition, the relationship between trust and intention to use LBS was significantly supported. Finally, personal innovation as a moderating effect significantly influenced the relationship between privacy concern reduction and intention to use LBS. This study is expected to be a reference for a subsequent study about the spread of LBS application of smartphone. Also, the finding of this study is meaningful for helping service direction to firms providing LBS.
